The chirping of birds and nature's music was accompanied by the sounds of the explosions as the Jack's blimp was destroyed in the clear, broad daylight.

Chishiya looked up at the sky, the firey sparks falling down from the sky while pieces of some type of burnt cloth flew in the sky - a memento for the Jack that used to rule his game before his downfall by four 'measly' players.

"Y/N." Chishiya called softly, "It's best we split our paths next game. We wouldn't want to keep a streak of playing together - we were lucky this game.

A hum left your throat. You understood that he was talking about the fact that this wasn't a single-player win like many heart games.

And yet as he walked off and away to be on his own again, you appeared to have followed his direction. He seemed to notice this, but said no words. If you wanted to talk, then surely you would say the first word.

But it happened to be quiet and peaceful for the rest of the travel. None of you had said a word, but you both enjoyed each other's silent accompany in the end result.

It was like this for the next two days. You went where he walked and barely shared any words, just a few empty sentences every few hours or so.

It was almost as if the both of you had something to say to the other but just wasn't able to bring it up, struggling every time when you were in the same room with the other and yet enjoying their presence deeply that you didn't want to leave.

The stakes are raised higher than ever and yet here you were, alive and breathing.

"Why?" Was the only word he could say or even ask, genuinely curious and yet dumbfounded at your proposal.

"Because, that's what people do when they're in love care." You looked at him, through his condescending facade he built to hide his true eyes, and you smiled softly. "They wait."

and that's when he realized, you were his comfort zone.

Short Thoughts: Alice in Borderland

When I read the little Netflix blurb, I knew the setting, I knew the tropes. And now at the end, there is still so much not to like. But I soared through the first season when it came out, and I finished this one as quickly as I started it. I think Alice in Borderland made just enough meaningful emotional contact to elevate themselves from the 'death game' genre.

[Some light spoilers]

More than anything, I think this show is a rarity in the genre because of how they portrayed rejection in most of the cast, how each of them was rejected by the world, and what they could or couldn't do in response. Some characters told you right away; others painted that picture over time. Combined with the show's built-in concept of escapism, there was a lot to relate to for a lot of people.

To me, 'death game' anime shows and games lean heavily on the glorification of every kind of violence and centering of stereotypes, with the concept of "this is not how it should be" or "this is not the real world" as poor arguments in defense. This show was weak in some of these areas.

I still have to think more about how they handled interactions involving sexual assault, which came up more than a handful of times across the two seasons. And they like their anime tropes: I think Murakami Nijirō as Chishiya handles them beautifully despite being responsible for most of the scoffs, smirks, and one-liners, but there are plenty of unnecessary moments, like a villain taking time to verbally ship the main characters. By the end, Niragi was ultimately unconvincing. Then, I'm curious how Heiya was written in the original material, because her character felt really crammed despite her being centered as the show went on. I didn't understand her having feelings for Aguni (and I could always do with less high schooler and older person vibes). The last criticism off the top of my head - there was just a little too much of Arisu having to do something to save someone or bail people out - Usagi feels too dependent through the second season compared to the first. The side characters were such ballers in this show and it was so close to being balanced.

And now the compliments.

Something I know I love is an acceleration of high density action and emotion at the end of a show. Usually the ball will be dropped somewhere as the pacing speeds up, but the last two episodes of the second season were really stunning.

The fight scene in episode 7 is one of my favorite fight scenes of all time. The untalented main character was not present. It honored what the characters were good at, but as time went on, fatigue funneled all their skill and passion into trading fists, running on fumes, balancing hopeful desperation and hopelessness unbelievably well. I absolutely did not expect this level of ferocity. My heart dropped several times. And then the idea that all the games in the show are hosted in designed spaces with rules and moderation, but that the apex fight of both seasons is close-range, in an alley, people just throwing themselves at each other - it just adds to the feeling of futile glory.

I really liked the flashback to Heiya and her friends walking out of school. I think they did Heiya's bow moments well. She didn't feel ineffectual or overpowered. I liked Chishiya's flashback at the Supreme Court. And I did like the last episode, and though I don't entirely agree with the concept they chose, this quote is still something:

Arisu: “So…what is this place anyway?”

Mira: “…You’ll soon find out. Of your two choices, no matter which you choose, you’ll know the answer. You’ll know what kind of person you are. You’ll know. Life is like a game. Enjoy it more.”

It's been a ridiculous couple of months. I'm having a hard time fitting in, but the last two months have been better. I've watched a lot of stuff, but this is the first time in a while that I feel like I have enough time to let things stir in my head to write about it.

You knocked on the familiar door. You were here at least 5 times a week. The door opened and you were met with the man you had grown fond of. $17.29, but of course, you didn't even have to tell him what the cost was, as he handed you a 20 with no words. "Keep the change." You both spoke in sync.

He laughed at the lack of his originality each time you came to drop off his food. "What can I say? I'm a man of a routine." You laughed this time. It was true. Every day, for the most part, he would order the exact same thing at the exact same time and would say the exact same thing when you dropped it off. When he didn't order, you would get nervous and hope nothing bad happened.

"If you don't mind me asking, why do you order so much fast food? You know it's not good for you." You handed him the food. "If I didn't know any better, it sounds like you're trying to get rid of me." He smiled when he saw the panic on your face.

"No! I was just wondering!" You gasped out. He really found you amusing. "I don't think I've ever had a delivery person try to convince me to stop ordering food from where they work." "Well, I'm just saying, cooking is so much healthier than whatever they put in that." You pointed to the bag of food he was still holding.

"Yeah, I would, but I'm a med student. I don't have the time." He explained. That actually made a lot of sense. "Well, if you ever need someone to cook for you, free of charge, just call me." You smiled when he tilted his head in confusion. "I don't-" He began. "Napkin." You said before walking off before your boss fired you.

Still confused, he shut the door. He set the bag of food on one of the counters. He dug through it until he found a singular napkin. He laughed when he saw a number written on it with the words "call me" in black lettering. Maybe he will, I mean, he could use a good home-cooked meal.

I know him. I should. I was there when the last blimp of a face card bursted into flames and fell upon the old, overgrown city and the sparks of brilliant lights overfilled the sky - popping.

All of it was narrowed down to a minute. Could you believe it? I simply thought it was too short.
