The Netflix documentary "Stamped From The Beginning" starts with a provocative question writer and professor Ibram X. Kendi asks of other Black academics.

IBRAM X KENDI: Can you please tell me what is wrong with Black people?

RASCOE: Kendi, who founded the Center for Antiracist Research at Boston University, answers by invoking how systemic racism can convince Black people and everyone else that Black people deserve to be marginalized. NPR TV critic and media analyst Eric Deggans has watched "Stamped From The Beginning" and has also been following recent allegations of mismanagement against Kendi at the BU center. Hi, Eric.

ERIC DEGGANS, BYLINE: Hi.

RASCOE: So first, tell us more about this documentary. It's out on Netflix later this month.

DEGGANS: Yeah, it's this percolating primer on the themes in Kendi's award-winning 2016 book of the same name. Now, there's compelling animation, historical photos, interviews with lots of academics - although it might be tough for some people to watch. It's centered on this idea that much of the systemic racism that's directed against Black people was created as an attempt to justify enslavement and exploitation of Black people, not the other way around. And in the film, you know, Kendi speaks of this ruler known as Prince Henry of Portugal who he says turned to enslaving Black people from Africa in the mid-1400s instead of Europeans because it was harder for them to run away. Here's a clip. Let's listen.

KENDI: Prince Henry didn't want to admit he was violently enslaving African people to make money, so he dispatched a royal chronicler by the name of Gomes Zurara.

(SOUNDBITE OF MUSIC)

KENDI: Gomes Zurara justified his slave trading by stating that Prince Henry was doing it to save souls and that these people in Africa were inferior.

DEGGANS: So that, Kendi says, is the creation of Blackness in which Europeans treat Africans from many different tribes and countries as one inferior race to justify exploiting them.

RASCOE: So these are some very complex concepts about race and history. How does this fit with his other work, you know, like his bestselling book "How To Be An Antiracist" or his ESPN series on sports and race?

DEGGANS: Well, you know, I've interviewed Kendi for NPR's Life Kit podcast. And at the core of a lot of his work is this idea that racism is a behavior, not just a state of being - that it comes down to choices you make every day. And in Netflix's "Stamped From The Beginning," that means examining these ideas like the myth of Black hypersexuality, which has been invoked throughout history to justify raping Black women or lynching Black men. And after the death of George Floyd in 2020, you know, Kendi gained new prominence speaking on these themes - the themes in "How To Be An Antiracist." And those ideas are found in so many contemporary issues that it makes sense that Kendi could leverage them into an ESPN project on racism in sports or this Netflix film.

RASCOE: And what about that criticism Kendi ran into following his decision earlier this year to lay off about half the staff at the Center for Antiracist Research at Boston University? Where do those allegations of mismanagement stand?

DEGGANS: Well, the university just released an internal audit finding there were no issues with how the center's finances were handled, which kind of backed up Kendi's contention that the layoffs were not a result of bad fiscal management. And it also pushes back against some critics who tried to delegitimize his concepts by suggesting he's some kind of fraud. Now, hopefully, this will allow people to focus more on his ideas, which he sums up at the end of "Stamped From The Beginning" by answering that original question. The only thing wrong with Black people, he says, is that we think something is wrong with Black people.

Violent Phenomena: 21 essays on Translation is an anthology of writing by 24 contributors featuring a breadth of personal experience with culture, language, translation, publishing, and grappling with colonial and imperial legacies. As the introduction puts it ‘Above all this book is a challenge to inherited assumptions about translators and translations being neutral, making the case that every aspect of translation is political.’

Several of the contributors and their work I was familiar with prior. While with others this book is the first I’ve encountered. Yet these essays all echo very long recurring discussions. Reflecting my personal preferences the highlight is Monchoachi’s Between Crié and Ècrit from 2007 in English translation from the French also with afterword by Eric Fishman. Then “Blackness” in French: On Translation, Haiti, and the Matter of Race by Kaiama L. Glover (previously Race and the Aesthetic in French and Francophone Cultures) and Why Don’t You Translate Pakistanian? by Sawad Hussain are likewise particularly engaging. Among the many other essays all worth going over.

If one has an interest in translation and decolonisation pick up this book.

SEC Charges Christopher R. Bentley - Fraud

SEC Sues Fund Manager Christopher R. Bentley and Investment Adviser, Bellatorum Resources, LLC for Multi-Million Dollar Fraud Securities and Exchange Commission v. Christopher R. Bentley and Bellatorum Resources, LLC, No. 4:22-cv-02772 (S.D. Tex. filed August 16, 2022) The Securities and Exchange Commission charged Christopher R. Bentley of Tomball, Texas, and his company, Bellatorum Resources, LLC ("Bellatorum"), for engaging in myriad fraudulent acts that resulted in an almost complete loss of over $30 million invested in three private funds: Bellatorum Land & Minerals, LP; Bellatorum Phalanx Investments, LP; and Sentinel Energy Investments, LP. According to the SEC's complaint, Bentley raised $31.5 million from investors to purchase and sell mineral rights through the funds, but Bentley used his control over Bellatorum, the fund's investment adviser, to secretly siphon money from the funds while concealing their poor results.  The complaint alleges that between approximately February 2019 and April 2021, Bentley perpetrated his scheme by repeatedly manipulating the funds' transactions, including: (1) purchasing inflated mineral rights from an affiliated entity that he secretly controlled; (2) purchasing mineral rights from third parties at inflated prices and then misappropriating the extra proceeds for himself and Bellatorum; (3) manipulating sales transactions to generate fake profits and trigger distributions to Bellatorum; and (4) altering documents to deceive two of the funds' auditors.  Bentley allegedly kept his scheme afloat by secretly pledging most of the funds' mineral rights as collateral for an improper loan.  When Bentley allegedly failed to repay the loan, the lender took most of the funds' investments, which triggered massive losses for the funds and their investors. The SEC's complaint, filed in U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Texas, charges Bentley and Bellatorum with violating the antifraud provisions of Section 17(a) of the Securities Act of 1933, Section 10(b) of the Securities Exchange Act of 1934 and Rule 10b-5, and Sections 206(1) and 206(2) of the Investment Advisers Act of 1940. To resolve the SEC's charges, Bentley and Bellatorum agreed to the entry of a judgment that permanently enjoins them from future violations of these provisions of the federal securities laws, bars Bentley from serving as an officer or director of a public company, and orders them to pay disgorgement, prejudgment interest, and civil penalties in amounts that will be determined by the court upon future motion of the SEC.  The partial settlements with Bentley and Bellatorum are subject to court approval. In a parallel action, the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Southern District of Texas filed related criminal charges against Bentley. The SEC's continuing investigation is being conducted by Christopher W. Ahart and Ayesha Ahmed and supervised by Jim Etri and Eric Werner of the SEC's Fort Worth Regional Office.  The SEC's litigation will be led by Jennifer Reece and supervised by B. David Fraser.  The SEC appreciates the assistance of the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Southern District of Texas and the Federal Bureau of Investigation.
