Hi everyone! I just wanted to announce I’m now running the Tiktok for Barricades Con, the online Les Mis Convention! :D Soon I plan to post wacky niche Les Mis infodumping videos— and I’d appreciate a follow at @barricadescon, if you’re on Tiktok!
Barricades is a small online convention where fans and academics give presentations, and all the proceeds go to charities related to the social issues brought up in the novel. This is the third year it’s running! You can learn more about it at the website here and follow the convention on tumblr at @barricadescon .
However, the Tiktok is super new, and we don’t have many followers there yet— so if you enjoy any of my Les Mis stuff I recommend following us there!
Soon I plan to post videos about weird niche historical details and Les Mis facts! So if you like any of my intensely niche Infodumping posts here on tumblr, feel free to follow on tiktok for more hijinks.
…Tiktok is daunting because it’s far more algorithm-based than tumblr, and starting out with zero followers means it’s much harder for anything to get noticed. XD and it’s also some of the first times I’ll be posting audio of my voice on the internet , so that’s fun!
I normally wouldn’t “ask” for followers but! But I have really enjoyed the past two years of Barricades Con— and the more attention we get the more money we’ll be able to donate to this year’s charity, Black and Pink!
Thank you all again and uh, like comment and subscribe if you’re on tiktok XD.

Tough luck for Mme. Hucheloup – nobody asked her if she wanted any of this; they just came and turned her inn into their command unit surrounded by barricades. Now, they are all building the barricade. They surely have prior experience (probably from 1830) and know what they are doing. Hugo meticulously and precisely describes the method of building the barricade. Bulky objects like drays and omnibuses, iron bars, wooden beams, barrels, and paving-stones! Remember this in case you need to build a barricade! (And I am not even joking.) Gavroche is working with Bahorel! Feuilly (my dearest) handles some rough stuff with his “fingers skilled in painting the delicate sticks of fans.” The epitome of barricade aesthetics is Enjolras, standing “on the crest of the barricade, gun in hand.”
Meanwhile, the people in the neighbourhood are terrified. They lock the doors and block the windows. Grantaire is also frightened and stressed, but his way of dealing with this stress is disgusting! He is unbearable! He is just too much! So much so that both Courfeyrac and Enjolras have to shut him up. And Enjolras is extremely harsh on him: “Grantaire, you are incapable of believing, of thinking, of willing, of living, and of dying.” Actually, this is the first time we see them interact in person after Grantaire’s failure at the Barriere du Maine, if I am not mistaken. So, the tension is sky-high. Despite this, Grantaire is “keeping his tender and troubled eyes fixed on” Enjolras. And then, “night descends” upon him.

Phantom of the Opera and the 1871 Paris Commune in 2023
Thanks to everyone who participated in PotO Paris Commune Week 2023, whether through writing new fic or supporting the work of others. There were two new PotO-Commune fics this year:
Peculiarities on the Rue de Rivoli by @m2-km:  In the midst of the Bloody Week of the Paris Commune, the Persian finds two unexpected visitors outside his flat on the Rue de Rivoli. Senjyuushi crossover.
Far from Home by @textsfromthefifthbasement: Christine and her father find themselves in Paris at the time of the 1871 Commune.
And some new(ish) meta:
Interview with historian Mitch Abidor on Gaston Leroux’s Phantom of the Opera
Some lively conversation about Erik and anarchy in the comments of an old post about Émile Henry’s possible influence on Leroux. The connections between Leroux’s experiences covering the 1894 trials and executions of three anarchists and Erik’s rantings about the Commune in the novel are worth exploring further.
There are now 16 Phantom of the Opera fics under the PotO_Paris_Commune_1871 collection on AO3. And there are even more Commune fics which you can find by searching the tag Paris Commune.
Tumblr media
As June 5 is Barricade Day for the Les Mis fandom, here are some fics that bring 1832 characters into the events of 1871:
Le Temps des Cerises by spadeK: Les Mis AU, Les Amis de l'ABC but during the 1871 Commune. This fic is in Chinese, but I was able to enjoy reading it through Google Translate.
历史的回响 (Echoes of History) by Lingling_E:  Les Mis AU, Based on Volume III, Book IV, Chapter V Enlargement of Horizon, another Chinese language fic that places Les Amis in the Paris Commune. This one includes Marius and Enjolras.
The Family Pontmercy by  red__carnations: Time goes by. Cosette and Marius start their own little family.
Hope by @textsfromthefifthbasement: An older Cosette lives through yet another revolution in Paris. One night at the beginning of the semaine sanglante, she has a mysterious visitor. Les Mis/PotO crossover.

Preliminary Gayeties: Preparatory Materials for Interested Parties
Greetings, all! As you may be aware, @barricadescon (x) is happening this weekend. Myself (x), @shitpostingfromthebarricade (x), and @grantairelibere (x) will be hosting one of the social night panels, and we are BEYOND excited! Below, I’ve got a bit more information for you:
As you may know, Preliminary Gayeties is one of the chapters of the Brick, in which Grantaire, Joly, and Bossuet get a bit trashed while they wait for Lamarque’s funeral to reach the riot stage. The three of us have a fairly longstanding personal tradition of reading this chapter aloud and playing a drinking game whenever we’re together, and it is to this custom that we would like to invite all of you. Now, in order to fully participate, you may need some supplies! All versions of these supplies are equally valid, and certainly it can be played with simple water and any snackie of your choice. However, we find it is MOST amusing when you have a specific bev or snack to stand in for each one specified. To that end, we provide a guide below so that as many people as possible may be prepared to participate fully in our game!
First of all, we need some bevs:
The primary drink is (usually red) wine. For substitutions, we suggest: any wine you personally prefer, a wine cooler, grape juice, grape flavored gatorade/sports drink, any kind of purple drink mix, some water with red/purple food coloring in it, Just Straight Up Water, whatever speaks to you!
In much smaller quantities, the activity also calls for beer (specifically stout), brandy, and absinthe.
For beer, we suggest: any beer of your choice, a nonalcoholic beer, some lemonade, Just Some Bread, ginger beer, ginger ale, any kind of cola, etc.
For brandy, we suggest: brandy, whiskey, any dark liquor, Just A Shot of Maple Syrup, tea, a shot of coke or pepsi, etc.
For absinthe, we will do The Ritual, in which you put a small amount of absinthe in a cup, put a sugar cube in a strainer above it, and slowly pour water over the cube until it has dissolved. For substitutions, we suggest: any violently green energy drink, mountain dew, sugar water with green food coloring, Just Eat Some Licorice, ouzo, a straight shot of lime juice, or anything else unhinged that your little heart desires!
For snacks, we suggest you have some bread, along with…
Oysters. For substitutions, consider: smoked salmon/lox, any shellfish or seafood of your choice, some nice oyster mushrooms, oyster crackers, gummies shaped like shells idk do they sell those, frankly Swedish Fish, etc.
Brie. For substitutions, consider: any kind of cheese or faux-cheese, any kind of Bread Spread you prefer, butter, flavored butter, jam, marmalade, etc
Ham. For substitutions, consider: bacon, turkey bacon, turkey, any kind of cold cut you prefer, thinly sliced vegetables, veggie burger, etc
