❖ — When Ao’nung saw you for the first time, he held a dislike for you because you were a “demon”. After everything his mother told him about the sky people, he assumed that you were the same. He was cold toward you in the beginning, but with a mix of your beauty and charming personality, he began to grow feelings for you and soon after, you both became a couple.
❖ — The first thing he noticed about you was your height. In his eyes, you were the height of a child, which always caused him to crack some type of joke that you didn’t find funny or amusing.
“You are so little, I could literally crush you.”
“How are you and Tuk almost the same height?!”
❖ — He thought your height was an advantage for some things and one of them was ‘spicy time’.
“You are eye level with my waist, that will come in handy when you suck my-” Your eyes widen at his comment and you hit him in the chest, forcing him to not finish his sentence. “Shut up, skxawng! That’s all you think about!”
❖ — Whenever you and the group hang out, somehow his arm always manages to rest on your head. He saw you as his “personal armrest” and he took advantage anytime both of you were standing next to each other. You always tell him that he’s being annoying, but deep down you love him being comfortable with you in that aspect.
❖ — When both of you talked, you always had to look up to him, which gets aggravating at times when your neck starts to hurt. Ao’nung noticed this, so sometimes when both of you talk, he’d sit down and let you stand so both of you will be at eye level.
❖ — Walking around the village would be tiring for you at times especially since everyone around you had bodies more equipped for the environment. Whenever you began to lag behind, Ao’nung became your mode of transportation.
“Do you want me to carry you the rest of the way?”
Ao’nung would let you get on his back and he would take you wherever the destination was, which you appreciated because you didn’t know how much longer you were going to last.
❖ — When he started teaching you the way of water, you were eager, but it was hard for you, being human in a Na’vi environment wasn’t easy. Whenever you were having doubts or he heard you mumble about giving up, he was right there encouraging you (sometimes with spicy incentives).
“You got this, syulang! I’m right here with you.”
“If you hold your breath a little longer this time, when we finish our lesson, I’ll take you to my marui and do that thing you like.” He ends his sentence in a singsong tone and a small smirk on his face knowing that his words would motivate you.
After he said that, you held your breath twice the time you did before. Ao’nung was so proud of you that he couldn’t wait to take you home. He carried you into a secluded area of the jungle and happily rewarded you for breaking your record.
❖ — Whenever you and him held hands he made sure not to squeeze your hand too tight because he didn’t want to crush you. He always made sure to treat you delicately because he knew how fragile humans were to Na’vi.
“Ao’nung, can you give me a real hug? I haven’t seen you all day.”
“I don’t wanna squeeze you too tight or I’ll hurt you.”
❖ — Whenever you spend the night in his marui, both of you would cuddle together and you would have the best time being the little spoon. Feeling his big arms curled around your small waist, burying your head in his broad chest, him every so often giving your skin a soft kiss made you want to melt instantly. Him being so affectionate and gentle with you was hands down one of the things you loved most.
❖ — He loves you and your human body and wouldn’t trade you for anyone on Pandora. The only person he wants is you. You were his precious tawtute and he loved you with every fiber in his body.

Saccharine [Pt. 1] 🐚
Ao’nung x fem!metkayina!reader
Summary - Ao’nung is your best friend, and a possessive, domineering, and strangely quiet asshole who tends to unintentionally terrify anyone and everyone he interacts with.
Warnings - toxic friendship (obsessive and controlling on Ao’nung’s part.), smut in future parts, angst in future parts, kinda fluffy?, pretty boring. Short chapter, the rest’ll be longer.
‘ Ao’ chuckles under his breath, the expression on his face condescendingly amused as he pulls out of the hug, his hands on your shoulders. “Yeah, do you now? want me to stay ‘nd sleep with you, huh, sweetie?” ’
——/——/——/——/——/——/——/——/——/——/
You brush your ever so pretty seashell-adorned braids behind one ear, looking around at your fellow clan members gathered for dinner. When you set your eyes straight ahead, you’re met with Ao’nung’s piercing gaze. His eyes are hard, glaring through you. You don’t have the chance to wonder why, as your thoughts are interrupted by a hand on your shoulder.
You turn around, coming face to face with Nìhek, a fisherman a little bit older than you.
“Hello.” He murmurs, with a smirk that shows off his bright and sharp canines.
“Oh! Nìhek, hi! How are you?” you smile sweetly, tilting your head and sending your braids cascading across your skin.
“I’m doing well, hon.. oh, um..” His sentence trails off as his eyes trail away from you. At the same time, warm and rough hands land on your hips.
“Sweetheart.” A voice groans in your ear, warming your heart.
“Ao’!” You squeal childishly, whirling around and sending your braids whipping through the air as you throw your arms over your friend’s shoulders. Burying your face in his neck, you sigh comfortably, welcoming the safety of Ao’nung’s muscular, protective arms wrapped around your lower back.
“Nìhek.” Ao’nung impassively greets the man as you untangle yourself from his chest and turn back around. Once you do so, his arms don’t hesitate to wrap back around your waist, holding you against him as his chin rests gently on your shoulder.
“Are you two… mated..?” Nìhek questions, his words slow and stretched out.
“Mm-mm.” Ao’ hums, leaning his cheek against your jaw, and tightening his arms around your waist.
“He’s just my friend.” You explain, smiling innocently, oblivious to Ao’nung’s intimidating death stare looming over your shoulder and holding Nìhek’s attention.
“Yeah, um. I’m going to go, okay? see ya, kid.” The fisher says, pushing the words out quickly, walking away the second he finishes.
“Bye!” You call out, watching him leave, before turning to face Ao’nung once again. “You scared him off.” you whine and pout, drawing out the end of your sentence pathetically.
“I don’ care.” He scrunches up his nose, as if offended that you would imply he had any regard at all for your dating life. “My dad’s hosting a dinner party tomorrow for a bunch of his colleagues. He wants me to bring a guest.”
“Oh, I don’t think-” You begin attempting to politely excuse yourself from the event.
“I’m not asking you, I’m telling you. You’re going to go with me.” He says.
“Oh.” You utter, slightly put off by his demand. “Okay..”
“Good girl.” He smiles. “It’s getting late. You want me to walk you home?”
“I would love that Ao’nung.” you beam at him and slide your hand into his, as he begins to lead you through the crowds of people mingling amongst each other.
The further you get, the smaller the crowds become, until you eventually escape the gathering altogether. Ao’nung tries to pull his hand away from yours once the both of you are alone, only for you to pull it back to your side. He chuckles softly, warmly. It comforts you.
Still, you can’t stop his hand from leaving yours once you reach your marui.
“Goodnight.” He pulls you into a hug as he speaks, pressing your body to his. Your arms wrap around him, tugging him impossibly closer.
“Wan’ you to stay..” You murmur, your voice muffled by your cheek squished against his chest.
Ao’ chuckles under his breath, the expression on his face condescendingly amused as he pulls out of the hug, his hands on your shoulders. “Yeah, do you now? want me to stay ‘nd sleep with you, huh, sweetie?”
Your breath catches in your throat, surprised by his implications, but you simply roll your eyes and move on.
“Please?” You pout, grabbing his muscular forearms before drifting your hands into his much bigger ones. A begging look is painted on your face as you look up to meet his eyes with your wide, questioning ones.
Ao’nung groans, running his hand over his hair. Quickly, he twists his exasperated expression into a soft and much more pleasant one, and he looks down at you. “Of course I will.” He smiles, squeezing your hands as they gently rest in his.
“I never could resist you, could I?” He murmurs, chuckling as he trails after you into your marui and lays down behind you on your sleeping mat. You move back, pressing your body against him as you begin to rest, and his warm, strong arms snake around you protectively.
His arms around you grant you the most restful sleep of your life.

Astray — pt.2
☁️ Ao’nung x Metkayina Reader x Neteyam
🧷 warnings: angst, jealousy, toxic!Aonung
a/n: Sorry for the longest delay ever. I’ll be honest with you I had the worst writers block with this one but anyways enough with the sob story. Hope this is okay :p
📑 Ao’nung starts to act weird and you have no idea why. You try to ignore him but he proves to make that a hard task when he starts to interfere with you and Neteyam.
Tumblr media
You push back against him until he finally takes his hand off of your mouth and gives you some space. You huff, adjusting yourself before standing up straight. Although you’d been avoiding Ao’nung, you were some what relieved it was just him and not a stranger. Still, you weren’t exactly thrilled to see him either.
“What’s wrong with you? Why would you grab me like that?” You seethe, still recovering from the fright he’d just given you. He doesn’t respond yet, just observing you as you mutter incoherently to yourself.
“You are not going back to your marui, you liar. Where are you headed?” He interrogates you, standing in your way to stop you from leaving.
“Getting some air. Go back home” You huff before you attempt to move past him yet again, he stops you— holding out his arm to block you, which causes you to bump into it. At this point, his intrusion is starting to annoy you and you can’t hide the way it spreads to your face.
“You’re seeing the Sully boy aren’t you?” Ao’nung says accusingly, giving you a look of disbelief before you can even say anything.
“And what if I am? Why do you care” You question him, watching as the look on his face falters at your tone. He drops his arm before he shrugs— going back to his usual nonchalant act.
“I don’t care. I just wanna know why you lied” He scoffs before he finally moves out of your way to let you pass. You take the opportunity to finally get past him enough so he can no longer block you.
“Please don’t tell anyone, Ao’nung” You plead and when he doesn’t respond, you repeat it yet again.
“Please”
“I’ll keep your secret safe… for now” He tuts, you thank him quietly and although you don’t fully trust his word— you spare him one last glance before you continue on your way. It was strange, the way he was interrogating you was out of character for him to say the least. He didn’t care where you roamed before so why did he suddenly care now.
Ao’nung was wasting your time and energy yet again, you scold yourself internally as you make your way toward Neteyam who’s sitting on the sand. He stands when he sees you, a wide smile gracing his features when he sees you approaching him.
“I apologise for being late. I got held up”
“No need to apologise— I’d wait all night for you if I had to” Neteyam hums as he pulls you into a hug, you feel your face warm at his comment— grateful that it was too dark for it to be noticeable.
The two of you move to the forest line of the reef, making sure you’re well hidden away from the marui before you relax and talk. With Neteyam, you can talk about literally anything and everything and you would never run out of things to talk about. He always listens and has something thoughtful to say too— something you realised Ao’nung never did. Your conversations were always one sided, flat and consisted of him walking off most of the time.
“I want to give you something” Neteyam says softly before he pulls out the necklace that you used to wear daily— the same one that broke when Ao’nung pushed you.
You feel your eyes water, heart pounding in your chest as you stare at Neteyam with adoration in your eyes. He fixed it for you and it looked better than it had before.
“I think you must’ve forgotten some of the pieces in the sand so I collected new shells. I’m sorry it’s not as good as it was before” He apologises shyly as he avoids your eyes, his hands still holding out the necklace.
“I love it, thank you Nete” You throw your arms around him and pull him into you. He feels so warm, the heat emanating from his skin spreading onto your own. You pull away feeling an urge grow inside of you, one that was impulsive and made you do something you probably shouldn’t have.
You press your lips against his— the feeling of you causes him to jolt suddenly but he relaxes into the kiss almost immediately, his hands moving into place on your body.
“I see you” Neteyam almost whispers when you pull away from him, his words causing your heart to pound faster— a smile growing on your face.
“I see you”
You leave separately, Neteyam offers to hang back so you can get home sooner and he can watch you to make sure you make it safely. You can barely contain the smile that’s on your face as you make your way back to the marui, your fingers caressing the necklace that sits on your chest as Neteyam runs your thoughts.
Days pass and you grow even closer to Neteyam, barely hiding the fact the two of you are more than just friends. Ever since you kissed, you two have been more touchy-- constantly holding hands, stealing kisses and almost exposing your secret to the others. You are inseparable. It's a fact that you love and one that Ao'nung is growing to hate more as the days pass. You don't notice the way Tonowari's son scowls at the sight of your side brushing against Neteyam's, at the thought of you seeing him at night-- the thought of Neteyam stealing you away from him.
"Brother, frown any longer and you'll get a sore head" Tsireya teases her brother as she nudges his Ilu with hers. The sound of her voice causes him to pull away from the sight before him-- which is you and Neteyam sitting together on the sand.
"Funny" He huffs, voice monotone as he tries his hardest not to let you disturb his thoughts more than you already have. Ever since he rejected you all those weeks ago, you seemed to have had the opposite effect on him. You plagued his mind, to the point where he's starting to dream of you. Unfortunately, Tsierya found out about his dreams after she overheard him mumbling your name in his sleep.
"She deserves to be happy. You had your chance and you broke her with it. Neteyam is good for her" Tsireya hums, the humour in her tone completely faltered. Ao'nung doesn't respond, he just absentmindedly nods at her words-- a sight that worry's his sister.
Ao'nung decides to approach you both when Tsireya finally leaves to go help their mother. She wouldn't be there to stop him from doing something stupid. Which is exactly what he does.
"Neteyam. Y/N" Ao'nung greets you both, the sound of his voice causes you to exhale before you turn away from Neteyam to look up at him. You give him a questioning look, unaware of why he was approaching you.
"My father wants you to dive and hunt with me” Ao’nung’s statement causes you to frown in slight disbelief. The request sounded strange to say the least, Tonowari knows Ao’nung is more than capable to dive on his own and he usually hunts with Rotxo and the others.
“Where’s Rotxo and Tsireya? They can’t join you?” You try to weasel your way out of having to join him.
“My father asked for you specifically. You shouldn’t defy the chief’s orders” Ao’nung tuts, a sly smirk on his face as he watches a slightly irritated look grow on your face.
“Okay but Neteyam should join. He’s good at hunting” You say, offering a smile to Neteyam who gives you a knowing look. He knows what you’re trying to do and he gives you a slight shake of his head before he agrees.
“I’m free, I could use the extra lessons” Neteyam moves to stand but Ao’nung shakes his head.
“No, Tsireya wants you. She’s teaching Lo’ak a few things by the Marui— they’re important” Ao’nung finalises as he nods his head toward the marui. Neteyam looks as though he doesn’t fully believe him but he gives you an apologetic smile anyway before standing.
“I’ll see you later” He says to you before he walks off, giving you one last glance before he disappears into the far distance. You huff as you look back at Ao’nung who waits for you to stand.
It’s awkward. The silence that fills the space between you both as you swim is so heavy but you can’t help it. Swimming with the boy who rejected and embarrassed you was the last thing you expected to be doing today. He can’t blame you for feeling uncomfortable but you can tell he’s trying.
We should go in there
He signs to you beneath the water, motioning to the small cave with an air pocket. You give him a slight nod before following after him, finally heaving in a breath once you’ve entered the cave. He wades across from you as you both take a few breaths, the silence eating you alive but you try not to seem too bothered by it.
“Uh— how has your day been?” Ao’nung questions you, his tone slightly awkward. You let out a cough before you answer.
“Okay, I guess. Yours?”
“Could be better” He answers coolly, sounding more like himself than he has been recently.
It goes quiet again, the atmosphere almost suffocating as you as you avoid Ao’nung’s eyes. You feel his gaze burn on the side of your face— the feeling causing you to fiddle with your fingers beneath the water. You hear him hum before gently moving closer to you, his movement causing ripples in the water. He brushes a lock of your hair behind your ear, his fingers brushing against your skin.
“You should braid more of your hair. Your curls get in the way of your face” His eyes linger on your face longer than you want him to so you keep your head turned. You choose not to question his random act, he had never touched you so gently— at all in fact, besides the time he pushed you into the sand.
“We should go hunting. Your dad will scold us if we return with nothing” You change the subject before you swim out of the cave— you don’t wait for him before you swim out to the usual hunting area.
You notice Ao’nung a lot more. After your random diving trip, he seemed to be everywhere you turned. No matter what part of the village you found yourself in, Ao’nung was never far away. You’re swimming with Neteyam on your ilus, Ao’nung sits on his own behind you. You’re weaving on the shore and Ao’nung is somehow kicking around on the sand near you. Even during trainings with the Sully’s he’s been acting weird.
“Teyam. It’s this way” You gently guide Neteyam as he works on his signing. He’s been getting better at communicating under water, something you’ve been tutoring him on during your late night hang outs. Besides the fact it’s extra time you get to spend with him uninterrupted, you’ve been using it to teach him how to sign.
“Sorry, I need to keep practicing”
“It’s okay, you’re doing well” You giggle, the sight of you guiding his hands causes Ao’nung to tense up— jealousy surging through him as you smile at Neteyam. Rotxo nudges his side, barely pulling away Ao’nung’s attention.
“Y/N, can you braid my hair? It’s loose” Ao’nung huffs, cutting Rotxo off mid sentence as he gains your attention. You look away from Neteyam toward the chief’s son, his hair already waiting in front of him.
“Uh— okay” You say before reluctantly moving toward Ao’nung’s side of the circle and fixing his long braid for him. He likes the feeling of your fingers gently weaving through his hair. He savours the way you kneel behind him, your skin just grazing his as you quickly redo his braid for him.
“What was that about?” Kiri questions you lowly when you move back to your side of the circle. You shrug unsure of what that was either, Ao’nung usually gets Tsireya to redo his braid but she had to skip this lesson so that’s probably why.
“So shameless, brother” Rotxo scoffs, teasing Ao’nung as they both watch you walk back to the marui after training finished. His friend clearly refers to the stunt Ao’nung pulled earlier with the braid. Ao’nung just rolls his eyes, shoving him gently as they follow behind you.
“You’ll have to choose a mate soon. This would be a good time to pick” Tsireya mutters to her brother as they approach the bonfire surrounded by Na’vi their age. Ao’nung just sighs as he follows after her, mentally preparing for a long night.
Ao’nung is disinterested in all the girls that approach him. He can barely hold conversations with them and makes excuses to cut it short so he can walk off and get some time alone. He wonders where you are, he hasn’t seen you since training earlier in the morning and he expected you would be here. The village held bonfire gatherings every so often for the youth— Ao’nung usually enjoyed them but he barely wanted to be here now. Especially since you were nowhere to be seen.
“But she’s a good hunter” Rotxo tries to reason with Ao’nung as he lists yet another potential mate to his friend. Ao’nung couldn’t care less, he just shrugs— his gaze constantly scanning over the crowd around him, hoping your face would finally appear.
“She talked about finally having an important title the whole time— she’s not genuine” Ao’nung tuts, he doesn’t hide the fact he’s grown bored of the conversation of finding a mate— he just wants to see you.
He’s almost given up hope and prepares to ditch this whole gathering all together until he finally sees you walking in the far distance. His eyes light up at the sight of you, his interest finally peaking until it’s shattered by the sight of Neteyam following closely beside you. He grunts to himself, annoyed that you hadn’t arrived alone. Kiri and Lo’ak trailed behind you both, waving out to Tsireya and Rotxo when they move closer.
You had barely acknowledged him, you just sat down beside Neteyam in the sand with the circle— your attention glued onto him solely as you listen to him talk. Ao’nung chews the inside of his cheek as he feels envy rush through him, wishing it had been him you were staring at so intently.
Another girl approaches Ao’nung, a fisherman’s daughter— someone Ao’nung hadn’t talked to since he was a young boy. This time he doesn’t find ways to chase her away, instead he invites her to join him— patting the spot beside him to mimic exactly how you and Neteyam were positioned.
“You have pretty eyes” Ao’nung compliments her, his voice louder than usual. It was shameless and pathetic but he had hoped you’d overheard him. You proved his plan a success by accidently eavesdropping in on their conversation. You can’t help but feel something about the way he talks to her so sweetly. This was a side of Ao’nung you never got to see, you had more of a chance of being attacked by a Tulkun than getting a compliment from him. It hurt.
Ao’nung hopes you see the way the girl’s hands caress his shoulder gently as they talk, or the way his fingers entwine with hers as they hold hands. It was an impulsive act and a shallow one seeing as the fact he didn’t even want to hold hands with her— he just hoped you would feel jealous the same way he had. You notice, of course you manage to play it off especially since you have Neteyam right beside you.
“Let’s go for a walk” You say to Neteyam before you both get up and walk away from the bonfire to find a more secluded spot. Ao’nung feels his mood drop the moment he sees you stand to leave. He pulls away from the girl— still pretending to listen to her talk but showing signs he was losing interest in her. You weren’t there so he didn’t care anymore.
Ao’nung doesn’t see you again, you didn’t return to the bonfire and even though he looked for you in the crowd as it was finishing— he still didn’t find you. He returned to his marui feeling worse than he did when he left. He went to sleep that night with you on his mind— knowing he would yet again dream of you.
He wakes randomly due to the ocean breeze that tickles at his skin. Ao’nung shivers slightly as he sits up, stretching as he looks over at his sleeping family before he stands. He’s not sure what time of the night it is but it’s still dark out. He decides to take a breather and gently moves to stand in the entry of their marui pod.
He narrows his eyes when he sees you in the far distance, hand in hand with Neteyam as you both walk away from your marui pods. Ao’nung feels his jaw tense, hands ball into fists as he watches you both run off. He remembered he promised you he wouldn’t tell anyone of your secret meetups with Neteyam— he respected that promise for weeks, but right now— Ao’nung doesn’t care about broken promises, he couldn’t stand watching you with Neteyam any longer. Ao’nung huffs before he leaves his marui and makes his way toward yours.

pain | ao’nung
Tumblr media
just some hc of what its like to be with ao’nung
Definitely mean at first— bullying practically
He’s like a ball of anger
You’d make fun of him and he couldn’t take it because you’d embarrass him
He’s a pain in your ass
He’s annoying 100% but you love that about him— you never grew tired of his presence
Sometimes he’ll take the jokes too far— but will apologize for being an ass
Horrible at expressing himself but trys for you nonetheless
Just a little clueless not like to where it’s concerning but enough to be cute
Asks his mother for advice on what to get you as gifts
Asks his dad how he treated is mother when they were teens— takes notes
He trys to remember every little thing you like and get you it as a surprise
Surprisingly makes you necklaces and little things of that nature
He also likes to show off— mostly his diving/hunting skills (honestly just wants you to be proud of him)
Protective asf but not toxic
Always touching you— like his knee is always touching yours or y’all’s hands are always touching in some way
Likes playing with your hair and LOVES when you play with his
He loves it when you bring him gifts— he cherishes them deeply
Sometimes his friends make fun of his collection of the things you’ve gotten him but he just tells them “you don’t understand a woman’s love skxawngs!”
Proud of you and your accomplishments, and brags to his friends about how amazing you are
“Did you see what my girlfriend did last week?” “yes ao’nung you’ve told us this for the 3rd time already!”
After meeting you he softened up tremendously— your ideological had rubbed off on him
Started being kind to the sully’s and stopped bullying them
You were his safe relaxing place after rough days
He loved being able to melt into your arms after a long day and listen to you softly sing to him as you traced his skin
a/n: it’s currently 1:34 am (when i wrote this) and i can’t stop thinking about fluff of rotxo— i will be writing something for him soon 😈🙏

Hi can I request number 18 with a female reader and Ao’nung please?
Tumblr media
“yn? yn, come on! It was just a joke!”
There is an obvious smile tinting his voice and it just makes you pick up the pace, stomping away in the direction of- well..You don’t actually know. Anywhere where that is out of reach of his voice godforsaken voice.
“I don’t want to speak to you, Ao’nung.” You say with finality. Will he just take a hint? Your thoughts are with poor Tsireya, how could she stay sane with him as a brother.
A hand grabs yours and you spin around, all kinds of anger scribbled on your face. You’re met with a cheeky smirk, half of Ao’nungs face glittering with the golden light that comes before eclipse.
“Try as you might, you can’t unkiss me.” His smile picks up at the corners. “Even with all your efforts.”
The cheek! You scoff in his face and snatch your wrist out of his grasp.
“Holding onto that memory quite hard are you? ‘fraid that’s the only kiss you’re going to get?”
It takes a minute, but soon enough an offended ‘hey!’ comes from behind you and a proud smile of your own emerges on your face.
(this was so short soz bae<3)

Outsiders - Neteyam
[ Neteyam x Metkayina!reader ]
Summary: Despite your uninterests in getting to know the Omatikaya guests, you’d somehow managed to capture the attention of the eldest brother and Neteyam messed up by doing the one thing your brother told him not to. Plus Lo’ak being the captain of the ship.
Warnings: none
Word Count: 2,033
Tumblr media
Just as expected, there were no particular signs of interest your siblings found in you when Omatikayas showed up on the shore, but you’d be lying if you said you weren’t curious upon their arrival.
“She will show up.” You faintly heard Rotxo quietly say to Ao’nung as you approached the commotion.
A glimpse of your father and mother speaking to an Olo'eyktan had you pushing through the crowd to get a better view. You could see your sister already examining the outsiders alongside your brother, being fairly kinder than he was.
“See,” remarked Rotxo as he spotted you making your way over to them.
Their banter over you was not uncommon. It never bothered you and you could care less with what they were whispering about now when you knew they had no ill intentions. Instead, you shifted your attention to the family standing before you and eyed each of them individually.
The littlest one was hiding behind her mother’s leg, the other girl looked exhausted and the younger boy had his eyes glancing at your sister too often to your annoyance.
You glanced at the eldest just as he did too, noticing you for the first time. The corners of his lips curved upwards to form a subtle smile in an attempt to seem friendly, which others might have missed but your brothers didn’t.
It wasn’t the smartest friendly attempt, considering how it only deepened the distaste of your brother into sneers and scowls.
“If he hasn’t already, he’s going to take interest in you,” whispered Ao’nung, though he didn’t seem pleased to know that. “You’re alluring. Stay away.”
“I won’t even do anything!”
“Exactly.”
“Shh,” interrupted Tsireya.
You shot a glare towards your brother in annoyance. He knew you wouldn’t even be interested in seeing them, let alone talking to them, yet somehow he was so sure that they’d approach you on their own
“They won’t even care, Ao’nung.” You had been so busy furiously thinking of arguments against your brother that the call of your name spooked you.
“They will teach you our ways,” your father said, earning immediate complaints from your brother whilst Tsireya obliged and wasted no time in leading the guests.
There was no doubt that your sister could handle them, and your siblings wouldn’t expect you to be interested in teaching them either. And they weren’t wrong. You’d prefer entertaining the kids running around the sand than guiding them.
“Where’s your other sister?” asked Kiri when she noticed your absence.
Neteyam hung back with Lo’ak as their parents busied themselves gazing at the village. The place still felt foreign to them, and even more so when they knew they’d be staying here.
“Doing something else. She’s not used to outsiders.” Tsireya did not stop to reply, the words coming off her tongue as if she had practiced it a thousand times.
Lo’ak raised his brows at the mention of another sister. He was too caught up fuming at Rotxo and Ao’nung to even notice you, but he doubted any of them were used to outsiders either.
“The quiet one.” Neteyam replied to his unspoken question. “The interesting one.”
“Go anywhere near her and we’ll tie you up with your baby tail.”
“Relax, she’s all yours.” Neteyam held his hands up in defense. He didn’t understand why they were getting so defensive over you although he barely even looked your way. Lo’ak was ogling at Tsireya and they didn’t seem too bothered.
Something was off about you, especially when you’d so rarely make yourself visible to any of them for days. He would’ve expected the daughter of the Olo'eyktan to be difficult to miss, especially when they all expected you to help teach them the Metkayina ways. And to be truthful, you just enjoyed doing your own thing that does not involve the outsiders.
“Father’s expecting all of us to join them.” Your annoyance was clearly visible. You weren’t even needed. They could handle this on their own without you, and your father knew that.
“Fine.”
-
You left them alone for two minutes and somehow they were already taunting each other when you came back. Your sister was called to help mother, much to your dismay, and you were putting back the saddles of the ilu.
“Lo’ak,” you heard Neteyam warn as you returned to the group behind Ao’nung, giving some distance.
When Lo’ak approached and flexed his fingers around, you knew what was coming before the punch actually landed on your brother’s face.
“Rotxo, stop!” you yelled, pulling him back by his hand. He shook you off easily, dismissing your warnings.
You looked to Neteyam who sighed, as if he’d witness this too many times. The older brother easily beat up Ao’nung and his friends in Lo’ak’s defense, scolding Lo’ak afterwards.
“Come on,” Ao’nung waited expectantly for you to follow them. He sensed your hesitance and saw the way your eyes roamed back and forth between them and the Omatikayas, and finally decided to leave without you.
“In my defense, you got to show off in front of her,” said Lo’ak groggily, nodding to you.
“Excuse my brother and his unrefined mouth.” Neteyam received a weak punch for that and the tiniest smile from you. He didn’t comprehend why, but Neteyam smiled at your amusement and from then, the annoyance you felt from having to teach them disappeared. Just slightly.
“Do I have to face dad?”
“Yes. Until then keep out of trouble. I mean it Lo’ak.”
It was safe to say Neteyam was impressed that his brother managed to not utter a single provoking word until he had to face their father.
“Hey.” Neteyam spun to the sound of your voice. It was nearly sundown and you were standing outside his room. “Sorry about my brother and his friends. I can still teach you how to control your breathing if you’d like.”
The mindful part of him knew he should go find his brother who hadn’t been visible for a long while, but the selfish part of him allowed his interests to take over. And this time, he allowed something for himself for once. Besides, Lo’ak should stay out of trouble after his last encounter with dad.
“Yeah. Sure.”
You nodded towards the shore and Neteyam jumped off his marui to follow you. It took great effort to avoid bumping into any of the children running around and splashing water.
“The secret to increasing your lungs’ limit is to slow your breathing and allow them to slowly adapt,” you said, pushing him back by the chest with both hands so that he sat down.
“Breathe from here.” You were only showing him parts of his chest and abdomen, but he couldn’t help the increasing pace of his heart as your hands felt around his chest. His eyes locked on your face the entire time in an attempt to focus on what you were saying, but the words that came out from your mouth sounded foreign to his brain.
“Your heart is beating really fast.” You frowned. “Slow down.”
Neteyam nodded, but when you felt his heart keep its frantic pace, you sighed and removed your hands from his chest.
“We’ll try this again tomorrow with my sister.”
-
Neteyam did the one thing Ao’nung told him not to do. He found himself coming up with excuses to see you and he was just about subtle enough that even Tuk noticed.
“I just made peace. This time I think you’re going to be the one to mess things up.”
“I’m not doing anything.” They both knew it was a lie and Neteyam was fully aware of that.
“Can you show the way to our marui? They all look the same,” Lo’ak mockingly mimicked the conversation he overheard between you and his brother yesterday. Lo’ak was basking in his enjoyment.
It was something unlikely of Neteyam and something expected of Lo’ak, which made the whole situation even more amusing to the younger brother.
“Ow.” Lo’ak swatted away the hand that hit him in the back of his head.
“You’re being annoying. Stop.”
“Stop being a wuss and make a move. It’s her birthday.” The look Neteyam gave was out of pure disbelief.
“I’m not you who falls in love with every pretty girl you see.”
“I do not do that.”
“Yes you do. Now go annoy someone else. I’m going to see if mom found our gift.” Neteyam pushed the weight of Lo’ak’s arm away from his shoulder, distancing himself before walking the other direction.
“Actually, you already gave her one.” The words from his brother’s mouth caused Neteyam to freeze in place and turn his head to look at him.
“What?”
“You gave her a pretty sea bouquet with a sweet little note.” If he could, Neteyam would tear the smug look off of his brother’s face.
“Kurkung.” Asshole. “What did the note say?”
“You’re going to have to ask her yourself. She actually shows up when you’re around.”
Happy birthday, tanhì
- Neteyam
You somehow doubted that this was actually from Neteyam. He didn’t seem like the type to show romantic gestures to someone he met only a few weeks ago. You were surprised that he was even interested in you at all and it had you flushing like an idiot.
“What’s got you so smiley?” asked Rotxo, snatching the note from your hand before you could reply.
“Hey!”
“That bastard. I thought mom got you that.” Your brother gestured to the bouquet with a glare. You had no idea why your brother and his friends were so against you and Neteyam. It wasn’t like either of you showed any interest in each other. Well, not until now.
“Lay off, Rotxo. It’s her birthday,” you heard Ao’nung’s voice before he entered the marui and stole the note from Rotxo’s hands. Your brother’s hand ruffled your hair in a way he knew you hated. “Happy birthday, hì’i kxetse.”
Happy birthday, small tail.
You shoved his hand away in annoyance, the glare you sent looking more playful than menacing. The pushes turned into fights and a full race to the waters.
“Guys-“ Rotxo never got to finish what he was saying since the two of you were already running through the poor villagers that minded their own business, occasionally bumping into some of them.
Ao’nung was grinning at his expected victory when you tackled him from behind. The rest of the way was filled with tripping, pulling, and your attempts at kicking him away from you.
You were nearly there. Aonung would often beat you most of the time, but on lucky days, you claimed the victory.
“Woah!” Before you could stop yourself, you slammed into Neteyam, knocking the both of you over to the waters.
Water filled your lungs quicker than you could comprehend and it seemed like Neteyam did the same since he was coughing a fit once the two of you resurfaced.
“Sorry,” you mumbled an apology in between coughs.
“Looks like lover boy helped you win, little sis.” Ao’nung appeared from behind you. Your brother did nothing, but you hit him on his forehead - which felt like a weak nudge to him - for his mere existence. “I’m gonna fetch Rotxo. I’m still keeping my eye on you, forest boy.”
Once Ao’nung was out of earshot you were quick to approach him and apologize for your brother’s hostility. “Sorry for him. I liked your gift, though. It was lovely.”
Neteyam knew it wasn’t really his gift, but he couldn’t help but play along. Lo’ak was never going to let this go and he knew it. He was “forever in Lo’ak’s debt”.
“It’s alright. Happy birthday again.”
You smiled at Neteyam, leaning in to put a hand on his jaw and he hoped you couldn’t feel the speed of his heartbeat increasing as you gave a peck to his cheek. It was supposed to be him, yet you were the one whose face flushed and quickly swam away to find your ilu.
Lo’ak just found the entire thing amusing.
He raised a brow suggestively as Neteyam spotted him standing by the shoreline, blowing a kiss his way, which was responded with water splashed to his face.
“You’re welcome.”

I Love You, I Trust You, I See You
When people thought of the Sully family many thought of your siblings. They thought of Lo’ak who was always a troublemaker, causing chaos everywhere he went. They thought of Kiri who seemed so in tune with her surroundings that she might as well be Eywa herself. They thought of Tuk who was the youngest, still enamored by everyday life. They thought of Neteyam, a strong leader who would someday take on the role of Olo’eyktan after your father.
They never thought of you.
You who always seemed to be in your own little world. You who never had any friends. You who never talked. You who always seemed so attentive to the world around you, yet had no desire to join it.
When you were born after your twin Neteyam, a spike of fear had run through everyone in the room when you began to cry, but no sound came out. They feared you may not be breathing right, you may need your airways cleared. They feared something was wrong, and that was true.
When your parents or siblings thought about your family, they thought about you. They thought about how funny you were, always cracking jokes when there was a chance. They thought about how kind you were, taking a moment to check on everyone daily. They thought about how different you were than most.
They thought about you. You who couldn’t hear.
You always seemed to be in your own world, and that drew many away from you, they didn’t want to be friends with someone who they didn’t think was paying attention to them, and to be fair you weren’t paying attention to people most of the time. You preferred to direct your attention to the world around you, always keeping an eye out as you couldn’t hear danger coming.
When you had been caught by Quaritch and his men you had panicked, more than everyone else at least. You didn’t know what was going on, you didn’t know what they were saying, your lip reading was not dependable, and definitely not in english.
When your siblings arms were bound you couldn’t keep yourself calm, now you had no way of communicating, they couldn’t translate for you. Tears streamed down your face, eyes closed as tight as possible to try to calm yourself by blocking out the outside world.
When you felt your captor’s grip on your release your eyes shot open, looking around at the damage around you, multiple avatars dead on the ground. Then you ran, you ran faster than ever before in the first direction you saw.
You ran and ran, eyes trained on everything around you, and when you ran into someone and they grabbed you again it was like a shock. You let out a scream, the first noise anyone had ever heard you make. A noise nobody was aware you could make.
You turned to dead weight in an attempt to get out of their grasp, panic coursing through you again as your eyes couldn’t come into focus. However, the person dropped to the ground with you, pulling your face towards them and holding it still as you tried to thrash. Then they blew air into your face, and you realized you were safe.
When you were younger you would throw temper tantrums, as children do, where you would close your eyes to refuse to listen to your parents. Not being able to see them meant no sign language, which meant no having to listen to them. However your father found one thing always worked, blowing air on your face. Your eyes would shoot open, highly offended with your mouth dropped open, before you would sign at him, “Your breath is gross.” in retaliation.
You had never been more relieved for your dad’s stupid way of getting you to listen. Your eyes finally came into focus and you calmed down seeing his face, but that calm quickly turned into crying, sobbing. You couldn’t help but let out all of the pent up emotion inside of you, but eventually you calmed down and were able to stand back up, staggering your way home with the rest of your family.
Some time later when your parents had been arguing in your family kelku you hadn’t been paying attention as your siblings were, all huddled against the wall. You had been lost in your own world once again, not wanting to know what was being said as you were still processing what had happened earlier. You didn’t need anything on top of that as you feared it would make your careful stack of emotions you had constructed come tumbling down.
They had come tumbling down though as your parents announced you were moving, leaving. Leaving everything you had ever known, your home, your grandmother, the forest you loved so much. You couldn’t help it as you cried again, being held by your mother this time.
However as you thought about it you weren’t that sad. You had always liked the water, everyone not having to hear underwater made you feel more included, more like you belonged, and you had heard the Metkayina used sign language. Maybe this would be a chance to make friends for the first time in your life. Maybe you would be able to talk to people for once, nobody at home taking the time to learn American Sign Language, as your father had called it, like your family had.
One thing you hadn't taken into account was that they used a different version of sign language, but that had become very apparent when you first jumped into the water with Tsireya, Ao’nung, and Rotxo. They used signs you had never seen before, ones you didn’t recognize. You couldn’t help but feel a little beaten down at dinner, staying quieter than usual, not signing as much.
Afterwards your dad had asked you to step outside, waving a hand towards you as he exited the marui.
He sat down on the pathway, and you knew he expected you to join him, so you did. You sat next to him with your feet dangling in the water, looking out towards the horizon, refusing to look at him so you didn't have to have a conversation.
That didn’t last long though as he poked you in the arm, causing you to look at him offended, mouth open and eyebrows raised. He took this as his chance to speak, “You okay, kid?” He signed.
You sighed deeply, fidgeting with your hands before signing, “I’m okay, dad.”
You could tell he didn’t believe you, lips pressed together in a thin line and eyebrows furrowed, “You’re less talkative. What’s wrong?” He signed, proving he didn’t think you were telling the truth.
A frown came to your face, feeling like it was permanently there after the past few days or so, but you continued, “I’m disappointed.”
He raised his eyebrows, surprise and confusion on his face, “About what?”
You looked away from his face, instead choosing to watch his hands, you didn’t want to see the pity on his face, “We don’t speak the same language. I can’t communicate. Everyone else can at least talk to each other.”
His face softened, but you didn’t see it, “It’ll be okay. You’re a fast learner, so you will learn their language quickly, then you can make friends. If anyone actually wants to be your friend.” He meant it playfully, and you saw him laugh, so jammed your elbow in his ribs.
Then the conversation was over, your mom poking her head out of the doorway and saying something to your dad. He just stood up and gave you a look like he was asking, “You good?” and you nodded, “Yes.” back in return.
After your father’s words of encouragement you decided to work harder, learn faster, determined to be able to communicate with the people around you, and a few weeks later you were excelling whereas your siblings were still struggling. They were caught up on the differences of Metkayina sign language versus ASL but you had grasped that there weren’t differences, or similarities, and you would just be learning from scratch.
Even though you were doing well at it, working your way towards being fluent, you were worried about talking to the people, mostly because of one person in particular, Ao’nung. It was as if Ao'nung was determined to ruin your siblings' lives, and yours, but you didn’t know that.
You had seen Ao’nung’s attempts to cause hell for your siblings, nagging at them, laughing at them, and even trying to start fights, with Lo’ak in particular. Him messing with your siblings made you frustrated, but you weren’t aware of the taunts meant to make you upset, and laughing that was meant to make you feel like a target coming towards you from a distance.
The bullying towards your siblings had become more and more frustrating and you had begun showing your anger at home, being rougher with things than usual, and not wanting to go outside of the shared family marui.
It had been peaceful while you and your mom had been working on dinner, but she noticed you seemed to be far off, handling the food with rougher hands, “Are you okay, (Y/n).” Neytiri signed as you placed another fish over the fire.
You rolled your eyes at her, upset she was even insinuating something was wrong. In reality there was, but you didn’t want to admit that, “Yes mama, I’m fine.”
“Are you sure?” She had asked back, concern on her face as she looked at you closely.
You signed, “Yes.” Trying to end the conversation, but you knew she would just keep pushing.
You saw your mom think for a moment, her face scrunching up in concentration, “Well I am not.”
You frowned more, once again feeling like it had always been there since you left the forest, “Not what?”
She was frowning too now, “I’m not sure you’re fine. I see you isolating yourself. Even from me and your father.” She grabbed your hands, squeezing them gently to show her love in a little way.
Tears welled in your eyes, frustrated tears, tears that came because with all the stress recently they were the only way your brain knew how to process, to cope.
You pulled your hands from hers to wipe at them, “I’m sorry.” was all you could say.
She wiped the tears falling down your face before saying, “Why?”
You sniffled, running your hands down your face before signing, “I see Lo’ak, Kiri, and Neteyam being picked on, and there is nothing I can do. I can’t stand up to the bullies. I can’t say anything.”
“Okay, well soon you will be able to say something. You are learning their sign language, yes? I’ve heard from your siblings you are out working them.” She smiled at you and you could really see how proud of you she was.
You couldn’t help but crack a little smile although tears still threatened to fall, “Yes, mama. I’m getting better, but I’m worried it will be too late though.”
“I’m sure you will do your best, my ‘ite.” She thought for a second, “Why don’t you go try to talk to these kids tomorrow?”
You sighed, you didn’t want to, but you knew your mom would nag you until you agreed, “Okay. Love you.”
She smiled lovingly at you, “Love you too.” before pulling you into a hug.
When tomorrow came you didn’t even want to leave your marui, but you found the strength to do so. You did some of the breathing exercises Tsireya had taught you to try to calm your nerves, and they worked for the most part, steadying you and clearing your head.
However as soon as you stepped outside your marui you regretted it, not wanting to do what you had promised to your mother, but you knew you had to eventually. Eventually, which meant you could fool around as long as you wanted beforehand, and so you decided to settle down for a quick nap on the beach.
When you laid down and closed your eyes you quickly and easily fell asleep. You were still tired from last night when you struggled to sleep from your anxious thoughts.
When the Sullys moved to Awa’atlu Ao’nung thought they were weird, knew they were weird. He took a particular hatred towards the older Sully kids, Neteyam was the perfect little follower, Lo’ak was constantly in trouble, Kiri was always off in her own world, and you. Just you. You seemed to always ignore him and never talk, but what he didn’t know was that it's because you couldn’t hear him.
Ao’nung tried to not let anything get to him, especially when it came to people he didn’t like, like the Sullys, but for some reason you, (Y/n) Sully, had peeved him more than anyone or anything else. He had grown tired of you ignoring him when he shouted or laughed at you, like you didn’t even notice he was there, tired of you flat out avoiding him sometimes as you scurried away when he tried to approach you.
Of course he knew why, he had the same intentions to bully you and make you feel unwanted in Awa’atlu as your siblings. Of course you didn’t want this so you spent most of your time avoiding him, but for some reason instead of him not caring about it, it made him want to get under your skin even more.
When the sun rose today he decided today was the day to act. Today he would confront you head on, face to face. He would make you notice him, and he would make you feel awful in the process. So he gathered his friends, his goons, and they set off to find you.
They first checked with Tsireya who was with the rest of your siblings, but you were nowhere to be found, they all insisted they hadn’t seen you. Then they combed the beach, going from one end to the other, and on the far end they found you peacefully asleep on the soft sand.
He couldn’t help but notice how cute you looked asleep and peaceful, but he quickly shook it off, shouting at you, “Wake up, freak!”
He was targeting your extra finger and the hair above your eyebrows, like he had your siblings because he knew that got to them, and hoped it would do the same to you.
When you didn’t stir he tried shouting again, assuming you were awake, but trying to act asleep to avoid him, “What is wrong with you? Do you not care or are you stupid avoiding me?”
His friends laughed at you when you still didn’t move, eyes not cracking open and your breathing staying the same, so he took the next step, trying something physical. He kicked sand up and over you and finally you stirred, sitting straight up and looking around for the source of the sand, and when you saw him your heart dropped, a lump forming in your throat.
“There we go, now you are paying attention.” He snickered.
You tried to read his lips, but he spoke too fast, and you just stayed silent. You cocked your head to the side, eyebrows drawn together in a look of confusion.
You hesitated for a second, but were about to sign something when he spoke again. “Do you not speak? A silent freak, interesting.” You still didn’t understand exactly what he was saying, but his friends all laughed at you, and although you couldn’t hear it it made you feel small.
“I’m sorry. I can not hear you.” You signed, using Metkayina sign language this time.
He scoffed, “I do not believe that. I think you just don’t want us to bother you, but here we are.” He laughed in your face.
“Please use your hands.” You tried to communicate, but they just wouldn’t listen to you.
“No.” He sneered, this you understood, one single word.
Your mouth dropped open, offense written all over it. You knew he was disrespectful, didn’t care about others feelings, but you would make him care, “I can not hear. I am deaf.”
He was about to retort against you again, but when he had been searching for you earlier that day Neteyam knew he meant trouble, so when he found you he stayed in the shadows, watching, but now Ao’nung had taken it too far.
He surged forwards, anger consuming him, “Step off bro. She can’t hear you.”
“Yeah that is what she just said.” He rolled his eyes, “I do not care though, it is better if she can not hear me. Means I can make fun of her without her knowing.” He signed the last part so you could understand.
You shrunk back, standing to hide behind Neteyam. You tugged on his arm, “It’s okay.” You signed.
“It’s not okay, (Y/n).” He rubbed a hand down his face, turning to Ao’nung, “You need to leave her alone.”
“Whatever.” Ao’nung scoffed before turning and walking away.
Now he knew why you seemed to ignore him, you just didn’t know he was talking to you. You were probably avoiding him because you didn’t know their sign language yet. He felt bad for some reason. He usually wouldn’t feel bad about his bullying but with you it felt different now knowing this.
He couldn’t show his feelings though, worried about his little group making fun of him, but he slowly started to back off of you, and your siblings some as well. Whenever one of his “friends” would ask why, he would reply something like “We can not make fun of a cripple.” and roll his eyes, still a jab at you, but less so.
At some point you became all that consumed his thoughts, on his mind at all times, and whenever he would see you with his sister, or your siblings, he would feel the need to insert himself into the conversation, but he always refrained. He wanted to talk to you, to apologize, but he feared judgment from his “friends” who are just as nasty as he was.
Eventually he couldn’t hold it in anymore, heading to your marui to ask to talk with you, in the way you would understand. When he knocked on the doorway of the family home Lo’ak was the first to notice him, glaring at him and nudging Neteyam in the side, directing his attention towards Ao’nung.
Neteyam stood before either of his parents even noticed the boy in the doorway, stalking over to him and dragging him down the pathway so they could talk, “What do you want?” He hissed out.
Ao’nung cleared his throat, but the words still came out small, nervous, “I came to apologize to (Y/n)...”
“No.” Was all Neteyam said before turning away and starting to walk back into the Sully family’s home.
Ao’nung grabbed his arm before he got too far away, “Please. Please let me talk to her.” He begged, something he didn’t like to do, but it was necessary.
Neteyam sighed, “Fine, but if you do anything I will chop your head off myself.” He threatened the boy, “I’ll go get her.”
It wasn’t long before you stepped out of the marui, a frown on your face and hands he could see shaking, “What do you want?” You signed, hands shaking with nerves.
“I came to say sorry.” He started off, “I’m sorry for bullying you, and your siblings. I promise I won’t do it any more.”
“And?” You asked, knowing there was more.
He looked nervous now, hands shaking as he signed, “I wanted to extend the offer of friendship.”
You looked shocked now, “You want to be friends with me?”
He nodded his head, smiling shyly, “Yes. Absolutely.”
You smiled this time, relieved he would be leaving your siblings alone, and excited to learn more about him, about what he was really like under the bad boy shell, “Okay, friend.”
He just nodded at you, “I have to go now. See you at lessons with Tsireya tomorrow?”
“Of course.” You responded.
When you entered the marui again everyone's eyes were on you, a light blush on your face, “I made a friend.” You smiled.
You could see your parents cheering and clapping for you, but your siblings' faces were unsure, you would have to reassure them later but for now you were all having a family night, playing games and handing out things you had made for each other with the new resources you were getting used to using. They were clunky and awkward, but you would get better, it reminded you of something, of someone.
As days passed into weeks you and Ao’nung had grown closer, him pretty much taking over your lessons, stealing you away from Tsireya who was sad to see you go, but happy for her brother for making a friend, a real friend, not one of his goons that tended to hover around him at all times. You had seemingly broken down his bad boy aesthetic and his goons had since left him, moving onto another leader to follow, still as nasty as ever.
You were grateful for him letting his walls down around you, allowing you to see him, and soon you did. You saw him as more than you ever had before. You couldn’t help but think about courting him, of trading little handmade gifts, and sharing little intimate moments of happiness throughout the day.
It seemed as if he wanted the same as he began bringing you gifts, starting as a little armband he made from you out of hard to find shells he had spent many hours trying to find, then it moved onto necklaces and bracelets. Each was more intricate than the last.
When this started you began to bring him things too, poorly made things because using dried seaweed and palm leaves were different from the materials of the jungle, but you managed. Even though they weren’t the best quality he proudly wore them, gladly accepting every gift you would give.
Everyone had noticed by now, the traded jewelry, the touches that lingered a little too long, and the longing looks when you weren’t together. What baffled people most however was not Ao’nung’s seemingly peaceful side coming out, but the fact that neither of you had officially come out and asked if you were courting.
You were courting, you both knew that, but Ao’nung wanted to put it into words, he wanted to make it official, but he felt the need to fix a couple things first, to get a couple blessings.
So he went to the person he thought would be easiest first, your mom. She had seen you two from afar and already had talked to you about it, encouraging you to pursue him and get what you wanted. She had said she was not Tsahík, but Eywa had shown her signs. So when Ao’nung asked she immediately gave him her blessing, knowing this was something not just he wanted, but something you wanted too.
Then he went to your dad. He was a fierce warrior who commanded respect, and Ao’nung tried his best to be respectful, carefully wording his proposal of courting his daughter. Of course Jake had been hesitant at first, but eventually he caved after Ao’nung had mentioned he already had Neytiri’s blessing.
Finally he went to Neteyam, your twin brother, your best friend since birth. Neteyam was adamantly against it, wanting nothing to do with Ao’nung, and wanting his sister to have nothing to do with him either. He was still on the edge of forgiving Ao’nung, swaying over a cliff where falling meant forgiving Ao’nung for his wrong doings, and when Ao’nung explained his love for you, his intentions to never hurt you and treat you with the respect you deserve Neteyam fell over the cliff, giving the Metkayina boy his blessing.
Once he had gotten their blessings he had invited you to the beach where he had first intentionally seeked you out. You were hesitant to go back there with him, but you gave in, trusting him wholeheartedly.
You love him. You trust him. You see him.
When you got there he pulled you to sit down with him, you both facing each other, and he signed, letting his heart out, letting his feelings show, “I am sorry for any times I have hurt you. I was an ass and a fool, and I wish I had never caused you upset or harm. I am sorry for bullying your siblings too, they did not deserve it, but I was scared by the new people and what they would bring. I now see I should have helped like my sister. I should have been making you feel at home here, not doing the opposite.”
“It’s okay. We’re past that.” You reassured him.
He nodded, continuing, “Now I see how special you are. I see how much you’ve changed me and my views on life. I am grateful for the person you have shaped me into. I am grateful I got the chance to make it up to you. I want to court you. Officially.”
You felt your heart swell, butterflies in your stomach, and you were sure it was showing on your face, “I would love that.”
You moved your hands carefully to cup his face, holding it there as you looked into his eyes, hoping he understood how grateful you were for him too, then you pulled him in, lips brushing against each other before they fully made contact. It was magical, unlike anything you had felt before, and you were happy it was him making you feel this way. So happy, so loved.
When you pulled apart he smiled widely at you, grabbing your hands and giving them a gentle but tight squeeze before using them to say, “I see you. I see you.”
You sign your thoughts from earlier, “I love you, I trust you, I see you.”
He doesn’t say anything else, just smiles, and pulls you back in for another kiss, and you feel at peace. You know he is yours, and you are his. You know he will never leave you, and you will never leave him. You know he loves you, and you love him. You know he sees you, and you see him.

Pairing: Tsu'tey x Fem!Omatikaya! Reader,
Word count: 1917
Synopsis: Tsu'tey returning from a trip and being met with an unexpected request
[Previous] // [Next]
Tsu’tey had been away from the clan for some days he looked around as families gathered greeting their missing family members he went off in Search of his mate he found her by the riverbank washing
"You have been avoiding me,
Ma Yawne ." Tsu'tey sounded softer than usual, as he stood behind Skyler.
She smiled hearing his voice
"Tsu'tey you're back! " she quickly stopped her work rushing towards him , she nuzzled him. She had missed him after not seeing him for weeks he had been gone to meet with another clan .
He leaned his head back and closed his eyes against her soft touches, his face warming as he felt her presence. His arms encircled her, and he let out a warm breath. "It has been too long." Tsu'Tey's voice was full of emotion, as he took in the scent of her skin, and their closeness.
"How was the meeting ?" She asked, "It went fine ." Tsu'Tey paused for a moment, before he lifted his head to look down at her, his expression softening as he took in her features.
"Did you miss me?" " no it was actually so calm and i didn't wake up because of snoring or being crushed under your body " she teased him. He smirked at her bold words. "Watch your tongue, my wife." Tsu'Tey voice was playful as his brows lowered, and his stare became more intense.
"Or what?" she taunted she playfully shoved at his chest His eyes narrowed, and his fingers tightened on her shoulders as he leaned over in a mock threat. "I will throw you over my shoulder," Tsu'Tey replied, not backing down from her playful taunts. "Maybe I can add a new scare to your collection " she nipped at his neck.
He didn't flinch, even as her teeth flashed. There was no escaping his grip on her, and he pulled her into an embrace.
"You are quite the feisty thing, aren't you?" The navi whispered as his voice became tender. His eyes roamed over her features.
She kissed from his neck up his jaw
Tsu'Tey closed his eyes and tilted his head back, as he felt the sensations of her lips against his skin.
He was lost in the pleasure of her touch that he let out an involuntary purr, and he pressed himself closer against her. She giggled hearing the large warriors purr. Tsu'Tey broke off the kiss, and looked up at her with an amused
expression. "Perhaps I've been too gentle with you," *he said, his voice dripping with sensual innuendo.
His hands wandered over her shoulders, as he smirked teasingly. She pulled him over to a secluded area of the lake. Tsu'Tey allowed himself to be swept into her embrace. His arms wrapped around her back, as he rested his head against her, before he noticed their location.
"Skyler...what are we doing?" The na'vi asked, as his gaze darted about. The area was deserted, and isolated.
"I don't think I can wait till we get home " Tsu’tey’s gaze widened as he heard her words. The navi was not one for rash decisions, and he was about to protest, but his protests died in his throat as she began moving her hands along his torso.
A sudden surge of desire ripped through the navi, and he let out a deep growl. She smirked hearing his growl, she looked up at him.
Tsu'Tey breathed heavily as his body responded to her touch, and he struggled to maintain his composure. Despite having already experienced this sensation multiple times, the effect of her hands on his skin was like a drug. The navi gripped her hips and pulled her close, his gaze locking on hers. "Easy my heart we have time" she cood kissing him gently. Tsu’tey calmed himself as she spoke, and he eased up on his hold on her.The na'vi could feel his body shaking from the effect of her touch and the need to mate.
He had never felt like this with any other female. He gently pushed her away from him, taking a breath to clear his head. "You are correct," he said slowly, with a hint of a growl in his voice.
She caressed him gently,His breath hitched as he felt her hands on his skin, and he clenched his fists to keep himself from dragging her down to the ground.
Tsu'Tey's expression twisted as he tried to control his mounting desire.
"Do you have any idea what you do to me?, it makes want to breed you, watch you grow with my child " The navi asked, through gritted teeth.
She gave him small pecks on the lips between kissing around his neck and throat
He grunted as he felt her lips on his neck. The pecks felt like daggers to him, and his body responded in turn. He had never expected her to be so passionate, and his body was on fire.
Tsu'Tey closed his eyes, trying to maintain the last of his control as her lips continued to move up and down his neck. She moved his hands onto her hips " please muntxatan , I want a baby of our own "
Tsu'Tey froze as she spoke, and he didn't even react as his hands found her hips. Every part of the navi's body felt as though it was on fire, but more so as her words entered his ears. Had she just said what he thought she had said? "You want a child... of ours?" He echoed her words carefully. She nodded " I want many babies"The notion of her wanting children made Tsu’Tey's body tighten with desire. He'd always wanted a large family, with at least four of five children.
He grunted as he felt the effects of her words. Tsu’Tey was more than eager to start their family right away. "You want many babies..." He repeated, his words laced with a growl this time.
She nuzzled at his throat The small gesture of affection pushed Tsu'Tey to the brink. His hands tightened around her hips, as he leaned over her, his expression filled with passion.
The na'vi pushed her body against a tree behind her and began kissing her roughly, grunting against her mouth as he parted her lips with his tongue. She let him , His kissing became more heated as he lost himself in her taste, and he pressed his body against hers. He needed to have her right now, and he began moving his hands along her waist, wanting to strip her down.
She let out little moans and gasps. His lips moved from her mouth to her neck, and he bit softly into her sensitive skin. “Ahh!” She cried softly. As he heard her gasp of pleasure, his grip tightened on her hips. He bit harder into her sensitive spot, and he began trailing kisses down to her collarbone.
_______________________________________
With satisfaction and relief, Tsu'Tey lay upon the ground with Skyler curled in his arms. The na'vi waspanting heavily as they had just had the most intense mating session in years. His heart was pounding loudly as sweat dripped from his brow. The na'vi felt as if he had run several miles, and he ran his hands down her body slowly, relishing in their closeness. She nuzzled into him " you were a complete beast my heart" she said smile in her voice. Tsu'Tey chuckled as she spoke, and he wrapped an arm around her. His body had never felt so relaxed, and his senses were still heightened as he registered her touch against him. "You brought it out of me..." He replied, his voice gentle and playful despite the raw passion he still felt. He leaned down and kissed the top of her nose.
She lay against him " I really did miss you”
Tsu'Tey smiled, and his grip on her tightened just a touch. It felt wonderful to be in her embrace. The na'vi had always enjoyed their time together, but it had not been the same when he had been gone for weeks with the others. "I missed you too..." He whispered softly, as his fingers caressed her skin. She sighed softly, Tsu'Tey rested his chin on her shoulder. Their breathing had settled down, and the sun was slowly beginning to set. He felt calmer now that his desire had finally been sated. The navi took in the scents of the forest and their intimate surroundings, feeling the effects of the mating session begin to fade.
She kissed him again, TsuTey had not expected her to kiss him again, and he jolted a little at her touch. He could feel his desire being awakened once more, despite his own judgement. His grip on her had slackened, and he leaned into her touch, despite himsel… She nuzzled him, Tsu'Tey's body tingled in response to her touch. The navi held back from pushing her to the ground and taking her again. He had grown older, but their desires still burned intensely.
His hand moved from her hip to her back, and he traced soft circles along her skin. He let out a small huff as he tried to hold back, and he squeezed her body against him. She rested against him "Do you think you can go again?"
She teased. His body tensed at her comment, as if she had jolted him awake. TsuTey chuckled as his gaze roamed over her body. "I think I can manage," he replied, with a playful smirk.

When your parents told you and your siblings that you were going to seek Uturu among the Metkayina, you were the only one that was excited to explore this new world.
Yes, you would miss the forest deeply since it's the only home you've known, but you wanted to know what Pandora had to offer besides the massive rainforest.
When you arrived at Awa'atlu, you couldn't believe that the whole clan had tattoos just like you. Back in the forest, you were the only na'vi to have such markings along your azure skin, thus to see a whole collection of na'vi with tattoos all over their bodies made you feel less of an outsider for once.
When Ao'nung first noticed the black markings that were intricately drawn on your back, he wondered why you had them when the other members of your family didn't.
However, your tattoos weren't the only thing that interested him...
The way you seem so connected with aquatic life, and your ability to successfully tame a Tsurak with barely any struggle or force. The way you just stepped into the water, and the Tsurak instantly succumbed to you baffled him. He's never seen anyone do anything like that before.
When he, Tsireya, and Rotxo first took you and your siblings swimming, you (and Kiri) were the only ones who didn't need to go up for air. You stayed underwater for almost the same duration as he could.
You’ve just started learning the way of water and you somehow have already perfected it.
Whenever he saw you walk around the village, carrying baskets full of either weaving materials or fruits you foraged from the jungle you always filled his ears with a beautiful hum of your favorite hometree song which always made him want to hear your true vocal abilities.
He was intrigued and interested in you, to say the least. You both have talked before, but both of you were always too caught up in presuming what the other person thought, so you both never confessed your feelings to each other yet.
You always wondered if his heart skipped a beat for you like yours did whenever you caught the slightest glimpse of him, or if he always felt nervous whenever talking to you. You wished you could know what he was thinking and how he truly felt.
Unbeknownst to you, you would get your answer sooner than you thought.
The sun has set and the darkness has been cast upon Awa'atlu. It was the middle of the night and the village was dead silent. Everyone was home sleeping peacefully, trying to rest up for the day to come except for Ao'nung.
He couldn't sleep, so he thought that taking a quiet walk along the beach would help his body relax and eventually grow drowsy.
As he felt the sand crunch in between his toes, all he could think about was you. He has been trying to gather up the courage to profess his love for you, but his nerves kept getting in the way and making him back out.
Upon beginning to get consumed by his thoughts, he heard a beautiful siren-like voice from a distance that made his ears perk up in suspicion.
Hearing the faint words, he began to recognize the song. It was the same song his mother sang whenever she grazed over the small shell totem on her songcord that contained a specific memory of her and his father.
The song Ao'nung recognized was a love song.
He began to follow the angelic tune, wanting to know who this incredible voice belonged to. As he walked to the end of the beach, the part that was extremely secluded, the voice became louder.
'I must be close.' He thought.
He bent one more corner and that's when he found the beholder of the voice.
You were dancing gracefully along the clear blue water, continuing to sing the love song that drew Ao'nung to you as if you were magnetic. As you glided along the water, multiple aquatic creatures began to swim around you, their bioluminescent glow making the water shine ever so beautifully.
He looked from behind the boulder. He was standing in the front, having a clear view of you dancing with a water-shaped figure.
'I wonder who that's supposed to be...' He continued observing you, wanting to know what was going to happen next.
As if you could read his mind, you turned to a different angle giving him a full view of the figure. At first, he couldn't interpret anything until he noticed the outline of a Metkayina physique, a curly braided bun, and the shape of what's supposed to be a talon necklace.
Once he put the full image together in his mind, his eyes widened. "Oh, my Eywa! That’s supposed to be me." He whispers in disbelief.
Ao'nung had so many questions at this point. How were you floating on water? Why were animals so attracted to you? And why were you dancing with a figurine of him?
You didn't even know Ao'nung was watching. You were so wrapped up in dancing and serenading the figurine Ao'nung you didn't even realize the real Ao'nung was standing right behind you.
"y/n!"
Hearing the voice you already knew who it belonged to which sent you into panic mode. Your voice became lodged in your throat, the figure dissolved into the water, the animals that were surrounding you swam away, and you... you were freaking out.
The panicky feeling spread through your body like wildfire. You couldn't believe Ao'nung saw you like this, in your true form. The one thing you didn't want him to see because you knew it would scare him off. And knowing that he saw you dancing with something that was a replica of him made you feel even more embarrassed.
The only thing you wanted to do was get yourself out of this awkward and embarrassing situation, therefore that's what you did. Your tattoos morphed into your set of wings and you began to flap them into the air, trying to gain enough wind to fly away to any place but here.
When Ao'nung saw your wings he was awestruck. He couldn't believe the sight before him. The small patterns of black that went along your see-through navy blue wings were a breathtaking sight in Ao'nung's eyes. With the way he gawked at you and your beauty, he didn't even realize you started flying away until he heard swooshes and felt big gusts of wind impacting his skin.
"y/n, wait! Don't go! I just wanted to talk!" He yelled out trying to get your attention, hoping you would come back, but it was too late. You were already searching for a place far from the village and him.
He couldn't just go back home as if he didn't see you, as if you didn't show your feelings for him right before his eyes, so he had to find you.
He went to the shore and called for his ilu. As soon as the ilu came to him, he immediately mounted it and began searching for you. He started by looking at the little nearby islands before going farther out.
He was determined to talk to you now more than ever. He was going to find you, even if he had to search all night.
To him, you were worth the manhunt.
After a while of flying, you found a small secluded spot. It was made of rocks and other items Eywa provided in nature. As you sat down on the rocky material all you could do was think about how your powers and abilities were outed and to make matters worse they were to Ao'nung.
The boy that filled your heart with warmth saw you with your guard down.
There were so many thoughts swarming around your mind you couldn't think about just one.
'What if he tells his parents?'
'Does he think I'm weird?'
'He's probably telling the whole clan what a freak I am.’
'If he did have feelings for me they've vanished now.’
As the waves crashed into the rocks and water splashed lightly against your skin, you distinguished a voice calling out for you.
Upon hearing your name, you turned around and made the figure of Ao'nung riding his ilu towards you.
'Why is he here?' You wondered as stood up while letting out your wings in an attempt to fly away again.
"Wait, y/n! I just want to talk to you please!" He pleaded, walking up to you in hope that you would stay and listen to him.
Seeing the genuineness in his features, you retracted your wings and slowly walked up to him. "What is it Ao'nung?" You asked in a defensive tone as you still didn't let all your guards down.
"I just- After you left I wanted to talk to you. You left so quickly that I didn't have a chance to say anything."
"Well, I already knew what you were going to say, so there wasn't any reason for me to stay."
"And what was it?" He asked in a curious tone, wondering what was going through your mind.
"That I'm weird for dancing across the water and having wings as if I'm an ikran. I know you probably think I'm a freak because of my powers."
As you rambled, everything you spoke was negative, nothing you said about yourself was good and Ao'nung heard enough of you talking bad about yourself.
"y/n, that isn't what I was going to say at all.'' He moved his feet across the rocks, trying to be as close to you as much as you would allow.
"You weren't?" You asked in a small voice, the defensiveness that was laced in your tone dropped and hope seeped its way into your heart as you began to wonder what he wanted to express.
Ao'nung shook his head in response. "No, not at all." He looked deep into your honey eyes, almost as if he was staring at your soul.
"So what were you going to say, then?" You asked while moving your gaze from his face to your feet. Making eye contact with him was nerve-racking. Each time you looked into his cerulean eyes, you got lost within them, as if they would cast a hypnotic spell on you.
Ao'nung gently placed his hand on your chin and lifted your head so you could look at him as he spoke. "I was going to tell you that you sounded amazing while you were singing and your powers, the ability to do the things you do are truly a gift from Eywa. I don't think you're a freak, weird or anything of that sort. I think you're kind, sweet, special, talented, and most importantly beautiful."
As his words fell upon your ears, you could feel your heart rapidly beating as if it would leap out of your chest at any given moment. 'Beautiful. He thinks I'm beautiful.' Yes, you did hear the other sweet things he said, but beautiful is what stuck out to you the most.
Him calling you beautiful only meant one thing: he had feelings for you.
A mauve tint began to appear on your cheeks as you felt the sensation of his large hand on your chin, lightly stroking your cheek every so often."Y-you think I'm beautiful?" You crocked out.
"I think you are the most gorgeous woman my eyes have ever witnessed..." Ao'nung was trying to figure out if this was the right time, the time to tell you how he truly felt. He was nervous about expressing his love for you, he doesn't open up to everyone, so to wear his heart on his sleeve with you would be a big deal for him.
'No better time than the present.' Ao'nung took a deep breath and began to spill out the thoughts that he's kept inside for a long time.
"I know you've only been living among my people for a few months, but my heart has grown for you. From the first moment I saw you, I wanted you, but I was too scared to say anything. However now, I want to shout from the highest hilltop that... I love you. y/n I'm in love with you and I want to be yours if you'll allow me." He ended his confession with an affectionate smile, moving his hand from your face to the nape of your neck which sent a shiver down your spine.
You couldn't believe it. You've been wanting to hear this from Ao'nung for months and you had the exact response you wanted to give planned out in your head. But now, actually being in the moment you didn't know what to say. Your head was jumbled with a million different responses you could say, but each time you pried your lips open, no words could come out.
Ao'nung watched the way your lips would quiver each time you tried to say a new phrase, but no words were spoken. He honestly thought it was cute to see you flustered like this.
"Talk to me, syulang. Tell me what's going through that pretty little head of yours."
By him saying that, the blush spread across your face only intensified and you finally found the words you wanted to say. "I would love nothing more than you becoming mine."
You saying that sent Ao'nung into a state of bliss. His smile got wider, the tension he felt vanished, and his tail began to thump against the rocks below him. You've officially made him feel like he was the luckiest man alive, knowing that you felt the same, that you wanted him to be your boyfriend made him feel complete.
A chuckle erupted from your throat as you watched Ao'nung’s eyes go back and forth from your lush lips to your golden eyes. "You know if you wanted to kiss me you could've just said that, you don't have to keep eyeing me like I'm a piece of meat."
Hearing you playfully tease him only made a smirk curl onto his lips. "Mmmm, well, I guess I should go for it then."
"I think you should." You challenged
Without having to utter another word, Ao'nung began to lean in towards you. His lips became just centimeters apart from yours which made a tingling sensation run through your body. Ao'nung flickered his eyes at you one last time before closing them completely and pressing his lips against yours.
The softness of his teal lips against yours made your lungs clench. The way his large hands traveled slowly down your body, caressing every inch of your skin made your stomach tingle with pleasure. Kissing him made you feel like Eywa herself graced you with her presence, the way Ao’nung made you feel was unimaginable.
The kiss lasted merely a few minutes but it felt like you could've explored his lips forever and never grow tired. As both of you pulled apart you could feel his touch lingering against you, his warm breath gliding over your lips made your skin prickle.
“I love you, Ao’nung.” You whispered as you placed your hand on his cheek while looking up at him with tender eyes that swirled with endearment.
“I love you too, y/n, so much.”
For the rest of the night, both of you sat down on the rock and cuddled, talking about anything and everything that came into your minds while sharing a few kisses here and there in between, lips attracted like a magnet.
With your head laid on his chest and your arm wrapped around his torso you felt like nothing could ruin this beautiful moment between the both of you. After all, you both waited for this moment for a long time and literally nothing could come between you or tear you apart, at least for the night being.
Right now being together was the only thing that mattered.
The more you two talked, Ao’nung realized that he hasn’t asked you the burning question he’s been wanting to know since he found you floating across the water. “y/n?” He whispered gently, not wanting to startle you in your peaceful state.
“Yes, Ao’nung?”
“I have a question…” He said as he began to sit up slowly, wanting to look at you fully while he talked.
“Okay, ask away.” You looked at him, deep inside knowing all about his wonders. It’s not like you were oblivious to the whirrs churning in his head all night.
“How did you get your powers?” And there comes the awaited question.

Twin Flames
pairing: Ao’nung x fem!metkayina na’vi reader
contains: angst with underlying bittersweet fluff, slight infidelity, no smut but a very brief, vague rehashing of events. Ao’nung and reader are both 19. wc: 3,124
“Honestly I’m better as your boy, I’d be kinda shitty as ya man, let’s go back to only being friends. I’m sorry girl I hope you understand it’s just, I don’t wanna fall in love.” - KYLE
Tumblr media
You and Ao’nung were written in the stars. Twin flames. A love so fierce among two souls that it’d be impractical to think you could come out unscathed. Like night and day, never one without the other, but never meant to be together.
He never intended to hurt you, really, he didn’t. But somewhere in all the gold that glittered and the feeling of something fresh and exciting, he simply lost sight and forgot what he really wanted.
Love and Ao’nung were two words that never should have been in the same sentence. You wished you had listened to those around you, to those who noticed the two of you growing far too close for the relationship to remain platonic.
You wished you had listened to those who recognized the familiar gleam he’d get in his eyes when he wanted something he knew he wasn’t supposed to have; to those who warned that he would break you into a million pieces like he did with the others. But what you felt in your heart and saw with your own two eyes, you couldn’t deny. He was different with you, you swear he was.
A friend was what you called each other. Bestfriends. Growing up in Awa’atlu, you were stuck to his side like glue as a child, always begging to go hunting with him and his friends. You wanted to go everywhere he went, do everything he did. Disgruntled and annoyed at first, a little Ao’nung had eventually taken a liking to you, much to his own surprise. And from then on, your presence in each other’s lives was as normal as breathing.
And somewhere along the line, Ao’nung had become gentle with you, contrary to his usual irreverent personality. He stopped treating you like you were just another one of his knuckle-headed friends, but instead something more than that. He found himself staring at you longer than he used to; captivated by the details about your features or personality that he never cared to relish on in the past.
The way your face would light up every time you heard his voice call for you. How you’d beam when you sat with him on the beach and raved about your day. He’d simply watch you, humming in response every now and then to let you know he was listening, on his face a smile so love-sickeningly drenched in admiration while you gesticulated animatedly.
He would have puked had someone held a mirror up to him to see his own besotted expression, but he loved how excited you were to talk to him about the smallest of things. How even while he’s studied the distinct map your starred freckles project along your body over and over again, for some reason, he still finds himself getting lost in them.
He doesn’t want to fall in love.
It’s what he tells himself every time a mention of your name has his ears perking attentively, listening in on the conversation regarding his newfound fascination. Every time a waft of your scent in the salt-laced breeze sends his mind reeling with thoughts he can’t seem to mute. But it’s too late.
Hell, how couldn’t he have fallen for you? You’re always perched on the dock outside his mauri before eclipse, swinging your legs as you patiently await his return from training so the two of you can spend some time alone before dinner.
Genuinely happy to see him regardless of how grumpy he can be, because you like him for him. And you’re completely unaware of how his mind battles with his heart as he admires you from afar, wondering how he’d let himself tumble face first into an irreversible fondness for you.
He doesn’t want to fall in love, but one can’t stop the inevitable.
Snarky teasing turned into transient observations that scarily resembled compliments. Chummy roughhousing morphed to playful touches to the most ticklish parts of you, just so he could hear your pretty laugh cascade through his ears like his own songcord. He had half the mind to add a bead, just for you.
And for a while, he felt it too, honestly he did. But Ao’nung wasn’t familiar with love, had pushed the thought of it away for so long that now he had no idea how it was supposed to happen. The things you were and weren’t supposed to do. He never knew that the fluttering feeling of butterflies swarming in his stomach were good, that he shouldn’t run from them, but embrace them.
Sure he’d grown up watching his parents display their affection to one another; grown up hearing the stories of an adamant, smitten Tonowari pining after a hard-to-get Ronal, despite her apparent aloofness. How he fell first and she fell even harder. But he never actually thought he would end up head over heels for a girl. It was usually the other way around, girls pining over him while he let the attention boost his ego.
He was a no strings kind of guy— utterly terrified by the thought of being responsible for breaking a girl’s heart. Breaking your heart, like he knew he would because he fucks everything up and he wanted no parts of it.
But he’s conflicted. Deep down he does want what his parents have. Someone to call his own, someone to come home to. Someone who means more than a stupid hookup that would leave him regretting his decision afterwards and wondering why the hell he went through with it. But like always with the metkayina boy, pride trumps what his heart already knows.
He’s well aware that it’s too good to be true. The thought that he could ever experience what it truly means to be happy, by letting himself be loved by you, is all that it will ever be. A thought. An unattainable aspiration. He knows you’re too good for him. Compassionate, thoughtful, kind. Everything he’ll never be, coupled with a heart much too pure to be polluted by his indecision.
But maybe, just maybe he could enjoy the reverie while it lingered, and pretend like he could really have you all to himself. Just for one night. Selfishly disregarding his issues with commitment, all he could think about while he laid in bed was how badly he wanted to see you, how badly he wanted to be with you.
Leading you on was the last thing on his mind that late night he’d snuck out from his Mauri and to yours, determinedly pitching small shells he’d collected on the way there between the flowing tulle curtains of your open window to get your attention.
And for some reason you couldn’t sleep, as if that was fate’s way of setting the two of you up for failure from the beginning. You’d already spent an hour staring up at the intricate weaving of your Mauri’s roof, wishing your eyelids would hurry up and become weighted, when the small disruption of something clattering against the floorboards had you sitting up almost instantly.
You smiled keenly, already having an idea of who it was. He told you he’d come for you later, sometime after eclipse, and he always kept his promises. At least, you thought he did.
The both of you waded by the shore beneath the light of the moon, legs brushing against the other from the effort of treading once you swam further out. Childishly splashing the other with small waves of cool, salty water and trying your best to keep your laughter quiet; the village long asleep but your hearts awake.
It was when he bundled you closer, when strong arms lagged through the calm waters to wind around your waist and pull you into him. That, was when you knew nothing would be the same.
You should have pulled away, should have called it a night before things could progress, like the voice in the back of your head was telling you to do. But just like always, those ocean eyes held you in a trance, a smug grin on his face in response to how deeply you blushed and it only made matters worse.
You wonder now if he knew what he was doing when he brought a hand up to caress your dampened cheek, his gaze undeniably tender when he told you he’d always thought you were the most beautiful girl he’d ever seen.
You see now that you were stupid to fall for it. But in that fleeting moment, with your arms around his neck and your hearts beating as one, his lips moving against yours felt so right. It felt like that was where you were always meant to be, in his arms, pressed against the warmth of his skin as he set your soul ablaze.
You’d spent the rest of the night on the sand, the comfort of your bed long forgotten. He was all you needed. Entangled underneath the moonlight as you let him see so much farther into you than you had with anyone. He kissed broken promises upon your skin, lust-drunken words slurred from his mouth swaddled in the crook of your neck and you can’t believe you trusted him.
Your ability to see the good in everyone ultimately played the role in your downfall. You took pride in being someone who went off actions, and not words. Because it had never failed you before, but since then you’ve learned to never say never.
Curse your aching heart. You really should have listened when everyone told you to run, that behind all the kind gestures and longing glances and saccharine kisses to the forehead— it was all a game to him.
Things weren’t official with the two of you but you had planned to change that. Flung so deep into the intensity of your own feelings, everything about the way he treated you let you know that he must have felt the same.
Surely it’d be impossible to do all that the two of you had done with someone and not catch feelings. It’d be unimaginable to let someone peer so extensively into what makes you you, and somehow not fall in love with them.
“Meet me by the mangroves at noon, our spot.” You’d murmured between a parting kiss, just the day before, and he can’t believe he forgot.
He was enjoying his time with you too much to notice that he let things go on for too long, too busy reveling in the feeling of what it felt like to truly be loved. To be cared for.
He never intended for it to go this far, constantly having to remind himself to break the news to you that he wanted to remain friends, so he wouldn’t lose you all together. To let you go before he could do something to hurt you.
Ao’nung knew he was in too deep the moment he realized you were the last image playing behind his eyelids when he fell asleep, and the first thing he thought about when he woke up.
The idea of him loving someone so profoundly shocked him to his core, scared him into submitting back into his old habits. He needed to be with someone who couldn’t see him, someone who if he were to mess things up, the sight of them in fragments due to his actions wouldn’t cause him to endure that same agony. So subconsciously, he did what he always does when he has a good thing going for him. Fuck it up.
The sound of his laughter in the distance carried your feet along the buoyant netting that served as walkway between the homes of your village. A hopeful grin plastered on your face and a freshly woven armband clutched between your hands. A gift from him to you, and though not very traditional for you to give the first courting gift, nothing about your situation was, so you found it more than fitting.
The sight in front of you halted your movements, leaving your mind to try and make sense of the scene before your eyes could confirm what you feared to be true. What everyone had tried to warn you of.
The man who succeeded in making you feel a way no other had, stood a little ways in front of you, with a girl. Her back leaned against the rocks while she batted her lashes and gazed at him as if he’d hung the stars in the sky himself. The same way you’d found yourself doing every time he so much as looked in your direction.
A mere conversation between the two of them would never have been enough to upset you, you liked to think you were more secure than that. But you’d be lying to yourself if you claimed you didn’t see the way his hand cradled her cheek, and how his eyes flitted over her features, as if she were the most beautiful girl he’d ever seen.
Your insecurities didn’t have much work to do, as it was the words that left his own mouth that confirmed your fears. The same thing he had confessed to you— all those nights ago when you laid intwined under the stars— he swore to her. With that same glint in his eye, that same longing look that you were foolish to ever believe would be reserved for you.
A fire surged up the column of your throat and a dreadful weight settled in the pit of your stomach that almost had your knees buckling. Your lips parted to speak, to ask him what the hell he was doing with her when he was supposed to have met you here.
But the words never came, they remained lodged between the confines of your heart-wrenched vocal cords. Your fist tightened around what would’ve been a lovely moment between the two of you, and the sound of it thumping against the ground, paired with the cloud of sand it brought up in its wake was enough to peel his attention from your giggling contender.
His startled, turned guilt-ridden expression would’ve rendered comical to you, but the rush of hot tears that bubbled over your waterline and stained your seafoam cheeks were far too impatient to wait for you to get a laugh in.
You staggered back with a denying shake of your head, a string of curses inaudible as you threw your hands up once he made a move to get to you. The girl he had been so enamored with just moments ago conveniently forgotten the second he witnessed your heart fall through your chest.
He called out for you in a panic, hurriedly sifted his hands through pale golden and swiftly scooped the disheveled accessory from the sand before his feet took off.
Ao’nung chased you through the village until he was nearly winded. Ignoring your hisses for him to leave you alone and brushing off the harsh shoves you sent to his chest as if they weren’t actually starting to hurt.
“Please, wait!” Another plea for you that went ignored, your ears only filled with the painful ringing of betrayal.
Blinded by the moisture in your eyes, you realized he’d cornered you. Chased you all the way to a secluded clearing behind the palm trees so you would stop running and just talk to him.
A strong hand gripped your forearm, turning you around rougher than intended to meet the frantic look in his eyes. “Please,” He implored breathlessly and his chest heaved from his efforts just moments earlier. “I never meant for it to go like this.”
You twirled from his grasp and swatted his hand away in the process, your face screwed up with hurt and he watched every conflicted emotion pass through your eyes at once. You didn’t even know how you were still standing.
“I gave myself to you!” Your voice wavered as you thrusted an accusatory finger to his chest. His lips moved, but no words left them as he clutched the forgotten gift in his hands. “I can’t believe I was so stupid.” You whisked your head away, shielding your face as another round of tears threatened to make themselves known, as if you weren’t embarrassed enough.
“I’m- I’m sorry, I don’t know what I was thinking. I-“ His head dipped to the side to match his drooping shoulders, and you felt the rough pad of his thumb graze your cheekbone in an attempt to fix what was already broken. “Tahni, please, I was going to tell you. I swear-“
“You did this on purpose, didn’t you? Was this all some kind of sick game to you?” You choked out and backed away from his touch with your arms crossed over your chest, suddenly feeling exposed in front of the man who had already seen you so much barer than you stood now.
But with your feelings worn on your sleeves and so obviously unreciprocated, you felt more naked than you’d ever been regardless of the coverings you were wearing. Completely vulnerable in front of him, so naively gullible to think he’d ever put aside his immature desires and feel the same way you did.
“What- No! I’d- I’d never-“ He sputtered an answer vehemently, his expression almost wounded as he immediately denied your claim. “I just, I can’t give you what you need. You deserve better than me.” His hands found yours despite your efforts to avoid them, and he quickly realized why you didn’t want to be touched.
A stark contrast from your pained stature, the affliction he had caused, your body relaxed the second he touched you and your composure crumbled before him.
Sobs racked through your body and you weakly tugged your hands from his grasp to no avail, your words shaky as you begged for him to let you go. And without another thought he pulled you into his embrace, firmly caging you between the arms that once comforted you.
But they failed to replicate that same feeling, the image of what once was completely tarnished by his own actions. The words that left your lips were enough to make his eyes well with a wetness foreign to him. A deep-seated feeling he’d never forget. Remorse.
“You’re cruel, Ao’nung.”
The sound of your heart shattering drowned out his incessant, anguished apologies and your body slumped in his arms. You let him hold you, allowed your forehead to fall into the dip of his chest as large hands caressed into the curve between your trembly shoulders.
You mindlessly permitted his attempts to console you as you knew you would never let him close to you again. The two of you stood like that for a few minutes, until your weeping reduced to jagged inhales while you struggled to catch your breath.
“Did it mean anything to you at all? Any of it?” You squeaked hopelessly, and the sound of your broken voice sent daggers to the heart you were almost certain he didn’t have.
With his chin rested atop your head, his eyes squeezed shut and he exhaled unsteadily before he spoke.
“More than you know.”

Astray (Ao’nung!)
Tumblr media
Ao’nung x Metkayina Reader
part 1
Synopsis: You’ve been in love with Ao’nung since as long as you can remember. And for just as long, he’s constantly pushed you away. He’s made it clear he doesn’t want you. Yet when the Sully’s arrive in Awa’atlu and the eldest boy shows an interest in you, Ao’nung starts to regret his actions.
warnings: angst, bullying.
a/n: I’m obsessed with Avatar rn & I couldn’t not write for my two boyfriends lmao
Tumblr media
You see him roll his eyes before you’ve even approached him on the sand. Brushing the wet curls away from your eyes, you smile widely at the Olo’eyktan’s son, the same boy you’ve known since the moment you could walk. You’re aware he isn’t too fond of your presence but you’ve done your best to befriend him regardless. Being practically like a sister to his own Tsireya, that factor made it slightly easier to get closer to the boy. But still your attempts never flourished into anything besides you left feeling foolish and embarrassed.
Everytime you’ve suggested doing anything alone with him he either shrugs you off or avoids contact with you before you can even try. You’ll be making a direct beeline toward him and he’ll already be turning in the other direction, hastily trying to catch up to Rotxo and the other boys. His coldness toward you is paired with the usual ‘banter’ you share, in which he insults you and finds new ways to tease you. Anyone with good sense would find this treatment unappealing but you held out more hope for Ao’nung than he deserved.
“Ao’nung!” You call out as you step from beyond the water to approach him. The look on his face already tells you enough but you ignore the signs, ecstatic that you’ve finally caught him alone. He’s usually swarmed by Roxto and the other boys in the Reef, their uneasy presence making your job harder.
“What do you want?” He tuts, his forehead creased as he wears an agitated look on his face. You ignore it, yet again.
“I—I didn’t see you earlier at breakfast. Just wanted to talk, that’s all” You hum, your eyes lowering from his intense gaze, fiddling with the beads on your necklace nervously.
“That’s because I was hiding from you” He snickers, kicking the soft sand with his foot as he turns to glance at the marui pods at the village.
“I have an important meeting to attend to with my father. Meet me back here at night fall. We can talk then” He hums with a slight smile on his face. Before you can even respond or question his sudden act of kindness he walks off back to the marui pods and leaves you speechless.
He’s never suggested meeting you at night before, his request is strange but you don’t question it— instead you thank Eywa for finally blessing you with this. It’ll be a way forward for the two of you and maybe Ao’nung would finally feel the same way about you. A smile grows on your face as you make your way back to your own marui pod, butterflies already raging in your stomach as you thought about all the possibilities for tonight.
You wait for your parents to drift off into deep slumber before you finally leave your pod, glancing at your parents one last time before you quietly tip toe out onto the walkway. You hear your heart pounding in your ears as you walk along the beach, the waves crashing against the shore as your feet leave imprints in the sand. You feel confused as you see no sign of Ao’nung, standing exactly where you had talked earlier— you hoped he was just waiting to sneak out.
“He’ll be here soon” You try to reassure yourself as you wait a little while longer, your fingers tightening around the necklace that rested against your chest.
Defeated after waiting for what feels like an eternity, you finally stand and dust the sand from your legs before you decide to just go back home. Perhaps he couldn’t leave his home, you understood how strict his parents were, being a child of such important people to the village, you were aware of how hard they were on their kids.
As you’re walking back from where you came, you hear someone laugh from behind you. Confused, you turn— eyes meeting Ao’nung's who laughs cruelly as he stares at you. He isn’t alone, Rotxo and two of his other friends are with him and they begin to circle you.
“I told you she’d fall for it” Ao’nung smirks, closing you in so you’re completely surrounded by his friends.
“This isn’t funny guys. Leave me alone” You stutter out, almost losing your footing as you’re constantly moving— trying to find a way out of this.
“You didn’t want to leave Ao’nung alone— so why should we?” Rotxo snorts before he shoves you slightly by your shoulder, you stumble— causing them all to laugh.
“You thought he’d finally confess his love for you? I see you— is that what you want to hear from him?” His other friend mocks you, the sound of his words and the truth behind them causing your face to warm in embarrassment.
“It’s true. Look at her she’s blushing”
“Please just let me go home” You mutter, growing overwhelmed by the boys that surround you. You felt like you were being suffocated, struggling to breathe as they held you hostage.
“You’ll leave me alone from now on. You won’t follow me around like a little baby anymore and you’ll stop clinging onto me— understood?” Ao’nung says lowly as he steps closer to you, his lips dangerously close to your ear as he utters his words. You nod silently, holding your breath as you wait for him to finally pull away.
“Freak” He chuckles before he pulls away and uses force to push you— causing you to stumble and collide onto the sand with a loud thud. Your face hits the ground first, the impact causing you to feel winded and your new wound to throb instantly. You feel hot tears trail down your face as you watch them leave, laughing amongst themselves as they playfully push each other.
You knew he didn’t like you but you never thought he’d do something so cruel. You’ve been nothing but kind and caring toward him and he repays you by throwing it in your face like this. You no longer saw a boy you longed for, you had once dreamed of being his wife but now you saw nothing for the two of you. You meant nothing to him, you only realised that now. How foolish and naive could you have been.
Your hands shake as you reach for your beaded necklace only to find the space absent on your chest, your eyes widen as you quickly shift onto your knees— tears clouding your vision even more as you realise your necklace was broken. The one your mother had painstakingly pieced together for your twelfth birthday was in ruin— the beads and shells strewn across the sand.
You sniffled as you picked up every piece you could find, wiping away the tears from your face with the back of your hand as you did. You barely slept that night, your tears never ending as you replayed every moment again in your head.
The next day you pretend as though everything is normal, you lie to your parents saying that the scar on your forehead was from a graze against coral during your dive. They don’t question it and neither does Tsireya when you meet her after you’ve eaten.
“So clumsy, my sister. Please be more careful” She tuts as she smears some of her mother’s paste over the cut. I smile at her as she lovingly cares for me, far more than her brother ever had.
You pretend he doesn’t exist, seeing as the village isn’t extremely big— you were bound to run into him and his friends. You combat this problem by doing exactly as he asked, you stopped glancing at him— looking at him altogether. You wouldn’t run up to him to try and gain mere minutes of his attention and you didn’t bother suggesting anything anymore. You stopped trying to exist to him.
Ao’nung noticed the drastic change instantly. You didn’t cling onto him or call out to him unnecessarily. You didn’t even glance his way once— not even when he called out to Tsireya to ask her a question whilst you were right by her side. You just focused your attention elsewhere until he walked off.
He should feel relieved. He is to an extent, this is what he’s wanted for years. You’d finally stop nagging him and he could finally find another woman in the village to connect with without you being on his tail. He should be grateful it’s stopped, but he doesn’t feel as satisfied with the change as much as he thought he would.
It was tradition for you to eat with their family every second day, you had been doing it since you were little and Tonowari and Ronal welcomed you with open arms. You were practically like their third child and the sister Tsireya didn’t have yet. Ao’nung is confused when he enters his family’s murui pod and notices that you aren’t there.
“Where is y/n?” Ao’nung questions as he reluctantly sits down in his usual spot. Tsireya is unphased as she answers, too focused on cooking the last of the fish.
“She feels sick so she’s not coming. I’m taking soup for her later”
Ao’nung already knew you weren’t sick and it bothered him slightly that his words would cause you to distance yourself from his family— sure he’d be there but he figured he’d just stay clear of your way. He ate in silence that night, his mind too plagued with thoughts of you to try and converse with his family over dinner.
It’s been weeks since the incident and you’ve managed to keep up with your silence toward Ao’nung. You haven’t spoken a word or barely looked at him and it’s grown easier as the days have passed. You’re wading in the water with your ilu, hand caressing it’s head delicately as you enjoy the fish that swim around you. You wait patiently for Tsireya beside her pod, huffing as you wait longer than you expect.
“Apologies my sister— I was showing the Sully’s some of the village” Tsireya apologises as she stands on the dock, the Omatakiyan kids following behind her. You had heard of their arrival just a day ago but you were out diving when they had first shown up so you missed the theatrics of their arrival.
You introduce yourself to them and they do the same in return, your eye catching onto one of them in particular— one who seems to be the oldest. His eyes were glued onto you first, a look of awe on his face that caused you to look away shyly.
“They will swim with us today. I figured we could both help them…along with Ao’nung and Rotxo” Tsireya says lowly to you when she swims toward you, still keeping a close eye on the Sully kids who paddle toward you. You huff when you see Ao’nung and Rotxo approaching the water, you turn before you can gain his attention and focus on Tuk who’s splashing around.
“You’re a graceful swimmer” Neteyam says after we’ve all swam a few meters away from the marui pods. He purposely lagged behind the group to swim with you, the gesture causing your chest to warm. You smile at him as you stop swimming, causing him to do the same.
“Thank you— I never used to be. I splashed around too much, apparently I looked like I was drowning half of the time” You chuckle, earning a laugh from the older boy.
“Mistakes are what made you such a good swimmer today, you would’ve never learnt without them” Neteyam says wisely.
“You’re definitely the oldest. You are by far the wisest” He smiles at your words before questioning you.
“Do you have siblings of your own?”
“Sadly, no. I was the only child my parents managed to bore. I see the love you share between your siblings, I adore it very much” You state, noting the way there seems to be a glimmer in his eye from your words.
The two of you talk for the rest of the lesson, finding out more about each other bit by bit. Both of you learn more about the forest and Sea people and the way you both grew up— fascinated by the differences between the two. In all honesty you were too engrossed in your own conversation that you had forgotten about the lessons— unlike the others who watched you both from afar.
“I doubt Neteyam learnt anything. He’s been too busy making heart eyes at your friend” Lo’ak teases as he states the obvious infront of the whole group who sit on the rocks away from the water. Ao’nung’s feels his hands ball into a fist at the sight, growing irritated by both of you. The Sully boy had been here for merely a day and he had already won you over. Ao'nung silently wishes it were him that is making you laugh, the reason you wear a smile so big. He looks away bitterly, concealing the fact he's bothered by it.
"You breathe from here" You instruct, mirroring the actions Tsireya had been using on Lo'ak. You notice the way Neteyam's face warms at the feeling of your hands on his skin, his breathing hitching slightly under your touch.
"Just as Lo'ak is doing.... good, just like that" You hum, praising the boy in front of you. You're unaware of the eyes of the boy you had once begged Eywa to court you burning on the sight of you. Ao'nung couldn't tear his eyes away from you, he needed to interfere somehow-- he had seen enough.
"Perhaps I need help with my breathing as well y/n" You hear Ao'nung tease you from across the rocks you're all grouped on. You give him a deadpan look-- your hands still on Neteyam's torso.
"You're not funny" You scoff before turning back toward Neteyam, muttering besides I would let him drown, causing Neteyam to let out a laugh. Ao'nung catches the sight of that, huffing in annoyance he stands to leave.
The days pass and you find yourself growing closer to Jake Sully’s eldest son. You mentor him during your lessons, swim with him even after you’ve finished for the day and explore the reef with him. You both skip dinner most nights to spend that time together— something that his siblings now tease you both about. When you’re together you don’t miss the way he gazes at you longingly sometimes, admiration in his eyes as you show him the beauty of your home.
“Do you miss your home?” You question him as you both sit on the sand, legs practically touching as you both face the water.
“Yeah, I do. The forest was all I ever knew— I didn’t know how beautiful the reefs are. But I’m grateful in the change, it’s led me to you” Neteyam hums and you feel a smile creep onto your face as you glance at him— his eyes already focused on your face.
“You’re a sweet boy, Nete” You lean your head against his shoulder, harnessing the warmth on his skin for your own.
“Meet me here at night. I want to give you something” His words remind you of Ao’nung’s the night he lead you astray— lied to you and embarrassed you in front of his friends. Although you’ve only known Neteyam for a short time, you knew he would never do the same thing.
You agree to meet later before you depart, humming to yourself as you make your way to the chief’s marui pod. You felt guilty for skipping dinner with their family for so long so you decided to attend tonight— despite the fact you didn’t want to see Ao’nung, you would bare his presence for them.
“I see you have been getting along with the Sully boy quite well” Ronal hums as she passes the woven basket full of food to you. Ao’nung scoffs at the mention of Neteyam— silently swearing he would drown him the next chance he gets.
“Neteyam is kind to me and he makes me laugh. He’s a good friend and he’ll be useful here. He’s already learning well” You hum, smiling to yourself at the thought of the boy you were going to meet tonight.
“He’s a forest boy. I still think he’s useless” Ao’nung laughs, forcing you to avert your attention to him. Finally. He thinks to himself, this is the first time tonight that you’ve actually bothered to look at him.
“Skxawng. You’re just jealous y/n found someone better than you” Tsireya hisses at him, causing him to give her a warning look. Before the arguing can continue any further, their parents demand they end it and eat in peace. You stay longer than you expect, busily talking to Ronal and Tsireya— you don’t realise that it’s night fall already and you cut your time short.
“Sorry for leaving so suddenly… I forgot my mother wanted me to help her with weaving” You lie, offering an apologetic smile to the family before you hastily leave their marui pod. Ao’nung eyes you as you walk off, unaware he’s even watching you— you don’t bother pretending to walk back to your own home.
You’re pulled away and pushed up against a mangrove tree beside you, the suddenness causing you to feel winded almost as you try to make out who’s attacked you. Before you can even let out a sound, their hand clamps over your mouth. It’s far too dark to make out who it is but you recognise his features and the way his hands feel.
It’s Ao’nung.

You always were an “odd” kid they’d say. You weren’t necessarily different you just didn’t follow the quota — free spirited in a sense. You never let anyone talk down to you and you didn’t care about people’s feelings towards you, it never seemed to bother you. You also were 100% admit about boys, you swore to yourself at age 6 that’d you never get a boyfriend or mess with boys and you followed that to heart.
“WHAT?!” you yelled at your mother and father as they told you and your siblings that y’all would be moving. You knew about everything that previously happened but you know you thought y’all would pull through. You stomped your foot and your tail swayed angrily, “this isn’t fair, all we’ve known is the forest” you said gritting your teeth. “i know i know baby-” jake said before you cut him off “where would we even go??” you said crossing your arms.
Your siblings were visibly upset but you spoke your mind — as always. “stop.” your dad said firmly and you sighed and looked to the ground in silence. “we are being targeted and we cannot risk anything”.
Then the next thing you knew y’all arrived to a water village, you and your family landed and hopped off. Y’all were tired and desperate even you, but you’d never show it. Among the crowd 3 boys came out and eyed your family, you snarled as they circled y’all. Your fraternal twin— neteyam smacked the back of your head and you death glared him while rubbing your head. Your father and mother talked to the clan’s leaders, and the boys made fun of y’all.
Then the tsahìk insulted your brother “they have demon blood!” and you saw red, “we’re no different than you” you grumbled holding back. You knew how badly y’all needed this but you couldn’t just let them disrespect you and your family.
After they talked they decided to teach us, or technically their son ao’nung and daughter tsireya. You definitely didn’t want to learn from the asshole bully, but your dad told you otherwise and you have been pushing your luck recently. So you complied and held your tongue for your family — for your people.
You prefer tsireya over ao’nung by a landslide, you didn’t understand how she turned out so nice and her brother is just…him. They had been teaching y’all how to become better divers, finger talk, and all about their culture.
Then one day you and kiri were on the shore and you were looking for seashells as kiri was looking at a hole in the sand. You were a little bit away from kiri as you saw ao’nung and rotxo and you immediately ran over but it was too late. “he said are you some kind of freak?” rotxo said laughing looking at ao’nung. Then you grabbed kiri’s hand “speak for yourself fishy” you growled.
“Oh look it’s big sis coming to protect little sis” ao’nung teased “damn straight” you spat as you put kiri behind you. They circled y’all “you aren’t even true navi! look at your fingers!” you smiled and flicked him off — like your brother neteyam you had 3 fingers. “suck on that bitch” you laughed “maybe you have normal fingers but your sister doesn’t”. “doesn’t matter” you snapped eyeing him up and down.
The sight of him enraged you, you never have met someone so rude and so cocky. “look at them they have baby tails!” rotxo laughed “hey!” you heard lo’ak come to y’all’s “rescue”. You clenched your jaw as they made fun of him too and then neteyam came in and told them to basically fuck off and they did — ish. “they’re all freaks the whole family” they whispered and lo’ak whipped his head around. You knew exactly what was going to happen and you sighed mentally preparing yourself for a fight.
Then lo’ak punched ao’nung and you snorted “it’s called a punch bitch!”. Then all hell broke loose and you jumped into the fight, punching, scratching, and biting. Then your hair got pulled by ao’nung “let go fucker!” you yelped and lo’ak and neteyam got him off you. Kiri just sat and watched rolling her eyes as she watched her siblings fight.
Eventually y’all tired out and y’all looked rough — your hair was a complete mess and you and your brothers had matching busted lips and bleeding noses. Then big boss found out…”i tell y’all to do one thing!” your dad yelled. “stay out of trouble” y’all said in unison, “yes exactly and you can’t even do that!” he said looking at all of y’all as your head hung low. Your dad looked at you in the eyes “now i except this shit from those two knuckleheads but you— no ma’am you’re better than this i’m disappointed”.
Your heart sunk and tears threatened to fall, you hated when your dad said he was disappointed. You could handle him being mad, but disappointed was different. “yes sir” you said clutching your hands into fists. “go apologize right now” you immediately whipped your head up and was about to talk back before your dad held his hand up “i don’t care just go make peace”. You grumbled as you walked off and neteyam stayed behind a little then joined you and lo’ak.
“he wants peace? i’ll give him the fucking ocean” you laughed.
As more time passed the more you fucking hated ao’nung and his face, his stupid smirk, head tilts and looks, the way he looked at you is what you hated the most. It felt like he was eating you with his eyes and it made you uncomfortable. You didn’t know how to handle these emotions, they were too much. Especially because they were about a boy — a stupid ignorant boy.
“hey freak keeper” ao’nung called you, “what do you want?” you groaned as you were weaving a necklace. “oh nothing just wondering where your freak siblings are” you gritted your teeth and looked at him in the eyes. You saw he was smirking— then it clicked. He was doing this to get a reaction out of you. You calmed yourself down and stood up, “i don’t know why your obsessed with me and my family” you said condescendingly. “but you need a new hobby dear” you chuckled hoping he’d feel stupid.
Little did you know your words hit his heart and made him blush lightly. He didn’t know why that got him, he thought you were equally a freak.
“yea whatever” he said before walking away defeated.
More incidents similar to those kept happening and it became a game to you, you starting hoping you’s see ao’nung so you could make a fool out of him. Or maybe you wanted to see him for a different reason? You were also oblivious to the eyes on you — constantly.
You arrived late to dinner and there wasn’t many people left. You sat down and ate at the campfire, you scanned who was around and saw ao’nung by himself. You quickly looked away shoving fish into your mouth, you hoped he didn’t see you. Although it was too late ao’nung was staring hard. He was looking how your skin was glowing at night with the fire light. He felt his face burning and his heart racing — he knew he shouldn’t and that made him want you even more. He thought you were a freak, but your freak ass had him falling.
You felt his eyes on you and you got up and left to go eat by the water. “hey!” you groaned and turned around with your mouth full. “wha?” you said “ew don’t talk with your mouth full” ao’nung said scrunching up his nose. “bleeehhhh” you said sticking your tongue out with your food and he freaked out making you laugh so hard you started choking on your food and ao’nung laughed while hitting your back and then you were fine.
Y’all kept laughing trying to calm down “you s-shouldve seen your face!” you laughed, “I THOUGHT YOU WERE GOING TO DIE!!” he said flustered. You slapped his back and held onto him as you kept laughing trying to calm yourself. “oh my that’s so funny” you said finally done with your fit of laughter. Your cheeks were sore from smiling, and you noticed he was staring. He was blushing and you felt your cheeks burn “what?” you said fixing your hair.
“nothing” he smiled shaking his head “i gotta go but i’ll see you later yea?”. He was being nice and it was — suspicious. Then he walked away and your heart skipped a beat, ‘no nun-uh absolutely not!’ you thought to yourself. You gently slapped your face to bring yourself back “absolutely not” you whispered to yourself before walking to bed.
You tossed and turned in your bed not being able to sleep, you groaned and sat up. You only had one thing on your mind and it was driving you crazy — ao’nung. You got up and walked to the beach and sat down in the sand and looked up at the stars “eywa why me, you know i don’t like messing with boys…but if it’s you that i dunno brought him to me then i can’t ignore you but i’m scared…” you sighed playing with the sand. “scared of what?” you jumped and turned around “jeez you scared me!” you said to ao’nung.
“What are you doing here?” he said tilting his head to the side, “i could ask the same thing” you said looking up at him. He then sat beside you and y’all looked out at the water, the moonlight was illuminating y’all. “Ao’nung..” you trailed off “yes?” he said turning his head looking at you and you brought your head up looking at him. Your face went red and your heart was racing “you..fuck uh” you said looking away covering your mouth. He chuckled “come on spit it out” he said lightly nudging you.
“It’s complicated…” you said bringing your knees to your chin. “I’m listening” your heart swelled ‘tell him’ you thought. You were so scared of these new feelings, and you were even more scared to say them out loud because once you did that meant they had to be true. You inhaled deeply before saying “AO’NUNGITHINKIMIGHIKEYOUIDON’TKNOWTHISISMYFIRSTTIMEHAVINGACRUSHANDI’MSCAREDYOUDON’TFEELTHESAME!” you quickly said before burying your face into your hands to hide your bright red blush.
Ao’nung blinked 3 times before smiling and laughing “what are you laughing at?!” you said almost crying. He saw and immediately stopped and held your face “nonono i’m sorry! i do feel the same, it’s just you’re too cute” he said kissing your cheek. A tear rolled down your face and he freaked out and you laughed wiping it away. “I’m glad you feel the same because if you didn’t i think i would’ve drowned myself” y’all both laughed. Ao’nung then softly smiled and grabbed your hand “i promise i’ll do my best to make you happy and protect you”.
You smiled and cupped his face with your other hand “i don’t need saving but i appreciate it” you said kissing his forehead. Then you scooted close up to him and laid your head on his shoulder listening to the sounds all around y’all.
“Now what?” he said “shush just stay here with me and look at the stars dummy.”

From an early age, you learned that the line between hate and love could be very thin.
When you were just eight years old, you were the first child of Jake and Neytiri to tell your mother that you hated her. The reason was quite trivial; she had taken away your toy after you had taken it from Kiri. But even at that young age, you understood the gravity of your words when you saw the disappointment on her face. You immediately apologized and spent the rest of the day by her side.
Six years later, when you were fourteen, your brother Lo’ak did something that annoyed you, as brothers often do. He snatched away a beaded necklace that you had been working on all day. You were already feeling frustrated because it had taken you so long to make, unlike your talented and quick sister, Kiri, or your mother. The words came out easily this time: "I hate you, you skxawng."
But deep down, you didn't hate him at all. In fact, you loved him fiercely and would do anything to protect him, even fight to the death. You just hoped that it wouldn't come to that. Fortunately, the spat blew over quickly, just as it had started.
You often had conversations with your father, Jake, who would explain that there was a thin line between hate and love. You remember reading about this concept in one of the books left behind by the Sky People, but your father insists that he came up with it himself. You don't have the heart to tell him you knew, so you just let him have his victory.
Despite this, as you grew older, you became more and more skeptical of the idea that love and hate were two sides of the same coin. By the time you reached 19, you were convinced that the line between the two emotions was non-existent. This belief was only reinforced by the fact that your parents had informed you that you would have to leave behind the life you had always known. The news made you furious and you felt as though the rug had been pulled out from under you.
You had never asked to be caught in the middle of this conflict between your people and the sky people. All you ever wanted was to live in peace and harmony. You had hoped that over the 15 years since the sky people had last visited, your own people would have found a way to prevent another conflict from breaking out. But now you found yourself on the run, fleeing for your life, and wondering whether peace would ever be possible.
“I hate you," you said with conviction as you stormed off, too consumed by your own emotions to consider theirs. The words felt too familiar on your tongue, as if you said them too many times before. Perhaps they knew they weren't true, but that didn't stop you from ever saying it again.
You don't immediately apologize or take back your words. Instead, you pack your belongings to leave, too angry and aggravated to consider the consequences of your actions. Your family is hurt, but you're hurting too so avoiding your parents became your new strategy. But Neteyam had other plans. It’s only when he confronts you that you start to realize the gravity of the situation.
He reminds you that family is forever, even if you don't always see eye-to-eye or want to be around them. The reminder hits hard, and you're filled with remorse for how you've treated your loved ones. Tears flow equally for your family and having to say say goodbye to your home.
The journey to Awa'atlu was awkward, but this time it wasn't because of you. Unlike popular believe aka your siblings and you, the world didn’t revolve around you. In fact, your world was currently with you, lost in their own thoughts, weighed down by the heavy emotions of the past few days. The weight of starting over somewhere new feels suffocating, but you know that you have to try to make the best of it.
When you arrived with your family on the sandy shores of the reef, you had hoped to approach this new experience with a positive attitude. Despite the openly judgmental stares from the Metkayina people who scrutinized the genetic makeup of you and your siblings, you made a conscious effort to focus on the bright side of things, especially when your father informed the chief of your shared goal to seek uturu.
But adapting to this new environment has been far from easy, and you knew it wouldn't be a smooth transition. You were strangers to their traditions and culture, and it was only natural that there would be some difficulties. To make matters worse, you and two of your siblings were considered "demons" by the Metkayina people, further complicating your efforts to fit in.
Despite your best efforts to maintain a dream-like state of acceptance, it was impossible to ignore the harsh reality of the situation. You had been living with the Metkayina people for months now, but every day felt like a struggle to fit in. You missed the comforts of home and the familiarity of your own culture.
The constant reminder that you and your siblings were labeled as demons was a weight that you couldn't seem to shake off. While most of the people in the tribe had welcomed you with open arms, there were a few like Ao'nung and his group who constantly taunted and teased you. It started with your siblings, but eventually, they turned their attention to you, making you feel unwelcome and out of place.
The longing to leave grew stronger with each passing day, but you also couldn't help feeling guilty for wanting to give up. You knew that your parents had made a difficult decision to move to this new place, and you didn't want to disappoint them.
However, the pain of being ridiculed and ostracized made it difficult to stay. You wondered if you would ever truly feel like you belonged here, or if you would always feel like an outsider. The weight of these thoughts and emotions was becoming too heavy to bear, and you longed for a way out.
This feeling was particularly strong on days like today when you found yourself completely alone. Perched on a rock at the edge of the reef, you felt disconnected from the world around you, lost in your thoughts and longing for a sense of belonging. Getting out of your head felt impossible until he comes along and disrupts it.
“You’re alone, sevin.”
The sound of his voice is so distinct, it's impossible to forget it, even if you tried. You hate to admit it, but you could recognize him just by his voice, even with your eyes closed. Sometimes you even saw him in your mind when you shut your eyes. However, the Ao’nung you knew never called you “sevin [pretty]” so you begin to second guess yourself.
However, as you see him standing there, tall and smoldering, you are one hundred percent certain it is him. His face is uncharacteristically relaxed when it comes to you, and you can't help but feel a sense of discomfort. This is him, but not the him you’re used to.
“Huh?” you purse your lips, eyebrows furrowed in confusion as you try to make sense of the situation.
He lowers his head slightly, squinting his eyes as he smiles in his usual mischief manner, which is now all too familiar to you. "You're alone?" he repeats, the sound of his voice piercing through the quiet surroundings. As he walks towards you, the water splashes around him, adding to the tension of the moment.
Sighing, you roll your eyes and slump your shoulders in frustration. "No shit," you mutter under your breath, already dreading the idea of spending any time with him.
Ao’nung chuckles, the sound rumbling from deep within his chest. He takes a few steps closer to you, the water now up to his waist. "No one’s keeping your company, huh?" he drawls, his voice dripping with sarcasm. "Don’t worry, I’m here."
You clench your fists, eyes starting to sting as you feel your anger bubbling up inside of you. Ao'nung always had a way of getting under your skin, and you were in no mood for his taunts today, nor any day.
"Can't you see I'm trying to enjoy some peace and quiet?" you snap, turning your back to him with crossed arms. Hopefully he gets the hint this time and leave.
But Ao'nung doesn't seem deterred. Instead, he wades closer until he's standing right behind you, his hot breath tickling your neck. You tense up, feeling his presence looming over you like a predator stalking its prey.
His voice whispers dangerously close to your ear, you feel a shiver run down your spine. "Why are you being so hostile?" he asks, peering over your shoulder to catch a glimpse of your face. You can practically hear the pout in his lips, "I’m just trying to be nice," his tone dripping with mock innocence.
The rock you were standing on wasn't big enough to allow you to pull away from him without falling straight into the water, but you don’t hesitate as your jerk your body away, hoping to hide your flustered state and escape his proximity.
“It’s a little too late to feel sorry,” you hiss, not that you actually believe him. There was too much bad history between you to even consider it, especially with his behavior now.
He didn't reply, only watching the rise and fall of your back with interest. You had been the center of his attention for a while, but he had only recently realized it himself. He snaps out of his daze when he saw you turn to peer up at him through lowered lashes.
He felt his heart skip a beat as he watches you, the soft glow of the moon illuminating your features in a way that made his breath catch in his throat. The light of the moon seemed to know exactly how to make you look more beautiful than ever, and he found himself lost in the moment. Unconsciously, he parts his lips and he could feel the heat rising to his cheeks as he realized he was caught staring.
You call out his name, "Ao’nung?" as you notice him staring at you. Suddenly, without warning, he splashes water in your face, sending droplets flying everywhere. You frantically try to wipe the water from your face while simultaneously attempting to stop him, "Hey, stop it, skxawng!" you exclaim in annoyance.
Wiping the droplets off your face, you glower at him in frustration as he finally stops splashing water at you. "What's your problem?" you demand, your frown deepening when he simply shrugs with a smug expression.
What a dick!
“Thought you could improve your swimming skills.” He teases, walking towards you again.
Resisting the urge to punch him in the face was a skill, is what you wanted to say aloud. However, you were painfully reminded that he was the chief's son and, from past experiences with him and Lo'ak, you knew you didn't want a lecture from your father. As you turn to leave, Ao'nung grabs your wrist softly and yanks you towards him with the opposite force.
You yelp as you slam into his chest, ready to actually put your hands on him despite knowing you shouldn’t. But you pause after looking up, yellow hues staring into surprisingly serious blue.
They feel intense but warm, almost felt like how you wanted to curl into the one his body provided. It made your chest hurt, thumps wildly like a celebratory drum set. You wish it would stop, but it only intensifies when you catch a glimpse of his lips and watch as his tongue swipes across his bottom lip.
That was expressively hot, you had to admit, and it got even hotter when you looked back into his eyes, only to see them flick up from your lips at the last minute.
Being this close to him makes you feel weird. His stare suddenly feels too uncomfortable, making you look away and focus on other parts of his face, like the cute white freckles sprinkled across his nose and cheeks, or the smoothness of his skin. But then you stupidly let your eyes wander back to his lips, where you see them part again, this time with words.
“Som [Hot],” he says, confusion clouds your mind once more. But then, his words clear everything up, "You're Txasom [Very hot]." The way he says it, almost breathless, sends an another shiver down your spine.
"Ao'nung," you begin, but he cuts you off, releasing his grip on your wrist and sliding his hand to your hips, pulling you closer to him than before.
"I like you, siven," he confesses, his cheeks flushed to match yours. You stare up at him in awe, your heart out of control in your chest as you listen to his words, "I have for a while."
Your mind is in a whirlwind. You've yearned for him to apologize for his past mistreatment, but never once considered the possibility that he might have romantic feelings for you. You're unsure of what to feel, what to say, or what to do, and the uncertainty leaves you breathless.
“Say something,” he pleads, his gaze flicking back and forth between each eye, searching for a tell sign. He starts to fear that he may have made a mistake by opening up to you. Perhaps it would have been better to keep his admiration a secret, to continue to tease you playfully while keeping his feelings to himself.
You part your lips to speak, but no words come out. Instead, you close your mouth, pressing your lips tightly together as you struggle to process what's happening. How can Ao’nung, the chief's son who once teased you endlessly, have feelings for you?
“You’re a dick,” you murmur after a pregnant pause, looking off to the side. You miss the way his expression falters slightly before shifting to neutral, his hold on your hips gripping tighter as you continue, your voice getting firmer with each jab. “And an asshole who doesn’t know when to stop.”
“[Name]—“
“I’m not finished,” you quickly shut him down, staring him in the eyes now. “You teased my family because we were different. You teased me because I was too. You used your status as the chief's son to get away with it and I can’t forget that.”
Ao’nung's face contorts into a pained expression as he releases his grip on your hips. He feels a sense of regret wash over him as he thinks about how he shouldn't have let things go this far. He should have stopped himself earlier, before he decided to confess. Maybe if he had just left you alone when you first arrived, he wouldn't be feeling so heartbroken at this moment.
Ao'nung's expression transforms from sadness to hope as you grab his forearms before he could fully retreat. You notice how your words have affected him and wonder if he truly is genuine. "But it can be forgiven," you begin, watching as his brows raise and his ears perk up at your statement. "With work," you add, making sure he understands that it won't be easy.
His face lights up with the most winsome smile you've ever seen, and you can't help but laugh at his expression. He's more earnest, and it's endearing. As you look away shyly, he focuses on your laughter.
"I have a chance?" he asks hopeful, giving you a youthful, yearning expression. It's clear he wants to make things right between you.
Your nod of approval is all the permission he needs as he leans down to capture your lips in a frenzy of excitement. At first, the kiss is soft and tentative, but as you reciprocate, it quickly becomes more passionate and intense. You feel his hands grip your hips, pulling you closer to him as he deepens the kiss, leaving you breathless and wanting more.
When he finally pulls away, your eyes remain closed, trying to catch your breath and savor the moment. You can feel his eyes on you before you even open them, and when you do, you see his hand leaving your hips to rest on your cheek in adoration.
"I just need one chance," he whispers, pulling you back into a sinfully delicious kiss that makes your head spin and your heart race with desire.
You had an epiphany at 20: the line separating love and hate was indeed thin, and you found yourself straddling it frequently. But now, things have changed. You refuse to offer any apologies for the transition from hating Ao’nung to loving him.
