I’m playing my jury (basically my trumpet lesson final) tonight and I was joking yesterday that it would be really funny if my accompanist and I showed up wearing the same outfit since we’re both gay men with accordingly similar taste in Nice Clothes, and then I got into the meeting of the committee that we’re both on and he’s literally wearing a shirt that looks Exactly like one that I own

Feminism is not about equality, and certainly not about silently slipping into a world of work created by and for men. Feminism, at its best, is a movement that works to liberate all people who have been economically, socially and culturally marginalised by an ideological system that has been designed for them to fail. That means disabled people, black people, trans people, women and non-binary people, LGB people and working-class people. The idea of campaigning for equality must be complicated if we are to untangle the situation we’re in. Feminism will have won when we have ended poverty. It will have won when women are no longer expected to work two jobs (the care and emotional labour for their families as well as their day jobs) by default.

let's talk about tone policing, because it's really hard to recognize as it's happening.
to understand tone policing first we have to understand a specific kind of misstep in conversation, the ad hominem attack. this is when instead of discrediting the point someone makes, you discredit the person making the point. (ie think the "man hating lesbian" rebuttal of feminism: even if it's true, how does that disprove what we're saying?). tone policing is actually a specific kind of ad hominem attack where instead of criticising the message, you criticise the way the messenger delivered it. this derails the conversation from being a response to being criticism, and leads to the actual point not being addressed.
so, how do we avoid tone policing others? ultimately, this happens because what was said makes the recipient feel uncomfortable, so it's important to remember that whether or not you are uncomfortable is not the point of the discussion. there is still a message being delivered. if someone said "hey dumbass, a bomb's about to go off!" is it important, right then, that they insulted you? you can address how it made you feel later, first you acknowledge and respond to the message. this is especially important because it's entirely possible that the discomfort is actually because you dont like the message, even if youre not aware of it.
how do we prevent others tone policing? the most important thing is to not validate the idea that the way the message was delivered is the point of the conversation. if someone says to calm down, remember you should not have to. even if you are being a bitch about it (and like i said, there's a good chance you're not) that doesn't discredit what you're saying. if you see someone tone policing another person, this point still stands. let them know that it doesn't actually matter if they were being awful while saying it, what they said matters far more. now this doesn't necessarily mean ignoring how rude the messenger may have been, but even if you acknowledge that (which may actually help get the recipient to let their guard down) the priority is always the message.
i hope this helps!
