“Oh my god, oh my god, please don’t drown yourself in Shufu’s vintage tub—“  The panicked little plea dies on Lan Xichen’s lips as something extraordinary, something magical and horrifying happens in front of his stunned eyes.  As soon as the water covers him completely, the young man twists like a snake and presses his legs together. Skin trembles and crackles - the transformation would be grotesque, if it weren’t so beautiful. A thick golden tail unfurls like a glittering stole. It’s so long it has to coil twice to fit in the tub, scales glittering like a sunken treasure. Retired swimmer Lan Xichen rescues someone, but that someone isn't quite human. He makes himself very much at home in his bathtub, however. (A mer/human romcom with a very mild sprinkle of angst)

this fic is part of a whole series and yes, okay, the core premise is essentially "how Lan Xichen discovers he's a monsterfucker", but oh my god - it's funny, it's cute, it's angsty at times but it's genuinely such a fun read! all the silliness of romcom tropes whilst also interestingly transplanting the social dynamics of Meng Shi's situation using fantasy aspects. take a look at this series if you like sweet and sexy but incredibly genuinely loving xiyao, Huaisang gremlin content, Wei Wuxian gremlin content, JGS getting exactly what he deserves, and Mingjue feeling like the only goddman sane man in the world.

hey!! absolutely, i would be stoked to recommend some of my favourite xiyao fics for you:

last of our kind, by shiome - a post-canon AU in which lxc chooses to take jgy to dongying after the events of guanyin temple—but jgy, struggling to recover from the injuries he sustained in the temple, has lost all of his memories of himself past the age of about 17. there’s plenty of cool dongying world-building in this “case fic,” and it’s one of my favourites. (i usually dislike fic where jgy after the sunshot campaign is referred to as meng yao, but this one is a clear exception to that rule!)

hurt/comfort variations on a poison theme, by welcome_equivocator - set during jgy’s time as chief cultivator. jgy survives an assassination attempt and says some things while delirious that lxc can’t forget he’s heard. the main story in this series is how will the morning find us? but the sequels (including one by roquen) are excellent.

it’s worth it every time, by roquen - this series includes what is legit my favourite xiyao fic of all time, the weakness of falling in love. it a canon-divergent AU based on the premise of what would happen if jgy didn’t marry qin su, and hews extremely close to canon. lots of 3zun dynamics at play here as well as an exceptionally well-developed fantastic friendship between jgy and nhs. this series also includes the only fic that has ever made me feel any real sympathy for nmj, which is a big deal for me since i struggle to enjoy nmj as a character 95% of the time. and it’s killing me but maybe that’s fine is the remaining 5%.

remains, by welcome_equivocator - just a sad post-canon rumination on what happens if lxc runs back into the collapsing guanyin temple to be with jgy as he dies. because sometimes we need to lean into the tragic catharsis of this ship.

a painting missing strokes, a song missing notes, by occasional_boy_reporter - another post-canon AU wherein jgy, lxc, and su minshan (!!!) are trying to escape to dongying, tho lxc is initially brought along as an unwilling pseudo-hostage. starts out a bit slow, since the fic creates an alternate circumstance for jgy and sms to both survive nmj’s attack in the temple, but it really does pick up steam. it’s also told from lxc’s perspective for the most part (and includes some one sided unrequited suyao, but xiyao is absolutely endgame). alas it isn’t finished yet, but i hope that the author intends to return to it.

canon compliant:

The Yunmeng Accords (series) by cafecliche. Featuring a gradual Yunmeng bros reconciliation and lots of contributions from the juniors.

Vagabond by xantissa. Sad and tricky case fic that helps Lan Wangji and Wei Wuxian come together.

on the unfortunate termination of your proposal by Tepre. Lovely and sweet, grown-up Lan Sizhui and Jin Ling come to terms with their feelings.

pluck the stars by exoscopy. TGCF fusion (you don't need to have read it) that is post-canon canon, as far as I'm concerned.

canon AU: Everyone Lives (With Knives) series by tucuxi. Pretty much what it says on the tin. One of the rare survival AUs that doesn't make everything simple and easy.

Ficbinding: Last of Our Kind, by Shiome

This is a postcanon xiyao fic in which Lan Xichen escapes to Dongying with a grievously injured and amnesiac Jin Guangyao. Someone, or something, is following them.

At just over 100k this is the longest fic I've bound so far! It's also my first time doing lettering on the spine. It's technically a simpler design than my previous ficbinding projects but I did still have to be a little extra in the end; I couldn't find any paper I liked for the black accent stripe so I took some plain black paper and added the gold splatters myself.

xiyao Pacific Rim au?

Hell yes. I have been thinking about this for about 3 years, but never wrote any of it. I just opened a doc and jotted down this snippet for you! Hopefully someday I can turn this into a whole fic.

I give you 500 words of stranded/traumatized Jaeger pilot Lan Xichen in post-apocalyptic Yunping:

“Meng Yao… what are you doing?"

“The Kaiju won’t wait for us to run,” Meng Yao replies without taking his eyes off his work, “according to my scanner it is only 160 minutes out, unless it changes course.” The scanner in question looks like it was salvaged from parts, but it is beeping in a very believable, alarming manner.  “We cannot evacuate the town in time, and we are unlikely to save ourselves even if we start running very, very fast. We must fight back.” He dives back elbows-deep in the cockpit with feverish focus, ripping and soldering cords like he knows what each of them does. Lan Xichen is once again overtaken by awe and instinctual faith in this small, brilliant human being.

When Lan Xichen had washed ashore near the refugee encampment, banged up and near-catatonic from the loss of his brother, he had never imagined someone with Jaeger training would be hiding in these backwater ruins. His savior was one Meng Yao of Yunping, a wiry young man in ripped overalls, with too many tools hanging off his belt and too-hard eyes in a gentle round face. As it turned out, his clever mind could rival Lan Xichen’s own AI navigator - he’d taken only a few days to assess the damage to his Jaeger and write up a repair plan.

Twin Jade was stretched out on the beach, looking like a sleeping giant half-covered in brine. She was not in a bad state overall, save for the smashed cockpit - but she was down one co-pilot, so Lan Xichen had given up on resurrecting her altogether. Meng Yao had not.

While Lan Xichen consumed himself with worries over Wangji’s fate and his lack of communications, his savior worked day and night to get both pilot and Jaeger back to some semblance of functionality. (Lan Xichen paused to chuckle over the mental comparison of hot soup for himself and scrapyard parts for Twin Jade, both sourced by Meng Yao with unfailing efficiency).

“The repairs are only temporary," Meng Yao's voice brings him back to the present emergency. "But I can essentially jumpstart her for long enough to keep it running in emergency mode for a couple of hours. I’ll need you to do most of the fighting while I keep an eye on the systems.” 

“You want to pilot with me?” Lan Xichen’s eyes widen.

“Well, you can’t pilot by yourself, can you?” Meng Yao chuckled nervously, without looking back from the console. “And even if you could, your leg is broken.” 

“Drifting can be very dangerous if you have never…”

“I have trained before,” Meng Yao interrupts him. “I can pilot, Lan Xichen. I can,” he swears, pushing his bangs out of his eyes frantically. “I know I am asking a lot, but–”

“I trust you,” Lan Xichen says unthinkingly, reaching out to wipe a smear of grease from his cheek. “I only… wish to apologize for what you may see in the drift.”

Meng Yao only laughs, shaking his head. His eyes are avoidant. “Likewise.”

Neither of them paused to doubt whether they'd be compatible. That much was a given.

Lan Xichen enters the repaired cockpit, leaning all of his weight on Meng Yao. He plugs in with slightly-shaking hands.

It is terrifying to let Meng Yao see all of what you are. But he is scared, too. He is, you realize, more afraid than you are. As if his secrets could be any worse than the monstrosity inside yourself. You smile at him with all the warmth you can muster, smiling past the fears in your head. You suddenly want to see him more than anything.

DRAWTOBER #23 - Last of Our Kind by Shiome

On a ship to Dongying, a man awakens grievously injured, missing not only a hand but also a good chunk of his memories.

Travelling across a foreign land and dealing with local ghosts, Meng Yao(?) tries to remember and Lan Xichen tries to forget. But on the way to retracing and rekindling old feelings, they realize they are being followed.

this fic was a late entry - I’d already organised most of my ficrec list before I got to reading it, and it was good enough that I rearranged the entire damn list to get it in. it is just absolutely excellent. I am very picky about what “JGY escapes the temple” fics I read, just because I think it’s tough to do Xichen’s emotional struggle in the aftermath justice, but this one really nails it. JGY’s memory loss essentially means that teenage Meng Yao wakes up in an older body, missing a hand, in a place he doesn’t know, with a tall handsome man who clearly loves him but is furious with him for reasons he won’t explain and who doesn’t believe him when he says he doesn’t know what’s going on... and reading as he has to frantically struggle to put everything together from the tiny scraps of information  he has, whilst not pissing off the very powerful man, and also not getting murdered by assassins or whatever weird curse has taken over his arm stump, is just a joy. it’s part casefic, part canon divergence AU, and all fantastic. highly recommend.

What are your few excellent exceptions for Lan-furen endings for JGY?

i say “few” but like… it’s one lol it’s just one fic, and it’s fallow fields by shiome. jgy gets to feel all of his extremely crunchy feelings about becoming lan-furen essentially to avoid being executed, but i don’t want to give away too much else about it because the plot twists and reveals are so well done.

ok can anyone please tell me what signs to look for or which authors to avoid when reading xiyao or jgy fics? like there's one I'm reading rn which has xiyao as the main and only pairing but it also has surprise niel*an a couple chapters in. and I'm pretty sure the author hates jgy now as it has nmj being a d*ck (I mean when is he not lol) but gosh is it excruciating trying to get through it. I hate leaving things unfinished when I've become invested or else I would've stopped 😒😠 my boy jgy 🥺

the best i can do is tell you how i go about looking for fics to read

1. i read the same writers. once i find good characterization i read everything that person has to offer, i'll list a few of the people i trust below

2. i take recs from other people who've already trudged through the ao3 trenches. this is my favorite because there is less worry about running into a bad take

3. i look for jgy pov. if it's jgy's pov there is a higher chance that it'll be okay, this isn't always true but usually if someone is willing to write from the character's pov they don't hate him

4. i ctrl+f jgy's name and read around it to see if there are signs of hate writing or awful takes, if i don't like what i see i close out and didn't waste my time

5. look at their fic pairings (like the non xiyao) if its available, you can kinda tell someone by their pairings. if you see a lot of n*e ships or you get extremely Pure™ vibes from their page, those can be warnings that the jgy might not be so good and you might not end up with xiyao (this isn't to say 3z*n shippers can't write xiyao, just that if someone is REALLY INTO IT they might add it to their fic, I'm not saying its a bad thing, just a Thing)

as for that specific fic, I've actually seen a few people complain about fics with surprise n*el*n or surprise n*ey*o when it was supposed to be xiyao and to that, there isn't a lot to be done. if it's unfinished then #4 wont work, so you just gotta suffer. i'd just kindly ask the author to tag it and suggest that if they think a fic will have a pairing that tagging it isn't spoilers, it just helps you find the right audience

for the most part everyone above I've read multiple of their xiyao fics and all have good characterization of jgy, some write 3z*n but I've never been randomly surprised by a new pairing by any of them and I've enjoyed each and every one of their fics!

i'd also suggest looking through these people's bookmarks to see if you can find more authors!
