What made you really like interested in the Terror?
the terror is a show that i remember being vaguely aware of existing when it came out, but i had no real idea of how or where to watch it. i knew it starred jared harris, who i'd loved in mad men and chernobyl, so i definitely WANTED to watch it. i had a vague understanding that it had some sort of eldritch horror thing going on, which appealed to me since i was into the magnus archives at the time. but it was just one of those shows that like, i'd occasionally see a gifset for on tumblr or see mentioned on twitter and would go, "oh yeah, i still want to watch that."
anyway, then last like, august 2022?? i was in a weird mood, was watching a bunch of different videos about mysterious histories, and watched a video about the dyatlov pass incident. it happened in russia so i rewatched chernobyl, but it ALSO happened in winter and the combination of the story taking place in winter, the unknown horror elements that people grip onto, and my own rewatch of chernobyl which put jared harris at the forefront of my mind, reminded me of the existence of the terror and i googled where to stream it and lucked out that i happened to look when it was on hulu. i decided to give it a shot, put on the first episode, and then promptly binged the entire season in a single night.
as for why it gripped me so much and why i'm here giffing it daily 1.5 years later? definitely the inherent tragedy of it all. the what-if's that live rent free in my mind. the tuunbaq aspect of it is probably the least interesting to me—i like the added horror elements, but really i'm more preoccupied/interested in the human horror.
i tried reading the book but gave up about halfway through—around the point when fitzjames died? but really i think i gave up on it when i decided that i preferred the show's version of carnivale—the inherent horror of stanley setting himself and the tent on fire as this act of murder/suicide, this demented attempt at saving them all from a fate much worse, the guilt that fitzjames feels for it all...so much more interesting to me than the book's version of tuunbaq showing up to fuck shit up.
fitzier is definitely appealing to me and i've read a good number of amazing fics about them. the fandom itself is wonderful, and i LOVE reading the tags on all the gifsets i post and the ones i reblog from others. i'm not sure if i would have gone out of my way to gif the terror myself if a RL friend hadn't found out i was recently obsessed with it and offered to send me his copies, but i'm v glad he did. it's been fun v slowly re-watching the show while giffing almost every single frame of the season. i also just really appreciate that this is a finite story told in a single season.

🦋 - hi! If u can't recall, I was the anon who asked you about gifmaking before.
I know some of the raw videos of jannik/tennis in general may or may not have good video resolution. But your end-result of your gifs are usually sharpened but not that grainy either. How do you usually adjust your gifs' adjustments when it comes to low quality videos? Bcs your gifset tends to be in 540px wide, so it makes me wonder as well how you retain/enhance the quality of the gifs. I hope I delivered my question well 😂

disclaimer, for a lot of these settings, i can’t remember where i first found them but i had seen them used in gif tutorials when i was just learning how to make them. i’ve basically stuck with these ever since!
so join me as i go through the process of making this jannik gif (exclusive content, never before seen on my blog, etc etc):

okay so first of all, ofc as much as possible i try to get the best quality version even if the video itself is bad. like, if it’s on streaming i would screen record but otherwise i try to download the original file. it makes the end result much better imo
i generally go for 540px width bc i read somewhere that that’s the ideal size for tumblr gifs. if the cropped video is smaller than that or needs to be portrait oriented, i would usually just put two gifs side by side (like in this gifset) bc it’s better than trying to resize it bigger
but when a source video is around 720p, i can generally work with it! so here’s a sample that i trimmed from a fairly low quality jannik video from youtube. he's presumably on webcam here, which explains the bluriness
i loaded it in using video frames as layers. this pic shows it already cropped on my photoshop, with a frame delay set to 0.08 (my personal default, which i realized after everything was saved was still too fast for my liking but oh well i’m not redoing it):

as you can see on the bottom left corner, it still has a width slightly over 540px. so then i can proceed with the next step: resizing. what i do is go to the image tab and select image resizing, which brings up this window:

i change only the width to what i want (in this case 540px) and i use bicubic (smooth gradients) resampling
when that’s done, i convert to video timeline on the timeline window. then i select all the layers on the layers window and convert into smart object
now we can move on to sharpening! under the filter tab, i select sharpen and then smart sharpen. that gets this window to open up:

my presets have the amount at 500%, reduce noise at 0%, and remove gaussian blur. as for the radius, that depends on the video. by default i have it set to 0.5px, but i change it as needed. in this case, since it’s a close-up of jannik’s face, i feel comfortable using 0.8px (my highest setting). usually, if the video is shot from afar, i use something lower like 0.3px or 0.4px. i tend to find that oversharpening some really blurry videos makes them look worse, so i prefer to keep it looking a bit blurry if i really have to. thankfully, in our case right now jannik looks fine with high sharpening!
then i adjust the color and lighting as i wish. i would say that creating more contrast between the black and white levels of the gif helps it to appear sharper! though personally, i just like having more vibrant and contrast-y gifs so yeah
the final important thing happens when i save it. here are my settings in the save for web window:

i set max colors to 256, color reduction to selective, and dither to pattern. the last bit there is what i think is most important for keeping my gifs looking non-grainy! i looooove pattern dither, and i find that the other settings do make my gifs look more grainy so i never use them
and that’s it!! this is the process i use for all my gifs tbh, the main thing i play with for low quality ones is cropping and resizing + the smart sharpening radius

Enigma: this looks like it'll be interesting. it's definately one of the few trailers that seemed to have a really strong sense of plot and direction. it's definately one i look forward to hearing about. the only thing for me is that it seems like it'll be a student/teacher romance and euh. kinds wish they had cast win as a fellow student, probably even a transfer student instead if they're gonna have a potential romance. something i find funny about pairing the same actors together repeatedly in different dramas is that in f4 prim and win were roughly the same age in high school, but suddenly now he's her teacher? lol. anyway i do think ill look forward to it if for no other reason than to have a suspense/horror/fantasy show to look forward to week to week. edit: back to what i said about how weird it is for win and prim to go from fellow students to student/teacher. i happened upon this gifset from a convo btwn prim and win's f4 characters and... lmao????

A Boss and a Babe: boss/underling relationship #1 (boss/intern relationsip #1). im sorry... i have nothing to say about this one. my advice with these types of super generic plots is either to do smth subversive (like make the job interesting and actually put thought into the workplace setting) or lean into it as a parody, which still requires some subversion to an extent. the line "dont confess to your beloved while they're asleep like you're the main character in a novel," suggests they might dabble in it, but i can't tell to what extent. likely a pass for me regardless.
Find Yourself: boss/underling relationship #2 (boss/intern relationsip #2) The way gmmtv is making not one but two dramas with the main pairs specifically being a boss/intern dynamic and a third that's boss/assistant. I thought the theme this year was diversity lol? but yeah nothing really drew my attention other than the strong sense of deja vu. age gap romances dont really appeal to me regardless of gender esp when there's nothing else special about the story. like maybe if the job they had was interesting or smth. an obvious pass.
Double Savage: i got nothing from this trailer except for "He's a criminal!!!!" and that gmmtv got a fight choreographer for this trailer and they REALLY want you to know that. it reminds me of that trailer for a gritty family drama they released for gmmtv 2022, which ohm was also in. it felt really generic, it's clear they haven't figured out much in terms of plot or character yet. they just want you to know it's gritty and ohm will be there!!! a pass for me.
Hidden Agenda: ngl i found this one really funny. the "obviously pining for you as i help you hit on someone else" trope has a special flavor of ridiculousness in a comedic setting that i can appreicate. I'm sure it's been said, but i got really strong 2gether vibes from this, right down to the inexplicable guitar lessons. the main difference being the LI is helping MC pursue someone rather than helping them drive someone away. wow... diversity. hsbdjsn. that being said, it'll probably be a fine drama. the trailer at least was one of their better shot ones this year, but it's a pass for me personally.
23.5: MILKLOVE GL LETS GOOO. didn't think gmmtv would ever deliver, but it's clear at this point that if they didnt, they'd get left behind. it looks cute, it's interesting to see a sort of role reversal. though arguably inkpaa through ink's pov has a similar dynamic. really wish the secondary couple was also sapphic, but im sure they want to pull from the BL fanbase to guarantee views, which :///. still wish there was a second sapphic couple along with the mlm pair but alas. the set up is nothing special, which is fine so long as the writing and directing end up being good. I do hope they'll be able to make a good story and not just smth bland and basic just for the sake of throwing in their hat with the up and coming GL scene. I'll likely watch it as soon as it airs to the end regardless lol.
Prim/Dew Drama: It doesnt appear to have an English title and I'm on mobile so i cant copy/paste. but I dont really have much to say about this one bc there isn't much to work with. it's a trope i've seen a thousand times and there doesnt seem to be much else to it.
Cooking Crush: if they could make this a legitimately good cooking show, it could be interesting. however if the cooking aspect is only set dressing, then I don't think it'll stand out for me at all.
Wednesday Club: friendzone redux part 1- friendzone but Evil. the thing that called out to me most about this one was the line "are we friends because we truly want to be, or because no one else wants us," and i think if the drama mostly sticks to playing with that concept, it could be interesting. Atm tho, it seems a bit messy (not the fun kind) and confused. just kinda throwing the typical kinds of drama and taboo at the wall and seeing what sticks.
Last Twilight: appeals to me mostly because p'aof is attached along with jimmy. i didn't get past episode 3 of vice versa, so I haven't gotten the chance to really see him as a lead, but it's clear to me he has potential. I'm hoping that with a storyteller like p'aof at the helm, I'll get to see him shine a bit more. I'm also obviously not alone in the fact that seeing p'aof's name attached to something automatically makes me curious about it. i do hope they do their research bc tackling a story where a disability is central can be a slippery slope. i'll wait and see to hear about this one when it airs before i jump in.
Loneliness Society: this one unexpectedly caught my eye. it seems cute and like alot of fun. the whole thing is hilarious to me. you can tell everyone in that hospital room is well versed in the "waking up after an accident with amnesia and forgetting your spouse so you fall in love with them all over again❤️" trope for them to automatically jump to him having amnesia about ONE person vs the fact that he's never met her before sjbfjfhd. I do love that the LI is the suspicious brother of the amnesiac man rather than the amnesiac himself; the dynamic already seems interesting and we dont have to deal with the implications regarding how she'll be full on gaslighting the amnesiac lol. the vibes and set up really reminded me of what i'd expect from a kdrama. lots of parody potential with this one. if i hear about it when it comes out (moreso to remind me exists rather than for quality check), I'll probably check it out.
Only Friends: friendzone redux part 2- friendzone but Gay(er). the cuts were so fast i had no clue who was cheating on who and who was friends with who and who was sleeping with who and--well anyway, i can tell it isn't for me, just in terms of the tone, but good for all the girlies out there who like to witness queer people misbehaving with maximum friend group MESS.
Faceless Love: boss/underling relationship #3. as someome who once worked in a research lab that heavily focused on researching face recognition, i feel like im being gaslit every time a drama decides to depict a character with prosopagnosia lol. that being said the depiction isnt too bad. how prosopagnosia manifests is widely variable in person to person, which I would give the drama major props for addressing so people dont think ALL people with prosopagnosia experience it the same exact way MC does. not me taking this much time to ramble only about face blindness. anyway this drama has the potential to be cute, however it runs the risk of falling into "generic office setting with generic work." it would be nice if the job was interesting. possibly even having smth to do with faces so we could see how MC cleverly gets around certain limitations to do his job well. the love triangle and angst seem to have been haphazardly thrown in there but these scenes were shot specifically to be in a trailer so that's no surprise. probably a skip but it would be nice if they could surprise me.
Dangerous Romance: i personally really like the dynamic where it's like. character A bullies character B, but every time it happens character B is just like: ....Anyway. and fucks with them right back. bullying that looks onesided to an outsider but is actually a two-way street. it's always funnier than it should be and Chimon is perfect for playing a character who doesn't take anyone's shit and causes problems on purpose. my only reservation is the high school setting, but like with 23.5, i'll probably push past that.
The Jungle: friendzone redux part 3- friendzone but uhm...Animal Themed? honestly find it hilarious how all the main characters have animal names and the apparent antagonist is named Hunter. it's so goofy, bless. i doubt they'll do this based off the tone of the trailer, but if they leaned in to the goofiness, it could end up being unexpectedly fun. unfortunately it seems they're aiming to be somewhat serious but who knows. likely a skip for me.
Midnight Museum: not much to say, although i already have half a mind to watch it when it airs. it's an interesting concept so i'll probably wait and see. A side note: I've noticed gmmtv did this several times with their trailers this year, but they really LOVE a face reveal when plot wise it makes no sense. it's really for the benefit for the audience to be like OMG ITS [ACTOR]! which is fine for a super early concept trailer like this. but i have to say, very funny for someone like me, who has very little familiarity with thai actors, sitting through multiple suspenseful build ups, only to get a dramatic face reveal and be like "idk her" lol. I hear that tor being in this means the drama is likely to be good quality, which i hope is true, though i don't know who this man is. sorry to this man.
Our Skyy 2: i mean i only watched bad buddy out of all of the featured drama pairings. looking forward to episode 13 of bad buddy i guess lol.
Beauty Newbie: had to take a long sigh before writing this. not much to say, girl gets bullied for being ugly, gets surgery, only to get shamed by her friend for doing so. love triangle. fah and win are also there. idk if they'll do anything remotely interesting with this.
The Interest: i love the direction for this trailer. i have to say though, the fact that the last few seconds suggest that the story is mainly gonna focus on a debt collector/debtor romance was a disappointment given what the trailer was building up. kinda wish it was just a crime drama and if there was a romance, it would be with someone who was from the same world. could be interesting, but the fact that it's a movie means they're not likely going to have too much going on. side note: whichever brightwin girlies are still out there, i bet they're gonna make the interest/enigma edits. like it's right there lol.
Cherry Magic (thai remake): haha Oh Boy. ngl the only casting I'm on board with is Sing apparently playing the Rokkaku counterpart. the rest of the casting is meh to me, which isn't to say anything negative about any of the actors, and it's disappointing to me they seem to have their Fujisaka counterpart no longer be ace/aro. the original didn't really lack anything (i know people had slight issues with the physical intimacy being lacking but i personally didn't mind much) and I don't see how they can add to it and not have it feel like a beat for beat retread. Remakes are fine, but they have the burden of having to justify their existence, especially when the original was well made, popular, and didn't come out very long ago. I won't write off the possibly of them doing smth interesting with it, but I doubt I'll be checking it out.
finishing thoughts: well i think enough people have clowned on the fact that the theme this time around was diversity, but wow. 3 dramas with a specific boss/underling dynamic, 3 other dramas about messy friend groups, that alone is rather unpromising. generally, other than 1 GL and i guess the 2 dramas that had lead characters with disabilities, though there were a few promising dramas to me, it doesn't seem any more "diverse" than last year or the year before. the genres, themes, and demographics seem rather consistent with previous years, so I'm not really sure what their aim was with this year's lineup. the trailers were all fairly vague, so maybe they'll surprise us when it comes to the final trailers and the dramas air (doubt).
a note about the over abundance of office romances: as i've already said, an issue i have with office romances is really similar to my issue with campus romances, in that the setting doesn't play any important part in the story or the characters themselves. often this results in them all blending together and being near exact duplicates of each other. they're always just at an office doing generic office work for a generic company and you're never sure exactly what it is the characters are doing and what their job actually is. one drama that actually subverts this is A Business Proposal. the company has a clearly defined product, what the leads do at that company is clearly defined, and their work is obviously really important to them and something they're very passionate about. I've said this about campus romances before, but it really feels like office romances are wasting the opportunities the setting can offer. rather than just using it as set dressing, they can use it as an opportunity to tell us things about the characters. what they're passionate about and what they aren't, how they work, how they confront challenges. I'll admit, office/work place romances are better at this than campus dramas, but still it feels like these aspects are addressed in the most generic ways possible. pulling all-nighters to be able to finish their vague and generic paper work, impressing their bosses at their vague and generic presentations, being selected to go on vague and generic business trips to places the writers select simply bc they are vaguely impressive not necessarily bc the going to that place has anything to do with the occupation. i think if writers put a little more effort and thought into the characters careers, jobs, and workpalces, it would make the dramas feel more interesting and unique rather than just another mesh of suits and paperwork and business jargon.

So, as some of you might know, one of my GIFs was recently featured on the Tumblr Radar - which is pretty cool!  I was fairly happy with how that one turned out, especially considering that I made it rather last-minute on a whim to acknowledge Valentine’s Day.  It understandably received a lot of attention as a result of this, and I’ve loved reading through all the comments and tags (especially all the ones about how people want to eat the heart containers from TP); however, I wanted to clear up a bit of a misunderstanding surrounding the creation of that GIF, as there were additionally a lot of tags along the lines of #3d art or #artists on tumblr in that influx of reblogs.  I don’t want to take credit for something I didn’t do, even accidentally, and so allow me to be perfectly clear: the heart container GIF is not something I modeled and rendered myself! It is the original in-game model, recorded in-game using the Dolphin GCN/Wii emulator, with very little done in the way of post-processing in Photoshop.  If that sounds impossible or confusing (which is perfectly understandable, for those of you unaware of what Dolphin is capable of), I’d like to take this opportunity to give you guys a bit of a “peek behind the curtain,” as it were, to show you guys exactly how I made that particular GIF, as well as similar ones I’ve made (such as those in my #items tag).  
I didn’t take screenshots of my initial process (nor did I save the edited textures I used), so I’ll be recreating it from the ground up for the sake of demonstration, but that shouldn’t be a problem.
First thing’s first: finding a heart container! For this particular GIF, I wound up using the one that spawns after the Morpheel fight at the end of Lakebed Temple.  I’m sure many others would work just as well (I think, at the time, this one just happened to be the most accessible to me), but let’s use the same one for the sake of it.

Morpheel: defeated.  And I didn’t even need Zora Armor! (Seriously, we do that in the speedrun.  But I’m getting off-topic.)  Of course, we’re going to need clean, close-up footage of the heart container rotating in order to do what we want to do, so let’s shift into first-person mode and and get a bit closer to the thing.

Now, because the only UI-element in this shot is Link’s health (and it’s in the corner and relatively non-obtrusive), removing it isn’t strictly necessary - but I’ve already made a texture pack that removes UI elements as part of my Text Free TP project from a while back, so let’s load it anyway, for the sake of being thorough.  This shot is also still a bit too far away, so next we’ll be utilizing Dolphin’s free cam feature (which can be accessed by going to Graphics > Advanced > Free Look and checking “Enable” in Dolphin) in order to get the heart container in a more central position. Now we’re left with this:

And we’re already looking well on our way to making a nice, solid color background GIF.  But how do we get the solid color? Well, that’s where more texture editing comes into play - and here I have to give credit where credit is due, as this is a trick I picked up from 186px, after wondering how they were able to make this GIFset of Link fighting Ganondorf in The Wind Waker in a great, black void.  (Seriously, shoutouts to them, their stuff was and still is amazing.)
But, very basically, we’ll be using Dolphin’s texture dump feature in order to find the textures that need to be edited so we can replace them with pure black ones.  Texture dumping can be enabled by going to Graphics > Advanced > Utility and checking “Dump Textures,” and the file path for these dumped textures by default is Documents > Dolphin Emulator > Dump > Textures > [Game ID].  (In the case of Twilight Princess, the Game ID is GZ2E01).  After dumping the textures in the Morpheel arena, my GZ2E01 folder looks like this:

When editing textures, sometimes you’ll have to endure a bit of trial and error until you find the correct ones.  Luckily, in this scene, the textures making up the sand floor and the stone walls are rather large, so let’s isolate the ones we’re pretty sure are responsible (plus a few others that are obviously environmental, just to be safe).

Now, when loading custom textures, it’s important that the file name you’re trying to load matches up exactly with the original texture that you’re trying to replace.  I have a plain, black, square PNG that I keep on my desktop specifically for this purpose; I copy the file names of the textures I’ve isolated, then rename and drag and drop the black PNG into the folder where custom textures are loaded (Documents > Dolphin Emulator > Load > Textures > [Game ID]).  Like so:

And now, to refresh our custom textures by disabling and reenabling them in Dolphin’s graphics settings:

And voilà! We have something that very nearly resembles the GIF I made (well, a still of it, at least).  I skipped over a few details, such as the fact that TP has a pretty significant amount of bloom surrounding just about everything, which I’m fairly certain I disabled using cheat codes when I made the original GIF in order to give it an overall cleaner look.  It’s hard to tell from this still, but TP’s heart containers also sparkle considerably in a way that’s random and not loopable; I found the texture responsible for this sparkle and replaced it with a transparent 1x1 PNG, in order to remove it entirely (as well as the texture behind the “glow” of the thing).  After that, it was as simple as recording the game with OBS, dumping the MP4 into Photoshop, cropping and cutting it to make it loop, and adding some adjustment layers for contrast and color.  So...yeah!
I hope this has served to clear up any confusion about some of the things that I’ve made in the past.  I’m not a 3D artist - just a person with an emulator and way too much free time on their hands.  This stuff is really, super simple, and also lots of fun, so I would highly encourage anyone with the means to mess around with emulation on their own some time to see what they can do!  (Even if you don’t have Photoshop and can’t make GIFs, there are always edits, such as this one I made of Midna.)  For Twilight Princess in particular, I also highly recommend checking out TPGZ; it’s a patch you can apply to a clean ISO of the original game, designed with the purposes of helping folks learn and practice the speedruns (yes, I had to bring up speedrunning one last time, kill me), but it’s got nifty features like built-in savestates, cheat codes, and HUD removal, as well as the ability to freeze actors while maintaining the ability to move the camera freely, among other things (all things that are very useful as far as making unique graphics go).  Sorry this post got as long as it did, but I at the very least hope that some of you found it educational and/or interesting.  Cheers!

First off, this is not meant as a post where I am saying look here, this is the only and perfect way of giffing. Not at all. When I started out, there were many tutorials available that helped me figure out how to gif, and I slowly developed my own style and I would like to create an in depth tutorial that helps you grasp the basics. Heck, make your gifs whatever way you want, go absolutely crazy on colours or whatever, this tutorial is just here to guide you through the process of gifmaking, because I know it can be very intimidating to people who are just getting into it. photoshop. I use photoshop CC 2020 on a mac and I pay monthly bc of student discount. There are many, many links you can find on @completeresources for downloads. You can use any photoshop you like, as long as you have the timeline option. 
Handbrake. This nifty program is used mostly to convert MKV files to MP4, but I also use it to quickly extract the part of the video I want, because opening an entire movie in photoshop can quickly clog up space bc of cache and it’s a pain to find that one second scene you want with that tiny scrollbar. Download it from here.

extras: VLC, just to find how many seconds the scene is at, so we can input the time in Handbrake. You can use any other player though for that step, I use VLC or Quicktime. Download VLC from here.

- how to download videos
Ok so I will quickly go through a few methods here for getting your clips. 
1. t*rrenting.
This is the most popular method for getting your film or tv episode. I personally get my t/rrents from rarbg dot to or if I am having trouble finding one, I go to 1337x dot to, because they compile them from different sites. I copy the magnet link and go to the qbittorrent application, import magnet link, choose the files I want and it downloads. Remember, the higher the seeder leecher ratio, the quicker it will download. 
But which file should I choose?? there’s so many? Well yes there are many many files for different movies. On RAR, I found more than 40 t/rrent files for Endgame. I think that generally, the 4/5 GB 1080p copies are just fine. I have compared giffing with a 60GB Interstellar Remux (which is directly ripped from bluray) file to giffing from a 4GB 1080 file, it literally gave me the same quality and the 1080 looked crisper. So yeah don’t kill your computers space, just go for those 3/4/5GB files. 
hot tip - don’t download from yify, the quality is way worse.
2. movies from twitter accounts such as logolessHD.
these accounts post MEGA links to movies and shows, but you will have to request to follow them to be able to get the links. Then you can download the movie from there. The accounts you can get these links from are here: 1 - 2 - 3 - 4. The quality can be a bit less though compared to t/rrents. Here is a link to a tumblr blog with these kinds of downloads too. 
3. downloading from youtube.
ok, use 4kvideodownloader for this. It is incredibly easy to use, you just need the youtube link. Always Always go for 1080p, if you can’t then 720 at the most because otherwise quality gets really bad really fast. 
4. netflix / screenrecording
If you don’t want to download / can’t find something, try using netflix and screen recording. In my experience, SC only works on google chrome and not safari so jsyk!! Here is a tutorial on how to screen record on mac (or for quick access, click command+shift+5) and windows. 
NOTE: quicktime screen records at 60fps, which is nearly thrice the frame rate of movies and shows, so at the end you may end up with duplicate frames in the timeline of photoshop, so you will have to delete those frames one by one sorry.

- extracting your scene from handbrake using VLC / built in video player
muahaha here’s where the magic starts to happen. Open handbrake and import your video. For this part I am going to use a scene of Keanu Reeves from the 2019 movie Always be my Maybe. I will demonstrate with that scene up until colouring, because then I will show how I colour different scenes!
So when you have opened the image in HB, you get this layout. (link to imgur)
it is a bit intimidating, I know. So basically, first, click on where it says chapters near the top right and click seconds. then, input the time you want to extract from the entire video. For the Keanu scene, that scene starts at 00:57:18 and ends at 00:57:21. These are not exact timings, I usually add an extra second so the entire scene is captured and I heavily recommend you do the same.

Now down below, you can click browse and edit where your new video will be saved and you can also change the name of the new clip. Always ALWAYS remember to keep the .mp4 ending do not cut that part out!!! If the ending says .m4v change it to mp4!!

Ok then I undertake the following steps to ensure the video that will be exported is of the highest quality possible: 
Firstly, I uncheck all these three boxes:

Then you see this bar here right? Well I will edit the dimensions, filters and video now. You don’t have to do anything for audio, subtitles or chapters so leaving that alone is best. Lets go to dimensions first.

Here are my settings for dimensions:

The storage size depends on if your file is 1080p or 720p. Most movies are shot in a ratio of 2.35:1, so if it does not say 1920x1080 like a 1080 file should be, don’t fret. The cut off parts are just the black bars you see when watching the movie. Handbrake doesn’t recognise nor convert them so that’s one less thing we have to worry about. 
Now onto filters. Literally do NOT change anything there. Leave the settings as they are, which is like this:

Finally, go to video. You will see this kind of window and these are my settings (imgur)
Firstly, leave video encoder at H264 or 265 depending on how your video is encoded. For the FPS, choose same as source for the framerate and click constant instead of variable!!! This will ensure your video is smooth. For quality, bring the slider all the way to the right. RF0 means it will be at the best quality possible. I didn’t edit the settings at the bottom at all so just leave them be.
Now click this green icon (imgur) at the top and your video will start encoding! It does not take long at all and then your video is ready to made into a nice lil gif!

- opening in photoshop
woohooo we got our video!! Ok now open photoshop. Click on file -> open:

now search for the file you extracted from VLC and import it! Now your screen will look like this (imgur). With a different video, of course lol.

- trimming, cropping and resizing videos
ok so firstly, we will trim the video. As you can see in the image I linked in the step before, the screencap you see is of someone else in ABMM, not Keanu, like I want. So use this slider:

and click and drag it to where your scene begins and shows up in the window. Then, click the following button to split at playhead.

This will split the clip and so the timeline and layers section will look like this (imgur) (mine has three sections because there was space before and after the keanu scene so I cut two parts which made three clips)
so now all there is left in trimming is delete the layers of the video you do not need! For me in that image it was layer 1 and 3!
cropping and resizing
This depends on the kind of gifset you want to make. This picture is a handy guide for resizing:

Ok now I will crop my gif. Click on this tool:

and now my interface looks like this. I am using the ratio 6 by 4 but you can use whatever you want.

Ok now you may need to crop some black bars but since I don’t have to, I just moved the crop area around a bit and clicked enter to crop it. Just play around with sizes and whatnot, and get a feel of what you like!!
cropping tip: crop as close as you can to the edges. The more you zoom in, the more pixels that will be visible and it will make your gif extremely grainy!!
So now for resizing, go to image -> image size or click command-shift-i

A LITTLE NOTE - I personally do not use automatic but a friend who shared her sharpening psd would prefer if I kept it secret, but automatic is what most people use and it is what I used up until november 2019 and it worked just fine.
Ok anyway now I want to make my gif 268px wide so I will input that as width and make sure you click this!! It makes sure your height and width are proportional!

ok now we have this. After you’ve done that, click ok!

congrats, you just resized a gif!! Your gif probably looks smaller now in the main window once you click ok, just zoom in to it! don’t worry about it looking bad quality, sharpening is next!

Now we sharpen! Make sure your layer is selected Go to filter -> sharpen -> smart sharpen and this window will pop up:

click ok! Now ... your gif might look a bit oversharpened. That’s why we use a bit of gaussian blur. Go to filter -> blur -> gaussian blur.

now I think most people also use a 1.0 radius so set that and click ok.

But now your gif looks too blurry. Lets fix that. Double click the icon below in the layers panel

and adjust the opacity! My go to is between 25 to 35, just so the gif looks smooth!

Now we’re done with sharpening! This is how our gif looks with sharpening with 0.05 speed:

sweet right? Now .... the best and hardest part ... colouring!!!!

- colouring and psds
First I will shortly talk about psds. They are photoshop files, that save the entire document which means you can share it with someone after uploading it and when they download and open it, they can edit the layers, tweak things just like they made the file in the first place. Many people upload psds of gifs with colouring so others can use that colouring. You can find so many psds on completeresources (I only linked gif psds but they have psds for icons and headers too) or allresources. I do not use psds but colour from scratch every time so I will not be explaining them further, sorry. 
So for colouring, I will go very in depth into different styles. Here are the main types of colouring I have noticed people use on here:
simple - I normally use this for scenes with people in it
vibrant, bright - I use this for scenes with lots of colours in them
pale
black and white
gradients - I use this to spice scenes up a bit
colour palette 
I only go for simple, vibrant and gradients and never do cp, pale or black and white, but I will link a few tutorials by talented creators who do and after that I will explain the three ways I colour by showing you three different examples :)
Some useful tutorials I have found for pale/bw/cp colouring are:
this pale tutorial by @samecoin​. Especially useful read because Tippy explains how to avoid whitewashing in pale edits.
this pale tutorial by @kateausten​. Very easy to read and to follow.
this colour palette tutorial by @freddyfreemen​. They explain the basics and provide a psd too.

Btw, this is a useful website that explains all the different adjustment layers in photoshop if you’re still getting the hang of them
ok now onto my examples for the colouring. I will first do simple colouring for which I will use the keanu gif. For vibrant and gradient I will use two different gifs. I usually put my colouring into a group so first, close the video group layer and click this to make a new group which will contain the adjustment layers for our colouring:

SIMPLE COLOURING
First I will brighten the gif up with some curves. That is this tool:

Then you get this window:

As you see, I have selected that white eyedropper tool. Using that I will brighten the image. Basically, you want to click on the whitest part of the gif using that tool. This is because wherever you click, the eyedropper will turn that part into white and adjust the entire gif that way so if you click somewhere dark, you’ll get this white bright fuzzy mess. So I clicked on the lightest place which imo is the white specks near the glass in front of his hand and now my gif looks like this:

Ok now if you look at the above image, there is a black eyedropper two steps above the white one. You want to use that to click on the darkest place of the gif bc it’ll turn that to pure black. Here is my gif when I did that:

not a massive difference but it balances things out. Now I will add some saturation. Click this icon:

which brings up this window. I have already set saturation to around 15 to make it a bit warmer:

I think it looks nice, but I would like to add something extra. That is why I am going to play around with selective colour to make the background pop a bit and make the black colour more dark. So click this icon:

and you get this window and these colours (imgur). You can play around a lot with selective colour and manipulate colours! So if I turned the black dial on reds to +100, they would become wayyyy darker. However because I want the background to pop, I would use the colours magenta and blue (and black for the final touch). For those my settings are this: 1 - 2 - 3 (imgur). So now my gif looks like this:

And now i think we are done! For comparison, this is what the gif looked like with absolutely no colouring or sharpening:

And that was all for simple colouring!! Lets move on to vibrant colours!!
VIBRANT COLOURING
For this I will use an example from Thor: Ragnarok bc thor is my soft bb. I did not do much for this first example except play around a lot with selective colour and I used the exact way of adding saturation and curves as shown before. Honestly just playing around with selective is the best bet to get vibrant colouring. The gif without sharpening etc was this:

pretty sweet huh? Just play a lot with saturation, hue and selective colour and channel mixer and you can create a lot of styles that way!
GRADIENT
for this I will use another clip from Thor, but from The Dark World. It is a bare clip where it is raining and I will add a gradient on it. This is the gif without colouring nor sharpening:

now we will do the sharpening and colouring. I already applied a basic curves and saturation layer so now it looks like this:

It looks a bit better right? Ok lets get that gradient applied. Click here:

and click on gradient, NOT gradient maps bc those are different things and I honestly dont know how maps work.

now this is what will appear, I haven’t changed anything to this yet:

What style, colours, angle you choose is up to you. I personally am going for 0 angle because I want it going right. Now, to choose colours, double click on the colour shown next to the word gradient. This window will show up:

The fun part is you can do what you want here. Just experiment, click the buttons, adjust opacity etc. When you click at the bottom of the bar somewhere another stop marker appears meaning you can have even more colours! Just click on the bottom markers and edit to your hearts content! Use the top button to adjust opacities. Personally I went for this gradient:

Ok but now we have a problem because our gradient is fully covering the image and you can’t see anything. That is where blending modes come in. Right click on the gradient layer and click blending options. This window will pop up (ingur). When you click blending mode, these options appear (imgur). 
Here is a good guide explaining the blending modes
I just recommend playing around seeing which one suits you. I went for overlay, which makes my final gif look like this:

- adding subtitles
although we wish we could, we can’t all lip read so we need subtitles also I’m hard of hearing and need them anyway but yeah, I will quickly highlight how I add subs! I use the font Arial Rounded MT Bold Regular.
I will first link to this post because it helped me a lot and may explain stuff better than I do. 
Lets take the keanu gif we had earlier. In it, he says ‘fish flakes’. Now what I do is this. Click on this icon:

and drag a box around the gif fully. Add your text. Mine looks like this now:

Well that ... does not look like a subtitle. BTW my settings are:

*when there are two people speaking I change the colour of the second person to #ffff00 - also for 540px gifs I usually use 12/13px text.
Ok now I will add the stroke and drop shadow. Right click on the layer of text, click blending options and change your stroke and drop shadow settings to this and this (imgur). Now just click the move tool or hit V on keyboard to select it and drag the gif down wherever you want. Now my final gif looks like this:

Ok, now if you have two gifs and you want them to be the same distance from the bottom, right click the text layer of the first gif document, click duplicate layer and you will get this window:

now click on destination and depending on what files you have open in PS, you will get this window:

now just choose where you want the text to go and if the gifs are the same sizes itll appear exactly where it did in the first one and you can edit the text for the second. You can do this with adjustment layers, groups etc too!!
Now text is done! Off to the next part!

- editing frames / timeline speed
We are done editing, now time to convert to frame animation and edit the speed! 
Ok click on the four bars on the right side of the video timeline. It will bring up a menu. From there, select this:

This will make individual layers of every frame into clips. Now, click this at the bottom left side of the video timeline:

This will convert your video timeline to a frame animation timeline. Now it looks like this (imgur). you’re probably wondering wait where the heck did my layers go well don’t fret, lets click the four bars on the right side again and click this:

now look! We have got all our frames into the timeline! Just delete the excessive frames at the front. Now click the four bars again, select all frames and then click the number at the bottom and change it to 0.05 or 0.06 or whatever speed you want:

- actions
Now actions ... man they make everything so much easier. Basically actions are a sequence of steps you undertake in photoshop that are recorded which you can then save and use on multiple files. This makes the giffing process much much faster!!! For instance, these are the actions I have saved (mind the doubles lol I am experimenting a bit!)

As you can see, I have one for undertaking the entire video timeline to frame animation process and one for sharpening and the subtitles. It has saved me around 75% of the original time I put into creating sets before which is a lifesaver.

Well basically, those are my settings above. Make sure the looping option is set at forever. Also on the left size you see how big your gif is, make sure it is under 8mb but tumblr is unstable so keep it under 5MB and it should be fine. 
I use different exporting types at times. Sometimes I use selective and pattern, sometimes diffusion or adaptive+dif. Just remember that the gif size depends on which you choose so keep that in mind. Here’s the difference (if u can even spot it).

Personally I mostly only use selective + pattern!
btw make sure your matte is at NONE!!! This is because otherwise you have those whitish transparent borders on your gif, esp noticable on dark gifs, like shown in this tutorial by the talented @joewright​ !

reminder: quicktime records at 60FPS, so unless you want a laggy gif delete the extra duplicate frames in the frame animation timeline!!
When opening import video frames to layers, do not click skip every second frame!! do not!!!!
Do not steal gifs. Try making them. I know it takes time and it can get frustrating but don’t post someone elses gifs as your own. Even the ugliest gifset in existence made originally by someone is better than a stunning set put together full of stolen gifs from various users. Don’t be that person
Don’t be afraid to ask for help pls just go on anon if u want!!
use the tumblr dimensions!!! I cannot stress enough how important this is because if you don’t, your gifs will look stretched af and lose quality so like .. don’t do that

buckle up folks this is gonna be long bc min. character limit uni papers thought me a lot of things but def not how to be concise 
01. planning
this was a long time ago but i do remember wanting to make something with overlays bc quite honestly i started working on this way too late and it seemed the fastest lmao. jokes on me i had 2 failed attempts and this also went through some changes along the way. initially i wanted to combine dye, bol and present:you... them being my fave eras for this lovable dumb man. so it would’ve been one pair for each gif.
02. creating
picking footage
so onto creating,, first things first the concept had to be changed bc present:you only had light shots so that had to be removed rip, here you can see a failed attempt at me trying to include it. this was before i started making proof on concepts for gifsets which later on saved me so much time... but not this time

once i accepted defeat i had to reshuffle the shots and add some new ones but it was all good i was not losing braincells at all. so onto the real gifs, gonna show you the red one bc that’s my fave of the three. 
making the base
btw i’m always working with timelines and smart objects bc it feels way easier than frames. so here we started with this jaebeom, and since the background and his hair it’s pretty dark those will be the parts which will be covered with the next gif. i made it black and white and also adjusted the levels a bit to make it a bit softer (lowered the whites and lightened the blacks)

for aesthetic purposes i always go for one close shot and one wider shot, then literally all i did was add the other gif on top, and set it to lighten. okay this is it that’s the whole process bye. oh we need the rest too? okay okay. so btw for a while i was considering making both of them coloured but then bw looked better when having all three gifs under each other, felt more like a ‘set’

now for this gif in particular i did not need to mask anything, shocking, but for the others i had to either blend the edges or make the bottom layer darker at some places to let the top layer show up a bit more e.g. for the second gif i needed a tiny blending like so (it’s the layer 1 copy 3 lmao)

making the overlay bits
then we are basically done with the main part of the gifs, obviously i applied colouring to each inside the smart object. but i always like to add something extra on top which are usually two things: 1.) full overlay gif something blurred (literally any kind of footage.. i used leaves, water, space renders etc. so far), or a light leak, oooor a bokeh effect whatever and just keep it subtle. and 2.) some smaller moving bits which are usually sparkles, dust, stars, galaxy stuff etc. u get the idea. for the above gif this happens to be Layer 1 copy 2 rip. also in this case this overlay is actually this jaebeom footage blurred and with some colouring added on top of it to have this redish brassy tone (not me forgetting about this completely lmao) obviously it’s zoomed in and i’m using the top left part of the video blurred. look at me explaining my chosen gif with another gifs gahd i’m bad at this. anyways it just goes to show i use practially anything i can think of and just blur it.

for the full overlay footage i either go black and white and set it to overlay or soft light, whatever works best, or go coloured and set it to lighten again.... whatever blending mode works best. for this specific 2nd gif i went with lighten. for the smaller moving bits same tbh i just adjust the levels/curves to only show the bits i need when it’s set to lighten, i.e. i make its background more black so it won’t make the gif hazy.

 adding the text
so anyways i add those on top so it’s not boring anymore,, practically just concealing the fact that all i‘ve really done was adding a gif on top of another and set it to lighten rip. oh yeah we have the text layers, nothing fancy here: for the script i used Challenge and the serif is FogtwoNo5. For the script i sampled some red from the background and just set it to overlay, and for the serif i just went with full caps adding some extra kerning bc one: for full caps you always need that, not this much lol, and two: it just looks better okay. 
last touches
then i added a levels adjustment layer because i felt the gifs were a bit brighter than i wanted, so we ended up with this

oh my gahd we are almost theeeere, for saving gifs here are my settings, i did not have to tell photoshop which colours to use luckily so it was an easy process.

03. posting
eeehmmm posting... yeah nothing exciting? i just save it in my drafts check it on mobile, and if something is really messed up i’ll change some colouring and saving settings, but this was a fairly ‘easy’ gif for tumblr to compress decently so none of that.

TFATWS episode 1 rewatch commentary
The first scene was so beautiful. I loved that we didn't start directly with the fight sequence. It feels way closer to the quiet beginning of CATWS and I love it so much.
The title is also SO NEAT, music's on point too but hey it’s Henry Jackman the one thing I’m sure it’s going to be great overall is the score.
The choreography is AMAZING, really well shot. Sam shielding himself with only one wing was MA-JES-TIC.

I did feel so uncomfortable in regards to the military aspect of it. Not that I was expecting anything else, but both here and in Captain Marvel the military we're good guys < 3 propaganda is so blatant and ugh:/ At least there wasn’t a literal recruitment spot like with CM.

Uhhmmmm I'm very ambivalent about the "Hail Hydra". On one hand, it was 100% fanservice and the internet is probably going to go insane over it, and the dead way Sebastian Stan delivered the line. ANYWAY CONCLUSION THAT EPISODE WAS SO FUCKING GOOD LIKE HOLY SHIT. I love them so much. The balance between the personal conflicts and the political aspect (although the military aspect is still very much yikes) was on point and it was overall a joy to watch.

My massive Bellarke is epic and here’s proof from s5-7 rant.
Ok guys I cannot stress enough that I am drunk, this is long, it has strong language, and it’s a trip. I am putting it almost all under a cut because it is 20 f*ing pages on word.
For reference: this was on a discord chat and I am removing all names and a few other things but there will be absolutely no editing. Anything in straight text is me, anything in italics is someone else (there’s several different someone elses so people are separated by line breaks). On my page I think it appears as everything grey is someone else, everything black is me. I’m going to put the beginning on here and rest under the cut. Guys... I'm trying to stay optimistic but I'm really worried that jroth is gonna make bellarke canon in a really disappointing way. Like for me infidelity is a huge no in ships and I hate that becho has gone on so long that there doesn't seem to be a lot of room left in the canon timeline for a becho breakup/end that doesn't ruin the start of Bellarke for me

Kate will say it better than I will, but don't lose hope! Becho hasn't really been together on screen for very long. It's only been like a few weeks to a month since the beginning of S5. They've stretched it out over two seasons, but in canon not much time has passed. And most of that time had Bellamy either sacrificing almost 300 lives to save Clarke, poisoning his sister to save Clarke, or fucking off into the wilderness with Josephine to save Clarke. They've just straight up not had enough time for Bellamy to be like, "Hey Echo, I know I said things wouldn't change but that was before my wife was actually alive, so bye." Though  to wishing Becho had just never happened. We got one good angst scene with Clarke seeing them kiss. But otherwise, I could have very much done without their whole relationship.

Word Of Honor - 1st watch insta thoughts - Episode 1
K, before I get started, here's what I know about "Word of Honor" prior to watching it, based on random unexplained gifsets on my dash: Not much tbh. I know there's this one guy that is a bit more tanned and has a beard. And there's some smirky guy. No idea what else he does, but he seems important. There's also swords cutting fabric, i'm thinking sleeves, because cut-sleeve? Way to be subtle. Oh, and there's two girl assassins. I have no idea who they kill or what their motives are. But they look fierce. That's literally all. Oh, and it's on my dash so much that I just HAVE TO assume it's BL. Because... my dash has tendencies.
Okay, here we go.
Episode 1
I'm skipping the intro, because I don't wanna be spoilered.
Oh, somebody explains the background story. That's nice. I have no idea, because the subtitles are going by so fast, but something about 5 lakes and an armory which is like a treasure. K, Glazed armor is important for... whatever reason.
Wow, they have nice trees.
Ninja people on roofs. Magic lanterns. Oh no, they broke the paper windows :( Lots of fighting. Why on earth are they going back and forth between fast movements and slow-mo? That looks so weird. Ah, yes, fighting on rooftops. I've seen better. Just saying. Probably gonna make so many enemies saying that. Oh, already the first fabric cutting. Was it a sleeve?
K, so the one guy is the leader of the window of heaven, whatever that is. And people are shocked to see him. Is he a good guy or a bad guy?

Hm, and now they're talking about the dead guy, so he must have been important too. He's burried at the Four Seasons.... Hotel? Probably not hotel, I didn't catch that right, I guess.
She has some wooded thing in her hand.

Tragic hero guy is visiting some older guy at some place. Ah it's four seasons MANOR. Ok. And tragic hero guy is some sort of lord. WTH is this window of heaven thing? Is it like a magical place? Is tragic hero lord poisoned or something? Oh, and the old guy is kinda pissed at him for some reason, they don't say why. He wants his nails done or something. That's... probably not right.

Some palace, looks a bit like Koi Tower to me. Some guys talking about somebody spitting blood. Tragic hero lord guy maybe? (who else is left alive anyway?)

Wait who's the mirror guy? Was that pretty flashback guy? Seems like it. (Sorry, I'm faceblind - not even joking, I really am and utterly bad at recognizing people) Oh no, and now tragic hero lord guy is crying. We're only in episode 1... why are there tears already?
And why are they all talking about 7 nails, and he only has 6 nails showing. Where on earth did he put the 7th nail? Do I even wanna know?
It's constantly snowing in the outdoor scenes, that must have been annoying. At least all the extras get to wear hats or helmets.
Okay, tragic hero guy goes to the palace. Talks to the... guy there. Whoever he is. Ooh. Tragic hero lord guy is getting naked. In front of... ah just to show off the nails. And palace guy is shocked. Oh, tragic hero lord guy gave himself ONLY SIX nails. K, no search party needed, whew. And now palace guy is super pissed. Because he... doesn't want him to die? So... he threatens to kill him? What?
Does tragic hero lord guy want to be killed right away or want to be given that 7th nail? I don't understand. Also, side note, what's up with those other scars that he has?
Now that other random side guy gets promoted and gets to take tragic hero lord guy's job. Did tragic hero lord guy get the 7th nail or not? What? None of this makes any sense.
Oh, it stopped snowing.
And he went... somewhere.
And is doing arts and crafts.
Oh, he's putting on a mask. Wait, is he the tanned beard guy? :O Oh. But why? He’s going into hiding?
Whoa, those statue mountains look AWESOME. 10/10 for scenery!
Wait, who are all those people fighting now? Some red guys with masks. And they're falling off the edge like lemmings. And some giggly guy on wires.

Oh, end of episode. Ok. So what have I learned? I still don't know who is who. Or why they do the things they do. I don't know how they're connected either. Hmm. But I wanna know who stopped the whip. Probably smirky guy, I guess. But, in any case, the last shot makes me wanna continue watching. Cheap trick, but it works. Yes, definitely gonna keep watching!

The Mystrade Treatise
I am long, long out of the Sherlock fandom, but I still have a soft spot for mystrade after ~ 7 odd years (the only thing I really cared about in the show), so when a friend asked about mystrade I hit them with a spontaneous 2000 word block of text. I thought I’d share it as an homage to the still quietly existing community of mystrade shippers out there. Basically, in this essay I will argue for my interpretation of how the BBC TV show Sherlock (2012) establishes an implied relationship between Mycroft, (The Government) and Lestrade (The Force) in the subtext. This analysis will be broken down to two parts: 1) show chronology / their history and 2) their compatibility, which can be further split into 2a) personalities and 2b) external circumstances. 
(The beginning is the only formal(ish) part of - I’m calling it a treatise -, the rest of the piece is written in “I typed it all in messenger app” style. This all came out off the top of my head, so if you think I’m missing something I’m open to the callout)
TL;DR: I’m still mystrade trash and I’m pulling the receipts on mystrade canon
1) Their history - it's clear they know each other and are in communication with each other since the very beginning - and very likely even before - the events of the show. Just a show tidbit, the ending of the pilot episode has Lestrade watch John and Sherlock walk away happily staring into each other's eyes and tell Donovan about their potential as partners, whereas the actual first episode replaces him with Mycroft talking to his assistant Anthea, which shows their character parallels. In one aspect, their role as "aggravated older guardian" is a shared one and one that - rationally, but in fanon - allows them to commiserate with other another. Also, Mycroft kidnaps John in his very first day of him meeting Sherlock, so reasonable to conclude he did the same to Lestrade, so they've clearly met. And, I believe it's canon that Lestrade helped Sherlock with his drug problem, so he's clearly run into Mycroft, whether it's because his brother's OD'd or found with possession or whatever whatever. The possibilities are endless.
We have hints of them knowing each other throughout the show - in season 2 episode 2 the Hound of Baskerville (I am surprised and appalled I know this off by heart instead of more important things), the duo meets Lestrade in a tavern where he's clearly back from holiday and when Sherlock eggs him by basically calling him Mycroft's lackey, he, aggrieved, says "I don't just do what your brother tells me", which is a line I still unfortunately remember over 5 years later, and that is the first precedent set in canon that they clearly communicate. We can interpret this line, given the circumstances, that Mycroft asked him to cut his vacation short to go check up on his brother, and Lestrade, being whipped, was like fine.
This is mere speculation, but in that mini episode, Many Happy Returns, Lestrade is listening to Anderson go on about his conspiracy theories on how Sherlock is still alive, and at the end of it he passes a newspaper article about Sherlock, and he smiles at it like he KNOWS he's still alive somewhere even though he just walked out calling Anderson on his bullshit and dismissing his theories, and I like to interpret that as Mycroft told him Sherlock's still alive. Plus, when Sherlock greets him after his two year absence, the way Lestrade reacts is less “am I seeing a ghost because you’re supposed to be dead” and more “you’re finally back I already know you were alive because my boyfriend Mycroft told me”. 
The first time we see them in frame together (in the mystrade community this is famously known as the 29 frames moment because they only showed up for - 29 frames, like 2 seconds) was in season 3 episode 3, where Sherlock goes missing and everyone looks for him in the hidey holes they know of. Lestrade is seen in Mycroft's office while Mycroft tells him about potential hiding spots. Honestly he did look hella dismissive and rude but you know what? Everyone was stressed. But this shows not only is Lestrade trusted in his secret government offices - and likely this was the secret one because it looked like a cellar - but he trusts Lestrade implicitly. When Sherlock is about to leave on a plane, Lestrade's in a pub watching the TV screen when Moriarty's face is all over it and the very next scene we see Mycroft on the phone with someone getting the news that this was happening. Coincidence? I think NOT - Lestrade called up Mycroft and told him, CANON.
And then there's the Christmas special or whatever it was, about the abominable bride, and yes, this one is set in Sherlock's drug fevered mind, but that only means that, in Sherlock's mind, he sees the two of them as a set (Sherlock ships it confirmed lol). During the whole episode when we see the canon versions of Mycroft and Lestrade they are together as a unit. When John leaves him, Sherlock's mind goes to the most reliable thing in his life to help him, which is his brother (and his brother's boyfriend) and his friend Lestrade to help him, together. Sherlock asks the two of them to help him dig up a body and they share a Look, which is clearly Mycroft's way of asking Lestrade to do the dirty work of actually digging and Lestrade resignedly concedes because there is no other way to analyse the Look, and in the next scene we see Sherlock and Lestrade digging in a grave while Mycroft holds up a lantern because Mycroft doesn't like legwork and Lestrade, clearly his boyfriend in Sherlock's mind, understands this and is willing to accommodate.
And then we have the whole of S4, or as I like to call it, Johnlock hell but mystrade victories!, because in s4e1 when Mary is shot in the aquarium, the first person they look at is each other, indicating they take some level of comfort or seek it out from one another in a room full of other people, also the two of them arrived together so they clearly coordinated, also when the gun was lifted Mycroft looks shocked and steps back a bit while Lestrade moves forward in a “ready to step in” protective gesture, and this all happened in the same frame, and there are gifsets of this happening, and everyone was quietly screaming (Johnlockers in pain, mystrade shippers in "look at them sharing a frame together look at these scraps we're getting"). In the second ep we don't see them together but we do see Mycroft getting hit on by Lady Smallwood and he looks hella uncomfortable about it, while Lestrade is talking with another detective and Sherlock shoots him down telling him she's not the one (because clearly we all know who is the one and Sherlock knows it's his brother).
Oh yeah also jumping back to S3, Mycroft is saying no one can match him and he sees everyone as goldfish but Sherlock is like oh really and was lowkey concerned about him and that's how the mystrade fandom got this whole goldfish thing and it's adorable (special shout out to duchessclovery ‘s masterful fanvid romcom series A Fish Called Greg), and in the wedding ep Sherlock calls Mycroft to attend the wedding but he refuses, and Sherlock says "specter in the feast" to entice him and I like to interpret that as him lowkey jabbing him with a *in*spector in the feast because Lestrade was there looking tired and lonely throughout the whole ep lmaaaaaaaaaaaaao.
Anyway back to S4E2, Mycroft is getting hit on, Lestrade is the most tired we've ever seen him, Sherlock is trying to waive off Lestrade's suitors to save him for his brother. Why is Lestrade so tired? Yes, he's questioning a suspect or something, but also! maybe it's related to his love interest getting hit on, who knows???? And lastly, the last ep of S4, the golden era of mystrade, at the very end of the episode after we've seen Mycroft at his most vulnerable, Sherlock asks Lestrade to "take care of him (Mycroft). he's not as strong as he seems". This was an explicit request by Sherlock, addressing Lestrade correctly for the first time, to take care of his brother, and Lestrade says yes. Of course I will. S4 ended with the promise of the him taking care of Mycroft and honestly I don't care about the entire episode except that part
 2)    A: their personalities: so, Mycroft, as his colleagues know him, is ~ the ice man ~. He's hard to know, even harder and more stubborn and isolated than his brother, and on top of that he's like, contractually obligated under his top secret government job to not be known. That makes him, and this is canon as Sherlock discussed his loneliness with him in S3, even more lonely than his brother, and probably, as much as he likes to think himself more accommodating than his brother and he can definitely pretend for the sake of appearances, more difficult to deal with than Sherlock if he really sets his mind to it. But he's not a complete block of ice - after all, ice can melt - and he has soft spots for his family, esp. his unruly little brother, and by extension (maybe more necessity than real care, but still) the people his brother affiliates with. Because Sherlock is so tricky to deal with, I believe he has a soft spot for people who share that softness for his spiky sibling, and no one cares for Sherlock as he does except for Mrs Hudson, John, and Lestrade. Lestrade's done it for even longer than John, and in the show plays a somewhat paternal figure to Sherlock despite him causing him even more stress sometimes than solving cases for him would relieve. Lestrade is shown to drop everything to help Sherlock when he needs it, and is considered one of his best friends when Moriarty put a sniper on each of Sherlock's closest acquaintances (Lestrade was a target). Lestrade always saw the good in Sherlock despite everything, and believed he could be great. Very few sees the same potential, or shows that level of kindness for - lets be honest here - someone we would want to kick in real life. Lestrade's kindness and patience, enough to deal with Sherlock, surely can be extended to involve Mycroft, as Mycroft's protectiveness extends somewhat to Sherlock's friends.
And this is not a one way street of just Lestrade being kind and accepting. The people Sherlock surrounds himself with appear dull, and have "normal" lives, but secretly either have a florid past (Mrs Hudson) (and her present with the race car and her quick thinking when the flat gets ransacked) and/or crave adventure and danger and intrigue (John) (Molly). Lestrade is the probably the same. He seems aggravated by Sherlock but still like him a whole lot and truly care for him, and you don't go into policing if not for some kind of excitement. He has a failed marriage with his wife who boringly cheated on him with a PE teacher, like how predictable and cliche, and they broke up. Lestrade is loyal, and he wants to fix things, but in the end it doesn't work out. The show doesn't really tell us why, but given what we know of his work and his habits, he probably spends way too much time on the job and in part, neglected his home life. That isn't to say the cheating his wife did can be condoned, nor was it justified, but it does tell us that Lestrade is a workaholic who craves excitement and adventure which explains his attachment to Sherlock. Who else can match that with him in a relationship? Another workaholic who surrounds himself in government intrigue and MI6 bullshit cloak and daggers who also share a soft spot for the most annoying detective consultant, of course!!! For all we know from the show, Mycroft is Lestrade's one constant relationship outside of work. Their common interest is keeping their shared loved ones safe. Beyond that, even though Mycroft feels bored by everyone because "no one is as smart as i, hohoho", Sherlock used to be the same but he found John. We see Lestrade able to hold his own against Sherlock sometimes too, and he is a detective inspector, so as much as Sherlock likes to call him dumb we know that Lestrade's actually pretty smart. If he can hold up his own against Sherlock, he can hold up his own against Mycroft. Mycroft needs someone with the patience to go through all his bullshit, and Lestrade needs someone smart and interesting and protective, because as a protector himself sometimes you forget you need someone to protect you in turn. And that is basically their whole thing - two fierce guardians, trying to protect the world, finding they also need protection, and finding it in each other (end of season 4). Also there's this scene where Lestrade is sitting by his desk with his feet propped up while he eats a donut and says "not my division" which looks exactly like this scene where Mycroft is sitting by his desk with his feet propped up looking smug, or as the mystrade shippers like to call it, "boyfriends picking up each other's behaviours". Essentially, the johnlock relationship sort of parallels the mystrade relationship in that we have a smartass, spiky, secretly vulnerable one paired with a badass, patient, relatively more sunny one. But more mature. And also preferable. The two of them share some kind of relationship that has reached the point of nonverbal understanding, as we can see in their quiet glances towards each other during the few times we see them on screen together, that requires a level of trust and time. 
2)     B: compatibility in external circumstances - this is a short one, it's mostly that they're both workaholics who needs someone to understand their unpredictable work schedules, and also how minimal their social life can get being a) married to work and b) work can be classified and you can't tell anyone about your case files / government coverups. No one could understand the need for secrecy and getting up in the middle of the night for a case/subterfuge than Mycroft and Lestrade, as their career roles work in tangent with each other. And they share (1) chaotic child between the two of them, so they just. get it when one receives a call telling them to fish this loud annoying bitey man child out of the Thames. Their jobs get in the way of establishing close relationships, so who better to relate to than another who live the same kind of life and can understand?

omg thank you so for these hon!! (I realized that I still haven’t answered your last question from like last week alkhsjkss hopefully I’ll answer that soon as well). anyways, now onto the questions.
1. I literally CANNOT choice just one favorite song. like I even have a hard time choosing several lmao akjhskjshjs. like my music taste is ALL over the place and I have so many different kinds of favorites. ALSO my mind is like completely blank now alhsjhskjsh i’m sorry i’m like this lmao. anyways, some current fave songs are: of course all of the jatp soundtrack (since this questions isn’t asking which is my fave of them imma say ALL of them, although Wake Up is always right up there). There’s Some To You by BANNERS (which I’m currently listening to rn) which has been my current fave for like the past two years or so lol. and i just love their entire discography). also of course all the songs from folkore. also strange birds by birdie. i’ve loved this song for years but i’ve listened to a lot recently since i have it both on my juke playlist and my novel playlist. OH and another fave I’ve loved for years that i’ve been listening to more recently again (both on my playlists AND watching vids) is The Night We Met. bc....reasons (for a certain ship from a certain show that’s ending lol idk why i’m being mysterious about this.). oh also ready now by dodie (which is also in my book’s playlist. also all of dodie’s discography in general). )anyways, sorry this is so long lol, but yeah these are some of my forever faves that i’ve been currently loving (I have weird music taste I know lol)
2. OH GOSH this is SO hard bc there’s SOO many fantastic lines. There’s like great inspirational ones, and then hilarious ones, and of course fantastic romantic/shippy lines as well as found family/friendship line. (and i’ll talk about their FANTASTIC lyrics in the next question). but imma go with the first line that popped into my mind which is a sorta inspirational one that goes something like “I think moving on comes from the inside.” something like that. I just really love that line and it really touched my heart when I first heard it (and every time I’ve heard is since). It’s a very important statement imho and it really helps show part of the theme or at least Julie’s theme/journey of her grief and moving on. 
3. THIS IS EVEN HARDER. but imma live up to my url and say a lyric form Perfect Harmony (tbh I feel like I don’t talk about this incredible song enough since it is my url for a reason). I’ve used so many different lyrics from that song for different things (like for both of my juke playlist cover and my juke moodboard to my series of one shots on ao3 that i never continued smh) and they’re just SOO GOOD and madi and charlie deserve all of the praise for it. so imma go with

I also would like to mention that like EVERY single lyric in Wake Up is SOOO freaking inspirational and deserve to be inspirational quotes that people use and help me SO much and also are my favorite lyrics. 
4. gosh this is even HARDER than the previous questions since there’s SOOO many incredible parallels. I mean just look at that AMAZING gifset series where it shows all of those parallels between the songs. Not to mention all of the numerous amount of story/scene parallels. Like my goodness, this show is parallels galore which is what I LIVE for. Since this post is already so long, I’m just gonna stick with one and talk about the classic Julie helping the boys feel alive again/literally bringing them to live in some capacity and the boys bringing Julie back to life. Her relationship with them is obviously the most important one on the show, and it’s just so incredibly beautiful to me how what helped Julie started to heal/’wake up’ and get back into music was these three ghosts who through her were able to play music again. She helped them and they helped her and through her love for them they were saved from Caleb’s curse and stronger than before. Their bond is so incredibly beautiful and magical, and it starts with Julie listening to them for the first time (which is presumably the first time that she has listened to music since her mom passed) which brings them back to the real world and able to connect to music again. Which in turn brings her back to life and connect to music. And through helping each other reconnect to music and being ‘brought back to life’, they’re able to create this extraordinary bond that transcends death. Anyways, I kinda got carried away there. My point, is the parallels of bringing each other back to life is my favorite bc it pretty much summarizes their relationship/story and what this story is about.

Kyle tried really hard not to run. Running attracted attention and that was the last thing he needed right now. 
It took everything in him to slow his feet down to a gentle speed walk as he hurried through the halls to Liz’s lab. If he was almost running by the time he barreled though the door, well no one was around to see it.
The door bounced off the wall when he shoved it open and Kyle froze when he everyone turned to stare at him. Apparently there was an alien convention in Liz’s lab and no one had told him. 
“Oh thank god, you’re all here,” he gasped as he took them all in. He’d come for Liz’s help but he’d been planning to call on Max, Isobel, and Michael almost immediately after. “Alex is in trouble.”
Michael, who had stayed sitting when the other three stood at Kyle’s abrupt entrance, shot to his feet and was halfway across the lab before Kyle could blink. “Where is he?”
“Flint has him. Or Jesse does. Or hell one of the other freaks he calls brother, I don’t actually know.”
“What?” Kyle almost took a step back at the venom in Michael’s voice but he held firm.
“Flint just came to talk to me at the bunker. Apparently the evil Manes’ raided Alex’s cabin and found the piece of space ship he had. They took him with them and they’re demanding the rest of the ship if we want Alex back.” He turned to Liz, ignoring everyone’s shocked ‘space ship?’ as Michael shoved past him and disappeared down the hall. Kyle knew he was probably running off straight into the lion’s den half-cocked without a plan but he didn’t have time to worry about him right now. Even if that’s exactly what Alex would prefer he do. “Liz, can you find some way to track down the rest of the ship? Alex only had the one piece and I don’t even know where to begin looking for the rest.”
Liz started to nod then stopped. “I don’t know. I didn’t even know he had a piece of a ship.” Max and Isobel exchanged surprised looks, obviously also in the dark about that. “If I had his piece, maybe I could find a way to track down the rest? Or maybe they could,” she waved a hand at the Evans twins, “but without it, I’m not sure what I can do. Are you sure he only ever had the one piece? Alex isn’t stupid. If he had more than one piece, he wouldn’t keep them together.”
“Are you sure Flint was telling the truth?” Max asked. “Who knows if they actually have Alex.”
Kyle pulled out his phone and pulled up the picture Jesse Manes had sent him while he’d been talking to Flint. It was of Alex sitting on a concrete floor, his arms wrenched behind his back and blood dripping down his face. His right leg was missing, the prosthetic still sitting next to his bed at the cabin.
Liz cursed when he showed her the picture. “Okay, I’ll think of something. Maybe Maria can get a read on it and track something down?” Kyle shrugged. He had never been clear on how Maria’s psychic powers worked but if Liz thought she could do it, Kyle wasn’t going to doubt her. “Course it would be easier if she had the first piece to get a good read on the ship’s energy but maybe she can manage without it.” Liz pulled out her phone as she spoke and called Maria.
“Iz, can you try the same thing?” Max asked as Liz turned away to talk to Maria. “It’s ours, right?” He directed to Kyle. Kyle shrugged. Alex had never specified its origin but he assumed it came from the only known alien species on Earth. 
“I’m not a fucking bloodhound, Max,” Isobel snapped. “I get into people’s minds, I don’t track down missing ships.”
“Okay,” Liz turned back to the group. “Maria thinks she might be able to help if she can get Isobel to work with her. Something about a psychic energy from the same place of origin or something, I’m not sure.”
“But she can help?” Kyle clarified.
“She’s gonna try,” Liz said firmly. Kyle could only imagine how determined Maria was. She wasn’t a woman to let down her friends. Especially not Alex, and especially not after the fiasco that had been her abysmal attempt at a relationship with Michael Guerin. The two of them at lasted all of a month before imploding in spectacular fashion but the damage was taking a lot longer to recover from.
Liz grabbed her jacket and purse and shooed them out of the lab. “We’re meeting her at the cabin.”
Somehow, the group made it out of the hospital without attracting too much attention. His phone rang just as Kyle slid behind the wheel of his car. He thought about ignoring it but he pulled it out in case it was one of the Manes’.
He almost dropped the phone in shock when Michael’s name flashed on the screen. 
“Guerin?” Kyle answered trepidatiously. He didn’t know how much trouble the man could’ve gotten himself into this quickly but whatever it was, he wouldn’t be surprised. 
“Get over to Sanders’ now,” Michael barked and then hung up.
Kyle stared at the phone before glancing up to see Liz and Max’s cars peel out of the parking lot. He really should follow them out to the cabin to meet Maria but he knew Michael would never be cavalier about Alex’s life or safety and if he needed Kyle at the scrapyard, it had to be important. With a groan, Kyle pulled out of the parking lot and turned towards Sanders’ away from Alex’s cabin.

“What the fuck?” It was all Kyle could manage to say when he pulled up to Michael’s trailer to see the glass structure sitting on the ground. The surface glowed with a myriad of colors and Kyle could clearly see where Alex’s missing piece would fit into the side.
It was the ship. It was the rest of the entire goddamn ship.
He looked up at Michael. “What the fuck? You’ve had this the whole time?”
Michael shrugged. “Alex gave me the last piece but we decided it would be safer if he kept it so no one could get the whole thing.” He opened the trunk of Kyle’s car and carefully lifted the ship off the ground and guided it into the car. “Take it to Flint. I’d go but-”
“But they’d just take you in his stead,” Kyle finished. Or kill you, he left unsaid. He knew none of the aliens could go near the Manes’, no matter how much Michael may want to.
“Why didn’t you say anything?” Kyle asked as he watched Michael fuss about.
“Why would I?” Michael slammed the trunk shut. “It was my goddamn ship. It didn’t matter until today. And now I’m telling you.” He walked over to Kyle and shoved him towards the car when Kyle stood gaping at him. “Go get Alex.”
Kyle shook himself out of his surprise and nodded frantically as he got into the car. “Yeah. Yeah, I’ll get him. I promise.”
Michael nodded and shoved his hands into his pockets as he stepped out of the way of the car. Kyle didn’t look back as he tore out of the scrapyard and towards the bunker, one hand already dialing Flint’s number as he drove.

The exchange was comically simple. Kyle spent twenty minutes getting increasingly anxious while he waited for Flint before the man rolled up in a large military Humvee and Alex practically threw himself out of the backseat. Flint got out of the car rolling his eyes and dropped two crutches on the ground next to his brother but didn’t help him up.
“Where’s the ship?” Flint barked, pulling Kyle’s attention away from Alex.
“Don��t answer that,” Alex cut Kyle off.
Kyle waved towards the car behind him anyway. He wasn’t made for shit like this, honestly. Michael had handed the ship over without a second thought so far be it from Kyle to second guess that decision for him.
Flint stalked towards the trunk and Kyle hurried over to help Alex to his feet.
“What the hell are you doing Kyle?” Alex hissed. “You can’t just fake a space ship.”
“I’m not,” Kyle assured him. “It’s the real thing.”
Alex started to scoff when he froze, his eyes fixed on his brother as Flint rounded the car with the ship cradled in his hands. It was large enough that Kyle had assumed it was heavy but Flint carried it like it was nothing. 
“How did you get that?” Alex whispered.
“He gave it to me,” Kyle answered, careful, not to say Michael’s name. 
Alex stared at him. “He- he gave it to you?” He sounded mystified.
Kyle’s eyebrows narrowed. “Yeah. I-” He stopped when Flint walked over to them.
“You okay?” He asked Alex.
Alex’s face turned to stone. “Fucking peachy, Flint.”
Flint looked hurt for a moment before he steeled his own features. “The leg should be at the cabin,” he told Alex. “We didn’t touch it.”
“How generous.”
Flint looked like wanted to say something else but eventually he just nodded and left without a word.
The second the Humvee was out of sight Alex turned on Kyle. “He just fucking gave it to you?!”
Kyle started walking towards his car. “I went to Liz to see if she could somehow track down the rest of the ship and Michael was there. He left while I was talking to Liz but then he called me a little while later and told me to meet him at Sanders’. When I got there the ship was just sitting there. He put it in the car and told me to go get you.”
Alex hadn’t moved from where Kyle left him. “He just gave it to you...” he repeated softly.
“Yeah,” Kyle told him unnecessarily. 
Alex blinked a few times and then suddenly seemed to remember where he was. He made his way slowly over to the car and got in. “Take me to Sanders’.” He ordered once he had the door closed.
“I feel like I should take you to the hospital first,” Kyle replied even as he pulled out and turned towards the scrapyard. Alex was already shaking his head before Kyle finished speaking.

Alex waited until Kyle had driven away to say anything. Part of him wanted Michael to speak first but he knew he’d be waiting a while for that and today, he was just impatient to wait that long.
“You gave him your ship!?” 
Michael looked surprised. “Yeah?”
“It’s your fucking ship, Michael. Why would you just hand that over?”
“Because your fucking father and brother were holding you hostage.” Michael had been walking towards him but stopped just out of reach. “What did you expect me to do?”
“Not give up your ship!” Alex huffed. “You were working on that for over ten years! It was your life plan or whatever.”
“So? Antar’s gone, that’s what Noah said.”
Alex glared at him. “Like you believe everything Noah said to you.” They’d had many conversations on the subject and Alex knew Michael took everything the man had told them with a grain of salt. It was just too hard to trust the word of a man who’d spent almost a decade lying to all of them. They’d even talked about the continued existence of Antar. Alex knew that Michael was holding on to the dream that his home planet was still out there. “And fine, even if you suddenly think Antar is really gone, that ship was all you had of your home planet.”
“So?” Michael repeated.
“So?! How could you just hand that over to my father?” Alex shouted. “Who knows what he’s going to do with it?”
“What are you saying, Alex? You wanted me to leave you there when I had the means to get you out?”
“I just- I don’t understand how you could just hand that over.”
Michael stared at him before laughing harshly. “Fuck me, Alex. It was easy. It was you or the ship.” He shook his head and half turned away so he wasn’t looking at Alex. “Not really a choice at all, really.”
Alex’s breath caught in his throat and he swore his heart stopped beating for a second. Michael had always been proud of his alien heritage, proud and oh so goddamn curious. From the second he’d showed Alex the ship, Alex had known that one day Michael would leave Earth. It wasn’t a hypothetical, it was a fact. 
It was why giving Michael the last piece of the ship had been so painful. When Michael had given it back the very next day and told Alex to keep it, Alex had felt hopeful for the first time that maybe, just maybe, Michael might be considering staying. Never in a million years did he think he would give up the whole thing, though. 
And certainly not for Alex. 
“Michael-”
He didn’t know what he could say honestly. The last time they’d spoken about them, Michael had told him he didn’t love him. And unlike when he’d yelled the words at Caulfield, Alex had believed him. It had hurt like nothing he’d ever felt before, but he’d believed him.
But this. This was-
Michael sighed heavily. “Did you really think I would keep the ship and let you be tortured by your family?”
“I don’t know what I thought.”
Michael shook his head. “I know we’ve had our issues,” Alex barely contained his snort, “but you’ve gotta know there’s nothing I wouldn’t do for you, Alex. You’ve gotta know that.”
“You said you don’t love me,” Alex said quietly.
“I thought you said I was a miserable liar.” 
“You are. And yet- I believed you. You weren’t lying.”
Michael smiled sadly. “Of course I was lying. I love you. I’ve always loved you.”

Lean on Me
Summary: After they don’t get the results that they hoped for with radiation, Michael starts to consider brain surgery to treat his cancer. The aftermath leaves May struggling, afraid to lose her dad. Buck is worried, determined to make May see that she’s not alone.
Or, the one where Buck is a big brother to May.
Author’s note: I was scrolling through tumblr the other day and saw this gifset of Bobby/Buck after Bobby’s scare in 3a, and then Michael/May in 3b - it inspired me to write this. I hope you enjoy it.

“Hey, Chim, do you mind if I take home some of this birthday cake for Harry and May?” Bobby asks. He closes the lid to the box that contains the rest of Chimney’s cake from the crew’s small birthday celebration at the firehouse.
“Sure,” Chim says unenthusiastically, pushing the cake around with his fork in disinterest, “knock yourself out.” 
“How are they doing?” Buck looks up from his plate, his gaze settles on Bobby, a look of concern softening his features. “How’s Michael?” 
“Uh,” Bobby hesitates, “he’s upbeat, he’s fighting. Radiation was supposed to be his best shot, now we’re all grappling with putting our hopes on his next best shot, surgery.”
“How are the kids handling it?” Eddie asks from where he sits beside Chimney at the table, turning his attention to their captain. 
“I think Harry’s doing okay, it’s May I’m worried about. She’s got a better understanding of what’s going on,” Bobby explains.
“She’s the oldest sibling,” Chim interjects, “older siblings don’t get to be blissfully ignorant, they have to be the realists.” They continue to talk as they clear the rest of the mess, and Hen joins everyone at the table.
Buck purses his lips, and he hesitates briefly. In every way that matters, the one-eighteen has become his family over the last few years. Aside from his family at the firehouse, Maddie is all he has. So the blood that courses through his veins is one-eighteen strong. That also means that his concern for the youngest members of the one-eighteen family runs deep. “Is there anything we can do? I mean if there is  anything you can think of that might help, just name it.”
“Thanks, Buck, I appreciate that- I just don’t even know what is the best thing for them right now. If I think of anything, I’ll let you know.”
Buck pauses, then nods his head. “Sounds good, Cap.”

Buck thinks about how he can help the Grant children from the moment the conversation shifts to Karen and Hen fostering. He tries to think of some elaborate way to let May know she’s not alone, that he’s been there. That’s how Buck finds himself standing outside of Bobby and Athena’s home, knocking on their door a few days later.
Bobby pulls open the front door, a look of surprise on his face when he sees Buck. “Hey, Bobby, sorry to drop over unannounced.”
Bobby shakes his head, “Come in.” Buck steps into the house, and Bobby closes the door behind him. 
“So, you’re probably wondering why I’m here.”
“The thought did cross my mind,” Bobby says with a light laugh. “Can I get you something to drink?”
“No, I’m good,” Buck glances around, sees May sitting at the dining room table and, despite the fact that she has earbuds in, talks in a loud whisper to Bobby. “I, uh, I actually came to see May.”
“Oh, wh-” Bobby begins to ask what he has to talk to May about, but stops when Buck looks at him more closely, his intent clear. Bobby leads the way to the dining room and Buck follows. May seems wrapped up in her Instagram feed, and Bobby attempts to draw her attention. “Hey, May? Look who stopped by.”
May forces a tight smile, pulling one of the earbuds out. “Hey,” She moves, as though to put the earbud back in place.
“May,” Buck starts, “I actually came to ask you a favor.” May stops, setting the earbud down on the table, and takes the other one out, before turning her attention to Buck.
“A favor?” She looks at Buck quizzically.
Buck pulls out his cell phone. “I’ve been toying with the idea of getting a cat for weeks, and I just can’t decide which one I want. The shelter has quite a few.” He swipes through the photos and shows them to May.
A small smile tugs at the corner of May’s mouth, “That one is cute.” She motions towards his phone, looking at a gray short-haired kitten.
Buck scratches the back of his head. “Are you busy for the next few hours? Maybe you could come with me? I’m terrible at making decisions.”
“Oh, I don’t know, Buck, I need to do some cleaning before my mom gets back.”
“Go ahead, May. Harry and I have you covered,” Bobby promises as he steps out of the dining room and into the kitchen.
Buck flashes a smile, “So, what do you say?” He looks at May hopefully. He really wants her to come out with him. Being a teenager is not easy, and being a teenager with an ill family member is even harder. He thinks back to what Chim said earlier, about older siblings having to face the truth and not be blissfully ignorant. Although Chim was referencing his current situation with Albert, he knows that what was said earlier wasn’t untrue either. 
May is silent for a minute, and he is sure that she’s going to say no. “Alright, I guess a couple of hours couldn’t hurt. I’m just going to go grab my purse.” Buck beams.
Buck stops in the kitchen where Bobby pretends to be cleaning. Buck rests a light hand on his shoulder. “She’s gonna be alright, Bobby,” he promises.
Bobby breathes out and turns to look at Buck. He looks like he’s searching for the right words, then finally settles on, “Thank you.”
“Of course,” Buck says, “she’s family.” He steps out of the kitchen so that he can wait at the door for May.
A few minutes later, Buck’s Jeep pulls out of the driveway and onto the road as they head in the direction of the animal shelter. “I appreciate you helping me out.”
May locks the screen on her phone and lets out a small sigh at his words. “You don’t have to pretend this is me helping you out with something, Buck.” She levels him with a serious look, which he catches out of the corner of his eye. Buck almost chuckles because it is so clear at that moment that she is Athena’s daughter.
“I’m not pretending anything.”
May sighs. “So you’re telling me that Bobby didn’t put you up to this? Or my mom?”
“No, they didn’t,” Buck says honestly, then adds, “but they are worried about you.”
“I’m not going to break. You didn’t need to take me out just to make sure that I’m okay.” May says with a roll of her eyes, glancing out the passenger window.
“Not  just  to make sure you’re okay,” Buck says and then chuckles, “I really need someone to help me with this.” He reminds her, laughing lightly as he pulls the Jeep into the parking lot.
May looks down at her phone, fidgets with the edge of her phone case. “They told us a few days ago that the radiation didn’t work. Not like they were hoping for.” Buck remains silent and now that he’s parked, he turns his attention fully to May. “He’s going to have brain surgery, and they don’t even know if it’s going to help,” May’s voice wavers, “what if it doesn’t?”
“You can’t think like that, May. You can’t immediately settle on the worst-case scenario. I know you’re scared. I-I understand,” Buck stumbles with his words for a brief moment. “If you are all convinced that he can’t do this, then he won’t,” Buck says gently. “But, if you are all convinced that he can, then there is still hope.”
May swallows, moves her hand to dab at her tears. “How could you understand?” 
The silence is heavy for a moment and then, “My grandpa, he died from brain cancer when I was a kid. It was really hard to watch him go through that. The hardest part was when he gave up on himself.”
“He died anyway,” May says stricken.
“Things were different then, they didn’t have the advancements that they do now, May. But when we stopped believing that he could fight it, so did he. Maybe he would have died anyway, but I wonder how much longer he would have had if he saw us believe in him instead.” Buck reaches over and places his hand on top of May’s, giving her hand a gentle squeeze.
May forces a smile, “I don’t want him to give up. I want him to fight.” 
“Good,” Buck smiles, “now are you ready to help me pick out the perfect furry creature to destroy my place?”

May spends too much time researching on the internet. She knows that looking at the statistics and worst-case scenarios aren’t going to do much in the way of calming her fears. She knocks, then unlocks the door and steps into her dad’s apartment.
“Hey, this is a surprise. What are you doing here?” Michael asks.
May frowns. “I didn’t think I needed a reason.”
“Yeah,” Michael draws out, “but you usually have one.” He begins shuffling around some papers on the table, but May still sees his living will lying on the top, before he’s able to shuffle it under some nondescript papers.
“I knew it. I knew you were lying,” May says as she shakes her head in disbelief.
“May,” Michael starts, “this isn’t-”
“You’re updating your will. People do that when they’re dying.” She says plainly, hurt and worry evident on her face. Was it even worse than she thought?
“And they also do it when they have two children and are about to undergo major surgery.”
“A  risky surgery,” May says from where she is still standing in front of the doorway. “I looked it up.”
“Okay, uh, you’re right,” Michael stands upright, walks around the table and stands in front of his daughter. He pauses briefly once in front of her before motioning to the two chairs that are in front of him. “Okay, let’s sit down.” He sighs, waiting for May to sit in front of him. She does after a moment and as she looks at him, all she can think is that this is her dad and this surgery is risky. There are so many possible scenarios. What if he doesn’t come out of it?
“It is risky,” Michael admits, “and I don’t know what’s going to happen. There are no guarantees here, but without it…” He breathes out slow, steadies himself for his next words as he looks at May. “I could be dead in a year.”
May closes her eyes, lets the words sink in. When she opens them, she looks at her dad distraught, eyes red-rimmed and her lips pressing into a straight line.  “So then why didn’t you tell us? Why did you lie to me and Harry?”
Michael shakes his head, a pained look across his features. “I didn’t want to scare you,” He admits. 
“Aren’t you scared?” Michael lowers his eyes, eyes wet as he considers her question. 
“Yeah.” His voice is barely above a whisper, his nod infinitesimal. Michael looks around helplessly before his eyes settle on May.  “I’m scared of dying. I’m scared of living and being worse off than I am now. And most of all, I am terrified of not seeing you and Harry. That’s why-that’s why I’m doing this, it’s to make sure that you two are taken care of-”
May thinks of her conversation with Buck in his Jeep earlier that day. She remembers him talking about his family losing hope and how his grandfather gave up too. He declined so quickly after that. She doesn’t want the same thing for her dad. She needs him to still hope.
“Stop,” May says sternly. “Stop doing that. Planning for your death, you can’t think like that. You still have options, and as long as you still have options and have us, there’s still hope.” Her eyes settle on Michael.
“When did you grow up on me?” He asks with a deep laugh, looking at her in awe.  “I love you.”
“I love you too,” She says softly as Michael embraces her in a tight hug, and she closes her eyes in the embrace.

Buck hears a knock on the door and shifts from where he is lounging on the couch. “That was quick,” he says as he pulls open the door for their takeout order. “May.”
May shifts under his gaze, “I-I hope this is okay?” She starts, pressing her lips together tightly, her eyes wet with unshed tears. “I didn’t know where else to go.”
“Oh, May. Of course it’s okay,” Buck says, and in an instant his arms are around her slim frame, drawing her to him in a comforting hug. He lets out an even breath and kisses the top of her head. “Let’s get you inside.” 
Buck leads her into his apartment, and she sits down on the couch next to him. Buck remains silent, knowing that May will say something when she’s ready. “This is all my fault,” she cries, folding into herself as her body shakes.
“Woah, woah, woah…” Buck reaches an arm out and pulls her over until she is pressed against his side. “Whatever it is, I’m sure it’s not.”
“It is,” May says through tears, allowing herself to lean into Buck for comfort. Gently, he brushes the hair away from her face so that he can see her face more clearly.
“Can you tell me what happened?” 
“After you dropped me off at home the other day I want to see my dad,” May says. “He was updating his will. I told him that I’d been reading up on his surgery and that I knew how risky it was. But I thought about what you said, about your grandfather. So I encouraged him to fight. I told him that as long as he still has options, as long as he still has us that he still has hope.”
“There is still hope,” Buck agrees.
“He-he’s not going to get the surgery. And radiation didn’t work. So he’s going to  die and it’s going to be my fault, Buck!”
“Hey,” Buck’s forehead creases as he looks down at May, this girl that he has come to look at like she’s his little sister. She is coming apart at the thought of losing her dad, and Buck can’t say that he blames her. He thinks back to Bobby’s scare not that many months ago. He remembers the fear well.
“This isn’t your fault, none of this is.” Buck continues and draws her snugly against his chest, then kisses the top of her head. “And just because Michael chooses not to get the surgery, it doesn’t mean he doesn’t have options. Did he say why he didn’t want the surgery?” His voice is gentle as he looks down at May, who has visibly calmed down.
“He thinks the surgery is too risky. He said he doesn’t want to focus on his death anymore, he wants to focus on living, however long he has. ”
“It is risky. The good news is that there are trials and other options to look at. Maybe he’ll be able to get into one of those. And either way, we aren’t going to lose hope.” May breathes evenly as her eyes close.
“I just panicked,” She whispers. “I don’t want him to die.”
“The good news is neither does he.” Buck smiles gently, hearing movement up in the loft. “Hey babe?” He calls out. “Can you bring Sadie down?”
Buck feels May sit upright before he feels scrutinizing eyes on him. “Babe?” Her brow raises. She leans forward, and a grin breaks out on her face as Eddie makes his way down the stairs. “Oh hey, Eddie .” She turns to Buck and smacks him gently across his chest with the back of her hand, then practically hisses. “I knew it!”
“Oh, please. You did not,” Buck says with a roll of his eyes as Eddie chuckles, carrying the kitten over to May who happily scoops her up. There is a knock on the door and Eddie answers, getting their takeout food and setting it on the counter.
“Hey, May,” Eddie calls as he glances up, “we’d love it if you’d stay for dinner.”
“Are you sure?” 
“I’m positive,” Eddie says as he grabs plates from the cupboard, and it’s not lost on May how easily Eddie navigates Buck’s kitchen, how comfortable he seems in Buck’s space.  “You are family and you’re welcome anytime.” Buck and May make their way out to the kitchen with May still snuggling the kitten to her chest.
“So,” Buck motions to the spread of Chinese takeout that Eddie has spread out over the counter, “what do you want?” 
“I want to know when the two of you are going to tell everyone that you’re a couple,” May says with her first genuine smile of the night.
Buck stutters and glances at Eddie who just shrugs his shoulders, smiling in amusement. “When we’re ready,” Buck says carefully.
“That doesn’t sound like an actual time.” May bends down, setting the kitten on the floor before she walks to the sink to wash her hands.
“You’re right, it doesn’t sound like an actual time,” Eddie teases.
“I’m not telling you what to do,” May says as she dries her hands and turns to look at Buck and Eddie. “I’m just saying that life’s too short to not be happy. And life’s too short to not let people be happy for you.”
“She does have a point,” Eddie says, turning his gaze to Buck.
“That she does,” Buck whispers, dipping his head down and placing a quick kiss against his lips before he turns back to May. “We’ll tell them the next time that we see them.” Eddie finds Buck’s hand and interlaces their fingers.
Buck looks at May as she smiles warmly and he wonders if he actually helped her tonight, or if she helped him. One thing they all need to remember is that life is short, and you can never predict what is going to happen tomorrow. Even in the face of tomorrow’s uncertainty, Buck knows that he can face whatever is thrown his way as long as he has his family by his side.

Summary: The universe has a funny way of putting the things you want right in front of you, but just out of reach. Stiles and Y/N have been best friends ever since Scott brought him home, but when Stiles realizes that he might want to be something other than best friends, she leaves to go to some fancy private school up North. After your fight with Isaac, you’d gotten out of the car and started walking without a particular destination in mind. A small part of you kept hoping that he’d come after you and make some grand gesture to make everything better, but he never did. Neither did Scott or Stiles, so clearly they weren’t as worried about you as they’d pretended to be. With the sun setting, though, you knew you had to go home. Being alone in Beacon Hills was dangerous enough, but alone and in the dark? 
You unlocked the front door as quietly as you could and tiptoed into your room. Once your door was closed and you were faced with both familiarity and unawareness, you curled up on your bed and sobbed. You couldn’t go back to the pack after how you ended things and you’d completely ruined what you had left with Scott because you were too stubborn to listen. Although you’d been lonely since coming back, this was the first time you’d felt alone. 
The creaking of your bedroom door caught your attention and you quickly wiped away your tears and sucked in a breath, turning so Melissa couldn’t see your face. “Mom, I’m fine,” you lied with a faltering voice. “I just watched a sad movie and with my hormones-” 
“Can we talk?” Your muscles tensed when you heard Scott’s voice. You nodded and shifted again, listening as he stepped inside and closed the door behind him. The edge of your bed sagged under his weight and he took a deep breath. “I’m sorry I lied to you,” he started gingerly. “This all started like two months ago and I haven’t been able to slow down since. And then you came back and I- I didn’t know what to do. I didn’t want you involved in this. Any of it.” 
You bit your lip and turned to get a better look at him. You took in his tired features as you formulated your response. “Scott, I was already a part of this long before I came back,” you confessed. “Two months ago I was attacked in the woods behind my school. I wasn’t bitten, but it did change me. The reason they kicked me out is because I completely withdrew myself from everything. I spent days locked in my room, not leaving to go to classes or eat or anything.” You took a shaky breath. “The only thing I did was draw them. All over my body in harsh lines, on the walls in deep gashes, on my books-” 
“I didn’t know.” You looked back up to see the exhaustion in his face betrayed by disappointment in himself. He didn’t know you were hurting and yet the first time the two of you had spoken you asked if he was okay. “I didn’t help.” 
You reached forward and held his hand. “It’s not like we were completely honest with each other,” you said gently. “I thought you’d think I was crazy.”
Scott chuckled under his breath and squeezed your hand. “There’s nothing you can say that would make me think you’re crazy,” he smiled. “Can you show me what they looked like? The ones that attacked you.” 
You looked down again but nodded. You went to your desk and pulled out one of your old books - they were too damaged for the school to take back. You watched as Scott worked his way through the pages, taking long looks at each of the different drawings. You wondered if he felt the same fear looking at them that you did.
“You’re pretty good at this,” he said a little breathlessly. “But you shouldn’t have had to go through that. I should’ve protected you. I should’ve-” 
You leaned over and closed the book. “What could you have done, Scott? I was like two hours away and you were human. You couldn’t have protected me even if you knew what was going on.” 
“I know now,” Scott urged hopefully. “And I can protect you now.”
You rolled your eyes at his determination to protect everyone. “Okay,” you conceded eventually. “But this time I get to protect you too, deal?”
“I don’t think that just because you can beat up Stiles means you can protect me,” his joke made your heart stop. You’d hurt Stiles. “But it’s a deal.” After a few seconds of you not answering him, he added, “He’s okay, you know. You should talk to him.” 
“He doesn’t want to talk to me,” you shook your head. That made him roll his eyes. 
“Yeah, he does,” Scott told you. “He spent the whole day complaining about-” he shook his head and took a breath before looking at you. “Tell him what you told me. He’ll understand.” Reluctantly, you nodded and he put a hand up to squeeze your shoulder encouragingly. “Get some sleep. It’ll be okay.” 
You watched as he got up to leave. You weren’t going to tell him but you had to. “Uh, Scott?” you blurted out. “I- I’m not with Derek anymore.” 
He looked like he was going to ask why but decided against it. Instead he said, “Oh. That’s, uh, that’s good to know,” with a goofy smile. You returned it and watched the door come to a close when he left.

So it turned out that the reason no one on Team Scott came looking for you was because everyone was too busy kidnapping Jackson - a terrible decision that never would’ve been acted on had you been part of the team, or at least that’s how you pointed it out to Scott before leaving for the police station that morning. Your leg bounced as you waited, and you were out of your seat as soon as you heard Scott and Melissa arguing. You stopped a few feet away when you saw Stiles and tried to give him an apologetic smile, but he didn’t return your gaze. 
“Then no computer,” Melissa said, snapping your attention back to the two of them. Scott argued that he needed the computer for school and she looked around as she thought of a new punishment. “Then no, uh …” her gaze fell on Stiles. “No Stiles.” 
“What?” Stiles whined, rushing forward to argue. “No Stiles?” He came to a sudden stop when your mom pointed a finger and raised her voice. 
“No Stiles!” she yelled. “And no more car privileges. Give me your keys.” Scott began searching his pockets as she held out her hand, but he wasn’t quick enough. “Give them to me!” she repeated. It hurt to see her frustrated like this. She wasn’t even this mad when she got the call to collect you from Willow Creek. You shrank into the corner as they continued to talk. 
“Okay, you know what, um …” Melissa’s voice was quiet as she spoke as gently as she could. Frustration replaced with guilt over her outburst. “We’ll talk about this at home. I’m gonna go get the car.” She gave you a smile as she walked past, but you could see her heart was breaking. 
“I’m the worst son ever,” Scott declared while moving closer to Stiles. You did the same, though without the added commentary. 
“Well, I’m not exactly winning any prizes either,” Stiles confessed, gesturing vaguely to where Jackson’s dad was berating Noah. You bit your lip as you caught Scott’s eye. 
“I’m gonna go smooth things over with my mom,” he said cautiously. “You guys, uh, you talk.” Subtlety wasn’t his specialty. 
“Yeah, yeah, okay,” Stiles exhaled, looking over at you for the first time since your argument. You smiled but he looked away again as Scott retreated, saying that he’d tell Melissa you’d be a few minutes. “So what did you want to talk about?” he asked, clearly not in the mood for another confrontation. 
“More of an apology than a talk actually,” you corrected lightly. You were fiddling with your hands and avoiding eye contact. “I was upset that you guys were shutting me out, and I-I lashed out. I hurt you and you’ve gotta believe me when I say that’s the last thing I ever wanted.” You stopped to take a breath and still your shaky voice. “And I’m sorry. I felt so alone and they- they gave me a place where I fit. It’s not an excuse and I get if you don’t want to see me again but I-”
“Stop.” Stiles put his hand over your shaky ones, stopping your fidgeting. Old feelings bubbled to the surface as he continued, “You’re gonna unravel that whole sweater.” You smiled and listened to him take a deep breath. “Look, I mean, yeah, you messing up my shoulder didn’t make me feel great but … how could you think I wouldn’t want to see you again? Y/N, you and Scott are my best friends.” 
“I know but Scott didn’t literally twist your arm to get his way in an argument,” you said pathetically and shrugged your shoulders. 
“No, but he did try to kill me,” he replied. “Like more than once.” He used his other hand to scratch his head. “He also, uh, made out with Lydia for this weird power thing.” 
You pulled a face and tried to stop yourself from laughing. “He made out with Lydia?” 
“Hey, don’t laugh!” he pointed a finger at you and then moved his hand to his heart as he feigned offense, which only made you laugh more. “My nine-year-old self was heartbroken.” 
“Mm-hmm,” you hummed, smiling up at him. “I’m sure it took many juice boxes and sleepless naps to get over, huh?”
“Yeah, something like that,” Stiles said quietly, looking down to see his hand still covering yours. He took a breath and pulled it away, taking his warmth with it. “I guess we should head to school.” 
“Yeah, I guess,” you echoed. You looked up at him again. Something was different. “You’re sure we’re good?” 
“Yeah, I’m sure,” he smiled. “See you at school.” 
“See you around, Stilinski.” You touched his arm lightly and added, “Take care of yourself, okay?” 
“God, Y/N, I’ll see you in like half an hour at school. Relax,” he laughed and punched your shoulder playfully, making you roll your eyes and mumble something before walking off. As you did though, you turned to get another look at him. He was watching you and sent you a little wave before you rounded the corner and went to find your family.

“Wait, so what’s my job?” you asked. Deaton had already given Scott the ketamine to sedate Jackson and put Stiles on mountain ash duty, but he hadn’t said anything to you.
“You could, uh … run interference,” Scott said, looking at Deaton and Stiles for confirmation. They didn’t answer.
“Interference,” you repeated, folding your arms over your chest. 
“You know, make sure everything goes smoothly and everyone knows what they’re doing,” Scott explained what he meant while simultaneously giving you absolutely no information about what you actually had to do. 
“Make sure Erica and Isaac don’t kill anyone,” Stiles clarified, making you roll your eyes.
“Yeah, ‘cause I have the necessary skills to keep them in check,” you mumbled. You checked your attitude when you met Deaton’s eye, he didn’t say anything but it made you realize that at least you were a part of the team this time. “Okay,” you agreed. “I’ll run interference.”

The plan changed pretty much as soon as it was in motion. Allison had told her dad about Jackson’s murderous tendencies, so the hunters were there as well. Scott got Derek and Boyd to keep them occupied and trusted Isaac to sedate Jackson so he could help with the fight. Despite everything you’d been through with them, he and Erica refused to let you get close to Jackson, and it’s not like you could do anything to the hunters, so you ended up with Stiles and the mountain ash. 
“Is it always like this?” you asked teasingly as you walked along the inner arc of the boundary Stiles was creating. Outside was surprisingly quiet considering the rave inside, gunshots and growling breaking through the night occasionally. 
“Yeah, pretty much,” Stiles answered with a sigh. “Hey, does it look like this bag is getting empty?” He brought it closer to his face to take a look, but before you could answer, he’d poured what was left into his hand. “Crap, crap, crap, cr-” 
“Stiles,” you interrupted. “Calm down.” You put your hands on his shoulders and shook him lightly. He was looking straight at you now and looked extremely freaked out.  
“Calm down?” he repeated. “Y/N, there’s like fifty feet of ground to cover and I’ve got like three sprinkles of magic fairy dust left!” He took a deep breath. “You know what? I’ll call Scott. Scott always knows what to do. I’ll call him.” 
He started fumbling for his phone and you moved your hand to catch his wrist. “Stiles,” you said gently. He stopped moving. “You don’t need to call Scott. You’ve got this. Plus, he probably won’t answer anyway.” 
“Y/N,” Stiles repeated, mimicking your tone of voice. “We don’t have enough mountain ash. Scott will help us.” 
“Stiles!” you sighed exasperatedly, dropping your hand. “This is your job. It’s all on you. You’ve gotta believe you can do this. Scott believes you. Deaton believes in you. I believe-” You were cut off by him pressing his lips to yours. The hand that was still on his shoulder moved up to cradle his neck, your fingertips lightly covering his jaw. “What was that for?” you breathed after he’d pulled away. 
“For believing in me.” Stiles sounded more surprised than you did that he’d kissed you. He cleared his throat and looked down at the mountain ash. “I, uh, have a thing to do. So I’m-” 
“Yeah, say no more,” you took a few steps back. You watched him turn and take hesitant steps away, and you moved your hand up to your lips. That was … odd. Kissing you was a frantic action, but the actual kiss was soft, tentative. A small moment that went on forever. You were probably reading into it because you used to have a crush on him, but this was Stiles. Stiles! And after everything you’d been through- 
Your train of thought was interrupted by his cheering. “We did it!” He clapped and jumped on the hood of a car in his excitement, setting off its alarm. You winced and held out your hand for him to take as he ran over. He grabbed your hand and pulled you forward as he ran to meet Erica and Isaac at the rendezvous point.

Stiles opened the storage room door and immediately put his hands out defensively to block your way in. The sudden stop made you walk into him. “Uh, no, no, no!” he exclaimed when Erica almost attacked him. “Just us. It’s just us.” You peered over his shoulder before the two of you came inside and caught Isaac’s gaze. Stiles told them not to freak out as you turned to close the door behind you. 
Turning back, you looked over to where Jackson was passed out on a metal folding chair. It didn’t even look like he was breathing. “Is he okay?” you asked, aiming a finger in his direction. 
“Well,” Isaac exhaled and walked closer to him. “Let’s find out.” He raised his hand up with his claws out and moved to slice Jackson’s chest, but he caught Isaac’s forearm and tightened his grip. You rushed closer when you heard bone cracking and saw Isaac begin to twist down. You wrapped your arms around him and pulled him back to the group. He sat on a crate and you moved your arm up to his shoulder, using your other hand to examine his injury. 
“Okay, no one does anything like that again, okay?” Stiles warned, waving his finger around to emphasize his point. You rolled your eyes at him and rubbed Isaac’s back gently. The two of you hadn’t really spoken since you broke things off, but you’d made a silent agreement to look out for one another. Stiles didn’t know about that, though, and just noticed how close the two of you were again.
“I thought the ketamine was supposed to put him out,” Isaac groaned, still very clearly in pain. Your comfort couldn’t do much to ease his suffering. 
“Yeah, well, apparently this is all we’re going to get,” Stiles exhaled. You looked up to see him looking at the two of you and pulled your arm back to your side. Was he jealous? “So let’s just hope that whoever’s controlling him decided to show up tonight.” 
As if on cue, Jackson’s eyes flew open. You sucked in a breath and pointed to Jackson to make sure the others saw it too. 
“I’m here,” Jackson told you all. His voice was distorted and deep. “I’m right here with you.” 
Despite your protests, Stiles moved closer to him. “Jackson, is that you?” he asked. 
“Us,” Jackson answered. “We’re all here.” 
“Are you the one killing people?” Stiles’s voice was just above a whisper. Erica moved closer towards you and Isaac. 
“We are the ones killing murderers,” he corrected. His blank stare at the wall creeped you out, and when Erica was close enough you reached out to hold her hand. 
“So all the people you’ve killed so far-” 
“Deserved it,” Jackson snapped. 
“So we’ve got a little rule book that says you only go after murderers,” Stiles started cautiously. 
“Anything can break if enough pressure’s applied,” Jackson replied. 
“Okay, so the people you’re killing are all murderers, then?” 
“All. Each. Every one.”
“Well, who did they murder?” 
“Me,” Jackson growled.
“Wait. What? What do you mean?” Stiles asked, voice rising slightly. 
“They murdered me!” Jackson yelled. Isaac stood up and moved closer to you and Erica as Jackson started shifting. “They murdered me.” 
“Okay, maybe we should try upping the dose?” you squeaked out, pulling Stiles closer to where the three of you were huddling. You held onto his shoulder protectively.  
“We don’t have anymore,” Isaac answered, holding up the empty bottle as evidence. 
“You used the whole bottle?” Stiles asked, clearly annoyed with him now. You were about to tell them not to argue when Erica started patting Stiles’s arm frantically and pointing to Jackson. He stood up and hissed at you.
Stiles started stammering some words, but you pushed him and Erica towards the door. “Go!” you yelled, pulling Isaac forward and shoving the others. “Go! Get out of here!” You all ran out and Isaac slammed the door behind you, the four of you flattening yourselves against it to keep Jackson inside. 
“Okay, find something to move in front of the door,” Stiles huffed. Wedged in front of Isaac and behind Stiles, you began to look for something but couldn’t see anything. It didn’t matter much anyway, because before you could say anything, Jackson burst through the metal wall and into the nightclub.
“Okay,” you took a deep breath and felt everyone collapse a bit more into each other. “It’s okay. We’re all okay. We’re okay.” The four of you gathered yourselves and shared a look before immediately splitting up to find Jackson. Stiles grabbed your hand and the two of you ran to the front of the building. 
The two of you were arguing over the best way to handle it when Derek strode up. “So we kind of lost Jackson inside, but it’s-” Stiles started telling him as you looked up at Isaac and Erica staring down at the mountain ash. They couldn’t cross it. They were trapped in there with Jackson. “Oh my god!” Stiles exclaimed. “It’s working! Oh, this is-” 
“Stiles, ne quiet,” you warned. You were worried about them and you didn’t even know where the others were. 
“You need to break it,” Derek rushed out. 
“What? Why?” Stiles questioned. 
They started arguing, but as soon as Derek said that Scott was in trouble, you bent down and broke the boundary. He looked at you briefly, for the first time since you’d left the pack, before running off to save your brother.

Derek took Scott to Deaton so Stiles drove you home. Neither of you were talking about what had happened, and you fiddled with your seatbelt to pass the time. When he pulled into the driveway and killed the engine, there was no avoiding it. “So, uh,” you exhaled. “The whole kiss thing-” 
“Was super out of line,” Stiles interrupted, making your heart sink. He regretted it. 
“Yeah, yeah, totally,” you lied, nodding your head. 
“It was a one-time thing-” 
“We were both freaking out-” 
“It’ll never happen again,” Stiles finished. 
“Right, never again,” you echoed before actually realizing what you’d said. He never wanted to kiss you again? You were quiet as you thought, and Stiles didn’t say anything else. “Well, I should, uh- I should head inside,” you started. 
“Yeah, Melissa’s probably bugging out that you guys aren’t home yet.” Stiles’ attempt at humor meant he was at least as nervous as you were. 
“And Noah probably really wants to see you after hearing what happened,” you nodded, unbuckling your belt. 
“Yeah, uh, not so much,” Stiles mumbled. You weren’t sure if you were supposed to hear that, because he looked surprised when you asked why. “He got fired today. Because of me.” 
“Oh, Stiles, that’s really rough,” you said sympathetically. You started reaching for his hand but stopped over the armrest. “Do you know why?”
“His son having a restraining order filed against him didn’t reflect well on the county,” he sighed. The way he said it must have been word for word what Noah had told him. 
“I’m really sorry, Stiles,” you whispered. “I hope it blows over soon.” 
“Yeah, me too,” he said, more to himself than anything. He looked at your hand and then up at you after a second. He didn’t make another move. “Have a good night, Y/N.” 
You smiled. “You too, Stilinski.”

Caroline was breathing hard as Tyler put her down and she spun twice, falling into his arms in a dramatic dip. The crowd went wild, and she smiled when she saw the judges also clapping, Alaric standing up in his chair as he looked at them. She reached to wipe her hair out of her face and caught Klaus's eye from where he was sitting by the judges' table, biting her lip when she saw the look of pure want on his face. She cleared her throat when Tyler elbowed her in the side with a raised eyebrow, blushing when she realized that she'd just given someone off-camera sex eyes on national television.
Well, not just someone.
The tabloids had been weirdly obsessed with her and Klaus's relationship for the two months since they'd gone public considering that they were just dancers on a reality show that was mostly about the contestants anyway. Sure, she and Klaus were fan favorites and both of them had been on hot singles lists for the past few years, but it seemed like it shouldn't be that big of a deal. She'd made the mistake of googling them and found gifsets of them dancing before they were dating on various social media sites with alarmingly dirty captions and comments, and she stopped looking after that. Unfortunately, that shot would definitely make it into someone's thirstblog.
She was barely listening to the judges, just nodding and smiling when the crowd clapped, though she did beam when they received three nines, giving Tyler a proud look at his excited face. They were only one episode off from the finale, her second mirror ball trophy firmly within her reach. Tyler had definitely been an underdog at the start of the season, but she'd whipped him in to shape and she wouldn't be surprised if they walked away with the bragging rights, especially since Klaus got eliminated early.
She escorted Tyler offstage to the greenroom, her heart still beating fast from exertion. She couldn't wait to leave, her mind full of possibilities of the filthy things Klaus would do to her once she left, considering the look on his face.
Her mind was wandering during the rest of the show even though she tried to focus on the other dancers, and she eventually just resolved to watch everything on the DVR later. She usually did it anyway to take notes, but she would especially need that observational period today considering how distracted she was. It felt like much too long before she was saying goodbye to Katherine, who she shared her dressing room with, and falling into the familiar pattern of her post-show routine. She carefully stowed her costume for the night in the closet for one of the wardrobe assistants to pick up once she left, and pulled on a light cotton robe, settling herself on her vanity chair to remove her makeup. She looked up from her last lipstick-stained cotton swab when she heard movement behind her, and let a huge smile bloom on her face when she saw who it was in the mirror.
“Hey,” Caroline greeted, pulling out her earrings and setting them on her dressing room table. She made eye contact with Klaus in the mirror, her heart skipping in her chest when her memories of the night before came rushing back. Caroline had recruited him to run through a few ideas she had for her and Tyler's finale choreography, and that turned into Klaus talking her into doing some...other athletic activities. They’d nearly gotten caught tangled on the floor of the studio, having lingered too long for lazy kisses and whispered promises. It was only when a janitor unlocked the door to clean that she realized it might be best to get some sleep before the show the next day. 
All of the fantasies he'd planted in her head "for later" seemed to rush back to her at once when she saw his face.
“All right?” he asked, leaning against the doorway with his hands clasped behind his back. He'd ditched the suit jacket from earlier, and she could see the cords of his necklaces peek through from under the collar of his dress shirt, his sleeves rolled up to his elbows.
"Yeah. I think it went okay."
"Better than," Klaus complimented, entering the dressing room and closing the door gently behind him. "You made Lockwood look like he actually knew what he was doing."
"Thanks!" she said brightly, standing up to face him as he approached, letting him peck her lightly on the lips before continuing, turning back to finish up her makeup removal, though keeping eye contact with him in the mirror as much as she could. "We practiced a lot."
"I know. And once you get through tomorrow night, you'll only have another week."
"Don't jinx it. Weirder eliminations have happened," Caroline reminded him with a stern look that melted into a smile when he pressed his chest against her back, his arms wrapping around her waist. She tipped her head to the side so that he could press a light kiss to her neck. "Hey! I'm trying to take my makeup off and change."
"Apologies, love. Far be it from me to inhibit your goal of undressing."
"Careful or I might ask you to leave."
He chuckled, letting go of her and taking a few steps back, grabbing the chair Katherine used at her vanity and pulling it over to sit. "Do you have any plans for the rest of the week?"
"Other than rehearsals, you mean?" she asked, throwing the last makeup wipe in the trash and reaching to pull her hair into a high ponytail. "Not really."
"I want to take you out, then," he said, fiddling with his phone as he observed her for any hint of a reaction. "Dinner?"
"I'd love to." 
"Perhaps tomorrow?  To celebrate the only chance you have at getting the trophy since I was so unfairly eliminated?"
"Very funny," Caroline drawled, putting her toiletries in the cabinet by the mirror and turning around with her hands on her hips. "I don't understand how someone who lost can stay so arrogant."
He gave her a dimpled smile. "One of my many talents."
"Ego isn't a talent," she pointed out, reaching into her closet where she kept her tote that held her street clothes. "I am surprised that you haven't pulled out some supposed-to-be-charming line about how you almost hope I'll lose tomorrow so that you have an extra week with me. Kudos for that."
"I hardly think you'd find that charming, Caroline."
"Exactly. Hence 'supposed-to-be-charming'," she said. "And is that what you are? My boyfriend?"
She felt a little silly when she heard the obvious satisfaction in her own voice, but the giddiness of a crush being returned, of finally having Klaus after the agony of being in denial for so long, was an intense relief she hadn't known she needed.
"I should hope so," he said slowly, though his tone had grown guarded in a way she found she didn't like. "I'd take you any way I can, of course, but--"
"Yes. I want to date you," she interrupted quickly, regretting giving him any more reasons to doubt that she wanted him. "Sorry, I was just teasing."
"It's all right."
Her hands were shaking slightly and she stuck them in the pockets of her robe to mask it, though she doubted Klaus had missed the gesture from the dart of his eyes towards the movement. "No, it's not. I'm...I'm sorry. Like, obviously I didn't owe you anything, or anything, but I never exactly said I wasn't interested because I was. Interested, I mean. It wasn't fair to you. I was just like....scared, you know?"
"Of what?" he asked, looking more curious than annoyed. "You can't possibly think that I'd reject you?"
"No, but a little part of me thought you might like the challenge, or whatever. That I might just be a game to you. And then I'd have to see you all the time on the show and that would be awkward, and I love my job, and I didn't want..." she trailed off, realizing she'd been babbling slightly. "But I do like you, Klaus. A lot."
"Do you?" he asked, his trademark jerky dimpled smirk making an appearance.
"Yes. Even though you have an ego the size of a small country."
"And here I thought that was part of my charm," he teased, standing up and taking a few steps towards her, reaching to ease her hands out of her pockets and tangling their fingers together. "I've always fancied you, Caroline. I thought I'd made that clear, but I never want you to doubt that. I'll remind you as many times as you need me to."
"That makes me sound like an insecure crazy person," she said, wincing even as the words came out of her mouth. Saying it aloud only made it sound worse. "Like, I don't want to need you to...to reassure me or whatever."
"You're not a game to me, Caroline. I do not fault you for considering the possibility, but I intend to convince you to put your trust in me and to keep it."
"Good," she said, squeezing his hands. "And for the record, I've always fancied you, too."
