I'm gonna be honest, I follow over 700 blogs, but I've also been on this site since like 2015 and probably a large chunk of those are inactive now, I just can't be bothered to go through them to unfollow because like, not really necessary is it? Then there's a good handful of blogs that aren't inactive as such but post only very rarely, but when they post it's something I generally really wanna see. And a bunch I used to share interests with but no longer do but just never remember to actually unfollow...
And then on top of those, I'm in a lot of very niche communities that just aren't going to end up on the For You page (which is recent enough addition that I never really got used to using it anyway and generally only remember it's there if I go to it accidentally) no matter what. Including, but not limited to, the community of people who post in my first language about local politics and such topics. And a group of folks dedicated to a niche stage adaptation of JRR Tolkien's Beren and Lúthien (for you page gives me tolkien fandom stuff, sure, but really just regarding the more mainstream parts of the fandom, not the really obscure stuff), or other small fandoms like that. Fannish communities built around not a specific fandom but some other aspect of the fan experience. That sort of thing. Like, when you're into like ten different types of niche stuff you don't find posts about unless you follow people who post it, that adds up quick. Plus then on top of that ofc I follow a number of blogs for slightly more mainstream things, plus old friends I follow primarily for the friendship with them rather than any shared interests or lack thereof.
I also have like four different sideblogs plus my main blog, so what I reblog gets divided between those, depending on what interests it's about
Then there's a good handful of blogs that aren't inactive as such but post only very rarely, but when they post it's something I generally really wanna see.
This. These are most of my YouTube subscriptions too. A few frequent posters and a bunch who make very occasional masterpieces.
Thanks for the more specific critique of the For You page! Now into the processing vortex you go.

what social media would briony use in a modern AU?
I answered this question for the other characters here like two years ago, but I would like to revise some of my answers... (but some are also staying the same)
Blade would have owned a Facebook account at one time, but he would never use it except to receive invitations from everyone else and whatnot. He would mostly only communicate via texting. Once a year he would dispense one Facebook “like” on the one day he did decide to check it, and it would become a competition between everyone else to receive that one coveted like for the year. But eventually he would delete his account and would have no social media presence at all, lol.
Trouble would also use primarily Facebook and Twitter, and on Facebook he’d be that guy who 1) likes those pages like “LIKE IF YOU ARE A 90s KID” and 2) accidentally hooks up his game apps to his Facebook account so all of his friends would get spammed with requests for ToonBlast and etc. So his feed would be an absolute mess. On Twitter he’d just follow a bunch of people and things he’s interested in, but rarely post or retweet anything himself. He’d also use Snapchat and would spam everybody with Bitmoijs that don’t really make any sense in the context of the conversation.
Tallys would have an Instagram–primarily the visual/aesthetic platform to share photos on–and she’d rack up like thousands of followers because uhhh you get to know a lot of people when you live that long… When she’d be feeling up to it, she’d share some inspirational caption with a picture of herself doing yoga or something!
Shery would only have a Tumblr and a Pinterest lol. She’d use social media mostly just for her hobbies/crafting/nerdery… She’d probably have a small Etsy store, too! If you really went digging you might find an old abandoned WordPress associated with her that had a few blog/journal entries before fizzling out...
Riel would have a LinkedIn and a Twitter. This is a Brooklyn 99 reference but his Twitter handle would be his name in binary (@01010010_01101001_01100101 01101100_00001101_00001010) and he’d sign all of his thoughts with - Regards, Riel Syndran. Example:
Riel Syndran @01010010_01101001_01100101 01101100_00001101_00001010:
Children are just small humans that have not yet learned to articulate their thoughts.
Regards, Riel Syndran
Chase would be a social media whore and would have all the basics: Instagram, Facebook, Snapchat, Twitter, Tumblr, and Reddit. He’d mostly post gratuitous photos on Instagram and rack up them likes while lurking on the other platforms (though he’d be a competent retweeter), but he’d also have the gamut of dating apps–Tinder, etc. The group would meet at a bar to celebrate something and he’d casually swiping while engaged in an animated talk with somebody. You’d never know unless you looked at his screen!
Halek would only have an Instagram (he deleted his Facebook a long time ago) and he would just post aesthetic pictures of food. He’d also have a secret Youtube account of him making recipes, but no one would ever know it was him because the camera would only show his hands and the food, not his face!
Red would have all of the social platforms but would only primarily communicate and post to friends using Snapchat. This would make people think he’s up to no good, but it’s just because no one answers his texts (he’s an over-texter) and this way his random thoughts and pictures would disappear after a while…He’d also be an avid Redditor and would always want to talk about some famous post he saw on Reddit, but no one would know what he meant...
Ayla would be on Twitter only and she would be getting into Twitter-fights constantly. It’s fun for her! She’d have an Instagram, but it would be empty of anything except a profile pic of her flipping the camera off.
Briony would have Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat, and Tumblr. She’d never use Facebook except to wish people a happy birthday; she’d rarely post on Instagram and would mostly use the “live stories” feature maybe once or twice a month; she wouldn’t like Snapchat very much because she likes having a record of things and hates disappearing photos and conversations; and she’d run an active anonymous Tumblr that would be dedicated to some fandom or project and would gain a lot of popularity, but it wouldn’t be blogging about herself and or anything personal!
Lavinet would be an Instagram “model” and would get to the point where she’d be paid to endorse stuff on Instagram or would parse out her travel pics so it looked like she was traveling all of the time! She’d be taking constant selfies until the group universally decided to ban her from doing it around them lol. She’d have a Twitter and a Youtube channel where she’d vlog and do tutorials, too!
Mimir would only have a MySpace and a Twitter. The MySpace would say nothing and the Twitter would be full of cryptic nonsense–and yet inexplicably she’d have a dedicated following of not-bots religiously retweeting everything she said!

hot take on season 4 stuff
I’ve seen a few posts circulating about season 4 of wtFOCK and the potential for a season 5. I put together this list in hopes that it will motivate people to continue their involvement in watching season 4.
1. Yasmina I shouldn’t have to say much more than this. Yasmina is an incredibly lovable character who we’ve had the delight of getting to know throughout the series. She is a solid landing place for Robbe, hinting his involvement in her season (aside from the parallels to the OG and other remakes).
Yasmina as a Muslim woman though, and as a main character, are big deals for marginalized groups that have never had that representation in a production before. The other seasons (primarily) highlighted how important this is and I’d like to stress the importance of this for Yasmina’s season as well. If we don’t support marginalized groups (women, poc, religious minorities, or any combination), it highlights our lack of interest to the entertainment world. Let’s not do that. For wtFOCK to end up in a large news paper, highlighting the 10 million views the show has gotten only for that to disappear when a Muslim woman becomes the main? That will send a message, intentional or not.
2. Potential for a Season 5
This is pretty basic. Interest in a show is one of the best ways to ensure that the show continues on in further seasons. I won’t explain more about this. That doesn’t necessarily mean being a tumblr blog dedicated to season 4 of wtFOCK but it does mean the engagement with social media and watching the show where you can. I don’t mean to say the online population is the primary source of hits for the show nor are we its target audience but there is some level of recognition that is garnered through social media. The producer has liked several posts about a Sander season 5. Does that mean anything? It may not, but why ruin our chances when it’s possible?
3. “But Season 3 was so stressful”
I have some basic things to say here. I’ve seen a number of people who said they were going to completely bow out of the fandom because of Season 3.
Unfollow people who have opinions that you simply don’t vibe with
Ignore or delete asks that complain about something you enjoyed
Don’t engage in discourse if it isn’t productive or meaningful to you
Block users that abuse the tag to spam their frustrations with the show especially if that negatively impacts you
Surround yourself with people who are respectful, thoughtful and reflective
Take frequent breaks from social media and especially the tag
This season was particularly stressful. There were moments of great writing and moments that have left us concerned or questioning. There were moments where a lot of viewers felt the writers were focused on shock value or cliffhangers instead of a full story.
While the season is not yet done and I can’t speak to those matters, I can say that I’ve enjoyed my experience by surrounding myself with people who communicate the way that I do. People who respect one anothers’ opinions, people who try to filter negativity out and only focus on the positives.
Did I see complaints on my dash about “not enough Sander” and then posts responding that it’s not his season? Yeah. But if it went too far, I unfollowed. There were a lot of posts about mental illness discourse, some of which were quite frankly really toxic. I unfollowed. Even if the user themselves doesn’t have those opinions but is spamming your dash with the opinions of other people just so they can argue, you don’t have to follow that.
You are not obligated to follow someone that stresses you out. You are not obligated to engage with people who stress you out. You are not obligated to post asks/anonymous messages of people who stress you out. Your social media experience can 100% be determined by your choices and who you interact with.
If the fandom stressed you out, seek out those people that lived in the middle ground, that celebrated what you celebrated and spoke about matters that were important to you. Your mental health is important and this show, or a section of its community, should not be apart of that.
so with this, I really hope to see active participation in season 4 of wtFOCK. I really hope that people were here for the story, the acting, the representation and I hope that they are not so caught up in Robbe and Sander that season 4 is not of interest to them.
I really hope that season 3′s success will only inspire further success for the next season which can create room for a fifth. I hope that next season, I don’t see people complaining “we had so much Zoenne in Robbe’s season, where are Robbe and Sander?” because it won’t be productive or conducive to conversations.
This is not, has not been, and will not be the Robbe and Sander show. Robbe lived with Zoe and Senne, making their interactions a pivotal part of his growth, relationships and every day life. Will Robbe and Sander be part of Yasmina’s life? Most likely but she will be the focus, just as Robbe was our focus now.
If we ever want a Sander season, I suggest that we learn to love the main as we move forward and let the story be theirs.
thanks for coming to my tedtalk

20 in 10: A Drama Retrospective
Since I’ve been all quiet on the drama front this year because of life reasons, I thought it would be fun to go back and pick out 20 of the most memorable dramas of the last decade. Maybe not necessarily the best dramas or even my favorites (although some are!), but two dramas each year that were somehow notable moments in my drama-watching timeline.
2009: Gateway Drugs
Tumblr media
Boys over Flowers (KBS)
This is not, by any stretch of the imagination, a good drama. It is not one I think I can ever really rewatch (although I will happily revisit the 2005 Japanese version, and I had a hellava fun time watching the latest Chinese version). But! It was the first kdrama I remember watching, and the first step on the slippery slope of eventually becoming a Drama Addict. I mostly remember it being crazy popular on places like mysoju (RIP), and so I checked it out due to curiosity, and the rest, as they say, is history. Or, should I say, almost paaaaradise!
Tumblr media
You’re Beautiful (SBS)
This one I also watched because it became crazy-popular online, and curiosity got the better of me. I really didn’t know much about k-pop prior to dramas, so I had no idea until after this drama that k-pop was more about pretty people in crazy fashion, dancing in syncopation in bizarrely lit rooms, rather than playing instruments. Because it was thanks to this drama that I got my crash-course on k-pop as a phenomenon -- both the fandom side, and the crazy things that artists have to go through to claw their way into the public’s view (nevar 4get the glorious ramen dance). Since Angel was a group that played instruments, and Hongki and Yonghwa were also from groups that played instruments, I assumed that all kpop were groups that played instruments. Oh, sweet summer child...
But it did get me started on my k-pop journey, first falling in love with FT Island and CNBLUE, before falling into the rabbit hole of the other prominent groups of the day. (SNSD! The Wonder Girls! Super Junior! DBSK! SS501! Kara! 2PM! 2AM! Shinee! BEG! Epik High! U-KISS! All the debut groups, like 2NE1, MBLAQ, B2ST, 4Minute, f(x), T-ara, After School... basically 2009 was a magical year in k-pop.)
If I had just watched Boys Over Flowers, I don’t know that I would have become a Drama Addict. But You’re Beautiful pushed me closer to the edge, with the zany humor of the Hong Sisters (and the desire for a pig-bunny of my own!). It would really be Coffee Prince that would push me over the edge, but that aired in 2007 so it doesn’t count for this list. But I had to mention it anyway, because, well, it’s Coffee Prince and where my love for Handsome Oppa began.
2010: More Than Candy
Tumblr media
The Woman Who Wants To Marry (MBC)
A lot of the dramas I watched at first had that typical “Candy” character, the poor-but-scrappy girl who would somehow be saved by the guy and become the Cinderella she never knew she wanted to be. So it was a delight when I encountered women who were not only older than high-school-age or early twenties, but in their thirties, with rich full lives! Plus, this was one of my earliest introductions to the concept of the “noona romance” (a concept that I’ve since heartily embraced, of course). I started it primarily because Kim Bum was my favorite of the Flower Boys, but I stuck with it because I fell in love with the women (and I still have a girl-crush on Bu-ki).
Tumblr media
Harvest Villa (tvn)
This show is insane. But in the good way, the way that the writer intended, and not in the “are a bunch of monkeys typing this script?” train-wreck way. There was basically no buzz about this show, and I feel like I somehow accidentally stumbled over it, but it was love at first sight. I’ve never forgotten the late hours binging it, being so sucked into the story that I absolutely had to finish it as soon as I could, disappointed that there wasn’t more of it to enjoy when I finally finished, bleary-eyed and sleep-deprived, but satisfied.
I then later gobbled down this writer’s next drama, and her next drama, and the next, until everyone else finally realized thanks to Signal that Kim Eun-hee was as amazing a writer as I kept insisting to anyone who would listen (aka no one).
2011: To Binge or Not To Binge?
Tumblr media
White Christmas (KBS)
I did not watch White Christmas in 2011. I actually watched it in 2013. I was always a steadfast binger, preferring to wait until the buzz about a show would sway me into spending my precious free-time watching something that would be worth my while (not that my drama choices were always good, but at least I tried to avoid the duds). I still prefer to binge, since waiting weeks for new episodes is vaguely frustrating when I want to know what happens next, right now! Plus, I’m very good at forgetting that I’m watching a show in the week-long wait for new episodes, and then just... never picking it back up again.
Despite watching White Christmas a couple years after it aired, it remains one of my favorites, and one I love to rewatch, even though I’ve already experienced  whodunnit cliff-hangers and psychological rollercoasters. It became a tradition of sorts here on tumblr for a bunch of us to rewatch it over the holiday season -- alas, I haven’t joined in that tradition for the past couple of years, but I hope that somewhere in this blue hell hole that there are a loyal few keeping the tradition alive.
At least we have this drama to thank for bringing us all the model-actors that were new and clueless in White Christmas, but would later go on to be leading men in their own right. Of course, some of them haven’t exactly made the best drama choices (*cough*SungJoon*cough*), but then there are others (*cough*SooHyuk*cough*) that I’m impatiently waiting for to pick up a new drama so I can see those post-army abs.
Tumblr media
Tree With Deep Roots (SBS)
This is the first drama that I recall live-watching. I vaguely remember regretting it at the time, since it was agony waiting for new episodes, but it was also fun to have a week to speculate and ponder the show. And what a beautiful show to ponder! This was also one of the few sageuks I actually watched, being generally intimidated by anything longer than 16-20 episodes, and my historical knowledge was a little shaky (before embracing my inner nerd and diving into mundane historical stuff just so I could better understand whatever drama I was watching at the time).
I don’t think I intended to continue live-watching shows, preferring the ease of binging at my own pace and schedule. But that was when I was still a casual, innocent addict, and not someone who would eventually make dramas a huge part of her life.
2012: The Joy of Overthinking
Tumblr media
Gaksital (KBS)
Having had a taste of live-watching, I started to live-watch enough dramas to the point where I began to make notes about the premiere weeks. It was only a couple at a time, and binging was still my preferred way to watch, but now I was delighting in being part of the fandom, sharing in speculation each week, posting my thoughts on dramas and analyzing them to my heart’s content -- even though I knew no one except me would read my ridiculous essays.
But I started to feel more comfortable sharing my opinion with the world, interacting with fandom and not merely content to be a consumer, but gradually becoming a producer as well.
Tumblr media
Reply 1997 (tvN)
This is it. This is when I went full-on Drama Addict. This is the tipping point from casual fan who quietly kept to herself, to becoming someone who stood on the mountain top yelling about ALL THE DRAMAS ALL THE TIME. I began to interact with other fans! To swap theories and share squee-worthy moments! I even watched episodes RAW just because of how desperate I was to know what happened, and even though the Busan accent stumped me more than once, it made me realize that my casual study of Korean was something to take seriously since I understood more than I gave myself credit for.
It was also the first time any post I made got more than a handful of notes, since I’d mostly hovered in the “less than 10 notes per post” category at the time. I was so proud of myself back then!
(This drama also notably marks the start of my Hoya obsession, which continues to this day.)
2013: Tumblr Friends (and Foes)
Tumblr media
Flower Boy Next Door (tvN)
Having made myself comfortable on tumblr as a Drama Addict, I then discovered some other dedicated fans -- many of which I still follow to this day and who are now just a permanent part of my dash, no matter what their current interests may be -- in the FBND squad.
But I also discovered Kim Seul-gi as the Webtoon Editor (who I still love and adore and continue to use as my avatar), and her adorable romance with Dong-hoon remains one of my forever OTPs. As much as I enjoyed the drama romances, I’d never fallen so deeply for one to be so obsessed by it as I was Webtoon Editor and Dong-hoon. And tbh I still am. They’re just so adorable and pragmatic and she buys him a bag. Ugh. I love her so much, you guys.
Tumblr media
Heirs (SBS)
Ah, yes. This hot mess.
I don’t know what possessed me to live-blog each episode. But I did. With snarky commentary and terrible screencaps. And suddenly I went from maybe 200 followers to over a 1000. That was a total shock! I met a lot of people because of that (and made some friends, as well as a few enemies who didn’t appreciate my opinion of certain characters), and ensconced myself as part of the drama-blogging crew.
It was from this that someone suggested I apply to be a minion at Dramabeans. Back then, I had a lot more free time than I do now, and I was watching a lot of dramas that Dramabeans didn’t cover, and wished they did so I could read more opinions about those shows. So I thought, “Eh, why not? It can’t hurt to submit something because the worst that would happen is I’d waste their time making them read my take on episode 10 of Let’s Eat.”
I fully expected them to turn me down. No one was more surprised than I was when I found myself agreeing to dive into the world of recapping.
2014: It Was the Best of Times, It Was the Worst of Times
Tumblr media
Trot Lovers (KBS)
Recapping. It seems so easy when you’re reading the recaps. But actually creating them is a bitch. Hours out of my life were spent on this disaster of a trope-laden show with no plot. This was the third show I worked on for Dramabeans, and I hated it to the point where I seriously considered handing in my notice. (Immediately following up this show with the mediocre My Secret Hotel certainly didn’t help matters!)
However, it turns out that what I actually hated was being forced to watch a terrible rom-com and pretend to come up with insightful-or-at-least-neutral thoughts about it (since we were still new and couldn’t go full-on snark yet).
Tumblr media
Misaeng (tvN)
This is what saved me. Being given the chance to immerse myself in such a unique, ponderous, thoughtful show restored my faith in dramas and the drama community. I loved spending hours on this show, soaking up all the little details, and then sharing that love with the world.
Misaeng made dramas magical again.
2015: Fight Me
Tumblr media
Valid Love (tvN)
Realizing that I only seemed to enjoy rom-coms at arm-length, I discovered that my tastes often ran counter to the general drama-viewing public. Not all the drama-viewing public -- I’m not a “not like other fans” kind of fan -- but enough that I began to realize the whether a drama was popular or had good buzz was not necessarily the primary reason to watch it.
I began to have more faith in my own taste, based on past experiences with various writers and directors. Even if the premise (or first couple of episodes) seemed kind of weird and out-there, I at least wanted to give these artists the benefit of the doubt that I would enjoy their work, like I had previously.
So many people seemed to hate Valid Love, but I adored it. Still do (and still desperately wish Kim Do-woo would come out with a new drama -- it has been too long, writer-nim!). There were a lot of opinions about this show, even among people who seemed to enjoy it, but I vividly recall having to repeatedly insist that it wasn’t about the romance and argue that  the knee-jerk infidelity-is-BAD opinions should make space for something more nuanced.
Tumblr media
Ho-gu’s Love (tvN)
DramaFever was a pretty great site. It brought together so many drama fans and gave them a place where they could legally (and without fear of downloading random viruses) watch dramas to their heart’s content. Yes, there may have been some lingering resentment that they were the primary reason that so many amazing other sites were shut down (RIP mysoju and daebaeksubs), but dramas were more accessible than ever!
Eventually, DramaFever started to sub shows themselves and upload them weekly (instead of just using fansubs and uploading older dramas), and while they weren’t the best translations, they were at least better than machine translations from the Chinese subs. As I became more and more familiar with Korean, I found myself more likely to migrate to Viki since I liked the extra detailed translations. I could get the gist of a show without any help -- I wanted to instead delve into the nitty-gritty of the language.
But I never really hated DramaFever or felt they were particularly awful. Until they mistranslated something so terribly that it changed the entire meaning of a scene and ruined people’s perception of a drama, forcing me to continually defend the true translation.
That was the molehill I died on that day, and never again did I touch DramaFever. I feel bad that it eventually got unceremoniously shuttered. But I don’t think I’ll ever forgive them for the “condom” incident.
2016: Free Solo
Tumblr media
Dear My Friends (tvN)
For two years I’d been happily working on one episode a week, sharing a show with someone else, until I was asked if I’d like to tackle a show by myself. I wasn’t sure how I could handle it, but I had the time in my schedule so I said, “Sure, why not?”
I was originally going to recap Another Oh Hae-young, but there was a last-minute switcheroo, and I’m so incredibly glad because this is perhaps my favorite recapping experience of all time, even more so than Misaeng. There was something so special about the luxury of having an entire show to myself, especially one with such a fantastic cast of characters and thoughtful themes. I didn’t have to try and figure out if I agreed with another person’s take -- it could all be my opinion.
Is that arrogant? Perhaps. But it was also therapeutic, as it reminded me once again how incredible and amazing dramas could be, and the privilege I had to share such an exquisite and thought-provoking drama with the rest of the world.
Tumblr media
The Good Wife (tvN)
Surprisingly, this was what I had really wanted to recap that year, and the true reason I got Dear My Friends, since it aired just prior in the same time-slot as The Good Wife. I was desperate to have this show, willing to do anything to get it because I needed to see Jeon Do-yeon back on the small screen, to see Yoo Ji-tae smolder, to know how Korea would adapt such an ambitious show.
And I wasn’t disappointed! This is, perhaps, my favorite adaption of another work of art that I’ve seen in dramaland. It remained true to Korean sensibilities, but it also properly felt like The Good Wife. The cast was phenomenal. The costumes were exquisite. I wished I could spend more time in that world.
But I was also thankful, because without The Good Wife, I would have never have had Dear My Friends.
2017: Serial-Killers Are Cool
Tumblr media
Voice (OCN)
I can’t remember how I got assigned to this. Maybe it was a scheduling thing. I do know that I really, really wanted it, since it would be Handsome Oppa’s first drama appearance in three years.
But it started me down a road of recapping a lot of serious and serial-killer-centric shows. Except for the times when I’d beg for a break and tackle something lighter, I was generally assigned the darker mystery shows with meaty plots, since apparently I had a knack for condensing complicated shows into something that made sense. (Also literally darker, and I eventually learned to automatically brighten every screencap I posted. You’re welcome.)
Not only did I love working on something with Handsome Oppa, I also had fun recapping the start of what would eventually become OCN’s stock-in-trade -- creepy serial killers. At the time, Voice shattered OCN’s viewer ratings (which would then be shattered again and again as more people would tune in to OCN shows). But Voice really helped put OCN on the viewership map -- as well as catapult Handsome Oppa into the public eye and lead him to a path of getting to choose whatever script he wanted to work on.
(Okay, maybe I made that last bit up, but he did begin to garner a larger following and remind everyone that just because he was gone from dramaland for so long, he hadn’t lost his acting chops -- or charisma -- or cheekbones.)
Tumblr media
Black (OCN)
Oh, this show. It was basically my whole life while it was airing (well, the non-day-job part of my life). Each episode was over an hour long and jam-packed full of details that were pertinent to the story, and I had to somehow condense that all into 3000 words or less (I was not always, ah, successful...). It felt like I was back in recapping bootcamp, but the dial had been turned up to 11.
I’m weirdly proud of what I produced (although you’ll never get me to reread my old work). It was one of the most challenging shows to work on, but in the good way, not the Trot Lovers way.
Until the ending, that is. Sigh. That ending will live in infamy. I still, to this day, will get a few comments on the finale from people who watched it on Netflix, went searching online for an explanation of the end, and then discovered that they were not alone in being confused by the utter wtf-ery of the last twenty minutes.
2018: Fighting For My Love
Tumblr media
Misty (JTBC)
So, Dramabeans kind of disappeared for a few months. Well, the site was still live. There were a handful of recaps. But... it basically just... stopped.
Those of us on the other side know about as you do as to why that happened. Minions are kept in the dark just as much as anybody, it seems. All we knew is that we weren’t being assigned anything and we seriously wondered if the site was going under, since adsense has become worthless these days.
But Mary and I kept talking about how much we adored Misty and were sad that we couldn’t talk about it with the world (and convince them to watch it with us), so we pleaded and begged and got the go-ahead to do a kind of chatty “open thread” which has apparently been a spring-board format for other shows. We didn’t get paid for this, and we were totally fine with that. We just wanted to provide some kind of content (while swooning over Kim Nam-joo’s pantsuits!).
Tumblr media
Let’s Eat 3 (tvN)
This was my first real assignment after the dead period, and I once again got to do full recaps (with pay!). I started watching, thinking I’d merely tolerate the show (since I loved the first season vastly more than the second season), but it turned out to be my favorite of the three. Plus it felt fortuitous that the series I had submitted my application would be a series I’d work on four years later.
Sometimes it’s nice to spend time with a character you met years ago, to see them grow, to see how they became what they became. Drama trends (and love interests) will come and go, but Goo Dae-young’s love of food (and love of explaining the proper way to eat food) will never change. It was a really comforting drama for me to spend my summer on, and I’ll remember it fondly, even if I’m forever sad that it had to suddenly wrap-up two episodes early.
2019: Ten Years Later
Tumblr media
Item (MBC)
This was the Trot Lovers of 2019. It was a nonsensical disaster.
I also had the added chaos of my real-life job -- one very different from the one I had when I was working on Trot Lovers -- as it began to increase exponentially in responsibilities and in stress. I reached a breaking point where I began to hate opening my computer where I’d have to spend hours attempting to explain a show that I wanted nothing to do with. I was miserable and depressed and couldn’t do it anymore. I never before asked to be taken off a show because I hated it so much, but there’s a first for everything.
Tumblr media
Her Private Life (tvN)
I actually haven’t finished this show -- I’ve yet to watch the last two episodes. But I’m including it because, well, I didn’t finish any other show in 2019 except for Item.
As some of you may know, this has been a difficult year. It started with the unexpected stress of my job, when we suddenly lost one of our directors who passed away, and another director was let go (in a complicated situation that is ongoing, but the important thing is that it was during our busiest time when we really couldn’t afford to lose anyone), and another director left for a different job and I was basically the one to pick up all the pieces she left behind. It was exhausting and we were all past the breaking point but somehow miraculously holding it together.
I was looking forward to finally getting a much-needed vacation in September, and then, well, you all know how that went: the first night, on our layover in New Zealand before what was supposed to be three weeks in Australia, my father was taken to the hospital, and then, two days later, he passed away. Life has gotten even more chaotic and stressful and bizarre since then.
So no, I haven’t finished this drama, but it was one of the most wonderful moments of the year for me, watching this fizzy rom-com with my favorite actor, where he got to be charming and handsome and charismatic and finally kiss the girl he loves and have her love him back (and not die or be dumped, as he had been in so many dramas that had gone before). Lion Oppa was everything my heart could desire, and living in his world helped me endure the insanity that I wish I’d known would seem so much more tolerable than what would eventually befall.
Her Private Life reminded me of when I first fell in love with dramas ten years ago, when I would giggle and be delighted by the charming nonsense on screen -- of beautiful people falling in love and fighting against the obstacles between them (some more ridiculous than others, perhaps, but there are always obstacles), and ending up happily ever after. Pure escapism, of the frothiest kind.
A Drama-filled Decade
So, after ten years of dramas, what is the takeaway? What have I learned?
I suppose I’ve learned to trust my instincts and put more faith in writers and directors than actors. That analyzing dramas is fun, and it’s even more fun sharing it with others, and sometimes even more fun if you get paid to do it -- but everyone eventually reaches a breaking point. That I’m too earnest and optimistic to embrace a life of snark. That I want every drama to be good but most of them aren’t, except sometimes they are. That I’m not even sure which genres are my favorite; I just know what I don’t like.
That dramas are best as escapism, and not as work.
I don’t know how many dramas I’ll watch in 2020. I haven’t paid any attention to what’s airing, and I’m okay with that. Perhaps I’m entering a new phase in my life, or perhaps I just don’t have the capacity to escape right now.
But I am pleased to have had dramas in my life, and to have eventually made them my hobby. I’ve met a lot of amazing people and made some genuine friends through a shared love of dramas (or, at times, a shared hatred). I’m honored that all of you are still here and following me, even during this period of fandom silence.
May 2020 treat us all better, and may Kim Do-woo finally write another script.

✨🏳️‍🌈 Deities, Saints, Crystals, and Herbs For All Your Gay Magick Needs 🏳️‍🌈✨
Tumblr media
Note: This was originally posted on my blog, themysticbitch.wordpress.com.
Happy Pride Month, my loves! June is upon us, which means it’s all gay, all the time for the next few weeks. Being queer is a big part of my life and my identity, so I wanted to do something special for Pride. The end result was my most recent video, which you can watch here.
In that video, I try to get through a ton of information in as little time as possible, so I decided to post a written version here for anyone who wants a more solid starting point for incorporating these deities, saints, herbs, and crystals into their own practice. I’ve tried to be as inclusive as possible here — if I’ve missed something that seems obvious to you, please let me know in a comment so I can update the list!
Spiritual Patrons For LGBTQ+ Folks
Patrons For WLW:
Artemis (Greek goddess): Artemis is considered a “virgin” goddess, but it’s important to note that the word “virgin” had a different meaning in Ancient Greek culture. The one thing we know about Artemis for sure is that she was not romantically interested in men, for whatever reason. Artemis swore never to marry or have sex with a man, and she lead the Hunters of Artemis, a group of all-women warriors who spent their days hunting and roaming the forest. She is associated with the moon, archery, the forest, and the hunt. Some of her common symbols are bows and arrows, stags, hunting dogs, and the moon. She was worshiped by the Romans as Diana.
Freyja (Norse goddess): Freyja is a Scandinavian goddess of sex and sexuality, as well as sorcery, wealth, war, and death. I decided to include Freyja in this list because she is associated with sex and sexuality, especially of women, but is not associated with pregnancy or motherhood like many other sex goddesses are — her children are rarely mentioned in the surviving myths. All we know about her husband is that he was lost, leaving Freyja single for all intents and purposes. She is noted for being bold in her sexual pursuits, sleeping with whoever she pleased. She is a goddess for any woman who wants to get in touch with her femininity and sexual power, regardless of sexuality. Some of Freyja’s common symbols are gold, amber, cats, and falcons.
Saints Perpetua and Felicity (Catholic saints): Perpetua and Felicity were African Christians who were persecuted by the occupying Roman government for their faith. Perpetua was a noblewoman — Felicity was one of her slaves. The two women were arrested together and sentenced to prison — eventually they were publicly executed. Some of Perpetua’s letters to family and friends survived, so we actually have a firsthand account of her imprisonments. From these letters it is clear that Perpetua and Felicity were very close, and historians have long speculated that they may have been romantically involved. Today they are considered unofficial patron saints of same-sex couples, especially women. You can buy medals and prayer cards for both of these saints from online Catholic stores. Like all Catholic saints, they can be honored with a white candle and/or Three Kings incense (this is the incense blend used by churches).
Patrons For MLM:
Apollo (Greek god): Apollo was the twin brother of Artemis, and has a similar history with the LGBTQ+ community. The Ancient Greeks had a very fluid attitude towards sexuality, but today we would probably classify Apollo as either bisexual or pansexual. There are myths that explicitly mention him having male lovers. Apollo was very close with his sister, Artemis — perhaps an early example of MLM/WLW solidarity? Apollo is associated with the sun, prophecy, healing, and the arts, especially music and poetry. Some of his symbols include the lyre, a laurel wreath, a bow and arrow, and a python. He was also worshiped by the Romans.
Freyr (Norse god): Funnily enough, we have another brother/sister pair. Freyr was the brother of Freyja, and he shared her association with sex and abundance. Freyr was a primarily agricultural god, and was believed to bring spring rains to nourish the growing crops. One of his strongest associations was with male sexuality — in fact, he was often depicted in art with a giant, erect penis! Like his sister, Freyr was more associated with the act of sex itself than when what comes after. Freyr is an excellent god for any man looking to get in touch with his own masculine power, regardless of sexuality. Some of his symbols are a boar, a ship, and a phallus.
Saint Sebastian (Catholic saint): Saint Sebastian has long been considered an unofficial patron of gay men, and the story behind this association is a wild ride. Unlike Saints Perpetua and Felicity, there is no historical evidence that Sebastian was queer. He was a martyr, and according to legend he was executed by being bound to a tree and shot with arrows. When the Plague hit Europe, Sebastian was often called upon for protection — this was the beginning of his popularity as a saint. Baroque artists created a lot (like, A LOT) of paintings of Sebastian that depicted him as a beautiful, muscular young man, clad in a loin cloth, gazing passionately up at Heaven as he was pierced with arrows. As you might imagine, he became something of a sex symbol. In fact, Sebastian became so popular with the gay men of Italy that he had his own cult! You can buy medals, prayer cards, and candles dedicated to Saint Sebastian, and again, he can be honored with a white candle and/or Three Kings incense.
Nonbinary and Genderfluid Patrons
Loki (Norse god): Technically, Loki is a jötunn (a frost giant), not a god, although he was formerly allied with the Aesir and lived in Asgard. Loki was a shapeshifter, and was known to take female forms as well as male. In fact, he once took the form of a female horse and gave birth to a foal! Loki is probably one of the most explicit examples of a genderfluid deity in European mythology. However, some pagans choose not to work with Loki. He is sometimes considered a “negative” god because of his association with mischief and chaos, and because he ultimately betrayed the Aesir. It is up to you whether to work with him or not, although I would definitely advise you not to bring Loki into a circle with any of the Aesir.
Odin (Norse god): The common image of Odin in pop culture is of a fierce warrior-king, but this is not historically accurate. Odin was often depicted as an old man in traveler’s clothes, and he was associated with several cultural taboos. Though he is definitely identified as masculine, Odin ruled magick, which was considered feminine in Scandinavian culture — it was dishonorable for a man to practice such “woman’s work.” Odin knew that some things transcend gender, and he is a wonderful patron for anyone looking to break away from traditional gender roles. Besides magick, he rules war, strategy, death, astral travel, and knowledge. Some of Odin’s symbols are ravens, wolves, his spear, and his armband. I personally burn mugwort incense when working with Odin. He was also worshiped by Germanic and Anglo-Saxon peoples as Wodan.
Archangel Gabriel (an angel honored in Christianity, Judaism, and Islam): Gabriel is usually identified with masculine pronouns, and “Gabriel” has became a common man’s name in many countries — but in art, Archangel Gabriel is often depicted with feminine features, and sometimes even with a clearly feminine body. This is because Gabriel is strongly associated with the Divine Feminine and with feminine energy in general. Gabriel rules pregnancy and female reproductive disorders, and is responsible for the care of children. He is also associated with the moon, a common symbol of goddess energy. Angels have no true gender, so they are all androgynous in nature, but Gabriel is especially so. Because of this, he is an excellent patron for nonbinary people. Some of Gabriel’s common symbols are a trumpet, a white lily, the moon, and water. Incenses associated with him are frankincense and camphor.
Honorable Mention: Santa Muerte (Mexican deity/folk saint): Santa Muerte may not be trans, nonbinary, or genderfluid herself, but she’s a fascinating figure and deserves a place on this list. Nuestra Señora de la Santa Muerte (“Our Lady of the Holy Death”) is a personification of death, and is called on for healing and protection by her followers. What is especially interesting is that Santa Muerte is considered a protector of all outcasts from society, including all LGBTQ+ people and especially transgender people. She is even invoked in same-sex marriage ceremonies in some parts of Mexico! Her worship has recently spread to the United States, with churches dedicated to her in California and New Orleans. You can buy statues and altar candles in her image. Common incenses for honoring Santa Muerte include copal, myrrh, and rose.
UPDATE: I’ve been told that worship of Santa Muerte is part of a closed cultural tradition, and is therefore not open to people outside of Mexican and Mexican American culture. I’m leaving her in this post because I still find her story uplifting, but I do ask all of my followers to please be respectful of this beautiful goddess and her cultural roots. I think we can find hope in her role as a pro-LGBTQ+ deity, while respecting that she is not ours to worship or work with.
Correspondences For LGBTQ+ Issues in Meditation and Spellwork
As I mentioned in one of my previous YouTube videos, magick is the act of manipulating the spiritual energy that permeates the universe. Every part of the natural world, including plants and minerals, has a different type of energy associated with it. If you want to connect with a certain energy (like the energy of romance, for example), you can surround yourself with things that correspond to that energy to make the connection easier.
A lot of the love spells that I’ve been able to find online use correspondences that have a strong association with straight romance. Obviously, some symbols are universal, but I wanted to find some correspondences that can specifically be used for manifesting same-sex romantic relationships. Here’s what my research turned up:
Correspondences For Love Between Two Women:
Rose Quartz: Rose quartz is considered the stone of unconditional love, and it can be used universally to attract love of all kinds, not just romantic. I think this crystal could be especially useful for women seeking a feminine partner, because it has a very strong feminine energy. Rose quartz is also strongly associated with self-love, and teaches us the important lesson that the best way to attract love is to start by loving ourselves. You could incorporate it into a love spell, wear it as jewelry, or meditate with it to align yourself with its loving energy.
Moonstone: Sometime’s called “the woman’s stone,” moonstone is very strongly associated with womanhood and with feminine sexuality. It is said to attract love and to increase passion in existing relationships. Unlike many other crystals associated with sex, moonstone has a very peaceful energy and can be used to calm anxiety or to soothe tense situations. Moonstone is a great stone for any woman looking to reconnect with her feminine power, or for increasing passion in an existing relationship between two women.
Violets: Violets have been associated with romantic love between women since the Ancient Greek poet Sappho of Lesbos (from whom we get the words “lesbian” and ‘sapphic”) used them as a symbol in poems dedicated to her female lover. In the Victorian era, queer women would give their lovers bouquets of violets instead of roses. (In the Victorian “language of flowers,” violets represent faithfulness.) In magick, violets are used to attract love and to increase luck in romantic endeavors. They are also edible — why not brew a violet tea and drink it as a love potion?
Correspondences For Love Between Men
Malachite: In many ways, malachite is the masculine counterpart to rose quartz. Despite its strongly masculine energy, malachite is deeply healing and works to open and unblock our heart chakra, as well as to heal any heartbreaks we may not quite have gotten over. Malachite is also considered the “salesman’s stone,” and can be used for situations where you are trying to “sell yourself” to a potential lover by giving a good first impression. Some people are afraid to use malachite because it is “toxic” — although it does contain copper, which can cause health problems if consumed in high amounts, wearing malachite or holding it against the skin is definitely not enough exposure to cause an issue. As long as you don’t eat your malachite or dissolve it in water, you will be fine.
Red Jasper: This is a wonderful stone for men looking to recharge their sexual energy, or to spice up an existing relationship. Jasper in general is associated with courage and charm, and for this reason it is often recommended to people involved in the performing arts, like actors and singers. Red jasper has a strong masculine energy, and is associated with the root chakra and our connection to the earth. Red jasper is an excellent stone to work with if you are dealing with sexual anxiety, or anxiety over being open about your sexuality. Meditate with it to feel more grounded, courageous, and stable.
Green Carnation: Although the connection between green carnation and queer men is not as ancient as the connection between violets and queer women, it is still well established. Oscar Wilde, who was openly gay, is said to have begun the trend of wearing a green carnation as a signal that he was seeking a man as a lover. Other men in Victorian England began to follow the trend, and the association still stands. In magick, carnation is said to enhance creativity and magickal power. Since it acts as an amplifier for other magickal energies, a green carnation can make any love spell more effective, especially for men seeking men.
Crystals and Herbs For Trans and Nonbinary Folks
Note: I said this in my video, but I feel like it bears repeating here — magick is not a replacement for mental healthcare. If you are struggling with gender dysphoria, I strongly encourage you to seek professional counseling if at all possible. None of the herbs, crystals, or spells mentioned below (or anywhere in this post) are intended as a replacement for medical or psychiatric treatment. If you are already taking medication of any kind, be sure to research potential interactions before ingesting any herb for magic or holistic purposes.
Chrysocolla (for trans and nb women): I first learned about chrysocolla from an episode of the Fat Feminist Witch podcast called “Not Every Goddess Has a Sacred Womb.” That episode discussed issues with equating womanhood to motherhood (or even just to having a uterus), and chrysocolla was brought up as a crystal with strong feminine energy that wasn’t tied to uterine health. This is a great stone to meditate with to get in touch with your own goddess energy, without any biological associations. Chrysocolla is also strongly associated with new beginnings, which may make it a useful spiritual tool for anyone who is just coming out of the closet.
Green Tourmaline (for trans and nb men): Much like malachite, green tourmaline is strongly associated both with masculine energy and with the heart chakra. It is a stone of masculine authority, and can be used either to get in touch with your own power or to help in overcoming emotional issues related to a father figure in your past. Tourmaline in general is said to convert negative energy into positive, which makes it ideal for overcoming any difficult situation.
Damiana (for trans and nb men AND women): Known by the scientific name Turnera diffusa, damiana is currently being clinically studied for its ability to balance hormones in all sexes. In holistic healing, damiana is commonly used to treat sexual problems — this is another one that may be useful for increasing sexual confidence. It is also said to help relieve anxiety and to decrease stress. Damiana is available both as herbal supplements and as a tea.
Angelica or Dong Quai (for trans and nb women): These are two different names for Angelica sinensis, which has been used in folk medicine for hundreds of years. It is often used to relieve symptoms of menopause because it increases estrogen levels when taken regularly. Angelica is also a powerful magickal herb, and is popular in American folk magick. It is sometimes associated with Archangel Gabriel, who I mentioned earlier, and is used for protection and healing. Angelica is available in teas and supplements, though it is usually marketed as “dong quai” in these forms.
Ginger (for trans and nb men): Lab studies found that ginger significantly increased testosterone levels in male rats. Human studies are still underway, but the research that has been done indicates similar benefits for humans. In magick, ginger is considered a magickal “power up” of sorts, and is often added to spells to add power or to speed up results. You can use ginger to increase your own masculine power, and to infuse yourself with a little bit of its sweet and spicy energy. Ginger is available both as a supplement and in teas, and of course it can be used in cooking.
This ended up being a way bigger project than I originally planned, but my research turned up so much good information that I wanted to share. I hope that some of this is helpful to all of my fellow gay witches out there, and I hope that you all have a magickal and blessed Pride Month.
P.S. I’ve actually written three different love spells based on this research. One is for men seeking men, one is for women seeking women, and one is for people who either don’t associate strongly with any one gender or don’t care about the gender of their partner. I was going to include those spells in this post but after seeing just how much info I had to cram in, I decided to give them their own post. You can find those spells here.

What's your opinion on the child characters of the show? What do you think makes a good child character or not?
This is a tough question, mostly because it’s more complex than it initially appears to be, but I have answers!
The child characters of WCtH are a solid meh/10. I mean this as a collective whole, of course: “the children” are slapdashed third and fourth placers at best when it comes to continuity, continuum, and consideration. They don’t come across as important to the story, they don’t feel important to the other characters, and I think it could be successfully argued that there isn’t really a solid child to child connection at the core, either.
Most child actors aren’t wildly amazing; they don’t have the skills and experience yet to be so. That’s fine. I think all the kids who have been on the show did their best with what they were given, which…sometimes wasn’t much. Go back into S3 or so and listen to some of Cody’s lines and then come back and tell me to my face you think the actor is bad! Nope, some of the lines he was given to say are just terrible, and there’s only so much anyone can do with bad dialogue.
The biggest issue I have with the children on the show is the lack of continuity. This is the kind of community where people spent their whole life here (as long as a job remains for the breadwinner of the family). It’s bad enough that the adults come and go, but it’s worse for a teacher to do that.
I don’t have the connections to do a deep-dive into the show’s spending, but if I had to wager a guess, Hallmark wasn’t really willing to keep on the same core group of children (and pay them for staying on, vs. looking for other roles or just paying starting wages to random children). Maybe I’m too cynical to assume everything boils down to money, but let’s be honest with ourselves: it usually does.
The unfortunate side effect of Elizabeth’s Carousel Classroom is that the children as a collective whole suffer from it. Their bonds don’t feel strong, their stories weaken, their closeness in S1 in the wake of tragedy becomes meaningless.
The first season did reasonably well with its children because the group remained the same and many stories revolved around the different ways people in town (children, adults, newcomers) dealt with/handled/considered the mining disaster.
It gave us all kinds of little stories that felt interconnected. Molly’s relationship with her daughter Rosaleen. Rosaleen’s friendship with Anna. Cat’s relationship with her children and her husband, the children’s relationship with one another and other students, with Jack and Elizabeth, and with their father. We established these stories, made them (and the relationships portrayed within) meaningful, and these things made the viewer care and feel invested.
Then those children were stripped away, making all the work put into them…dust in the wind.
Cody was one of the only children who showed up and meant something and maintained a role on the show with consistency. You could argue that Emily and Anna have been around longer, but their roles have been nil for more seasons than not, and with Cat gone, Emily’s presence no longer makes sense, anyway. A shame, because later seasons did make the effort to build her up.
Becky was an abysmal failure of an addition to the show, if only because her role was eliminated before it even really began. She was then used as a prop in one of the holiday movies (to stir up imaginary drama against Henry), and promptly disappeared forever. Harper’s entire personality was written in a contradictory way by writers who don’t actually talk to each other. Robert barely has a personality when Cody isn’t around. Opal’s entire personality is “cute widdle kid” even though the actress is much older and is probably capable of much better work than making cute faces and saying things that would be cute for a four year old to say. (At this point just write her as being 8 or 9 and still wanting to carry around a teddy bear. IT’S FINE.)
Allie took the show by storm because she feels like a fairly realistic child character, and she’s been given development. If the show keeps that up, she’ll at least remain interesting and likable. If they let her down, though, her role will stagnate and people will start hating the character/role she plays just like they started side-eyeing Cody.
As to what makes good child characters? The same thing that makes good characters in general, honestly.
Good writers. Consistent characterization. Character development that feels like a natural evolution due to their environment/circumstances. Attention to detail. Playing to the actor’s strengths and weaknesses.
They had all the time in the world to build Cody up and give him storylines that felt meaningful, but they made him “comically” bad at baking and treated him like an 8-year-old character and not a pre-teen. They eliminated his dog from the show with no real warning (when they could have given us an emotional goodbye storyline that would have resonated with most viewers because we have pets of our own that we’ve had to say goodbye to). They relegated him to background discussion and a trophy child for Abigail instead of a human being in her life she cared about and loved. They never followed up on Cody’s desire to stay in contact with Frank, either—though I’ll admit they weren’t given much time for that, they sure put in the time to give Abigail another love plot in S6 that nobody wanted, so make of that what you will!
I’ll shill Road to Avonlea until I’m dead. It’s an ensemble show like WCtH with two core groups within the show:
The Children
The Adults
They even have a third group (The Elderly) though to a lesser extent. This is a period drama that takes place before WWI on Prince Edward Island, and primarily deals with shenanigans and emotional connection between people. It’s wholesome family fun and manages to be extremely heartfelt while also giving you plenty to laugh about.
The first thing I have to admit is that Road to Avonlea was undoubtedly better funded than WCtH, and double+ the length per season, so they had a lot more room to play around in. Throughout the series we follow a group of children (largely siblings, cousins, and friends from their one-room schoolhouse) and their parents (many of whom grew up together or have histories with one another). The children don’t change too much over the many years of the show, and this helped immensely in giving the viewer continuity. First of all, it’s safe to like the characters because they’re around for the duration of the show (and in fact, we follow most children to adulthood); secondly, these children are written as…children? But their role in the show is JUST as important and JUST as impactful, and JUST as hilarious (when applicable) as those of the adults! When one of the actresses left (over a pay issue, I believe), they replaced her and it worked fine.
What made this show work so well was its dedication to telling good stories, not its random abundance of amazing child actors. The actors weren’t THAT amazing (though I’ll not dunk on any of them, particularly Sarah Polley who went on to help produce the Alias Grace miniseries on Netflix) but they had heart, their stories had heart, and the writers made the effort to write the children as children. (The older children acted like older children. The younger kids acted younger. IT MADE SENSE.)
And I think most importantly the children made mistakes and learned from them. WCtH could certainly take a page out of Road to Avonlea’s book, or at the least recognize where their own writing strengths lie and stick to them. I don’t need child storylines in WCtH, so if they’re going to bother with them at all, PLEASE just make them good! (And don’t tempt me to make a RtA blog. It’s my favorite series of all time.)
The short version of all of the above: writing characters like people is what makes good child characters; they’re exactly the same as adults in that regard.
WCtH has mediocre child characters at best right now (with Allie being the only good one, just by virtue of being the only one who has gotten any real material to work with).

Week 1 - September 5
Tumblr media
Hi! Welcome to my COMM 3P18 Audience Studies blog for fall 2019. Every week I will be documenting what I have learned in lecture, seminar, and from the readings.
Week 1 focused mainly on introducing us to the course and going over the syllabus but we also started getting into some course content.
The concept of an ‘audience’ has evolved throughout history as technologies and societies progress. At its simplest, the definition of an audience is the act or state of hearing (”Audience”, n.d.). This definition makes it seem as though we never stop being part of an audience. However, audience isn’t an identity that follows us everywhere. Instead, it is more like a performance that people put on in certain situations which in turn creates a representation of audience. In other words, audience, as we will study it, is formed from the different interpretations and imaginings of audience throughout history.
We had a brief discussion about the ways audiences have changed throughout ours and our parents’ lifetimes. From the development of technology, audiences have grown from a small group of people physically together to millions of people connected across the globe. This development led to the emergence of super-niche audiences gaining traction online.
This specific topic of niche audiences connects with me because I used to be part of a niche online community dedicated to making stop-motion videos of American Girl dolls (embarrassing, I know). When I tell people about this now, they’re often surprised that such a community even exists - but it does and it has a pretty big following.
Tumblr media
The whole existence of this community relies on the existence of social media. When I was part of it, it existed solely on YouTube, but it has spread to at least Instagram. Without a site like YouTube, the audience for American Girl dolls and video-making would be restricted to groups of people who physically knew each other. The community spread through people, primarily teenage girls, being able to film and upload videos made in their homes for sometimes thousands to see.
My mom played with dolls when she was younger too, but she never had the opportunity to connect with others through it in the way I did. I was part of something so much larger than just friends playing dolls after school.
The audience of American Girl dolls was created within home-videos of kids just playing around, but it was used as a way to let girls be girls. The videos were an outlet for its audience to enjoy being young while actually creating something.
While I often cringe looking back at my time as a part of this audience, I know that it helped me become the person I am today. It gave me an outlet to create,  share and connect with like-minded people. I didn’t know anyone else in real life who was part of the audience. There was no one in my physical life who I could share my interests with.
I look forward to being able to continue my understanding of audiences and how they have evolved throughout history. It will be interesting to learn about how context and interpretation can change the way an audience functions. Each week I will document what I have learned in class and how I can relate to it.
See you next week!

Feeling a bit sad and nostalgic
I doubt I will ever be part of another fandom in a serious way during my lifetime. I doubt that I will find another place where what I have to say and what I creatively have to offer will get me enough recognition to feel that I’m part of something. I know I will never follow press for another entertainment property. I know I will never care about the personal lives of the production members again. I know I’ll never go to another convention and pay serious money to meet an actor or take a photo. I’m fairly certain that I will never develop friendships based from an original interest in a show again. I’ve already lost nearly all of those that I had.
When I came in during 2012, there were a core group of Carylers that were running the big content circulation engine, U.S.S. Caryl. Now the blog has been static for 3+ years, and only 2 of the staff are left. One of them is and always has been multifandom in a serious way. The other drops by now and again because her life has demanded that she do other things - and well she should. I have two other people I interact with who were here before me. One used to produce the very best photo edits. Now...she is rarely here. The other has all but given up on the show. There are certainly people that I follow and care about - but I’m an introvert at heart, and I’ve messaged them rarely, if at all.
The people I came in with are basically all gone - or else they have moved to other platforms. I entered into a collaboration for one of the most successful AU fanfiction stories ever...and I don’t even know where my collaborators are. One of them was a person who called me “family.” Another was so like me in our fandom interests that we had a ship name together.  My favorite fanartist left to go to medical school. There’s really only 1 person left, and I don’t think she watches episodes unless Carol has the dominant thread.
I have watched at least 2 additional waves of fans come through, and most of them are gone as well. Those that are left...mostly stopped watching and only live vicariously through the few gifs that circulate. There are at least 3 of those folks that I still interact with...and all three do primarily things other than TWD. I don’t think any of them even watch it anymore. My co-admin on @carylnetwork has disappeared without a trace.
I was never here just for a single ship. I have even been skeptical of the wisdom of Caryl based on the characterization of each of them. I have happily dabbled in multi-shipping for Carol at least. I have wrestled with the conundrum that is Reedus. I have fallen in and out of love with other characters and ships on the show. I’ve run blogs dedicated to Caryl and Greemes, 1 to Melissa McBride, 1 to Melissa & Carol, 1 to Norman & Daryl, and even a couple of very short term blogs (McReedus and a Portal for new shippers). It’s been a big investment.
I learned to make photo manipulations because of this fandom. I learned to make gifs because of this fandom. I wrote my first drabbles and mutli-chapter fanfiction for this fandom. I came to tumblr specifically for this fandom. I even made a presentation at an academic conference about this fandom. When I was at the very worst of my depression - when it was 4 years of unrelenting darkness - I felt that I had little more than this fandom. I’m very glad I found it here.
I’m not leaving yet. I’ll never feel anything but happy when I look back. I might even decide to “retro” fan it all again. Maybe I’ve just got to play a little bit in order to shake off the unrelenting despair I hear day in and day out about this thing I love - or maybe that I loved. I’m not sure.

Quite honestly following new people, especially making new mutuals, is stressful for me because it feels like a blood oath. (I’m still following several mutuals who have been inactive for years.) Most of the people I've followed recently are friends from the group chats I’m in. The vast majority of the people I follow are mutuals or blogs dedicated to one specific thing. Otherwise, my requirements generally are: posting quality content I’m interested in (right now, primarily theatre) and being age 20 or older. Bonus points if you live in NYC because I’m always looking for friends lmao.

She is, and I haven’t (I wasn’t able to make it the two days she went on). A friend of mine has, though.

INNER WORKINGS / HEADCANONS ( 1/? ).
In no particular order, below are some of the many headcanons I've been wanting to type out. This makes my first official headcanon post on this blog of mine. Since that's the case, I'll give a quick preface. To make it clear, this is the muse's mindset. Everything here is from her point of view. It's a close look inside of her mind and heart. With the exception of other muses capable of reading thoughts, most of these things are things other muses are / should be unaware of. She doesn't wear her heart of her sleeve, and is difficult to understand because of that.
Relevant trigger warnings I can think of: abandonment, alcohol, death
During her time at Beacon, she was a notorious thief. Or rather, she would have been were she not so skilled at concealing her acts of thievery. From textbooks to entire meals, her first response - her predominant instinct - when faced with a lack of something required was: scrutinize her surroundings, discover who nearby possessed that which she needed, and covertly misappropriate it. While she mastered the art of stealth at a young age, that’s not to say that no one at all ever caught onto her. It’s just that very few managed to take notice of her inclinations. Also, she actually found a certain immature satisfaction in setting back huntsmen and huntresses. Since huntsmen and huntresses were inconveniencing her tribe - the very people she was loyal to, bothering them in turn felt like seeking vengeance in a way and she’s not at all opposed to seeking revenge. She never has been and never will be.
Part of the reason for her overall bitterness is her profound care for Summer Rose. She was one of the first people to show her genuine warmth and unconditional kindness. It was like being exposed to sunlight after b\growing accustomed to murky skies. Losing her made the world a bleaker place, and caused her cynicism to fester. This actually ties into another thing I’ve been wanting to cover. Before Beacon, it was her and Qrow working together. He was her most dependable ally, most cherished friend, trustworthy confidant, and the closest thing to family that she knew. Together, they’d been tasked with learning about those who caused problems for the group of individuals who’d raised them in order to put an end to it and protect their tribe. Then, she ended up meeting Summer and Tai. It took a good while ( primarily because of Raven’s thorny personality ), but she eventually formed meaningful bonds with them. She watched as Qrow abandoned their first cause / the path that had been established before they entered the schooling scene. She watched as he became enamored with this perilous plight of Ozpin’s and abandoned the people who seemed to have earn his loyalty first. The people she believe he should have continued to offer his loyalty to above all - after her. She watched as Summer’s demise became the price of Ozpin’s interest in their team. Before that, she watched as Tai too sided with a cause she’d found to be futile, daunting, and costly. In the end, due to her perception of these events, she continues to blame Oz for all of it - for taking so much from her. Thus, the reason why she’s so distasteful of him. She believes Tai blindly followed Oz, she believes Summer’s kindness - however inviting and heartwarming - played a significant role in her untimely demise, she believes Qrow willingly betrayed her and the Branwen tribe in favor of supporting Oz in something deadly, and yet she also blames Oz. Yes, there are other reasons why she despises Ozpin, but it’s primarily because of this unknowable hurt that she’s experienced because of those things that she carries such abhorrence. She also blames Salem and this war at large for Summer’s demise. The war has stolen so much from her already that she doesn’t want to lose more because of it and she feels that the last substantial thing that she has is the tribe. It’s why Vernal’s passing wounded her so deeply. She’d formed a particularly close bond with Vernal despite initially intended to keep her at arm's length as she typically prefers to do for multiple reasons. To watch this person who bypassed her barriers and earned a place in her heart fall in the crossfire of an endless battle being waged by two people she believes see others as mere pawns is both enraging and heartbreaking.
Something that actively contributes to the jaundice that she carries in her heart to this day is this apparent tendency those she's connected to have to use her for some reason or another. Whether it's to acquire information pertaining to some element of the war or to exploit her semblance, it always seems to her as if she's purely being seen for what she possesses or what she's capable of rather than who she is. It's one of the numerable reasons why she can treat most people so coldly. Her experiences have instilled in her a seemingly imperishable belief that most people are inherently opportunistic. The only people who have proven that it isn't the case with every living being are Tai, Summer, and Vernal. It's also because of this that she feels alone more now than ever.
When it comes to liquor, she has an outstanding tolerance. It takes a lot to get her drunk. She prefers hard liquor and red wine. Part of the reason why these preferences came to be is that she's always wanted to be perceived as tough and independent. She also started drinking at a young age, but she never developed the same habits as her brother. She doesn't drink as frequently, it's easier to spot her consuming coffee to tea than liquor. Nowadays, she drinks when alone for the most part. A big reason for this is that she doesn't trust anyone and is so cautious that she actively avoids taking unnecessary risks around strangers or those who particularly come across as ruthless or coldblooded.
She has a tendency to dispense with pleasantries and common courtesy. It's all just frivolous nonsense to her when it's more than likely the person is just trying to determine how best they can use her to fulfill their own needs. She prefers to cut to the chase. If she's thanking someone of her own volition, it speaks volumes of her feelings toward the person receiving her gratitude. On that note, it takes a lot to get her to apologize to someone or admit that she's wrong or has done something wrong. She clings to her convictions and does everything for a reason. Admitting a mistake would invalidate her actions and produce guilt that she'd have to live with. She's someone who runs from her guilt because it can interfere with her actions and worsen the struggle she faces in controlling her emotions as opposed to enabling them to control her. On that note, without going too deep into it since I plan on dedicating an entire headcanon post just to this topic at a later time because there really is so much to be said, she has mixed feelings about her absence in Yang's life. Again, she has a reason for everything and believes she did what was best. The best chance any child of hers could have had at having a good childhood was away from her and away from the tribe. She knew that despite his naivety and foolishness, Tai would be able to offer the kindness and gentleness that she couldn't provide. In addition and secondary to that, she knew that she wouldn't have been able to offer the time and energy required of her as a tribe member while simultaneously fulfilling the duties involved with motherhood to the best of her ability. Her loyalty lied with her origins - with the Branwen tribe, and she was determined to not let her schooling go to waste. In other words, she wanted to remain faithful to the mission she'd been tasked with prior to heading to Beacon. In her eyes, it was the best solution to enable her to remain faithful to those who'd first earned her loyalty, to enable her to provide the best possible chance for her daughter to have a good future, and to sufficiently distance herself from the disconcerting truths she'd discovered during her brief time of assisting Ozpin. Although she still believes there was no better option, there's something indescribable within her that leaves her uncertain. In addition to deliberately allowing Yang to knowingly take an item that would undoubtedly endanger her, that distinct possibility of there having been a different way - a better way - to have handled things in the past prompted her to apologize toward the conclusion of Volume 5's final events. Both things persuaded her to apologize.

SBS Spotlight: WPC Executive Services
WPC Executive Services
Our business relies on small business: that is why we came up with the small business spotlight where we select one small business a month to feature on our website and all of our social media platforms.  We like to find small businesses that have been looking for unique ways to stay afloat, businesses powered by passion and not profits.  The businesses where the owners are truly invested in what they have and only want to see their dreams prosper.  We want to support the real small businesses of America.  To be featured as part of our Small Business Spotlight, please reach out to us either by calling or texting 862-803-0225, by emailing us at [email protected], or by visiting us on our website at www.justork.com.  Our own unique way of giving back to the community we serve; the spotlight is a free post to our website blog and social media channels, with additional paid marketing features available as well for extra promotion.
Justork Lifestyle is back with the Small Business Spotlight.  This Saturday we are featuring a self-inspired self-starter:
Anthony Steele is the owner WPC Executive Services; a company started by his father back in 1999.  Based out of Riverside, CA, WPC Executive Services strives to adapt to the ever-changing business environment. Read how the company has adapted and spread its services for over two decades! We got a chance to speak with the owner to give us a sneak peak of what he does different to result in such longevity.  From the owner himself! Read more below;
Our business has been around since 1999, and we provide tons of services for small businesses!
We have conference rooms where clients are able to rent by the hour for training, seminars, or meetings. Primarily used with court reporters and lawyers to host depositions.
We also have each room equipped with videoconferencing capabilities to have people be able to call in from home or their office rather than drive far to make it to the meeting
We have mailbox services, which goes above and beyond what you can get at the post office! We offer a flat rate for all of our locations (now there is only two, Riverside & Santa Ana, but there is no increase if we add more). We also give discounts on our other services by being a mailbox member, and give 1hr of free conference room rental per month.
There are no limitations to package sizes or business names you want to receive in our office.
We have our calendar administration, where we help coordinate your appointments on your calendar by calling/emailing clients. This has been a great tool for when our clients go to a networking event and collect business cards; they write on the back what they spoke about or what the client was interested in and we reach back out with either an email, or phone call, and put them down on their calendar. Great tool for following up!
We also have our phone answering services, where we have a number dedicated and answered in your business name, along with a voicemail, M-F 9:00 - 5:00 live receptionist answering.
Finally, we also offer bookkeeping & payroll. We organize your bank statements and put them in the right categories to make sure our clients get the most tax deductions when they file their taxes at the end of the year. Our payroll service also submits all of the payroll taxes automatically so you never fall behind, as well as offering direct deposit and time tracking. We can also help with setting up clients with group benefits such as life, health, dental, & vision insurance.
I am also a licensed insurance agent, and have been able to help our clients get their own life insurance policies, as well as worker’s comp, liability, auto & home, etc.
Right now, we grouped all of our services together in a Virtual Assistant Package that drops down the rates as well.
Some background on myself:
My father started the business 20 years ago, but I took over 4 years ago, and since then we were able to open a second location in Santa Ana, offer more services at a lower rate, as well as seen a 300% growth in the business based on our customer service, which we are really proud of.
I am also a soon to be dad, with our baby being born within the next 3-5 weeks! So very exciting stuff has been going on this past year.

How one can Run Advertising and marketing Group Conferences That Do not Suck
New Post has been published on http://tiptopreview.com/how-to-run-marketing-team-meetings-that-dont-suck/
How one can Run Advertising and marketing Group Conferences That Do not Suck
Tumblr media
Conferences suck. They’re time for folks to keep away from doing precise work, stare blankly at one another, throw in generic feedback to seem like they’re paying consideration, and for those who’re fortunate, perhaps come out with some depraved pocket book doodles.
Is that how folks understand your marketing conferences? I hope not, as a result of they do not truly must be that approach.
Tumblr media
Flip your marketing conferences into one thing helpful by — you guessed it — creating compelling content! (Oh my gosh, inbound marketing ideas work in actual life, too!)
As your workforce grows, it is vital for everybody to get in a room collectively and discuss what they have been engaged on of their nook of the world. So to make sure these marketing conferences aren’t blocks of time your workforce dreads, make notice of the following tips for methods to make marketing workforce conferences really helpful to your staff.
How one can Run an Efficient Assembly
Whereas this put up will primarily give attention to marketing conferences, I wish to deal with a team-agnostic part about efficient conferences as an entire.
As I stated above, conferences could be a grandiose waste of time. It is tempting to run your work by others, collect suggestions or affirmation, or just keep away from the robust stuff by calling conferences.
I am right here to let you know — do not do it. Step one to working efficient conferences is to solely schedule conferences when completely needed.
Quarterly conferences to report on firm progress and vital information? After all. Month-to-month conferences to the touch base on KPIs and recruit assist for tasks? Sounds nice. Weekly conferences to report on present obligations and asks? I am torn on whether or not this one is important, however for big groups or groups with new staff, this might be a great transfer.
Each second in a gathering is time away from heads-down work, the work that arguably strikes your corporation ahead. Are conferences essential to take a break, contact base, and rally along with your workforce? After all.
Secondly, to know the effectiveness and effectivity of a gathering, ask your workforce. Ask, “is [meeting] helpful for you? If so, what are its top two benefits for you?” This will help you perceive what proportion of your groups finds worth in your conferences and what parts or agenda objects might be able to be eliminated to save lots of time.
Talking of agendas, let’s talk about subsequent what your marketing assembly agendas ought to resemble.
Advertising and marketing Assembly Agenda
Whether or not your marketing workforce assembly is weekly month-to-month, this part will clarify the content material it’s best to each single time. We additionally advocate making a slide deck that you simply undertaking to your workforce in every assembly so you’ll be able to all comply with together with every agenda merchandise.
Advertising and marketing Assembly Agenda Instance
For each assembly, it’s best to have a devoted agenda slide that lays out three issues:
What might be mentioned in at this time’s assembly
Who might be main every dialogue
How a lot time is allotted for every dialogue
Check out one in every of our current marketing workforce assembly agenda slides:
Tumblr media
Outlining who’s speaking, what they’re protecting, and the way a lot time they’ve to debate it can assist forestall the assembly from getting derailed. It’ll additionally forestall folks from delving into unproductive conversations which are finest had at one other time and place.
As for what parts needs to be in your marketing assembly agenda, let’s talk about what to cowl throughout your marketing assembly.
Overview Vital Metrics
Do a fast assessment of your most vital marketing metrics. These should not be area of interest metrics, like electronic mail unsubscribe fee, social media attain, or weblog subscriber development; save these to your month-to-month conferences the place you assessment month-over-month progress.
These needs to be the metrics your marketing workforce is measured on. In different phrases, on the finish of the month, what metrics will let you know whether or not the marketing workforce succeeded?
Whereas each enterprise will probably assessment one thing totally different relying on their enterprise mannequin, listed below are some concepts for you:
It is vital to assessment your workforce’s vital metrics as a result of these are the way you’re measured onas an total marketing workforce. And for those who do not all understand how you are faring because the month progresses, particular person contributors cannot do something to step up and assist your workforce’s numbers enhance.
A Little bit of Training
Advertising and marketing conferences needs to be a wholesome mixture of state-of-the-union content material and academic content material. Every week, have a pair workforce members current briefly about fascinating tasks they have been engaged on. This serves two functions: it lets folks know what their workforce members do all day, they usually get to study one thing new!
Give it some thought … would not it’s fascinating for a blogger to study a little bit bit a few PPC experiment? Or for a social media intern to study in regards to the outcomes of the most recent electronic mail A/B test?
Sharing lessons from projects helps everyone expand their knowledge base, sidestep landmines if a project backfired, and implement effective new techniques that they never knew worked.
Boom — everyone leaves your weekly meeting a smarter, better marketer!
The Nitty Gritty Retrospective
Your meeting should also contain a review of the projects each employee (or if you’re a larger marketing department, each team) worked on last month/quarter/year, plus the results they’ve seen.
This is good for a few reasons. First, it keeps everyone accountable knowing that each meeting they need to stand up in front of their colleagues and explain just what they do all day. Second, everyone gets to learn from what everyone else worked on and become generally better marketers. Third, it helps everyone identify how individual teams are faring, and what projects they’re doing to improve their own metrics.
For example, if you have a social media team, this is their opportunity to report on the success of every single social network they manage. How is their reach faring? How much traffic are those networks sending to your site? How many leads are being generated? Why are some networks more successful than others?
While your weekly meetings (if you have them) may focus on more high-level, team-based metrics, a monthly or quarterly meeting is a good opportunity to do a deep dive into the channels and metrics that enable the entire team to meet its goals.
How You’ll Meet This Month’s Goals
After the retrospective, each employee or team should also present on their individual goals for the month or quarter, and how exactly they will meet those goals. This is not the time to be generic.
Teams should explain, point by point, everything they’ll be doing during the time period to meet the metrics they’re measured by.
For example, let’s say the email marketing team is responsible for driving more reconversions this month. What exactly will they do to, well, do that? Well, that slide might have some initiatives like A/B test email copy with and without a P.S., anoffers analysis to determine which offers convert at the highest rate, list segmentation experiments, tailoring lead generation offers to align more closely with personas to improve CTR … the list could, and should, go on.
This is also a critical time in your meeting for feedback. Build in time during every presentation — at least 5 minutes, more if you find you need it after a few meetings — for each team to solicit feedback on their proposed projects. This will help individual teams from getting derailed on projects that might not help them meet their goals, or perhaps other members of the marketing team have fantastic ideas that the teams hadn’t even thought of yet!
Big Wins
A little bit of recognition is a good thing. Set aside a couple of minutes — come on, you can’t find 5 minutes? — to showcase some of the amazing things your team members or department as a whole have accomplished.
This could be anything from press coverage, speaking engagements, engaging with power players on social media, a smash hit blog post, an email that received unprecedented click-through rates … you get the point. It’s easy to harp on where you’re falling behind, but a little cheerleading can help rally your team and remind them just how successful they can be when they put their mind to it.
Solicit Help
Everyone should have the opportunity to solicit help from team members during your marketing team meetings. The larger your team gets, the easier it is to work in silos — but everyone has their own little super powers that sometimes go unnoticed.
If there is a platform during every meeting for employees to share (if they need it) something they need a little help with, you may find others pipe up with a simple solution or resource that solves the problem.
There should also be a few minutes built into each presentation for a little feedback. If someone is presenting on the progress of an ongoing project, part of “soliciting help” may be getting feedback on what steps to take next. For example:
Is this project still worth pursuing?
How should we measure the success of this project?
Does anyone have a solution to a major roadblock?
So while there should be a few minutes at the end of each meeting dedicated solely to giving employees the floor to solicit help, time for feedback should be built into presentations if the presenter needs it.
6 Tips for a Productive Marketing Meeting
Stay on time.
Don’t allow computers.
Build in time for a break.
End every meeting with action items.
Consider your remote folks.
Review metrics and celebrate wins.
You know what content to include in your marketing team meetings. Now, let’s discuss how to make those meetings run smoothly. These tips, despite helpful content, can make or break the usefulness of any marketing meeting.
1. Stay on time.
Start on time, you end on time, and honor the budgeted time set for individual presentations. I know it’s hard, especially when there’s a good discussion going on, but delegate a timekeeper who lets presenters know when they’re coming up to the end of their allotted time.
If you’re vigilant about this, people will start to self-edit their presentation, and meeting-goers will self-censor their comments, only contributing what truly needs to be said.
2. Don’t allow computers …
… said the internet marketing company. Seriously though, only the meeting coordinator should have a computer to pull up the agenda and presentations.
If others bring their laptops, you’ll find people can’t help but check their emails, get little bits of work done, and chat online, no matter how riveting the presentations are.
3. Build in time for a break.
Your weekly meeting may only be 30 or 60 minutes, but your monthly meeting could take a lot longer. In that case, build in time for people to get up, stretch their legs, go to the bathroom, get coffee, whatever.
You’ll start losing people’s attention otherwise.
4. End every meeting with action items.
Whatever you talked about during your meeting should be revisited briefly at the end of the meeting, preferably by the meeting coordinator. If you spend 20 minutes talking about how to solve your lead shortage problem at the beginning of your 90-minute meeting, there’s a good chance some of the to-dos and initiatives trickled out of people’s minds.
Make sure there’s someone taking notes throughout the meeting, and allot five minutes at the end of every meeting to review what people should start doing once they walk out of that meeting room.
5. Consider your remote folks.
Whether your entire team or just a few members are remote, it’s important to consider the remote meeting experience. As a remote worker myself, dialing into meetings as one of the few remote attendees takes a bit to get used to.
Research helpful technology to mitigate the gap between in-office and remote workers. Zoom is clearly an ideal selection, however different know-how like The Meeting Owl by Owl Labs could also be a great match to your workforce. At the beginning of every assembly, take a look at your connectivity and stroll by your slides to make certain the message is evident for people at dwelling.

Most significantly, collect separate suggestions out of your distant workforce members to know their struggles and accommodate their requests.
6. Overview metrics and rejoice wins.
You already know these marketing metrics you determined to measure and assessment within the first part? Those that famous your workforce’s progress all through the month?
Now’s the time to see whether or not you hit your targets or not! When you hit your targets, do two issues: rejoice, and clarify precisely why you hit these targets. That second one is crucial. Somebody ought to clarify what marketing actions strongly contributed to you hitting, say, your leads aim. That approach you’ll be able to repeat these actions this month!
Conferences Do not Must Suck
Conferences are a needed a part of work. They seem to be a time to rejoice wins, ask for suggestions or assist, and get aligned along with your workforce and firm.
Sit down along with your colleagues to audit your assembly schedule and see the place you’ll be able to trim time or minimize conferences altogether. Efficient and environment friendly conferences are way more vital than conferences for the sake of it. Your workforce will thanks.

HOW WE SEE LIFE INFLUENCES WHAT WE DO AND SAY.
“Positionality is the social and political context that creates your identity in terms of race, class, gender, sexuality, and ability status. Positionality also describes your identity influences, and potentially biases, your understanding of and outlook on the world,” (gender and sexuality dictionary, 2020 ). Everyone has a unique positionality, even twins that are born and raised within the same social and political context they will have different positionality. Its important to be aware of your positionality, especially as a health care professional, “as one’s positionality impacts on how one approaches work with client’s, community engagement, and policy (Susanne Klawetter, 2016). In this blog I will be discussing the different factors that have influenced my positionality and how it impacts on my engagement with client’s. I will also discuss the importance of considering the positionality of the clients I work with.
Tumblr media
I am a 23 year-old black South African women, who was born and raised in a Township called Umlazi. I am a Zulu girl with a Sotho surname. My parents work for the government, they separated when I was in grade 4 and my father married another woman. I have 4 half siblings from both my parents, I am my mother’s last born and my father’s first born. I was one of the few kids in my township who had the financial opportunity to attend private schools. My background, identity, experience in life, values and assumptions have influenced how I perceive and see the world. My positionality has been influenced by the above factors and more. I will elaborate on the most significant factors as to how they have influenced my positionality.
Being a woman in South Africa is frightening, especially with the high rates of gender-based violence (GBV). I am always in constant fear that I could be the next rape or murder victim, simply because I am a woman. The GBV statistics are horrific and, “the levels of gender-based violence in South Africa is among the highest in the world,” (Arderne, 2019). The statistics on GBV state that, “2930 women were murdered in 2018/2019, 110 rapes are reported on a daily basis, there are 56 murders of women daily and 19.3% of victims are women and children,” (Arderne, 2019). The shocking part about South Africa is that the police are more concerned about hunting people with alcohol and cigarette during lockdown instead of helping to fight GBV. I never go out at night, go to the mall alone or meet up with any guy from the internet because of my fear for men. This has influenced how I approach men at work, I tend to avoid working with male patients because of my fears of them. Male clients tend to always want to ask you out or look at you inappropriately or make shocking statements such as “come to my room so we could have therapy”. Professionally this has taught me that I need to be firm and assertive when working with such client’s, not to sweep such behaviours under the carpet and report them if necessary.
Tumblr media
Umlazi is one of the 4th largest townships in South Africa, mainly black people from low socio-economic income reside there. I was lucky to have the opportunity to experience the best of both worlds, as I went to private schools. I understand what life is like for the marginalised group (township) of people and the non-marginalised group of people (urban and suburbs). Townships “struggle with devastating social ills including alcoholism, family violence, incest, sexual assault, fetal-alcohol syndrome, homicide, and suicide at startling rates,” (Poupart, 2003). Research states that “experiences of racisim and internalized oppression contribute to current social ills,” (Poupart, 2003) in these marginalized groups. Township people strongly believe in their ancestors and culture, their positionality for their social ills are most likely viewed as their ancestors being unhappy with them instead of the internalised oppression. Majority of the client’s we work with in public hospitals are from townships or marginalised groups. Having the background experience and understanding of township people, has enabled me to understand what influences their perception of their health. Personally, I have learnt that its important to ensure that I don’t attack my clients for their beliefs because that’s their positionality. Academically I have learnt to incorporates the client’s beliefs and values into my treatment goals, to ensure that our sessions are client-centred.
Tumblr media
The apartheid era influenced our positionality a lot as South African’s, unconsciously white people are still seen and approached as superior than other races. The black clients would give attention, respect and listen to the content being expressed by my white colleague as compared to me and my black colleague. Black people are often viewed as lazy, incompetent and less important. Our black adults struggle more with this internalised oppression as compared to the younger generations. As we go to school with white children and we get to realize that no race is superior than the other. Professionally I have learnt that in any environment as a black person you have to work 10x harder to prove your worth, as my skin tone labels me as incompetent. My good work ethic and dedication to my craft is highly influenced by that positionality.
Tumblr media
“Occupational Therapy is a person-centred professional, whose primary focus is occupation. As individuals and the occupations they engage in are primarily products of sociocultural environments, ignoring these environmental influences and their meanings is probably to miss the point of intervention, ” (St-Clair, 2002). Considering the clients positionality and the factors that influence their positionality is very important, as it ensures that therapy is client-centred and culturally appropriate. “Acquiring a better awareness of a patient’s health beliefs may help healthcare providers identify gaps between their own and the patient’s understanding of his or her health situation,” (Better M. Kennedy, 2017). This shows compassion which equates to the perception of effective communication and higher quality of care. Little things such as not making an appointment during prayer time for a Muslim client, not saying a Zulu man is ridiculous for associating his illness to a message from his ancestors, not forcing a client with low income to modify and adapt his home to suit his disabilities.
Positionality is very important as it influence how a patient views their health and the treatment they receive, therefore is it vital that I always “view patients’ behaviours within a cultural context- as it’s all about perception. Patients who are struggling with medication adherence may not just be lazy or forgetful, but may have a negative attitude that stems from a past experience, familial beliefs or financial barriers, “ (Care, 2009). Therefore, it is important that I gather my clients background information so that I could be able to identify and understand what exactly influences my client positionality towards their health. This will “help maximise engagement and encourage participation in our programs”. Most importantly it will increase the client’s motivation to attend therapy as they won’t feel discriminated or stigmatized because of their positionality. It will prevent the refusal of services following recommendations, prevent misunderstanding and will increase the client’s healthcare seeking behaviour. Research also states that “patient satisfaction, commitment to treatment, and perceived outcomes of care are greater when the healthcare provider and patient achieve shared understanding on issues such as the pateint’s role in decision making and the treatment plan,” (Better M. Kennedy, 2017).
