tuesday
“Y/N got help, Calum, with the dishes.” Your mom nods toward the kitchen as she cleans off the dining table. You hum a response, grabbing your plate before you make your way into the kitchen.
“I’ve come to the rescue.” Calum chuckles at your words, glancing in your direction with a smile. “My savior”
You smile, setting your dishes in the sink. “You can go ahead and start drying them, love.” you nod, taking a dish cloth and drying the clean culturally, the metal cool in your hands.
You stand in silence for a moment. It’s not uncomfortable, but something indescribable builds in the air between you two. He can sense that you’re thinking about something. His hip nudges yours as his hands scrub pasta sauce off of a plate, his arms flexing as the veins in his hand become more propionate. “What are you thinking about? I can partly hear the wheels in your head turn.”
It’s a simple question, but you can feel your skin heat up and your core throb as you press your legs together.
I’m thinking of you. You bending me over the countertop as your wet hands kneed my skin. Calloused fingertips pushing past the hem of my panties with ease. The feeling of your five-o’clock shadow against my inner thigh. Fucking into me, hot and slow.
You shake your head, shrugging, and bite back a smile, “Nothing.”
Tumblr media
The house is quiet as you move through it. Cold hardwood pressing to the balls of your feet, soon met with concrete as you walk outside. The moon cast a bright glow on your skin, filling you with calm and energy as you walked towards the pool.
Tossing your towel onto one of the pool chairs, you strip the clothes from your body. Nipples pebble, goosebumps spreading along your skin as you step into the water. You hummed, letting the warm water consume you as you lazily swam through it.
You heard the deck door open and shut up with a loud click. You quickly swam to the pool’s edge, trying to hide your bare body as you blinked the water from your eyes, the figure still blurry in the distance.
“What are you doing out here? It’s one in the morning.” Cal’s voice settles familiar in your ears, causing a wave of embarrassment mixed with euphoria down your spine.
“Just a late night swim,” You rest your chin against the edge of the pool, concert rough against the skin.
He cocks his brow, sitting on the edge of one of the pool chairs. “You always were a weirdo.” He shakes his head, tapping his pack of cigarettes against his thigh before pulling one out and placing it between his lips. “But you love me.” You smile, pushing yourself off the edge of the pool.
“Could you throw me the towel?” He tosses it to you before cupping his hand to cover the cig as he lights it, the small flame casting a warm glow onto his skin.
You say a small thank you, grabbing the towel as you make your way to the steps of the pool, wrapping it around you as you make your way out of the water. You wrap the towel tighter around your bare body, fully realizing the situation that you’re in. Naked. In front of the guy, you’ve been in love with your whole life.
He takes a long drag off his cigarette, dark eyes landing on yours. You clear your throat, skin prickling with heat under his gaze. “Can I have one?”
“You?” he chuckles, smoke slipping between his lips. “Have you ever even smoked before?”
You shift in your seat, the cold plastic sticking slightly to your wet thighs. “No, but what does that matter? God, stop acting like my brother.” You shove his arm gently, biting back a smile.
He laughs gently. “Sorry, sorry.” taking another drag. “Why don’t you shotgun it first?”
“Okay.” your words are quite as Calum moves next to you, warmth radiating off his body as he takes another long pull off the cig, letting it settle in his chest for a moment before he cups your face. Calloused hands on your skin, making your hair stand on edge. Your lips part as smoke slips past Calum’s, the queue for you to slowly inhale.
The warmth of his body, mixed with the unfamiliar menthol feeling, makes you feel light-headed. Your arms wrap around Calum’s neck, closing the gap between your bodies. “Y/N..” he breathes out before you connect your lips. It’s soft and hesitant until he slowly melts into you. Strong arms wrapping around your waist, pulling you even closer.
He tastes like smoke and mint, consuming all your senses as your hand slips up his shirt. He quickly pulls away, breath hitched and lips slightly plump from friction. “Y/N, I, we… We can’t do this. I’m sorry.”
He stands quickly, shaky hands stubbing out the cig. His mouth opens, trying to find the right thing to say, but nothing comes out. He briefly looks at you, eyes dark, before walking back into the house.
The familiar click of the deck door settled the reality of it all. You’re an idiot, and he doesn’t feel the same.

5SOS SHOW
You have been friends with the boys since the beginning of their career. You were one of the 11 people at their first show. You went to their rehearsals at Luke's moms house. And now you were sitting on the side watching them record their 10 year anniversary show. They were filming Gotta Get Out and your mind starts having flashbacks to the past 10 years.
2011
You are there sitting behind the camera as Luke and Michael tune their guitars and Calum and Ash set up the mics. They all sit down on their respective seats. You give them a countdown and then start the camera. Luke starts to play the guitar followed by ash on the drums (whatever that thing is). You make eye contact with calum and blush. You knew the boys from school and had a small crush on Calum so when Luke asked you to help with the video you obviously said yes. You had a little bit of experience with videography. By the time you zone back in they had finished the song. You told them you would edit it and get it back to them. You head back home and edit the video and send it back to them. The next day calum sees you after school
“(Y/N) (Y/N)” Cal is practically screaming. You whip your head around to see who is screaming at you. “We are going viral” he says out of breath.
“Wait, slow down cal. What? Y’all are going viral?” You say questioning.
“The video you edited for us, it’s going viral” he says as he finally catches his breath.
“That’s amazing! I’m so happy for you” you say, grabbing his shoulders. He pulls you into a hug out of excitement. It takes you a second to realize that he is hugging you then you hug back. You both pull away with red tinting both of your cheeks.
“Me and the boys would like it if you helped with our videos from now on.”
You agreed and from then on you helped with all of their video stuff from covers to vlogs.
2013
You were there when they launched their first ep. You were there when they went to London. You were sitting with them when Heartbreak Girl hit 1 million views. You were there for the try hard music video. When they told you that they were going on tour with 1D you were over the moon. You were so proud of them. When they asked you to go with them you almost started crying because that meant that you got to meet the One Direction. Of course you said yes. You went to America with them and helped film and edit the LA Vlogs. You traveled the world with them and you became so close with all of them. But you grew extremely close to calum. You would say he was your best friend. You still had your crush on him but you never said anything. You had also grown kinda close to Niall which made Calum a little jealous but he never brought it up.
2014
Release of 5 Seconds of Summer
You went on the Rock Out With Your Socks Out Tour that supported the album. Calum’s feelings for you had grown but he had always pushed them to the back of his mind due to fear of messing up the dynamic of your friendship with the band and also out of fear of the public. He had seen how other celebrities’ girlfriends had gotten hate and didn’t want you to experience that. But Luke, Micheal and Ash knew how you both felt and tried to get yall together but it just went right over both of your
2015
The release of SGFG
There were so many people there and you didn’t know a lot of them. You were always behind the camera. People knew of you but you were never in the spotlight. You were always the support. And now you were in a room full of people who live in the spotlight. There were flashing lights and loud music so you found a small couch in the corner and were sitting by yourself.
“(Y/n) how are you enjoying the party,” Luke had come up to me without me knowing.
“God Luke, you can’t sneak up on me like that dude.”
“Sorry man, I just saw you sitting by yourself and came to check on you” he says sympathetically.
“I’m okay I just don’t know a lot of people here,” you say quietly.
“Well I think Cal is looking for you and you know him” he says in a teasing tone while poking your side.
“Shut up please, I’ll go find him in a little bit” you say, slapping his hand away. He gets up, gives you a wink and then turns to leave. Now you are sat there thinking about all the feelings you have for Cal that you have bottled up over the past 4 years. You have been with him and the band for so long. You loved him. You couldn’t deny it much longer. When you were with him you were always laughing. He knew you like the back of his hand and vice versa. When you were upset you would always make you laugh by telling a stupid joke or something along those lines. When he was upset you would always help him work it through. He loved you for that. You were so intune with your emotions and gave the best advice. You were about to get up to find him and you see him standing there in the light looking like a god. He had on a graphic tee with black skinny jeans and converse. He looked beautiful in the lights. You get and walk over to him.
“(Y/N) you look amazing tonight, are you having fun?” He says yelling over the music.
“ Hey Cal, you look great, I’m having fun, Luke said you were looking for me” you yell.
“ Well I’m always looking for you”he says winking “but i just wanted to check on you, make sure you were having fun.”
You are slightly blushing now that you were used to him flirting. “Yeah, I’m having a good time, i might go home soon. You know this isn’t really my scene.”
“Aww (Y/n), please don’t go. We can have fun, I promise.”
“Idk cal, you know I’m not the party type.”
“(Y/n) please don’t make me beg.” He says starting to get on his knees. Now you are beet red. You grab Calum's arms and pull him up.
“Fine cal, I’ll stay” His face lights up as he pulls you into a hug. You end up having an amazing time. Playfully flirting back and forth all night.
2018
The release of Youngblood.
You went on tour with them for the Meet You There Tour. After one of the LA shows you all went to a bar to celebrate. You sat at the bar waiting to get a drink, the boys were sat up in the VIP section with drinks in their hands. While you are waiting for your drink, you look over and see Cal sat next to this beautiful girl. She had long blonde hair in a tight beautiful dress. You couldn’t help but feel a little jealous. So after you got your drink you continued to sit at the bar instead going back to the VIP section. You then felt a little tap on your shoulder , you turn around and see the one and only Niall Horan. You stood up and gave him a hug.
“Niall, oh my goodness, it's so good to see you. It’s been years. How have you been?” You say stepping back from your hug.
“Oh (Y/n), it is amazing to see you. I am good. You look amazing!” He says gesturing to you.
“Thank you so much Niall.” You say as you finish your drink, then ask for another one. You are hammering back drinking while having a conversation with Niall. By the end of your 30 minute long conversation you are pretty drunk. At this point you are telling Niall about how you are in love with Cal and you are jealous of the girl who was sitting next to him.
“(Y/n), what girl? Calum is sitting by himself staring at you”, he says matter of factly.
“What are you talking about? There was a gorgeous girl sitting next to him. She was all over him” you say, kind of slurring your words. He turns your body to look at the VIP section and Cal was sitting there by himself staring you down.
Calum had just sat down when this blonde girl came over to him. He looks over at her as she sits down. She starts to speak and he’s pretending to listen. He didn’t want to talk to other girls, he was just waiting on you to get back to save him. He finally realizes that you are taking so long so he turns away from the girl to see you hugging Niall. He watched as you talk to Niall and he has a pain in his chest. He watches you talk to Niall and you look absolutely stunning. All the feelings of jealousy from when they were on tour with 1D came rushing back. At this point the girl had gotten up because Cal was ignoring her. When Niall turn you towards him, you make eye contact with him. He stands up and walks over you. Niall says hey to cal and gives him a hug and hands you off to him.
“(Y/n) how much have you had to drink?” He says with worry as you almost fall out of your chair.
“I have no idea but why do you care? Why don’t you go talk to that blonde chick.” You slurred with an attitude.
“ What are you taking about?” He says and then you point in the direction of the girl. He looks over his shoulder and scoffs.
“I didnt want to talk to her. I was waiting on you to save me and you didn’t come back.” He states as he helps you stand.” Im taking you home. You are so drunk.”
You finally made it outside and you can’t help but stare at him. He is wearing black jeans, a white button up with a leather jacket and black boots. He looked so good.
“ Cal, I can’t do this much longer” you say with tears brimming your eyes.
“Do what (Y/n)?” He asked, confused.
“ I can’t keep watching girls obsess over you and not be able to call you mine. I'm so in love with you it hurts. I have liked you for the past 7 years, and I never said anything because I didn’t want to hold you back but seeing you with that gorgeous girl hurt. I couldn’t stop telling Niall about you. I talked about you almost the whole time. You are everything I have ever wanted. You are so kind and so thoughtful. You always know how to make me laugh and cheer me up when I’m crying. I don’t ever want to lose you but I can't sit back and not tell you how I feel. I just have to get it out. My feelings for you are so strong I just have to tell you.” At this point you are crying, tears streaming down your face. Calum looks so conflicted. There are so many thoughts running through his head. He is so happy that you liked him back, he was confused as why you thought that he was interested in other girls. He was sad that you were crying and he didn’t know what to do. After a good minute of silence he grabs your face, wipes your tears, and kisses you. You were shocked and it took you a second to kiss him back.
“You are drunk, lets get you home and we can talk about it in the morning.” He says and he takes your hand and starts walking home. The next morning you wake up with a headache and an arm wrapped around your waist. You turn around to see Cal laying next to you.
“Good morning, love.” He says with a deep morning voice.
“Goodmorning, what happened last night?” You ask with worry on your face.
“Well you got jealous, got drunk and then confessed your love to me, and then when we back here you told me you didnt want to sleep alone so i stayed over” he says nonchalantly.
“Fuck. Cal Im so sorry, I didnt want to tell you because I didnt want to make things weird between us, you are my best friend.” You put your head in your hands embarrassed.
“Do you mean it?” He ask.
‘What?’
“Do you mean it (Y/n)?”
“Yeah” you say looking at him. He grabs your face and he kisses you. You kiss back, and you felt a spark. When you finally pull away he just looks at you.
“(Y/n) I practically begged Luke to ask you to film that video. I have had a crush on you since year 9. I never had a reason to talk to you but I knew you liked videography so I mentioned you to the boys and Luke said you were friends. I would not leave him alone until he asked you. There were so many times that I wanted to confess by undying love for you but I chicken out. Like at the release party for Sounds Good Feels Good. Luke came up to me and told me that I should do it and that he told you that I was looking for you but when I saw you I got nervous. You are my dream girl but I never wanted to put you in a weird position and I didnt want you to get hate if you did like me back.” He confesses while holding your face in his hands.

The release of CALM
You were in lockdown with your boyfriend of three years, Calum. You had kept your relationship with him a secret and the fans didn't think anything different because you were always around. They had their theories but they have had them since the boys got big, but you were a pretty private person. You had just made dinner for you and Cal. You had made your plates, feed Duke, and you make your way to Cal’s office to give him his dinner because he is on a call with the boys. You walk in, place his food down and kiss his head and as your are about to leave he just kinda looks at you with worry in his eyes.
“What’s wrong babe?” You ask with a worried look on your face. He looks at the computer then tells the boys he will be right back and puts himself of mute.
“Love, this is live. So now I think this means our relationship is public.”
“What?” You ask with shock on your face.
“You just called me babe and kissed me on stream.” He says calmly.
“Are you mad at me?” You ask holding is hand in yours.
“What? No love, I’m not mad at all. It is kinda funny, and now i get to finally post all of the cute pictures i have of you and duke.” He says with the laugh you love so much.
“Okay baby. Im sorry to interrupt,” and you kiss him as you leave. He goes back to the live stream and says “Well I guess its out, that is my girlfriend (Y/n). Some of you might know her she used to film all our vlogs back in like 2014. She has been friends with us since the beginning.” Luke chimes in with “be nice to her” and Michael and Ash backing him up. As you get back to the kitchen to eat Duke jumps up in your lap and you decide to check twitter and you are getting so many followers and many tweets of the clip from the live stream. You got a little bit of hate but so much love. You decide to tweet a picture of Cal and duke with the caption “now that we are public, here is a picture that Cal took on my phone of him and duke” and immediately there were so many replies and it was mainly people saying that they were excited for all the cal content they would get. It made you giggle but you shut your phone off and finished your dinner.

5SOS SHOW
As all those memories flood though your mind you begin to tear up. Watching the boys sing Gotta Get Out has reminded you of where they had come from and how proud of them you were. You have watched them grow and come so far. They had just finished singing and Calum looks over to you and walks over to you. He grabs your face and looks into your eyes.
“My love, what’s wrong?” He says kind of giggling.
“I'm just so proud of you and the boys. I was there when you first filmed this song and I have watched you all grow so much. I'm just so proud of y’all.” You say as tears stream your face. Chrystal and Sierra had seen you crying and were right by your side. You had grown very close to the girls over the last couple of years. Soon all the boys were all around you too. The girls had heard your explanation to Cal, but the boys were so concerned. You looked at Cal standing next to Ash, Micheal, and Luke and started crying more. They just look at Cal with so much concern.
You finally calm down and say, “I am so proud of you boys. I have loved being able to be here throughout your entire careers, you have done huge things and seeing you play that song the same way it was the first time I heard it was surreal. I have watched you go from 14 year old boys to men and it is amazing. You guys are my family and I’m just so proud.”
They all gather around you and give you a big group hug.
“We wouldn’t be the people we are today without you (N/n),” Luke says.
“You were our rock during so many crazy times,” Ashton adds.
“You helped shape 5sos, you kept us going when we wanted to quit,” Micheal blurted out.
You were in full blown tears now, and cal looks at you and says “You were what we needed when we didn't know we needed it. You are the band's backbone. You may not have been in the spotlight, and you may have not told you but we love you and like what Luke says we wouldn’t be here without you. We love you. But I think I love you in a bit of a different way though.” He kisses you on the head and you give him a big hug and when you pull away you give Luke, Micheal, and Ash hugs.

“hi hun!” you beamed through the phone, panning to your side where duke laid, passed out. “i know it’s late there but i just woke up. i’ve got to run a few errands and then i have a meeting for work later. i hope tour is going well, i miss you bunches. i love you!” you frowned, then blew a kiss for the camera and ended the video.
calum couldn’t count how many times he watched the video, seeing your beautiful smile and duke laying in bed with you. his heart ached to be away from home. especially after two years of being home, he hated the idea of leaving you alone but you had assured him you would be okay. so, to help you thought you’d send calum videos during your day so he wouldn’t miss anything.
naturally, he loved them.
“mom is stopping by to help with work around the house” you were walking in the hallway, from your bedroom to the living room. “oh, and” you paused, walking to the couch and turning the camera around. “duke misses you.” you showed duke laying in his spot on the sofa. “but i miss you more” you panned the camera back around to you smiling brightly.
on days he had off, he would check the time zones and if he knew you’d be awake he’d call. specifically facetime. he had to see your face.
“i love your videos” he smiled, shifting his computer to the bar table on the bus. you laughed, “i’m glad my efforts are being seen” he chuckled, rubbing his eyes. “just two months left. but it feels like it’s going by so slow” he finally changed the subject. “i know” you frowned, “but once it’s over you’ll get the well-deserved break you need. me and duke will baby you the entire time” you held the dog up to the camera, who obviously had no idea what was going on but he looked happy nonetheless.
“i know you’re tired, but, all the videos i’ve seen from the shows you looked so happy. so alive on stage” he smiled, recalling all of the memories. “i love being on stage, y/n. i can be myself, i love seeing the fans. i love all of it but, i just miss being home. i miss being with you” his smile soon turned into a frown.
the call lasted hours, the two of you just catching up. well, mainly it was just him telling you his best memories with the guys thus far. you had kept him updated on life at home, and he was finally telling you about life on tour.
the weeks following, your messaging was beginning to get shorter. no more videos, very rarely would you even send a photo. your responses were relatively one word. calum began to get worried, often trying to call and when you did answer you kept it short.
he began to wonder if he had done anything to upset you, was it the call? what could’ve happened for you to become distant like that? but, you had your reasons.
he checked his phone as he stood outside of the dressing room. you hadn’t messaged him for almost two days, no video or update on how you were. calum began to get worried, he would send you messages when he could but he still got no reply.
finally, he tried calling. it immediately went to your voicemail. he took his phone away from his ear and sent you another text.
“i’m so worried. please text me back.”
“excuse me, do you know where i can find a calum hood?” a voice spoke from behind him, he shot up from his phone and spun around to find you. all of his worries were relieved seeing your face. calum stuffed his phone into his pocket before walking to you and taking you in his arms.
you could’ve sworn you saw tears in his eyes, but he wouldn’t admit it.
he held you so tightly. lifting you off the ground, spinning you. “oh my god” he spoke into your skin. “i’ve been so fucking worried, y/n” he gently put you back on the floor, pulling away to look at you. “why are you here?”
you grinned, “the guys have been telling me you’ve been feeling down. so, i’ve spent two weeks planning this whole thing. hence my absence.” you admitted. he pulled you in for a quick kiss, “i love you for that, but don’t you ever scare me like that again” you laughed, “okay”.
it had been a long week for calum, it was finally nearing the last month of tour. he was very drained both physically and mentally. so, when you surprised him, it was the perfect timing. “you didn’t have to come.” he murmured, head resting on your chest. now back at the hotel room. “i did, i wanted to” you hummed. he shifted, looking up at you.
“it means so much. i’ve missed you so fuckin much. it’s been so hard” he felt like he hadn’t seen you in years. yes, the videos you sent helped but it just wasn’t the same.
“well you have me the rest of this tour, then we can go on a nice vacation or a staycation. whichever you prefer.” you pressed a kiss on the top of his head. he laid there, just smiling at you. he couldn’t stop looking at you, he longed to be in your presence for so long so he wanted to savor the moment.
“why are you looking at me like that?” you laughed, even after all these years he could make you bashful without even trying.
“i’m just realizing how in love with you i am, and how much you mean to me.”

A Hug Is All It Takes
Tumblr media
A/N: sorry it's been a hot minute. i just finished my first year of college, so moving home was a process :)
Pairing: Calum Hood x GN!Reader
Summary: you just really need a hug.
Warnings: bad ending, slight mention of mental health (nothing serious)
Word Count: 846
Minors DNI (no smut, just not comfortable with you interacting)!!
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Something was on your mind, and the boys were starting to get concerned.
Usually, you were one the most lively people they knew. Lately, you’d been the opposite. You weren’t constantly cracking jokes, or talking to anyone who even glanced in your direction, weren’t smiling and laughing every second.
Instead, you were quiet, shy, introverted - not yourself, in short.
No one knew what triggered it. All they knew is that one day you were you, and the next, you weren’t.
It could have been any number of factors. Your job, your family, your friends, anything really. The boys initially tried not to make a big deal of it, choosing to try to cheer you up as subtly as possible.
They brought you snacks throughout the day, and that put a smile on your face, for a few minutes at least.
They told you every joke they could think of, but never got more than a small chuckle.
After 3 weeks, they were starting to get very concerned.
You were stressed. You had gotten some not so great news from your mom, your sister had picked another fight with you and wasn’t talking to you at the moment. Your boss had given your promised promotion to an employee who’d been working there for less than 2 months. Two of your friends were caught up in their own petty drama that you somehow got dragged into.
And your mental health was taking a serious hit. You usually tried to keep everyone around you happy because that kept you happy, but lately, that hasn't been enough.
No matter how much the boys tried, your mood just couldn’t be improved.
There was one thing you could think of, but you wouldn’t bother.
You weren’t a super touchy person, preferring to stay in your own personal space and out of others’.
However, the only thing that had been on your mind for the last few weeks, was a hug. The simplest thing, something you hadn’t had in quite some time, would quite literally solve all of your problems.
But considering you hadn’t had much personal contact with the boys besides a quick high five, you weren’t sure how to ask any of them for a hug.
One day was exceptionally bad. You were supposed to meet the boys at the studio at 9, but when you spilled your coffee down your shirt at 8:45, you knew that likely wasn’t going to happen.
And then when you got in your car at 8:49 and discovered that you wouldn’t have enough gas to even make it to the studio, you knew it wasn’t happening.
At 9:05, when you finally left the gas station, you realized you’d left your laptop at home and would have to make the trip back.
It was 9:14 when the first text message lit up your phone, a crabby text from Luke asking where you were and why you were so late.
By 9:27 you were pulling into the studio parking lot, realizing then that you had amassed 7 more text messages from the boys, all wondering why you were running nearly half an hour late.
You stood outside your car for a minute, collecting yourself. After a few deep breaths and a pep talk, you were walking inside.
You made your way through the studio to where the boys were, greeting them with an apology, only to be met with silence.
Were they seriously that mad at you? Lovely.
A few hours later, around noon, the five of you decided it was time for a lunch break. You were the first to leave the room.
You made your way through the building to the break room, hoping to sit in there by yourself for a few minutes before you would leave to go get food.
10 minutes later, Calum walked in, stopping in the doorway as he took in your mood. He regarded you for a few seconds before he spoke up.
“I know you don’t like them, but you look like you could use a hug.”
Your eyes immediately welled up in tears. He had no idea how right he was.
When he noticed this, he took a few steps towards you. You stood up and closed the distance, wrapping your arms tightly around his waist as his wrapped around your shoulders.
For a few minutes, you just stood there, tears silently falling from your eyes as you took in the feeling of being held for the first time in however long. Too long.
Eventually, Calum pulled away from you, giving you a worried look.
“Are you okay? Do you want to talk about it?”
You shook your head, burying your head back against his chest. He allowed you to do so, not pushing the subject.
After a few minutes, you realized how hungry you were, and pulled away.
He held your eye contact for a few seconds before you spoke up.
“Thank you.” You said. “You have no idea how much I needed that.”
He gave you a warm smile.
“Anytime.”

Since our tense conversation — I can’t call it a fight, nor do I want to — Calum has texted me at least once every hour that he’s awake. It’s refreshing. He’s a much better partner and boyfriend than any of my previous relationships in all regards, so it shouldn’t come as a surprise that he’s actually following up on what he says.
My ex that I’d dated from the start of freshman year through a few months before I left for Spain was horrible about texting me. He’d always forget to text me good night, then didn’t bother to reply to my good mornings. We wouldn’t start texting until I’d text him again a few hours later. I would time that message by posting a Snapchat story and then waiting to see if he’d viewed it. It was toxic, and he never followed up on his promises that things would get better and he’d text me more.
It had always felt silly to get so hung up on something so seemingly small, but it kept being a recurring problem. He always promised that he would text me more and show me just how important I was, but the proof never showed up.
With Calum, the moment he knows I have a problem with something, he works to fix it. This is another instance of it. While it may only be two days after he promised he’d keep in better contact with me, he has upheld his promise impeccably.
Just more reasons to love him, and more reason to be racked with guilt from keeping a massive, literally life or death, secret from him.
Today is round three of chemotherapy, and since we both are going to the same place, Macy and I are going together. Her mom will drop us off and Emelia will pick us up. I’ve packed my fluffy blanket again, along with Uno and a phone charger. It’s yet again another day where I wear one of Calum’s left-behind sweatshirts with a pair of shorts that are hidden underneath the oversized top. With my worn-out but very comfortable Birkenstocks, I’m wearing fuzzy socks.
Macy knocks on my door to let me know she’s here, and I give Duke a peanut butter filled Kong to keep him busy while I’m gone. I swing open the door and find her standing there, wearing an outfit almost identical to mine, except her sweatshirt is likely her own, with UCSD in large, embroidered block letters across the chest.
“Good morning,” I tell her. I close the door behind myself and lock it.
“Damn, I really thought I might get an Orion latte this morning,” she pouts.
“Oh, shit, I can go back in and make you one? It’ll only take a few minutes.”
Macy shakes her head. “No, I’m fine. Maybe next time, though?”
I nod and we start walking toward the elevator. “Yeah, next time. How are you feeling today?”
Macy has just this week and next week left on this treatment cycle. Her team is pretty confident that this final round should hopefully send her back into remission and she can resume her coursework in the spring. After years of going in and out of treatment, Macy doesn’t want to get her hopes up, so she’s currently still planning on starting school again in the fall next year. That said, she’s felt pretty miserable for the past few weeks.
Her cancer — Hodgkin’s lymphoma — is currently just in stage one, caught early because she has regular visits to her oncologist over the years to monitor. While my treatment is supposed to be six weeks of chemo appointments, hers is only three weeks, but she has them twice a week.
“Like death, but, just means it’s working,” she says, pressing the button for the lobby. “You?”
“Same.”
We ride down to the lobby in silence, listening to the hum of the machinery that makes it move. There’s no elevator music, which I’m grateful for since I don’t know if I could listen to it every time I take the elevator. When the doors slide open, we find Ron behind the desk like normal, and he smiles when he sees us. I fight to smile back at him.
“Good morning!” He calls out.
Macy and I both raise a hand in a haphazard wave.
“Morning, Ron,” I manage to reply.
Macy’s mom is waiting for us in the car in the parking garage, and she’s on some kind of business call when we get in, so she doesn’t say anything to us as we buckle our seatbelts and she pulls out of the parking space. Macy and I are both just on our phones for the drive, since her mom’s call seems pretty important and I don’t want my voice to be echoing in the background.
I check my phone for the first time since I woke up and see that Ashton has texted me. It’s in the wee hours of the morning in Adelaide, which is where they should be now, so I’m going to guess that he’s out partying or just coming back to their hotel from it.
From: irwie will you be honest can you tell me how you’re really doing none of the bs where you pretend you’re fine i’m worried i can’t stop thinking about it i can’t sleep i know you and i know you’re pretending it’s all fine and you’re not miserable. please just give me a real update
After reading through, I decide he’s probably not drunk. I don’t think he is out either. I think he’s probably just laying in his bed and overthinking. Kay is probably sound asleep next to him. I triple check the time conversion, and it’s 3:42 am there. I wish that he was as blind to what I’m actually doing back in LA as Calum is.
To: irwie ash, please go to sleep i’ll be fine
Calum had texted me goodnight a few hours prior, too, complete with a selfie of him wearing a sweatshirt I bought him, but I wait to reply to him, since I don’t want the notification to wake him up. I’ll send a message in a few hours while Macy and I get our drips of poison.
Ashton replies almost immediately.
From: irwie orion, please it’s late, i just want to know the truth
To: irwie ash… it’s fine just go to sleep
From: irwie stop it. tell me the truth
To: irwie i’m not lying. it’s fine. it’s gonna be fine
From: irwie you keep saying that but i literally don’t believe you at all just give me an ounce of the truth please
To: irwie oh my god fine i’ve lost 10 pounds bc i’m so nauseous i can barely eat and my body feels like it’s covered in bruises but there are no bruises it just hurts and i’m so fucking tired there’s your update
There’s no activity from Ashton after I send that, and when I look up, we’re at the hospital. Macy’s mom is still on the phone, so we quietly open our doors. I get out of the car and I watch as her mom gives her arm a squeeze, and then Macy joins me. We walk inside and check in, and then we go our separate ways to get our vitals taken.
When we reconvene at the armchairs, Macy is waiting for me.
“My mom says she’s sorry she couldn’t talk in the car,” she mentions as I sit down.
Two employees come over with their carts to hook us up to the IVs. As usual, I close my eyes so I don’t have to watch it happen.
“No, it’s okay, I know she has work.”
I feel the coolness of the wipe on my arm, and I brace for the impact of the needle in my skin. With the pinch, I feel my phone vibrate on my lap.
“I told her you wouldn’t mind, but I just wanted you to know she did apologize.”
I nod, my eyes still shut. When I feel tape over the IV in my arm, I open my eyes again, giving the nurse who’d done it a smile. She tells us to let them know if we need anything before they disappear to tend to other patients.
“Tell her I said thank you for the ride,” I say. I pull my phone out again, seeing what the notification is. It’s Ashton, unsurprisingly.
From: irwie orion promise me you’ll ask for help if you really need it we can’t lose you
His third text is gut-wrenching enough to send me into an emotional spiral, but I do my best to hold myself together. I fight the urge to start crying in the middle of this room where I’m surrounded by people who are all fighting the same battle. It would feel like I’m belittling them. We’re all struggling through the same thing. Why would I be special enough to cry while everyone else is acting fine?
I take a deep breath before I reply.
To: irwie i’m fine. it’s fine.
From: irwie can you please stop lying
To: irwie everything remains as is until i can tell calum.
When he doesn’t reply instantly, I follow up again.
To: irwie please, please go to sleep.
From: irwie 👍
Now he’s mad at me, but hopefully he will at least go to sleep now.
Frustratedly, I lock my phone and push it into the kangaroo pocket on my sweatshirt.
“You good?” Macy asks from next to me.
I gulp, rubbing my eyes. I feel like crying, but this isn’t the time or place. “Yeah, it’s fine. It’s just Ashton.”
“What do you mean?”
Macy knows that Ashton is the only one on the tour who knows about my leukemia, so I know she understands why there may be a problem there. I guess I didn’t really give much context, so her question is valid.
“So it’s like 3:30 am there and he’s texting me saying he can’t sleep and I need to tell him how I’m really doing.”
An unusual smile paints itself across her face. “And that bothers you?”
Bothering me isn’t exactly how I’d describe it. “I just want him to live his life.”
“Orion,” she starts. “Just because you’re stifling your emotions about this whole thing doesn’t mean he can.”
I’m not stifling my emotions. I’ve cried almost every day since Calum left. I feel like I’m drowning in everything that’s going on and it’s practically the only thing that I can think about. My little detour to feeling sad that Calum wasn’t communicating with me as much as I wanted him to was brief, and most of the time I’m just thinking about my literal impending doom.
“I’m not stifling my emotions.”
I don’t meet her eyes, but I know that she rolls them.
“Just because I’m not talking about them doesn’t mean I don’t have them,” I add.
“Can I be honest?” Macy asks.
“I’d prefer you always be honest, so yes.”
“I feel like you’re still in denial about all of this.”
When I don’t have something articulated to say straight away, she adds more.
“I don’t know if it’s truly all set in, and I think a lot of that stems from you not telling Calum.”
She’s probably right. I don’t feel like I can let myself really think everything through, because I know that once I do, I’m one step closer to calling Calum and messing everything up. I’ve worked too hard to protect Calum from my reality. I can’t just throw it all away because I get depressed about my lack of potential future. Even when I’m just home and all alone, I don’t let myself feel sad about the cancer. I just focus on being sad about being alone.
My life is ending, at a faster rate than most other people’s, but right now, I just feel like someone going through a long distance relationship while having the flu. I’m sick and I’m lonely but I don’t feel like I have really processed just how sick I actually am.

“As’in” Melody slurred, stomping her left, light-up Sketcher on top of the eye-level stool in front of Ashton. Ashton flinched from the loud noise, scooting back on the kitchen floor just a smidge. “Cooler ‘an you.”
“Of course you are, Mel,” smiled Ashton. He dug his ring-clad fingers gently into Melody’s sides. The brown-haired girl, with one foot on a step stool and the other, bare, foot holding her balance upon the floor burst into a fit of giggles. Laughing with her shoulders digging into her ears and arms struggling to get Ashton to release his grip. “Who said you could wear my dinosaur pajamas?”
“Mine, you - you jerk!” Melody stuttered. Her Uncle Luke stuck his hands underneath her arms and pulled her body from the ground. “Hey!”
“I was saving you from the tickles,” said Luke. “I could put-”
“No!” screamed Melody. She stuck the foot with a shoe on into Ashton’s face. “Off.” She commanded. Ashton rolled his eyes and unstrapped the velcro.
“Was dance practice fun?” Luke asked, pulling his niece’s whole body away from the shoe. With Ashton’s hand holding onto the rubbery bottom, it slid off easily. Melody nodded her head and struggled up the too large countertop. “Did you learn anything?”
Melody gained her stability and stood up straight. With high countertops, she seems to be an inch taller than Luke. “I can do a roll!” Melody stuck her hands straight in the air, preparing for a somersault.
Luke, Ashton, Calum, and Michael had been planning to build a house together since they were in grade school. A custom-built one with five bedrooms, three bathrooms, a Gameroom, an upstairs and a downstairs living room, a large kitchen, and a workout room built into a large shed just outside of the house, and a fully furnished, soundproof basement. Evita “Eve” Sanchez, a girl with luscious long black curls and dark freckles became their best friend and included on their house plans too. Only, Calum didn’t officially go through with the agreed plans and left the state after paying his part of the house, before it was finished.
“No!” Luke yelled, catching Melody before she started a somersault off the counter. “Let’s not do that. I don’t want Mommy to get mad at me.”
Calum’s bedroom was finished, and several arguments ensued between Michael and Eve over whether or not Melody’s nursery should’ve taken over her fathers’ room. Michael got his way, and Eve didn’t turn the barely-furnished room into a nursery. She bit her tongue every time she passed the empty room.
“Did you feed all of your animals, Mel?” Ashton asked, standing up from the floor. Melody gave him a single, hard nod. “Both dogs and your cat?” Melody nodded again. “Your ferrets and your lizard?”
“Mommy fed Norber’!”
“So Norbert was the only animal Mommy fed? If I go ask-”
“-Well . . . Phin and Ferb too.”
“That’s it? Norbert, Phineas, and Ferb?”
Melody bowed her head in shame. “Well . . .”
“If you don’t start feeding your mass abundance of pets, Mel, you know Mommy will get rid of them!” lied Luke. Melody, just like her father, has taken a liking for pets of all kinds. Melody isn’t allowed at the pet store very often because she’ll convince somebody into getting a new animal - lately, she’s been adding to the downstairs aquarium. “How about you give your ferrets some treats, and make sure Norbert has water?”
“Yes, Uncle, Lu’,” Melody sighed. Luke put her on her feet and pushed her towards the living room. She walked from the counter, towards Norbert The Leopard Gecko. Her favorite pets have to be Phineas and Ferb, twin ferrets. Their large cage sits in the downstairs living room for everyone to play with. Originally, Melody wanted their cage in her shared bedroom. Eve quickly said no.
“You aren’t supposed to tell a kid things like that, Hemmings,” a familiar voice said. Luke turned around from watching Melody. The blond didn’t want to believe who was standing in his kitchen, with arms crossed over his chest and a smirk like he’s the fucking leader. “Especially an animal lover like her. She’s got a heart like her daddy’s right? Dog lover and names on Petunia?”
“You think-” Luke started, flabbergasted at Calum’s accusations.
“-Don’t,” Ashton groaned. He faced the intruder that ran away only four years before. “What are you doing here?”
Calum let out a loud breath. “It’s my house too, right? Unless my bedroom was turned into a playground for - what’s her name? Melody?” His black combat boots his loudly, approaching Ashton and Luke quickly. His finger drug itself along the countertop then led a journey to his eyes. At least the house was clean. “So, who’s the mom?”
“Excuse me?” asked Luke.
“The kid - who’s her mom? Is it Evita? I bet you ten bucks y’all fucked and-”
“-Obviously she’s Eve, dumbass,” Luke bit down on his lip. He didn’t know if it was his right to inform Calum that - Guess what! - he had a kid after escaping the state.
“Never thought you’d get with her,” Calum flashed a look of betrayal on his gorgeous face. “What about the Bro Code?”
“I didn’t get with Eve-”
A loud cry cut off Luke’s explanation. He flipped around to see a chair collapsed on the ground, and Melody clutching her right arm close to her body. Luke and Ashton quickly bolted to their niece to see what happened.
“Help!” Melody screamed through tears. Michael and Eve joined Luke and Ashton within moments. Eve, just barely out of the shower, sat her daughter on top of her fluffy robe and asked what was wrong. “Hurts,” Melody cried and pointed toward her dominant hand.
“What happened?” asked Eve. Calum peered through the doorway at the cluster of adults servicing a three-year-old alien activist and Disney lover. Surprise overtook Calum when he watched how Eve messed with Melody’s arm. Within four years, Eve’s hair seemed to have darkened from chocolate brown to jet black and pink still wasn’t her color. Calum made out dark ink all along exposed skin.
“Norber’ want water,” Melody started before letting out a loud wail when Eve attempted to straighten Melody’s arm. “I want to give him ‘dat bottle, an’ I fell!”
“Luke, can you get her shoes on? I’ll put some clothes on and take her to the hospital.” Eve sighed. Calum was surprised at how sure she sounded, not hesitating to be stern in a time of need. Eve’s older sister broke her hand, and Eve completely freaked out and fainted on Calum. That wasn’t an enjoyable experience for him. “I’ll be back in a moment.”
Michael swept the small girl off the floor, giving affirmations that she’d be okay. He set her down on the counter and handed her mother his own jacket after she’d ran down the stairs in just a hoodie and a bra. “We have a visitor.” Michael griped, clenching his jaw hard. “What do we do?”
Eve looked at Calum watching Luke put Eve’s shoes back on. He seemed uncomfortable. “Fuck it, my kid just broke her arm and I couldn’t care less about him.” Eve wrapped Melody’s favorite blanket around her shoulders and picked her back up. “Calum, your daughter just broke her arm, want to come to the hospital with us?”
“Wh-what?” Calum sputtered. He shook his head, trying to hide his bulging, scared eyes.
-
“Where’s Michael?” Calum asked as he took a journey through the kitchen. He stopped behind the girl with a bright blue cast, chewing something that looked like a lazy attempt at pizza. He grimaced.
“Guitar!” Melody said before taking another bite. Tortilla, pizza sauce, and cheese piled together and microwaved on high for a single minute- that’s Melody and Michael’s favorite meals. Besides chicken strips, of course.
“What the hell does that mean?”
“That means he’s in the basement practicing with the guys,” explained Eve. She barely looked up from her load of dishes at her confused face. “What? Can’t she explain where they are?”
Calum looked disgusted. “Why can’t she just say they’re in the basement? Is she delayed?”
“She’s three, give her a fucking break before I break you,” Eve shoved a plate into the dishwasher and finally looked up at Calum. She couldn’t help that he still looked hot; messy curls, tan skin, and bright brown eyes. It was destined that Melody is the cutest kid in the world.
“What is she even eating?”
“Lunch.”
“That is not a meal,” said Calum. “That’s something you feed a child that won’t eat anything besides chicken strips and pizza.”
Eve locked eyes with Calum. Staring straight into his ripped soul. “Exactly.”
Calum scratched the side of his head with the tip of his middle finger. “Can you lead me to the basement?”
Eve smirked. “You should know the house, Cal,” she laughed. “You helped design it. Oh, wait, you-”
“-Yes!” Calum screamed. “I get it! I left! Just . . . fucking lead me to the basement please.”
“Fine,” Eve picked Melody up from the enjoyment of cheap pizza. Melody protested a little bit, but the pain in her arm came ‘round and she stopped. “Wanna’ give Uncle Mike some pizza?” Melody nodded her head and grabbed the plate with her good hand. “Let’s go/”
Melody, Eve, and Calum rounded the corner toward the back door and walked through the laundry room to find basement steps. With Melody on her his, and Calum sadly right behind her, Eve descended down the steps. Michael looked up from his controller and took the plate from Melody and shoved it into Luke’s chest, then took Melody in his arms.
“How’s the hand, Mel?” asked Michael. He kissed the big ‘CLIFFORD’ signature underneath her wrist.
“Hurts.”
“Well, of course, it’s going to hurt, you fell off a chair,” Melody scowled at her uncle. “What’re you guys doing down here?” he asked, dismissing Melody’s continuous sass. He placed her back on the floor.
“Just seeing what the house looks like,” Calum said, looking around the furnished basement. It’s large; larger than he’d remembered. There’s a bathroom behind the wooden staircase, a man cave to the left and a room with tons of band equipment to the right inside of a soundproof studio. Just in front of the stairs was Melody’s playroom. Calum had never seen so much pink. “Pretty nice. How do you guys pay for all of this?”
“Jobs, Cal,” Luke snapped. The youngest of the adults rolled his eyes. “Are you going to get one?”
“Wait, you guys have jobs? Why aren’t you working right now?”
“I’m a YouTuber,” Michael pointed to a section of the playroom with a backdrop and a nice camera, along with a gaming computer. “I can do whatever the fuck I want to.”
“Bet the rest of you don’t have jobs like that,” Calum shrugged, pointing to the rest of them. Melody already escaped to her dolls and barbies. “Probably mooch off all his money like the lowlifes you are.”
“Actually,” Luke snapped again. “I’m a teacher, and Eve is a tattoo artist.” Calum’s eyes went wide. Eve began to show off her ink to Calum. One really intrigued him; a feather on her left arm that dissolved into tiny fragments that formed ‘MELODY ANN’ on Eve’s wrist. There seems to be enough space for more children too. “Ashton works at KFC.”
“Please tell me you’re joking,” Calum pinched the bridge of his nose.
“Nah, dude, I’m a museum tour guide,” replied Ashton.
Calum snorted. “Nice one.”
“I’m serious.”
“Bone library, huh?” Calum laughed at his joke. His fingers reached for little toes right underneath Eve’s eat, tattooed in a seemingly-painful way. “What’s what one?” Eve pulled her shirt up just a little bit to reveal the tattoo she sat hours for. The design was as if Melody walked from the front of Eve’s left hip bone, to her back, up to Eve’s right shoulder blade and ended with Melody’s footprint right behind Eve’s ear. Though, she only had the right foot, as if she were waiting for another child to come along and step on her. “Are those actual feet? Like prints from when Melody was born?”
“Taken right from her birth certificate,”
Calum wanted to undress Eve and analyze all the ink beneath her skin. He wanted to know the story behind the entire canvas she’d printed on her back, sternum, legs, and arms. It would take a couple of hours to learn about three years' worth of tattoos. When Calum left, she had a single tattoo of five tally marks on her finger. Each mark was dedicated to her friend group.
“You think I could get a job? Who’s the owner of the shop?” Calum asked. Eve pulled her shirt back down and laughed loudly. “What?”
“I’m the owner, asshole,” said Eve. “You can’t even draw a stick figure. Unless you’re buying, don’t come to my shop.”
“You’re a bitch,”
“I know,”
“Cut the shit, what are you doing here?” Michael asked when Eve and Ashton walked away to play with Melody. Calum ruffles the front of Michael’s blue hair. “Seriously. Why did you just randomly show up?”
“Did some stupid things,” Calum laughed. “Turns out sometimes you have to pay to perform. Dropped out of high school, so music is all I got.”
“Then what are you going to do for a job?” Luke asked, stepping up close to Calum. Michael and Luke were trying to intimidate him, make him see how stupid he is for leaving everything behind one day, leave without a warning, and show up randomly. He’ll never get off scot-free while living with them. “We’ve got people to support. A house to live in. You’re going to have to pay bills.”
“You’re joking,” Calum chuckled. Luke and Michael didn’t break their stares off the man. “I don’t have a way to get a job. I’m not good at anything. Can’t I just watch Eve’s kid and be okay?”
“You don’t get paid for watching your own child,” Michael replied in a low voice. “I don’t care if you helped design the place. It’s time to pay bills.”
Calum locked eyes with Michael. “She’s not my kid.” He pulled the curls falling into his eyes back and combed through the dark locks with his fingers. Their intimidation wasn’t working on him. “Guess I’ll have to get a job. Ain’t got nowhere else to go.”
-
Calum shivered underneath the orange tip of a washable marker. Its cold sensation ent socks through his arms, resulting in goosebumps and for Melody to color outside of the tattoo lines. He looked down where Melody sighed and takes in the sight; Melody, with eyebrows scrunched up and her little tongue poking through her teeth, and a marker sitting between her fingers. She was very focused.
Calum notices that their hair curls the same way, and their hair color is the same shade. He catches a curl, twirling it around his digits. A knot sticks around Calum’s finger, catching skinny strands along one of his rings.
Melody yipped. “Hey!” she whined, pulling her head far away from Calum. She rubbed the spot Calum assaulted and acted as if she were to cry. Melody’s dark lip begins to quiver and she burst into a fit of sobs. “Mommy!”
Eve ran into the kitchen, halfway through braiding her hair back for work. “What’s going on?” Eve asked, staring straight at Calum. Quickly, Eve wraps her arms around Melody. Melody laid her head against Eve’s chest. “What’s wrong baby?”
Calum looked down at his hands. “I was messing with her, and I accidentally pulled her hair a little bit,” he answered. Melody continued to cry. “I . . . I didn’t mean to.”
“It’s okay,” Eve answered for Melody. Melody calmed her loud fries and looked back at her father. “It was just an accident. Can you tell him that you’re alright?”
Melody shook her head. “Not ‘right-”
“-Melody Ann, you are perfectly fine. Can you tell him that?”
Melody shook her head again. “Go to work with no?” Eve shook her head as a reply. One occasion, just a few months before Calum showed up, Melody walked into Eve’s tattooing shop for her birthday and got her very own Crayola tattoo of a sunflower on her right thigh. Since that day, she’d used all efforts to get another. “Pwease?”
As they say, you get addicted to the feeling of tattoos.
“I thought you wanted Calum to watch you?”
Melody had requested that ‘Uncle Calum’ put her to bed while Eve was working. Calum disagreed, argued with Eve about how Melody isn’t his kid and Eve needs to find her own babysitter. Calum continued to argue with Eve until Melody’s big brown eyes looked up at his, and she held a handful of markers underneath his nose. She sat next to him on the counter and asked if they could play tattoos. Calum was confused until she began to color in Mali Koa’s bird.
“No!” Melody screamed. “Hurt me!”
“Mel,” Calum whispered. He felt terrible. “It was just an accident.” He’d never had such a feeling of guilt, even the day he ran from New Jersey to New York on the small promise of a successful music career. He’d been promised by an agency that if he left New Jersey, he’d have a good life filled with wealth and fame, as long as he left home quick. His parents told him if he left, to never come back. “I’ll never do it again. I promise.”
“Promise?” Melody stuck her pinky out for Calum to wrap with his own. Calum gave her a stern nod and hooked their fingers together. “Good Uncle Cal.”
Eve’s face dropped. Uncle? Eve wants to break all habits Melody developed around Calum. Telling people he’s her uncle, even calling him Uncle Calum. Eve wants to tell Melody to call him an asshole, a fucking jerk, a liar, and most importantly, Dad. Calum was only comfortable with Uncle Calum. Eve turned around when he’d said that the day after Melody broke her arm, told Calum to ‘choke on her dick’ and stomped away.
“Face masks?” Melody asked, forgetting she’d just been crying. She drug her pointer finger along her face in areas you’d put on a face mask. “Yes?”
“I’m not doing a face mask,” stated Calum. “Never.”
“Liar,” Eve snorted. “You did them with me all the time when we were teenagers.”
“We did a lot of stupid things when we were teenagers, Eve. I’m not doing face masks.”
“Did I just hear Calum reference how bad he is at sex and facemasks?” Luke called, walking through the laundry room. He offered up his arms for Melody to enter and had a pouncing three-year-old in his arms. She thwacked the side of his face with her cast. “Ouch. Jeez.”
Melody got close to Luke’s ear to whisper. “What’s sex?” she asked. Luke looked towards Calum and Eve for an answer but Calum hid his face. Tiny fingers pointed at the pair. “Sex.”
“Well, tech-”
“-Hemmings!” Eve interrupted. Luke’s face flashed terror of the five-foot-nothing girl. “You want to do a face mask with Uncle Lu?”
“Blue one!”
Luke stared down at the floor. The last time Melody, Luke, Michael, and Ashton had done the blue face masks - Melody’s favorite color - they all ended up with blue splotches spread on their faces for a few days afterward. Luke refused to show his bare face in public and stole a whole bottle of Eve’s dark foundation just be able to go to work. Michael slathered his face in blue paint for a YouTube video and played Fortnite. Their lives are very different.
However much Luke wanted to please Melody, he doesn’t want to wear foundation several shades too dark for his complexion. He took his phone out and texted Michael to grab Eve’s golden mask out of his bedroom. He may have stolen it from her. She’ll never know.
“I’m not putting that shit on my face, Eve,” whined Calum.
“You don’t have to,” Luke smiled. “You can leave, or go to your room, or do something that’s not bothering us.”
“You’re seriously just doing face masks?”
Luke smiled a little bit wider. “We let Mel pick out a movie she’d like to see,”
“I can do that, just not face masks,”
“It’s an all or nothing package, bro,”
Calum offered Luke a very disgusted look. “Fuck that.” He hauled himself off the countertop to stand. “Have fun being a girl, Luke. Let me know how the gender reassignment surgery goes.” Luke bit his tongue to not have a witty comeback filled with several choice words.
“Lil’ Sanchez!” Michael called from the staircase. Melody almost fell from Luke’s arms to see Michael. “Heard you wanted the good kush!”
“Michael!” Eve drew out, ready to fight everyone. Luke and Calum constantly arguing, Calum being an asshole, and Michael teaching Melody words he shouldn’t be. Ashton is the only one she can stand.
“Sup dude!” Melody held out her fist and Michael bumped it softly. “Good stuff.”
“Which one do you want, kid?” Michael held up a grey tube he’d also stolen from Eve. The front of it read Clay Mask, but Michael couldn’t stand the scent of the paste. It was too late to give it back to Eve without her noticing. In his opposite hand, he showed off a round tube of golden gel. “Good smelling stuff or Luke’s knockoffs?”
“Blue.” Melody stated.
“Good stuff or knockoffs?”
“Blue.”
They were in for a long argument against a three-year-old.
-
Calum was surprised he didn’t see Eve quickly, inside of her tattoo parlor. He thought the name of a shop would have something to do with Melody, but he’d about had a heart attack when the large neon sign read ‘FIVE SECONDS OF SUMMER TATTOOING’. He walked in immediately and requested the first appointment they had open.
“Man, our artists are busy for the night. You’ll have to find somewhere else,” Jason, Eve’s apprentice, said looking over the schedules for each artist. Except for Eve. All four basic artists were booked with large projects for the night drunks and fucked up stoners. Eve had space next to her name, though, twenty minutes into the future.
“Why can’t Eve do it?” Calum questioned, pointing over the counter at Eve’s full first name written in fancy cursive. He wasn’t used to seeing it written so perfectly. Usually, she writes ‘Eve’ with a light hand and lowercase letters.
“Evita? Man, she’s real good and doesn’t do most people.” Jason shook his head. He looked tired, tripping balls, or just done with Calum. “You have to get special approval from her. She doesn’t put up with anyone’s shit.”
“Ask her then,”
“What? Man, no. She won’t listen to me. How would I even ask?”
“Well, first you walk up to her and say ‘Eve, you’ve got a customer that’ll take your shitty tattoos and will pay fucking cash and a tip. Now tattoo him.’ It’s easy.”
“I think if I say that to her, I’ll be fired,”
Calum sighed and ran a hand through his dark curls. One caught on his ring and pulled like he’d done to Melody just hours early. He thought to himself how weird it was they had the same curls, hair color, and facial features. “Just get Eve.”
“I don’t-”
“-Do it and I’ll tip you.”
Jason turned around in the uncomfortable spinning chair and stood up. 5 Seconds Of Summer tattooing took over an old tattoo shop and a bar, erasing of all the alcohol and vomit stains on the floor and disposing of all barstools and tables. Eve put in a couple of couches in the front of the shop for people that waited, had a bathroom on both sides of the shop, and turned the bar portion into a piercing area. Calum looked around the teal walls at anatomic sketches and cartoon characters drawings. He was very impressed.
“Evita!” Jason screamed. Calum dropped a twenty on the desk.
“I get it,” Eve stammered loudly. “I’m Mexican! But you don’t have to constantly call me Evita like an asshole Jason!” Red burned her cheeks and ears at such anger. To Calum, Evita was triggering to Eve after four years of him calling her it. He was fully convinced she’d explode when her eyes landed on him. “You have blue on your face, dumbass.”
Calum wiped his face and noticed no residue on his finger. “Your daughter got Michael to put on blue shit,” Calum sighed. “Roped me into it too.” Michael, Ashton, Luke, and Melody watched two minutes of The Nightmare Before Christmas, disregarding February creeping upon them before Melody ran to Calum’s room and rasped on the wood. He asked her what she wanted, with his attitude faltering. Melody pointed to the blue cream on her face, and Calum reluctantly agreed with a groan and learned that he’s becoming wrapped around her finger.
“She’s your daughter too,” Eve said. “What do you want?”
“A tattoo,” Calum crossed his arms over his chest and smirked. “Feel like I’m due for one that’s not Crayola.”
“I’m busy,”
“No, you’re not,” Eve looked a little defeated. “We can go for drinks instead. Get drunk, fuck, and you’ll get pregnant and claim Luke’s kid is mine again.” Calum smirked harder than before. Eve resisted punching that smirk off his face.
“Come on!” Eve stammered again, dragging Calum to her office with walls of perfect drawings. “You need to fucking stop!” Eve said the moment she locked the door. Their relationship seemed loveless and dangling off the edge of a crumbling cliff. They’re covering anger at themselves with arguments. Eve’s angry Calum left four years before; Calum’s angry he left too. Their feelings are repressed, but unlike Calum, Eve wanted those feelings back and to know what it’s like to be loved.
“Stop what, Evita?”
“Don’t fucking call me that,” Eve hit her hand on the wooden door and a stinging pain shot down her arm. She didn’t stop. The brunette took all of her anger out on a hard door, tempting the bones in her hand. “You lost the right to call me that the day you left! You lost the right to call me that the day you came up with the thought that Melody is Luke’s daughter!” Eve turned to face Calum. Hot tears full of rage were beginning to gather. “If she was Luke’s daughter, why does she have dark hair? Curls? Why isn’t she pale?”
“You’re dark,” Calum snapped back. “You have curly hair.”
“Melody barely took after me! She took after you, you fucking asshole!” Eve wanted to hit Calum, take the rest of her burning rage out on him. She kept her hands to herself. “She’s supposed to be Melody Hood, not Sanchez. She’s supposed to be calling you Dad, not Uncle Calum! She looks just like your fucking sister, Calum! Stop denying her!”
“I’ll stop denying her the day you admit you fucked Luke.”
“I’ve never fucked Luke!”
“Everybody knows you did, Eve! Why else would you have kept your daughter a secret from me?”
“Because you fucking left,” Eve’s voice dropped low, scarily. She’s shorter than Calum by a foot, but he was scared he would get his ass beat. She could tear him to shreds; rip his confidence up one leg and down the other. “You left without a fucking word! Changed your phone number, abandoned any way we had to contact you!”
“I was doing what I needed to do!”
“Then why are you back? Why didn’t your dream go perfectly? Why aren’t you living happily in New York? Do you just want to torment me?”
“Everything failed, Eve! It’s not like I wanted to come back! I had nothing!”
“Then leave.”
“What?”
“If you didn’t want to be here, then leave. I’ll give you some fucking money. Get out, stay away from your daughter and this ‘Uncle Calum’ bullshit. Tell her that you’re her dad and I’m not the reason she’s never met him!”
“Eve-” Calum tried to say.
“Do you want to be here?”
“I . . . I don’t-”
“Yes or no. Decide right now. Do you want to be here?”
Calum swallowed his thick pride. “Yes.”
“Then man up and quit being everything you vowed you wouldn’t.”
“Get a DNA test.”
“What?” Eve looked down at her bruising hands, suddenly feeling the worst ache from them she’d felt in a long time.
“Get a DNA test. If it comes back that she’s mine, then I’ll be her dad. If I’m right, and she’s Luke’s, then shut your fucking mouth and quit being a bitch about everything. Deal?”
Eve squinted. “Go fuck yourself.”
-
Calum didn’t get a tattoo from Eve that night and took the first opening from a different artist in the same shop. Shay Ramsey, a regular that Eve tattoed a lot, walked into the parlor right after Eve finished cleaning her hands up and showed Eve a sketch she wanted. Eve studied the design and quickly fell in love with the way it had been originally sketched. She stayed up until dawn, tattooing a Medusa staring at a loaded bow pointing towards Shay’s neck. Underneath the bow were Medusa’s snakes with cracks and flowers sprouting from them.
Eve rang Ashton for a coffee and food run after the sun was fully up, explaining that she was working. Ashton pulled on joggers and a hoodie, put Melody in her car seat, and made the drive into town just for her.
“How’s it looking?” Shay asked, looking at the wall right in front of her. Medusa was split in half, which was the hardest part for Eve. Medusa didn’t have a nose bridge or a cupid's bow, to make room for a quote of Shay’s spine. ‘Daughters of the witches you couldn’t burn’ was tattooed in cursive, leading into the arrow.
“I think I’m going crazy, but a relaxed crazy. You know?”
“Makes sense,” Shay laughed a little bit, trying to not move her back from Eve’s needle. Eve only does large and time-consuming projects she knows will tip and sit well. “Miss your baby girl yet?”
“Man,” Eve laughed, turning to dip the needle in ink. “I do. She was with her uncles last night and they did the blue facemasks again.”
Shay laughed again. “You ‘gotta tell them not to do that again. How’s her arm?”
Eve rubbed the sleep from her eyes for a brief moment with the side of her arm. She just had to finish up shading Medusa, and she’d be finished. It would take forever, though. “Good. She’s getting out of the cast in a few weeks. She no longer feels comfortable feeding Norberty by herself.”
“How many animals does that child have now?”
Eve thought for a moment. “Two ferrets, a cat, a lizard, several fish, and she’s claiming Petunia, Michael’s dog, Ashton’s hedgehog, and Calum Hood.” Melody claims all of the animals, but she doesn’t take care of any of them. Though she’s three, so everyone lets her get away with it most of the time.
“Woah, wait. Calum Hood? He’s back?”
“Been here about a month. Spent all of his money, came back to live in the house and is a giant pain in my ass.” Eve shook her head. How dare he just leave her? She’s still not over four years of mourning and fear over raising their child by themselves.
“You two were perfect in high school. What happened?”
“I’m not even sure we liked each other in high school,” Eve wiped the sketch from Shay’s skin. The tattoo was progressing like a snail, but amazingly. “That’s a lie. He was the best thing in my life. Then, he gave me another Best Thing In My LIfe and he’s still sitting a close second.”
“You have to tell him that.”
“No thank you,” Eve watched the shop door open after Ashton unlocked it. “How about a break?” Shay nodded her head. Eve made her way towards Ashton and snatched the brown bag from his hands. “Did you get me food?” She slipped him some money for compensation. Eve grabbed a doughnut out of the bag. “Thank you so much.”
Just like Calum’s face, Ashton and Melody had faces stained with blue. Eve had to laugh a little bit. “Tell Uncle Luke to throw that stuff out, yeah?”
“No!” Melody shook her head. Ashton had thrown it away after he looked at the blue marks for a second time, depositing it in the location it was born from. Trash. “I had strawberries and ‘nanas.”
“You have strawberries and bananas?” Eve repeated back. She began feasting on her donut and sipping on frozen coffee. It tasted like perfection. “Did you save me any?”
Melody shook her head again, rustling her bed head. Ashton only slid a pair of jeans and a jacket on the little girl. Eve didn’t blame him for not dressing her up that much, that’s her job. “Uncle Cal made ‘em.”
“Calum made you strawberry banana pancakes? He hates those,”
“Yeah, but they were fucking good,” Ashton laughed. “Somehow, he knew they’re Melody’s favorite.”
Eve was very surprised.
-
Staring at the seemingly bored man standing in her bedroom doorway, Eve wondered if she should just kick him out. The thought of welcoming him inside of her bedroom made her feel warm and comfortable, she just wasn’t sure if it was the best idea. Calum hadn’t been in her bedroom at all, even when he showed back up and started taking care of Melody. He’d hold her until she slept, then Luke, the seemingly quietest person ever, would carry her up to her room.
It was personal, a barrier from the lives they used to love to the ones they’re entertaining now. Before escaping New Jersey, Calum snuck into Eve’s room, kissed her, and they laid together until she was well asleep. What eve doesn’t know about that night is that it took everything in Calum to leave her. He didn’t want to move hours away, but he had to. Calum remembers preparing to sneak back out and just watching her chest go up and down with shallow breaths. Everything in his body hurt.
After a few seconds of staring, Calum brushed his hair from his face. “We should go drinking tonight.”
“No,”
“Why?”
“I haven’t been drinking since before Melody was born,”
That didn’t stop Calum from convincing her into taking shots of tequila at a bar with their friends. Melody was staying at her grandparents for a few days. Eve could do whatever she wanted.
“Woah, slow down there Sparky!” Calum called, grabbing Eves shot out of her hands. “I think we should go home.”
“You’re just a party pooper,” Eve slurred, barely able to keep herself up. She slumped over a little bit, causing Calum to catch her. “See. I’m fine.”
While Eve isn’t the tallest person, she still manages to have long legs. On the few occasions, she’d get drunk at parties during teenage adolescence, and also go home to have sex all night with Calum, she’d learned how to not trip over her own feet and break her legs. After spraining her ankle walking from a party to Calum's house, she drilled herself to no longer trip over her feet like a newborn foal.
Calum was impressed she managed to keep that ability after several years of not drinking. Calum wrapped his arm around her for support and they stumbled towards the door, Calum getting in the way of where Eve was stepping.
“We should get tacos, Cally!”
A sharp pain overtook Calums' left side. Eve called Calum ‘Cally’ when they were teenagers. It was her favorite nickname for him because only she could call him that. On one occasion that Luke tried to call Calum ‘Cally’, Luke almost ended up with a shiner. Calum and Eve had nicknames for each other that only they could say.
“Yeah,” Calum whispered through a scratchy throat. “I don’t think there’s a place to get them.”
“Then let’s go home and make tacos!”
Calum rolled his eyes. “Fine,” he unlocked the car door and helped Eve inside. She smiled at him and blew him a kiss before he ran to the other side of the car. “Ready to go home?”
“Yes,” Eve smiled wider.
The ride was short for the pair. The bar was a while away from the house, but with a flirty Eve in the car with him, Calum drove over the speed limit before he did something he’d regret soon. Eve sobered up a little bit on the ride and began to remember some of her anger towards Calum. In all honesty, she wanted a kiss from him too.
“How was drinking?” Ashton asked. Eve gave him two thumbs up. “Sounds like you had fun.”
“I don’t even remember why I went drinking,” Eve laughed. Calum pulled her toward the kitchen. “Tacos!” Eve screamed, gathering the ingredients. She pulled meat from the fridge they’d cooked earlier in the night, along with tortillas, and everything you can imagine going on a taco.
“Wanna watch a movie downstairs while we eat?” Calum asked. Oddly, he didn’t want to separate from Eve. He wanted to stay with her, protect her, lay with her, and watch bad TV shows together. Calum misses how he and Eve used to be.
“We can watch it in my room.” Eve shrugged. She grabbed her plate of a soft taco packed inside of a splitting shell and lead Calum to her room.
Melody had left some toys behind, leaving them scattered on the floor. Eve shoved them toward Melody’s messy bed and set her plate on the side table. Calum felt uncomfortable walking into the room as if it were his own, sitting down on the bed like he used to. Eve always sat toward the end so she could see the TV better, but Calum always sat behind her. He laughed when she chose The Jonas Brothers.
“You still watch that?” Calum asked. He took a bite of his cold taco.
“Who doesn’t?”
“Me,”
“Well you’re stupid,” Eve said. She watched the show intently, taking bites of her food every so often. Calum didn’t watch TV, instead he watched Eve break down a wall he wished was never there and let him inside of her. She wasn’t mad at him, she wasn’t trying to pick a fight or argue with Calum. She just sat there, eating and watched a Disney show like her life depended on it. Until she fell back into teenage habits and scooted back to sit in Calum’s lap.
“Comfy?” Calum asked, offering up a small laugh. Eve rested her head on Calum’s shoulder, burying her face in the crook of his neck. He smelled like Old Spice and memories. “Are you going to lay like this for a while?”
“Obviously,”
“But I’m cold!”
“We are laying on a blanket, Calum, learn to use your head,” Eve sighed and tore away from her comfortable position to pull the blankets tucked corners out. First, she got underneath the blue duvet, then sat on Calum so he could be warm too. “Better?” Eve asked, returning to her position.
“Much.”
Calum wasn’t cold. He just wanted to get Eve off of him, but he didn’t know how to say it. He wants Eve off his body so he didn’t feel the fire of her skin touching his, the sight of her small body laid on top of him, or the smell of orchid shampoo filling his nostrils. Calum wanted to forget everything; Melody, coming back to New Jersey, Eve, how he still loves Eve with all of his heart.
“Calum?” Eve broke Calum’s concentration on the window behind the TV. Calum looked down at her and wanted to keep her body in that position forever. “You okay?”
Calum cleared his throat. No. He’s not okay. He’s falling even further for someone he never got over. “Yeah. You?”
Eve looked up. Calum couldn’t help but gape at Eve. “Kiss?” Eve tilted her head back for a kiss. Just like when they were teenagers. Calum hesitated for just a moment. “W-wait. I’m sorry. Just-” Eve hid her face in her hands. Embarrassment flooded her body.
She’d forgotten about everything. Calum seemed to do that to her. She forgot about how she’s supposed to be mad at him, about how he left without saying anything. Calum giggled and reached for her hands.
“Evita,” Calum smiled. It was funny to him - her red cheeks and ears were magnificent.
Eve declined his laughter. “Don’t call me that.”
“Why? It’s your name. Evita Ma-”
“No!” Eve cries. “Stop it!”
“Why do you hate it so much? You used to love being called Evita,”
Eve looked at Calum. Calum thought she was going to fall over and cry. “You used to call me Evita. Only you!”
“And?”
“You call me Eve now,” Eve brushed her hair away from her face. The messy bun she’d tried to do during the car ride was falling in small strands. She felt like she couldn’t see. “Just Eve. I only let you call me Evita, and then-”
“-And then I left and you felt that it was tied to me.”
Eve nodded her head. “Michael tried to joke around and call me Evita one day and I started to cry. Could've been pregnancy hormones or something, but you came back and now it’s like it’s all in the past and-”
“Eve, shh, calm down,” Calum grabbed Eve’s hands before she had a chance to hurt something. Her fists clenched hard and he was forced to undo them. “Listen. I’m here right now, and I’m not going to leave. No matter how much I say I just want to leave, I’m not going to leave. I’m here for you, for Melody, for . . . for everyone.”
“Everyone?”
“Of course.” Calum didn’t realize how tense Eve was until he said that. Her body relaxed as if she’d finished working out or something. She just fell into him and he felt well. “How are you feeling?”
Eve looked up at Calum. “Kiss?”
Calum barely pressed his lips to Eve’s, giving her what both of them wanted. His lips began to feel numb, ripped apart by electricity he only felt with Eve. Neither of them let go. Eve snaked her hand around to the back of Calum’s neck, deepening their kiss. Calum slid his cold hand up the back of Eve’s hoodie. She shivered.
“Your hands are very cold,” Eve whispered, crumbling away from Calum’s lips. Calum nodded his head. January has made their entire lives freezing. “So are mine.” Eve clapped her hands on an area of skin Calum’s collar revealed.
“Yes they are, Eve,” said Calum. They both giggled a little bit. Eve watched Calum, but Calum watched her lips. She bit down on her bottom, kiss-ridden lip. Calum couldn’t stop watching. Eve kissed him again.
Calum loved the feeling of Eve’s lips on his, Eve sitting on top of him in a non-sexual manner - but let’s be real he’d love it either way. They weren’t angry at each other, just happy and acting like teenagers they used to be. Calum’s heart broke a little bit, though, realizing that Eve wouldn’t remember a single thing when she’d wake up the next morning.
She’d just remember drinking.
-
“I’m going to pick up Melody, anybody need anything?” Eve questioned, walking through the kitchen to grab her car keys. She plucks them off the hook and wraps her lanyard around her finger.
“It’s snowing, Eve,” said Ashton. “You’re not going anywhere.”
“You’re so overprotective,” Eve groaned. “I have to pick my daughter up from her grandmothers’ house. Does anybody need anything?”
“You’re not going,”
“Yes I am, Ashton. Would you like anything while I am out?”
“I’ll go with her,” Calum sighed, reaching for a jacket. He pulled it over his head and let the hood settle on top of his curls. “Might as well have somebody else with you. Right?”
“I guess,” Eve snapped. “Let’s go or we’ll be late.”
The cold wind hit them like a ton of bricks. Eve was suddenly well aware of how underdressed she was, and how she should buy a snowsuit. She got into her silver SUV and turned the heat on immediately. It also blasted cold air.
“Cold?” Calum asked with a small chuckle. He pulled his jacket back off, leaving him in just a long-sleeved shirt. “Here,” He said. Eve took his hoodie and slipped it on. It smelled like heaven and even while he only wore it for just a small period, it was warm.
Eve took it off before entering her moms' house, though. She gave it back to Calum so her mother didn’t question why the Hood emblem is on her breast. The short girl became cold and wanted it back.
“Mel!” Eve called before hearing the sound of Melody stumbling down the stairs. “Don’t break another bone!” Melody ran right up to Eve and hugged her legs tightly. “Ready?”
Melody shook her head. “No.”
“Why?”
“It’s cold.”
“Want my jacket, kid?” Calum asked. Melody nodded her head, and for a second time, Calum peeled it off his body. “Arms up.” Melody put her arms to the sky and Calum helped her put it on. It pooled at her feet.
“I swear if she breaks another bone-” Eve started.
“-She’s not going to break another bone, Eve,” Calum laughed. “I can just carry her- see.” He lifted Melody off the floor and onto his hip. “Comfy, kid?” Melody nodded her head. Calum laughed again.
Catalina Sanchez, Eve’s mom, walked into the kitchen and started to swoon. She looked different from the last time Calum had seen her; black hair turned grey, wrinkles embedded themselves in her forehead and underneath her eyes, and she seemed to have lost a lot of weight. “Calum!” She called, opening her arms up bringing him into a hug. “I heard you were back from this little munchkin,” Catalina poked Melody’s belly.
“Sure am, Mom,” Calum replied.
Catalina is the mom of every person she comes in contact with. All of Eve’s friends, all of her sister Emerson’s friends. Ashton, Calum, Michael, and Luke were always allowed around her house to relax, live, eat, or for emotional support. Everyone calls her Mom, besides her grandchild.
“How long? Are you leaving again? Please tell me you aren’t leaving again Mister Calum H-”
“I’m not planning on leaving again, don’t worry,”
“Good. This little girl is happy to have you. She talked about you for about two days straight,”
Calum felt a pang of happiness in his heart. Did Melody talk about him? Bragged about Calum? Calum had never had anything like that before. He smiled wider than he could imagine.
Catalina turned to her daughter. “Now, Eve, I swear you need to get Melody’s speech impediment figured out-”
Eve groaned. “She doesn’t have a speech impediment, mom, she’s just being a kid.”
“Are you sure? She can’t say, Ashton. Melody say-”
“Mom!” said Eve. “Would you stop? Please? My daughter is perfectly fine and is just barely three!”
Catalina pointed her finger sternly at Eve. “Don’t talk to me that way, young lady. If she still can’t say Ashton when she turns four, then she has a speech impediment.” Eve rolled her eyes. “Calum, how about you go warm up the car? I need to talk to my daughter.”
Calum took the cue to go away and headed out the back door. “How was your stay at grandmas?”
“Good!” Melody squealed. “We had chicken!”
“Chicken? No way!”
Calum opened the door of the SUV but stopped when he noticed all the snow accumulating. There was no way they’d get home safely with all the snow. He cursed, but quietly so Melody wouldn’t hear him.
“‘s wrong?” Melody asked. She looked around, trying to figure out the problem Calum was having. If Calum set her down on the ground, snow would reach above her ankles, almost to her knees. The snow wasn’t the only thing falling from the sky, but also hail the size of golf balls and painful sleet.
Calum’s head was turning into the clouds above him. There’s no way that this is happening to him. No way! “We’re going to have to stay here, Kid.”
“Sleepover!” Melody squealed.
-
Calum almost had a heart attack. Eve’s bed seemed to be more comfortable than he could remember, but when she walked from the hallway, into her old bedroom, he couldn’t believe the outfit she’d worn. A large shirt - that used to be his - and he wasn’t sure if there was anything underneath. He glanced away, staring at the floor instead of the beautiful princess closing the bedroom door.
“Are you sure you’re comfortable with this? I can go to sleep on the couch if you’re not.” Calum said with a bit of pitch in his voice. He looked at the window he’d crawled out of the night he left New Jersey. He felt like shit.
“It’s fine,” Eve shrugged. After she moved in with Luke, Ashton, and Michael, she changed almost nothing about her old room. The dresser still sat crooked near the closet door, a small TV was still sitting on top of it, but Calum wasn’t sure if it’d work. Eve sat down on the bed next to Calum. “Are you okay with it?”
“Yeah,” Calum said. He cleared his throat. “Of course. Why wouldn’t I?”
“Because . . . okay, that’s it, I’m going to sleep on the couch.”
Calum grabbed Eve’s arm before she could stand up from the bed and pulled her close to him. “I’m fine, okay? I promise. It’s like when we were younger and-”
“-We fucked practically every night.”
“Well, not exactly,” Calum chuckled. He offered a small smile to Eve, which she took with an eye roll. “When all of us would sleepover. Luke would always sleep on the floor with Michael and Ashton, and after they were asleep I’d crawl up to bed with you.”
“They had no clue about us for like . . .”
“Four months,” Calum said. Eve smiled. She couldn’t remember that small detail, but Calum could. She wondered how much more he could remember about their relationship. “Remember Ashton screaming after the basketball game?”
Eve hid her blushing face with her hands. Giggles slipped through her fingers. “I remember that. You busted open your lip or something and whined every time I put the cleaner on it. I had to kiss you like every five seconds and-”
“And Ashton walked in and screamed at the top of his lungs,”
Eve laughed even harder. “You threatened to tie him down and fill his lungs with orange soda.”
“I had to make sure he wouldn’t tell anybody!”
Eve brushed her long hair from her face and looked at him. Her ears and cheeks were red, but not like a few days before. “He still told Michael two minutes later.”
“How was I to know that he had his phone on him, Eve!”
“Remember when Luke found out? He walked straight here and told my mom-”
“-And she said ‘You’re late’!”
They both tumbled backward from laughter. Luke had walked straight from his house a few blocks away just to tell Catalina, but Catalina already knew. She felt bad for saying that, so she made him his favorite meal. Luke ate it quickly, thanked her, and went to Calum’s mom to spoil the news for her.
“Man, I miss being a teenager,” Eve sighed. She was nineteen when Melody was born. Her life went from studying modern art to being a badass mom with tattoos and ignoring everyone's opinions about her life. “No responsibilities. Get to live life. Don’t have to worry about which Disney movie to watch next.”
“Since when is it movies? We watched The Jonas Brothers, Eve,”
“We did what?!” Eve yelled. “The other day we watched The Jonas Brothers? Are you sure you just didn’t see the TV that well and we were-”
“Eve, the TV is right in front of your bed. I know which show we were watching,”
Eve looked down and began playing with her fingers. Calum was in her room? They watched her guilty pleasure together, and Calum didn’t complain until some stupid show was played? “What else happened?”
Calum didn’t want to reply. He didn’t want Eve to know about them kissing, or how she confessed why she hates Evita, or how he said he wasn’t going anywhere. He wanted to leave her hanging just a little while he came to terms with Melody. It was taking longer than it should’ve and he was even mad at himself. “Nothing important.”
“You sure?”
Calum pretended to think. “100-percent.”
“Really?” Eve asked. “I may have forgotten most of the night but I remember one thing.”
Calum’s heart began beating fast. He didn’t know what she remembered, and he was suddenly worried. He didn’t want Eve’s hopes up, and all of a sudden he had to dip because he can’t take the idea of having a child. “What do you remember?”
Eve scooted closer to Calum. “Your hands were really cold.”
Calum laughed. “They were.” Eve and Calum locked eyes. “Do you remember anything else?”
Eve shook her head. “That’s what alcohol does to me.”
“Are you sure you don’t remember anything else?” Suddenly, Calum was desperate to kiss Eve again. He missed the electricity flowing through his body. But eve shook her head. She didn’t remember the kiss a single bit. Calum wanted to remind her. “Nothing else?”
“Why? What happened?”
Calum’s eyes flicked to Eve’s lips. Just a peck, a small brush, or even a kiss on the cheek. He needed some sort of contact. “Can’t tell you.” Calum locked eyes with Eve for just a moment, then looked away at something else. The closet door seemed like the perfect place to look, but it also messed with his head.
A few times that Calum would stay the night with Eve, Luke or Ashton would show up unannounced and Calum would have to hide, half-dressed, in Eve’s tiny closet. Even worse were times that they tried to stay for a while and Eve had to drag them upstairs to play video games just so Calum could pretend he just showed up.
Eve followed Calum’s eyes to the closet door. “Want something else to wear?”
“Huh?” Calum looked down at his jeans. “Oh, uh, no?”
“I still have your clothes, Cal, I’m not offering you a frilly dress. I’m offering you something comfortable to sleep in.”
“Sure,” Calum sighed. Eve stood up to dig through her dresser drawers. Most of the clothes Calum had left without, she kept at the new house, rather than the one she lived in once before. A lot of times, they made great maternity clothes.
“Here,” Eve said, continuing to dig through her drawers. She’d expected she left more clothes, but in reality, she left almost none of Calum’s. Calum took the grey joggers out of her hands. They were tied for her tiny waist. He pulled the knot apart. “I don’t think I have any shirts except-” Eve looked down at the shirt she’d been wearing. “Let me look in my closet.”
But the closet was almost bare. Just a few shirts that Eve bought while pregnant, that fit so large they were oversized with an eight-pound baby in her stomach. She’d never choose to sleep in those, however. They had been itchy and uncomfortable. Imagine sleeping in something like that.
“I don’t have a shirt,” Eve shrugged. “Sucks to be you.”
Calum rolled his eyes. “I have my shirt, and my jacket, brat. I think I can suffice.”
Eve shrugged again, but dramatically. “No, I don’t think you will. You should take it off.”
“Is Evita Sanchez telling me to take off my shirt?” Calum laughed. Maybe she did remember the kiss and wanted it to happen again as much as he did.
“You’ll never know,” Eve laughed and stuck her tongue out just a little bit. She looked just like her eighteen-year-old self when she did that. Calum was swooning again. She scrunched her nose up a bit and Calum had to laugh.
“Truth or dare?”
“Truth,”
“What’s underneath that shirt?”
“Dare,”
“Take off that shirt.”
“What makes you think you get to see what’s underneath my shirt, Calum Hood?” Eve crossed her arms. Normally, she’d just tell him, as she’d do with the guys. But normally, she’s wearing actual clothes instead of just panties.
Calum bit his lip and drug his eyes from the floor to her long, tan legs, up to her hips, which happened to be covered by the shirt. His eyes continued trailing up her body, noticing an inconsistency with what she normally wears. “You’re a tease.”
Eve rolled her eyes dramatically. “I am not a tease.”
“You’re not a tease?” Calum stood up from Eve’s bed. “Not a single bit?” He pressed his body to hers, his hands dragging up the back of her bare legs. Eve shivered. “Are my hands cold?”
The drunken night started coming back; they made out on her bed, and she enjoyed it. She was happy to be kissing her high school boyfriend again and feeling his hands on her body. “Maybe.” Eve sputtered out.
Calum seductively smirked. “Are you okay, Evita?”
“I’m fine,” Eve lied. “Your hands are just cold.”
Calum let go on Eve, setting backward to grab the joggers off the bed. “Maybe we should just go to sleep, then. I can warm up, then.” He walked out of the room to change in the bathroom. Eve’s body slumped against the closet door, and she slid until she was sitting on the floor.
She’s fucking up her life anymore, but she doesn’t care.
-
Only a few days after the encounter with Calum at Catalina’s house, Eve woke up to an empty bed, and an empty room. Normally, Melody crawls into bed with Eve or at least wakes Eve up in the morning, but Eve was surprised and concerned when the room was empty. She shot up, looking at the time when it hit her that Melody wasn’t with her. Just barely dawn, and her baby isn’t with her.
Quickly, she ran out of her room, to Luke’s right next door, then to Michael’s on the opposite side. She wasn’t with either of them or Ashton. Melody and Ashton have a bond for the love of sleep and making loud noises. But all three of her roommates were asleep. There was one place she hadn’t checked yet; Calum’s room.
She knew in her heart that the possibility that Melody was in Calum's room was low, especially since Calum sleeps late, and Melody wakes up early. Calum probably went to sleep just not long ago, passing out after a video game binge. Reluctantly, she pushed his door open just an inch.
The room was a disaster with clothes strewn everywhere, and blankets scattered in odd directions. However, Melody was there. Asleep on Calum’s bare chest, snoring just a bit. Eve wanted to capture the moment and relish in the captivating sight she was looking at. Like father like daughter, asleep with The Little Mermaid playing in the background, surrounded by thousands of blankets and pillows.
Eve smiled and walked back to her bedroom.
-
Melody jabbed her finger into Eve’s throat. “What’s that say?”
“It says angel,” Eve replied for the thousandth time.
“What’s that one?” Melody pointed to both of Eve’s shoulders.
“That one is the sun, and that one is the moon,” Eve said.
“Why?”
“Because I liked it,”
“Why?”
“Because you are the sun and the moon?”
“Why?”
“Why don’t you go bug Uncle Calum about his tattoos?”
“Yours is cooler.” Melody traced the crescent moon and the clouds it covered. “Pretty,” Melody switched to the sun on Eve’s right shoulder. “I get one?”
“You’re too young, Mel,” Eve reached for markers Melody left on the coffee table. “You want a washable one?” Melody nodded her head quickly and tore off her shirt. “What do you want?”
“That,” Melody pointed to snakehead just peaking above Eve’s sports bra, in between her boobs. “Pwease?” Eve reluctantly nodded her head and pulled the cap off the black marker.
Her snake is intricate, with geometric patterns along its back and realistic shading. Eve sketched out a simple cartoon snake on Melody’s sternum. Melody didn’t stop smiling until Eve pulled the marker off her skin.
“More? Pwease?”
“No,” Eve laughed, grabbing Melody’s arms to sit her up fully. “You don’t need to be covered in ink yet.” Melody giggled her normal giggle and stared down at her body. “Do you like it?”
“Just like yours!” She waved her cast toward her mom’s chest. “Show them?”
“You want to show your Uncles?” Eve could barely ask the question before Melody bolted toward the kitchen, almost falling on her face. She has her fathers’ athletic abilities, even just at three. Eve followed behind, but slower. “Melody has something to show you,” Eve said, entering the kitchen of men.
They looked up from their odd positions, eating different types of breakfast, not surprised that Melody is running around barely clothed again. In the 5 Seconds Of Summer household, wearing shirts is more uncommon than being practically naked. It’s an unwritten rule in being confident with your body.
Calum set down his cereal bowl on top of a notebook. Eve wanted to know what he was writing, and why it had so many scribbles. “What is it, Kid?” He looked past the snake drawn on her chest.
“Look!” Melody pointed at the snake, and the group of grown men called ‘Wow’ and ‘No way is that real?’
Calum pushed away his notebook and crouched to Melody’s level to look at the snake closer. “Is this real? I’ll kick your butt if you got a tattoo!” Melody giggled at him. “I’m serious! Is it real?”
“No!” Melody giggled. “Mommy’s ta’too!”
“It’s mommy's tattoo!?” Ashton exclaimed, joining Calum. “Are you sure? I’ve never seen this on her.”
“Yeah, Eve, why don’t you show us your tattoo,” Calum chuckled. His brown eyes meet with her silvers and she had to break away. “Don’t be a party pooper, Evita.” Calum stood up and walked to Eve so he could press his finger to the snakes head. “I wanna’ see it.”
“Yeah, man, I’ve never seen it,” Luke laughed. He shoved a piece of bacon in his mouth, ignoring painful glares Eve sends him. “Eve,” Luke drags out loudly. “We wanna see!”
“I will fight every single one of you, don’t test me,” Eve answered. She looked around Calum and pointed at his notebook. “I’ll show you the tattoo if you tell me what you’re writing.”
Calum looked down, then up, toward his notebook, back at Eve, at Melody, then at his hands. It was a hard decision. “Suck my dick, Sanchez,” Eve winked at Calum. Calum winked back. “Boys, I guess we won't get to see the tattoo.”
“I seen it!” Melody yells. She reaches up the drag down the top of Eve’s sports bra. Eve barely caught the fabric before she flashed a room full of guys. “Show ‘em!”
“No, Mel,” Eve giggled. “They don’t get to see it.”
“Fine,” Melody huffed and stomped her little butt back to the TV. Eve looked around the corner to make sure she safely made it to the couch.
“So what is in your notebook?” Eve asked Calum, passing him. Luke tore the bowl away from the paper and hid the notebook underneath his shirt. “All of you are going to hide it from me, aren’t you?”
They all collectively nodded their heads. “It’s personal, Eve,” Calum said, grabbing for his notebook. “You can know when it’s finished. Otherwise-”
“At least tell me what it’s about. Please?” Eve covered her chest with both of her arms. “I’ll show you the tattoos. All of them.”
“Really?”
“No,” Eve reached for the rough notebook again. “Please just let me see it!”
Calum held it above his head, where she couldn’t reach. “No way. You can know when it’s finished!”
“Fine,” Eve snapped. “Next time you let my kid lay with you, tell me first, please.”
Calum nodded his head. “Now show the tattoo or leave, Evita.”
Eve turned on her heel and headed toward her daughter.
-
Calum recognized the sound of Eve’s knock. He waltzed to the door, opened it, and stared eye to eye with Eve. He moved his eyebrows up and down. Eve wasn’t amused.
“Yes, Evita?” Calum asked. Eve barely got a peek into his room, looking around at the torn up sheets of paper littering his bed and floor. The notebook he’d carried like a baby the past few days were seemingly getting smaller and smaller. Eve just wanted to know what he was doing with it - but he won’t tell her.
“It’s time to cuddle,” Eve ducked underneath Calum’s arm and walked into his room like any other day. She brushed the ripped paper off the bed and pulled the most recently-tucked-in blanket off his mattress and settled underneath it.
“Well hello to you too,” Calum let the door latch before pouncing onto the mattress. He straddled Eve’s body with his legs. “Guess whos’ on top?”
“Get off of me playboy,” Eve laughed. The small girl had to use all of her might to push Calum’s body off of hers.
Calum landed flat on his back next to her. “Look who’s sneaking into whos room now, huh?”
Eve poked Calum’s side. He flinched a little bit. “If there wasn’t a sleeping three-year-old in my room, you’d probably sneak into mine too.”
“Never. Absolutely never.” Calum smiles at Eve, and Eve smiles right back at him. “If I show you what’s in my notebook will you show me the snake tattoo?” Eve let out a loud bellow.
“Good try, Hood,” Eve pulled the hair tie from her long, dark braid and her mane fell in loose curls on Calum’s bed. To Calum, she looked beautiful whether or not she was showing the tattoo. “You’ll never ever get to see it.”
“Damn,” Calum swears with a snap of his fingers. “How many tattoos do you have?”
“As I said, too many,” Eve smiles wide, remembering the days she got most of her tattoos. After Calum left, Eve couldn’t get a tattoo until after Melody was born, and that’s when she elected Melody’s footprint to be right behind her ear. After a couple of months, though, she continued the trail down her back in the tattoo Melody is most fascinated with.
Eve got a snake tattooed between her boobs on a dare. Her, Ashton, and Michael were out being stupid late one night, so they started playing the dumb game. It took a couple of rounds to get Eve convinced into a tattoo, but she showed up to Addictions Tattoo Shop. She ended up buying that shop, renamed it, and painted it to her desire. Catalina almost killed her.
“Explain some of them to me,” whispered Calum. He glanced at her. “Honestly. Explain some of them to me.”
“Well I obviously have Mel’s feet, and-”
“-No,” Calum shook his head a little bit. “I express myself through music, you express yourself through art. Explain to me some of them people can’t see.”
“On my rib, I have ‘still breathing’ tattooed with a semicolon. Does that count?”
“Kind of,” Calum turned fully to tug up Eve’s shirt. He forgot her habit of wearing only underwear underneath. He just wanted to see the ink embedded in her skin and it’s a whimsical dance around her body. Just above her hip bone, Calum traced a large lotus flower with paint splatters curling toward the inside of her thigh and around to her back. Eve giggled a little bit. “What does this one mean?”
“I got bored and wanted to try a new technique. Turned out pretty good, right?”
Calum continued to trace, along to tattoos scattered around her stomach. “It did.” Eve was right, she has ‘still breathing;’ tattooed on her left rib in cursive, but a dinosaur on a skateboard smoking a cigarette on the opposite rib. He traced that tattoo and Eve shivered. His hands always seemed to be cold. “What’s this one?” Eve was about to answer when he tore her shirt up a little bit more, revealing moon phases and tiny stars underneath her breasts, curving with the way her body was built. “How’d you come up with this one?”
“My mom was always told me to look at the moon every night, and I’d find comfort in everything,”
“Deep,” Calum tug her shirt up a little more, expecting that Eve would try to fight him about being a pervert. She didn’t, though, thus Calum pushed it up to her armpits and admired Eve’s body. “Nice tattoos.”
“Right?”
Her torso curved perfectly for her liking, and she still had some meat on her bones. Eve was seemingly skinny, but healthy, and like she wouldn’t eat a salad to impress a guy. She didn’t have an overly large chest, the perfect size for Calum to like. During their teenage years, Eve was uncomfortable with Calum seeing her body all the time. She’d hide from him and wear overly large clothes because she was uncomfortable.
Calum pressed a kiss to the bottom of her sternum, right underneath her rips, on the warm, ticklish skin. He pressed the area right above it, then until the shirt was bunched up. He kissed the front of Eve’s neck and on the tattoo that said ‘angel’ in a fancy font. Behind her ear, Calum smirked when she let out a breathy capture of his name.
“You should get more tattoos like that,” Calum stated, tracing his finger around the snakes coiled tail. He didn’t let his finger stop on the tip, but drug it down her body to the waistband of her panties and over to the lotus flower on her hip. “I like them.” He rubbed his finger into her hip bones, digging down just a little bit. “Do you like them?”
“They’re cool,” Eve replied. She grabbed his shoulders to pull his body into hers. She felt his shirt press into her bare torso, and more. Feeling overly nervous, Eve pressed her lips to Calum’s. Something she’s wanted for so long, to remember it for days to come. Calum rubbed Eve’s jaw with his thumb, sneaking his fingers into her curls right behind her ear. “Wait - wait, we can’t.” Eve pulled away from Calum, wiggled to remove her body from underneath his and to pull down her shirt again.
“Wh-” Calum tried to ask.
“We can’t, Calum,” Eve covered her eyes with her fingers and dug her nails into her hair. She wanted Calum back more than she ever had. Calum was the love of her life, her first real boyfriend, the father of her child. If anything were to happen, they’d complicate everything, in Eve’s head. They’d hurt Melody, and she’d get mad about being deceived for over a month about ‘Uncle Calum’. “We’ll fuck everything up, and-”
“Eve-”
Eve stumbled to his door. She turned back to look at him. She loves Calum. Her heart hurt when he left, and when he came back. She wasn’t angry that he was back, but he was angry that he left without saying anything. Eve wants to hate him, to forget about Calum all together, leave behind a life she always wanted.
“Eve!” Calum called when Eve reached for the doorknob. She wasn’t thinking with her head, just what she thought everyone was wanting.
“I . . . I think I need to move somewhere with just Melody . . . no one else.” Then she left his room and locked herself inside her own.
-
“Where’s Eve?” Calum pushed, running into the soundproof room in the basement. He didn’t see her at all, not even when he walked into her bedroom. He could find Melody in the room with Ashton, Michael, and Luke, holding a tiny tambourine, but he couldn’t find her mother. “Have you guys seen Eve? At all?”
“No, what’s up?” asked Luke. He pulled his guitar off his body and placed it on the rack.
“I need to find Eve. Something stupid happened last night and-”
“Oh God, please tell me she’s not pregnant again,” Michael jokes, pointing at Calum’s dick. “Learn to keep that in your pants, please. We need exactly one Melody.” Calum let his arms fall to his sides. He couldn’t even joke around with his friends. He needed to find Eve! “Cal, are you okay?”
“I have to find Eve!” Calum screamed. Desperation filled his tone and strangled everyone around him. Quickly, they all figured out how badly Calum needed to find Eve. “Have you seen her?”
“I . . . I think she’d in the workout room. Have you checked there?”
Calum takes a deep breath. That’s the only area around their property he hasn’t checked. His long legs took him up the stairs, out the back door, and down the stone pathway to a large shed full of equipment. Loud music filled his ears. The music he wouldn’t have expected - Drag Me Down by One Direction. It was obvious that Eve was there.
He knocked once, but to no avail, he didn’t get a reply. She’s distracted. She’s working out, not waiting for knocks on the door and men professing their love to her. Calum opens the door and spots her in the far corner doing yoga.
One Direction and yoga. That’s Eve for you.
Her eyes look in the mirror, reflecting the open door. She dropped to the mat beneath her and stood up. “Get out.” Calum was surprised she wasn’t stern, but rather trying to convince herself that she wanted Calum away. “Get out!”
“You have to stay, Eve,”
“Good to know,” Eve picked a jacket off the floor and pulled it over her sports bra. She looked up at him through her eyelashes. “Your opinion doesn’t matter. I’ll do what’s best for me and my daughter.”
“But it’s not what’s best for Melody!” Calum bit down on his tongue. It was coming. He knew what was coming; a broken voice and shaky hands. A bolt of electricity shot through him. “She needs to be here- with her mom, her dad, and all three of her uncles.”
Eve was surprised, taken aback, concerned at what Calum had said. Her voice went low. “What?”
“Please, Eve,” Calum wanted to get on his knees and beg. After Eve left his room, he sat up for hours, thinking about Melody and Eve, how much he wanted them around. He came to terms with Melody - a very scary thing - and finally stopped denying it. Calum Thomas Hood has a beautiful daughter with brown eyes and curly dark hair, named Melody. “Please don’t take my daughter from me. Melody means everything to me, and I can’t . . . I can’t let either of you leave.”
“This isn’t going to work, Calum.” Eve crossed her arms. She didn’t want to believe what he was saying. “You can’t just use her as an excuse when you want me to do something! You can’t use my daughter as a pawn!”
“I’m . . . I’m not, Eve,” hot tears began to fall down Calum’s cheeks. He was so passionate, wanting Melody and Eve to stay, keeping his daughter close, and coming to terms with everything he didn’t want to. “Melody means more than everything combined. I want my daughter! You can’t just move out because of me! If anything, I’ll move out - find somewhere else to live and leave both of you alone. I’ll visit Melody, I’ll make a complete effort to be the dad I should have been for so many years!”
“I think that’s passed, Calum,” Eve knocked her shoulder against Calum when she walked into the cold February air. Calum watched her walk away, down the stone path with all of their handprints stuck into rocks and colored with spray paint. She ignored his pleads for her to listen. Calum wants to change her mind, for her to stay. But Eve has to decide what she needs.
Calum walked slowly back to the soundproof room. He broke the seal of sound, ripping open the door. He didn’t close it behind him. His best friends were playing a song for his daughter - one that they called Airplanes, that Calum had written. To him, it didn’t sound weird without his bass or singing, but to everyone else, they were uncomfortable. Calum flicked off the amps Michael and Luke were connected to, cutting off all the sound except Ashton.
“What the fuck?” Michael screamed, throwing his hands in the air. “Do you have a death wish or something?”
“Shove off,” Calum muttered, searching for his guitar. He picked it by the neck and carried it to Melody. He sat with his legs crisscrossed, right in front of her. “Mel,”
“Ya?” Melody replied with a large smile on her face.
“I wrote you a song. Do you want to hear it?”
Melody nodded her head quickly. “Duh!”
Calum wrote the song for all of them. For Luke’s carefree voice, Michael’s perfect guitar strums, Ashton’s drumming, and Calum’s bass. Yeah, they did alternative parts where Michael or Calum sang, and Luke just played guitar and so on, but those were Calum’s favorite parts. He couldn’t take it; Calum planned on singing for Melody as a present when the song was furnished, cleaned up, and memorized properly. He knew all of the singing parts, all of the guitar's parts. He could do it by himself.
He started strumming. Without Ashton’s drumming, it was bizarre. He kept strumming. “I don’t even like you, why’d you want to go and make me feel this way?” He scrunched his nose up and leaned close to Melody so she knew he was joking. Melody giggled in reply. “I don’t understand what’s happened, I keep saying things I never say.”
Luke, Michael, and Ashton were surprised. When they were puny highschoolers, playing talent shows and basement concerts, Calum never wanted to perform by himself. Even with just their family surrounding them, he wouldn’t sing by himself. On one occasion, Eve got him to sing a little bit of a song she liked, but he quit after stumbling over the lyrics. Singing by himself isn’t his thing, but he can’t express everything with everyone else.
“I can feel you watching even when you’re nowhere to be seen, I can feel you touching even when you’re far away from me,” Calum had to smile wide when Melody poked the tip of his nose in response. “Tell me where you’re hiding your voodoo doll, ‘cause I can’t control myself. I don’t want to stay, I wanna’ run away, but I’m trapped under your spell.”
Calum slowed down his strumming and pointed to the areas he described. “And it hurts in my head and my heart and my chest, and I’m having trouble catching my breath.” Melody replicated Calum’s movements until he picked up strumming again. “Won’t you please stop loving me to death?”
“No!” Melody squeaked.
Calum felt more love for his daughter. “I don’t even see my friends no more, ‘cause I keep hanging out with you. I don’t know how you kept me up all night, or how I got this tattoo,” Calum held out his right wrist, with a pocket watch sitting in a bed of flowers tattooed from the night he argued with Eve. He told the artist to choose a random time for the clock hands, and he ended up with the exact time Melody was born forever on his body. “I can feel you watching, even when you’re nowhere to be seen. I can feel you touching even when you’re far away from me. Tell me where you’re hiding your voodoo doll, ‘cause I can’t control myself,” Melody stared in awe at Calum. “I don’t wanna stay, I wanna’ run away, but I’m trapped under your spell, and it hurts in my head and my heart and my chest,”
Melody did the same moves as Calum; pointing at her right temple, right above her left breast, and on her sternum. She didn’t dare take her eyes off of Calum, though.
“And I’m having trouble catching my breath, won’t you please stop loving me to death?” Again, Melody told him no. “Every time I see you, suddenly my heart begins to race, every time I leave, I don’t know why my heart begins to break.” Melody poked Calum’s nose again, so he’d smile. “Tell me where you’re hiding your voodoo doll, ‘cause I can’t control myself, I don’t wanna stay, I wanna’ run away, but I’m trapped under your spell. And it hurts in my head and my heart and my chest, and I’m having trouble catching my breath. Won’t you please stop loving me to death?”
“Never,” Melody smiled. Calum finished the last cords and placed the guitar on the floor next to him. Melody crawled into his lap so she could wrap her arms around his neck in a hug. His large hands patted her small back. “T’ank you!”
“Of course,” Calum patted her back again. All of his friends were amazed at what he’d done. What he didn’t know was Eve had walked down to the music room to tell everyone to close the door, and videoed the entire song. Especially capturing a photo of the two hugging at the end. “Melody, what if I told you I was your daddy?”
Luke’s eyes became wider than saucers; Michael’s mouth dropped to the floor; Ashton dropped his drumsticks from their constant twirls. Eve, standing just outside of the room, covered her mouth with her sleeve. She was beginning to cry.
“Daddy?” Melody asked, letting go and cocking her head. “You’re my daddy?”
Calum nodded his head. His eyes were beginning to become glossy. “I’m your daddy. And those weirdos staring at us - they’re still you’re uncles.”
“I call you daddy?”
“You can call me whatever you want, baby girl,”
Melody hugged Calum tight again. “Daddy!”
-
“Calum! Calum! Calum!” Eve screamed, running out of her room with messy, static hair all over the place, and wearing only a shirt. She bangs on his door, letting him relish in privacy and a surprise wake up call. “Calum!” She screamed again. By that point, Michael, Luke, and Ashton were all awake, running out of their rooms to see what all the commotion was about. Ashton scooped Melody off the floor. “Calum Hood!” Eve screamed once more, ready to bang on his door even more, but she can’t because he pulls the door open with wide eyes and a petrified face. “Calum!”
“What do you want?” Calum asks angrily. Eve shoved her phone into his bare chest. He grabs it and stares at the screen. A video with his name, and a few comments, and . . . Calum’s eyes go wide. “Is this legit?”
“What’s going on?” Luke asked, reaching for the phone. Calum hands it to him, staring at the floor with saucer-sized eyes. Ashton reaches for the phone, but Luke pulls it further towards him to study the screen. “Eve posted the video of Calum singing to Melody on Instagram and-”
“-One-point-five million views,” Calum says with a blank voice. Absolutely stunned. “Overnight.”
-
Ashton checked the time on his watch. “We have five minutes,” Calum took in a shaky deep breath. “Now, we just have to find Melody.” She moved her little legs underneath Calum’s hoodie, that he was also wearing. Her head popped up, hitting Calum in the jaw. “There she is!”
“Don’t you think you should leave daddy alone?” Eve asked with a large smile on his face. “He’s going on stage soon, and I don’t think you want to be on stage while it’s really loud, right?”
Melody began to pout. “But I want daddy!”
“I know you want daddy, but he has to go on stage and sing your song,”
Melody turned her head to look at her father. Calum smiled at her, but she just rolled her eyes. “Make it good, Daddy,”
“I always do, don’t I?”
“Sometimes,” Melody sighed.
Successfully, everyone convinced Melody away from Daddy Calum’s hoodie, as long as she got to wear it. Calum took it off, put it over her head of curls and helped her fit her arms into the holes. He tucked long locks behind her ear and pressed his lips to her forehead.
“You’re the reason I’m here, baby girl,” Calum smiled. He got famous over the video of him singing to Melody, and after posting a few videos of his new band, 5 Seconds Of Summer, singing, they were asked to go on tour. Calum had only his daughter to thank for his song inspiration and joy. She sparked his failed career, with just a simple smile. “Are you ready to go on stage?”
“More than ever!” Melody pounded fists above her head. Calum tickled her armpits and sides, causing his daughter to erupt in giggles. “Remember,” She said through laughter. “It’s Melody, not Mel. I’m famous.”
“Whatever you say, Mel,”
He tickled her again.
A song started their journey on stage- the classic What I Like About You played with an extra-long guitar riff at the beginning, with lights and fire when Luke said the first lyric. The group danced on stage with their guitars, and Ashton hit the drums with such passion, Eve was afraid he’d break them. They quickly turned to their newest song, Valentine, that Calum wrote for Eve. Eve and Melody stood in the wings of the stage, waiting for the end of the song.
Then the time came.
“And we also have some special people to thank for this awesome career!” Calum said into the microphone, pointing in the direction of Eve and Melody. “First up, my oldest daughter, Miss Melody Hood! Can we get a round of applause for her?” Melody swaggered on stage with a little smirk. She’s Calum’s twin. Melody waved her hand and made the motion to be held, but Calum shook his head. “I got a guitar on me, dear, I’m sorry.”
“You aren’t supposed to tell a kid things like that, Hood,” Luke replied. He reached for Calum’s bass, to hold for the time Melody wanted to be in his arms. “Especially when she loves her daddy so very much.”
Calum shook his head and took off his bass. Melody immediately jumped into his arms, wrapping hers around his sweaty body. “Okay and now we have some other people to introduce.” Calum gestured towards Eve. “My other muse, my wife Eve Hood, and our unborn daughter Liberty Hood.”
Eve smiled when Calum hugged her too. This was everything she ever wanted. Calum, Melody, Liberty, and the feeling of being needed.

saw ur mom at the grocery store - ch
Tumblr media
Paring: Calum Hood x Original Female Character.
Warnings: General angst and drinking
Word Count: 3k
Authors note: who am I writing a one shot that stays a one shot???? Anyway, this is based on the song saw ur mom at the grocery store by Abby Cates (youtube spotify). I listened to it and I couldn't get this concept out of my head. It's pretty much drunk dialing Calum (the ex) after running into his mom lol. Shout out to @villainorigincal for reading it over for me, ily Blanca 💜💜💜💜. Oh, Italics are flashback because I guess that's my brand in writing oaskdoaksoaks

_______
Erin is too distracted by both the podcast blasting in her ears and the quest she has given herself of finding the correct ice cream flavor to be aware of her surroundings. So she doesn't notice the woman eyeing her nor her slowly approaching, gently touching her arm to get her attention until she's right there. She tries not to look too startled as she pulls her headphones down as she's suddenly faced with the last person she'd thought she'd run into in the stupid supermarket.
"Joy!" Erin greets, the need to be polite taking over, as she ignores the fact that she wants the ground to swallow her whole.
"Erin, sweetie, I thought it was you," Joy smiles kindly, probably completely unaware of how much seeing that smile hurt. She looks so much like Calum at that moment, same eyes, same smile. Maybe the correct thought would be that Calum looks so much like her. Erin hadn't allowed herself to think about him in months, not that it really matters, he's tangled in a mess of feelings that tugged her all around. Anger. Sadness. Hope. But right now, looking at the woman who has eyes the exact same shade of brown as his, it feels like she grabbed the love thread and yanked it to the forefront of her mind. "How have you been?"
"I'm great," Erin lies, "I've been really busy." That part is true. How else do you get over the love of your life walking away from you after two years if not by burying yourself into mountains of distractions so you don't have to think about it? It's definitely not healthy, but it was the only way she could cope. "How are you?"
"I'm great! I'm happy I finally got to visit again," she continues to smile and Erin can't help the smile on her face.
"I bet he's happy you're here," she says, almost without thinking. She used to tease Calum all the time about how much of a momma's boy he is but she loves that about him. Wait, turn around, she can't let herself think about him. Or talk about him. "How's-" she clears her throat, "how's Mali?"
"She's good, Calum too, really busy, so I'm just making sure he has everything he needs at home," she motions at the full cart she's pushing around. The smile in Erin's face gets harder to maintain when she hears his name, and she can't think of what to say, but Joy seems to completely miss that, "I'm gonna finish this and let you get back to your shopping. But it was great to see you, I've missed you, I wish we got to see you more," she adds, and Erin nods.
"Yeah, I missed you too, I'm happy I got to see you," she says, trying to ignore how her chest feels like it's about to split in half. They bid their goodbyes and Erin is left staring at the freezer beside her.
"Yeah, there's no way ice cream will be enough today," she mumbles to herself, grabbing the carton and moving blindly around the aisles. She contemplates a bottle of wine before shaking her head and reaching for the vodka on the shelf beside it.
She goes through checkout in a haze, trying not to think too hard about anything and it isn't until she closes the door to her car, left alone in the silence, that she lets her thoughts flow back to Calum.
Maybe let it's the wrong word. She can't get in the car without thinking of him, the empty space in the dashboard that used to hold her radio screaming at her about him just as much as the empty passenger seat. She remembers pulling at a stop and basically clawing the radio out of the car the first time one of his songs came on while she was driving after the breakup and she didn't have the heart to get a new one. Music is so tied to him, she can't listen to it anymore. It was nearly impossible to not let the memories drown her when any song was playing.
Erin's gaze kept moving from the road to Calum, the windows down, the road speeding by them, the wind blowing through her hair, and Calum's voice harmonizing with the radio making her sure there would never be somewhere where she would ever feel happier.
His hand was resting in her thigh, his fingers tapping to the beat and he was singing melody, harmonies, and instruments making her laugh while badly following, too distracted by him to put any effort into sounding good. When the song ended he leaned closer to her, whispering “I love you” and kissing her cheek. At that moment she couldn’t imagine loving anyone more.
She tries to ignore the empty space next to her, focusing on streets that blend together as the memories continue to try and take over as she fights the urge to start screaming. I don’t miss him. I don’t miss him. I don’t miss him. She chants to herself, halfheartedly hoping if she repeats it enough it will eventually stop being a lie.
Walking into her house is just as hard, the ghost of him standing by the front door, sleeping on the couch, walking through the halls, making the place feel haunted. She drops her bags by the counter, moving to get a mug and a spoon, before popping the ice cream open, scooping it to the mug before pouring a few shots on top of it, sitting down by the counter while mixing the mess in her hands.
There was flour everywhere. There was enough flour floating around that even the top of Calum’s hair had a thin white layer over it.
“Baby, you’re making a mess,” she laughed as she walked into the kitchen, leaning against the doorway to look at him.
“No, I’m making you breakfast,” he said, pointing at her with the whisk in his hand.
“Those statements are not mutually exclusive,” she teased, moving closer to him, wrapping her arms around his middle and leaning against his back, her head on his arm.
“It’s just a little flour,” he said, turning to kiss the top of her head, making her chuckle.
“A little?” She said, kissing his shoulder and moving to his side, rolling the sleeves of the hoodie, Calum’s hoodie, she was wearing, “how can I help?” She asked and he gave a grin.
“I’ve got it covered.”
“Yeah, in flour,” she laughed and he pouted, dipping his finger into the batter and splattering it across her nose.
She’s definitely in for a bad night, she thinks as she moves blindly around the house. She had tried meditation in the days when her mind was too loud to exist in but at the moment the silence was too deafening. Maybe that’s why she ends up sitting on the floor of her closet, after pushing boxes around until she finds the right one, the one with everything he left behind, the almost empty mug beside her as she stares at the framed picture in her hands.
“Can you just stop moving, please?” Erin pouted, turning to look up at Calum through her lashes, hoping he would just indulge her for once.
“Why?” He sounded annoyed, but he was looking fondly at her.
“I want pictures,” she complained and he chuckled.
“You have pictures.”
“I have pictures of you, I want pictures with you, so I don’t look like a crazy fan or whatever.”
“Fans get pictures with us too,” he shrugged and she groaned.
“I hate you.”
“You love me,” he teased, pulling her phone out of her hands, and her against his chest, kissing her cheek while taking a picture.
Looking at the photo she honestly can’t figure out how they got to where they are. How did they get there? How did they get to screaming in the middle of the night and him walking out the door without ever looking back? Also, how did she manage to go this long without reaching out to him? She can’t think of anything she wants more right now than to just hear his voice. She carefully puts the picture back in the box, the lid on top of it, and hides it again between her shoes, before standing up and pulling her phone out of her pocket.
The phone app is taunting her and so is the little bubble with Calum’s picture, while she moves around her room, her finger hovering over the call button.
She slides to the floor, her back against a wall and she just closes her eyes and hits call before she can lose the courage to do it.
“Hey, I can’t answer right now, but leave a message… or don’t, I can’t tell you what to do…” his voicemail greets her as she mutters “This is so stupid,” before the beep happens and she just sighs into the line.
“I saw your mum today," she starts, picking at a loose thread in her pants, "I don’t know if she told you, but yeah, I saw her and… I don’t know. She asked me how I was and I lied. I said I was great. Hell, I asked about your sister even though I was about to have a breakdown in the frozen section of the supermarket,” she pauses, chuckling to herself, “‘Cause, what else could I do? Tell her I have no idea how to exist in the world after you?” She runs her hand through her hair, still shorter than she was used to, “I cut my hair," she blurts out when her fingers reach her ends, and that just makes her want to list the things she's done in silly attempts to not think of him, "I don’t listen to music anymore, I… I got a new job, I tried meditation," she rolls her eyes, "and that’s funny ‘cause when that didn’t work I thought about asking Ash for some pointers before I remembered he’s also not talking to me. How long has it been now? Five? Six months? And I still have no idea who I am without you.”
The music was loud and Erin’s heels were not helping her navigate this place, the people and the mess making her sure she was going to fall at any minute. Which happened a few moments after and she would’ve felt the irony if someone didn’t catch her and if when she’d looked up to thank them all thoughts hadn’t been replaced by the stranger's face. He looked familiar but she knew if she’d ever met him before, she’d remember, the tan skin, beautiful brown eyes, bright smile. He was gorgeous and he was looking at her in a way that made her cheeks heat up, her heart speed up and her skin was tingling where he was still touching her.
“I don’t know why called… Actually, that’s a lie. I called because I miss you. I’m sorry about that, I’m sure you don’t wanna be thinking about me, but I didn’t have the strength to not call anymore.” She sighs, dropping her head to her free hand, “‘cause guess what? Apparently, I’m not over you and all it takes for me to break is your mum being nice to me,” she laughs to herself, feeling the irony of the situation, “she has your eyes, actually, I guess you have her eyes, but I bet you know what I mean,” she rubs her eyes, before looking up at the ceiling, her head hitting the wall with a soft thud.
The clock in the microwave was blinking 2:58 am and it was the only source of light in the room, along with the glare from the street light coming through the window. She doesn’t know how the night turned into a fight. But lately, fighting seemed to be all they did. Her boss was pushing her too hard and tour prep was draining him, making both of them tick-timing bombs, ready to go off at any minute.
“I can’t do this anymore!” Calum screamed, knocking the air out of her lungs.
“What do you mean?” She asked, her voice suddenly too small.
“I’m not doing this anymore,” his voice was calm and clear, “it’s over.”
His words sank in slowly, and she stood motionless in the kitchen while he gathered his stuff. Her feet seemed to start working again when he walked down the stairs, and she followed him, speechless, unable to ask him to stay as he disappeared out the door without a single glance back at her.
“I don’t know what I’m doing. I have no idea what to do. I guess I thought hearing your voice would change something. But nah… Still love you. Still miss you,” she finally admits, chewing on her bottom lip, but the weight in her chest is still there, “I’m gonna hang up now, you can ignore this if you want. I don’t even know if you’re going to listen to it, but, yeah," she clears her throat, "goodbye Calum.”
The phone slides from her hand down to the floor after she hangs up, and she hugs her knees to her chest, dropping her head and muffling her screams against her arm. What the hell did she just do? She shouldn’t be allowed to have a phone. Actually, maybe she shouldn’t be allowed to have alcohol.
She moves down to the kitchen, abandoning the mug in the sink, keeping the spoon in her hand as she takes the ice cream carton out of the freezer, abandoning the lid next to the bottle of vodka she decides to ignore, and moving to sit in the living room. Maybe she could distract herself enough so she would stop cringing to herself.
Calum was absentmindedly tracing patterns up and down Erin’s arm, their legs tangled together, her head resting on his arm, a movie she’s not paying any attention to playing on the tv while they cuddled on the couch. He kissed the top of her head and something clicked in her brain. She smiled to herself before turning so she could face him. He kissed the tip of her nose when she did and she giggled.
“Cal?” She whispered and he hummed a yes locking eyes with her. “I love you.”
The words were barely out of her lips before his lips collided with hers and he was kissing her with such intensity it was hard to breathe.
“I love you,” he said, smiling against her lips, before kissing her again.
The spoon is caught between her teeth, a blanket around her, the Netflix app on the tv while she tries to find something she wants to watch when she hears the doorbell ringing. She lets the spoon fall off her mouth, throwing the remote and the ice cream carton into the coffee table, tightening the blanket around her before moving to answer the door. She has no idea what to expect, it’s late and she doesn’t remember ordering anything, so when she opens the door she’s convinced she’s hallucinating.
“You called me,” Calum says, the second the door is out of the way, but Erin is too stunned by his presence to not stare at him. His hair is messy, he’s wearing sweatpants and an undershirt, his car keys in one hand, his phone, that he’s shaking as he speaks to get her to look at it, in the other, eyes staring intently at her.
“I’m aware,” she says, slowly, blinking at him as if she is waiting for him to disappear, “you wanna come in?” She asks, feeling weird standing by the door, moving back out of the way when he nods. She closes the door behind her, adjusting the blanket around her shoulders as she looks at him.
“Did you mean it?” He asks, anxious eyes, still holding his phone as if it would somehow vanish, and she frowns at him.
“I said a lot of stuff, I need you to be more specific,” she chuckles, awkwardly, and he steps closer to her, invading her space and stealing her breath away.
“Do you still love me?” He asks, studying her and she opens and closes her mouth a few times. What answer does he want? She considers lying, but his eyes on her make it hard for her to think of anything to say other than. “Yes,” she breathes, and his face softens in relief, his hands moving to cup her face.
“Thank God,” he whispers, before crashing his lips to hers. She kisses him back, the blanket falling off her shoulders as she grabs hold of his shirt. Her heartbeat is ringing in her ears, and she’s convinced she’s going to wake up at any minute. It feels like a dream, his heart pounding against her hand while his lips move on hers.
“Wait,” she pulls back, and he looks breathless at her while she pinches herself.
“What’s wrong?” He asks, anxiety coming back to his eyes, and she pinches herself again, “what are you doing?”
“I’m just making sure I’m not dreaming,” she laughs, and he tilts his head, eyes soft, “what are you doing?”
“I was kissing you,” he chuckles and she shakes her head, opening and closing her mouth.
“Why?” She asks, frowning at him.
“Because I love you,” he says, voice calm and clear, and she can feel her heart swell as she looks at him, a smile fighting its way onto her lips.
“You do?”
“I do,” he nods, and she nods back, pursing her lips.
“Does that mean you won’t walk out just because you’re frustrated again?” She asks, staring up at him.
“I’m sorry I did that,” he says, running a hand through his hair.
“I’m sorry I picked a fight in the middle of the night,” she says, apologetically and he chuckles slightly.
“I’m sorry I let you, and then left.”
“Maybe in the next fight, we can just…”
“Talk?”
“Yeah,” she chuckles as he moves closer to her, hands on her waist pulling her in.
“Sounds like a plan," he agrees, grinning at her.
“Okay, you can kiss me again.”

@rime-warrior : Hey love! Has anyone requested an imagine for Calum based on the song “Drivers license” by Olivia Rodrigo yet? I think you’re the only one who would be able to do it any justice 😭💕
“I still see your face in the white cars, front yards
Can't drive past the places we used to go to
'Cause I still fucking love you, babe”
You could hear the doorbell ring over the thunderous storm raging outside. It was late, probably closer to midnight than you imagined. Who could possibly be outside right now? especially in this kind of weather?
After four consecutive rings, you decided to get up from your spot on the bed and walk up to the door. It must be something very important for someone to startle you that way.
Once you got closer to the door you could also distinguish some strong bangs coming from the other side accompanied by the endless ringing “Okay, okay! I’m coming!” You called, but whoever was standing opposite to you mustn’t have heard you as they continued to disrupt the peace of a stormy night.
A shiver ran down your spine before you could reach the doorknob, almost like the ghost of a feeling, a warning for you not to open the door. Despite your common sense, you decided to open the door, already being too late to go back.
“Calum?”
He was standing in front of you, completely drenched from head to toes. His breathing was uneven, almost like he ran all the way over here, but his eyes were set on yours, unmoving as you both tried to take each other in.
“Calum-what is?-” Your words got stuck in your mouth as he pushed himself forward, grabbing your face delicately as he clashed his lips with yours.
You felt yourself melt into the kiss, making it everything you ever wished for. You wrapped your arms around his neck and deepened the kiss as you brought him closer to you. He was here, he was finally here with you. It all feels like a dream.
Your alarm clock marked 6 AM when you jumped from your dreams into reality. You should’ve known, everything was too good to be true.
You brought one hand to your face, trying to wipe away the tiredness of your eyes, but you found your cheeks were humid due to tears you didn’t even know you shed through the night, damping your pillow sheets once again.
It was always the same dream: Calum coming back to you. Night after night your mind drifted to another reality where you’d meet again, sometimes it was at a concert, other at the local café of your neighborhood that you used to love so much, but tonight was the first night where he appeared at your house. Which was funny considering that he hasn’t stepped foot in this place for almost a year.
You pushed your thoughts away as you tried to go back to sleep. And you did try, but the tossing and turning made you restless, you cursed your mind as the only thing you could see when you closed your eyes was Calum, standing at your door and asking for a kind of forgiveness you weren’t sure you could give. Although, who were you kidding?
Checking the clock once again you realized it was 20 past 6, still too early to go back to real life, but not too early to start and try to live a little.
Pushing yourself off the bed, you grabbed a big hoodie and some pair of sweatpants before putting on your running shoes and hopping into the bathroom to brush your teeth and clean your face before grabbing your keys and getting out of the house.
You sat on the driver’s seat, just like you did a thousand times, taking a big breath before starting the engine.
“You do know you have a perfectly good car in your driveway, right?”
You smiled at him and greeted him with a hug and a kiss as you climbed into the passenger's seat.
It was your usual morning routine. Ever since you met and he found out you lived nearby the studio he always volunteered to carpool with you. Since then, your mornings were filled with hugs, good coffee and stolen kisses you gave each other as the road to the studio became longer and longer thanks to all the detours you took.
“Hello, Calum. I’m very good, thank you for asking, how are you?”
Calum rolled his eyes and gave you a little peck on your lips “I would’ve been on time if I hadn’t had to pick your ass from the other side of town”
You lightly punched him in the arm “You know you love me” He smiled.
“That I do, darling. But I would love you more if you drove us from time to time”
“You know I don’t have a car!” Calum turned to you and pointed to the classic mustang sitting in front of your house, raising his eyebrows as if to ask if you were stupid “That’s my dad’s car!”
“That he kindly gave to you when he helped you move to LA so you could pursue your dream of becoming the next new sensation of music,” He said mocking a dreamy voice to try imitating you “He said it was yours, so it's yours! And honestly, it’s a pretty cool car if you ask me. A real chick magnet”
You mocked a gag at his old reference of movies from the 50’s “Sexist much?” You both laughed as he started the car and started driving “Anyways, he only gave me the car because mom was threatening to sell it on eBay if he didn’t get rid of it soon enough, so he could still come and get it whenever he wants to” You shrugged.
Calum started sniffing the air, “What?” You asked, sniffing as well in case there was something wrong.
“Do you smell that?” He asked with a concerned face.
“Smell what?”
He leaned closer to you and sniffed harder before whispering “The bullshit”
You scoffed and pushed him back “Haha very funny”
You waited until he stopped laughing, you never told him the truth, well two truths actually.
One: That you enjoyed the drives you had with him, it was a special time for the two of you to be yourselves without anyone to judge. You would laugh, sing, talk for hours as you sat in traffic under the city lights. It was the little moments that matter for the two of you, these were your little moments and you didn’t want to give them up just yet.
It was not easy being in a “relationship” that no one knew about, not even his bandmates, although you knew they were suspecting something. All the sneaking away while amid a recording session, hanging out in each other’s rooms, how adamant he was to carpool with you every day, even when he didn’t need to go to the studio… It was an easy tell, but it was also your private life.
You told yourself that it was for the best, that you shouldn’t mix work and personal life, especially when your personal life included Calum. He was adamant to keep whatever you had out of the public eye “What we have is good” He said, “Why ruin it with labels?” And you agreed, knowing that making everything official could just mess everything up. Calum was your best friend, after all, you would be damn if you lose him.
And for the second truth:
“I don’t know how to drive”
Just in time, the traffic light turned red. Calum turned to you in disbelief “Bluff” You shook your head, not looking at him just yet “Bluff! That can’t be right! Y/N how old are you?”
You shrugged again “I never needed to! I always enjoyed walking plus,” You said nudging your arm on Calum’s “I have the best driver right here!” You pecked his cheek with a kiss and saw how quickly they blushed, making you celebrate this tiny victory inside your head. You loved making him blush, it gave you some kind of security that he felt the same way.
Calum stared at you for a moment too long, making you self-conscious under his eyes. You could tell the gears were running inside his head “What if I teach you how to drive?”
You chuckled “Now I call your bluff”
“I’m serious!” He said, not taking his eyes from you “We have time before the tour starts, and that way you could drive us somewhere for once! You know? Picking me out and going on a date?”
Your eyes were set on him with an alarming tone, a what now? Was he serious? “You would do that for me?” You asked shyly, not wanting to fall into another of his pranks, but he seemed serious enough.
“Of course!” He said with a chuckle that accentuated all his dimples “Let’s get you your driver’s license, Y/N!”
Calum grabbed your hand and intertwined it with his, shaking it as a victory celebration and then placing a kiss on your knuckles. You laughed and reminded him where you were “Eyes on the road, Hood” even though the light was still red, you would rather him not noticing the red that tinted your cheeks and the loud beating of your heart.
You saw how the sun was starting to illuminate the coast as you drove by. Everything was so quiet this early in the morning and you were thankful, you needed this quiet so you could be alone with your thoughts once again. And, just like every day, that just meant you were thinking of Calum.
Could you blame him? Possibly, your friends said you should. But could you live with yourself knowing that you are holding a grudge towards someone who is probably unaware of it? Not in the slightest.
You were never official, not to the public at least, but in your heart, you knew he was the only one who could make you feel like this. He was the only one capable of making you laugh as hard as you did, cry the way that you did, and enjoy yourself to the fullest. You were your best when you were with him and now… How are you now?
Would he care?
You knew he loved you, he said so himself. The only thing you didn’t know was in what way. Did he love you like a lover? or just like a friend who he’d get to kiss and make love to from time to time?
The lump in your throat became stronger as you remember the last moments you had with him and all the promises he couldn’t keep. You tried to distract yourself, crying behind the wheel could be dangerous and you weren’t going to risk your life for him, not yet at least.
You turned on the radio in hopes that it would call your mind, at this point even the commercials would make you feel better if they made you think about anything but him.
“And now, Laurie. We have the hottest single of the year!” Said the radio host with the most cheerful tone a person could mutter this early “This up-and-coming artist debuted this single almost a month ago and it is still top of the charts in almost 34 countries all over the world!”
Now the lump in your throat came back but this time with a knot on your stomach as well. The first time you heard the song play on the radio you felt excited, after all this is why you came to LA in the first place. Yet the feeling became bittersweet in no time.
“My girls, boys, and non-binary folks; if you are in your car right now get ready to sing this at the top of your lungs with all the feelings you could muster and send a fuck you to your ex. This is ‘Driver’s License’ by Y/N L/N”
“I got my driver’s license last week, just like we always -”
You turned off the music and kept driving in silence.
You knew it was a bad idea to release the song you wrote about him. Maybe it was a petty move on your part, but… didn’t you have the right to be petty this time?
Either way is not like people would realize it was about him. It was your little secret, yours and Calum’s if he ever heard it, although you believe that if he did then he would’ve said something to you by now. Yet his silence was similar to the one in your car; deafening and heartbreaking.
“I don’t know Calum,” You said as you stared at your car parked in front of you “Is it safe to do it here?”
Calum was leaning on top of the hood, rolling his eyes at your indecision “Would you rather do it on the PCA?” You shot your eyes at him with a deathly glare, he just chuckled “I promise is okay, this parking lot is big enough and there are no cars left that you could accidentally hit”
You were both standing in the middle of the studio’s parking lot late at night. Calum insisted that this was the day you learned how to drive, so he spent the night at your place and today he drove you in your car, that way there would be no excuses left for you not to do it.
However, you were still hesitant. This was technically your father’s car, his other baby, and if you ever crash it you wouldn't know what you’ll do. Calum noticed your doubt and took a step closer to you, grabbing your hand in his to give you some sort of encouragement.
“Look, babe. It’s okay if you don’t want to do it. I won’t pressure you” He said softly “I just thought this could be fun for the both of us” He smiled “Fun and educational for that matter. But if you’re not ready then we can go home and-”
“I want to do it, Cal,” You said, “I just- I don’t know where to even begin!”
He chuckled and placed a kiss on your forehead, making all the butterflies in your stomach take flight.
“Tell you what,” Calum said confidently “You get behind the wheel and I’ll put us some inspirational music”
He walked back to the car to connect his phone to the speakers “You better put my song first!” You called after him as you walked towards the driver’s seat.
Calum laughed “God, I should’ve never told you that! Now your ego’s off the damn roof!” Soon enough he sat on the passenger’s seat next to you and buckled up.
“Not my fault that you think of me so often you want to put it into song” You teased, leaning in for a kiss that Calum was happy to oblige.
“Yes,” He said mid-kiss “It is completly your fault” Next thing you know ‘Kill My Time’ was playing on the radio, but Calum was not letting go of you just yet.
You wished this moment last forever, you wished every moment with Calum would last forever, but you both needed to breathe at some point “I wish I could kiss you all day long, I swear I could die on your lips and die happy” You said as you pressed your forehead to his, smiling like a fool in love.
“Soon, love,” Calum said as he crashed his lips against yours “Just wait until tour is over and then we’ll have forever to do just that”
You grinned at his words, a few days ago he promised to make your relationship publicly official once he came back from tour, that way you’ll have more time together as a fairly new couple. If he was willing to take that step, then you were more than ready to follow along. You knew you’d give everything for him if you had to and you still won’t regret it. You love him, and that was enough for you.
“Think I’m ready to start,” You said once you pulled away from him for the last time.
Calum nodded and patted his hand on your thigh “Okay, first you have to turn on the engine. Good, then you check all your mirrors and make sure your gear shift is on position-”
“My what?” You asked.
“Your gear shift, you know? The stick in-”
“Oh, you mean the PRNDL? You said, trying your hardest to stay serious, but failing to do so once you saw Calum’s face.
“You couldn't go one day without your references now, could you?” He said in amusing disbelief that had you both laughing.
The lesson was fairly simple, it just consisted of going forwards and on reverse a few times and practicing some turns in circles around the parking lot, and you were proud to say you were getting the hang of it pretty quickly. Calum turned out to be a great instructor with the patience of a god, he never got mad at you or showed that he was scared - even though it was pretty clear that he was, especially when you turned too far and almost hit a lamp post - and you appreciate him for that.
It was almost 2 AM when you decided to call it quits for the day and start back tomorrow. Calum was now behind the wheel driving you to your house so he could pick up his car and drive home.
“Cal?” You said once he parked in your driveway.
“Yes, love?”
“I’m really happy with you” You shyly admitted.
Calum’s heart beamed with love as he pulled you closer for a goodnight kiss “And I’m really happy with you”
You kissed him one more time before jumping out of the car “See you tomorrow!” He called before you watched him drive away.
The sound of a horn woke you up from your daydream memory. You didn’t know the light had just turned green until the car behind you started pounding their button and cursing at you to move.
You watched the white car from the rearview mirror as you drove away, it looked like his, all the white cars did, but you knew he couldn’t be here just yet, not until the tour was done.
A sinking feeling of hopelessness filled your inner thoughts once again. The promises he made faded like the wind in the summer once he stepped on that plane and decided that you were something he had to leave behind. It would’ve been good to know beforehand, that way you wouldn’t have wasted a year by the phone, hoping it would ring and that he’d be on the other line.
You glanced at the car’s clock one more time, it’s already too late to do anything, you’ve been driving around without a destination for hours when it only felt like minutes. Time is something you learn how to lose when you’re alone, minutes become meaningless once you realize there is no one there to share them with you, but it’s late and it was time to head home. You let out a sigh at the realization that your drive-through therapy didn’t work this time.
Deciding to take the long way home, you started to drive through the lesser-known streets of LA, hoping that you’d get lost somewhere and not knowing if anyone would care.
The dreams of running away came flashing down, more of an idea than an afterthought. Yes, you made it in LA, you have a hit song and your dreams are coming true. Why didn’t that feel like enough?
If you were gone, even just for a little bit, would anybody notice? If you just got up in your car and started driving somewhere unknown until the feeling of loneliness faded away. Could you drive your feelings away? Outrun them somehow?
You knew that if Calum could do it then so could you. It was so easy for him to just leave whatever you had behind, to leave you behind and hope that you were okay somehow. If he thought that you were okay then he maybe didn’t know you at all and you are probably better off without him, just like your friends say all the time.
But were you better off without him?
Tears started piling up in the corner of your eyes once again. No, you were not better off without him even though you want to be. And neither you are better off with him, if he ever came back to you, that is.
You swallowed a sob, trying your hardest not to break down again. It was useless, all the tears and all the songs and all the fuck him an attitude that you could muster… What was it for if not to dwell on your pain even more? You are still hurt and he still did not care.
You took a turn on the left, knowing the way like the back of your hand. You knew this path would lead you home, but you also knew it would lead you to his house as well.
The first time you did this was to practice how to find your way to Calum’s home without getting lost. You knew he wasn’t home and he wouldn’t be for many many months, but you wanted to surprise him once he got there, to pick him up and drive him to that date he promised you once he returned. Now, you avoided that road like a plague unless you had days like this, days in which missing him became everything you did, and now passing through his empty house gave you the reality check you desperately needed: He is gone. It also inspired you to write the song, it was a blessing and a curse.
You turned into the familiar street and looked to your right, you counted the houses passing by one, two, three, four… Until you spotted his old porch. Normally, that’s all you did. You would drive through his street and see the house dark and cold as his owner was out of town. But today there was a white car on his driveway.
Your breath got caught in your throat as you recognized the license plate, immediately stepping on the breaks and making the car stopped abruptly in front of the house.
That is his car… But how? You knew that Calum kept his car in Ashton’s place so they could drive up together to the airport every time they had to leave. What is it doing here? Tour didn’t end until a week from today and-
The sudden movement coming from the house pulled you from every rational thought as the front door opened. You held your breath as the person who stole all your sleepless nights came into view.
He was home.
Calum stepped out of his house with a bright smile on his face. His hair was shorter than the last time you’ve seen it, and he was less tanned, a fact that was easily noticeable thanks to the contrast of his leather jacket on his skin. But his dimples were intact as he smiled at whoever was inside the house.
A small figure came behind him, wrapping her arms around his torso as she was laughing at something he said. Her blond hair was falling down her back so elegantly, and her smile was bright as day as she hugged him, you wouldn’t have noticed that in the photos. She looked happy, but what broke you the most is that he looked happy as well.
He was home, but he was home with her.
You knew something was going on, even if there wasn’t anything official from either of them. You weren’t official, too. But seeing them was all the proof you needed to believe it. Believe that it was actually over and neither of you said goodbye.
You bit the inside of your cheek as silent tears started rolling down your face. You wanted to scream, to cry your hearts out, and let the world fuck itself over and over again. But for the love that you had on yourself, you promised that you wouldn't dignify him by making a scene. He didn’t deserve it. He didn’t deserve to know you cared.
With that in mind, you wiped your tears and floored the gas pedal, driving away from the scene.
“Hey!!!!!”
“Guess what?”

Read July 19th 14:49
Last week you sent your last text to him and he still hadn’t responded yet. You tossed all night waiting for at least a smoke signal from him. He was gone for two months now and he never missed one of your calls, it was so unlike him, especially when he promised you to call every day he was on tour.
You tried to distract yourself by doing everything you could think of. You watched videos, listened to music, played candy crush over and over again, and still, there was no answer.
You were starting to give up when a notification from Twitter graced your screen, it read: “Calum Hood, bassist from the band 5 Seconds of Summer, seen cozying up with a mysterious girl in a nightclub two nights ago”
You blinked twice and reread the headline, hoping that your eyes were deceiving you.
“The Australian bassist seemed to be catching up with some friends and letting it all loose at a wild night here in London after their sold-out show in the O2 Arena.
Hood was wearing-”
You skipped all that unnecessary information, scrolling down to the bottom where you knew all media kept the real gossip. A bubble of anxiety started forming inside your throat, as your fingers moved over the screen. The atmosphere became heavy while you could hear your heart thundering inside your chest, every little beat it made was hurting you, almost like it was banging your ribcages begging to be set free.
Time stood still as you looked at the pictures, not wanting to believe your eyes as they analyzed every detail of it.
There he was, hugging a blond woman from behind and resting his face on her shoulders just like he used to do with you. Even from the picture, you could tell she was gorgeous. The next picture showed her wrapping her arms around his neck and smiling at him. He had his hands cupping her cheeks, his face denoted a serious expression, but the look in his eyes was fixed on her.
He kissed her in the third picture, his hands still cupping her cheeks. It seemed like he was smiling through the kiss.
The last picture had them sitting on some kind of leather sofa. She was sitting on his lap and his hands were wandering very close to her butt, holding her close to him.
“The fans of the band wasted no time on identifying the mysterious girl. She seems to be the new tour assistant manager of the boys. Let’s hope that work and pleasure don’t get between this beautiful couple #goals<3”
The stream of tears was never-ending. You couldn’t understand what was going on, why Calum hasn’t said anything to you, why-why did he let it happen? Something was not right, and it wasn’t just your breathing getting heavy inside your lungs or your shaky hands as you typed the next text.
“We need to talk, please call me?”
You got no answers that night as you cried yourself to sleep, realizing that you had no one to comfort you cause nobody knew that you two were even together. You were utterly alone.
The next morning you woke up to no text from him, not even a call or a voicemail.
Read 08:45
You forced yourself to finish your nighttime routine. Ever since you came back home you did nothing but cry, but not of sadness, you were crying of anger.
With him being far away it almost didn’t seem real. You allowed yourself to create some sort of fantasy where he would come back to you, to start over where you left off and be together for everyone to see. How foolish.
You thought that he’ll hear your song and he’ll be running back to you to apologize, to ask if you still love him like before. But he won’t, because he is happy without you while you rot in your own pity party.
You grabbed hold onto the counter, trying to hold the tears as everything suddenly became clear as day. All the red flags you ignored were now shining as candy apples. He made a fool of you and didn’t even dignify you with at least some kind of warning or apology. He brought you down and now it was up to you to climb back up and even higher than before.
How could he?
All the memories you held close to your heart were burning in the pyre of your soul. You loved him, you knew you did. But all you meant for him was just a summer fling, something to waste time on before the real thing came along.
But he loved you…
Did he?
He spent entire days and nights next to you. He told you stories no one’s ever heard of. He sang to you to sleep and wrote you the most beautiful poems you’ve ever read. He picked you up every day and stayed with you until it was your time to leave. He made you feel welcome and there was not a day where you didn’t feel safe around his arms. He was your best friend. He taught you how to drive and what it meant to feel something real, something as important as the love you could have for someone. He loved you, he said he did, he promised he did.
Maybe love was not enough for him.
Your mind was divided, fighting over and over and over again about the same thing. Part of you cursed his name while the other part just wanted to be held by him, telling you that it will all be okay. But you couldn't even trust yourself on this one.
The doorbell rang, one, two, three times.
You were not going to answer it. One look in the mirror and you knew you couldn't answer anyone in this state. Your eyes were puffy and red, your cheeks were hollowed from not eating all day. There was nothing you could do to make you look or feel better, so whoever was behind the door will have to find another way to disturb the chaos in your mind.
However, they were persistent. With the ring of the doorbell came a few bangs. It seemed urgent.
You took one last look at yourself before deciding with a sigh to go and open the door. Whoever it was must have a good reason to come banging at your door a little past midnight.
“I’m coming!” You called, voice coming out a little hoarse from crying all night.
A shiver ran down your back and you felt like you were here before, in this exact moment where all your instincts told you to walk away. You decided to ignore them as you gently turned the doorknob and opened the door. Immediately wishing you didn’t.
“Calum?”
He stood in front of you, soaked from head to toe. Hands in the pockets of his jacket, not the leather one, but one more cozy. He was also wearing a pair of sweatpants and part of his hair was stuck on his forehead. You didn’t realize it was raining.
“Can I come in?” He asked, not even a hello.
You debated on whether or not to let him in. Part of you wanted to throw him back into the streets, but a storm was coming - much in the literal and subliminal way, and you didn’t want him to drive in this weather, you still care for him even though you shouldn’t.
With a simple nod, you opened the door wide enough so he could enter the house, a little “thank you” came out of his mouth as he stepped inside for the first time in over a year.
You closed the door and started walking into the kitchen with Calum following you like a stray dog. Your hands were shaking so you hid them behind your back as you slowly wrapped your arms around you in an attempt to comfort you throughout this whole ordeal.
Calum is standing in front of you on the other side of the island. He is not looking at you, but rather he is looking at his feet. You figured he was too scared to be the first one to talk and it broke your heart that he has suddenly become shy around you when you used to tell each other everything. ‘But whose fault is that?’ You thought.
Now you were just two strangers in a room.
“I thought you’d still be on tour,” You said, breaking the silence that has fallen upon you.
Calum looked up and he almost looked thankful that you spoke first “The last two venues canceled at the last minute due to weather conditions,” He said “So we came back earlier than expected”
You nodded and faced the other way. The fact that he was here in your home made your stomach turn and not in a good way. You always thought him coming back was going to be something joyful, but it became more painful as time went by.
“They closed café Mariannete while I was gone” He said, was he really going to talk about that right now? Did he came over here to reminisce about the café you used to have breakfast in?
“I didn’t know. I don’t go there anymore”
More awkward silence came upon you. You both knew he was bullshiting his way into the real conversation he was avoiding to have. He always used to do that and you have forgotten how much you hated it.
“Were you driving by my house today?” He asked and you froze on the spot. You didn’t think that he saw you.
“I was,” You cleared your throat “I was coming back home”
“And you didn’t say hello” It was more a statement than a question.
A sour taste filled your mouth. How dare he? “You were busy enough” You knew it was a petty answer, but what did he expect?
A flash of hurt came through Calum’s eyes as he said nothing in return. He knew you saw him with her, so he had no excuse to push the topic back to you.
The atmosphere was tense as the only thing you could hear was the ticking of the clock and the raindrops falling through your window. There was so much to say and yet none of you were brave enough to muster them.
You had every right to be mad and he had a right to explain himself, but you were not going to be the first one to cave in. Not without hearing from him first.
Eventually, Calum got restless of the silence.
“Your song is amazing,” He said, pleading for an answer that didn’t contain poison in your words “Ashton showed it to us the day it came out”
So he has heard it, you didn’t know if you should be proud or ashamed “Thanks”
“I forgot to congratulate you on your number one”
“You forgot to do a lot of things”
If there was ever a moment where you could give him the chance to redeem himself, this was it.
You saw how Calum shifted his weight from foot to foot, he had his lips pressed in a thin line and you could see how his eyes changed and fell into a deep pit of regret as tears were forming in the corner of his eye.
“I know the song’s about me-” He said.
“How did you figure that out?” You said sarcastically.
“Y/N…” He pleaded, running a hand through his face, but you were having none of that.
“Why did you do it, Calum?”
You needed an answer, something you could hold onto to eventually let go. Calum, however, was almost speechless.
The ticking of the clock became even louder as you counted the seconds until he spoke again. One, two, three…
Ten “I don’t know”
The answer cut right through you as you let a stream of tears roll down your cheek, not lifting your head to look at him in the eyes. It wasn’t what you expected, it was way worse.
Calum noticed your crying and started panicking, spilling every thought he had through his mouth “I-I don’t- I was drunk and she was there with our groups of friends and we were too drunk to even take notice of what was happening and we just kissed and- Y/N, I’m not perfect. We weren’t perfect, we weren’t even official and it was only a kiss and I thought it would be okay but then the tabloids and your message and I just- And she’s a great friend, she didn’t mean any harm but things happened and-” He stammered, unable to connect his thoughts as he desperately tried to fix something so you would stop crying.
“For me it was perfect” You cried “We were perfect in my mind, you made it perfect. God, Calum. Why didn’t you tell me? I spent months in agony trying to figure it out, to make it make sense! I beat myself up over and over again and there you were having the time of your life with a stranger!” Your voice was loud, not enough to yell, but enough to make it clear that you were fuming.
“What are you talking about?!” Calum said matching the tone of your voice “I missed you every fucking day but there was nothing I could do about it! You don’t know shit of what you’re talking about!”
You scoffed “Oh yeah! It surely seemed like you missed me! You never called me once, Calum. Not even to apologize and try to make it better”
“I didn’t know how!” He said, “I was scared that-”
“That I’d hate you?”
“That you’d forgive me,” Calum said in one breath, making you stare in shock “I-I didn’t want you to forgive me, Y/N, cause you deserve so much better. On tour I realized that I wasn’t ready for a relationship, no matter how much you mean to me and I didn’t know how to tell you that so-”
“And are you ready now? That’s why you are with her?” You interrupted, head filled with anger to even think straight.
“I’m not ready to be with either of you!”
The room felt silent once again.
You had no answer to that and you weren’t sure you wanted to hear more from him.
The rain outside your window started to calm down, only droplets of water were left as the memory of the storm that almost was.
Your legs gave out a minute later, sliding you down slowly onto the floor. Calum walked up to you and sat next to you, neither of you saying anything for what it seemed like hours.
“You said you loved me…” You said with a faint voice.
Calum sighed “I did. I do”
“And you love her too?”
He thought about it “I don’t know. I might” You closed your eyes as a tear fell down your cheek “She’s good to me, Y/N. And we really got close but-”
“I know,” You said with a soft sniffle “We weren’t perfect either”
“You do know I love you, right?” He said softly, turning his face towards you “And that everything we had was real. Every minute of it, every word in every song was true and it still is. All was real and it’s still there somewhere. I still want you in my life, Y/N, cause you make it better. I just,” He sighed “I need to figure my shit out”
“Yeah, you do” You said, making him chuckle darkly “But I can’t promise I’ll be here”
“I wouldn’t ask you to”
You sat there in silence for a few more moments, just enjoying each other's company before everything fades away.
“I love you, too” You said in a whisper, hoping that he won’t hear “I still fucking love you”
Calum sighed “I know”
“Guess that you didn’t mean what you wrote on that song about me
‘Cause you said forever now I drive alone past your street”

Monday
The sun pours down on your skin as you pluck the cherry, garnishing your soda. Separating the firm sweet fruit from the stem. Biting into its flesh as you work the pit from its center. You always loved summer days like this. Lounging in a beach chair as freshly mixed cherry cola clouded your mind. Your summer bliss was quickly interrupted by your mother calling out your name. Dissipating your sickly sweet fog as you took your earbuds out. “What?”
“Your brother and his friends are here,” she repeated, irritation lacing her voice.
You bit back a smirk as you gathered your things, slipped on the t-shirt you used as a coverup, and making your way back to the house.
Every summer, your mom dragged you and your brother, Micheal, to the family beach house. Even when he had gone off to be in a band, she would always remind him to try and come back for our yearly trip. She wanted you to give you the chance to having a bonding experience despite him being eight years your senior.
Now you were nineteen, and the tradition continued. But, this time, it was different. His bandmates decided to tag along on the trip, saying that maybe the change of scenery would help them write the album they’d been working on for the past couple of months. Your mother easily folded into the idea. “Anything to help my boys!” as she would always say.
When your mom told you the situation, you couldn’t help but smile, biting your cheek, trying to hide your reaction as your stomach twisted in on itself. That means you got to see him. Calum.
You’d known him your whole life, so many memories littered with him. When he would come over, strumming a guitar and mumbling lyrics to himself. Late nights spent talking when he would come home from tour, legs grazing each other innocently. Each time, causing a spark to shoot up your body and your cheeks to flush. As you’d gotten older, your attraction to him had only grown stronger. But you never pushed. You were young and in college, an average nobody. And well, he wasn’t.
The bright pastel purple color that was so vibrant in your young memory was now faded, standing, and storms slowly eroding it from the wood. You mourned the color sightly as you made your way up the steps. Sliding the glass door open, you’re met with cool air and laughter as you enter the house. “Look who decided to join us,” your mom says, causing embarrassment to waft over you as everyone turns to look at you.
Your eyes lock with his. His skin was tanner then you remember, eyes crinkling as he smiled. His buzzcut has grown out messily, but it’s cute, childlike almost. “Hey,” you wave shyly as if you haven’t known these people your whole life.
“S’up, kiddo,” Micheal asks, ruffling your hair. You quickly smooth it back down, letting out a small groan of annoyance. “Nothing,” you mumble half-heartedly. You quickly greet the others with a soft hello and a smile before rutting through the fridge and finding another cherry coke.
Everyone slowly departs from the kitchen, scattering to various concerns of the house. All but Calum. He lingers, hip leaning against the counter as his eyes rake up your legs, the shirt you were wearing barely covering anything. He would be lying to himself if he said he didn’t like it.
His tongue darted between his lips before he spoke. “So this is the famous beach house I always heard about,” his arms are crossed over his chest, t-shirt straining against his chest and biceps. “Mhm, that it is.” You nod, opening your soda with a crack as you hop onto the counter. Cold granite sends a shiver up your spine.
“You, uh,” you can hear the gears in his head turning as he selects the appropriate word. “You look good,” words are silky, but his body is so ridge, so scared to give in. His Adam’s apple bob as he swallows hard, regretting his words as soon as he said them.
You bite your cheek to hide your smile, a metallic taste melting onto your tastebuds as you bite down harder. “Thanks, you don’t look too bad yourself,” he chuckles, relaxing at your words.
There he is— peeling away his skin and bones and opening the deepest part of himself to dip back into the sticky sweetness he missed so desperately.

Nights in the OR
Tumblr media
A/N: This is called “I watch too much Grey’s Anatomy” so if you’re a fellow Grey’s fan in addition to a fellow Ashton ho, hi!
Word Count: 1.9k
And away, and away we go!
__
Nights on the peds floor we’re, in a word, uneventful. Low hums and beeps from machines doing their jobs while kids and parents alike snoozed between nurses prodding them awake to do their routine checks. You went through the charts of your patients, delegating a duo of an intern and older resident to each case with strict orders to page you only if something was seriously wrong, and a bright “Keep the tiny humans alive,” before making your way to the emergency room.
The trauma team usually ran the emergency room, a sea of green scrubs moving effectively and efficiently, assessing situations before paging the right departments, or diving headfirst into the work themselves. You caught sight of one of the doctors, a tall man in a shade of green scrubs darker than the rest in the room, and rolled your eyes. Attending trauma surgeon Ashton Irwin was about as arrogant as he was skilled, with an annoying habit of assessing quickly, albeit correctly, and working even faster on patients before shipping them off to the correct departments to deal with the fallout. You weren’t sure if that man had ever spent more than an hour, two tops, with a patient from start to finish. True to his arrogance and almost zero tolerance for sloppy mistakes, he was talking in hushed tones to a second year, his arms crossed tightly over his chest, jaw set, as the resident nodded frantically before running off.
Dr. Irwin took a moment to compose himself, giving the slightest shake of his head and relaxing his jaw, before turning to wherever he was needed next. His hazel eyes scanned the room, and even from where you were you could tell that they were more on the green side tonight as they met yours. He offered forth the smallest of nods and smiles in your direction, dimples indenting both sides of the smile.
You returned the gesture, before twirling your index finger about the room. Extra attending on hand.
He waved his hand. No need. Got it covered, thanks.
You smiled your best, I don’t give a damn smile, striding across the room to take a seat behind a computer, crossing your hands behind your head. And with little else to do on your part, you settled in for a long night of researching the pros and cons of artificial bones versus prosthetics in cases for patients with osteosarcoma, a joint effort you were working on with the orthopedic surgeon.
Around 2 in the morning, you took a break from your research to grab a cup of coffee and a small bite to eat. On your way back, you spotted the orthopedic surgeon with a patient. “Oh! Dr. Hood,” you said as you approached. “Come find me when you’re done. I have some ideas.”
The man swiveled on his chair to glance up at you, eyebrows pulled together in confusion. “You’re not in OR 2 with Ash?”
“Nnnnoooo…” you said slowly, taking a sip from your coffee. “Why?” you followed up in a clipped tone. What had Dr. Arrogant done now?
Dr. Hood smiled politely at his patient, and got the attention of his resident. “Ma’am, we’re going to take you up for X-rays now, and then we’ll see about setting your arm for you, okay?”
The woman nodded, clearly shaken up. Then, “What about my husband and son?”
“I’ll get word, and update you as soon as I can,” he promised, before the resident escorted the patient up to X-rays. Finally he turned his attention to you. “Car accident just came in. Parents are a little banged up. Mike and Luke are working up the dad. You know how Luke gets about stitches.”
The both of you shared a chuckle. Luke Hemmings, the plastic surgeon, had very high standards for even the most basic of stitches, and if he was on hand and free, it was an easy bet he’d do the work himself. “So, what’s Mike doing with him then, if it’s just stitches?” you asked, referring to the general surgeon.
He shrugged. “General work up and clearance, I suppose. But the mom and the son’s side took the impact the hardest. Specifically the son. Ash didn’t page you?”
You scoffed. “Why on Earth would Ash page me, Cal? It’s trauma,” you raised your hands and voice in a mocking manner.
“Uh, probably cuz the kid is like seven.”
You growled low in your throat, hands going to tie up your hair. “OR 2, you said? How long ago?”
“Not too long. They gotta still be prepping. So if you hurry…”
“Thanks, Cal,” you patted the man on the shoulder before taking off at a run towards the OR rooms, briefly mourning your discarded coffee and potato chips in the process.
When you shouldered your way into the room, Ashton was in the process of scrubbing in, while nurses finished prep. “What the hell are you doing?” you demanded, arms crossing instinctively over your chest as you made your presence known.
Ashton shut off the water with his elbow, turning slightly to face you. “My job,” was the reply in a tone that questioned your intelligence.
“Bullshit,” you spat. “That,” you pointed out the window towards the child on the table, “is a peds case, and you know it.”
“It will be once it stops being a trauma case, yes.”
“Why didn’t you page me?”
“Because I don’t need you. It’s a trauma case. I’m a trauma surgeon. Now, you want to stop asking inane questions, and let me do my job, or you wanna stand here and fight with me all night?”
“It’s a peds trauma case, and in case you forgot, I’m the peds attending who happens to be trauma certified. And I’ll be damned if you do some hacksaw job on my patient that I have to fix later when I can scrub in and do the correct job now. So, are you going to ask me to scrub in, or do you wanna stand here questioning my credentials all night when you know I’m right? Do not make me go above your head to the Chief, Ash, because you know I will.”
His jaw ticked underneath his mask, his eyes hard as he thought over your threat. “Well?” he snapped after a beat of silence. “Are you just going to stand there, or are you going to scrub in?”
~~~
It was a grueling surgery, working in tandem with Ashton. For all the shit the two of you gave each other outside of the OR, inside you were one of the best teams, each of you knowing each other’s moves before you made them, and knowing what the other was thinking in the subtlest of changes. Even with both of your focuses solely on the patient in front of you, you were both vigilant in sending Ashton’s intern out every hour on the hour with updates, in which you two were also informed of the parents’ recovery.
Just before the four hour mark, Ashton let out a small hum of approval and you nodded. “Close and get him a room on the peds floor,” you told the intern.
“You don’t want me to update the family?”
“No,” Ashton cut in, already discarding his gloves, mask, and removing his scrub cap, shocks of curly brown hair falling forward and plastering to his sweaty forehead. “I will. Give Dr. Y/L/N any trouble and you won’t see the inside of an OR for a month.”
The intern gulped, knowing their boss meant what he said and nodded. “Yes, sir.”
“Good. Y/N, I’ll meet you after I update the family to make sure we’re on the same page for how to proceed from here?”
“If you can remember how to page me, that is,” you smiled sweetly.
Ashton chuckled as he left the OR, while you stayed to oversee the intern closing, providing probably much gentler instruction than they were used to.
~~~
You rubbed at your eyes and stifled a yawn as you made your way to the cafeteria, still waiting for Ashton to page you. As you walked in, you realized why Ashton still hadn’t paged, spotting the man chatting with a few other attendings.
“Heard Y/N chewed your ear off,” Michael snickered.
“Yeah, she was pissed. Thanks for that, Cal,” Ashton said with a small giggle before changing his voice to do his best impersonation of you, “ ‘It’s a peds trauma case, and in case you forgot, I’m the peds attending who also happens to be trauma certified. Do not make me go over your head.’ Like yes, darling, I know. I’m the one who gave you your trauma certification.”
As the men started to laugh, you set your tray down in an empty seat at their table. “Morning, gentlemen!”
There was a cough as they tried to stifle their laughter, each of them getting out a choked, “Morning.”
“What were we talking about?” you asked innocently.
“Uh… just how Luke needs to learn to loosen up on the stitches,” Michael thought quickly. “Turns a five minute procedure into a half hour ordeal, it’s insane.”
“Sorry that I care how my patients look after a trauma,” Luke said with an eye roll.
“I’m sure, psych would call that mentality projection,” Calum teased.
“Paging Dr. Pretty Boy!” Ashton cackled.
“Hey! Rather be Dr. Pretty Boy than Dr. Arrogant,” Luke rounded on Ashton playfully.
“Who calls me that?”
“Uh… everybody. Y/N’s pretty accurate with her nicknaming,” Calum grinned.
Ashton let out a breath of disbelief as you smiled sheepishly at him, shrugging your shoulders. “Have you considered being less arrogant?”
“I am not arrogant!”
“Yeah, you are,” you all chorused, while Ashton crossed his arms and pouted. “Oh, whatever, the best surgeons usually are” you continued, turning your attention to Calum. “Before I got stuck in surgery, I meant to talk to you about artificial bones. Found some promising stuff.”
Calum paused in his sip of coffee. “Mmm, shit, awesome. Uh…” he checked his watch, “I got a half hour before rounds. You got time now?”
You checked your own watch. “Yeah, I got t-”
“Actually,” Ashton interrupted. “Y/N, I was wondering if we could talk real quick first. About the kid.”
“Oh! Yeah. We should probably do that. Cal, I’m off after rounds, if you’re free then.”
“Sounds good,” he nodded as he went back to his coffee while you and Ashton rose from the table, bidding the other three goodbye.
“So, his chart’s all up to date. I have one of my fourth years monitoring the situation, but I’m not expecting any complications to arise. Should be good to discharge probably later today or early tomorrow at the latest,” you brought him up to speed as you walked.
“Yeah, that’s great,” Ashton rushed, eyes darting around as he pushed open an on-call room and locked the door behind the two of you. “How long we got til rounds?”
“A little under a half hour, why?”
Ashton smirked as his hands landed hot on your waist, his lips finding yours. “Wanna boss me around some more?” he murmured against your lips, before he was trailing kisses down the column of your neck, before sucking into the sweet spot just before your collarbone, his hands jerking you to be flush against him. “Or, do you want my sincerest apology for being Dr. Arrogant, and forgetting to page you earlier?”
“Mmmm,” you moaned softly, tilting your head back, eyes shutting. “Little bit of both?”
“Yes ma’am,” he winked before scrubs went flying and your back hit the mattress.

Boy Next Door | Calum Hood | Mature
Tumblr media
Pairing: Calum Hood x Reader (boy next door)
Warning: smut, thigh riding, dirty talk, voyeurism (kinda)
Word count: 2,037 words
You sat at your desk, facing out the window. He's your next-door neighbor, Calum Hood. His bedroom window unfortunately is right in front of yours, making for some awkward moments when you would catch each other’s eyes. He's working out in his room right now. You don’t quite know when he switched from worrying about soccer to boxing and you don’t know how his mom allowed him a punching bag in his room. It was probably one of those things he easily charmed his mother into allowing. You watched him as he stood in the room, pounding away at the punching bag. You couldn’t deny that he's really good-looking. Calum's wearing a sleeveless shirt and his biceps are showing and boy he has some nice arms. He's dripping in sweat and his body is gleaming in the sunlight shining in his room.
You two had an odd relationship because you were best friends when we were younger but as we got older, you grew apart over the years as he got further into soccer while you were more focused on school. You didn’t want to be bitter over it but it really annoyed you how different he was to you, he was cocky and brazen every time you talked. You’ve always had a crush on Calum since you started high school and he started to grow into his features. The more he’s gotten into boxing the more you’ve had these little moments, you would watch him box and he would peak up at you when you were changing clothes. There was always some tension between you two ever since you two had begun these little staring contests and it’s finally getting to be too much for you.
You realize you’re staring at him and try to turn your head away but it's too late. He already saw your eyes and he shot a ridiculous smirk at you. "Staring is rude." He mouths at you. He's no longer focusing on working out, but more on the flustered reactions he can pull out of you. He pulls off his shirt and continues his work out carelessly, going right back at the punching bag. He knows your eyes are watching him and not the homework you had once set out to do. You decide to abandon the homework and change into some more comfortable clothing for the rest of the night.
You stand up from your desk, eagerly pulling off your shirt and exposing your red bra. You headed over to the dresser, opening the drawers searching for something to wear. You knew that Calum was watching as you got changed but it didn’t really bother you anyway. You wanted him wrapped around your finger.
You turned over your shoulder to look out the window quickly and saw that he was still going at the punching bag but also glancing out of the corner of his eye towards your window. You grin at him and continue to dance around the room. You examine his body as you swayed around your room, taking your sweet time to get dressed, he's a lot more muscular than he seems, not completely ripped but he was in pretty good shape. You pull out a t-shirt and toss it on the bed before turning away to take off your jeans to reveal your matching lace panties. It's so funny, you’re going through your dresser and you can see that Calum had given up on boxing, he was more focused on watching your window.
You ignore him for a few more moments before you turn around to look at Calum's window. He's gone. You laugh to yourself at the thought of Calum running away to relieve himself. You sit on the edge of your bed. You hoped desperately that Calum would never bring this up again, even though it wasn’t the first time he’s watched through the window. Just as you started to relax, moving on from the stupid thing you just did. You hear a knock on your front door, you huff before getting up from your bed. You pull on the giant white tee shirt that goes right below your panties, hoping you can quickly get rid of whoever is at the door. You skip downstairs quickly. You throw open the door to see Calum standing there, he's in a pair of shorts with no shirt. It looks like he had simply wiped the sweat on his forehead before coming over.
"Oh um hi..." You tell him awkwardly, shifting your weight from one leg to the other. Of course, it was him because why wouldn’t it be after what you did earlier. You could easily shut the door and run away but something kept you there, looking at him.
"Hello _____... Those are a nice bra and panties you're wearing there." He grins cockily and adjusts your tee shirt collar so he can see your bra strap. His stupid grin makes your heart leap and you’re quite embarrassed to be so weak for him.
“Umm... Thank you." You say awkwardly looking down, "What do you want?"
"How about I come in and show you what I can do to that pretty body of yours?" He says leaning against the door frame. His bold attitude had you weak in the knees, you hated what he did to you.
"I can't because my parents are home." You lie, biting the inside of your cheek.
"Now _____, I live next door, I saw them leave," he says stepping inside. He grabs your arm and pulls you away from the door. He slams the door and pushes you up against the door. "Don't tell me, you're gonna be shy now?" He smiles at you smugly, feeling your body wither against his every touch.
"I'm not," You rolled your eyes, putting your hands on his chest, "It's just that it's you." You prayed he couldn’t feel your heart beating out of your chest.
"That didn't bother you when you were in your window." Calum gets in your face.
"Whatever." You pushed him back.
"Lemme see what I can do to that body of yours." One of his hands pins both of your arms above your head, “Will you let me show you?” He asks before bringing his lips down and placing them on your neck softly. You couldn’t speak, you just nodded, lost in the feeling of his lips on your neck. His lips trailed up and down your neck before finally capturing your lips. His lips moved against yours painfully slow, so much so you were itching to be able to touch him at this moment. He pulled back, stealing the breath right out of your lungs. “Go upstairs.” He nods and waits for you to head upstairs. You walked away, him trailing behind you. You could feel his eyes burning into your back as he was scanning your form. You open the door and step inside nervous about what Calum was going to do next.
He steps inside, shutting the door behind himself, “You going to do what I ask baby?” He looks you up and down. You shift nervously before nodding, “Words baby.” He raises his eyebrows. You wanted him wrapped around your finger but now he’s got you around your finger.
“Yes, I’ll do what you ask.” You nod before looking to the floor, never have you ever felt so easily submissive to someone. Surprised at where this shy streak came from because you were never quite that shy.
“Good,” He nods, walking past you. He sits in your desk chair, spinning around slowly. He smirks at you, beaconing you over with two fingers. You tentatively stepped over to him, standing in front of him, “Take a seat baby.”
“Okay.” You let out barely louder than a whisper. You sit down, straddling one of his thighs while facing him.
"I’m sick of this little game we’re playing,” His hands find your hips, “I’m sick of seeing you changing at the end of the night and how when you study you're always in those short shorts and that tight white tank top.”
“It’s not just me,” You hum, hands trailing on his chest, “You’re always over their boxing, all sweaty and shirtless with your nice fit body on display.” You weren’t sure where the words were coming from.
“Yeah, baby?” His hands inch up under the t-shirt, “You know how much I think about the things I could do to you?”
“Calum…” You trailed off.
His hands found the hem of your t-shirt, “You know how many times I’ve seen you through that window and thought about being here with you?”
“I’ve been right next door this whole time,” You roll your eyes, “You could have come over at any time.”
“Yeah?” He pulls the t-shirt off your body, “You’re talking a big game right now but I just know I could make this pretty body respond in such amazing ways.” Once your shirt is off, one hand finds your hip and the other reaches up to grip your throat, “You would love that wouldn’t you?” You nod and he raises his eyebrows.
“Yes…” Your chest was heaving up and down, heart racing with anticipation.
Calum drags your body across his thigh closer to him, the friction causes you to let out a little moan and you buck your hips at his. To his surprise, he answers your thrust with "Tsk tsk... someone is needy." The feeling of the lace grinding against your clit was incredibly foreign but felt amazing. You subconsciously kept your hips moving against his thigh.
"Oh my god..."
His hand on your hip pushes you back again and you immediately let out another moan. Calum grins, looking down at where the lace met the cotton of his gym shorts, “You really love that feeling huh?” He chuckles, dragging your hips again. You let out a bit of a whine and Calum chuckles again, “I bet I could get you off on my thigh alone, couldn’t I?” He drags your hips along his thigh a little faster than before.
“Please Calum,” Your hands trailed up from his chest to grip on his shoulders as you ground your hips against his thigh.
“That’s right baby,” His fingers dig into your hip on one side while the other leaves his throat, dragging down your back to unclasp your bra, “Now keep going.” He slid your bra off then tossed it on the floor. His hand returning to rest on your shoulder. His head dipped down, capturing one of your nipples in his mouth, eliciting the loudest moan yet. He tweaked your nipple between his teeth on one side and a hand took the other nipple in his hand.
You kept your steady pace, the friction was becoming a lot as you kept grinding, “Calum it feels so good.” You threw your head back, “I want more.”
He grinned up at you from his place on your nipple before pulling off with a pop, looking down at the wet patch spreading across his jeans because you had soaked through the lace, “Let me see you come undone on my thigh before I give you anything else.”
You nodded quickly, feeling eager to please at this moment before picking up your pace with the help of Calum’s hands, dragging you along. “I’m so close.”
“Yeah?” Calum nods before flexing his thigh, sending a jolt through your body, “Come on baby, I wanna see you cum.” His hand left your shoulder and went to your hip, both hands began to drag your hips faster than before. Your breathing was uneven and chest heaving more than ever, you felt the knot in your stomach tightening as you got closer and closer to the edge.
“Holy shit,” You threw your head back in pleasure as you came all over his thigh, “Holy shit.” You repeated.
Calum stopped grinding you against his thigh, “You like that baby?” He took a handoff of your hip to brush a strand of hair out of your face and you nodded.
“Yeah, I really liked that.” You said while trying to catch your breath, Calum grinned before he brought his lips to capture yours again.

august 25, 2018 los angeles, california orion
“Ready to go home?” Mama asks. She’s holding my bag of dirty pajamas and loungewear, the strap slung over her shoulder. She looks tired, but she’s still smiling.
“Please,” I say.
The past week stuck on the oncology ward has been brutal. It took five whole days for my fever to actually break, but my other symptoms didn’t go away until yesterday. Mama has been here since the first day, whereas Mom had to go back to work after the first couple here. I’ve been happy to have both of them here for whatever amount of time they have been able to be.
Emelia has come by every day to check in, and Macy and her parents have been taking care of Duke for me. Ashton hasn’t spoken to me at all since our last conversation.
Calum remains as clueless as ever, just as I’d like.
Mama and I exit the sterile room I’ve called home for a week, nodding to the kind nurses that I’ve befriended. Calum would make fun of me, saying I can’t go into any room without making a friend, but I try not to think about how Cal would feel about all of this.
We ride the elevator down to the ground floor and head out to the parking garage. It’s not really outside, since we’re surrounded by concrete and cars and absolutely no nature, but it’s nice to feel the sun and fresh air.
After we clamber into her car, she offers to take us to Taco Bell, my favorite fast food, but I still don’t have an appetite, so I tell her to just take me home. When we get to the parking garage at my apartment, the sight of my shitty car, still in its parking space next to Cal’s, makes me smile for some reason. It’s nice to be home.
“I’m glad to see you’re feeling better!” Ron cheers as we enter the lobby. “I’ve missed seeing you.”
I smile at Ron, but he can’t see it since I’m still wearing a mask. I’ve been instructed to wear it whenever I leave my apartment for the rest of my chemo treatment. It’s a fair punishment if it keeps me from feeling as awful as I have for a week. “Hi Ron, I’ve missed you too.”
“You have a delivery in your apartment, by the way,” Ron says. “I sent it up with Macy yesterday.”
“Thank you,” I tell him. Macy didn’t tell me about any delivery, but I’ll see what it is soon enough.
Mama and I ride the elevator up to the fourth floor, stepping out and walking the handful of yards to the door. When I unlock it, Duke is waiting impatiently on the other side, wagging his tail at lightning speed when he sees us. I pick him up instantly, embracing the small ball of fluff in my arms and letting him nuzzle his face into my neck.
“Hi buddy,” I coo, petting his head. “I missed you so much.”
As I set him back on the floor, I notice what the ‘delivery’ is that Ron mentioned. Sitting in a vase in the kitchen is the largest bouquet of chamomile I’ve ever seen, a light green envelope tucked in the middle of the flowers. I stride over to it, grabbing the card to open it, revealing the custom message inside.
I know it’s not a special occasion. I just miss you and wanted to do something special. Don’t be mad. I love you. Xxx - Cal
I take several deep breaths, trying not to cry. I don’t cry, but I do get a little teary-eyed. Thankfully, Mama comes over and starts talking. A welcome distraction.
“Aw, from Cal?” She asks. “He’s so sweet. Okay, I’m going to take Duke out on a short walk for you. Mom and Eri are coming for dinner and should be here around when I get back.”
I want to object, say I can take Duke for a walk and she doesn’t need to do anything else for me, but I know I’m not supposed to spend much time outside and I should accept the help while I have it. “Thank you, I’m gonna take a shower.”
Mama gets Duke hooked up in his harness and disappears quickly, giving me some true alone time for the first time since last week. The apartment feels so quiet compared to the hospital, so I play some music on our Bluetooth speakers while I shower.
When I get out of the shower and start to get dressed, I catch a glimpse of myself in the mirror, naked. It’s so bad I can’t look away. My ribs are all visible and my hipbones stick out more than they should. My sternum is defined and my arms look like sticks. I then notice how hollowed out my face looks. I knew I was losing weight and getting smaller, but what I see in the mirror is far more concerning and jarring than what I expected.
I wonder if any of my non-workout clothes will fit. I’m already the smallest size in jeans that I can find, so if they’re too big I’m simply out of luck in the pants department and will have to check the kids section to buy anything new.
The changes in my body are noticeable, and I know Cal will have something to say about it when I see him.
I miss him. I miss him so much it hurts. I wish he was here with me. At the same time, I dread seeing him. I’m scared of telling him everything that’s going on and I know that he’s going to know something is up when he sees me. He’s going to ask about it. Everything is pointing me to telling Calum in San Diego and not in November, which wasn’t my plan, but now I don’t see how any other option is feasible.
It takes a lot of self discipline to tear my eyes away from my reflection. I head into our closet to find clean clothes to put on, immediately going to Calum’s side for a sweatshirt before grabbing a pair of comfy shorts from my dresser. In baggy clothes, my sickly small frame isn’t as noticeable.
By the time I’ve dried my hair and make myself a cup of tea, Mama is back with Duke, saying Mom and Eri will be here soon. I put the kettle back on so they can also have tea once everyone is here.
I take a few minutes to try to tidy the kitchen and do the small amount of dishes I’d left behind before I had to get admitted. Duke follows me around the apartment the whole time, making me feel bad for leaving him here alone for a while. I fill up a Kong with peanut butter to keep him busy and as a treat, running it over to his bed to lay down with.
As the kettle starts to whistle, a knock sounds on the door before it opens. My little brother Eri runs inside at full speed.
Eri and I have a big age gap between us, but we’re pretty close considering we don’t live together and he’s 16 years younger than me. My moms fostered kids for my entire childhood, and Eri was placed into their care at a few days old. They ended up adopting him and named him after a constellation, just like me. Eridanus.
“Orion!” Eri yells, his clumsy footsteps echoing around the place. He finds me quickly, pummelling into my hip with his tight hug.
“Eri!” I cheer, bending over to pick him up. He’s not that heavy, but he feels heavier today, and it takes a lot more energy than I’d like it to for me to hold him.
“Do you feel better?” He asks in his kiddish voice. His L sounds more like a W.
“Yes, much better,” I tell him. I push his dark brown hair out of his eyes so I can see them more clearly. I do feel better, but I definitely still don’t feel that great.
“Where’s Calum?” He asks. His dark brown eyes panoramically scan my apartment, searching for his favorite person on the planet.
“Eri, we told you, Calum is working. Remember?” Mom turns the corner from the foyer into the kitchen, giving me a knowing smile.
“Oh yeah!” Eri says. He then starts to pout. “I miss him.”
I laugh, leaning forward to kiss his soft cheek. “Me too, buddy.”
“Here, wanna go look at his toys?” I ask him, setting his feet back onto the tiled floor in the kitchen.
Eri lights up and nods, and I grab his hand to lead him over to Cal’s small collection of Legos.
While Eri and I mess around — gently — with Calum’s Legos, my moms are in the kitchen. They clean up, much to my dismay, and they order our dinner without asking us what we want. I’m updated with this news when Mama leaves to go meet the Doordash driver and Mom tells me they’d ordered Thai food.
I appreciate the free dinner, I just wish they had given me the opportunity to pay for my own food.
Everyone digs into their food. My moms share a mix of drunken noodles, pad thai, and pad see ew, all with tofu, while Eri eats chicken gyoza and edamame. I pick gently at the drunken noodles, which were ordered for me, but they know I won’t eat much, which is why they’re also eating from my styrofoam container.
As we’re eating, I get a Facetime call from Calum. Thankfully, I’m in a setting where I can answer and not have to conjure up some scenario for being where I am. I’m just home, with my family, which doesn’t require some kind of explanation.
I accept the call quickly.
“Hi!” I say, smiling brightly when I see his sweet face on my screen.
Calum grins instantly, his eyes lighting up and his whole face turning into a smile. “Hello!”
I pan the camera over to my family, just letting him know they can hear everything he says. They all wave, and Eri runs back over to my side so he can squish his small head into the frame next to mine.
“CAL!” Eri yells, his face showing far more excitement than mine.
“Eri! Hi, bud, it’s so good to see you!”
“We got here and you aren’t here!”
Cal frowns. “I know, bud, we’re in Australia right now, but we’ll be in San Diego in a little over a month! Did your sister tell you you can come to our show?”
Eri gasps. “No! Sissy, why didn’t you tell me?!”
I fight the urge to wince and plaster on a fake smile. “Sorry, buddy, I wanted it to be a surprise.”
I hadn’t wanted to ask my family about that day until we were closer, until I knew how I was feeling and how Cal and I were doing. But, Calum just brought it up to my very naive brother who absolutely adores him, so that thought is long gone. Now they have to come. Eri won’t forget. He’ll ask me about it all the time.
“I can’t WAIT!” Eri yells. His smile is so wide I would feel like the biggest asshole ever to tell him he can’t come. He has to come.
“Me neither, buddy,” Cal says. “Is it OK if I talk to your sister alone for just a sec?”
Eri frowns, his pout making me feel bad, but I understand completely. I want to talk to Cal alone, too.
“I’ll call you tomorrow, bud, does that sound okay?” Cal asks, trying to alleviate the drama that Eri is on the verge of bringing.
Eri lights up at the suggestion. “Yeah! Call Mama tomorrow!”
Calum nods. “Sounds like a plan, big guy. I’ll call as soon as we land in Canada.”
“Okay! Bye, Cal! I love you!”
“Love you too, Eri. Be nice to your sister!”
Eri rolls his eyes and says a faint ‘yeah, yeah’ and then he runs over to Duke, tackling him in a hug.
I turn back to my phone. “Hi,” I tell Calum, whose friendly grin turns into one of pure love. God, I love him.
“Hi, my love,” he says.
“Are you at the airport?” I ask.
Calum nods. “Yeah, we’re at the airport to fly to Toronto. Just wanted to say hi before we’re in the air for 14 hours.”
“Hi,” I tell him. Looking at his face on my phone screen, I can’t help but smile. His face is my favorite.
Calum sighs and it sounds sad. Why is he sighing?
“What’s wrong?”
His facial expression falls even more than it already had. He pouts. “Nothing, sorry. Just can’t believe we still have so long before we’re back in California.”
“Not that long!” I try to reassure him. I feel the same way, but I’m trying to be positive. I went a whole 19 years without him. I can live another month and week or so without him. Besides, it’s not really a life without him. He’s still here, just a little far away. “It’ll be here before you know it.”
Calum nods. “I know. Just hate being away from you,”
As the Facetime call with Calum ends, a mix of emotions lingers in the air. Home feels comforting with Mama, Eri, and Duke around. The chamomile bouquet from Calum adds a sweet touch, making me smile despite the challenging week in the hospital.
Back in the apartment I share with Cal, surrounded by Thai food and family, the sense of normalcy is a welcome relief. My cup of tea is warm, keeping the light in my heart burning as I wait for Calum to come back to this side of the world so I can deliver the devastating news I’ve been holding as cards against my chest. Some day soon, he’ll see the hand I’ve been dealt.

MY GIRLS. | CALUM HOOD
PAIRING: calum hood x blackwoman!oc
WARNINGS: mentions of pregnancy, fluff, shitty/toxic ex boyfriend, mentions of cheating, profanity
SUMMARY: cleo catches calum talking to her daughter about his feelings for her
WORD COUNT: 2.5k
SKYE’S NAV. | CALUM HOOD M.LIST | REQUESTS
Tumblr media
cleo has been calum’s best friend since the beginning of the band’s career. cleo and her family had already lived in london when the band moved there, and it just so happened to be in the same neighborhood. it was very cliche, cleo’s mom made the boys food and dragged cleo along to greet them.
cleo didn’t think she’d become friends with them, she especially didn’t think calum would end up as her best friend.
it was ashton’s idea to invite cleo over to their house one day. they tried their best to make her feel comfortable, noticing that she was kind of tense and apathetic while in their presence.
truthfully, she didn’t want to be bothered by anyone that day, having found out some news that brought her mood so far down, but she tried to push through it in front of them.
after a while calum noticed that she’d disappeared without anyone noticing. he searched the house, not having any luck finding her until he finally found her sitting on the back porch sobbing with her phone up to her ear.
calum didn’t ask any questions as to why she was crying or who she was talking to (he later found out that her dad died and she was listening to a few voice mails that he left her), he just sat down beside her and held her until she was calmed, letting out frequent sniffles against his chest. from that day forward, calum promised her that he’d always be someone that she could talk to about anything. he’d be her comfort person if that’s what she needed.
they stayed in touch with her while on tour, even invited her to a few shows when she had a break from school. they were always so humbled, never letting the rise of fame get to their heads.
cleo loved watching calum do what he loves, from writing the music, singing the songs, make the music, she loved watching him love what he was doing. calum would always call her and let her listen to what they were working on, having that much trust in her that she wouldn’t leak anything (she never did).
calum had always told her that he’d do anything for her, and he stuck by that when at 21, she once again came to him crying because her shitty boyfriend knocked her up and left after giving the illusion that he cared and wanted to be there. calum immediately took her in and let her stay at his shared home with ashton.
cleo had moved out to LA for college when the band did but stayed at her own apartment with a roommate. she ended up meeting her boyfriend in college. he was a nice guy at first; very loving, always gave her compliments, made sure she was safe, but after their third year of college started, he began to show his true colors.
cleo’s boyfriend never liked anyone she was around, since she came out to him about her sexuality in their second year, he slowly became controlling. he would try to force her to stay inside, accuse her of cheating if she hugged, looked, or laughed at another person’s jokes, he even tried to break her friendship with the boys (mostly calum).
he hated seeing her smiling around anyone, but when it came to calum, there was a different kind of angry. he’d try to pick fights with calum, publicly grope cleo in front of calum to make him jealous, even shoved his tongue down her throat in front of calum to make him jealous.
the behavior never stopped and it slowly turned toxic. her being accused of cheating, screaming back and forth in each other’s faces, her threatening to leave, his constant apologies, and the make up sex, it was all so exhausting.
calum hated seeing her so upset, seeing or hearing her cry when she calls or facetimes him, or shows up at his house. it was too often that you’d cry over how terrible you were being treated, but he knew it wouldn’t be easy to just up and leave, especially with how much time and effort she put into trying to make her relationship work.
it was an ongoing cycle between the couple, until one day she realized her period was a little too late. she’s wake up and immediately run to the bathroom where she’s empty out her stomach into the toilet, foods that she could normally tolerate made her nauseous, and she’s craving certain foods that she didn’t like that much.
panicky, she jumped in her car and drove to the nearest walmart, getting four pregnancy tests before paying for them and driving back home.
high strung with tears silently flowing down her face, she sat down on the lid of the toilet waiting for the timer on her phone to go off to let her know when she could flip them over.
it felt like years until the results were ready. she turned the timer off and reached out only to freeze up and break down, the heels of her hands digging into her eyes. once she finally just a bit of her composure, she flips them over one by one, the first saying NOT PREGNANT and the last three having the same results, the small digital screen reading PREGNANT. she let out a loud, heavy huff before calling her boyfriend over to talk.
he doesn’t answer the first call, but when cleo calls a second time he answers a little too harshly, “what? i’m doing something.”
“come over, i need to talk to you.”
he lets out a low grunt, “you can’t say whatever it is on the phone?”
she’s narrowing her eyes and stays quiet as she tries to listen closely to hear what he was doing, not really wanting her suspicions to be right. after a few seconds of silence, she answers, “no,” her tone jarring and final, letting him know that there was no room for negotiating. he sighs, covering up the pleasure with fake annoyance to not give himself away. before he could answer, she cuts him off, “i expect you here in at least 20 minutes.” and with that, she hangs up.
it takes him less time than expected to show up, but 15 minutes later he’s knocking at her door. when she lets him in, he smells of sweat and whatever cologne he sprayed himself without before coming, which doesn’t help at all with the thoughts running through her head.
cleo pushes the door closed, a little harder than he had expected her to, before walking to sit on the couch across from the chair he was sitting in.
“what did you need to talk about?” he asks as he watches her fiddle with the hoodie she was wearing. she doesn’t answer immediately, rubbing her hands over her face frustratedly.
“i’m pregnant.” his face crumbles in distaste, staring at her for a little longer than her liking. “if you want to leave, you can. i’ll do this by myself if i have to.” cleo shrugs a shoulder as her face remains emotionless.
“cleo, are you sure you’re pregnant?” he replies after letting out a sigh. “are you just trying to trap me or what is this?”
“no, i’m not fuckin’ trapping you. i just said that you can leave if you want to!” cleo tells him, letting her frustration get the best of her ass her voice begins to rise.
“are you sure it’s not calum’s? with the way you dick ride him so much, i’d be surprised,” he jokes with a chuckle, although they both knew it definitely was not a joke.
“you know what, you can fuck right off! are you bloody mental? why would you ever say that?”
“it was a joke, calm down.” he’s holding his hands out to signify peace, although that’s something she never gets when she’s with him. “it was just a joke. obviously i’m not leaving, you’re having my baby.”
“okay,” cleo rolls her eyes at him before he was making up some shitty excuse as to why he had to leave.
a week later, she finds out that he was the one cheating and blocks him on everything, knowing he wouldn’t care at all because he hasn’t tried communicating since the day they found out she was pregnant. cleo was with calum when she found out she was getting cheated on. she didn’t cry, she didn’t whine, she didn’t care, she was more worried about the baby the was growing that she was getting ready to go see.
she stayed the rest of her last year of college in her shared apartment with her roommate before she eventually moved in with calum and ashton.
her daughter, neveen, was now 4 years old and absolutely loved calum. cleo would always find her playing or watching tv in the living room as she waited for calum to get home. neveen had always thought of calum as her dad because he was the only father figure she had (besides her uncles, but that’s different).
he’d always do father-like things with her; he was there, holding cleo’s hand when neveen was born, he stayed up late to get her to fall asleep when she decided to be stubborn, he helped with night feeds, he woke up in the middle of the night to change her diaper or feed her or soothe her back to sleep, he was there when she was teething, he helped her learn to roll over, crawl, walk, and talk, he fed her her first bite of baby and solid food, he helped potty train her (they’re still working on that), calum was always there and cleo loved him for that.
she was so thankful for him, he didn’t have to step up and be a dad to someone else’s kid but he’s doing it and he’s loving every second of it. watching him take care of her baby as if she was his own sparked something inside of her. every time he walked into the room, she had butterflies in her stomach and a heat-like sensation run through her body. she was happy around him, he was everything she ever wanted in a partner. he cares about not only her but her child too, he treats not only her right but her child too, he protects not only her but her child too. calum just treats the both of them with the upmost love and respect, it’s hard not to fall for him.
neveen was waiting for him get back home so that they could watch the 10 year anniversary livestream. as always, she was waiting on the couch closest to the door watching Super Why when she heard the door nob jingle. her attention immediately turns to the door as she perks up in her seat. she scrambles off of the couch as quickly as a 4 year old could and runs to the door just as it opens. she remembers not to stand right in front of it, only a few feet away as she jumps with excitement, her beautiful brown curls matching her movements. calum already knows she’s right there, smiling once he catches sight of her.
calum let’s out a dramatic gasp once the door is completely open, opening his arms for the tiny, giggling 4 year old to run into them. neveen wraps her arms around his neck as calum picks her up off of the ground, pressing kisses after kisses onto her cheek. he turns around and notices cleo leaning against the wall with her phone out.
“are you filming this?” calum asks with the same bright grin on his face. “send it to me.”
as they’re watching the livestream, neveen’s very vocal on what she thought of it all. she laughed at the commercials and how funny luke looked with his “fluffy hair” and dress, how silly she thought calum looked in the 5sauce skit. she loved the Roast Interviewer, and the live performances, especially 2011.
at the end of the livestream, cleo picks up the three empty bags of chips and goes into the kitchen to throw them away.
“bubba, why wearing a skirt?” she asks. she was still learning how to form full sentences but they knew what she meant.
“i like wearing skirts. do i look good?” she didn’t mean to, but cleo found herself eavesdropping on their little conversation while making neveen’s lunch.
“mhm. my mommy has skirts.”
“i know, she looks very pretty in them, too.”
“bubba, you kiss mommy too?” neveen asks out of no where, probably remembering something from a few days ago. cleo suddenly stops what she’s doing, this time with the intentions of listening to their conversation.
“no, i don’t kiss mommy. where’d you get that from?”
“on the tv mommies and daddies kiss, but not bubba and mommy,” neveen points out, not really knowing how to get her thought out since she can’t really talk that well yet.
“yeah,” calum pauses, looking down at the little girl that takes up a big piece of his heart, “bubba would like to kiss mommy, but mommy might not like that.” cleo’s heart begins to beat so hard that she can hear it, she’s fighting to keep the grin off of her face.
“why not?”
“because she might not like bubba the way that i like her,” calum tells her, not explaining anymore because he is talking to a 4 year old.
“why not?”
“i don’t know, mama,” calum chuckles at her multiple questions, “i’ll ask her if you can color better than me.”
“okay!” neveen beams, excitement seeping through her at the thought of coloring with calum. she was about to run upstairs just as cleo got done making her lunch and called her into the kitchen to eat. calum walks behind her as she runs into the kitchen, only to be stopped and pushed out by cleo. before he could register what was happening, cleo’s soft, glossy lips were on his. subconsciously, he places his hands on her waist and kisses her back just as eagerly, knowing that she heard the whole conversation.
after a few seconds, the two of them pull back for air, her hands still resting on the his prickly cheeks while his are gripping her waist.
a smile creeps onto their lips as they stand with their forehead’s pressed together. after a long period of silence, cleo asks, “what are you doing tomorrow?”
it takes him a few seconds to get his thoughts together, “um, nothing.”
“good,” she replies as she pulls her head away and drags her hands down his neck and resting them on his chest, “we’re gonna have a little family picnic tomorrow after picking neveen up from school.”
calum chuckles, pulling her closer by her waist, “already planning dates, huh? a family date?”
“of course. have to make sure my daughter fancy’s you,” cleo teases, shrugging her shoulder as calum’s mouth drops.
“i think she likes me just fine!”
“yeah, yeah, whatever,” cleo rolls her eyes as she grabs a hold of calum’s hand and drags him into the kitchen to sit with their little love.

Part 1
Pairing: Calum Hood x Holland!Singer!Reader and Tom Holland x Sister!Reader
Word Count: 645 (Blurb 1/5)
A/N: I’m so nervous about posting this I’ve had the document in my computer for so long and after posting The One which I’ll link here I thought that maybe it was enough with that and I wouldn’t be writing more Tom Holland x 5SOS universe because I’m insecure and thought that maybe this wasn’t good enough but I said fuck it let’s give it a go. This is completely different fro The One and are not related at all.
MASTERLIST HERE | AU MASTERLIST HERE
Tom Holland’s sister.
A title that haunted you for at least two years of your career since you had your big break as a singer almost at the same time he got the role as spiderman though it was frustrating for both of you it never got in the way with the relationship you had with your brother and it pushed to work even harder to be known as Y/N Holland to the world not as Tom Holland’s sister. And you were more than proud to say that you left that title behind by the time you released the third album.
“Your fourth album Strangers is now available on every streaming platform and physical format” Jimmy said once you sat next to him “why did you choose that title?”
“Well, most of the songwriting was done in England whilst staying with my family during my hiatus” you explained “it was the first time my four brothers and I were together in a while and especially since I practically moved to California, I just felt like a stranger coming back home finally and strangers is also my favorite song on the album, so it made sense”
“What did you mom think about moving to California?”
“Oh! she hated it” you said, and the audience laugh “she wanted me to live with Tom and their friends she said that I could still make music back there, but I think I made the right decision with this”
“One last question before we move to your performance tonight who would you like to collaborate?”
“5 Seconds of Summer” you quickly answered “I’m obsessed with their music and they are great musicians and I think we can come up with something really good”
Atlanta’s airport busy and full of people Tom said he would pick you up at the airport. Once you found Tom in the sea of people you ran to hug him.
“Y/N!” Tom exclaimed hugging you “I’ve missed you”
“I missed you too”
“How long are you going to stay?” he asked picking up your suitcase.
“I managed to get a month off doing promo” you told him “Is Harry here?”
“He’s waiting for us outside” Tom said “I missed you so much. It’s hard not having you at home”
“Tom it’s been two years since I moved to California”
“I know but still” he shrugged “we’ve been through everything together”
You smiled at him you’d be lying if you said that leaving London had been easy, but you didn’t have regrets.
When you got to his rental house, he showed you your room and then you had a small siblings night playing videogames and board games and a couple of beers though it felt like home.
“Sorry guys” you said when you phone rang “I have to take this”
“Y/N I need you back here” Laura your agent spoke on the other line.
“But I just got to Atlanta!” you protested “you told me I had a month off from promoting the album”
“Your dream collaboration is about to come true” she replied.
“What?” your brothers looked at each other confusion in their eyes.
“5 seconds of summer saw your interview and their team called yours they are interested in doing a song with you I’m going to book you a flight to Los Angeles tomorrow morning” with that she hung up.
“Is everything alright?” Harry was the first to ask.
“Yeah I-I gotta go. Tomorrow actually” you said in a shock state “5sos wants to collab with me”
“Seriously?” Tom asked you just nodded happy tears in your eyes “I’m so fucking proud”
Tom and Harry pulled you into a hug before becoming famous 5SOS was one of the bands that kept you going it was one of your favorite bands and your family knew it. You finally were achieving one of your goals.

Ok hottie u asked and u shall receive I have a request for you So it’s sort of based on Old Me and I was thinking what if Luke is just an absolute mess, using and abusing drugs drinking every chance he gets and he turns into a monster when he’s drunk/high so his girlfriend finds out she’s pregnant and he’s like ok cool and doesn’t take it seriously until he gets a call while he’s high that she’s in labour and shows up to HIS OWN KIDS BIRTH HIGH and that’s his like turning point and gets sober
𝐋𝐔𝐊𝐄 𝐇𝐄𝐌𝐌𝐈𝐍𝐆𝐒  ⇉  old me
➢  old me by 5sos
“shout out to the old me and everything he showed me.”
you always were patient, you understood his feelings and tried to accept his actions. through all of the arguments, the break-downs, and the exits, you took it. there wasn’t an exact date you could remember the last time you had seen luke sober, you couldn’t remember his last time he came home before midnight, you couldn’t remember when he last told you he loved you, and you couldn’t remember the last time you saw him up and laughing with you while you bonded with petunia or made dinner together. you couldn’t see him as your boyfriend, you couldn’t see him and you last for much longer, nor could you see him in a few months with his child.
“never a night alone, anywhere you wanna go. woke up in the morning wearing someone else’s clothes.”
“lu, i think it’s time to come to bed now.” you murmur, hearing luke in the living room while you peered out from your room that you had just finished setting out fresh clothes for luke in. luke came in, his clothes saturated with the scent of weed and alcohol, making you grimace and scrunch your nose at the scent. you walked towards him, helping him steady his 6′4 large frame. you gave him a smile, holding onto his wrist before you felt the tug away from your grasp. your smile dropped, luke murmuring a few drowsy words before looking the other direction. “why are you acting like that? i’m trying to make sure you don’t fall, let me help you lu.” you chided, luke giving you an eye-roll in response and a cold shoulder. “i don’t need your fucking help, get off my balls.” he says, stumbling away from you while you follow him into the bedroom.
“just go.. go do something useful for once instead of standing around. fucking sick of you.” he sighs, “go!” his voice raising, which you turn for the exit and leave him alone in your room that you two used to sleep in together. the bed you used to sleep in together, the shower you two used together, and the intimate moments you two shared together in there. you took your spot on the bed in the guest room, listening to the rustling in your main bedroom. your hands would type in interviews from today, checking the feeds on social medias and seeing how he did today. it garnered a few suspicions that he was high during an interview today, which you probably could confirm he was due to the scent of him, but his glazed over eyes, slightly tinted red, it was a dead give-away. you cringed at his movements, looking at him gaze around the room with half-shut eyes.
“pictures in my phone, with people i don’t know. woke up in the morning how the hell i’d make it home.”
luke couldn’t remember the last time he’d seen you without being high or drunk, he remembered very vaguely your last conversation. you were sitting in front of him, nervous as ever. he saw the way your lip trembled, the way your eyes bubbled with tears. he barely remembered the small white plastic stick in your hands, he barely remembered when you settled a sonogram in front of him, he couldn’t remember what words you exactly told him. he couldn’t remember what you described the future as. luke could remember the look settled in your eyes, fear and anxiety. luke could remember how he was high, luke definitely remembered him shrugging it off and telling you that this was fine. he could hardly remember the thoughts that ran through his head at the thought of being a father. he could remember when it turned bitter though, he remembered the large tear in your relationship.
“and they wondered how long i could keep it up. while i wondered if i’d ever, if i’d ever get enough.”
settled on the couch, finally having a decent moment with luke, seeing his soft interior and as-well as the rest of your friends were over. you let the silence float between you two, sipping on a glass of water while you heard the small chatter. you spoke up, “so, i don’t know if luke has told you guys. i don’t really know much anymore but, there should be a new hemmings in a few months.” which garnered the surprised reactions, feeling a bit anxious. they never really spoke to you about luke, not wanting to make it seem like they were there to be friends with you due to the fact that you were his girlfriend, but they didn’t want to say anything wrong. especially with the way that luke was acting now, they didn’t want to talk about his sobriety to you.
“so, i was thinking about him and maybe like, therapy? i honestly don’t know, rehab?” you admitted, the air around you all becoming thick. you knew that maybe it wasn’t the best to discuss this with his friends but, you felt about wits end with this. you so desperately wanted to help him, you wished you could help him yourself, but this wasn’t for you to fix no matter how much you loved him. they could tell your heart was in the right place, but they also didn’t know you as well as luke’s other girlfriends. they very vaguely heard about you, now hearing about this future hemmings, it was a bit odd. “well, whatever is best. we’ve seen these past few months to an extent, so y’know you talk to him about that. i don’t think i have any room to talk about him.” ashton explains, calmly which was nice compared to the glares that you were receiving from michael and calum.
“and i did some shit i never should have done. i would do it over now, i’d do it over.”
“understand what i’m saying lu, this isn’t you. none of this is you!” you shouted, a migraine and stress pulsing through your head while you argued with luke. “i’m not trying to make you feel like a crazy person or a bad person, you just need help.” you explain, seeing luke’s pacing in the living room while you were settled on the sofa. your hand was nestled on your bump, luke sighing. he shakes his head, “no fucking way. i’m not going to fucking rehab! not for my fans, not for my friends, not for my family, and especially not for fucking you.” he goes on and on, stopping in front of you before taking his leave to the nursery which you followed him to. you stopped in the doorway to your heart dropping, there was the first sonogram you ever had, the glass cover attached to the frame shattered and crumbled to shards on the floor.
luke’s hand swiped to push off the abundance of onesies, socks, and hats on top of the drawer, neatly placed and folded. the two stuffed animals were shoved off, his hands dug into the drawers and practically almost tore the wooden boxes from the frame of the drawer. more clothes were on the floor, surrounding luke while he ranted and let out his feelings. “don’t you see? don’t you see i don’t care? just get the fuck out, don’t.. don’t call me until you’re ready to stop controlling my life.” he shouted, your hands dropping to your sides before you gave him a shrug. you turned around, looking at the mess, everything you planned by yourself and the hopes of turning to a new leaf with him. you sighed, “hope you’re happy luke hemmings, you have quite the life.” with that, luke watched you walk out. you walked out with a heavy heart and the feeling that you had failed as a mother.
“another round here we go, going in blow for blow. look into the mirror take the punches that i throw.”
luke received your call that day, so fresh from one of his new friend’s house, high as sky is the limit, he made it down there and was met with his friends with their girlfriend’s who were in the waiting room. he saw the looks from them, he saw the disappointment in their eyes and the almost pitiful glance. “she’s uh.. room 456 with ash and kaykay.” calum murmured, looking everywhere but luke’s worn appearance and his glazed over eyes. he nodded and mumbled a thank you which calum didn’t acknowledge or respond to. while luke was in the elevator, he suddenly could remember what you told him, he could remember you telling him you loved him and how you were afraid of doing this all alone. he could remember your lingering hand on his own, luke remembered the soft tone that was almost as sweet as honey and as soft as rain. he remembered the tears that came down on your porcelain skin as if raindrops were hitting a glass pane window. he remembered his careless tone, his careless words as if he didn’t care. he remembered the day you left, it was him. when he saw himself and he thought about himself, he didn’t want that. god, he was the problem, wasn’t he? how could he live with himself, knowing he was pushing away the sliver of hope for him. he was pushing away everything that mattered to him, he felt disgusted, disgusted he turned to this person.
with the elevator coming to a halt, luke walking up to the front desk in the maternity ward, checking in. his hands pulled the door open, the sound of the heartbeat, the warbling noise, it was comforting. there was ashton, bed-side while kaykay sat in a chair next to them on standby. “hey.” luke breathed out, all of their heads picking up to look at his voice filling their ears. “hey luke.” ashton responded, giving him a monotone type response. luke was captivated by you though, this was probably his least haziest moment he had with her this whole year. your hair was pulled back and your body covered in a white sheet, your bump covered by the hospital gown. your hand was in ashton’s own, multiple needles going into your hand. you smiled at him, quickly breaking eye contact and focusing on the wall behind him. “i can take it from here. i can handle this shit.” luke murmured, taking steps forward to the bed where ashton was at. ashton brushes him off, “never said you couldn’t alright? we’ll go back to the waiting room.” ashton says, kaykay nodding in response and suddenly the room felt smaller. luke watched the exit, pulling the chair up next to the side of the bed.
“i’m constantly reminded of all the compromises, by the people from my past who have a hard time letting go.”
the next few hours of small bickering, then the long and painful hour of the pushing, luke held your hand. luke gave small whispers of encouragement, his lips only centimetres away from your ear. the moment you heard the cheers, your head resting against the pillow while you silently cried and you smiled when you heard the words, “it’s a baby girl!” the small baby girl placed against your chest, now hearing the loud cries from her. luke could’ve sworn he would drop dead at the sight of you, the mother of his child, and his daughter only minutes old on your chest. he saw the disappointed look on your face when you had to hand her over to the nurses to be checked out, pressing a kiss to your lips for the first time in months. your breath hitched when it happened, luke having the feeling that you didn’t love him anymore, and he didn’t blame you. he couldn’t, not after the way her treated you, not after you stayed until luke made you leave.
his hands could barely even cut her umbilical cord with the surgical scissors, trembling hands from the mixture of anxiety and him slowly sobering up, also the thought that maybe she could feel the cutting of the cord, he slowly cut before hearing the little applause from the nurses. he regretted it all, he felt the regret when he heard she was seven pounds and four ounces, he regretted it when he he saw her little squirm in the cot. luke regrettted staying away when he washed her, cleaning the identical blonde curls that he had. he regretted these past nine months because it took him so long to appreciate it before it was gone. he heard the soft gurgles that escaped from her lips, feeling her chubby soft cheek pressed against the crook of his neck.
luke pressed a kiss to her head, feeling the identical blonde curls brush against his lips. when he handed over the little girl, looking at the two of you together. his heart sunk, he had spent nine agonizing months of arguing and pushing you away, he spent no time learning about his daughter.
“devil at my door, got me knockin’ knockin’ knockin’ on the other side.”
luke daintily held your hands, sniffling while you were crouched in front of him. he lately had been struggling after detox, scared of going back to his ways. he had closed the door behind him in the bathroom, you hearing the clattering of a few objects but finished feeding your daughter and then putting her down before you could go check on luke. there he was, sitting on the floor with his head between his knees while you heard incoherent murmurs from his chapped lips. his hands trembled and your feet made contact from the smooth hardwood to the cold, hard tiled flooring. “lu?” you called out, now in this position.
“i’m sorry, i’m sorry. i can’t- i’m scared. i don’t want to want it anymore, i need help. i’m scared.” he rambled, concealing his face with his hands. your hands slowly and gently pulled at his own, moving them away from his face. there were the bags underneath his eyes, the tears stinging and staining his eyes red. they slowly made their way down his pale, porcelain skin. your fingers made their way to brush them away, your lips pressing against his cheek. “i’m proud of you.” you breathe out, seeing luke’s blue eyes light up and stare back at you. there was the embarrassment, the anger, and the sadness behind his eyes.
“i know this is hard lu, but i’m proud of you. i don’t expect you to recover easily, but just you being able to go to detox and you coming in here instead of letting yourself lose control. it shows me that i know you’re getting progress, this all is going to take baby steps. luckily we have a very cute daughter, we also have time. we have people, people who will support you and aide you during this. soon you’ll be okay, i may not know for sure, but time will tell us both. i wanna show you something.” you finish, helping luke up from the floor and letting him take hold of your hand while you two went back to the living room.
“look at her, she’s you lu. she’s all yours, that came from you.” you murmured, taking him down to the floor and picking up your daughter from her spot. luke slowly took his spot next to you, his head laying against your shoulder. there she was, his light, his motivation to make a change in himself. she let out a soft coo, hand clutching to his point finger that he held out for her.
“we’re in this together lu, us three.”
“ashes on the floor, but i’m walkin’ walkin’ walkin’ outta here alive.”
