okay okay so now that i’m finished here are my Actual thoughts alskcjejenbrhdisk:

i wish! that more of the book! was focused on roman & neo together and their friendship!! like i get that the first half was important bc they needed to show Just How Alone they both were before each other. but i would’ve gladly traded some of the beginning stuff for just a little more time with the two of them together. like maybe condense some of that and give us a few more anecdotes from their time training together?? just to show the development from wary partners to ride-or-die a little more. but idk. because the first half of the book felt a little slow for me but as soon as i got to the back half i could NOT put it down!!!!!!!!

i owe this writer (& the rwby writers ofc) my heart and soul and also probably my spleen. first cfvy, now roman & neo???? taking characters i didn’t have any strong feelings about but giving them personality and history and love and making ME love them???? AND WRITING FRIENDS/FAMILY SO WELL???? bro. BRO. i’m losing my MIND

ALSO. very excited for neo’s role in v9 now. and will also probably cry.

like. it would’ve been so easy for them to make roman & neo romantic. especially since there’s only like a 4 year age gap. but they DIDNT they let those two BE EACH OTHERS FIRST PRIORITY AND CLOSEST FRIEND AS FRIENDS AND I AM SO ECSTATIC ABT IT HOLY SHIT

Barbie Princess and the Pauper

I want to talk about what might be the greatest movie ever created: Barbie the Princess and the Pauper. I’ve been in love with this movie since I was three years old, aka when it came out, as you can propably tell. Beware that spoilers are below.

Barbie movies tend to get a lot of shit in the media, mostly for not being inclusive seeing as the characters generally are white and thin, and I don’t mean to invalidate those issues because I do see them. However, in this ’essay’ I want to tell the story of why they, especially the princess and the pauper, are still such amazing and nurturing stories. I’ll focus on what parts I think makes it such a story and perhaps you’ll find ways to incorporate them into your own stories, or at the very least be inspired by them.

In case there is anyone who hasn’t seen the movie I’ll summarize it;

Barbie is Princess Anneliese, only child of the Queen to a kingdom who is running out of money. Their main income has always been there gold mines but they have secretly been emptied by the Queen’s advisor, Preminger, as he wants to force the Queen to marry him (so that he will be king) to gain access to his immense wealth (the gold from the mines). The Queen choses to arrange a marriage between Anneliese and a neighbouring rich King, Dominick, instead. Erika on the other hand is a poor seamstress who dreams of being a singer but is stuck paying of a loan that her parents took from an evil dressshop owner. Both her and Anneliese are driven by their sense of duty and when they by chance meet and realize that they’re identical except for their haircolours and a birthmark they instantly become friends. Before Anneliese and Dominick can meet, Preminger kidnaps Anneliese and makes it look as if she has run away to avoid the marriage. Erika pretends to be Anneliese in order to keep the proposal available and thus save the kingdom while Julian, the man Anneliese actually wants to marry, tries to find her. As you’ve probably figured it eventually ends well with Preminger imprisoned and the arranged marriage called off. During her capture, Anneliese is held in the mines for sometime and realize that the stones in it are actaully jewels so they don’t need Dominick’s money anymore and she can marry Julian instead.

Now, as for why this is an amazing story:

• The friendship between Anneliese and Erika. When they first meet Erika is singing in the street as she tries to earn money to pay off her debt, Anneliese gives her a bit off money and they start talking. They are both shocked when they see that they’re practically identical and start talking about their lives. It quickly becomes apparent that neither is satisfied with their current lives, Erika doesnt want to work as a seamstress and Anneliese doesn’t want to marry King Dominick. What I personally love the most about this scene is that it’s Erika who points out their similarities, despite how obvious it is that Anneliese lives a much more privileged life. I think that it shows what a caring and emphatic character Erika is that she is able to see through that and still see their similarities. Later on in the movie, it is ultimately their friendship and the lenghts they go for each other as well as their senses of duty that saves the kingdom.

•The pets. While the humans fight against Preminger, Anneliese’s cat Serafina and Erika’s cat Wolfie both go above and beyond to help them as well as get their own character arcs. The most obvious of them being how Wolfie comes to terms with the fact that he barks instead of meowing like normal cats. Serafina’s arc is more subtle, she is very strong and confident throughout the entire movie but if you pay attention it becomes apparent that she becomes less vain throughout due to the rough situations she goes through to save Anneliese. The two of them even get their own enemy in the shape of Preminger’s arrogant dog. Oh, and Wolfie and Serafina also fall in love and have a litter with super cute kittens!

•King Dominick. When he is first introduced, he has disguised himself as a servant because he wants to see what it’s like when they don’t know that he is king. This speaks to the fact that he doesn’t want to marry just anyone, he actually cares about the person and not the title. His first meeting with ’Anneliese’ is actually Erika and it is clear that be becomes smitten. Shortly after he hears her sing to Wolfie in her quarters when she thinks that she’s alone and that only strenghtens his feelings for her. Later on in the movie when it is revelead by Preminger that Erika is an imposter, Dominick refuses to believe the lies he spews about her and Julian and even goes so far as to assist Erika when she flees from the dungeon. Even after he knows that Erika isn’t the princess he thought that she was he still wants to marry her regardless, showing again that it isn’t the crown or power he loves. That creates a powerful opposition to Preminger btw who does everything out of deisre for power and status. Erika originally turns down his proposal as she wishes to travel the world and try her chance at singing now that she is finally free from her debt to the shopowner, still Dominick continues to love and support her. He waits patiently for months until she returns and only then do they live happily ever after together.

•Now that I’ve talked about Dominick I simply have to gush about Julian as well. He’s the servant who fell maddly in love with the princess despite knowing that they couldn’t be together. He knows Anneliese so well that he realizes she is kidnapped based on the SCENT of the letter ’Anneliese’ aka Preminger left claiming that she had run away. I mean, anyone who recognizes the fricking scent of your letters is instantly marriage material. He then goes out of his way to bring Erika to the castle and teach her how to act like Anneliese so that the marriage arrangement doesn’t fall through, a marriage that would have no doubt broken his heart but he still fights for it because he knows that Anneliese would never want to see their kingdom fall apart even if it means that she will have to sacrifice herself. He is selfless and supports Anneliese constantly, his love for her is complete and incredibly beautiful. When Anneliese confeses her love to him in the mines he still can’t believe it despite that he is such a wonderful person and that makes him very human to me.

•Preminger. I hate the man, but I love the character. His only motivation is power and that is something I find incredibly realistic now that I’ve grown up. He doesn’t care for either Anneliese or the Queen despite trying to get them both to marry him, which becomes extremly clear when he tries to murder Anneliese and Julian out of his own convinience. Preminger is actually quite smart and strategical and if not for the fact that his two goons are complete morons [Noun: loving] he might have actually succeeded. Don’t get me started on those two, they are so ridicolously comedic that I can’t handle it.

•The soundtrack. I’m a sucker for music in general, especially in children’s movies but the songs in this one are my favorite. They’re emotional and raw and play in extremly well with Erika’s ambitions to become a singer once she is free to live her life as she wishes. She, for example, uses a song to lull her prisonguard to sleep in order to escape which is not only clever but also teaches kids that words are powerful.

•I could continue ranting about this movie forever but I’m going to conclude by talking about how strong both Anneliese and Erika are. I’ve mentioned previously how responsible they are because of their duties but I want to evolve further on why they are such amazing role models. Anneliese doesn’t just do the right thing when she thinks that she has to, when mistaken for Erika and locked in by the shopowner Erika works for she helps the other seamstress with the dresses because Anneliese simply refuses to let her do them all by herself. And Erika, she shows that you can follow your dreams even if you fall in love and that sometimes taking risks is worth it. Erika stepped in as Anneliese despite knowing that if caught she would be tried for treason and possibly executed, but she did it for her friend and for her kingdom. Back to Anneliese, when she was stuck and left to die in a mine she kept calm, found a way to save her kingdom, confessed her love to her best friend (Julian) and came up with a genius idea that saved their lives. If those things don’t scream bad ass female role models to you I don’t know what to tell you.

I mean, I don’t really know how this applies to the fandom now, but it’s definitely anime fans and most yoichi fans. I just, I wanted to watch a yoichi amv because I was working on Yoichi stuff but like. I could not find a SINGLE one that was even voiced by a guy?

Now, in general, that’s not an issue, just because he’s a guy obviously doesn’t mean that he can’t have a girl song because that would be dumb to say so. But that’s just not something I see for anyone else. When I see Mika or Guren or Yu centric amvs and stuff, there’s plenty of edgy boi songs and shit. Sometimes Mika gets sexy bitch songs as a joke, but when they��re actually trying to be about that character, they’re all songs sung by dudes.

Yes we’ve established that Yoichi isn’t a smol baby bean boi so fucking stop, a lot of people just kinda ignore that but even without the manga, even without taking into consideration a single thing he said in chapter 51 onwards, the way that the fandom likes to see him is just... not right.

Jupiter’s response pretty much sums it up but basically it boils down to

1. fangirls who see yoichi, think “gay”, and think they know his entire character because of a stereotype, honestly this was probably something to do with kagami, I feel like I’ve heard around for a long time Yu was supposed to have a fucking harem like guren and they just basically never developed yoichi beyond ‘clearly is gay for yu as a plot point for like three episodes before forgetting about him after school arc’

2. The fans basically just thinking that he just ✨ tried harder ✨ not to have trauma and now he’s fucking fine, I was glad to see that wasn’t the case but people don’t understand how or why it happened, I’ll gladly explain

3. People forget so easily how terrible he had it. It’s not just “gay boy fucking mans up” it’s “gay boy is consistently told for eight years that he’s completely useless if he can’t kill things and every trait he has is terrible because it’s weak and associated with gayness so he internalizes that to an unhealthy degree”

I mean, I’ll try to explain how I see his character, but yeah.

Back to my “I don’t understand how people were suprised when Yoichi admitted he would have killed himself if Yu hadn’t showed up” point... do you remember what he was like back in school arc?

He was not ok. Bro, that guy was so soft and scared. He didn’t want to hurt or offend anyone. He didn’t want to get into any conflict and his first instinct was to submit to abuse or run away. He was desperate for validation and friendship, and he fell for things like bullying easily because he wouldn’t fight back and he wanted someone to like him so bad. He didn’t really want to be in the army, he was glad he got saved even if his sister didn’t make it, he didn’t truly want revenge. Obviously he wasn’t over it, but he didn’t think “boy howdy do I want to kill a vampire”.

The only reason that he got so stuck on that was because it’s been pounded into his head from moment one. He got called every manner of weak, weakling, wuss, crybaby you can think of by not just shitty high schoolers but by authority figures. They live in a militarized society where your worth is determined by your physical and mental strength, so people with disabilities, mental illnesses, shit like that- they’re not doing so hot. Their way of dealing with Kids Have Trauma is “get over it” or “seek revenge against the vampires who did it”. This is actually a thing Kureto stated very clearly at the beginning of resurrection when he gave his dumbass speech to a bunch of traumatized 11 year olds right after the catastrophe. He’s weaponizing a bunch of kids by putting all these ideas into their head- giving them all fucking hero and martyr complexes because it makes them better soldiers. He tells them that they should want to get revenge and they should be strong and suck it up and use strong emotions against them.

So Yoichi basically grew up conditioned to absolutely fucking hate himself because that’s the ideal. He isn’t like that, and so he sees Yu who is basically the shining example of that kind of thinking, at that point in time. Basically just toxic masculinity central. He’s aggressive and strong, is much quicker to pull a sword on someone than hold out a hand, doesn’t want to make friends, he’s serious and dead set on revenge, he doesn’t cry in front of people and he uses his trauma as a weapon. Yu’s actually a total dick at the beginning of the story, to be honest, and I was surpised to find out the shit he said straight to Yoichi’s face. “give up” “weaklings like you would only get in the way” “nice guys like you shouldn’t be here” “we’re not here to make friends” basically telling him to suck it up or leave, bro, the dude was a fucking jackass to Yoichi, and Yoichi internalizes everything these people say to him, he believes every terrible thing people say.

And Yoichi still completely idolizes him because that’s everything Yoichi isn’t, as this obviously queer coded side character, and everything Yoichi is told he’s supposed to be. *clears throat* toxic masculinity

So in the beginning of the story Yoichi aspires to people like Yu and Kimizuki who are very,,, not open with their emotions. Gee whiz I wonder why he’s keeping up this facade to all his friends instead of trying to sit down and talk about how fucked up he is now. But let’s now talk about how Yoichi got to be the way he is now.

People, again, seem to think that when he got a demon he just decided to stop being traumatized or something, that he just finally got the strength to deal with that and it wasn’t a problem again because he gained confidence. But uh... remember what actually snapped him out of being possessed? You’d immediately go to Yu, but when Yu said all those idealistic things about friendship, Yoichi was still pointing his weapon at Yu. What actually stopped him?

Right after that, it was Guren telling him that becoming a demon was the equivalent to running away and hiding. (which, well, guren, I have a few things to say about that but)

He didn’t stop having those internalized ideals, the things he’d been told over years didn’t just go away or suddenly work at “fixing” him. He was just accused another time of being weak. He didn’t get over or resolve his trauma in any way, he just found a different way to deal with it, with a demon. The reason this actually works for him is that if you’ve literally ever looked closely at the times Yoichi interacts with demon stuff, he’s very innately talented at it, which is odd. He was completely immune to Guren’s test, he came back from being possessed out of sheer force of will, he learned manifestation by himself, he talks to his demon like he’s the one that Gekkouin should be scared of. He finally found something he was good at, that made him strong, and boy, he really clung to that one. He found a way to make himself the ideal they all wanted: in control, powerful, an asset to the team, stuck on revenge and without hesitation to kill- even if it’s not really something he should aspire to be. He just hides the fact that it’s a problem even more because it’s not something he’s supposed to talk about. because. toxic masculinity-

And so if you realize that, it’s not very surprising to see that reveal coming the whole time.

Simply put, if you liked yoichi, y’all should have realized he was never ok. Boy’s got issues. He’s a really complex character that, well, kagami kind of fails to do justice, but the fandom just kind of warps into smol uwu bean boi I could go on but my brain isn’t working so take this

Finally Finished COM And

I’ve been putting this off writing this so my thoughts and feelings are bit less strong but, I liked it, I really liked it. I think it was a great follow up to the first and now I’m definitely invested.

Alright, just want to start off with; I’ve grown to like Celaena. A lot. I’m putting emphasis on this because in the first book her character frustrated me a lot at times. But the way she acts in the second book kinda pieces together why she acts the way she does and it just makes sense??

Oh and the whole fae thing I kinda expected since I saw spoilers on the wiki so I wasn’t exactly surprised. I mean it makes sense ig, Elena did mention a “blood bond” between them and the whole mark thing. Though I like how it works, she doesn’t like it/wasn’t able to control it and once magic disappeared so did the transformations--excluding whenever she goes to places where magic still exists.

As for other spoilers I knew, the “Dorian has magic!” still wowed me even if I knew it would happen and Nehemia’s death did not happen the way I anticipated it would (which not sure how to feel about her kicking the bucket because of fate, but ah well it’s dead and done).

I absolutely love love love how the world building continued while adding onto knowledge we already had TOG. The lore in this reminds me of why fantasy’s my favourite genre loll. Speaking of which-

Baba Yellowlegs! Such cool chapters, and the fact she knew Dorian was the prince but didn’t tell him so, agh such a conniving witch. She’s terrifying but I loved her character.

And on the topic of creepy things, the trailer scene with Yellowlegs and the library scene with the monster gave me such a fright. Even when she was only just opening door after door I was anxious of what was to come lol. Glad that stuck from the first book :’)

NOW, the thing I’ve been waiting for for-- maybe midway through TOG who knows-- Chaol and Celaena! Already I was rooting for them because they held so much chemistry, but I am so so glad that sjm didn’t just mush them together and leave it at that. Sure might’ve been a bit of a slow burn, but they developed! an! actual! bond! And that to me is just the best thing to read in romance because then every moment they spend together feels real and if ever they get in a life or death situation (*cough cough* when chaol gets kidnapped) it feels genuine when they risk everything or say things like “I would risk anything for you”, because in too many books it feels sO not genuine and makes you wonder ‘do you really feel that? or are you just saying that cause-’

Anyway, sorry for the rant but I just loved them together lol. Which makes the scene where she tries to kill him, post nehemia’s death and even the dock scene so much more saddening to read. But also interesting. Each time Chaol discovers more about what she is we can see how he’s conflicted (as the captain of the guard and all) and yet each time he never betrays her because of who she is, a lover, and someone who he just cares so deeply about (I mean going back to Anielle, damn).

I never really expected the Archer twist. I mean, we were first led to believe he was completely harmless because of how Celaena couldn’t even fathom him being part of some rebellion. Then we find out he is, but he’s so manipulative he uses the convenience of Nehemia’s death to make himself look like the good guy. And THEN we find out he was behind Nehemia’s assassination?? w O AH (+ the whole “don’t trust (archer’s tattoo)” was a cute little plot point if you can call it such).

This is getting long so I think I’ll end it soonnn.

Dorian and Celaena’s friendship is so cute, though I’m sorry couldn’t help but laugh at “The sight of his feet felt slightly intimate”, w hat.

Things I’m anticipating in Heir of Fire (I’ve already a 30 ish pages in but anyway):

- What happened to Roland and Kaltain? (I know they’re being used in Meah or whatever that place is that starts with an M, but what will become of them?)

- Also is Roland reaaally a good person? (He still gives me bad vibes, seems a bit too fishy that he suddenly began supporting Dorian. For all we know he could’ve been controlled by the king)

- What motivations does the king have? Is it really just about the power or is there something else as well?

- Chaol finding out more about the Wyrdkeys and secretly going against the king (hoping he might take action with the rank he recently regained, will he use the resources from Anielle to somehow help slaves/rebels?)

- Hollin! I want to know more about him. Will he have magic too? Will that cause Dorian to become closer to his brother as result? Will that cause Hollin to be less of a whiny jerk?

- Chaol and Celaena getting back together. Though the COM endlessly mentions how the ‘hope of a future together is gone’ and all that, I’m still hoping they get back together lol. Though in HOF their is this one guy Rowan who I’ve seen mentioned a lot and I feel like he’ll become a new love interest (not that I’m too keen on that yet since there’s been like 0 interaction to date :’)).

- Chaol being protected by the Eye of Elena

- Dorian taking care of Fleetfoot

So those are my thoughts and feelings! I tried to talk about everything as much as I could but so so much happened it dragged on for a bit. Now to return to reading Heir of Fire.

besides a whole lot of screaming,,,

you had a great time with chae’s friends

they were whole crackheads but very nice and welcoming

as it seems they all have a passion for art, specially music and dance

three of them were even a soundcloud rap trio JSJDJ

it was amazing how besides being over 20 people they all were so close,,,

and you felt like two worlds had just collapsed yk??

you were very close with chae but she never met any of your friends, it felt like you only knew each other by text and in arts class and whatever life you had outside it was a completely different world

and seeing her surrounded by her friends was a completely different thing

and you liked seeing that side of her tbh

so you started having lunch with her more often

and you really liked it

you were getting closer with her and her friends who were amazing people

and you also grew used to the burn that would burst into your chest every now and then when you hang out with them

even though sometimes it was too strong

when chaeyoung smiled it was too strong

when she’d hug you or hold your hand it was too strong

it made you feel like you going in a strawberry field with her and just shower her face with kisses

but then she’d get close to another friend of yours and you’d feel,,, empty

like you weren’t enough

literally wtf did this girl do to you—

time went by and it was time to present your projects in art class

you drew two planets smiling to each other to represent your friendship with chae and were very curious to know what she had drawn

“Alright class, it’s time to let your partner know what you’ve drawn, I’ll give you sometime to talk to each other before giving me the drawings”

you turned to chae and you could feel your whole body shaking

“I’ll go first!” she says excitedly, calming you down

she shows you her drawing of an angel with a dress covered in painting

“I drew you as an angel because you’re always so nice and never judge anyone and always try to do good, the painting on the dress symbolizes how you are different from others and how you are creative and out of the box in contradiction to the image of the angel all perfect and dressed in white! I thought it’d be a good way to represent you since you came into my life sorta like a blessing or an angel and we got together through art...”

you were blushing at this point

did she just—

she just??

yes she just!!!!

“that’s so sweet of you omg thank you!”

you smiled whole heartedly

this made a blush make its way into her face too

“o-ok, your turn!!!”

“oh yes!!! uhm,, I drew two planets to represent our friendship since we seem to be so different and be from completely different worlds, but they are smiling at each to show how we got together and love each other besides the distance”

“that’s so sweet omg” she gave you a small smile “b-but, do you actually think we’re that different and distant?”

“what do you mean?”

“ the planets, you said they represent us because we’re from completely different worlds but... I never found us that different you know? and the planets.... they’re smiling at each other but still have so much space separating them, do you think we’re that far from each other...?”

“I... never thought of it that way..... I 100% didn’t mean it that way... I don’t think we’re distant, I actually feel like you’ve got to a place in me that no one else ever did.... but I always saw your reality as something so different from my own and meeting your friends, for example, made me realize it you know??”

“you... you d-don’t like them?”

she looked so sad as she said it, her eyes on the table and not on you and her stutter just made it all more obvious

“of course I do! but I’ve never been with someone like you and them, you are so unique and different from anything I’ve seen before... and I’m glad I got the chance to meet you and see your way of viewing things, but I still somehow feel like I don’t belong with you and them you know?”

“I see......”

she was still looking down, and she kept herself that way until the bell rung

when you were already heading to the exit of the class you hear her

“Y/n!!”

you turn around to see chaeyoung, this time facing you

“you said you felt like you didn’t belong with us, but.... I want to show you you do!”

“what do you mean?”

“would you mind coming with me after lunch tomorrow?”

“sure, but where?”

“you’ll understand better later! I promise!”

so the next day you couldn’t stop thinking about what was going to happen

you were nervous alright! you didn’t even know if anyone else was coming or if it was going to be just the two of you

you didn’t even know where you were going

so when chaeyoung meets you at the door of the canteen aLONE and takes your hand you’re just—

shaking

you’re shaking a lot

and she noticed it, but didn’t say anything to not make you uncomfortable

instead she just smiled your way and kept walking somewhere

you crossed streets and walked a lot to the point when your legs even hurt

and then she stops on start of a random narrow street

“we’re here!!” she says proudly

“where are we exactly?”

“well,,, I don’t know exactly but I usually come here with the dudes”

she starts walking through the street

“and as you can see, we like to leave marks of our presence”

you start following her and looking at the walls

you were shocked

they were covered in some random phrases (inside jokes within the group you suppose) and paintings

and when you start getting to the end of the street you see it

it’s a big drawing of you, with cat ears

damn they really couldn’t let the furry thing go away could they?

chaeyoung caught you staring at it and stands next to you

“that one... is my painting, I did it and if I’m being honest I never even thought you’d see it”

“it’s amazing! you’re so talented chae!!!”

she looked down and smiled to herself

“it’s easy to do a beautiful piece when the model is as beautiful as one can be”

you blush, it was already something usual when you were around her

chaeyoung was amazing in so many ways, she was talented and nice and pretty and funny and oh god

“Y/N”

you turn to her to face a more serious chae

“be a part of my world, please”

“w-what do you mean with that?”

“whatever it may mean, just be a part of me, see every side of my life you could see, let our planets collide and become one, let me hold you into my harms and never let go, let me give you my heart and give me yours”

you’re unsure of what to say

you knew damn well how you felt about chaeyoung, but having her stare so directly into your eyes and saying those words

“I’d love to be a part of your world chaeyoung”

with those words chaeyoung’s seriousness breaks into a warm smile before taking you in a tight hug

she looks you in the face for one second, admiring every detail of you, before getting closer and leaning for a kiss

you wanted to kiss her for so long, and so did her

you waited so long for your lips to finally meet and now? now you’re sure she’s a part of your world

in fact, you’d say she is your world

and you couldn’t be happier with that

Realistic/compelling romantic subplots

Hi! I’m @lighthearted.writer on IG and writing this is going to make me really uncomfortable but I want to cover different types of relationships I’m rambling--

Seeing as I’ve never so much as held hands with someone, don’t take my advice as rules... just things to remember :)

Aside from all the controversy that goes on around “instant-love”, there are a bunch of other aspects of a romantic relationship you should think about before writing a couple into your story. Sure, it takes a while for people to actually fall in love and create a foundation, but what goes into it afterward?

People care more about inner thoughts than outer thoughts. Your character probably wants to know why their partner is agitated or upset that day, so try to give them opportunities to take action and set their relationship with others right. People want to know what’s up.

Choices should be spread out. Not all of the power should belong to one person. Just like with any group of people, both sides of the relationship should be active. If one person isn’t taking initiative as much as the other is, then they might come off as passive or annoying to the reader. Moving forward, especially in long-lasting relationships, there will be hundreds of decisions to be made. It’s important that both of your characters are active and supportive of each other in this process.

Two people don't need to have the same likes and morals to end up together, but they should at least be a bit close. If your characters don’t share at least some of the same morals and values, readers may question why they’re together in the first place. That being said, people change over time, so you may want to think about what the future will hold for your characters.

People are vulnerable. No one should sit around and just comply with everything their friends or partner says. It isn’t healthy. Your characters might break down from stress or share a secret they shouldn’t have shared. Try to give them opportunities to open up and share what they’re really feeling. Allow them some help, for goodness’ sake. These kinds of interactions strengthen bonds. So yes, people are vulnerable, but they should also learn to be strong.

Obstacles allow for good development. They test your characters’ feeling for each other. Take long-distance relationships for example. Are your characters willing to take time out of their day to video chat with their partner, or do they only talk once a week? Do they stay loyal to each other during this time? Are they emotionally prepared to stop seeing each other for a long while?

How do your characters’ backstories affect their relationship? Did they grow up together? If so, that might try their decision to move into a full-blown romantic relationship. What about their schooling, their family, and their distance. Have they just met up after a long time of being invisible to each other? Additionally, you may not only want to think about what they’ve experienced together, but what they experienced when they were apart. If they haven’t known each other their entire life, what might be left to figure out about each other?

Not everyone in the story has to end up in a relationship. You might be writing your story with the intention to put two characters in a romantic relationship, but by the time you've reached the point in the story, you’ve realized they’d make much better friends instead. That’s totally okay, and I encourage you to do that. Far too many pairs of people just end up in a relationship that’s written poorly and without time to develop. You might decide to put two characters together, but that doesn’t mean that it needs to stay perfect. People change and leave and come back. Sometimes, they decide they want to stay apart because it’s better for both of them. How will this affect others in their lives besides themselves? Do they become more independent, or more dependent on others in their life?

“Insta-love” doesn’t exist. Rather, I wish it didn’t. I’m never going to tell you not to write (ha, double negative. Funny I call myself a writer...) two characters that have an instant connection, but you should also remember that most people don’t just walk up to each other and start flirting with each other. Some ideas to spice up your characters’ first interactions could be...

Have them both be caught in the same situation and ask each other for help or guidance. This could be done a bunch of different ways. They might part for a little while but come back to another conversation, ultimately building a friendship that can potentially be turned into a romantic relationship.

They can connect over something they both think is funny. Give them a ridiculous and unforgettable experience.

Introduce them from two different groups of people. This could mean bringing two groups of friends together or even creating some type of problem between these two groups.

Finding safety together. This can be done in almost any genre.

Don’t glorify abuse, whether it be emotional or physical. Again, I’m not going to tell you not to do anything, but you really shouldn’t. You never know what someone reading your book has been through or what they’re currently going through. If you’re writing YA (young adult), then be especially careful when writing abuse. You can include abuse, but never make it something lighthearted and not a big deal, because it is. It might take a while for your character to see that their relationship is wrong, and I think that’s when this abuse tip really comes into play. As long as abusive actions are proven wrong in literature, they may not do complete and total harm.

Above all, relationships take time. Nobody just meets on the street and immediately grabs a cup o’ tea together. Give them one experience that lasts a lifetime. Not only will they both remember it, but they’ll find their way back to each other eventually. Corrections are key.

hey stingray.. u should.. talk about.. ur opinions about how hiccup and toothless grow together as a pair over the course of the movies... and also perhaps ur thoughts (again) about how the third movie agrees with or conflicts against ur views on their friendship and their development..

the httyd films do a wonderful job when it comes to showing how hiccup has grown over the course of his friendship with toothless, and it is very heartwarming to see. toothless’ growth, however, isn’t as explicitly displayed and it is easy for many to mistake what is arguably character development / progression for character degradation / deadlock. in this essay, i aim to rectify that by pointing out a few of the many things toothless has learnt and become for the better through his friendship with hiccup.

flskdjf no but for real thank you for sending this in julie! i feel like…a lot of people equate toothless’ ‘softening’ over the years he spends in berk to Domestication™ ( he’s tamed / trained / made accustomed to humans / literally any other related word that is not ‘domesticated’, lads…i’m no expert and maybe it’s just a case of semantics but domestication is an inborn rather than acquired trait that appears over the course of many generations, lads… ) and like. it makes sense! toothless isn’t a human so him acclimatising to living with them sure would count as Domestication™ but. consider this…dragons aren’t humans…but they’re sentient…self-aware…not as much as humans maybe but they’re clearly on a similar level. that softening? to me, it’s not ‘taming’ so much as it is toothless learning that trust and empathy are just as powerful + effective as domination and apathy.

i’m not saying that toothless isn’t not, to some degree and by human definition, tamed. living in a dragon-receptive, enriching environment like berk has absolutely had some effect on things like hunting style, reactions to threats, and cognitive processes in general; the shift in focus from surviving each day to actually doing more than just surviving + the fact that environmental enrichment has been proven to promote brain activity through increased synaptogenesis means toothless literally cannot think like a typical non-berkian dragon. i just. strongly dislike how people think of toothless more as an animal than someone who is simply non-human. the distinction is hard to explain but like. from what i’ve seen, for them, emotional and cognitive growth is Bad. toothless can’t not be the wary, mysterious dragon we see in the first film. he can’t be ‘downgraded’ into a playful nerd who doesn’t immediately harm every human that approaches him.

it. says A Lot about their Edge ( “a character opening up to literally anyone? unacceptable!” ) + their understanding of interesting and realistic characters. like? opposing qualities in a character aren’t? mutually exclusive?? a toothless who is an adorable fucking dweeb and a toothless who is majestic and takes no shit from anyone aren’t! mutually exclusive! they can be! the same toothless! a character! can have more than one (1) facet! god just. this notion that toothless trusting hiccup + berk’s humans enough to be vulnerable around them is somehow inferior to toothless Being Wild And Alone Forever is so! overrated! let jaded characters learn how to be soft and trusting you cowards! let characters who have been lonely for their entire life learn what and how it is to be connected you cowards!

maybe i’m looking too deeply into toothless. maybe it’s because i write him and toothless ( as anyone with self-awareness would ) sees himself as a person, not as an animal distinctly separate from a human. i don’t fucking know but i don’t appreciate it when people narrow toothless, a lovely character with an identity outside of ‘dragon who was befriended by a human’, down to literally just that.

flkdsjg okay enough complaining…more expanding on + gushing about how Best Tier this interspecies friendship is. i’ll try to leave my headcanons out of this but if i happen to not succeed in doing that you can’t blame me for doing what canon was too afraid to do ( which is explain things and make sense )

so first off! can i just talk about how important hiccup and toothless’ bond is, not just to people like me who would fucking kill for more media content with a strong emphasis on platonic soulmates, but also to the characters themselves? i have seen a lot of people make very logical, very probable inferences about toothless being hiccup’s first actual friend but please also consider the idea that hiccup might be toothless’ first actual friend, too!

we don’t know a lot about toothless’ past in canon but there are some things that can be confirmed for sure / with 99% surety:

he was separated from fellow night furies at a young age.

i say this with 100% certainty lmao there is no other way to explain his estrangement with his ‘night fury side’, which in httyd3 is depicted as his keen unfamiliarity with his species’ mating dance.

not the best depiction but i’ll give dreamw.orks a reluctant pass for that because although courtship rituals are genetically hardwired ( i.e. toothless inherently knows what ‘steps’ to take and what to do ), if he hasn’t ever seen one initiated before he probably would not know what to do when one is initiated to him ( i.e. he has no context for these ‘steps’; he doesn’t actually know that they’re a part of a courtship ritual ).

ig there’s also that thing about him not knowing he can harness lightning or whatever, but the fact that the first thing that popped into my head was that mating dance scene when i thought about how httyd3 depicted toothless’ disconnect with his ‘night fury side’ probably speaks something of how much they handwaved away any explanation for that phenomenon + consequently lowered the mnemonic impact of it

he was as much of an outcast in the red death’s nest as hiccup was in berk.

this is said with less certainty than the assumption above it but like. in the first film, hiccup says toothless “never steals food, never shows [himself], and…never misses” and we see toothless destroying human weapons / constructions. it all sets toothless up to be this Ultimate dragon to humans but can you imagine what that looks and sounds like to a dragon who is part of the red death’s flock?

“never stealing food?? what the fuck, courts danger?? do you want to die??? the queen’s gonna eat you what the fuck!”

i hc that she doesn’t eat toothless because she associates his presence in raids with more dragons coming back ( as she should because destroying human contraptions that trap / kill dragons makes it harder for them to. y’know. trap / kill dragons ), which equates to more food being brought back

so she makes one (1) exception for this quietly defiant but very amusing flock-subject

and everyone’s probably aware of that but they’re also like WHAT IF THIS IS THE DAY SHE CHANGES HER MIND BRING SOME FOOD BACK I DON’T WANT TO SEE ANOTHER EATEN!!

“what! are! you! shooting! at! it’s just weird dead-bark and metal! and that’s dead-bark and still-fire, what the fuck at least shoot at human dens if you’re gonna shoot at dead-bark!”

it’s very obvious to us humans what most of the contraptions we see in berk are used for but to dragons? dragons who don’t have the same cognitive processing and are probably too busy trying to gtfo with some food to figure out what this weird human shit does?

listen. we see toothless disarming humans. the dragons see toothless doing something they don’t understand for reasons they don’t understand.

HM DOES THIS SOUND FAMILIAR

okay he probably wasn’t an outcast per se but he was. definitely avoided.

basically, toothless was alone just like hiccup was!

so yeah. they changed the world with their friendship but their friendship absolutely changed their worlds first. that fact alone is delicious enough but then you look at what their relationship is actually like and god! finally_some_good_fucking_food.jpeg

i love! the comfort! the faith! the trust! the ease in which they touch and calm and talk to and fly with and sleep on and just…be with each other. we don’t see it much in httyd because duh, prologue but. there’s this sense of…complete and utter security in their bond by the time httyd2 comes around. they know each other so well. they love each other so much.

hiccup, completely unafraid of the plasma blasts detonating dangerously close to his fairly immobile, very vulnerable form. hiccup, trusting in toothless’ faith in him as he splays a simple hand out to stop him. hiccup, “TOOTHLESS!” / “HEY! you left my dragon back there! he can’t fly on his own! he’ll drown!” / “we have to head back for my dragon!”

toothless, willing to support hiccup’s decisions even if they are stupid af. toothless, trusting in hiccup’s judgement and ability to defuse situations where he would have exacerbated them. toothless, so ready to shield hiccup from harm from anything or anyone.

hiccup, terrified for toothless even as he grieves for his father. hiccup, ignoring drago, ignoring the bewilderbeast, pleading one more time for toothless. hiccup, willing to die reaching if only to have toothless reach back. hiccup, “please. you are my best friend, bud.” / “my best friend.”

toothless, sensitive to hiccup’s upset and wanting so badly to make it go away. toothless, waiting as the haziness becomes clearer, waiting for the touch, the face, the voice. toothless, willing to fight “the strength of will over others” to reach back. toothless, “he’s challenging the alpha!” / “to protect you!”

god there’s so much more but if i listed every single detail about their friendship as observed in httyd2 this answer wouldn’t be ready for posting for like. at least a week

and even before they reach that stage, those decisions in httyd that go from hesitant to confident…

toothless, wary and mistrustful but willing to give this human a chance. toothless, mimicking hiccup rather than completely disregarding him or chasing him off. toothless, slowly…cautiously…hopefully…reaching back.

hiccup, throwing his cheat sheet to the wind and relying on instinct and trust alone. hiccup, standing tall under astrid’s doubt and saying with full conviction: yes. hiccup, casting his helmet and viking status aside because he can’t not see a bit of toothless in every dragon now. hiccup, jumping onto a burning ship with no goddamn fucking hesitation to free a trapped toothless. hiccup, falling into the fire of his own creation, into the end of a centuries old war.

toothless, putting his faith in this human who has never once flown in his entire life and then putting even more faith in this human who quite literally throws caution to the wind. toothless, climbing out of the cove not for himself but for hiccup. toothless, going against instinct and swallowing his fire because hiccup screamed “NO!”. toothless, terrified for his hecking life but willing to “stay with me, buddy, we’re good, just a little bit longer” and “hold, toothless…NOW!”. toothless, falling into the fire with hiccup, determined to make this the end of one thing only.

PLUS SO MUCH MORE. these are only from the first two films alone; gotnf gives us even more Good Content and i’m just! fuck! i love two dweebs! i love hiccup and toothless so much!

and now for specific character growth / developments that i will never get over…i won’t talk about hiccup because i am nearing 2000 words BUT TOOTHLESS…LISTEN. toothless never used to drink “have mercy on others” juice. he never used to drink “don’t shoot or maim or otherwise injure when provoked” juice. he never used to drink “give others a chance because everyone deserves a chance” and “not everyone is out to kill you or hurt you or take everything you love and cherish away from you” juice. but after bonding with hiccup? he’s hooked! he’s so hooked! he is more willing to lean into faith rather than doubt! he is more willing to believe in an after rather than a never! he is more willing to compromise rather than overlook! he is more willing! to empathise!! i’m so emo!

i already talked a bit about how he comes to trust enough to be vulnerable ( i.e. not constantly guarded / cautious ) around berkians and like…can you imagine how big of an achievement that is for someone like him? for someone who has been alone for so much of his life? for someone who knows what it’s like to be forced to be vulnerable for someone they don’t trust at all? I’M SO! EMO!

HICCUP FINDING STRENGTH IN TOOTHLESS? TOOTHLESS FINDING STRENGTH IN HICCUP?? MmMmMm that’s some good shit ( Good Shit ) right there!!

i have…a lot more screaming about their friendship + love for each other to do but i’m tired and you can tell so i’ll wrap this up with some more opinions on httyd3′s Bad Tier handling of toothless’ character and the consequent portrayal of his bond with hiccup! i know you’ve already read it julie but if anyone who’s read to this far hasn’t already seen it…maybe take a peek at my first essay™ here…

i haven’t seen the final movie in a while so my memory of it might be a little shit but i’m glad that they at least maintained some element of that gentle ease / security / comfort we see in httyd2. definitely not as much as i’d hoped, but i would’ve been able to deal with that — maybe even justify it — if they hadn’t also insulted hict.ooth’s friendship for the sake of a ‘love at first sight!’ romance i can’t get behind multiple, multiple, MULTIPLE times.

i failed to address this in my first httyd3 critical post BUT LIKE. the way EVERYONE acts like and states that toothless ignoring / dismissing hiccup was a very natural, logical consequence of him being interested in the light fury ( which he. defs would stop being after she nearly killed what is literally half of him oh my goOoOod ) was so! fucking! insulting! to not only hiccup + toothless’ bond, but also to almost everything this franchise stands for and the characters themselves!

after six years of seeing hiccup and toothless interact with + love each other, do you really think HICCUP’S FRIENDS would say “well, what did you expect?” to toothless leaving?? do you really think that they would imply that toothless only stayed with hiccup because he didn’t have a choice? ‘maybe they don’t understand the weight of their bond, stingray’ AFTER SIX GODDAMN YEARS OF SEEING IT DEVELOP AND DEEPEN??? and maybe they don’t but surely they understand how important toothless is to hiccup and wouldn’t make a callous comment like that RIGHT?? god i’m so ready to throw hands at dreamw.orks for having astrid say “he didn’t have any reason to” to hiccup’s “he didn’t leave before” i am sO r e A d Y

also just the fact that IT’S IMPLIED THAT TOOTHLESS ONLY STAYED WITH HICCUP BECAUSE HE DIDN’T HAVE A CHOICE / ANY REASON NOT TO?? it’s so gross what the heck dreamw.orks why bring gotnf up if you’re just going to retcon it i don’t understand!

httyd3 is a good movie in that it is very evocative, has an insanely lovely colour palette + insanely amazing soundtrack, and tries its best to give a satisfying ending to “the friendship of a lifetime”. i love it and will absolutely be rewatching it so many times when it’s released on blu-ray, but it’s not perfect and i could go on and on and ON about the tragedy that is toothless’ characterisation.

Are you bothered by your cosmic insignificance? i'm terribly aware of it, sometimes that can make it difficult to find the point in staying alive. i can hardly imagine anyone who's not bothered by this tbh, doesn't it make everything we do sort of pointless?

Do you mourn for a place or person you’ve never known? i definitely do. i long for something more.

Do you really think there is somebody for everybody? honestly, i don't know. i certainly dont think there is one specific person for everyone but i guess it only makes sense that everybody's got several peopple they feel comfortable with and are a perfect fit. the question is, will they ever meet one of them?

Do you place any value in gender roles? no

Do you have to be related to be family? no, family is so much more than that.

Are your platonic relationships just as valuable as romantic or family ones? definitely. some even more so.

Are you in love? Do you want to be? i am. i'm not sure if i want to be.

Do you think you can put love into categories (family, platonic, romantic, etc.) or is it just one general sensation? i find it difficult to see differences between platonic and romantic love, especially when a romantic relationship went on for a while. ig the feelings are mostly the same, you just choose to express them in different ways.

(3) Honestly even with all my issues it's kind of nice being a hopeless romantic! Like you said it gives me the chance to day dream haha. Maybe I have my head in the clouds a lot but sometimes it's nice to be there. There's so many, but I think it's a tie between enemies to lovers and friends to lovers. I love the drama and comedy from the former but I'm so Soft for the latter, and that's highkey how I want my relationship to start.

(4) I think building that bond with someone before you even start dating them is really sweet, and having that connection by the time you commit to each other is 💓 I'm sorry you've been having writers block, that's the worst :( if it helps, the past two chapters have turned out amazing, I love them so much!! I think the closest I got to hardcore shipping something that wasn't canon was RinHaru? But there was also a lot of tension and affection in their relationship so I could see it being canon

there’s nothing wrong with having dreams! just so long as you can ground yourself at the end of the day.

enemies to lovers is always the funniest for me to read TBH. because it’s such an inevitable cliche haha. friends to lovers though -- oooo my heart.

I've developed a relationship with my blood family and we're close, but there's something special about the relationships and love you have for people you choose to stay with. I love Tiana!! I think she's a really underrated Disney character :(

Ngl it's kind of scary wondering about what the industry is going to be like because I'm sure I will run into a lot of biased people and sources, but learning to navigate that is just part of the job. Of course there's people who will read biased sources and attack you too, but you can't always escape those people :/ and thank you love, you're so sweet 💕 That's really admirable! It takes a lot of work and creativity to start a business, I'm sure you'll be successful 😊

(8) what kind were you thinking of? and psych is super cool too! Having that understanding of people and the world can be really eye opening and fun :D It's okay, he was one of my favorite teachers but looking back he was an asshole. He had his good/funny moments and did a lot for me, but he also abused some of editors in my journalism class, and some friends of mine :/ He wouldn't appreciate their work, sometimes insult them, and even encouraged my friend to not sleep for the sake of the paper

i really wanted to open a business to help support under-represented groups receive an education - with major focus on minority groups such as orphans/foster children, veterans, and the homeless. there’s so much logistics that tbh i’m too ~stressed~ to think about so i’m tabling that for awhile :’)

Wounds are always fun, but making yourself a gargoyle or some other creature is what makes it so interesting to me.

(11) I'm OBSESSED with the makeup and costumes from LOTR. It's my biggest inspiration. I can go on about it haha. That's so cool!! Being a part of the whole production, especially all sides to it, sounds so fun. Do you have any favorite memories from your time in high school? SUPERGIRL RANT TIME 5

Imagine, if instead of Mon, Kara found a teenager/kid inside the pod? A little girl/boy Kryptonian/Daxamite that she could have taught and cared for? I personally think that would have been more interesting to see than Kara falling for the man-child she was babysitting.

I can imagine the kid being more into the science stuff if they were Kryptonian and then meets Lena and they click would have been better than Man Boy’s entrance.

Or like Kara gaining an understanding of why Clark didn’t take her in, because she sees how hard it is. Or maybe even getting angry with Clark because she’s making it work when he didn’t even try, that way we get a touch of the darkness in Kara like in the episode where she couldn’t show her anger.

I really think that could have offered her a lot more growth because now her entire arc has been placed on her love life.

Sadly this season has been all about love.

I say sadly because everyone got a love life which freaking annoys me. They should have just focused on Maggie and Alex getting together or even maybe Winn’s love life. By the way, totally called the girlfriend being evil somehow.

This season everyone got a love interest, even James because his love is the Guardian.

To be honest, I’m 80% happy that Katie McGrath got promoted as a season regular because I’ll get to see Katie on television again. I’m 10% terrified that they’re going to butcher her character somehow and the other 10% is worried that they just did it to bait us Katie Mcgrath fans and they’ll only show her like half the time to keep us watching.

I mean, how many of us just watch it now because of Lena? Tune in to see her name on the screen and then flip the channel when we don’t see her on the guest spot? Or if you live in the Pacific time zone like I do, check IG at 6 for #lenaluthor to see if there’s new screen caps of her? She’s honestly the only reason I watch Supergirl.

I admit, the sequence and story progression regarding that the villains and the objective have gotten better from the first season. There’s flow in the action but character growth and development is all over the place for me this season.

Kara starts off wanting to find herself, wants to find her place in the world, define herself outside of a romantic partner but then not even halfway through the season, she falls for Mon-El who’s a mess of a character himself because his arc has been completely rushed.

Alex and Kara don’t even really feel like sisters anymore. And honestly, Alex pushing Kara to date kind of makes me think she did it so she can concentrate on Maggie and not feel guilty that Kara’s alone. And being with Mon is easier for Kara since he already knows the Supergirl thing and because she doesn’t have to worry about her powers but I don’t even know what Kara likes about Mon?

He’s really a good guy despite his chauvinistic and arrogant beliefs? That he’s trying to change from the irresponsible coward to a hero? Why? Because he loves her enough to try? Why does Mon even love Kara? It always seems like he wants her to change too?

And the fuck was that episode on Flash? Music Meister wants them to learn they should allow themselves to be saved by their romantic partners and forgive them?

Jesus, Kara’s ass gets saved by J’onn and Alex half the fucking time on the show!

And we know Kara can forgive. She’s done it for Mon at the end of every episode. I know she’s not perfect but come freaking on. He practically said he never would have admitted it to her if his parents didn’t show up. That just proves that he hasn’t really changed.

Maybe that’s the attraction to Mon? He’s the selfish entitled jackass that she wants to be sometimes but feels like she can’t afford to be.

If that’s the case, then that explains some things.

It doesn’t excuse things because I get being attracted to the thing you want to be, but if Kara wants to be selfish deep down, then she could do better! Be with someone who can stand up for their self, who can back up their actions. That’s my problem with Mon El. His whole character’s excuse for being shitty is that he supposedly doesn’t know better.

That’s his entire excuse. He just says sorry but he never really shows that he is. And besides, he seems to have such little faith in Kara that it makes me wonder why he even really likes her?

He was afraid that she wouldn’t treat him right because he’s a Daxamite? He didn’t want to confess because he was afraid to prove Kara right? Or that Kara wouldn’t speak to him again? That means he thinks she’s an unforgiving racist. Why does he freaking love her then?

I really don’t understand what their character’s attraction is to one another. Especially on Kara’s end!

But still, Kara forgiving Mon after this just really pissed me off because it’s restarting the cycle of abuse all over again! Fucking A Kara, he lied about who he is so you would let him get close to you. And he lied about not telling anyone that you were dating. Lied about letting the Jeremiah thing go. He lies about shit and Kara just forgives him all the fucking time because he’s a Daxamite? He doesn’t know better because of the planet he comes from so we must excuse his ways? I thought Kryptonian’s were supposed to be smart?

Besides, she could have forgiven him without wanting to get back together. Make him really earn your trust which Kara seems to give so easily to everyone but LENA!!!!!

Yes, Mon saved her but come on, that crossover was a freaking mess. Music Meister did it so they’d learn a lesson? Like I said, Kara knows how to forgive. I don’t like that they were manipulated/forced into the situation where she had to learn something that a 26 year old woman should already know and I don’t like that everyone was telling her to forgive Mon because yes, Jeremiah lied to Alex and Lyra lied to Winn, but it’s not even remotely the same because they did it to protect people they love.

Because clearly, Mon doesn’t have a problem protecting Kara from his ‘truths’ since he reminds her of her faults whenever they’re arguing.

Clearly, the only person Mon is interested in protecting is himself.

Also it’s crude and derogatory to Supergirl/Kara. She’s supposed to be the epitome of female empowerment and yet they backed her into a corner to force her to see their point.

It just makes her stupid and it reinforces the belief that people should be forgiven even if they continually repeat the same mistake over and over again and that there are no consequences to Mon El’s actions. I mean, he’ll have to fight his parents but that doesn’t matter since Kara will offer her support and vagina every step of the way.

Anyway, this whole season is just a jumbled mess. Kryptonian’s have been painted as prideful arrogant race while Daxamites are savages who treat women objectively? But then why does Mon El’s dad let his mom have so much say?

She’s the one that talked to Kara to convince her to return Mon to them. I don’t think such an important task would have been entrusted to the queen if women were nothing compared to the men. Nothing about Mon’s mom seems like she’s subservient so if Mon’s been exposed to powerful women, why would he react like he doesn’t know strong women exist? Besides, if Daxamites were truly savages wouldn’t they have just issued an ultimatum and demanded Mon’s return or else blown the planet to bits? I mean they have an people at their disposal. It seems like the King and Queen wouldn’t even bargain, just make demands. Clearly they aren’t strangers to politics.

It just feels like the Kryptonian/Daxamite disagreement’s being blown to epic proportions because if their beef really had been that severe, if they truly hated each other wouldn’t the Kryptonian’s just have eliminated them with the Medusa virus?

The writers seem like their pushing Kryptonian/Daxam hatred of one another too hard and it feels inauthentic.

Like they’re really making it seem like Mon and Kara’s races were so different and that they truly hated each other and that they should never ever be together because of that.

But from what’s gone on, it feels more like they disagree on their views seeing as Kryptonian’s value academics and intelligence while Daxamites value wealth and power. Mostly it feels like they don’t like each other but leave the other race well enough alone. If that’s the case, it doesn’t warrant such reactions. Even the way they talk like ‘Daxamites are this’ and ‘Kryptonites are that’ make it seem more like they ignore each other’s existence because they don’t think highly of the other. It doesn’t really feel like they hate each other enough to have been at war with one another to the death for years.

Am I the only one getting that?

It’s racist but if they truly hated each other I’m pretty sure Kryptonians/Daxamites would have ended the other race if it really bothered them to that degree.

And Mon’s the crowned prince. Like honestly, does he think his tyrannical parents will let their heir go after he disrespected them? And if he really wants to change things on Daxam, if he has become a selfless individual, wouldn’t the right course be to be with his people and try to change things there?

I know he loves Kara but did he even think about the mess his parents could bring to her, to Earth if he stayed?

If this is the type of writing that I have to look forward to then I’m afraid for Lena Luthor. They’re going to give her a love story not worth her character, one that’ll probably test her friendship with Kara somehow, before she’ll be painted as an evil character. Or they let her remain good but then they’ll ruin her character anyway, in the most unimaginative way. They’re going to weaken her character.

I bet they’re going to make her date Winn since they’re both super smart and both have family members that killed people and are in jail.

I like Winn, don’t get me wrong, but Lena with him would be predictable and boring. I mean, Winn hasn’t had suffered half the stigma that Lena has and yes, they’re both smart but then it’ll be like Maggie and Alex all over again because the characters would be too perfect together.

I’m preparing myself for the worst. I’m lowering my expectations so I won’t be disappointed. I’ll simply enjoy seeing Katie McGrath grace my screen, focus on the good instead of the bad.
