A little while ago the bird feeder company Kingsyard gave me a couple of their feeders. At first I didn’t have them hanging in a great place for pictures but I moved one into the lilac and it looks great. This morning the house finches have been spending a lot of time there.

The first two lend themselves well to warrior names-- I'll say Pepperseed and Willowbranch. Cordelia's picture looks strong and elegant, and Bridget looks cozy and friendly. I'll call them Stormstrike and Snowbelly.

Vails

I haven't actually talked about it here a lot, partly because I try not to do heavy history stuff here - this blog is meant to be a hobby, after all - and it's something I'm frankly too passionate (obsessed) about, but my main area of historic interest and focus, especially when it comes to my own personal research, is the history of domestic service. It is not an exaggeration to say it is my life's work. Another reason I don't write about it often is I don't really know where to start. My breadth of knowledge on the subject is quite broad, so there's a lot I could say, but I think I'll try to write some small things about specific aspects of it. Vails were, in the 18th (and I believe also 19th) century, basically what we could today call tips, often paid to servants. And when you read things written by the 'master class' of people being served, while they're obviously biased and exaggerating, it does become clear that servants rather enforced them. There wasn't a guild system for servants like there were for trades, but there were informal clubs and groups, and this is one of the ways they seem to have acted together, almost as a form of unionization. There's a letter to a British newspaper where the write says that he estimates many servants are doubling, tripling, or even quadrupling their annual salaries through vails. I could write more but I'll just transcribe some of my favourite passages on this subject from the book Life in the Country House in Georgian Ireland by Patricia McCarthy: I will add too, while this is specifically talking about paid servants in Britain, you do see vails paid to enslaved people in America as well. Probably not as often, but Philip Vickers Fithian, who wrote a diary about his experiences in Virginia in the 1770s, writes about similar things of the enslaved people at the plantation he's staying at expecting their "Christmas boxes" of vails, although they weren't quite as beholden to the actual date of Boxing Day.

... The customary scene in the hall, as their guests waited for their carriages or horses to be brought to the door, embarrassed many. [Marshall, Domestic Servants] Hosts feigned ignorance of their guests' fumbling in their pockets to find shillings and half-crowns to distribute to the servants, who had lined themselves up expectantly. Whether the motive for allowing the practice was to salve the collective conscience of the employers at paying such low wages is not clear. [Bridget Hill, Servants: English Domestics in the 18thc.] It was not confined to great houses, but was also expected in more modest establishments, although the amounts given were less. It was also not only expected on departure from the house of a friend: vails were disbursed by 'house tourists' to whichever servant showed them around - in most cases an upper servant.

An army officer described how much his visit to the house of a friend would cost him: 'The moment your departure is known, all the domestics are on the qui vive; the house-maid hopes you have forgotten nothing in packing up, if so, she will take care of it till you come again; this piece of civility costs you three ten-pennies; the footman carries your portmanteau .. to the hall, three more; the butler wishes you a pleasant journey - his greate kindness in so doing of course extracts a crown-piece; the groom brings your horse, assuring you 'tis an ilegant baste, and has fed well' - three more ten-pennies go; the helper runs after you with the curb-chain, which he has 'till this moment carefull secreted - two more; making a total of seventeen, or, in English money, upwards of fourteen shillings. A heavy tax for visiting a friend!' [Benson Earle Hill, Recollections of an Artillery Officervol. 1]

Richard Griffith from Bennetsbridge, Co. Kilkenny, complained in c.1760 in a letter to hise wife that 'an heavy and unprofitable Tax still subsists upon the Hospitality of this Neighbourhood .. in short while this Perquisite continues, a Country Gentleman may be considered but as a generous Kind of Inn-holder, who keeps open House, at his own Expence, for the sole Emolument of his Servants .. this Extravagance is not confined, at present, solely to the Country .. ; for a Dinner in Dublin, and all the Towns in Ireland, is even in a Morning, with a Person who keeps his Port, you may levee him fifty Times, without being admitted by his Swiss Porter. So... I shall consider a great Man as a Monster, who may not be seen, 'till you have fee'd his Keppers.' [R. and E. Griffith, A Series of Genuine Letters Between Henry and Frances, vol. 4]

Swift gives similar suggestions in Directions to Servants: 'By these, and like Expedients, you may probably be a better Man by Half a Crown before he leaves the House.' He further urges those servants who expect vails 'always to stand Rank and File when a Stranger is taking his Leave; so that he must of Necessity pass between you; and he must have more Confidence or less Money than usual, if any of you let him escape, and according as he behaves himself, remember to treat him the next Time he comes.'

Card money was particularly lucrative for butlers and footmen - so much so that, in London at least, such menservants refused service in houses where gaming parties were not held. [Marshall, Domestic Servants - Two footmen at the court of Queen Anne, Fortnum and Mason, used this perquisite as capital to begin their grocery business in London. Country House Lighting 1660-1890, Temple Newsam Country House Series No. 4] But it was vails that finally undermined the authority of the employers, who virtually allowed servants to dictate whom should be received, and then pretended not to notice when the servants extracted money from the departing guests.

In the London Chronicle a correspondent wrote in 1762 that 'Masters in England seldom pay their servants but in lieu of wages suffer them prey upon their guests'. George Mathew of Thomastown, Co. Tipperary, a man famous for his hospitality, was one of the first employers to ban the 'inhospitable custom' of giving vails to servants, and to compensate them by increasing their wages. This was apparently as early as the 1730s. His servants were warned that, if they disobeyed, they would be discharged. He also informed his guests that he would 'consider it as the highest affront if any offer of that sort were made'. [Anthologia Hibernica, I - No date given for this account, by 'Grand George' Mathew, who died in 1737, was the man described, who was host to Jonathan Swift at Thomastown in the 1720s, a visit described by Thomas Sheridan in A Life of the Rev. Dr. Jonathan Swift] A crusade against the giving of vails began in 1760 in Scotland, where seventeen counties issued appeals to abolish them. Four years later the movement had spread to London, resulting in riots there by footmen, the servants who stood to lose the most. [Marshall, Domestic Servants] It was probably at about the same time that employers from a number of counties in Ireland agreed among themselves to abolish vails. [Griffith, Series of Letters..., IV, 'An Agreement entered into among the Gentlemen of several Counties in Ireland, not to give Vails to Servants'] Like George Mathew before them, they decided to increase staff wages in an effort to compensate them for loss of earnings. One of them was Lord Kildare: in March 1765 he issued a directive from Carton to members of his household, stating that 'In Consideration of Vails &c, which I will not permit for the future to be received in any of my Houses upon any Account whatsoever from Company lying there or otherwise I shall give in lieu thereof... five pounds per annum each to the housekeeper, Maitre D'Hotel, cook and confectioner; three pounds per annum each to the steward at Carton, the butler, valet de chambre and groom of the chambers, and two pounds to the Gentleman of Horse. ...

And I will conclude with this funny account, about the penalty for being known amongst the staff to be a spendthrift, from the same book: ...

An unfortunate guest in England in 1754 found his punishment [for not giving vails] truly humiliating. 'I am a marked man,' he wrote, 'if I ask for beer I am presented with a piece of bread. If I am bold enough to call for wine, after a delay which would take its relish away were it good, I receive a mixture of the whole sideboard in a greasy glass. If I hold up my plate nobody sees me; so that I am forced to eat mutton with fish sauce, and pickles with my apple pie.' [Quoted in Marshall, Domestic Servants]

A Spector masquerades as a man as it tries to put together the perfect recreation of the script.

Character Description: The once-unenthused actor chosen for the role of the phantom. Over the time of rehearsal, it seemed that the actor hadn’t been keen on the choice of role or that she’d gotten in the play in general. Rumors spread she had simply tried out as a joke between her and her friend who was the head of the light crew. However, after a strange event that happened after one rehearsal, they slowly over time started to act more and more akin to their role. While some people shrugged it off as some strange form of method acting, it's hard not to question the drastic change in personality.

Warnings: This character is possessed throughout the entirety of the plot line. They also commit multiple murders, kidnapping, stalking, etc (basically a good chunk of scenes from the play). ·:¨༺ ♱✮♱ ༻¨:·

S Tier: “Christine” - {Ivy Nettle/@manor-tea-time}

3rd in line for the role of the ingenue, it is a wonder she made it to the stage. Bright lights of center stage await them along with a foreboding ghostly presence.

Character Description:

A part of the stage crew that was forced to take up a part of the show after the last understudy quit the production for mysterious reasons. She’s desperately trying to figure out how exactly to not let the show down and to make up for any lost time. However, as more and more incidents occur, the more on edge and freaked out she becomes.

Warnings: This character gets kidnapped and stalked like in the original play.

A Tier: The Vicomte - {Finality/@finality-and-origin}

A talented new actor that appeared out of the framework, starring as Raoul in their debut show.

Character Description:

A sweet soul, albeit anxious for their debut show. Unsure of what exactly to expect from the audience and what they hope to be the beginning of their acting career. As many of the events caused by the phantom occur they start becoming more and more on edge as they question if staying in the production is actually worth it.

A Tier: Primadonna - {Tatya Baudelair/@tatya-time}

A well seasoned actress playing the role of Carlotta. 

Character Description:

While playing the role of a primadonna, they seem to be the furthest thing from it. Often giving small tips/advice to help any of the newer actors/actresses who need it (ex. How to help with stage fright, remembering cues, etc). The main reason she tried out for this show was to support her childhood friend who got the role as Pianji.

Warning: This character gets killed off at some point in the storyline.

A Tier: Aspiring Ballerina - {Bridget Meyler/@candymaker-idv}

Chosen from a local dance studio, this ballerina hopes to plant the seeds to blossom her career.

Character Description:

Playing Meg in the production, this ballerina has more or less put themselves in overdrive to not way down any other people in the cast. Often secretly taking small acting lessons from The Mademe to keep up with everyone else. During the events the phantom causes, she’s one of the first people to put together how the events are following the plot of the play.

A Tier: The Madame - {Rue/@voidproject}

Reprising their role as Madame Giry, this well seasoned actress returns to the stage for a small reunion for her fans.

Character Description:

The Madame is a fairly well-known actress, rumored to be looking towards retirement as their shows start dwindling for a variety of reasons. This rumor seems to be more and more confirmed as they start giving pieces of their acting knowledge to the acting troop’s aspiring ballerina.

B Tier: The Baritone - {Matilda/@idv-ask-the-horatius-siblings}

A local actor that was chosen for the role of Pianji.

Character Description:

A very passionate local actor who dragged their friend, Primadonna to try out with them for the production. Extremely excited when they both were able to get in as a duo. 

Warning: This character gets killed off at some point in the storyline.

B Tier: Chief of the Flys - {Wayne Strickland/@manor-tea-time}

A local actor who was chosen for the role of Buquet.

Character Description:

An actor, while not much into the acting scene, wanted to support their daughter, one of the background ballerinas. They’re a fairly gentle soul who seems confused at all of the normal theater shenanigans but has the right spirit.

Warning: This character gets killed off at some point in the storyline.

B Tier: Building Manager - {Miss. Silhouette/@manor-tea-time}

“Gossip is worth its weight in Gold”

Character Description:

The building manager is a fairly greedy and money oriented person. During the events caused by the phantom, they insist that the show must go on for the payout rather than trying to keep the actors safe.

B Tier: Stage Manager - {Beth/@ask-idv-baker}

“The show must go on!” seems to be a redundant saying now.

Character Description:

An overworked stage manager who is slowly questioning why they chose to work for the theater. They’re essentially the equivalent of a tired parent who has to kinda deal with whatever the phantom throws at the show.

B Tier: Maestro - {Exile/@oletus-carousel}

A haunting melody echoes throughout the theater as the Maestro plays their song.

Character Description:

A fairly new Maestro to the musical scene, this being their debut show. They’re a fairly eccentric personality who takes every musical cue in the show extremely seriously. After all, they wish everything to be perfect for opening night.

Warning: This character gets killed off at some point in the storyline.

B Tier: Prop Master - {Kitty Nutella/@idv-artists-trio}

The prop master checks through their list. A noticeable amount of props have gone missing.

Character Description:

A secluded and unsociable person, the prop master often sticks to their own world of prop making. The only times that the acting troupe has seen them talk is to clarify certain things to the director before leaving once more. They’re the 2nd person to notice the strange patterns of the phantom.

B Tier: Light Crew - {Alden West/@ask-idv-astronaut}

“Perhaps you can scare a ghost away with a little illumination! Gentlemen!”

Character Description:

An experienced part of the backstage crew, they’re fairly confident in the abilities of the actors and stage-crew. They’re noted to make small jokes of their time in school with the actor that plays the phantom, but overall seem proud of their sudden seriousness they have taken to the role (at least till the incidents occur).

B Tier: Retired Understudy - {Vanadis/@idv-fifis-toybox}

The understudy knew once the strange occurrences started happening that their role wasn’t worth their life.

Character Description:

Known as the real primadonna that was formerly on stage, it was a strange occurrence when they quit the show for reasons she wouldn’t elaborate upon. With no one to fill in her place, she left the stage crew scrambling for someone that could fill in her spot.

Warning: This character was kidnapped and stalked like in the original play. It is also implied that this character was almost killed a few times.

I, a card carrying chronic daydreamer, had my cute little fantasy world interrupted today by the "girl posting tiktoks from his house" rumor. Anyway I looked for said tiktoks like...... evvvverrryyywhherree (i guess i like the pain idfk) and i can't find even a ghost of a hint of something like that. I could be wrong, maybe you've seen them for yourself idk? but if alleged tiktok girl does exist, he doesn't follow her on insta (like 99% sure). And without seeing the actual videos/having more context i just feel like...... A: she could be anyone. a friend of a friend who hung at his place one time. a cousin. his homie's gf. his landlord. a ghost. idfk. or B: the videos literally don't exist and someone just made it up to watch us squirm

also i wondered for a hot minute if he was dating elena chiriac or someone named bridget (trying to be a little more nondescript bc i don't think she intends to put herself in the public eye), but both of them have boyfriends (boyfriends who are not christian lol). receipts on that!

anyway I wasn't sure if i should send this; on the one hand i worry i'll be adding fuel to the fire, but also i hate seeing so many of my fav blogs in the puli sphere having to deal with fallout from this really flimsy claim sent by one random anon. now folks when we make claims it should be in this format, but yea, honestly im also a chronic daydreamer but these are actual peoples lives, so when they do something, its not our place to hate them, hate people involved, and i am a full believer never speculating until confirmation, seeing is thats how people get hurt. Thanks for answering. And just in case I want to be sure you know that I know you’re not blaming Beth :) I’ve been on your blog enough times to know you wouldn’t do that. I think the gif set as well as the juxtaposition of those scenes is very interesting. And I’m super happy that her parents were part of that convo. Rick needs adult guidance and he’s not been getting it from anyone so if we can at least end the season with the Chapels taking on a guiding role in his life that would be good.

Yeah for sure! Rick needs adults in his life so bad and Pat is not the man for the job. There is bts of Rick returning to the Chapel house with Bridget and James in different outfits, so there’s definitely more to the story there. Yeah I mean also in some way not to jump ahead of ourselves, but…Once Hournite gets together…The Chapels kind-of-sort-of-will be Rick’s parents in a matter of time ;)

I'm not trying to defend the anon, but reading through what you shared about Irish people and discrimination, the post specifically says that Irish people experienced racism, not discrimination.

And they've also used a GIF of WOC talking about someone calling her a Paki and her telling the white man he doesn't know what it is like, but the white man says he does know because he's Irish. He really can't understand.

But I do appreciate you discussing what Irish people have been through, especially since I am an English WOC and this is something I was unaware of.

A lot of that tumblr post is from 2012, which is probably why they use the term racism, although I don’t want to speak for anyone who posted, a lot of the blogs are long gone (the copy of it in my likes is from 2013, for context!). What I will say is that under some definitions of racism, it’s “the systemic oppression of a racial group to the social, economic, and political advantage of another” (Merriam Webster, Definition 2)

The discrimination against Irish people in the UK until probably the early 90s would have counted as racism. Irish people who moved there generally lived in worse housing and didn’t have a lot of ability to mix with English people (the rise of Anglo-Irish and London-Irish centres that still exist today are vestiges of this). They generally were employed in what were considered the worst jobs - builders, domestic servants, factory workers - and it was rare for them to rise above entry level work. Domestic workers in England (and the US) were often called a “Bridget”, because employers didn’t care to learn their staffs names, Irish people were just interchangeable. And anti Irish sentiment still draws political belief. Just look at former Home Secretary, Priti Patel, saying that if Ireland didn’t support the UK with Brexit negotiations they would threaten our food supply. For a country who was complicit in An Gorta Mór, that’s disgusting to happen. It did meet the standard of racism, but as now that term is more used to mean between people of different skin colour, I didn’t want to use it here, which is why I used discrimination.

At the time Bend It Like Beckham was released, we were about five years after the Good Friday Agreement. Peace was fragile. And the white character in those gifs, Joe, is an Irish man who grew up in London. He got the slurs thrown at him too, because when he was growing up he heard it all. He was called a Paddy, and judging by his accent probably a t*ig. You still see bonfires in Northern Ireland with “kill all t*igs”, or “K.A.T” on them.

That’s what it’s about. It’s about empathising with someone and you may not know exactly what they’re going through, but you’ve been through similar and know what it’s like. It’s not meant to belittle Jess’s (the woman in them, whose full name is Jasminder) experience in the slightest, it’s supposed to let her know she’s not alone. And in context it does!

If it was released today I’d agree it’d be pretty tone deaf, but for 2002 it was spot on. I do appreciate you coming here openmindedly, and thank you for the ask.

akjhdksjd you gave taeil the nicholas sparks adaptation. i haven't seen/heard of ALL of these movies, but most. some of these really brought me back (the house bunny!! the devil wears prada!) funnily enough i googled "fuck you dale" earlier today because i forgot what it was from. julien solomita used to say it a lot in his early blogs, too.

Yeah, I didn't notice I gave Kun, Taeil and Doyoung the most mom rom-coms I could have chose till I read it over. Kun was almost Bridget Jones's Diary, it made sense but didn't feel right. The notebook made more sense. And yeah movies I've watched is very limited I chose the most popular ones. Cause I mainly watch really weird indie movies and lifetime movies. Or movies like Thirteen, Virgin Su*****des,Welcome To The Dollhouse, just kinda dark movies I couldn't use. I have horrible taste in movies.

The Prequel to Bridget Jones’ Diary

It’s been a while since I last entered the right password on Tumblr wrote something worthwhile. Since then, I have:

Become a full-fledged vegetarian (for the most part, don't judge me)

Quit my job (use ‘em and leave ‘em!)

Unfriended my last remaining friend in the real world

Unsuccessfully joined a make-believe manga-inspired dating app

Not gone on a single date

I’m basically the walking, breathing, socially-challenged inspiration for the inevitable prequel to Bridget Jones’ Diary.

It’s hard to be a vegetarian in this house. Last time I asked mom whether the burger patty on my plate was vegan, she replied with, “Why yes – it’s 100% grass-fed.” Then, in response to my gagging horror, she followed with, “Your grandfather used to eat meat every day and he’s a 94-year-old marathon runner. You can’t even get up before noon.” Fair enough.

Failed vegan adventures aside, it’s interesting how often I keep coming back to this blog whenever I quit a job. Maybe I should rename it to Life Through the Eyes of a Quitter. It has a slight Lifetime Channel ring to it, doesn’t it?

Meanwhile, my dad’s business burnt down, my mom got a job, my sister’s pettiness levels have remained remarkably consistent, and my brother started college. My dad’s workplace catches fire and he keeps hustling while Janet from accounting can't give me the side-eye without making me break into sobs and quit. I would be disappointed in myself, but sleeping in feels too good, #sorrynotsorry.

I have also developed an Instagram crush on several guys who, after relentless stalking, I've found out are at least five years younger than I am. Is this what it feels like to be a cougar in the making? Is there a support group for this? This is not a rhetorical question.

Another way in which I have continued to regress in life—and made my college degree shrink in shame—is this: I signed up for singing classes. That’s right. My dream to successfully lip-sync to Britney’s Oops…I Did It Again will soon be replaced with successfully squeaking to Britney’s Oops…I Did It Again. It all starts with a tiny dream, a small glimmer of hope, and before you know it, you’re getting banned from your favorite karaoke bar. Baby steps, I tell you.

I can tell the next few weeks will not only be life-changing but will dramatically decrease my number of Instagram followers, and I can’t wait to share this unforgettable, very special journey with you all.

Ohio's GOP Is Being Even Worse To Trans People Than You Thought

While we were largely surprised by Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine's (R) veto of a ban of gender-affirming care, it was a calculated political move calculated as a win-win for bigots, and a lose-lose for everyone else. At the end of 2023, DeWine vetoed House Bill 68 "that would have restricted health care for transgender minors and banned transgender girls from playing on girls sports teams." As USA Today noted, House Bill 68 cleared both state chambers earlier in December and would have prevented doctors from prescribing hormones, puberty blockers or gender-affirming surgery before patients turn 18 years old. DeWine's veto seemed to lean heavily on the GOP doctrine of parental primacy and how parents should make choices for their kids -- which sounds reasonable, until you know how many LGBTQIA+ kids are abused or kicked out by their parents. (By the way, Adam and Bridget, a quick screw you on that score.) But that wasn't all that was going on. That same USA Today story -- quite a bit further down -- noted that "DeWine said this week he wants state lawmakers to draft a new version of the bill that" only "bans gender-affirming surgeries for minors." That wasn't all. As Jessica Kant noticed, on Jan. 4, " DeWine announced Executive Order 2024-01D. DeWine’s order, primarily being reported as simply a ban on gender-afffirming surgery under 18, contains provisions for the enactment of new regulations on care for trans people of all ages that constitute a de facto ban on gender-affirming care for the majority of trans people in Ohio." Specificially, that order proposes some new rules which would: - Prohibit providers from even mentioning where some gender-affirming care they can't get in Ohio may be available. - Mandate a comprehensive and burdensome mandatory care plan and layer of paperwork for any person seeking gender-affirming care, regardless of age - Requires any provider "that provides diagnosis and treatment for gender-related conditions" to annually "demonstrate compliance" by submitting "at a minimum" the entire care plan of the patient. Regardless of age. No, I didn't leave out who compliance is demonstrated to; it's not clearly laid out. However, in addition, those reports -- which remember, is the patient's entire care plan -- is required to be sent to the Ohio Department of Health. The. Entire. Care. Plan. Including details. For every patient seeking gender-affirming care in Ohio. Now that Ohio's legislators have doubled down on their bigotry and overridden DeWine's veto, that does not mean his additional proposed rules will automatically go away. With this, the GOP's political grift is almost complete. - The Ohio GOP has delivered their bigoted agenda, useful to attract hard-line loyalists and bigots. - DeWine gets to publicly oppose the bigoted agenda, and seem like the "reasonable" one for those disquieted by the open bigotry. - While the press focuses on DeWine's "disagreement" with the GOP rank and file, he quietly proposes farther-reaching restrictions and surveillance of trans folx. - The GOP uses their majority to override DeWine's veto. The grift is centered on the illusion that there was a disagreement at all. The illusion that there is any moderation in the GOP's attack on anyone they decide is too "different".
