I've said this so often but saying it again and please reblog.

"But people headcannon straight people as lgbt+ without a problem, why is it an issue for aroaces"

Is such a bullshit argument.

Cause what character is actually confirmed straight? Genuinely name me one, not assumed because it's still the default, or because they like someone of a different gender.

But writers or an actor or said in the media and never retconned, confirmed straight.

That's the difference.

(Fuck Marvel for supporting genocide and I don't even ship it but the most common example)

Shipping Bucky and Steve doesn't erase anything because neither character is confirmed straight.

Shipping Yelena and Bucky or Kate blatantly ignores Devin Grayson (Also fuck her for how bad she screwed nightwing) confirming she's ace and clearly implying she's aro just didn't realise it needed to be specified too.

It ignores the line in Pale Little Spider #2 "I'm not a lesbian, Im not anything" and the entire trio of those comics where Yelena is baffled about the idea of sexual attraction.

(And don't you dare tell me that's out of context I've read it multiple times I know the context).

It also ignores other aroace characters that have had their identity erased for the sake of plot. Jughead Jones and Shatterstar to name two, I've even seen a fic shipping the High Republics beloved Vernestra Rwoh and while I don't believe her identity will be erased in Acolyte (cause HR fans will riot) it's still a major concern new fans will.

However shipping Vernestra is not comparable to shipping say Reath and Bell because neither character is confirmed straight.

This isn't even touching on the fact (cis) straight people don't experience discrimination for being queer (both from queer and non queer people) and have already got tons of rep to see themselves in.

Mild rant on Alastor bc I'm tired.

I was going to stay out of this so rip to my inbox.

Does anybody remember the whole ace doxing list on here? The whole discussion of not shipping gay characters with the opposite gender? The rep for pan/bi representation and the steps to do it right? Does anybody remember when ppl on here discussed how aros and aces aren't a part of the queer community bc they're not 'gay enough' in a way? Bc I do. That was about a decade ago. And I remember when Alastor was first introduced in the pilot and ppl not accepting he was aroace back then.

It doesn't matter if Alastor is entirely aroace and if he's capable of dating or not.

What matters is we still have so little ace representation and acceptance, especially aroace rep, that a few years ago when a real person Jaiden Animations came out as aroace, ppl tried to destroy her, bc even with a perfect valid explanation of her just saying aroaces are their own thing and she just doesn't want to date, ppl treated it like she was lying or was trying to sneak into the queer community and was straight or all the other horrible things yall might remember "fans" did to her.

Alastor being aroace isn't about being the rep of "Aroaces can feel attraction!!!" bc be real honest.

How many aroace popular characters can ppl list that a regular person on the street is going to know? Bc I've heard all their arguments to invalidate their representation.

Jughead? Oh you mean Cole Sprouse who made out and got it on with Lili Reinhart playing Betty bc he found her sexy? Oh but in the old comics he's a gay character whose in denial. Yelena Boleva? Who? Oh that woman? She's hot she's just traumatized and needs to find the right person. Charlie Weasley? Oh he was only in the books? He was confirmed as aroace through a passive comment most ppl didn't know about from the author that never used the term? Luffy? You mean one of the most shipped characters in One Piece? No he's just an idiot/childish so he doesn't understand girls are pretty. Caduceus Clay? Sorry I didn't watch Critical Role whose that? Are you sure he's aroace? He feels gay to me.

I can list more ppl, but I'm sure most ppl couldn't.

I remember the whole discussion of the pan/bi representation argument of "Yes! We know pan/bi ppl can date the opposite gender. But straight ppl don't know about pan/bi nearly at all or don't accept it," so showing it as gay, who know the term more, until it's shown clearly the character is queer and not "confused straights" they then can have opposite gender attraction. Bc sooooo many pan/bi characters end up "straight" at the end of their show/book. Bc I remember when ppl refused to accept that Deadpool is pan bc of his wife and started freaking out when he dated a nonbinary person in the comics or helped that one genderqueer person he knew.

Representation is about showing to ppl what they're not understanding about the identity in the plainest sense of the words of the identity, then when there's enough rep to show they're not all the same, then you can have the ones that break the rules.

Alastor whether or not he wants to date doesn't matter. What matters is this whole situation blew out of proportion bc ppl refused to accept that some ppl don't feel comfy shipping him. Bc they see themselves in him and don't want that. BUT! Also ppl under the aro and ace umbrella also have no rep and wanted to see him breaking the stereotype they probs have yelled at them of "You can't have a partner you're aroace I forbid it" and wanted to see thru their own experiences how that would be done.

Here's the problem.... As someone who has read a lot of aroace headcanon fanfics as an aroace....... A lot of ppl who are allo don't realize aroace "crushes" are missing emotions... That's why they're aroace. And they'll write them like they're the same just "muted" or "needs to warm up" kinda thing. Or make the character's love "childish" to explain the lack of romance/sex. Which is messed up. And that's the problem here.

Alastor didn't need to be this blown out of proportion of a situation. The problem is ppl found him sexy and the classic "But aroace hot, they can't be aroace bc why hot?" discussion got brought back up without the gentle post format discussions and instead it was a lot of shippers on tiktok with tiny word counts arguing a complex issue.

Ppl should be allowed to ship whatever (except problematic I know yall too well), especially if they see themselves in the characters and especially if they have the same identity and want to explore that!!

The truth of the matter is this is such a huge issue that just keeps happening bc ppl are too used to fandom queer spheres where ppl already know aroace means "off the table" and so they want to play with qprs or grayromantics/sexuals not knowing what that entails bc there's sooooo lil aroace rep that actually explores being aroace and a lot of ppl don't know the basics, and even how very different aroace "off the table" is when you aren't the classic "uwu I'm just innocent and have no friends or importance to the plot so just ignore me and have me be adopted by one of the main couples as a 'kid' figure."

Not to mention that a lot of ppl still think ace means aroace. That aces can't date bc there's ppl who don't know that romantic and sexual attraction are different!

I'm just.... So tired. So very tired of having ppl shout at me what it means to be aroace and being unable to look up the lil aroace rep we have bc of this issue I've seen a million times is all.

A lot of people are shipping Yelena because her creator confirmed that she doesn’t have a canon sexuality and that people can hc what they want for Yelena. However her creator said that she sees Yelena as ace but would prefer women over a man. So that in a way would be her canon sexuality ig

yes i am aware of what her creator has said!

yelena declined being attracted to women either way, she is not a lesbian, even if you don’t want to consider her aromantic, she would be heteroromantic ace in that case.

but i truly believe she is aro as it is implied, if any other sexuality (like lesbian, bi) was implied it would be takes as canon without hesitation, so we should do the same for her aromantic identity.

and honestly even if it was confirmed in mcu, there would be tons that don’t give a fuck, because the issue isn’t her aromantic identity being confirmed fully, but aphobia, the argument „aros can date” would still be used, because even though she is asexual people use „asexuals can have sex” argument or overall ignore the canon.

because of my 'bad' behaviour on the field, Clint has made me stay back to fix some trick arrows instead of going out with him and Kate on some retrieval mission. Which I admit does suck. But jokes on them, I love making trick arrows.

i spin in my chair grabbing a 'very dangerous' arrow and laughing at the label Kate put on it before placing it in the bag of arrows I've already made.

The radio is blasting some grunge rock music, the sun isn't out because it's winter in New York. However, it's snowing which is amazing for me.

I nod my head to some AC/DC song, my hair is in a messy bun, I flip my safety goggles up to get a better view of the snow falling onto the ground outside.

"KATE BISHOP" a unfamiliar voice rings through the room, making me tense up, I spin around to the source of the raspy voice and see a woman, about my age, blonde hair and a cute outfit on.

"she's not here" i state in a monotone voice, just as I had been trained, when in doubt stay calm until Kate panics.

the woman's eyes widen and she looks at me with a light blush, probably from the cold New York weather. "she will be back in like ten minutes, give or take, if you go to the living room and wait there, her number is on the table if it's urgent" i smile politely, the woman nods and quickly exits the room.

YELENA’S POV :

Kate Bishop and Clint Barton have been on my ass all Christmas, my mission was simple. Get revenge on him who murdered my sister, anyone who dares to try stop me, will be killed. I've recently found the location of where Clint Barton is staying while having his holiday in New York. That means today is the day Mr Barton dies. I walk into the apartment, the door is not locked however the house is empty. Is what I think until I hear a familiar song. Some old song from my youth, it's loud and sounds like metal. What a song to die to. I smirk as I turn the corner to see the back of someone's head. Black curly hair faces away from me. Well that's not the figure I was expecting. Maybe it's the protégé.

"KATE BISHOP" i shout making my presence known to the small figure.

The raven haired person spins around in their chair just to reveal, to my dismay they are not Kate Bishop.

"she's not here" the woman states with a shrug. the girl is beautiful and the voice matches the face. "she will be back in like ten minutes, give or take, if you go to the living room and wait there, her number is on the table if it's urgent" follows the previous comment, the girl smiles mockingly toward me.

All I can do is nod, and when I tell you I've never picked my phone up so quickly I mean it. Once I'm in the living room I pull my phone out, putting the number into my contacts and deciding to send a quick message to the Bishop child.

I aggressively type "Bishop, who the fuck is that fine ass woman in your apartment? You know the one with the fuck me eyes? And the fuck me face? And the fuck me fingers? I'm going to need her full name, address and her relationship status."

I hit send and not even a minute later a message comes through from the Bishop child. "Hey, I'm guessing your Yelena, yeah please refrain from talking about my best friend like that"

and with a devious smirk I stumble to push my phone back into my Jean pocket and walk out of that apartment in hopes of seeing the girl with the fuck me eyes once more.

Hey V, I saw your bishlova fic and I thought I'd just let you know that in comics Yelena doesn't have a defined sexuality. The creator of Yelena has confirmed this and has said if she's anything it's a lesbian but she's happy with any headcannon for her.

Yep. Knew it. Can’t publish 7 bishova ficlets without one of you guys coming in to give me a stern talking-to. I actually think I know who you are (not naming names though). I just want to say that there are many explanations for Yelena being in a relationship with Kate. (Important points are in purple if you don’t want to read all I have to say.)

I think this is the most important thing to remember, personally: the comics are separate from the mcu. Take Wanda Maximoff, for example: a Jewish Romani woman in the comics and a fucking WASP played by L*zzie Ols*n in the mcu, and they went as far as putting crucifixes over her bed in the Avengers compound. I am writing fanfiction about Yelena Belova as she is portrayed in the mcu by Florence Pugh dating Kate Bishop as she is portrayed in the mcu by Hailee Steinfeld. I think what aroace Yelena truthers also tend to forget is that Kate in the comics is canonically straight (and she has explicitly said that), which is why I’m not writing fanfiction about Kate from the comics, I’m writing it about Kate from the mcu, where there are only a few characters who have a canon/confirmed sexuality, and neither Kate nor Yelena are part of that group.

If you, anon, are who I think you are, you are ace yourself, so I’m surprised that you’ve forgotten about tertiary attraction. For those who don’t know, tertiary attraction is attraction that isn’t romantic or sexual, including alterous attraction, which is the desire for emotional closeness and often results in an aroace person getting into a QPR (queer-platonic relationship, meaning neither sexual, romantic, or platonic). In my ficlets, I have never explicitly defined Kate and Yelena’s relationship. It can be romantic or not. That is up to your interpretation only. The only way I’ve explained their relationship is that they’re girlfriends. I have also never explicitly stated that Yelena is romantically attracted to Kate (or, while we’re at it, that Kate is romantically attracted to Yelena). Besides, aro people can even be in romantic relationships if they want, without feeling attraction. To summarize: Yelena could easily be in a QPR with Kate, it’s your interpretation of my writing.

"chemfrost-domestic" or "aro ace yelena" for the WIP list?

aro ace yelena - I've had this on my list of moodboards to do since I saw Black Widow and Hawkeye in quick succession and then came across the discourse about Yelena Belova's sexuality when looking up stuff for the fandom. I know that the MCU version of Yelena hasn't had confirmation that's she's ace (and probably also aro) like the comics character but it sucks when ace rep is ignored, so I decided to headcanon her MCU version as both ace and aro too and I wanted to make a little something for that. It's very, very close to being done now, but I have a few fixes to do for it where Canva didn't quite do borders correctly.

chemfrost-domestic - I started this for the simplysnowbarry Spring event using the line “So... is this like a thing now?” With how chemfrost is as a pairing, usually it's all about the heists and other criminal jobs, one upmanship and banter. With this I was trying to do something a little unexpected and wanted to write about them reluctantly being soft with each other, though there's still banter and an element of competition. I got stuck on some technical issues, because I was fixated on getting CSI type stuff correct, but I probably just need to bang this out and not look back since it was only meant to be something short and semi-sweet.

since i’ve been seeing a lot of posts on my dash of people shipping kate bishop with yelena belova, i feel the need to make a friendly reminder that yelena is canonically aroace.

creator/author devin grayson said in an interview that yelena is “more likely to identify as asexual than to follow Nat’s romantic path.”

in this panel from a comic, another character asks yelena if she is a lesbian, to which she emphatically replies, “no, i’m not a lesbian. i’m not... anything.”

now, if you’re not aware, it is incredibly rare for aromantic asexuals to have any canonical representation in popular culture. there are aroaces in webcomics and podcasts, sure, but in the kind of media that your straight friend can actually name? almost unheard of. and for that aroace character to be a person instead of a robot or alien? doubly almost unheard of.

the point i am getting to here is that i need you guys to be fucking respectful in your fanworks. i need you to not erase yelena’s orientation and make her allo just because you want to make two hot ladies kiss.

i’m not saying that you can’t ship them, and i’m not trying to rain on your parade. there’s nothing wrong with wanting two hot ladies to kiss. but i personally find it deeply offensive when people change an aro/ace character’s orientation because it’s “boring” and it gets in the way of your desire to make them bone and/or fall in love. seeing that really fucking sucks for us.

of course i can’t speak for all aroaces, but as an aroace it makes me feel pretty shitty to see post after post calling yelena a lesbian, and even shittier to know that a lot of people will continue doing that even if they see this post or other posts from other aroaces talking about this. it feels like the queer community doesn’t really care about us much, because fantasizing about two attractive women kissing is more important than some actual aroace representation, or caring about how we feel.
