Calligraphy people who have more experience with calligraphy inks than me:
What are your suggestions on good beginner-friendly calligraphy inks? I've been using whatever I have on hand and I'm finding that I don't really like using fountain pen inks with my calligraphy nib. My preference is for darker colors, but honestly any colors are fine!

(not a request)
hello! i am a fellow novice calligrapher and i have a question that concerns a dip pen i have. if you're not looking to give advice right now, that's totally okay!
so i am trying to write with the waterman "serenity blue" ink using a dip pen with a wide-ish nib (i don't remember the exact size, probably around 2.5mm), but when i try to write with it sometimes, no ink flows out. i have been swirling the tip of the nib in the cap of the ink bottle just to get some of the left over ink onto the nib because, when there is already wet ink on the page, it writes perfectly. i am not explaining this very well.
here is a 2-minute video of me misspelling "porridge" as "porride" with the offending phenomenon.
the attachment wasn't working so i uploaded it to youtube
any advice (or non-advice) you have would be much appreciated!
thanks and have a good day!
Absolutely happy to advise!
Two things immediately spring to mind:
The first, and most common issue, is that your nib could use some more cleaning. To properly diagnose this I’d need to see the underside of the nib and how the ink is behaving - is it give you a nice even coating of ink, or pooling up and just sliding off?
The second (and possibly more likely in this case given how your first couple letters seem fine) is that this is just how dip nibs behave.
Now, I’m not saying they should completely stop working, but you kinda have to nudge them to get the ink flowing. This can either be a little sideways movement (look at how the P and o seemed to work mostly fine) or setting the nib down and waiting for a sec before starting the stroke if you don’t want a serif.
I haven’t done intense study of calligraphy, but I would not be surprised if this behavior is *why* hands like italic have the little starting serif - because that’s just what it takes to get the ink flowing.
Hopefully this helps - if anything didn’t make sense, let me know and I’ll find better resources/do a video.

@theshitpostcalligrapher I'm sorry I can't find the thread to ask as a comment, but I need to know about the dots connoting the ends of each word. I've created a runic alphabet for a story I'm writing which has the same system with a symbol meaning a different word begins, and I would like to know if there was a calligraphic or historical context why you did it; seeing how a lot of your work seem to be medieval and gothic inspired.

Silly doodle to relax as I wrap up the year! I saw one of those planters and thought Dazai would definitely have that on a t-shirt.
Atsushi doesn't seem to like it though 😂

one of the many ways which life is so unfair and cruel to me is that i do not have cool spidery elegant handwriting . in heaven (where i will go after i reanimate reagan's corpse just to kill him again) everything i write will look like field notes from a lesbian dowager with a suspicious interest in poisonous botany . and between the maddened sapphic scrawlings in the margins (where i am writing poetry about birds and nuts) there will be little watercolor diagrams of flowers also. and oh gosh so fine these little flowers will be

HOW TO DO NEOGRAPHY WELL
Step 1: Base lines.
Tumblr media
Aka guidelines. Just do an unfilled rectangle and stack it on itself twice.
Step 2: Basic calligraphy
Choose your brush. Different brush shapes have different dynamics, and different dynamics will wield different results on paper.
Best experienced on actual paper, for digital programs cannot give you the exact right feel of drag when you try to do wrong strokes. Usually, if you write by hand on paper, and it's feeling effortless, then you're doing it right.
Cheat sheet for brush tips of different kinds:

Step 3: The execution
You might want to try asemic writing at first, or take inspiration from other writing systems that already exist. Know that it is nigh impossible to create something that never existed before, for your writing system will always bear similarity to at least a dozen others.
There are multiple methods of making scripts,
Engineered
You set up a goal and plan things up before setting up the canons. Usually used for featural scripts.
Post-asemic
Make an asemic array of symbols and assign them Latin equivalents.
Monogramic
Make a monogram - some complex symbol with lots of strokes - and break it into lesser shapes erasing some of the original strokes. Similar to the Combinatorics method. Example below:
Tumblr media
Combinatoric
Make particles, combine in different ways. See below:

Natural evolution simulation
Following the pipeline "pictogram" -> "letter". As seen below:

Other useful tips:
Omniglot.com: go there and take a look at how many writing systems are there in the world. This site stores lots of conscripts as well, and you can submit yours if you want to!
r/neography is a huge subreddit that has everything about neography (aka the art of creating new writing systems).
Learn about what kinds of writing systems there are. Basically they are categorized by how much information a symbol carries. It could be one sound, a syllable, or whole words. Though there are nuances, explained on r/neography's wiki, by the way.
Practice. Doodle a lot. You will get the grip of it eventually.
There are 26 letters in the English alphabet. The middle is between M and N, as M is letter #13. If you include numerals, that's 36 symbols. If you include punctuation, that's about 48 symbols depending on how much punctuation you want.
I have a sideblog called @thecrazyneographist meant just for neography, and all the scripts posted there are free to use per request!
Have fun :D

Assalamualaikum tumblees!
My friend sent me this picture and I wanted to share my thoughts on it.
Sometimes we may feel lost or uncertain about what to do, but Allah ﷻ sends people to guide us and show us the way.
I'm referring to the difficult years of 2020 and 2021, during which we lost many loved ones. I too felt lost and helpless during this time, until I stumbled upon the work of a calligraphy artist named Abdullah. Despite being an artist myself, I never expected to find such comfort and assistance through my hobby. I discovered Abdullah Bro's work while randomly scrolling through Instagram, where his name appeared in my suggestion list. Upon exploring his page, I was captivated by his beautiful calligraphy and learned that a friend of mine also followed him. His art was a source of solace during a difficult time.
As a fan of calligraphy, I was drawn to his work more and more. He used to create calligraphy pieces featuring motivational quotes that uplifted me during difficult times.
After all these years, my friend and I are still in touch. I am grateful to Allah ﷻ for bringing him as a light into my life during dark times. Alhamdulillah!
The moral of the story is to never lose hope in Allah's mercy.
