james' fingers knew the softness of lily's hair sliding between them. they knew how lightly to swipe a tear from harry's round face. they knew where to squeeze around sirius' middle so as not to fall off the back of the motorbike. james potter had long, dancing fingers, deft at toying with snitches and grasping large quaffles and creating the biggest snowballs.

when he yelled, 'lily, take harry and go! it's him! go! run! i'll hold him off!' james' fingers twitched for the wand across the room, too far away to matter. in another world, he held it with skill as he dueled voldemort, not for the first time. in another world the three potters made it to november 1st.

and baby harry got to grasp his father's slender fingers, gnaw on them through his teething phase. and james got to trace his thumb across lily's jaw before kissing her. and sirius slipped his fingers between james' and held their hands against his chest, muttering about how this was too close of a call. and james huddled on his couch with these three people who made up the whole of himself and he gripped them close with his fingers until they ached and burned and hardened with his desperation to keep them all safe.
