if you live in the US and are still buying books off of amazon i am judging you forever. amazon is hard to boycott but for books you have like 100 other options. most indie bookstores ship nationwide and you can just order from their website even if you don't live nearby. just go to indiebound, pick a store, and order directly from their website. if you're in the US using audible or fucking spotify for audiobooks you're a fucking weenie, too. you can get that shit for FREE from libby or hoopla with your library card (which if yours sucks or you can't get one you can often get out of state ones pretty easily), but if you want to own it you can just buy a la carte or get a subscription from libro fm and choose a local bookstore to support. i mean damn worst case scenario you can order a lot of used and new books from better world books with free fucking shipping (and this ships to almost ANY COUNTRY)

Yeah Viv is going to super hell lol
I want to be shocked so badly but to the point of having most of the angels being vague black women whereas velvette/alastor are loose caricatures of mishandled lost potential I don't know what to tell this fandom anymore.
It's ridiculous how much this fandom chooses to speak actively over black voices instead of lifting to encourage the fact that vivs writing is sooooo racist as HELL<3

if you want to watch hazbin hotel, I’d recommend you pirate it or watch it with a large group so that only one person will be giving viv and amazon money. The creator is a shitty person and amazon sucks.
(Still, you’re not a bad person for liking the show! Just remember to separate the art from the artist and don’t support viv. Love y’all!)

“But do not despise the lore that has come down from distant years; for oft it may chance that old wives keep in memory word of things that once were needful for the wise to know.” - Celeborn to Boromir, Farewell to Lorien, Fellowship of the Ring
Celeborn straight up told amazon to respect the original books and the people who love them so they ignored his existence

So some of my family members decided to watch rings of power and here is my review based on the snippets I saw:
first of all: the production quality is great, seeing as they poured millions of dollars into this
however they made some extremely questionable choices with a number of things that make it really hard to enjoy the show
(apart from the fact that amazon is massively benefiting from this already has my disdain)
NUMBER ONE: the character dynamics: galadriel, celebrimbor, gil galad and elrond treat each other as acquaintances at best. they’re literally cousins?? why are they described as nothing except friends???
NUMBER TWO: “elf lords only” wtf. elrond is literally heir to all three houses of finwe and all the great lines of men and he’s not important enough to be at a meeting for elf lords?? he’s literally the most qualified one there is.
NUMBER THREE: galadriel is treated as younger than everybody. gil-galad and elrond almost act like authority figures to her, and celebrimbor literally looks like he could be her father when in reality she probably has at least a century on him, and even more on elrond and gil galad.
NUMBER FOUR: aka issues surrounding galadriel. why did finrod call her galadriel in valinor. they don’t even speak sindarin in valinor yet. also, why is she sailing back to valinor in the middle of the second age. she’s literally exiled.
NUMBER FIVE: “there have only been two man/elf couples and they all ended in tragedy” sorry what?? beren and luthien: ended happily. idril and tuor: ended happily. aegnor and andreth and nimloth and dior ended sadly but that’s still 4 man/elf couples.
NUMBER SIX: celebrimbor in general. why does he look like a grandpa 😑
also, why do so many elves have short hair?? i get that that’s just a stylistic choice, so i’m not gonna add it to the list bc it’s just my opinion but really?
apart from those things, the show is…honestly just not that interesting to me. i love disa and nori, and the scenery is great, but honestly overall the show is pretty mid. i feel like it had a lot to live up to, and just didn’t really get there.
of course, i didn’t really have high expectations, and it’s amazon so i’m not really all that upset about it…

watch me age 10 years after reading the short interview with ROP’s script writers
Tumblr media Tumblr media
they are so lovingly applied, they aren’t even visible. Amazing.
Tumblr media
having to take the passive aggressiveness of a 40+ year old white man-child in a Tolkien adaptation is something I never thought I would experience, but here we are, Mister Payne.
also, can you maybe stop using the “Well Tolkien never mentioned x thing” argument? You can use this as a template excuse to justify basically anything. Which is probably why you’re overusing it in the first place.
Tumblr media
the hairstyles changing over time seem to apply solely to male elf characters, who now sport short, gelled up hair, mullets, fades and buzzcuts; and not the female elf characters, who still have long hair. How very gender normative of you! Truly, the public applauds you for your backwards views in this very contemporary adaptation.
Tumblr media
amazing Mister McKay. I’m left in awe at your lore knowledge, yet I cannot help but notice you didn’t gave Galadriel her iconic braided crown hairstyle; the hairstyle that TOLKIEN DESCRIBED HER WEARING during the first age. You show that you know the lore, yet you seem to have put little of your knowledge into the show itself. This is truly and quite an amazing feat. Bravo.
Tumblr media
i forgot who created this month old meme, to credit them, but it seems to be still valid to the discussion:
Tumblr media
firstly, the fault is not that Galadriel is portrayed as a warrior. The issue is how piss-poor you’ve written her as one ( among other things I won’t go into here). You’ve basically written her as the most generic and unlikable manchild-warrior-protag ™
secondly, Nerwen is not a “nickname”, it is the name given by her mother because Galadriel was the tallest female elf among her peers ( and in all ME history, if we’re going meta), and because she was athletic, and liked partaking in sparring with other elves. She wasn’t called Nerwen because she was manifesting the manchild-warrior-protag ™  vibes you cursed her with. Maybe Mister Payne is projecting his own inner man-child into the character he’s likely writing for the script.
thirdly, since we are playing ‘taking the names as literal as physically possible’ game, did you know that her birth name, Artanis, means “noble woman” in elvish? Funny how we don’t see any of the diplomacy of a noble person in her character during your show. Interesting how you wrote her character to be brash and muscle headed :) with the social skills of a petulant child.
Tumblr media
no. no, I don’t think I have anymore patience for this.

Change in Galadriels character is sexist
Yep. You read that right. Despite Galadriel being this great ninja badass whose most important possession is his dead brothers dagger the show (and the change in her character) is sexist. This is coming from a girl who loves female characters that take part in combat and are great warriors.
In cannon Galadriel is 6’4 woman with amazon disposition who is in par with all the loremasters and athletes of the eldar and along with her uncle Feanor considered the greatest of their people even though Galadriel is considered wiser of the two. She is proud, athletic, wise and ambitious. She didn’t leave Valinor in order to defeat Morgoth but because "she had dreams of far lands and dominions that might be her own to order as she would without tutelage". She wasn’t granted pardon from the valar at the end of the first age and was banned from returning to Valinor. Her response? She didn’t care. She didn’t want to return.(If I remember correctly, she basically said that she had done nothing wrong and therefore didn’t need forgiveness.) In the second age she got married to the love of her life and had a daughter, who would go on to marry Elrond. When Sauron began to stir in Middle-earth again he was noticed by Galadriel even though at the time she or no one else knew it was Sauron. She however noticed there was a controlling evil, and that it was spreading beyond the Misty mountains. She also thought this 'residue of evil' could only be fought with an alliance of all its enemies. As a result she and her husband moved east and established Eregion. When Sauron came to Eregion in disguise she didn’t trust him and he “perceived at once that Galadriel would be his chief adversary and obstacle, and he endeavoured therefore to placate her, bearing her scorn with outward patience and courtesy". She did lot of other stuff, but it would literally take me too long to list them all.
If this doesn’t scream a powerful, strong woman to you, I don’t know what does. Now when we look at Rop Galadriel she is weak in comparison. She is basically a subject to Gil-Galad, has established no realms, has no desire to rule, is reckless and impulsive and isn’t respected. She's a young, angry girl with a sword who single mindedly chases a goal set by her brother. While a strong warrior woman is a character I usually like and find inspirational, Rop Galadriel is not it. She is mean, stupid and has no depth. Sadly, this is the case with most of “strong female characters” in modern media especially if made by men. If you want an example of a female warrior archetype done well, look at Eowyn. She is young, angry, independent and a great fighter, but she is also desperate, lost, sad, ambitious and complex. She ends up choosing life over death in the end and finding her happiness.
Another problem with Rop Galadriel is rejecting her more feminine strength and changing it into more traditionally masculine one. It not only makes her weaker but also spreads the message that in order to be strong, you have to embody traditionally masculine traits: aggressiveness, toughness and being emotionally hardened. Ironically, in Tolkiens world characters who embrace their traditionally more feminine qualities, empathy, kindness and caring, along side their masculine qualities, are the ones that are the strongest.
As for appearance, Galadriel is extremely beautiful, but also tall and athletic in canon. However, in the show she is beautiful yes, but she is shorter than the male characters and slim, but not muscular. I don’t know about you, but I’d call that sexist. In the Lotr movies she is at least tall.
To summarize, Amazon took a powerful woman in her own right who represented more traditionally feminene and quiet form of strength, who was known to be extremely tall and athletic and as such most likely muscular, who was far sighted and established realms and started preparing the world to stand against Sauron in concrete ways, who people listened and loved and whom Sauron recognized at once as his greatest adversary and obstacle and turned her into small, toned at best, angry girl who thinks only of herself, is no ruler, has established no realms, is sidelined, makes stupid, spur of the moment decisions, whose only effort in fighting Sauron is trying to find him in order to defeat him with weapons and commands no respect. (And who might have a romance with halbarad, who might be Sauron or the witch king.) This change is sexist because it shows how amazon refuses to acknowledge her quiet, traditionally more feminene strength as good enough and gives her masculine traits and strength but make her look feminene and conveniently attractive and removing more masculine aspects of her appearance (height and muscle.)
P.s. I’m not trying to say “women have to be feminene and can’t be masculine, but rather use words masculine and feminene to describe qualities that traditionally are associated with men and women. Personally I believe anyone can be just as masculine or feminene as they want regardless of gender.

I just LOVE it how Amazon/rings of power fans say
"heeeey~ who cares this show has nothing to do with Tolkien's works or respect for the human race and cultural heritage? It has cool 😍effects😍 AND I can make cool gifsets and get lots of notes😱! And Tolkien...died...? I guess?🙄 So.... what's problem? New generation is bored of these old gOoD stories 😉"
Dear rings of power fans, if your damaged brain can still analyze human speech, I completely agree that every story is worth telling. And the new unique 2022 fantasy tv show has all the rights to exist. New writers should have a chance to share their ideas with this world!
The thing is: 1) if they don't like Tolkien's works (which is completely fine) 2) if they believe they can tell a better story (why not) 🙂WHY THE F*CK THEY KEEP CALLING IT "LORD OF THE RINGS"?!?! Why the f*ck they couldn't create a whole new show with a whole new idea?
I'll tell you why: cause no one would watch it.🙂 They'd probably have the audience of some Netflix original shows but they wouldn't have millions of people. That's what they do: they take the name of a dead man who obviously can't do anything about it, they take his life work's title and add it to some Netflix original show/cheap fanfic with high budget.
You can say: "yeah sure, go and create sth better". And I'll say: I DON'T MIND?! GIVE ME 1 BILLION DOLLARS AND I'LL MAKE A MUCH BETTER JOB😌✨
I'll always support new creators, new ideas and new stories! BUT I'LL NEVER SUPPORT talentless rich guys even breathing next to something made by someone really gifted.
Tumblr media
If you're really ready to admit out loud that all you care about is cgi and you don't mind paying for every poorly written script (ohhh I watched first 2 episodes and it hurt my soul) cause you're already used to eat shit....then....idk find some self respect?
It's not only about Amazon, good omens is a good show, rings of power is not

In these difficult times, I come to offer you a morsel of hope.
J. R. R. Tolkien’s the Lord of the Rings trilogy, the Hobbit, the Silmarillion, the Unfinished Tales, and all of his other works still exist, and no matter how hard the corporations try to remove the soul from his art, they will never pry these books from our hands.
And Peter Jackson’s trilogy, made with love and heart, and respect for the Professor’s art — and those of us who love Middle Earth, also still exist. We can watch them as many times as we want, they can’t make us stop.

I am convinced that this push for "more diversity" in tv shows and movies has nothing to do with Hollywood actually caring about these groups. It's because they no longer have to put in effort towards actually making a good product! They have a ready made excuse to trot out, if and when it flops, that puts all the blame on the viewer.
Oh, you don't like this complete and utter massacre of canon that takes everything you liked about the source material and flips it around? You just hate that it stars a strong female character! Deal with it you sexist trash!
What's that? You hate that this tv series lies about your history or blatantly appropriates your cultural background, while claiming to be real information? Or that this movie seems so flat, colorless, and unimpressive compared to the lively original? You just hate that the main character is black! Shut up you racist!
Huh? You think that the main character is poorly written, and that the plot is flat and uninteresting? You obviously have something against the LGBTQ character we included! Get lost you homophobe!
As long as they can point at some type of "bigotry" to explain any hate, the writers and producers of these tv shows and movies have no real reason to put any work into making them interesting! They're using this "diversity" as a shield against criticism for their low quality work. And I find that to be very disrespectful not only towards the fans, but towards the characters they write, the actors they hire, and the groups they supposedly represent!

i think all that needs to be said about jackson vs amazon's portrayal of (especially male) elves is that i, a lesbian, am attracted to all of the elves in lotr/the hobbit and none of the elves in trop.
