the problem with adapting beartown (and the other two books) is that so much is lost when translated to film. there is so much internal dialogue and conflict. anyone adapting it needs to be willing to put in the extra work of showing how deep the different relationships go.

and tbh, the hbo adaptation did not do that. maya and ana barely interact. kevin and benji are perhaps the most deeply bonded characters in that first book. it's why benji choosing to side with maya (which he does without having to hear amat confess to what he saw i might add) feels like such a betrayal.

benji and kevin are best friends. soulmate level, one might say. benji is in love with kevin. but benji sides with kevin's accuser without question. he believes maya.

it's because benji knows kevin best that he knows that kevin is capable of rape.

you need all the internal drama, the deep facets of every relationship to fully get the story. it fails in its messaging without it

#benji might be one of the characters of all time for me tbh #and i felt like the writers of the show just did not understand what to do with him #the show had a lot of problems #some of them i could forgive if they just understood the assignment #but they didn't #i hope the series can get a good adaptation one day #but it would not be in any way a small undertaking #rape mention tw #beartown

my april tbr

i have been consumed by fredrik backman's books and i read beartown and us against you last month so i'm speeding though the winners. i literally cannot get enough of these characters and i'm going to be so upset when i finish these books

but i am slowly making my way through the pjo series. they're adorable and i'm lowkey sad that i wasn't able to read them when i was younger. i'm glad i could dice into that universe now though!

and of course stephen king, my peepaw, my favorite man. i'm about 40ish pages through thinner and from what i remember of the movie its not entirely the same idk tho bc that was literally forever ago

and lastly the audio books! i have abt 16 minutes left of horrorstor and it's going okay, not my favorite but i really do feel for the mc, amy. i am also aiming to get through how to sell a haunted house since i enjoyed grady hendrix's other work, my best friend's exorcism in the past

that's all i have really but feel free to let me know what you're planning on reading this month!

thanks for the ask! i'm going to give you anxious people by fredrik backman. backman is such an evocative writer, i'm usually not that into contemporary books but i've loved each and every single one of the books he's written. he's got a way of making you feel for the kost mundane of characters in a way that makes you realise no one is mundane - makes you love humanity for what it is, for the love and empathy that exists in most people, if you stick around long enough to look. this book begins with a failed bank robber taking all the people in an apartment-viewing hostage, and takes a look at how the people inside begin to open up as the pressure mounts.

i went through the entire beartown trilogy picturing moritz seider as benji ovich
