This is gonna sound weird but ur like the only writer that seems to have their shit together re Hollow Knight, but how would you characterize the Hollow Knight? Fandom consensus is something akin to "overgrown innocent child must protect" but yk fandom and hunter's journal mentions they're fully grown? ik hollow knight is just piecemeal so its all up to interpretation but still. confusion!
Ahshs I'm not sure if I'm the *only* competent writer in the fandom- there are lots of other people out there who are just as passionate and into the lore of Hollow Knight as I am, but have different interpretations that fit well within the canon story and are just as acceptable as my own. Unless you're just talking about my writing period, in which I regretfully must inform you that Until Dawn Shall Break is the only fic I have ever written that I actually did an outline for and is the only longform fic that I see myself finishing. I'm not exactly the most competent writer either, I'm just figuring shit out as I go.
But yeah you kind of hit a personal pet peeve of mine, which is the depiction of the Hollow Knight. I do not mean to insult or belittle anyone with trauma that involves age regression and/or a retreat to a more childish state of mind to reconnect with a past they were denied or found comfort in, or belittle anyone who needs high levels of outside care, but the fandom consensus of treating Hollow like an overgrown, innocent baby who was done wrong and needs to be protected and/or cared for is...bad. It's really fucking bad. Maybe this is my personal experience as an autistic adult speaking, but infantilizing someone is essentially the exact same deal as treating them like an empty, unthinking corpse like they were in canon, simply with a level of sugarcoating on it to make it more bearable to the fandom. Infantilization is an abuse tactic. It's a means of enacting control over someone by dismissing their own ability to make choices for themselves and replacing it with what you think is best for them- essentially controlling their life for what you believe is 'their own good'. It isn't helping someone, its seizing total control over their own life because you do not deem them 'mature' enough to make their own choices. It's a major problem with neurodivergent/disabled people and it is ESPECIALLY prevalent among mute/silent individuals because for some reason, language and articulation is associated with maturity and intelligence. It's a lack of respect and a statement of power, and it's alarming as hell to see it placed upon the vessels, given that they are shown to not only capable of taking care of themselves, but are also robbed of their autonomy by virtue of being voidborn. They cannot voice their suffering. They were believed to be animated corpses. And treating the Pure Vessel itself- a vessel reared to full adulthood and a god in their own right who spent an uncountless number of years in an agonizing battle of will against a genocidal god thousands of years their senior, who knew the stakes of failure and likely bears that weight on their ruined shoulders- as an innocent child? Inexcusable. Their lack of a voice does not mean that they should be treated with a lack of respect.
(This is also a major issue with animalkeeping and pet training, which is another thing I am very passionate about, but since comparing animals and people has somehow wound up being a bad thing, I'll leave this tangent here. Just know that this is a universal problem among any living being, not just people specifically.)
((Hell, I even see it as a problem with human juveniles specifically, because the whole reason why we protect, care for, and impose strict regulations on children is because they are new to the world and require proper guidance and role modeling. It should be phased out more and more the older a child gets, as soon as it becomes apparent that they do not need as much guidance on a task as they did before. Offering aid should be done from a position of respect and consideration, not one of dismissal.))
And we *know* that the Hollow Knight is an adult, because as you said, it is outright stated in canon that they have been raised to their prime form, aka their adult moult. Which, if we're getting biotechnical here, means that their body-which is very different from Little Ghost's- has physically matured as well as mentally, given that insects reach sexual maturation on their final adult moult. The body and hormones are just as important to development as time is, which is why despite being from the same clutch, the Hollow Knight and Little Ghost are an adult and child respectively. While both have been around the same amount of time, the Hollow Knight has physically and mentally aged, while Little Ghost is still physically (and likely mentally) a child. Stunting is, of course, likely due to access to resources over time- real insects become developmentally stunted if they lack enough nutrients irl, and Ghost led a very different life than the Hollow Knight- but the point still stands that the Hollow Knight is an adult, and should be treated as one. Even if they lack life experience and require extensive care post-Radiance, they are still physically and mentally an adult, and that means they should be treated as one. If you want to write them as returning to childish urges that they never were allowed to indulge in- that's great! Do that. If you want to write or depict them as being intensely animalistic in some regards- again, that's great! They're not human and they sure as fuck aren't a bug, no reason they won't act like that, esp. in the grips of agony. But remember that they are an adult, they have seen far more shit than you have, and that they deserve to be treated with the same level of respect that you'd give any war veteran. Needing more care =/= stripping them of respect. And honestly, given what we've seen of them in game, I don't think they're an overgrown innocent child at all.
But anyways, now that that tangent is over, it's time to get to what you were actually asking for- how I characterize the Hollow Knight. And it's complicated, but I'll try to sum it up as best as I can:
Autistic young adult who was a gifted child growing up but now suffers from severe burnout and suicidal depression, magnified by an abusively strict childhood and an emotionally unavailable family. Specific autism flavor is hyperempathy and sociability paired with extreme masking. Extremely mature in some areas (such as certain areas of problem solving and self-discipline), but extremely deficient in some areas because of aformentioned family issues. Genderless, but gives off the vibes of a transfem egg who is the family's favorite 'son'. Also they're a hyperpredator with the body of a xenomorph, power over nothingness itself, and have both the will, skill and resolve to kill god. Their passivity is the only thing saving you.
That summary was a lot longer than I anticipated.
But yeah, I basically see Hollow as someone who is extremely quiet, reserved, and 'mature' by nature, which is what allowed them to pass as the Pure Vessel where Little Ghost wouldn't (it's not just their anxiety- they're really just that quiet). They've got an innate protective streak a mile wide, which was partially what inspired them to become and stay the Pure Vessel, though their desire to end the suffering of both their siblings and the Radiance was admittedly overshadowed by their childish desire to be loved by their father, which is a guilt that haunts them to this day. They're also stubborn as hell, which is why they resisted the Radiance so long, and they have hyperempathy, which motivated them to try to stay pure to save the people of Hallownest & understand their father's motives and regrets, giving him far more sympathy and understanding than he deserved. They're a sensitive soul, one that adores children and loves to watch the lives of people from afar, but that protective instinct will lead them to rend others apart and kill without mercy if they have been given leave to do so (or feel that it is necessary to achieve their goal). They are hyperintelligent and excellent at reading body language, but a mix of synthesia, void logic, and their childhood has left them terrible at understanding their own emotions. They have an old soul and a cutting mind that allowed them to learn reading and complex mathematics on their own, but have the anxiety and insecurity of any young adult who's been sheltered for far too long to help themselves. Their patience is outstanding and their temper is long-burning, but once it's been worn thin, there's no going back, and they *will* hold a grudge unless actions are done to mollify them. While young compared to the others, they are an extremely powerful fully-ascended god with an oft-overlooked aspect that has all the territoriality and possessiveness to make deadly use of it. They also inherited their father's depression and complete lack of care for their physical form as long as it keeps their loved ones safe, which means that they are terrifying on the battlefield. They are also aware of how terrifying they are to others, and while they do not enjoy it, they will exploit it if necessary. In terms of hobbies, they have an extreme soft spot for romance novels/plays (despite being aroace), music, burrowing/nesting, caring for their family and people, playfighting, hunting, and meditating, which is often how they align with their aspect and passed the time in the White Palace. Speechwise, they are one of few words, and prefer not to sign, gesture, or write at all if they have to, simply working off of the void and their own body language to engage (if they even do so). Silent, vibrating vocalizations such as rumbling, purring, sigh/huffing, and clacking their mandibles is common.
Once healed, their body throws them into voracious heat cycles (courtesy of their mom and love for children), but they are terrified of becoming a parent or having children of their own, which makes it a stressful occurrence that they dread, but don't know how to fully get rid of. Post-Radiance, they are prone to having days where they lapse into total inactivity both mentally and physically, requiring external care before they return from the dissociative state they fell into. Chronic pain days are also often a major issue, and while they can technically induce a moult to heal their carapace and regrow their arm, the trauma-pain paired with the feeling that they don't deserve it is what prevents them from doing so. Their relationship with their father is a unique place of hurt, guilt, loss, and love, and should not be touched on. They barely saw the White Lady as a child, and while they long for their mother's approval, they also get the impression that she cannot stand them (due to either grief, hatred, or guilt, and so stays away). They are a god of broken people, and while they are comfortable in this position and accept their prayers, they never, *ever* want to be king. They love both their little sister Hornet and Ghost dearly, and have an absurd amount of guilt over abandoning Ghost in the Abyss, but they still retain the Cain instinct and will bite them if they cause problems, and would give Hornet very disappointed stares or purposeful pokes if she was being rude or unfair. They have a very courtly air and an expectation of mannerly behavior, even if they themselves never got to be called prince.
But that's all my personal interpretations of them, not canon.

There’s something so compelling to me about Jon being isolated completely… not even in the “ostracized and hated” sense (which is also delicious to be clear) but in the “no human contact ever” kind of way. And I want someone to do this to him deliberately also. I want Jon to work in the archives without assistants ever. Completely alone because Elias put him there and didn’t give him assistants. I want to put him in a box and poke tiny holes in the lid and then put the box on a very high shelf where nobody can reach and see what happens to him.

Here is your prompt to get you to speak your lovesong-related thoughts aloud! [and also a notice that I may fall asleep very soon and not see them until later if you answer this tonight ehe]
@cookies-over-yonder also asked me abt my lovesong thoughts so I'm just gonna put it all here lmao
ah ok SO !! the first thing you need to know about me is that Terry/Nick/Sparrow is literally everything to me . I have never once mentioned them or drawn them unless you count me having drawn fanart for every 2 person pairing within this throuple lmao - so if this turns into polycule thoughts I'm sorry (I am not) anyways <3 Nick and sparrow ! methinks they are one of the more healthy relationships within the many kiddad ships , but ah . that's not saying much seeing as . the kiddads are . like that . anyways , my hc for how they got together is kinda that Terry set them up in the way that Terry is just the person the majority of the kiddads tell all their shit to , so obv both Nick and sparrow told terry all about their crushes on each other and the entire time terry just sits there like uh huh . oh you don't think he likes you back ? hm . okay . that's a thought . but both of the other two are too invested in lamenting abt their crushes that they absolutely do not sense anything weird about Terry's very obvious and deadpan responses . meanwhile both of them have crushes on Terry 200% and have absolutely talked to each other about how attractive Terry is so both of them assume the other *just* likes Terry and therefore they have no chance . bcs wow I like both of them , but what are even the chances that he likes both of us too ??? bcs they are all so silly stupid and are too busy crushing on not one but *two* of their best friends to notice that literally so is everyone . anyways . Nick and Sparrow . transfem sparrow my beloved , and transmasc Nick is canon (to ME) so t4t for the win <3 anyways , I think when Terry finally gets fed up with being the middle man between the two of them he just brings both of them over by texting both of them that the other has smthin to tell them . bcs it'd be silly . followed immediately by them both then being like wait Terry come back . now we both have smthin to tell *you* . anyways . Nick and Sparrow are just very soft w each other (until they're not if ya know what I mean) but I think Nick when hes w sparrow just becomes the most romantic guy to ever exist bcs hes realized that sparrow loves all those silly little romantic things like Nick gets her flowers all the time bcs he can see her face light up as she goes to find a vase . he sees her blush and grin fondly at him when he holds the door open for her . he loves the way she pulls him into her lap and kisses his face when he gets her a new dress to match the button up he just got . just cute shit like that . also I think (obv) that sparrow is v big on showing love via physical affection , esp with Nick , partly bcs he's her partner and partly just because of how flustered it makes him , no matter how small the touch . she could just casually grab his hand while they're walking somewhere and Nick will just immediately look up at her like 😳 anyways running out of rail on this extended train of thought and don't know what to keep talking abt so that's all folks until someone asks me abt them again sndnndmd

show us your oc lore!!
I'm so sorry but it's exclusively my Splatoon OCs
Tumblr media
I'm not at ALL confident in how legible this is, but this is my Web Of Lesbianism(tm), AKA how (almost) all of my lesbian sploon OCs connect to each other, excluding a few who only connect in small places and/or I don't feel like making icons for. Sorry to Scarlet, who absolutely warrants a place here, but I simply Do Not Want to make an icon for </3
Lore under the readmore because I get extremely rambly. whoops and apologies and this is probably the only time i'll ever let myself get THIS infodump-y in a Tumblr post. I'm writing this after I wrote it all out and I'm so fucking sorry it's literally over 2k words because I have no ability to stop once I've started and I've been outright POSSESSED by these losers for the past month. Here's basically everything about my Splatoon OCs
FOR NAMES. Top right is Basil (Blue tentacles), middle right is Penny (Her name is just written because I haven't drawn her yet), bottom right is June (Pink tentacles), bottom middle is Jake (Blue tentacles), bottom left is Parker (Purple tentacles, also the sanitized icon), middle left is Ruby (Orange tentacles), and top left is May (Pink tentacles)
Everything starts when May, Jake, and Ruby are all around ~16-17, while June, May's little sister, is around ~9. May is VERY into Jake, and Jake's just generally a big flirt and a huge romantic, though it's unsure if he really realizes May's extremely obvious crush on him (He doesn't), or he reciprocates, which is unfortunate, because Ruby, who's May's childhood best friend, is also very into her, but May doesn't realize this. When [UNDECIDED EVENT] happens and May and Jake both come to the realization they need to head to the surface to escape the oppressive Octarian domes, Ruby being with them is very clearly an afterthought, and she knows it. So, her jealousy over Jake being someone May has known for less time yet clearly loves more than her, and the fact that trying to escape being very, very illegal, she turns them both in.
Jake manages to call May before he's caught to warn her that Ruby turned them in and the cops will already be heading to her parents house, which gives May enough time to run home, grab June, and make a run for it. Both May and Jake manage to outrun the cops, with May and June ending up far into the outskirts of the domes, while Jake only gets further and deeper within them.
Around a month or two after their initial escape, May's spotted by a patrol of soldiers stationed right around the way to the surface, with the soldier who spots her specifically being Scarlet, the oldest sister to Ruby (Who's not featured here because I don't want to make her icon), who remembers May from when she was a kid and, alongside that, has been feeling disillusioned with life as a soldier, despite her high ranking, and decides not only to let May go, but to even share rations with her. This only increases as Scarlet realizes May is the runaway who's known to have a young child with her, and it goes from Scarlet sparing her own rations to stealing rations from the squad she leads to make sure both May and June are able to eat properly.
Of course, this doesn't last long, as Crimson, the middle sister to Scarlet and Ruby, and fellow soldier stationed with Scarlet's squad, gets suspicious of the missing rations, Scarlet's dismissal of the issue, and her wandering off frequently, and ends up following her and finds her giving the stolen rations to May. A fight breaks out between the two, with Crimson managing to nearly take Scarlet's eye out in the process, as Scarlet's the only person ever to bring a gun to a knife fight and lose. May booked it the MOMENT Crimson jumped out, so she's long gone by the time the scuffle ends, but Scarlet, having just been caught stealing rations, aiding a runaway, and now attacking a fellow soldier (Even if in self defense), bolts to try and make it to the surface as well, albeit she doesn't know where May ran off to.
May ends up making it to the surface around a month after that incident, after wandering lost for the time between, and, while struggling to try and buy some clothes thanks to the language barrier between her and the commonly spoken languages of the surface, one of the employees working there, Penny, is able to help figure out what May's looking for, and helps her with the whole process, since it's a lot different from how it was in the domes. They don't end up seeing each other after that for around a year, but it's important when they do, as Penny's was the first person on the surface May really had a good experience with, so when they randomly run into each other, May's very happy to be able to tell her how meaningful that was to her, and that she's much more adjusted to the culture and language now.
Meanwhile, Jake! Jake ends up wandering deep within the domes, far away from where the actual settlements and cities are, for over a year, just barely surviving through scavenging and avoiding patrolling soldiers. Still, he's not great at it, and eventually he ends up being held at gunpoint by Parker, who insists he tell her his rank and what he's doing out here. He has no idea, as he was never in the military and lies through his teeth. Luckily for him, Parker is a military deserter, and would've had a much worse reaction had she believed him, instead realizing that he's not a soldier and has no idea what he's talking about. Parker's been hiding out in the area, an abandoned sewer system that's frequented as a supply route for soldiers, for several months at this point, and while she actually enjoys her life of living down there, it's a lot of work to survive on her own, and realizing Jake's a fugitive also means he's a potential survival partner.
The two end up meeting up once every day for around a week before Parker feels confident enough that Jake isn't going to screw her over or try and turn her in or anything, and invites him to live with her at her "apartment", an old maintenance closet that's very secluded and not marked on any military maps, under the agreement that the two of them actually work together. Jake instantly agrees because he's been miserable and awful for the past year, while Parker's doing surprisingly well for herself, she even has multiple sets of clothes that she's stolen from nearby outposts (As well as an entire mattress she stole, and her most prized possession, a full deck of playing cards, and an Octo Shot she definitely killed a man for), as opposed to Jake, who's been going off of only what he had on him when everything went down, which is... practically nothing.
The plot basically slows down and chills out here for a while, May and June end up moving in with Penny after a few months of May and Penny hanging out instead of having to live in the shitty motel they'd been living in before (Albeit, the motel was better than the wilds they'd been living in before that), and Parker and Jake get adjusted to their lives in hiding surprisingly well. May and Scarlet even find each other on the surface again, they run into each other while May's out grocery shopping, and it's a very important moment for the both of them, as they've spent this entire time carrying around the guilt of feeling responsible for what happened, so them seeing the other and seeing how much better they're doing on the surface helps ease those guilts.
And then the events of Octo Expansion happen in the background. Parker and Jake know the routines of the soldiers in the area after years of living together, but the supply lines end up being used by sanitized Octoling soldiers after Kamabo starts massively ramping up production, leading to patrols of sanitized soldiers at seemingly random intervals, and outside of the predictable patterns that Parker and Jake were used to. Parker's out doing the laundry when a patrol finds her, and, greatly outnumbering her, end up nearly killing her, and dragging her back to be sanitized. She's in too bad of condition to be saved and reused as a test subject, so she's just sanitized instead.
Jake, naturally, notices when Parker never comes back from doing the laundry, and proceeds to be missing for upwards of two weeks. Jake does his best to look for her, but he also doesn't want to stray too far from their "apartment", as he's scared she might return home when he's gone, and with the unpredictable patrols, he doesn't feel like it's safe to stay out for as long as he wants to to look for her, so he ends up sticking close to home and just hoping he'll be able to find some clue of her. Of course, when he finally does, finally spotting her hanging around the entrance to the hallways that lead to their apartment, it's Not a good thing. He runs up to her to ask where she's been, and the moment he calls for her she turns and attacks him. It's not even a fair fight, even if he went in expecting a fight, he wouldn't have won, but this was a complete surprise. She quickly attacks him and takes him back to be put into the metro as a test subject, and, since he was brought back in much better shape than she was, he actually can be salvaged as a test subject!
And then he isn't. He's in the process of being readied as a test subject, namely, having his memories messed with, that the entire plot of Octo Expansion actually happens, and he's freed when the entire facility shuts down, and the metro is just a normal transport system again. He ends up wandering around for another month or so, except doing so very poorly, as the effects that being prepped to be a test subject had on his memory is bad, and basically erased all of his knowledge on how to survive on his own. Eventually, and luckily for him, he's found by one of the rescue teams that have been sent out in the aftermath of Octo Expansion to rescue lost and sanitized Octolings, and FINALLY gets brought to the surface, as well as being hospitalized for a whole myriad of problems, mainly being severely dehydrated from not remembering safe ways to find and gather water reliably.
When he's ready to be discharged, he realizes he has really nowhere to go, but since he still remembers May's phone number from when they were kids (As it's been years at this point, May and Jake are both in their mid 20s now, and June's around ~17), and calls her to ask if she can come pick him up and also if he can crash at her place for a bit. May is more than a bit surprised that her childhood friend she was fairly convinced had died years ago, and that she feels guilty for abandoning, is not only still alive, but super casual and chill just. Calling her cell and asking if he can sleep on her couch. At this point, June's already moved out, having been encouraged by both May and Penny to get out on her own and try getting out of her comfort zone, and is living in Splatsville with her roommate Basil, and not really having any major plot moments of her own. She's having fun and coming out of her shell and having silly lesbian shenanigans with her roommate in the background while Jake and May are experiencing the horrors.
Ultimately, this is about where thing stop being decided and I still need to figure out what happens next. Jake is living on May and Penny's couch (The universe will never let them have their house to themselves. Not even 3 months after June moves out, Jake's crashing on their couch), and has no memory of his time with Parker, Parker's MIA and potentially dead, and May's struggling with the idea that Jake's either in denial of some major trauma he must've faced through the years, or that she's somehow uniquely fucked up from what happened to them. To make matters worse, Jake's memory issues become more and more apparent, as he continues to struggle to remember Penny's name, instead repeatedly calling her "Parker", yet getting confused when he's corrected. I'm ultimately unsure what I'm going to do to resolve this plot thread, but May and Penny do realize that whoever Parker was, she was someone Jake knew in the time he was missing, and are trying to figure out just exactly who she was, if not where she actually is
Whether or not Parker is dead... it's up in the air. I initially planned for her to die and stay dead, but I'm the worlds biggest sap and I feel bad about killing her off permanently, as well as the fact I have plenty of silly ideas for what I could do with Parker once she's on the surface, so I'm still debating if it's more narratively satisfying for her to die or not. There's, if you believe it, actually a ton I'm glossing over (The intricacies of Jake and Parker's dynamic, the reasons why Parker left, basically everything about Basil and June, literally Basil has an entire friend group that has their own mini-plot that's not at all connected to this and doesn't get mentioned, Crimson is going to be more relevant once I figure out what I want to do with her, ect), but uh. That's the very long gist of it.
If anyone actually, genuinely reads through all of this. Thank you, apologies, and I love you

strawhats and bending elements for this au:
Luffy - water
Zoro - earth
Nami - water
Usopp - fire
Sanji - earth
Chopper - non-bender (reindeer)
Robin - non-bender
Franky - non-bender
Brook - air
Jinbei - non-bender (fishman)
little bit more explanation under the cut
Luffy
my man cannot turn water into ice or fog and doesn't have the strongest control in the world, but in terms of raw power? pretty fucking strong
to be clear, he can manipulate ice, fog, snow, etc. but he can't alter whatever form it's already in. Nami gets a headache if she thinks about it too long
learned a little bit of waterbending from Shanks, but never really had a teacher
Zoro
strong earthbender with much better control than Luffy
can only bend earth
metal, sand, gems- nothing. he is very much a one trick rock pony
he only learned the basics from his village's earthbending teacher and devoted a majority to his time to swordsmanship so. yeah
Zoro doesn't even know what the hell sandbending is until they get to Alabasta
Nami
one of the few strawhats to have a formal teacher and learn more than the basics
Bellemere was a great teacher. but. yknow.
Nami learned most of what she knows from waterbending books and scrolls that she stole over the years from other pirates and rich people. And she's learned a lot compared to the other strawhats.
To keep this brief-ish, she's practically a master at waterbending, save for healing. For the life of her, she couldn't really get the hang of it and none of the scrolls or books she had picked up over the years were at all helpful in explaining it. She's still working on it.
The unfortunate part of this is, while she has great control and precision over her bending, her power is... lacking. Which is where the 'practically a master' vs. 'an actual master' distinction becomes important lol
Due to amazing forethought, Nami is perceived by the outside world as a non-bender. Even some of her enemies think she's a non-bender. Nami really doesn't want people to know how good she is at waterbending because that would make her more of a threat and her pretty little heart wouldn't be able to take it if her bounty increased, Robin, so could you do her a big favour-
Usopp
christ where do i begin
the only firebender in Syrup Village. Yasopp is a known pirate and firebender.
Usopp never had a firebending teacher. He did, however, have ample amounts of earth and water benders to watch from afar. He taught himself bending, in a way that works for him. It is far from traditional firebending, but hey it works.
Somewhere along the line- maybe around Loguetown or after- he learns that firebenders really can shoot lightning and it wasn't just a myth. He blows himself up a lot trying to create it on his own before some lady on an island they stop at explains the right way to do it and demonstrates. Usopp still blows himself up, but now his form is correct.
While the other strawhats tend to weave their bending into their fighting styles somehow- or at least use it to aid them in battle from time to time, like with a boost into the air via rock- Usopp never uses his bending in a fight. He likes his bending and all, but he's the sniper and he has a bag of explosives on him so uh. No.
one day, post-Wano, Usopp has a really good day before bending practice and accidentally discovers his ability to combustion bend. He doesn't know it's combustion bending though, because all that comes out are little sparks of fire, like a sparkler. No one else knows either and he just uses it as a party trick.
Sanji
dear god this one is gonna be. AA.
all of the Vinsmokes are earthbenders. Sora is not. Sanji is.
After escaping onto the Orbit, Sanji decided the best way to never be found again would be to never bend again. Ever. (also because those 3 bastards and Judge were earthbenders and Sanji hated them)
He had an earthbending teacher, but anything that wasn't a superhuman feat was deemed a failure so Sanji never actually learned shit from that teacher. He also just wanted to cook all the time, so he never practiced.
Point is, when he's stuck on that rock with Zeff, he has the power and control to lift a rock, but nothing heavier than something he could physically carry himself.
Zeff is a non-bender. While the Baratie has it's fair share of benders, Sanji is Zeff's son and when Zeff offered to teach him how to fight one day, what was Sanji to do other than accept?
Sanji never told Zeff he was an earthbender, but he had a feeling Zeff knew anyway.
Sanji never told his crew he was an earthbender either. This was less of him actively hiding it and more out of habit. He loved them, but he didn't really see a need to explain it to them when it didn't matter. He wouldn't see his 'family' again and he could fight just fine without it anyway-
[Whole Cake]
Sanji: Hm. Hm™
He reveals he's an earthbender post-WCI. Zoro forces him to learn the basics and also adamantly insists that he knew the truth the whole time (he didn't. he's embarrassed). Zoro starts saying some super smug stuff now, like "is that any way to talk to your teacher?" and related lines. Think Zoro's thing about ranking and always insisting he's above Sanji and now that he's got the opportunity, he's gonna enjoy every moment.
(He's also gonna have some kind of earthbending specialty, but I haven't decided yet. Leaning towards metalbender though.)
Sanji faces the firebender rumours instead of Usopp. Both of them are incensed by this bc Sanji wants people to think he's a non-bender still (connection to Zeff) and Usopp is just mad people don't think he's a firebender (quite literally his own fault).
Chopper
always thought bending was cool even if he couldn't do it
Doctor Hiriluk was a non-bender too. Sometimes the two of them would talk and make up impossible scenarios that benders might do and laugh their heads off.
Doctor Kureha is an earth bender. She isn't a metalbender, but everyone besides Chopper thinks she is.
Robin
she comes from a long line of waterbenders, but she and her mother were both non-benders.
The scholars on Ohara were benders of all types and specialties. Fire, Earth, Water, Air all living in harmony and all that. Real shame. Anyway.
Because of Nami's "i'm totally a non-bender teehee" scheme, Robin has become the "strawhat's waterbending witch" that some people spread rumours about. The gist is that Nami begged her to help and Robin thought it'd be fun. Misleading people with her ability and those rumours never gets old.
Franky
non-bender in a family of 1) a fishman, 2) a mermaid, and 3) Iceburg (annoying waterbender his age)
Water 7 is known for a majority of their people being waterbenders. The Franky Family is mostly made up of non-water benders.
Franky didn't really care about figuring out bending as much when he was younger and after the Sea Train incident and he built himself back up, he couldn't bend a thing. He doesn't really know if he just fucked himself up hard enough he couldn't bend anymore or if he never could bend in the first place. He doesn't really care though, too busy being Super!
A lot of outsiders think Franky is an earthbender, specifically a metalbender, because of his whole cyborg thing. Also the no shoes thing. After joining the strawhats, the metalbender thing sort of holds up, especially post-timeskip with his General Franky.
There are also groups of people who are like "this guy is from Water 7, are you kidding? he's a waterbender for sure." They also point to the fact that he's always wearing a speedo and thus always ready to get wet.
The rumours are pretty funny to listen to and he and Robin love to just hang out on an island incognito (or as much as Franky is capable) and just listen to rumours about themselves and laugh about it. They share what they hear with the crew too.
Brook
he doesn't use his bending often, but there are occasions; can do loads of funny little tricks that he taught himself during That Time. He's also quite good at propelling his body high into the air for surveillance.
Not exactly a master airbender, but does have the basics down, like Zoro. There are attempts to mimic Sanji's Sky Walk- more for entertainment and curiousity than anything- with varying levels of success (Brook kicks himself too high, doesn't kick at the right time, etc)
Learned about 'gliding suits' (created after he died) and refuses to ever wear one. Adamant that if he must wear traditional airbending clothing, it's flowy stuff or nothing. (he's shy about form fitting clothing being too close to the skin. well, not that he has any-)
Jinbei
literally the exact same. Fishmen can do all the same things in canon, but they cannot be benders. Reason being: every single one of them is uhh, hmm. best way to say this is waterbenders, but to the left.
Fishmen can manipulate water with their hands but only if they're touching the element itself; they can't turn it to ice or anything like that, but the tradeoff is the immense amount of power and precise control they can more easily learn than humans... or smth like that
honestly, Jinbei's just here to chill in this au and probably unintentionally give Luffy bad waterbending advice (it's advice for Fishman Karate which isn't the same, but it's pretty close right? And Luffy keeps asking and insisting he teach him, and well, who is Jinbei to say no? Surely, Franky, who came to watch, will tell him if he's giving the wrong idea-)
Nami yells at both of them. Then yells at Franky because of his waterbender conspiracy theorists.
