hello, i was wondering if you knew anything (or if you could provide any sources) about georgian jews (gurjim)? if they assimilated in the georgian culture or converted to other religions?
The Georgian Jews’ diaspora is very ancient. The first Jews arrived in Georgia in the 5th century, when it was ruled by the Byzantine and Persian Empire, speaking a dialect known as Judeo-Georgian. From the Middle Ages through the first half of the nineteenth century a feudal system existed in Georgia. The Jews of Georgia belonged to the kamani, or serf class, under the Georgian elite, and were not forced to convert to Christianity. Moreover, Georgian kings used Jews in diplomatic service and often sent them to negotiations. For example in the 12th century Jewish head trader Zanjan Zorababeli brought a husband for Georgia’s first female king Tamar. The tradition of the relationship between Jews and other Georgians before the 19th century had no signs of anti-Semitism and Jews were an integral part of Georgian rural culture.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Over the centuries, the traditions and customs of this community also adopted many Georgian habits, most obviously those of the Georgian feasts and church holidays. The impact of Georgian culture is clearly seen in many areas, although equally evident is the similarity of the customs of the Georgian Jewish communities to those of the Jewish communities in Kurdistan, Persia and Turkey, which shows that, despite Georgia’s geopolitical isolation, the Jews always had close ties to their fellow believers living nearby.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Until the Modern period, most Georgian Jews lived in villages and engaged in agriculture, especially vitaculture. After the abolition of serfdom by the Russian authorities (1864–1871), the Jews moved to towns, settling around the synagogues they founded there, thus initiating a process of establishing communities.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The Red Army invaded Georgia in February 1921, prompting a mass exodus from the region. Approximately 1,500–2,000 Jews left Georgia for Istanbul and Palestine. The Bolshevik government discriminated against the Jewish community, arresting and murdering most of its leaders, scattering Jews forcibly among farms and factories and inciting blood libels up to the 1960s. The only surviving Jewish institution was the History and Ethnography Museum, but it was soon closed down and its director arrested in the early 1950s, thus signifying the annihilation of Jewish culture in Georgia, which the Soviets had built up during the prewar years. But despite their attempts, most Georgian Jews managed to observe their traditions and preserve their identity.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The situation of the Jewish community of Georgia improved dramatically after the fall of the Soviet Union. In 1994, President Shevardnadze issued a decree to protect Jewish religious, cultural and historic monuments. The Georgian Orthodox Church and the Jewish community of Georgia signed a cooperation agreement of mutual respect and support.
Many Georgian Jews now live in Israel. In the United States, the principal Georgian Jewish synagogue is the Congregation of Georgian Jews in the Forest Hills section of Queens, New York City. Georgian Jews are also member of the Antwerp, Moscow, Berlin and Istanbul Jewish communities. Of the 250,000 Georgian Jews today, only around 3,000 live in Georgia proper.

I just read the most recent comic, and I blitzed over here.
Is this secret other thing about how when going to the Feywild and back, you need to pass a wisdom check to see if you remember the trip? (You don't have to confirm or deny this, I just wanted to share my theory)
Also augh their faces in this one were such a gut punch! Incredible work once again! That little bit of mouth squiggle in the last panel make it look like they're in the beginning stages of 'trying not to cry, but that was almost a big upheaval for me'
Thank you for sharing!
quickly jotting that down in a little notebook and shoving it in my back pocket hoping you didn't see anything-
I love this theory, especially because I didn't know it was a thing!
Unfortunately, it's not that entrenched in actual Feywild lore. When they were younger, Croissant traded a memory to a hag in exchange for something. They assumed (and were assured) it wouldn't be anything too significant, but it ended up being the entire memory and concept of their childhood best friend. I keep waffling on whether or not I'll draw this, but if I decide not to, I'm sure I'll elaborate on it later.

Hi Wawa. I’m a 华人/SEAsian of Chinese descent interested in learning more about my heritage. Now I know where my family came from except but Great-grandpa from Dad’s side is a bit of a mystery. Dad’s side of the family are Hakka people from Guangdong, mom’s side are from Fujian. We don’t think Great-grandpa’s Hakka, at least not fully, but no one knows what he is. He might not even be Han. My dad thinks he’s Western Chinese, ‘he’s really tall and he looks like them’ he said. I asked Chinese friends and one of them said that’s probably wrong because normally it’s the Han going to Western China and not the other way around. I agree because what would a Western Chinese person be doing up in a random Guangdong mountain village? Another friend suggested he’s Shandong because they’re also known for being really tall. Do you have any idea what the truth is likely to be?
mmmm youknow.... sometimes, there is no discernible reason for the way people look. yes there is a stereotypical look of a people from a certain region, but not fitting the stereotype doesn't automatically mean they're from somewhere else!
your great grandpa might've just been a tall southerner lol (not impossible). and at this point, unless there are written records with insight, "the truth" here is probably just a family myth—something to gossip about when everyone gets together and start comparing physical attributes :P

hey hope yr good! was wondering if u have any tips on researching yr ancestry? diolch!
Thank you for the ask! I go about my ancestry research in a very specific way, but I'm happy to describe what I tend to do.
Researching your ancestry (or the ancestry of historical people etc.):
My number one tip for researching ancestry is having perseverance and patience in spades. It's important to know going in that you will get led up blind alleys, dead ends and amass plenty of non-starters, but don't get put off by this! In my experience, the information you're looking for is there, but you have to get real creative about how you go about finding it. Subscriptions to genealogy sites can be helpful too, but aren't a necessity if you're only interested in going a few generations back.
My number two tip is that in general, you will have more information starting out than you think you do. To use myself as an example, when I sat down to research my ancestry, all I knew about my biological family was my birth mother's name, birth city and date of birth - my grandparent's names and dates of birth and a few patchy bits of information about aunts etc. That was 3 years ago. Since then, I've been able to trace ancestors to the second half of the 17th Century. I don't know anything about my biological father's side, so my research was all matrilineal. Starting with my grandparents, I was able to cross-reference entries in the register of births to confirm I had the right people. Once you successfully do this, you can then start on locating your grandparent's parents. In my case, I went from knowing about 2 ancestors to 6 - adding in the 4 which are my matrilineal grandparent's parents. Then repeat the process as far back as evidence and records will allow.
My number three tip concerns the how of researching ancestors. It's all well and good saying 'confirm if X is the parent of Y' but how that's done is another matter.
Taking my own ancestors, lately I've been looking into my Irish ancestors. My matrilineal grandmother's maiden name begins with B [full name redacted for privacy] (naturally you'll need to acquire maiden names of female ancestors for certain bits - this can be done by speaking to family members if that's possible, or by ordering a copy of their marriage certificate. General Register Office index records in the UK will also display maiden names and appear on mainstream subscription genealogy sites). Having ordered my grandmother's marriage certificate and found her GRO index record, I was able to find her maiden name B. as well as her father's name. So then the next step is to find records of that name which match known details (e.g. the marriage certificate usually lists a profession, in the case of my great-grandfather, he worked in sheet metal). In order to identify my great-grandfather with 100% certainty, context like my grandmother's place of birth (Stockport) and year of birth (1950) theoretically places him in Stockport around that year (given 9 months leeway at least) - there's exceptions such as if a male ancestor died before their child was born or if they were never in the picture, but generally this is a rule of thumb. The next thing to do is find records of my great-grandfather in Stockport around 1950 - give or take ~10 years (this is more difficult with more recent ancestors due to census data not being available for most of the 20th Century yet). If one were to look at the 1939 Register (accessible via mainstream genealogy sites and in-person at Kew for free) a person matching my grandmother's father's first name, middle name and surname and who is married and worked in sheet metal is recorded in the same district my grandmother would be born in in 1950. A good start - but as with any good research, you gotta corroborate. In most cases, it would be fine to presume at this point that the woman my great-grandfather is married to in the 1939 Register is my grandmother's mother. However, upon checking the GRO Index of births, my great-grandfather and his wife's name do not come up when searching for my grandmother's birth record. Instead, my great-grandfather's name comes up with a different name. To be brief, the actual situation is that he separated from his first spouse before my grandmother who was born. Thus why his wife in 1939 *isn't* my great-grandmother. Upon checking the second spouse's name against the GRO index, my great-grandfather married her in the 1980s (thus legitimising my grandmother - one can only assume the law and taboo around divorce led to the delay in marrying his new spouse). Great-grandmother's name confirmed. So that gives me both my great-grandparent's names. But sticking with my great-grandfather, lets say I want to trace his father. Knowing more detail about my great-grandfather's later life means I can double check details of his early life. After having ordered his marriage certificate with his second wife (most certificates on the GRO are about £11 with second class post) I find out his father's name. Through that, I repeat the process above to verify and corroborate his father's details to match him 100%. Assuming by now I have my great-grandfather's parent's names through this method, I can locate his birth record on the GRO index and find my great-grandfather was born in 1912 in Liverpool.
And so on and so forth. If you're not in the UK you'll have to look up what resources (paid and free) are available in your country - but some records are possible to find online. My ancestors above were Catholic, so this resource was no use to me. But the Church of England Parish Clerk records for Lancashire are available online here, for example - with similar sites existing for other counties. Another thing is to make use of Boolean commands on Google. Typing "ancestor name" "[year]" "[city or town]" can bring up results - e.g. digitised books, records and newspapers in the public domain are indexed by Google and if you ancestor is mentioned in any of them, they will come up. This happened for me with an ancestor on my grandfather's side - some County Councils keep some historical records online and it turned out one of my ancestors had had sex with two men in 1769 (I guess it must have been the Summer of 69 tbqh!) who were both possibly the father of her child - the court decided they both had to pay child support to the parish (who actually raised the child ).
But remember that you can easily be led up blind alleys, so my biggest tip is still to corroborate and check your work as you go along. Like with my example, if I assumed my great-grandfather's first wife was my great-grandmother, I would have gone completely in the wrong direction. Historical records have a habit of being slippery fish so it's good practice to be critical of sources and make sure you're clear on the timeline of things. If you're using a paid genealogy site, getting things wrong or assuming things can affect other users (if they see your family tree and it has wrong information in it, that can mislead people down the wrong path as well). I've seen this mostly with North American users who might get a fact wrong about a European ancestor and will not notice, causing a lot of headache in setting the record straight. Carelessness from other users pollutes the timeline and can make it difficult for others to research an ancestor you have in common with them if you get it wrong. If you're researching an ancestor who is only a theory or a hypothesis, there are tags you can put on that ancestor's page which show they're a hypothesis/theory - which can really help others know so they don't take the information you have on the ancestor as fact. Despite this, still have fun with it and enjoy finding out more about your relatives - I hope that you're able to find this answer somewhat useful.
If you (or anyone else reading this) has any more questions, you are very welcome to make a comment or send another ask.
Good luck! Pob lwc!

What is your opinion on artists claiming the comparison between Asha and Isabella is racist? That they think it had to be racist that Asha and Isabella are described as to being alike.
It would be one thing if these are real life people and actors that are going through the "all brown people look the same" treatment, in which yeah that of itself would be racist
But they aren't. They are pixels. Animated characters that do in fact resemble one another when they really shouldn't. Disney animators designed these characters, meaning they of all people would understand the fundamentals in design philosophy. When it comes to creating character designs, there are a lot of factors to consider that most people in the industry had to learn. Although looking through concept art again, you can really tell Disney executives meddle with the overall look of the movie and the character Asha. (Although I will say one concept art was literally Isabella’s face but I digress)
I kinda explained what I mean in some of these reblogs and posts I made
But yeah, overall Asha’s design is very unoriginal and disappointing given the concept art we see of her in Amazigh clothing. If anything it’s racist on Disney’s parts for not pushing that mold just to play it safe

Adrestian: "Why would we follow someone who can't dye their hair properly?" Willy: "Show them the spin dive Seiros!" Adrestian: "The spin wha-" Now I'm imagining major crest people doing the most wild critical animations during the WoH or Rhea is an outlier who also surprised Nemesis by punching him in the opening. (Nemesis' thoughts: "Great... We're both disarmed‚ what's she gonna do punch me-")
Willy was the worst enabler ever, and encouraged her to do shit like the "spin drive" (since he didn't know what was a bullet) which is another reason why she's so fond of him!
I just find it funny how Seteth's seminar is all about proper and refined lance skills (hell is seminar is "A seminar on an ancient Fodlan fighting style utilizing lance skills"), like Cichol is a proper instructor... and then you have Seiros the Warrior doing random things like the "spin dive" and throwing her sword away to kick/punch people.
(also I just noticed but lol@Catherine's seminar's definition "A seminar on a fighting style in which practitioners dominate their opponent using improvised sword and melee techniques" -> it's just like Seiros the Warrior's technique, but given how Catherine mentions how Rhea only uses magic and sword when she fights, Archbishop Rhea dropped the "melee" techniques when she stopped being a fighter, maybe Catherine read some stuff about Saint Seiros and wanted to emulate her?)
HC Nabateans use the power of their crests in various ways when they fight, Rhea's spin dive has her kind of, jump and stand in midair before jumping, and given how she can jump 200 meters high, maybe her crest has some power to make her able to "walk/stand" on air, or something like that.
(Given how Cichol tried to teach humans, he used his crest less than his siblings, but the "Swift Strike" arte he invented is the way to mimick, for humans, the thing he does with his crest, when he hits someone and that someone is stunned, being open for a second blow.)
But in general, given how Nabateans can use their crests freely and at will (unlike humans) they can shape or use their powers in more creative ways that humans do.

My family is from Iasi, Romania and most were killed in the Iasi pogrom. I almost never see it mentioned, even with so many deaths. My great grandparents used to speak so fondly of their memories of Iasi before the war. Someday and I would like to visit and walk where they walked.
You should definitely visit Iaşi sometime! It was the largest and most important Jewish community of Moldavia. The presence of Jews was first documented in the late sixteenth century when Sephardic Jews arrived accompanying the new rulers appointed by the Turkish sultan. In 1551, the Jew “Emanuel” was nominated by the Turkish sultan to be the ruler of Moldavia, however it is not clear whether he actually ruled. In 1622, Prince Stefan Tomşa IX guaranteed Jews the right of residence and juridical autonomy, as well as its legal status as a religious guild (breasla jidovilor), after which there was a large influx of (mostly Ashkenazic) Jews to the region.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
They were involved in local commerce and trade with Poland and Turkey (mostly in wine and fish), in the production of local brandy (țuică), as well as in crafts. Contemporary documents also mention several doctors, among them the Venetian Sephardic doctor attending to Prince Vasile Lupu, and a healer by the name of Moise. The number of Jews in Iaşi increased in the second half of the nineteenth century, reaching 39,441 (50.8% of the town’s population) in 1899. In 1876, the first performance of the Yiddish theater, established by Avrom Goldfadn, was given in Iaşi. In the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, Iaşi became a center of Yiddish literature.
Tumblr media
On Saturday evening, June 28, 1941, Romanian and German soldiers, members of the Romanian Special Intelligence Service, police, and local residents murdered and plundered the Jews of Iasi. Thousands were killed in their homes and in the streets; additional thousands were arrested by patrols of Romanian and German soldiers and taken to police headquarters. The next day, “Black Sunday,” Romanian soldiers shot thousands of Jews who had interned in the police headquarters yard.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Approximately 4,000 Jews were packed into freight cars and vans. The “death trains” (Trenurile Mortii) were sealed and moved back and forth between railway stations for five days. Most of the Jews died of suffocation or thirst, and others lost their sanity. The death toll among the death trains would have likely been much higher on the trains had it not been for the mayor of the nearby village of Tirgu Frumos and Viorica Agarici, the former president of the Romanian Red Cross, who ordered that the Jewish prisoners were given food and drink and the corpses be removed. The pogrom, that had almost 14.000 victims, was declared a war crime in Romania in 1947, and the members of the military and the local police who had been responsible for it were arrested.
After World War II Iaşi played a prominent part in the revival of Yiddish culture but a wave of anti-Jewish persecution by the Communist regime in the 1960s/70s led to a declining Jewish population. Today there are about 300 to 600 Jews and one synagogue.

Unhinged Anon again, and you bringing up the track from S3E10 (which is probably my favorite from season 3. It’s just so cool and terrifying but also so sad and angry? At one point it's like the song is sobbing and screaming at the same time. The word Lament’ definitely suits it) has me thinking about MK and Mei in S3E10 again, and I’m just… thinking.
Thinking about MK constantly trying to bring attention back to Mei, ignoring or interrupting anything that doesn’t involve getting answers about/helping her. Thinking about MK dismissing Wukong and Macaque’s attempts to stop him from trying to save Mei. Thinking about MK physically wrenching himself from Wukong’s grasp to get to her. Thinking about how this is one of the few times we see MK choose to directly disobey an order (implied or otherwise) from Wukong without someone else manipulating him. Thinking about how this is the first time (I think) that we see MK actively pull away from Wukong. Thinking about MK choosing to leave Wukong behind as he heads into the fire for Mei.
Thinking about "it’s scary being alone", and MK not hesitating to rush in knowing no one else could, or at least was willing, to back him up, because he’ll do this alone if it means she doesn’t have to. Thinking about how, once MK enters that fire, there is not a moment where his hands aren’t in front of him. Not a moment where he stops reaching towards her. Thinking about how he had zero assurances that Mei was physically capable of stopping the Samadhi fire, or that she was even listening considering she doesn’t respond to his words, and how that deters him about as much as being slowly burned alive AKA not at all. Thinking about MK being the only person to directly address Mei, and talk to her instead of at or about her.
Thinking about Mei raging at Wukong for his lies and betraying “all of [them]”, but putting special emphasis on how he’s hurt MK specifically (Side note: I think the delivery of the “Time and time again [..] leaving him to figure out everything on his own!” line is my favorite of the whole episode. Stephanie Sheh did such a fantastic job). Thinking about MK’s name being the only one she uses the entire episode. Thinking about Mei’s lineage, something she had finally come to embrace with pride and confidence after feeling out of place for most of her life, being what condemns her to her status as the fourth ring, but also what saves her from being consumed by the fire. Thinking about "If you’re not giving everything you have to protect the people you care about, you are nothing", and Mei watching her own power lash out and hurt her best friend. Thinking about Mei only being the fourth ring because Ao Lie was prepared to sacrifice himself for his friend, taking the hit for Sanzang. Thinking about Mei having the Samadhi fire because of an act of friendship and loyalty from centuries ago. Thinking about Mei’s love for her friend, and his love for her, being what initially allows her to control the fire.
Thinking about all of Mei’s “we have to try” moments, and ‘fakin’ it ‘til we makin’ it’, and her completely giving in to rage, hurt, and fear, almost destroying herself and the people she loves as she does so. Thinking about how it’s Mei’s own (partial) words from ROTSQ that MK brings up and throws back at her. Words that she offered him when he was feeling lost, and overwhelmed, and had no idea what to do. Thinking about Mei always happily offering MK all the unyielding patience, encouragement and forgiveness that he rarely grants himself, and desperately needing someone to offer her the same. Thinking about MK not hesitating to provide it.
Thinking about how MK and Mei are constantly reaching for each other throughout the show, but it’s when they connect that the seemingly impossible is achieved.
Thinking about MK looking at Mei through a sea of flames and saying ‘I see what you’re going through, and I see that you’re hurting, and I’ve been there, and I know how scary and overwhelming it is, and it is totally okay for you to feel these things, but it is not okay for you to think that you have to endure them alone, and I am going to stick by your side and weather them all with you exactly like you’ve done for me, and you are my best friend, and I love you, and I’m here for you’.
Thinking about “We will figure this out. Together”.
…I hate this show *said while cradling it close to my heart*
Also, to completely shift tones and topic: I saw you discussing names for the MK-Mei-SWK-Macaque quartet, and I’m not creative enough to do anything with this information, but I would like to point out that all of their names (or in Monkey King’s case, one name) start with “M”. I don’t know if this could be used to develop a fun group name, but it is something that they all share. Also, yes! I have considered starting tdp! I just need to set aside, like… a weekend or something for me to binge it all. Anyways, hope you have a wonderful day! *waves from the precipice of madness, smiling while tears stream down my face because the monkie show broke me again*
EXACTLY. IT'S WHY THE MK AND MEI DYNAMIC IS SO FUCKING GOOD.
They constantly leave and reach for each other.
I think “Time and time again [..] leaving him to figure out everything on his own! Don't you realize you're hurting the people who care about you the most?” is one of my favorite deliveries in the whole show, along with the entire "To pain" scene at number one and Macaque yelling at Wukong in 4x11 ("Not the great sage, he has to drag everyone else into his mess!").
Here's a list of names for the MK, Mei, Wukong, and Macaque quartet I've been tempted by:
Dragonmask (like the monkey "masks" MK, SWK and Macaque have. I'm kind of biased for this one)
Hero&Warriors (Leaning away from this one, mainly because I think more than only these 4 goobers could be considered Heroes and Warriors.)
M Krew
MeicaKing (It's ugly, I know)
Iris Quartet (I'm thinking of a purple iris, which is it's namesake in Chinese—"purple butterfly"—mainly because it's made up of the colors purple and yellow for the petals and green for the stem. The Iris in China symbolizes the return of spring, and is viewed as a protector.)
Side note: For a MK, Mei, and Macaque trio I think I'd call them the "Forgotten Trio" (Like "the warrior was forgotten by the hero" lol).

So does that mean Geten is Redestro's adopted kid now since it has been confirmed he raised him
not to knock any sandcastles over, but imo Re-Destro is as much as a father to Geten as Endeavor (pre-Kamino) is to his kids 😔🙏 i realize that it is tempting to think of a tiny Geten toddling after single father Re-Destro, but... then i would compare Re-Destro to All for One, in terms of picking up lost children off the streets and honing them into weapons for their cause.
(which actually makes a wonderful parallel to poke at in dfohiko twins verse! wow, can you imagine Rikiya being proud about having 'personally raised' Geten? but because he's unfortunately a product of his upbringing, he actually just followed in the steps of AFO, and became not a dad, but a father figure to try and impress?)
((he brags about having an adopted son to Toshinori when they have a reunion, and Toshinori restrains himself from pulling out his phone and showing off pictures of his new adopted son))
but let's look at the evidence for canon!
first and foremost, the line that 'confirms' that Re-Destro raised Geten.
"The few remaining [Himura branch] families and their members scattered, including myself. Which is when Re-Destro came upon me and brought me into the fold." (c387, Geten)
no age range indicated, unfortunately. if i threw a dart, though, between Dabi (age 23-24) and Rei (age... 44. not canon, but if it was younger, we'd probably be holding multiple knives to Endeavor's throat), i'd put Geten around mid-30s. just old enough to know he should flee and ditch the Himura name.
the phrase "into the fold" is, uh, not very familial. which leads me to my second quote.
"Elevating one's [Quirk] ability will be the only way to really live! Beyond that sheer strength... life has no value!" (c230, Geten)
this does not sound like a young man who had an easy upbringing! you say 'adopted,' i say 'recruited.' unlike with Sorahiko and Toshinori, i don't think Geten was staying in Re-Destro's spare bedroom, or even personally trained by him.
based off what Geten absorbed of the MLA's philosophies, i think Re-Destro chucked him into the MLA-equivalent of Bible camp and offhandedly directed Geten to become stronger in order to meet him again.
tl;dr I totally believe Geten wasn't brought to Re-Destro's attention until the MLA heard of the LoV, at which point they believed his ice (previously WAYYY too flashy to be of use for the MLA) could counteract Dabi's flames.

Hmm I don't think she's that tall. Probably still shorter than Asheera.
I don't have numbers for everyone in mind yet, but to give it a vague order of height amongst the Women in my headcanons:
Karlach > Aylin, Asheera > Lae'zel > Jaheira, Alfira, Lakrissa > Shadowheart, Isobel, Nocturne > Minthara
