October 2023 Reading Wrap-Up
In the month of October I only read six books, which is not many for me, but I had a busy month with classes and a short trip. I read two audiobooks and four physical books. I enjoyed everything I read this month, and got to some new releases that I've been looking forward to.
1.A Conjuring of Light (Shades of Magic 3) by VE Schwab, 3.5/5 stars. I read this mostly on audio and completed my reread of the series. While I enjoyed the series more when I first read it back in 2018, it was still fun to revisit the series and remember all that happened. The floating market remains one of my favorite scenes/moments in a fantasy book, and I'm glad I took the time to reread this. Portal fantasy
2.Tiamat's Wrath (The Expanse 8) by James SA Corey, 4/5 stars. I'm finally almost done with the expanse series, and this book has been one of my favorites of the series. It had me turning the page wanting to know what happens next, and I've been enjoying the last plotline of this series. I'm really looking forward to the final book. Science-fiction.
3.The Chalice of the Gods (Percy Jackson and the Olympians 6) by Rick Riordian, 4/5 stars. This book was 100% just hype for the tv show, but was very fun and cute to read. It was nice seeing Percy, Annabeth, and Grover in a lower-stakes setting. This felt more like a novella instead of a novel, but was a fun nostalgia read. Middle grade fantasy

4.A Study in Drowning by Ava Reid, 4/5 stars. This is Ava Reid's first young adult book, and I was looking forward to it as it promises a dark academia fairy tale. I really enjoyed several aspects of this novel: the setting, the ambiance, the fairy lore. This definitely felt like an Ava Reid book, and touches on many similar themes as her other novels. Reid is an author that I plan to keep reading. YA fantasy.
5.The Fragile Threads of Power (Threads of Power 1) by VE Schwab, 4.5/5 stars. I’m always worried that continuation series are just going to repeat the original series, but this gave a fresh new plot while still retaining what makes the Shades of Magic special. We spend a lot of time with the characters from SoM, but we are introduced to a few new characters who are great to follow and get to know. I flew through the second half of this book, and this book felt like it was setting up a lot for the next books (even though it is almost 700 pages). Adult high fantasy.
5.The Alloy of Law (Mistborn 4) by Brandon Sanderson, 4/5 stars. I wasn't sure if I wanted to try reading the second-era Mistborn series, but I decided to give this a go on audio, and I'm very glad I decided to give it a try. This was super fun and entertaining, and different from a lot of the other stuff I read. It's a sort of fantasy crime thriller. I would recommend the audiobook. Fantasy.

That's it for October! I was hoping to get through two more books this month, but I'll have to finish them up in November. See below for my November tbr.
November tbr:
The Hollow Places by T Kingfisher (holdover from Oct)
Shadows of Self by Brandon Sanderson (holdover from Oct)
The Bands of Mourning by Brandon Sanderson (audiobook)
The Scorpio Races by Maggie Stiefvater (reread on audio)
Starling House by Alix E Harrow
Steelstriker by Marie Lu
Leviathan Falls by James SA Corey (Expanse 10)
Murtang (Inheritance Cycle book 5) by Christopher Paolini
(possibly Iron Flame by Rebecca Yarros, if I feel like continuing with the series)

i keep seeing people in their late teens/early twenties having a "[X] content intended for younger audiences does not feel satisfying to me anymore but i don't know where to start to branch out into adult fiction" moment and i thought i would give some recommendations for adult fiction for my fellow creepy crawly queer people. all or at least a LOT of it will be on the darker and more fucked up side bc i primarily engage with horror and thriller media personally but feel free to add on with more or recommendations from other genres :)
edit: i am continuing to add to this list so there might be new recs (highlighted in pink) in here every once in a while! also want to add that there's a variety of POC, queer, and disabled authors in here as well, i am also all of the above (asian, bi/aro, poly, disabled) and tried to incorporate as many of their wickedly talented, compelling narratives as possible. that's all, happy reading!

avatrice au fic recommendations:
i don't think there is a single avatrice au fic that i haven't read so here are some my favorites. i tried to find ones that weren't as popular, so hopefully there are couple here you haven't read.
I want to believe by puppybusby @yashastrongarms - x files au - basically 23k of avatrice flirting while being incredibly reckless with alien shit. unfortunately, it is only a one shot that doesn't delve into their relationship, but it is so worth it. and the tension. woof.
Truly a Steadfast Love by StoicLastStand - medieval au - they have a whole series of ficlets, but this is one of my favorites. there's a tournament to win ava's hand in marriage, ava goes undercover to fight for her freedom, but she ends up falling for the very knight who everybody wants to win. i also love their lucifer au, Greater Sacrifices.
a lover, or something of mine by Smokestarrules - reincarnation au - each chapter is a different life with a different story, and i promise you, if you have anything that even resembles a heart, you will cry. i keep going back and rereading chapter 4 because apparently i love to hurt myself. i also love the world is just illusion (trying to change you) by them, it's a road trip au.
i should love you (and i swear i do) by Noteveryonefitsintothebadbitchgenre - harry potter au (fuck jk rowling) - its that trope where they're married and they talk about each other constantly but nobody actually knows they're married. their students all think that professor silva and professor young have a friendly rivalry, but there are a couple of moments that don't add up.
purple by sxftmelody - hitman au - technically, but really it's just sad, i always cry at the end. beatrice helps ava run away after a job, and slowly they open themselves up and start to fall in love. tw: major character death. also love turning page by the same author, mercenary/princess au.
in our corner of the world by definitelynotthere - roommate au - i know, i know, there's a thousand roommate aus, why would i recommend a fic that isn't even finished and will probably never get finished? i don't know, i just really love this one, and if you're like me, you'll go "ooh, two cakes" and read it anyway.
The last hero of Ogygia by jessnope - percy jackson au - specifically calypso au, ava is calypso and beatrice is the flirty hunter that washed up on her shore. it's super cute.
stay there, 'cause i'll be coming over (while our blood's still young) by britishngay - spiderman au - ava's character voice is actually designed to be spiderman, and bea is the perfect doctor lady that patches spidey up when she gets hurt. plus beatrice telling lilith to "shut up and sit down" will never not be iconic.
sunday people (sunday shines for you) by gilligankane @piratekane - another roommates au - jealous ava is back again and out for blood, specifically jenn-with-two-ns blood.
this is my prayer (I'm in love with you) by nyxtyka - my best friend's wedding/spies au - i'll be honest, this fic went to my marked for laters to die. i don't know if it'll ever be finished, but it is one of my favorite aus, i promise it'll be worth the pain.
spellbound by onomofication - witch au - beatrice is the witch in the woods that ava goes to to finally find a way to explore the world like she has always wanted to. but as she gets to know the surprisingly kind, serious, kinda-sorta witch, she discovers that maybe the world was smaller than she had once imagined. i also love another fic by this author, hit me with you best shot, which is basically a cupid au, where ava runs around trying to stop jc, a cupid, from shooting the love of her life, beatrice.
the celestial glow is blinding by understreetlights - firewatch au - did i think ava and beatrice sitting around, looking at trees, and falling love with each other through walkie talkies was going to be interesting? no, but the world loves to prove me wrong.
too cold, it's withdrawal by KatieQgle - captain america au - give this one a chance, even if you don't like marvel. beatrice is hot as fuck as bucky and honestly the winter soldier plot line needed a little sapphic yearning. come on, avatrice in the army in the 1940s, being badass and fighting nazis together? who wouldn't love that?
i have a ton more, reach out if you want them!

Confession: I have never read any Percy Jackson anything. I have no idea what the rules are, and I don’t care I just want more Hades’ daughter Lilith and Athena’s daughter Beatrice
oh i love love love writing Lilith as a daughter of Hades and Bea as a child of Athena. the parallels of Lilith belonging to death, the fact that she is a girl full of ghosts with a certain monstrous aspect, but also despite her best efforts she’s so so incredibly kind (everyone say thank you mary and shannon).
she probably definitely plays fetch with Cerberus when she’s in her cringe hell-hovel marinating after a month of deeply self-loathing heroism up on the surface.
and then Bea as a child of Athena 🥺 in the books a notable child of Athena has a yankees baseball cap that lets her turn invisible. smth smth beatrice making herself unseen and then stepping into ava’s light. and Athena is all cold rationality and strategy but in the books there’s a certain unhingedness to her children as well and it’s 😌 so extremely beatrice. she has weird girlfriend vibes the whole way to the ceiling.
also you are really not alone in not knowing all the rules lmao. it’s been at least a decade since i read the percy jackson books. but when i get things wrong i, like a proper adult, pretend that i was actually being really clever
example i forgot that demigods can’t have electronics (admittedly, chapter 1 was written at 2am over an entire pot of coffee with more love than sense) because it attracts monsters but i gave lilith a phone literally to make a joke about a snake eating it. did i own this mistake and edit the fic? no. 😌
i just decided i was right the whole time actually because lilith is suuuuuch a weirdo freak she would have phone specifically to attract monsters, on purpose, to feed her specific brand of haunted by the narrative/ ‘oops i self-inflicted the horrors. will be doing it again.’

Tilstitle
Description: Hi! This is owner one. Tilstitle is simply a story, fiction obviously, about a group of sticks trying to kill (a) God.
This is owner two; we have no idea what we're doing. We're just people having fun and hope you enjoy our silly guys.
Origins and plans: We’re just two neurodivergent people who got inspired by AVA (Alan Becker) and Percy Jackson who also happen to be artists (and writers) who faced art-block which unfortunately limited our abilities to only draw stick people. We are in the works of writing a prologue and a couple of acts for you guys, if there is any guys, to read.
Characters: We currently have 26 characters and plan to make more.
Extra: We’re open to questions/asks and we also hope to (maybe?) build our own fandom, if that is even possible!
Time zone: PST/PDT
pls don’t bully us

November Reading Wrap Up
This month I finished more books than ever before; granted, several were started earlier, so page-wise the difference is smaller, but still there. I think this is mostly because I didn't spend a lot of time gaming.
Shit I just noticed one of the books in the graphic isn't aligned but I'm not going back to change that.
Stats
total books read: 17
2023 reading challenge progress: 96 out of 100 (somewhat ahead)
formats: 3 digital, 4 audio, 9 physical
Books
I finished several 5 star reads this month. My absolute favourite was, no surprise, @re-dracula (yes I'm counting it as a book. in the end I did read Dracula after all).
• Re: Dracula by BloodyFM, Bram Stoker (audio, podcast)
rating: 5 out of 5 stars
This chronological audio adaptation of Dracula is the best Dracula adaptation out there with an incredible cast, fantastic sound design and awesome bonus songs. I cannot recommend it enough. Together with the Dracula Daily tumblr community it re-enlightened my special interest in vampires and Dracula to the point that I'm still thinking about it every day.
• Juniper & Thorn by Ava Reid (audio)
rating: 5 out of 5 stars
Dark fairy tale meets gothic horror in this retelling of The Juniper Tree. Absolutely loved it!
• Stemmen uit de bodemloze diepte by Anne Resseler (audio)
rating: 5 out of 5 stars
A Dutch YA horror novella that makes you feel the primal fear of the depths of the ocean in an atmospheric, even comforting way.
• The Seep by Chana Porter (digital)
rating: 5 out of 5 stars
This sci-fi novella with a unique take on alien invasion is wonderfully strange and existential. The short story included in this edition is also great.
• Chameleon Moon by RoAnna Sylver (audio, ARC)
rating: 5 out of 5 stars
I had read and loved Chameleon Moon once before, but the audio version made me love it even more! It's intense, emotional, and has amazing effects for ghostly and computerised voices as well as two original songs.
• Activestills: Photography as Protest in Palestine/Israel (physical)
rating: 5 out of 5 stars
A big book full of photos from Palestinian and Israeli activist photography collective Activestills, accompanied by essays and interviews. I greatly admire Activestills' work.
• Stories from Palestine: Narratives of Resilience by Marda Dunsky (digital)
rating: 4.5 out of 5 stars
Interviews with people of varying occupations from all around Palestine, combined with data and historical and political context, paint a picture of every day life in Jerusalem, Gaza and the West Bank.
• A Map of Absence: An Anthology of Palestinian Writing on the Nakba (digital)
rating: 4 out of 5 stars
A great introduction to Palestinian writing, containing poetry, short fiction and excerpts from novels and essays.
• The Queer Girl Is Going to Be Okay by Dale Walls (audio, ARC)
rating: 4 out of 5 stars
A great YA contemporary following three queer high school friends, examining the nature of queer love.
• The Chalice of the Gods by Rick Riordan (physical)
rating: 4 out of 5 stars
A fun book in the Percy Jackson saga, with lower stakes than usual which makes it a lighthearted adventure that still packs the occasional punch.
• Daughter of the Deep by Rick Riordan (physical)
rating: 4 out of 5 stars
Highly enjoyable modern take on Jules Verne feat. deep sea adventures, alt-tech, and an exploration of the weight of legacy.
• Spy x Family Vol. 1-6 by Tatsuya Endo (physical, borrowed)
rating: 4 out of 5
Action comedy that's just a lot of fun and unexpectedly touching.
Currently reading and TBR
I've just started, or am about to start (I've only read the introduction) Freedom Is a Constant Struggle by Angela Davis. I'm also reading the poetry collection Things You May Find Hidden in My Ear by Mosab Abu Toha, which is currently available for free among many other books for Read Palestine Week (link below).
I have a few more indie books on my TBR for Monster Manor Indie Autumn (extended through December), and A Thousand Steps into Night is my last 12 books for 12 friends read this year. (Send me a message/ask or fill in the question box on my instagram story if you have a rec for next year!)

I love how percy is so chill about everything. Like chiron goes "do you know what a full-fledged war between two of the most powerful gods would look like?" and percy's just like "uhh bad?"

Haiyaa~
I've been repeating these numbers for the past 15 seconds so 8, 12, 23 and 27 for the ask game <3
heyy! thanks for asking, i was literally dying of boredom here, and you came to the rescue.
8. What’s your favorite band/artist?
My favorite band would be ABBA and my favorite artist is Billie Eilish. Considering that I grew up with my dad's music, it's no surprise that i love ABBA.
12. Who are five (or more) people you want to hug right now?
My aunt, cause she just gave birth, but I can't go meet her or the baby cause she can't come to london, and i can't go to another country right now due to medical school.
My mother, cause she ordered and send a few books to me. The thing is, when i asked her why she send those, she just said it was cause she knew i've wanted those books for a long time. (It was the Young Elites Series by Marie Lu)
My best friend, cause i still haven't properly thanked her for looking after me when i was sick.
My study buddy at school, cause he took the time to make detailed notes for the lectures i missed, when i had to skip cause i was sick.
You, Ava, for sending me an ask and chasing my boredom away!
23. Do you believe in aliens?
I mean, as of now, there is no scientific evidence to see if aliens do exist. As long as scientific evidence is not given to prove this, then I don't believe in aliens.
27. What’s your favorite book? Or just one you’ve read a few times?
There are so many! Butttttt:
The Book Thief
The Hunger Games series
Every Percy Jackson book out there
Harry Potter (Just to confirm, I hate the author. She's a bitch)
The Legend Series
The Hobbit

September 2023 Reading Wrap Up
It has officially been a year of doing these reading wrap ups!
I read six books in September, amid a very busy month of school and work. Grad classes, working at college campus, and preparing for a trip all ate up most of my reading time. However, I managed to get through four physical books and two audio books. I completed a new favorite trilogy and started a reread of an old favorite.
1-3. The Broken Earth Trilogy by NK Jemisin (The Fifth Season, The Obelisk Gate, The Stone Sky) 5/5 star series. This series has been on my tbr since 2019 or so. I finally got around to reading it, and was absolutely hooked. I loved the narration, worldbuiling, and conclusion to the series. The Fifth Season was my favorite of the books, but honestly I loved all three. So unique and amazing- a new all time favorite series. Adult, post- apocalyptic fantasy.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
4-5. A Darker Shade of Magic & A Gathering of Shadows by VE Schwab (Shades of Magic Series). Since the Threads of Power book released in September, I've been wanting to reread the og trilogy. Since VE Schwab has let me down recently, I was worried that I wouldn't like this series anymore (especially since it is an old favorite). I got through the first two books on audio, and that was good decision for reread purposes. Both books were enjoyable and fun to re-listen to, if not the best things ever.
6. Animal, Vegetable, Miracle: A Year of Food Life by Barbara Kingsolver. This was my non-fiction for the month of September, and while this is by no means a new book, this book discusses topics and lifestyles that I am interested in-- mainly surrounding eating locally and seasonally, and growing your own food.

We have DSMP alters! That does NOT mean we support it. However, if that somehow makes you uncomfortable, please take your leave quietly. This applies to any problematic source.
"Doubles" are okay! We don't quite believe in exact doubles, considering the complexity of source material ^^
We are fictive heavy! We support all types of (VALID) systems. Whether you are fictive heavy, poly-fragmented, have a low head-count, etc. We like to enforce an open and welcoming environment! :-)
