This story was recced to me by a Nonny over on Tumblr, and their rec was so good I'll just re-use it here: "On ao3, user so_shyy has just written and published a masterpiece! Cant believe I’m forgetting the name, but it’s 16 chapters, modern au with cultivation. Lan zhan has left the lan sect to dedicate himself to uncovering the ancient lan musical cultivation techniques, which have been lost to time. In his work, he meets the equivalent of a cultivation “street sweeper”, who happens to live in his building and have a young son, but who also happens to have a strangely high cultivation level for a poorly paid municipal cultivator. Beyond that little mystery, there’s an excellent underlying problem that leads to a big revelation. "More perks: Renowned sect leader and the darling of the cultivation world lan xichen overuses emojis! It’s a kidfic! And wow, it is so well written. What more could you want? something I've been musing over lately is Meng Yao and Lan Xichen having completely opposing needs re: marriage (particularly in a modern AU) and how their relationship with Nie Mingjue helps them work through it.

like, Lan Xichen growing up very very aware of the fact that his parents should not have been married, didn't make each other happy, refused to divorce Because of the Kids(/traditional values!!) which are bad reasons. so he knows from a very young age that he's not going to marry. he's going to fall in love with his whole heart, he's going to be loyal and generous, and if at any point the relationship starts to turn unhealthy, if he stops making his partner(s) happy, he is going to let them go.

annnnd then Meng Yao growing up has the exact opposite experience. painfully aware of how badly things can go when you don't have concrete reassurances to fall back on, knowing that someone can say all the right things, make all the promises in the world, and that doesn't mean jack shit if they're not willing to back them up with something real. it's fine in the early stages, but after a while he starts to second-guess himself, wondering if "I would let you go" might not have shades of "I don't care enough to hold on to you."

but then! up pops Nie Mingjue! who has some parental issues of his own, don't get him wrong, but he had a front-row seat to both of his dad's happy marriages, and he's perfectly content with the idea that 1) you can love someone without being obsessive over them, in life or in death, 2) it's okay to move on if that's what life has in store for you, 3) marriage is nice! domesticity and commitment are nice things to have when it's with someone you love and trust.

so NieYao get married, and Lan Xichen remains their boyfriend/partner, and it takes some getting used to but it soothes them all a bit. from LXC's point of view, he trusts that NMJ is a little more level-headed about relationships, more willing to see the bad and the good instead of getting obsessive, and he's happy that MY feels more stable, that he'll have something even if they don't work out. from MY's point of view, he's got that proof that NMJ is willing to commit to him (and lbr their relationship has been shaky at times too, so that's comforting for its own sake). and also he knows that NieLan have a much longer history so that's some reassuring data that LXC isn't going to disappear on them out of the blue. NMJ likes making both of them just a little less stressed out... and now he has a good excuse to foist some of his domestic paperwork on Meng Yao, which is NOT him being lazy. (ok it's like 10% his own laziness, 60% Meng Yao likes doing paperwork, 30% he wears his Work Glasses and breaks out the color-coding highlighters/post-it notes and it's really cute.)

and Nie Huaisang gets to fuss over a wedding. win-win-win-win.

I was tagged by @little-meowyao to find paragraphs in my WIPs with the words song, hand, and glass.

(You catch me at a time where I only have one very rough wip I am currently working on, but all three words were in it! )

It's a very self indulgent xiyao sci-fi AU:

To Meng Yao, when he was little, the best part of the stories and songs had been that the Lan did not need ships to fly - they streaked across the sky like burning white comets, bringers of good tidings. He often sat outside late at night while mother worked, and stared up to the small window of sky he could see between buildings, hoping to see a Lan comet high above.

Glass:

There are many stories about the Lans in alliance territory. Glass eyes, gold heart, was the saying - people could trust Lans implicitly, aided by both superstition and a long history of valorous deeds. Meng Yao knows that android eyes are not made of glass but carbon fiber, and that gold alloy components are placed nowhere near the core. Still, some of the mystique rubs off on him on occasion, when Lan Xichen’s moonlight gaze pierces him.

Hand:

Meng Yao pauses, then clenches the fingers of his bionic hand thoughtfully. He unspools a second cable from its wrist, humming, and plugs into the console. “I lost my arm in an accident when I was fourteen. Nie Mingjue gave me the same model arm that Nie mechanics got. He said I was too scrawny for a weaponized upgrade.”

Summary: Lan Wangji runs a sanctuary for rescued bunnies. His life is quiet and routine. Until Mo Xuanyu needs a place to stay out of trouble. He doesn’t expect to end up rescuing him, too.

Kay's comments: The focus of this story lies in the relationship between Mo Xuanyu and Lan Wangji and it's really beautiful to read about, to see grouchy teen Mo Xuanyu slowly coming out of his shell and coming to trust Lan Wangji. Wangxian and single father Wei Wuxian is a sweet bonus though and I loved to see how it all came together, how they all found each other! So sweet!

Excerpt: On a Sunday morning, while Lan Wangji is doing medication rounds and Mo Xuanyu is, ostensibly, putting fresh bedding in the enclosures, Lan Wangji overhears him talking to one of the rabbits from the other room. He shouldn’t eavesdrop, but he can’t help hearing. “You’re a nasty little fucker, aren’t you? Is that why no one wants you except crazy Mr. Lan? Because you bite. I’ll bet you bit somebody’s kid and they sent you away. You’d bite me, if you could. I don’t blame you. Nobody likes me, either.” Lan Wangji can guess which rabbit he’s talking to. Peony does, in fact, bite, and he has the scar on his finger to prove it. He isn't sure if he should be glad Mo Xuanyu is interacting with the rabbits, or sad about what he’s saying to them, and he leaves hurriedly, before he can hear anything else more private. But later, casually, he asks, “Would you like me to show you how to hold the rabbits?”

Ooof that was an exhausting one... I've wanted to draw a Pieta for years and last week I finally sketched one for Xiyao because I am a dramatic bitch who loves suffering. Both for the characters and for myself, considering I was looking at LXC's sad sad face for hours on end trying to figure out what I got wrong. Kinda felt like I was holding him at gunpoint. Honestly, maybe Pieta-ing for a while would have helped with his grief! Please appreciate the tear tracks on his face, I really like those :'D The closer you get the sadder his expression becomes.

3zun data analysis

I was wondering how much the different 2-out-of-3zun ship fics were actually focused specifically on them, rather than having them feature as side pairings, so I did a little mini-experiment. Beginning by searching for otp:true in each tag

(This doesn't give you the real number of fics were the pairing is the main focus, for the record. The other tagged ships might've been a side pairing, and the one we're filtering for the main one, and otp:true also filters out platonic relationships. So, for example, a nielan fic that has the nie brothers tagged as a platonic bond will also be filtered out. But since it does that for all ships you can still get a good idea how likely each one of them is to be the center in their fics)

My hypothesis was that Nielan would be the least likely, as they're frequently tagged as a side pairing in wangxian focused fics, with xiyao and nieyao having comparable results.

Nielan, as I type this, have 2154 works, of which only 627 have only nielan tagged. That is 29% of all nielan fics.

Next up is xiyao, who have 4534 works, of which 2195 only have xiyao tagged, a significanly higher 48%

And lastly nieyao, who have the least works in total with 1749, but have 683 works only tagged nieyao, more than nielan despite having less fics overall. Ending up at 39% of all nieyao fics

So I was right about nielan being lower, but turned out to be wrong in my hypothesis that nieyao and xiyao would end up with comparable results!

One possible factor is that nieyao, being a smaller ship, is more affected by those big collection-type fics that have a dozen pairings tagged for every chapter, as well as 3zun fics that have the individual pairings tagged. (Which we'll get to later!!)

Also, Huaisang - typical of him - butts into nieyao more. 5% of nieyao fics have the Nie brothers tagged platonically, and almost exactly the same number are tagged sangyao. Compare that to lan xichen's much more reserved little brother who really doesn't want to be a part of this, as only 3% of xiyao fics are tagged with the twin jades, and zhanyao... isn't much of a thing.

I'd anticipated both of these, but I'd also expected that xiyao, being a bigger ship, would be a less controversial background pairing for wangxian, who - let's be real - are the main players within the mdzs fic space so they massively impact the numbers. I know xiyao are certainly not without controversy (god no) and the go-to side pairings are xicheng and xuanli instead but like... compared to nieyao, surely they're the normie pick? And, well, 25% of xiyao fics are tagged wangxian compared to only 20% of nieyao fics so that is somewhat true, but not as much as I'd thought. (For comparison, 43% of nielan fics are tagged wangxian)

Now let's look at 3zun overall. Of the 1127 3zun fics, 277 are exclusively tagged 3zun. That's only 25%

But that doesn't feel right. After all, a lot of 3zun fics also tag the individual pairings. And excluding them like we did with the 2-out-of-3zun ships feels wrong. You'd categorize a fic tagged with both nieyao and 3zun as a 3zun fic, wouldn't you?

So I manually excluded each non 2-out-of-3zun pair. This took a bit, but you end up with 538 3zun fics which are either not tagged with any side pairing, or only tagged with a ship already contained in 3zun. That is 48% of all 3zun fics, similar to xiyao.

So there you have it! Xiyao is the most independent of the subfandoms, having almost half of its works centered solely around xiyao (and even more primarily focused on xiyao. As I said, otp:true also filters out works that still focus on xiyao but have other background relationships) with the overall 3zun fandom having a similar focus, followed by nieyao, and then nielan.
