"I'm here!"

You quickly popped up from your position on the couch at the sound of Neteyam's voice, hastily opening the door.

"I missed you so much!"

Laughing, Neteyam walked into your dorm, placing the bag of sweets and your drink on the counter, opening his arms as an invitation for a hug. "I missed you too, weirdo."

"I was talking to the coffee," You teased, making your way over to the table when he punched your side gently, causing you to laugh. "You're pretty alright too, I guess." You feigned, finally accepting his hug.

"You guess? I buy you an amazing lunch and coffee, and this is how I'm repaid?"

"You get my presence, isn't that enough?"

"I suppose," he smiled your way, reaching into the bag and taking a handful of fries. "So, you're dating Ao'nung?"

"We went on one date," you corrected him, hoping he didn't notice the way your face went hot at the sudden question. "But yeah we're— whatever we are."

"You should be careful with him."

His words make you pause, looking up at him questioningly. "Sorry?"

"Be careful with him. I heard some things about him."

"Like?"

"Like dumb stuff. That's he's not really that into you and he's kind of a douche."

"Well, he's not." You stubbornly argued, shocked at the accusation of being used. Maybe you hadn't known him for the longest time, but Ao'nung wasn't the type of guy to pull something like that.

Right?

"Oh cmon, he's on baseball! He's a dude you haven't even known for over a month. He could be like that for all you know."

"Why the hell are you so adamant about this? He's not! And who even put that idea in your head?"

"I'm just telling you to be careful. And Violet— who by the way— is his ex, told me."

"Oh yes, that skimpy blonde you left me out in the rain for! And because exes are such a reliable source. How do you know she's not lying?"

"How do you know that she's not?"

"Why do you care so much?"

"I'm just trying to protect you!"

"I don't need protecting!" You snapped, hands falling to your side dramatically. "I can make my own decisions. And do you seriously believe Violet? You've known her for like what— a week?"

"Yeah, I do." He stated, jaw clenched. You scoffed at his behavior, and pushed the bag of food away from yourself.

"I really don't feel like fighting with you right now, so just take your food and leave, okay? Before either of us says something we regret." You left without another word into your room, not bothering to watch Neteyam leave your dorm.

it wasn't long after you sent the text that ao'nung showed up at your door, confusion clearly written across his face. his hair was messy, red pajama bottoms still worn, an old baseball tee covering his top.

you ignored his disheveled (and really attractive) appearance, remembering why you invited him over. you didn't bother inviting him inside, pissed at the idea that he would keep neteyam's apology from you. "who was at the door that night?"

ao'nung's eyes widened for a split second, before quickly recovering. "it wasn't any-"

"don't fucking lie to me!" you snapped, catching him off guard again. "tell me the truth, ao'nung."

he gulped, refusing to meet your eye. "neteyam was there," he paused, and for a moment you thought he wouldn't say anything else before he met your gaze, dropping his shoulders and rubbing a hand over his face. "he was there to apologize to you."

"why would you lie?" you sighed, exasperated, leaning against the doorway with your arms crossed.

"i don't really know, honestly," ao'nung admitted, his breath hitching for a moment. "i was jealous, i guess."

"you were jealous?" you questioned condescendingly, the boy cowering underneath your gaze. "you were jealous, so you figured you would just try and ruin a friendship between me and a guy i've known since i was 12?"

"he said those things about me, don't forget that!"

"i'm not taking that away from you!" you roared back, anger only rising when he raised his voice at you. "i get you're mad too, eywa, you have a right to be. he said shit about you, granted he chose to believe the wrong person, but he said it nevertheless. but you and me both know he did it out of caution for me, and i defended you anyways. i ignored him for over a week, only to find out just now he was trying to apologize this whole time just because you decided to keep it from me."

he was only quiet throughout your whole lecture, knowing you were right. ao'nung could've gave less of a shit about neteyam saying things about him, he just hated how close the two of you were, especially knowing how you felt about neteyam. he opened his mouth, knowing he was only digging a deeper hole for himself that he definitely wouldn't be able to drag himself out of, but you deserved nothing but the truth at this point. "i'm sorry, i'm so sorry y/n. it's just- i was being irrational. i know how you felt about him, so i kept it from you hoping you'd just move on-"

"do you realize how fucking dumb that sounds?" you cut him off, steam practically blowing out of your ears. "feelings or not for neteyam, he's still my best friend. you don't get to decide shit for me," you argued, standing straight up now. "just get out of here ao'nung, before you make things worse."

you didn't give him a chance to reply before shutting the door on him.

neteyam made his way over to your dorm, trying not to get a speeding ticket in the process.

his mind was racing as he tried to focus on the road. never in a million years would he think he still had a chance after all this time, after he made the dumbest decision in his life and let you go. he berated himself on it every waking day, praying to eywa you'd take him back.

he found a parking spot, not caring if he had parked horribly and pissed some other student who lived in your dorm building off. he ran up the stairs, figuring the elevator would take too long. he sprinted to the door he'd knocked on thousands of times, out of breath by the time he arrived.

only to be met with ao'nung.

"hi." ao'nung was the first to speak, making no move to let neteyam inside. the door was just slightly opened, with him blocking neteyam's view from the outside.

"uhm, hi," he dryly responded, trying to look inside. "is she-"

wordlessly answering his unfinished question, the door was opened to reveal a sleeping you, a soft smile making it's way to neteyam's face at how peaceful you looked.

"are you here to apologize?"

the other boys voice snapped him out of his trance, and he nodded in response. "she's sleeping, so i don't wanna wake her or anything," neteyam paused, suddenly not feeling so confident anymore. "just— can you let her know that i came? i'm ready to talk whenever she is, she can take her time."

"yeah, don't worry, i'll let her know." ao'nung quietly replied, the two bidding a farewell before he closed the door, making his way back to the couch. you had started to stir, hearing the door close, not seeing who was standing in the other side.

"who was that?" you croaked, trying to rub the sleep out of your eyes.

ao'nung hesitated, knowing it wasn't his place to reveal anything other than the truth, but instead laid back on the couch, grabbing his blanket.

"it was no one."

you really felt like you were out of options.

in a hurry, you'd left your dorm key in tsireya's car, and you knew your roommate wasn't home.

which led you here.

unsure of where else to go, and not wanting to face your problems just yet, you knocked on the door, gulping nervously.

within seconds, the door opened, revealing a slightly confused spider, his wide grin quickly turning into a look of concern.

"hey, hey, hey," he shushes carefully, taking you into his arms without question and walking you into his room. "what's wrong?"

incoherently, you shake your head as a string of cries leave your mouth, only causing his panic to rise. "it's just- just like," you hiccup, head comfortingly rested against his chest. "how can you fake something for so long?"

"woah, honey," he coaxes, hand softly petting the back of your head. "slow down, okay? what's this all about?"

"ao'nung," you sniffle, and spider clenches his jaw at the name. "none of it was real. it was all a bet."

you hear a long sigh from above you, one of disapproval. "eywa, get a load of this guy."

"he told me he loved me."

at the words, you can feel him slightly tense up as he keeps you in his hold. "do.. do you believe him?"

for a few moments you stay silent, swimming in your own thoughts. you have no reason to believe him, it most likely being some act of saving grace.

"is it bad that i do?"

"i'm starting to think we're both developing a really bad caffeine addiction." tsireya speaks up as you guys decide to enter the cafe, ordering your drinks and sitting down.

"speak for yourself, i already had one to begin with." you retort, and your head snaps to the doors of the cafe that ring when someone enters. a frown immediately crosses your face when you realize it's ao'nung.

"i know he's my brother and all," tsireya starts, seeing him and putting two and two together. "but you deserve to be happy. with or without him."

"yeah," you grin softly, knowing she was right when out of the blue somebody slides into the booth next to you. "hello?"

"did you and ao'nung break up or something?" a boy asks you, and you're vaguely able to remember him as someone from the baseball team.

"i'm sorry, who even are you?" you scoff, not able to put a name to the man sitting beside you.

"teammate of ao'nung's," he informs you, throwing his arm to rest on the back of a chair. "he's been in a shitty mood the past two weeks. you guys finally break up or something?"

you open your mouth, partially in shock and partially in offense, because what does he mean, finally?

"i wouldn't even call it a break up, i mean-" you cut yourself off, shaking your head. it definitely wasn't some strangers business to be sniffing into your love life. "whatever. yeah, sure."

"so he finally told you, then?"

"told her what?" tsireya pipes in, and you suddenly remember she's been sitting in front of you the whole time.

"about the bet."

— one of ao'nung's teammates is genuinely concerned so he approaches y/n in the cafe to figure out what was wrong

"something tells me you got ditched from your own plans?"

you look up from your phone, face lighting up the moment you see ao'nung. you're not sure why you're so excited to see him— considering you just saw him the day before, but you run up and hug him, his arms pulling you in tight.

"what did that idiot do?" his tone is teasing, but you're almost sure there's a hint of annoyance in there as well. you let yourself believe the cause is you being left alone.

"just got excited to be with his crush, is all," you chuckle, motioning over to the two talking animatedly in a booth. "they didn't really ditch me, i kind of told them to go over and talk, and that i had some work to do on my own."

"playing matchmaker, i see," he nods, grip loosening but yet to let you go. "okay cupid, looks like you're stuck with me." ao'nung grins, and your heart melts at the sight.

"how'd i get so unlucky?" the witty replies are all you have left to try and prove you aren't as smitten as you seem, but he knows better.

"you're actually pretty lucky, thank you very much," he scoffs, rolling his eyes. he then holds his arm out, waiting for you to take it. "c'mon, i know a place."

"beginning to sound like an axe murderer." you joke, but take his arm anyways, coffee in the other hand, following him.

"i mean, i do know where you live." he plays along.

"quite the charmer, you are," you laugh, thanking him as he opens his car door for you. "but really, where are you taking me?"

"into town. a little birdy told me you liked shopping." ao'nung finally shares, casting a sweet smile your way.

and as he drives you two there he can feel his defenses starting to slip, and realizing just how often he's starting to smile around you, or how fond he's been of your company lately.

he has to convince himself it's all just apart of the act.

FUN FACTS !

— ao'nung wouldn't let y/n buy a single thing with her own money

— right after y/n held the flowers she sneezed like crazy so ao'nung (discreetly) bought some allergy medicine for her

— ao'nung friends just so happened to be out into town and saw y/n and ao'nung

"c'mon, deep breaths." lo'ak coaxed you out of your meltdown, his hand softly rubbing up and down your arm.

spider was sat down behind you, you laying back against him and between his legs. he didn't say much, but his arms wrapping around you and head on top of yours for comfort said enough.

"what happened?" lo'ak spoke again, voice still soft. rotxo was sat down beside him, phone now tucked away safely in his back pocket.

"it's- it's so stupid," you start slowly, afraid of your voice cracking. "i saw her— and she was nothing short of perfect. i guess i just got insecure or whatever and- it all came back, you know?"

"it's not stupid," spider was the one to speak up this time. "you're allowed to get insecure, and you haven't seen ivy in forever. of course the first time you see her it's gonna bring up some strong emotions."

"he's right," rotxo smiled at you, agreeing. "i might not know the whole story, but your emotions aren't stupid. and if you need to cry it all out with a tub of ice cream then so be it."

"thanks guys," you sniffle, a soft smile finally reaching your face. "i don't know what i'd do without you."

the boys all reassured you, comforting you the rest of the night.

but rotxo couldn't help the sick feeling in his gut, knowing what was to come.

chapter seven. trapped.

you prepared yourself to walk outside the room, peeking through the window to see ao'nung walking up to your doorstep.

you hurriedly moved behind the door, no longer visible to whoever was standing on the other side of the door. even when he knocked you didn't move, unsure of what to do.

what were you thinking? agreeing to go on a date with a man you've known for just over a week, barely knowing anything about him besides he was your friends brother and an athlete. it makes complete sense that you could be a rebound, you have no knowledge of his dating history.

the louder pounding on the door grabs your attention, and you gulp down your fears, deciding to open the door and are met with a grinning ao'nung, and for a moment you almost push all the warning signs to the side.

"was beginning to think you were gonna stand me up." he laughs, and you give a small smile in response.

as if i would be the one to stand you up. you think to yourself, gesturing for him to come in, which he happily obliges to.

"can we talk?"

your concerned tone has him spinning on his heel to look at you, a somewhat distressed look on his face. "yeah, what's wrong?"

you fall for the faux concern, falling into a false sense of comfort with the boy. "am— am i your rebound?"

the question catches him off guard, and he makes a face at the accusation. "no... why do you ask?" he counters, with a question of his own.

"lo'ak told me about ivy."

the single sentence is enough for him to understand what you mean, and he almost slips up.

almost.

but he plays it off like a pro, shrugging her name off as if it never meant a thing to him in his whole entire life. "an old flame. it was months ago, y/n. trust me when i say, you have nothing to do with her. i asked you out because i wanted to, not because i'm trying to use you." to emphasize his point, he takes your hand in his, holding eye contact with you his whole spiel.

the string of lies fall so easily off his tongue, and they're carefully crafted into an intricate web of deception that you fall into more easily than expected. you don't know it, but you're his prey, and he has you right where he wants you.

"you really mean it?" your eyes are bright, filled with a hopeful ray of light.

a light that's shining so bright it makes you blind to how masked behind his gentle smile is a cunning smirk, knowing he has you trapped.

"of course i do, sweetheart."
