"WATERMELON ANIMALS"

First things first, what do I mean with Watermelon animals?

What I mean by watermelon is the symbolic version of Palestine. Palestine has been suffering for so long, especially within these long months that started later last year when Israel started bombing the land. Hundreds of people in Palestine are facing genocide at this very moment.

Besides the people of Palestine, the animals who have made home with their owners have been suffering through this fate. Such animals include domestic pets such as dogs, cats, and even birds. Just as the Palestinians are suffering through this tragedy, their beloved animals share the same fate.

To give a brief history of the Palestine Genocide, we need to know why they're being targeted:

Israel and Palestine have a long history together dating back to 1948, when the Gaza Strip, the land Palestinians reside in, was in an ownership conflict between the two countries. This point led to Israeli forces detaining and imprisoning thousands of Palestinians to negotiate for the land in return for the prisoners to be set free. Israel has also set a blockade in Gaza that cuts off most forms of access to necessities but not yet to the point of genocidal torture until recently.

Back in 1987, a Palestinian political party called the "Hamas" was created in response to Israel's increased use of violence on Palestine. Hamas then created this military division to handle this violence directly, called the "Izz al-Din al-Qassam," in the year 1992. This division was responsible for creating strategies to go against Israel. Hamas works on its own accord to gain two certain goals: The truce between Israel and Palestine and the return of Palestine refugees under Israel's control.

Israel has been forcibly using force to ensure that the occupation of the Gaza Strip is done as soon as possible, even with the forces of Hamas trying to fight back. Though Hamas has the goal the Palestinians want, it only represents 44% of Palestine when Hamas was voted back in 2006, but the other percentage says that "no party represents Palestine". The use of arms the Hamas were using to fight back, it has increased the chances of their connections with the UN General Assembly to allow their occupation to continue over Gaza by means necessary. Again, Hamas wanted a truce, so they tried to do so back in 2006 when the chairperson of Hamas, Ismail Haniyeh, tried to negotiate with Israel. Israel denied this truce and the next truce from Chief Khaled Meshal. The next truce was in 2015 to take down the blockade, only for Israel to reject it once again. The last truce was made in 2018, when chairperson Haniyeh wrote a Hebrew letter to Israel's Prime minister, Netanyahu, who rejected the offer.

So why is the news just covering this genocide? Israel is one of the largest supporters of the UN General Assembly. They cover it up because of the power and control they have currently, and the change of media from TV to social media is redirecting the public to believe that Palestine used violence first against Israel. Though just from the context mentioned earlier, we understand that Palestine wants to live and needed to do something, even when the whole nation did not agree to the means of Hamas, They tried and tried again for a truce or some sort of agreement to end this oppressive status quo Israel was pushing for. This issue continued to the point where other nations agreed to send in their own forms of aid to help Israel with its "war" with Palestine. Such countries as the US, Israel's largest supporter, voted "no ceasefire" when Palestine made the offer to the rest of the UN assembly.

Palestine has been suffering ever since, with their current prime minister denying their genocide on the country and even saying it was "self-defense" against the acts of Palestine. Due to this series of events and the outlets that try to put out Palestine news as "just a war" Palestine started or Israel was the "victim", and the support Israel has to literally wipe out Palestinians for good, it has turned to one of this year's largest genocide to still happen besides that of in Congo, Sudan, etc.

"Why don't they just leave and let Israel take the land to save yourself from their violence?"

They can't.

The Gaza Strip blockade is still intact, therefore, all Palestinians can do is try to run from areas meant to be bombed by Israel. Israel has stated to Palestinians that they will bomb the area but not in areas such as in Rafah in Northern Gaza. That was a blatant lie as in the recent timeline of 2024, Israel has started to bomb Rafah as well. Palestinians need all the help they can get just to live, whether it be food, water, electricity, or clothing. shelter, etc. Even as we speak, they are being bombed and targeted by Israeli forces in the name of "self-defense" according to Israel.

So what has this anything to do with the animals of Gaza?

Just a Palestinians can't leave the strip, the animals are victims to the rapid violence and bombing of Israel. Animals may not hold the same value as we do when it comes to people on the verge of death in Gaza, but these animals held value to those in Gaza the same way we hold value to our pets. Animals in Gaza have been abandoned forcibly by their loved ones by death or separated from them through the chaos of this genocide

Sulala Animal Rescue is run by a man named Saeed Al-Err.

Saeed and his team have over 400 animals in their care as the bombing and genocide continue in Palestine. They've worked hard to ensure the animals and people they can afford to spare food for are fed. They have dogs, cats, donkeys, horses, etc. He and his team have been working endlessly up to this day to care for the animals left to suffer.

Recently, the Sulala Animal Rescue has been in dire need of funds. Not just for food, but relief goods. These animals are just as affected as Palestine victims, who need food, running water, and medical care to live and survive.

The Sulala Animal Rescue has an open link tree that allows us to donate what we can to help him, his team, and the animals continue to work and survive through these rough times. Keep learning and keep advocating

It may seem tedious and it will take an awful long time, but time is a valuable asset to consider when the world continues to heat. If you cannot see the problem with climate change on the welfare of animals in general, NASA scientists, Peter Kalmus, Allan Chornack, and co. were reported to be advocating the drastic need for higher-ups to make a change for climate change with their decisions to reduce its creation. They do it not just to educate people on our fates, but what it could mean when animals and the planet's welfare is at stake

Uh Oh to the Polar Bears

Polar Bears or Ursus maritimus, are a breed of bears that reside in the colder regions of this earth. They are identifiable with their similar features of a bear as well as their white/yellow fur coats covering their bodies. Interestingly enough, these bears have black skin to increase their intake of heat to survive the cold weather.

Though these Apex predators terror the icebergs of the cold continent eating seals, kelp, and other animals, they aren't the greatest dangers when it comes to the predicament our world has come to

Due to the rising climate changes in the world as of 2024, the icebergs and glaciers of the cold region are declining rapidly and melting away. These ice islands hold great importance for most wildlife in the Arctic. Mostly due to being their environment, a place for hunting, and the adaptions they've set to be there in the first place.

Climate change increases each year, to the point that it's becoming the greatest factor in the extinction of different animals, especially to Polar Bears.

In this recent indicator researched by the  Food and Agriculture Organization Corporate Statistical Database (FAOSTAT), in the span from 1961 to the recent years of the 2000s, the rising temperatures are at an all-time high. Additionally, ice formation appears at -1.8°C (28.8°F), though with the recent discovery of the researchers of UCL and Copernicus; ECMWF, there is more proof within 2024 holding the now hottest climate weather presently.

So what does that mean for Polar Bears?

Polar bears use the ice regions for a multitude of reasons,

Their homes, the environment they have adapted to

Their prey requires these temperatures and ice regions to survive

In other words, the ice-cold temperature and blocks make up their entire world. Sure, Polar bears could be moved to places such as the Zoo for better accommodation when their homes are at the brink of destruction, but we already know why Zoos are just as disadvantageous as the melting Ice glaciers/ Icebergs.

The most concerning factor zoos are capable of producing is Zoochosis and the overall captivity situation.

An example of Zoochosis is the case of Gus the Polar bear from the Central Park Zoo of NYC,

Gus was a polar bear exhibited at the Central Park Zoo of New York in the 1990s and died in 2013. He was also the first polar bear to be given Prozac after the public noticed signs of "12 hours of pacing" in 2011. Even noted by the zoo keepers who noted his pacing was also the need to swim in figure eights in his habitat, which then resulted in his need for Prozac. Gus was observed to get worse, when his partner, Ida, died in 2011 when he was seen to lose appetite and had difficulty with the digestion process. Researchers concluded that Gus had depression and "Neurotic tendencies" and he was soon placed in an enrichment program to "cheer him up".

Gus is just one of the examples of animals experiencing Zoochosis and living in a place of captivity. His case should be seen as one of the reasons why Zoos aren't always the greatest options for those who cannot be in the wild.

That being said, Polar Bears are endangered as long as the recent temperatures keep rising to destroy their habitats. Let us also note in an article by Brault (2022), that the pandemic has also placed a great dent in Zoo's finances, which requires the need for visitors to keep running. Given that Polar Bears require more than other animals given their nature and habitat, reliance on these companies owning zoos should not be expected to have the best facilities to care for Polar Bears within the given time.

So, What can we do?

With the rise of climate change already taking effect on the habitats of Polar Bears, we are more responsible than ever if the animals of these cold regions are wiped off the face of the Earth.
