i am in love with your sollux i think
Tumblr media
sollux love party :]
if you’re interested heres some of my personal fondness thoughts on him.. big warning for the mega long read ahead aye
as we alr know sollux's rejection of participation somewhat mirrors dave's rejection of heroism, but even without getting cooked to completion i still find sollux's character v compelling beyond the fourth wall
as someone who doesnt get a pinch of that Protagonist Sparkle to begin with, he can openly say he wants to leave anytime…. and unlike dave, he actually Can leave the scene anytime. but he can never be truly Free from the story via permanent character death like the other trolls.
his irrelevancy is indeed relevant - he’s there so u can point him out.
while his image is intended to be a relic of past internet subculture, his role is not only about hehehaha being a Chad or a 2000s cyberforum 2²chan haxxor ragequit gamebro.
his continued existence also happens to add a Bit to the overarching themes of homestuck! a Bit that gives him longer-lasting thematic relevance compared to the trolls who could’ve had more character potential but didnt get to survive beyond the main story.
the Bit in question:
his defiance contributes to the illusion of agency (treating characters = people with autonomy). he’s “aware” of it, and that recognition is worth noting enough to forcibly keep him alive as both reward and punishment.
considering how his personality & classpect is designed its definitely a very haha thing for hussie to do LOL. he’s made to be op asf so he's resigned to doing dirty work, gradually deteriorating along the way but never truly dying. as fans have mentioned before, him openly rejecting involvement after a while of grim tolerance is like if the sim u were controlling suddenly stopped, looked up and gave u the finger while u were step six into the walkthrough for Every Possible Sim Death Animation.
but since he’s just a sim… the more he hates it, the more you keep him around. if ur sim started complaining abt your whimsical household storyline you’d definitely keep that little fuck.
but yeah i like that sollux is just idling. the significance of his presence being that one dude who's always reliably Somewhere, root core Unchanged, no individual ambitions (possibly due to fear of consequence?), and design-wise: a staple representative product of his time.
compared to dirk's character, who has aged phenomenally well into the present (themes of control + AR + artificial intelligence, clearer exploration around navigating relationships/sexuality, infinite possibilities of self-splinterhood and trait inheritance), sollux's potential is really... contained. bitter. defeatist. limiting and frustrating in the way old tech is.
Tumblr media
the world continues moving on to shinier, brighter, more advanced automated things - minimalist and metaverse or whatever but sollux is still here 🧍‍♂️ going woohoo redblue 3d. (tho personally i imagine his vibe similar to what the kids call cassette futurism on pinterest mixed w more grimy grunge insectoid influences eheh)
conceptually-speaking,
at the foundation of it all, the rapid pace of modern development was built off the understanding of ppl like sollux in the past, who were There actively at work while the dough was still beginning to rise
thats one of the cool things abt the idea of trolls preceding humans! the idea that trolls like sollux excelled back when lots of basic shit still needed to be discovered, building structures like networks and codes from scratch, and humans will eventually inherit and reinvent that knowledge in ways that become so optimized it makes the old manual effort seem archaic, slow, and labour-intensive.
but despite information/resources/shortcuts being more accessible now, much of the new highly-anticipated stuff released on trend still end up unfinished, inefficient, or expiring quickly due to cutting corners under severe capitalistic pressures
meanwhile, some of the old stuff frm past generations of thorough, exploratory and perfectionistic development still remains working, complete, and ever so sturdy.
those things continue to exist, just outside our periphery with either:
zero purpose left for modern needs (outdated/obsolete)
or
far too important to replace or destroy, bcs of its surprisingly essential and circumstantial usefulness in one niche specific area.
which are honestly? both points that sum up sollux pree well.
Tumblr media
dramatic ending sorry. anw are u still on the fence or are u Sick abt him like me </3

So I’ve been reading/watching a few different Helluva Boss theory posts/videos recently, and I really have to ask:
We all recognize that when it comes to serious theory-crafting on lore, character backgrounds and most other things, basically EVERYTHING from the pilot is firmly in ‘take with a grain of salt’ territory, right?
Like this is not some ‘true episode one’ or weird ‘episode zero’ thing. It’s a pilot, a proof-of-concept and basic introduction to the series premise and main characters. Now it is certainly a GREAT intro to that premise and those characters, but it’s also clear that at this point the writers were still ironing out the characters, lore and other elements. I mean just compare Stolas in the pilot to Stolas in just the first episode, or how Tilla went from being Blitzo’s older sister to being his mother.
And we can really see this dissonance all over the pilot, as well as possibly getting a sense of what earlier drafts of characters might have looked like.
Tumblr media
For example, Moxxie’s ‘dreaming my parents were getting murdered’ line in the pilot certainly feels like it may have at one point been foreshadowing, but it also just doesn’t fit very well with what we later got in the actual show. It seems like Moxxie would have nightmares about his mother being killed, but find dreams about Crimson being murdered to be quite appealing. Instead, I think we can guess that the plan at the time of the pilot was for Moxxie’s parents to have both been murdered by the mob/Crimson, possibly leading to Moxxie being adopted (perhaps by force) by Crimson. But between the pilot and the first episode, Vivzie and the team opted to streamline things by making Crimson be Moxxie’s father in the first place and him having murdered Moxxie’s mother. As evidenced by how Moxxie’s ‘maybe a shitty dad, or a mob family…’ line in Murder Family is MUCH more in line with what we end up seeing in Season 2.
Likewise, I imagine that Tilla originally being Blitzo’s sister likely had her in a nurturing, adoptive older sister role to Blitzo and Barbie, until the writers decided it simply made more sense for Tilla to just be the twins’ mother instead.
Tumblr media
So when I see people doing stuff like using Loona’s implication that she has syphilis as a major part of or even the whole basis for theories on her messed up background/childhood, I can’t help but feel like they’re unwittingly building up their theory on a pretty shaky foundation.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Like don’t get me wrong, I fully agree that Loona went through some major shit in her childhood. I even have a hunch/headcannon that her backstory is actually going to have Blitzo AND Moxxie beat in the fucked-up department. It’s just that I think a far more reliable source of foreshadowing on this is something like Loona’s whole ‘This kid probably sets dogs on fire’ spiel in Murder Family, rather than anything from the pilot. Particularly since we now how at least two other cases of seemingly offhand, inconsequential jokes from that episode actually being foreshadowing; again, Moxxie’s ‘maybe a shitty dad…’ line, as well as Blitzo’s ‘we’re just killing a mother…’ line.
Finally, everything I’ve said here goes double, triple and frankly QUADRUPLE for Hazbin Hotel. Whereas we only had a little more than a year between Helluva Boss’s pilot and first episode, we’ve had over FOUR years for Hazbin. And it’s clear already from the trailers and other promotional material that things have changed quite a bit since the pilot. Like I’m as hyped as anyone else to finally see this show get released, but when it comes to specific expectations, we REALLY need to take basically all but the most general, basic, broad-strokes story, character and lore details that were in the pilot with a MASSIVE grain of salt.
Things like the basic premise, general character personalities, Charlie and Vaggie being a couple, etc; those we know are still a thing. Everything else is WILDLY up in the air.

Wick, i wanna hear your thoughts on horror x cross..I’m desperate to hear someone talk about them. Idc how crazy or how ooc it is. trust that I will eat it up like it’s a million dollar steak
OH MY GOD THNAK YOU SO MUCH VIBINGTOPAZ IVE BEEN WAITING FOR SO LONG FOR SOMEONE TO ASK ME ABOUT THEM WORDS CANT EXPLAIN HOW HAPPY OKAY HERE YOU TO HERES A BIG FAT HEADCANON DUMP. i never see them outside of bsp and don’t get me wrong i love the bsp but sometimes i just want these two on their own yk? this is a bit more fanon than my normal stuff btw but i try my best ok
okok here:
when cross first joined nm and his group he was terrified of horror. he was intimidated by everyone, but horror was the most visibly scary. like there was just no ignoring the fact that this guy killed people before like he ignored it with everyone else. so for a good long while he kept his distance, and it was horror who tried to reach out first after months of never talking despite living in the same building, eating at the same table, and working under the same guy.
it was very clear that talking to cross just at all scared the shit out of him, and since horror is in charge of the cooking, he decided hey why not, and started making foods that appealed to cross as a sort of peace offering. after a while, cross realized what horror’s intent was, and slowly started to come around. he even attempted to give horror food in return (a few of the chocolate bars he had squirreled away) which solidified them as allies and set the foundation for them to develop a further friendship and relationship.
food is their initial and primary love language because it was a medium they could both work with when they first started becoming friends—horror enjoyed being given and giving food purely because he HAS it, and he’s able to make sure he and those he loves are fed, and cross had cooked with undyne alongside his brother and knows the basics of it and enjoys it. cross is literally the only one allowed in the kitchen outside of horror and nightmare, partially bc horror loooovesss him and partially because he’s actually responsible. horror makes him brownies sometimes just because he can btw. or like those chocolate taco desserts? cross loves those so horror makes them. all the time. cross does not mind he likes it a lot actually it’s very sweet
horror and cross are the epitome of i would kill for you (horror) x i would die for you (cross). they’re both very very intense but in different ways and i love that for them. cross takes blows on the battlefield meanwhile horror attacks those on behalf of cross when the other hesitates or refuses to kill (which is all the time cross at heart is a pacifist).
i also feel like they’d be big on physical touch but maybe i’m just super lonely. they’re devoted in different ways and i like that for them. they seem like big ‘kiss on the hand’ people yk what i’m talking about. like the back of your hand kiss. that. i also think they’re one of those cringe ass couples who like. do the waist grabby from behind when they’re cooking or generally working. ew cringe romance (i would die for them). neck kisses too. and biting but that tips into suggestive territory. they’d be big on that though
oh hey angst time. horror feels guilty and somewhat disturbed whenever cross mentions alphys, because of his au’s alphys incident, and it’s the same with undyne. cross was very close with both of them, more so than horror ever was despite having been alphys’ coworker at one point (after all, alphys was cross’ sister), and he feels bad because like. cross speaks so highly of alphys and undyne, but horror tore apart alphys’ mind and undyne is literally the cause of his most visible scar. he feels guilt for what he did, and refuses to elaborate on his au’s alphys and undyne for the most part because he doesn’t want to fuck cross up with the knowledge of the things horror did, the things alphys did, the things undyne did. thankfully after getting the hint that horror did not like mentions of undyne, cross stopped mentioning his undyne pretty much entirely and speaks of alphys a little bit less, and they never really elaborated on that fully outside of choppy confessions during panic attacks.
meanwhile, cross doesn’t understand why horror never visits his au, or at least his brother. because horror is ABLE to, he has his au right there, but he just… never visits? none of his family, his friends? cross would kill and die for the chance to get his au back, but horror doesn’t care for his? horror feeds them and that’s it, he doesn’t remember the last time horror just took a break to visit his family. cross would sacrifice his own life for even a sliver of a chance of getting his family back. it’s not until he fully understands how horrifying horror’s au is that he doesn’t resent him as much for it.
their clashing views and experience are hard to look past, but in the end they love each other enough to empathize with each other and the situations they’d come from. horror has issues with remembering and articulating things from time to time combined with severe migraines, so cross helps him with those. horror meanwhile gets cross to sit the fuck down and take care of himself jesus christ man because what do you mean this asshole is INTENTIONALLY starving himself. fym “i feel like i haven’t earned it lol” sit the fuck down and eat this food i LOVINGLY PREPARED. GOD. they help each other w their issues and bad habits. cross works himself to near death? okay shut up i’m going to forcibly lift you up and carry you to your room and lock you inside until you go to sleep. horror throws up after eating because he can’t handle that much food? cross is there to help him through it. i like them a lot. they r there for each other through their highs and lows.
since i hate xchara exclusion i think xchara like absolutely fucking despises horror. not because he’s evil and mean and grrr to cross, but he just genuinely does not trust horror and cannot believe that he has any sort of good intentions. xchara sort of fueled cross’ doubt about him for a while, though as time moved on and horror didn’t seem to have any harmful ulterior motives, xchara toned down on the whole ‘he is going to kill you don’t blink around him or you will die’ talk. not entirely but you know. he’s always got the ‘i’ve got my eye on you’ look whenever horror is anywhere near them but horror doesn’t know that unfortunately. he doesn’t get the pseudo brother stamp of approval. horror’s brother likes cross a lot though, especially because cross is literally the exact opposite of lazy and unhealthy and encourages self care of others (not himself, the absolute loser). like out of anyone he could’ve ended up with, horror’s brother (creeps? crooks? sugar??) likes cross the best i think.
ok speed round: cross is the type to not notice when anyone is interested in him, just at all. most frustrating months of horror’s life really. horror packs little trail mix baggies for cross when he goes out on missions or patrol. this is just cause i think it’s cute. purring skeletons, i like purring skeletons it’s my favorite thing ever and i think they should get to purr together and lay down in bed for hours on end half asleep half awake just existing together. when cross saw his very first colored sunset horror was there and that definitely furthered the at the time small spark of romance. cross, bc he’s a swap, is much more of a superhero nerd than a science nerd like horror, and they bicker over whether or not they watch a documentary or action movie. i think they don’t bicker like killer and dust do, they bicker in like. the very clearly lighthearted and cutesy way that doesn’t last long. it’s more like banter actually. gags
ok that’s it (for now…..) because i don’t want this to be too-too long. i love them and i was so so so so SO excited when you asked me this omg. i love asks like these i cannot stress this enough. ask me whatever you want whenever you want and i will answer. if it doesn’t seem like i have, that’s because it’s in my drafts and being worked on because sometimes i’m unsure or have half finished thoughts i want to put the effort in fleshing out later bc y’all deserve headcanons that aren’t half baked. anyway i will literally never get tired of this it’s so fun

Finished heaven official’s blessing and I really enjoyed writing an analysis on helluva boss I want to make this a regular thing because it’s fun so here’s my thoughts on
Heaven Official’s Blessing
Spoilers (duh)
I think it’s incredibly impressive when someone can make an overarching narrative in which different seemingly disjointed events are significant without A) putting a giant exclamation mark on top saying “REMEMBER THIS IT WILL BE IMPORTANT LATER” and B) Significantly over or under emphasizing the importance of the scene in the moment. Each event stood on its own and I liked that.
There were several janky sentences and word choices but that’s a translation issue, this writer clearly knows what she’s doing.
Characters were a lot of fun and distinct, my favorites were Feng Xin, Pei Ming, Qi Ying, and Ling Wen whenever they were on the page I was like Ah yes, these pages are gonna be enjoyable and I was right, they’re all delightful (cept the brocade immortal stuff, but like I don’t care, Google assistant is fun) Xie Lian and San Lang are delightful, love them, and San Lang is so effed in the head it’s enjoyable to try and imagine what unhinged thing he’ll do next
Tbh there isn’t much plot breakdown I want to do with this series because it knows what it is, it’s a fanfic ass book with good times, trauma, gay fluff, and fights. Need I say more? That’s not a detractor, it’s a strength. Be what you are and own it because a house with a house’s foundation is a great house but slap a building on that house’s foundation and it fails in both regards.
The only aspect I’m going to analyze is the narrative voice the books are written in because holy crap is it super impressive. Xie Lian is a super mature (or ditzy, depending on your point of view) character, he doesn’t dwell on things, doesn’t hold grudges, doesn’t really care that much about people’s histories or even their present, doesn’t focus much on externals and it comes through in the way the book is written. I noticed this when throughout the books San Lang would do fucked up stuff like make it rain blood and kill a pit’s worth of people and Xie Lian kinda didn’t really seem to care and at first it pissed me off, why isn’t the author letting consequences occur because of these peoples’ actions, but then as it held consistently throughout the book and other people kept being super concerned about stuff, like Pei Constantly asking after Shi Qingxuan (I don’t know how to spell their name, it’s so hard to keep track I’m so sorry) or people bringing up Banue, I realized this is just Xie Lian, other people in the book are regular people like me, this one guy is just experiencing things, going “Well, ain’t that something” and then just moving on. Honestly iconic, but also I was halfway through book six when I realized. Especially since whenever they do flashbacks Xie Lian does all normal stuff. He describes settings he’s in, he mentions events that happened a few pages ago, he tells the reader how he feels, it’s after he experiences all his shit he goes through that this all kinda slips away. In “present” scenes he’ll reference things as they come up but like in the flashback after Mu Qing leaves they talk about it a few times and I find that aspect of acknowledgment to be noticeably absent in the “present” scenes. After the black water arc there is a complete lack of discussion about the frankly trauma inducing event that just transpired but sure Cie Lian, you and San Lang have to not hold hands for the billionth time. At first I thought is this author high but then I realized what shes doing is characterizing through prose which is IMPRESSIVE AS HELL. This may be a point I noticed and am now misremembering the entire series just to bolster my take and if that’s the case then I shall sheepishly shrug and say I’m sorry. I’m not rereading 8 books to write a tumblr review. Maybe if I ever start a YouTube channel
I don’t know, I just find it to be an incredible feat of actually good writing when a story is being told through the lens of the main character and you can characterize that character by simply reading the story and seeing how it’s written, not even through dialogue and action. It’s kinda like the Great Gatsby or a Separate Peace, and it’s super cool that a book like this can accomplish the same thing that makes those classics great. There isn’t as much symbolism or analytical potential but those books wouldn’t be nearly as impactful as they were without great execution, which this book pulled off in spades.

yharnam archaeology??? 👀👀👀
hi I forgot that the blog I was rbing that from was a blog I followed for bloodborne stuff LMAO
okay so. this is heavily inspired by
Me being an anthropology student (who got into it because Cynthia pokemon is an archaeologist and I adore her, I took one (1) class and then got really invested, the important thing is. Archaeology go brr)
Me taking a very interesting class this semester that focuses on paleopathology, which is as my professor put it "the study of ancient suffering" but realistically is figuring out whatever you can from human remains. Whereas archaeology as a whole is about human culture from material remains, which can be actual bodies but can also be other things like pottery and building foundations.
Me teetering on the brink of being way too into Bloodborne for my own good despite not normally being much of a horror fan or a fan of particularly grimdark things. I Don't Know What's Different About Bloodborne. (it's probably that I'm a lesbian and I like lady maria, sue me)
Anyway. I got to thinking one time after class. That archaeologists would be SO FUCKING CONFUSED BY YHARNAM.
I'm tentatively placing Bloodborne as somewhere in the nineteenth century based on general vibes (according to my dad and his deep passion for weaponry of all kinds, a lot of the things in the game would have been derived later, but tbh if I lived in a place that constantly had to deal with people turning into horrifying beasts I think I'd innovate the hell out of things to get better weaponry so I didn't die too) and this theoretical au would be set in the modern day. so it's been a Hot Minute since the game ended and I think I was considering Yharnam Sunrise as the ending for. Reasons.
There's this group of researchers who end up heading to Yharnam, bankrolled by some rich heir or something who's got more money than sense (he dies or possibly turns into a beast from stupidity very early on) and possibly they're the last in a bunch of groups who went there and died because even hundreds of years after the horrors there are still So Many Ways For It To Go Badly? Undecided on that front, I'm still trying to figure out what (if anything) would actually be preserved.
Highlights of my vague plans:
The team finds Gilbert's journal. They all get really attached to Gilbert because that just kind of tends to happen. Which is unfortunate because they know damn well he probably didn't survive very long after the last page in his diary, but they didn't find a body, so...?
It takes a while for them to realize that the very canine skeletons have human DNA. At which point everyone is just. Very fucking confused. And also are realizing that maybe all those writings about the beast plague weren't actually about rabies (which does not leave a trace on the skeleton, fun fact! I wanted to do my project on rabies but I had to pick a pathology that had an effect on the skeleton. Alas)
There are so many arguments over who that grave behind the Hunter's Workshop belongs to. SO MANY. (I personally think it's very likely that is Maria's, but the team won't have any way of knowing that! If the headstone is unreadable by game times it's not gonna be any more readable centuries later!)
You determine whether something is bone by licking it. Someone finds an Amygdala skull and somehow, through the sort of stupidity that only happens in horror movies before people realize they're in horror movies, someone gets dared to lick it. This results in a very horrified Insight increase and the revelation that the weird fucking thing is made of bone. Also, that Amygdala's ghost is interested in the team now. Oops. This probably will go fine, right...?
What the FUCK are they going to think of all the statues of Great Ones. Probably (reasonably) that they are statues portraying something with great cultural significance to Yharnam, and possibly religious significance. Less reasonable is the fact that Great Ones... actually exist... and that SOMEONE is going to get enough Insight by the end to see those Amygdalas. Possibly the whole team tbh.
There is going to be so much arguing over how the fuck to cite shit. How do you cite some guy who supposedly disappeared centuries ago and is still hanging around in another dimension that you honestly aren't sure how to leave But You'll Worry About That Later, The First Hunter Is A Primary Source!!! How do you cite a ghost. How do you cite hallucinations and visions.
Possibly the Doll sneaks onto the team by pretending to be a survivor of a previous expedition, because tbh I think the Moon Presence can do what it wants and I think it would be VERY interested in these new bitches rocking up to Yharnam after a while. And, y'know, that goes fine until someone finds a picture of her. Or of Lady Maria. (Or until they reach the Abandoned Old Workshop, depending on the situation and if there's another version of said doll there to be found.)
Every. Single. Member. Of the team. Has some connection to Yharnam. Almost none of them know this originally. They will find out. Rip to Rom the Vacuous Spider's great-great-grandniece who discovers the hard way (finding Byrgenwerth's paperwork) why she was the first in her family to graduate uni, just not the first to attend it.
(Notable exception to this rule is the person who is convinced that his great-great-great-probably a few more in there-grandmother is Lady Maria. This gets very funny when the descendant of the player Hunter trips into the Hunter's Nightmare, which still exists due to said player Hunter poking their head in and wisely dipping immediately, and who manages to prevent a bossfight by blurting out "oh shit you're Jerry's great-grandma!")
(There may be lesbianisms involved. And some light necromancy. Idk I like Lady Maria a lot and I got enabled too damn much and I think it would be very funny for the group to return to civilization with an extra person. Or two.)
In summary, I have no plot (yet) apart from archaeology and being way too invested in the game, but I really want to write this someday once I actually finish said game. And also I'm having a grand old time coming up with characters to put through the Horrors. The archaeologist is named Cynthia Parker and. Well. If you remember the superhero identity of a certain character called Peter Parker, you might be able to figure out who she's distantly related to.
Other ideas include: player Hunter descendant, someone very distantly descended from a Cainhurst exile, and Jerry who is 100% certain his great-several-times-great-grandmother is Lady Maria of the Astral Clocktower and is 100% wrong about that. Jerry is the single party member with no actual connection to Yharnam and we love him for it.
Thanks for the ask I'm incredibly flattered that you were intrigued enough to ask about this from my tags given that I followed you for your BB fics :>

the SW dudebros are certainly eating up this episode. they're calling it "the greatest SW media since disney bought SW". something about the show being the only one that understood george lucas's idea on the Force (i'm a massive Lucas truther too but i heavily disagree on this lol). i guess that's a good indicator on how "good" the show actually is, eh?
I am terminally on twitter despite the rotten melonhead's best efforts and when I saw Lucas's name trending, I had to look... and yeah, a lot of tweets were crowing about Lucas's original idea for the Force and how Star Wars is finally going back to this original idea.... that had since been rewritten and transformed and become something else. Something else that now makes no sense to me because if all it took to become a Jedi was training and discipline and talent, why were there so few Jedi in the entire galaxy? What would've held back so many more people from becoming Jedi? And what does it say about people like Chirrut, who above all else had so much faith in the Force while not being a Known Force User?
"The Force is in all living things", so does that mean all living things can also use the Force? If so, why has this never been explicitly established before? The Disney Era has been canon for quite a few years now and I'm not aware of any precedent where someone who wasn't initially overtly Force-sensitive become one through training and discipline and talent.
The tricky thing about ideas that never make it to the big screen, the small screen, or the printed page is that they might be the original intent but sometimes they're left on the cutting room floor and a lot of times they transform into something else. And I don't mean the things that help an actor really get to know and understand their character. I mean the world-building stuff, the ideas that create the foundations and the rules and the internal logic of a story. If we've been going in one trajectory and then suddenly make a U-turn back to the origin point to go off in another direction, I would like some fucking warning.
But maybe it's just me. Maybe I'm just stubborn and bullish and have my blinkers on and refuse to consider the possibilities.
Or maybe the Felonious One really is breaking apart the universe he's in charge of for the sake of his Chosen One. The fuck do I know?

aw yeah lets do this
S-Tier, AKA the Legitimately Good Tier:
HAWKEYE: Maybe my favorite MCU thing I have ever watched.
+ If you let Jeremy Renner actually act and give him a script, he's fucking great. + Kate Bishop is a perfect mess and I love her, I love she's young and excitable but also takes things seriously, she feels like she's a work in progress, I love her. + MAYA. Holy shit the gravity well of this character, how her presence dictates any scene she is in. Truly stellar. + This entire miniseries is like an extended apology for Hawkeye in every other appearance. "Sorry we dropped the ball with this character so consistently, we will bring the A game here." + The importance of disability. I'm among the ppl who was upset that Hawkeye's disability was dropped, so the way it is centered over and over and over in this, how its practical, how it's funny, how it's sad, how it gives us the most devastatingly emotional scene in all of the MCU yes I am talking about the phone call scene, finally. Fucking finally. + Florence fucking Pugh and her entire charm offensive. + The car chase scene.
- The first episode is unfortunately REALLY slow. - Nah that's all I got. I love this one.
THOR: RAGNAROK
+ "Asgard isn't a place, it's a people" is maybe the most poignant message any MCU film has ever managed. + Literally the funniest movie, but also basically a repair job of character building for everyone in it. + The camerawork in this one makes me so happy. + Tom Hiddleston is given so much to do and he's there with heels on, spectacular. + The giant turret/pegging visual pun, god bless. + Cate Blanchett can kill me.
- uuuuuuuuh. It's not as good as Hawkeye. Yeah.
GOTG Vol 2
+ Sorry but I am a GOTG Truther, I really do think its the one storyline in the MCU that is allowed to get away with really fucking intense character drama because it's not considered "main line." There is a reason ppl rioted when they tried to remove Gunn, and I'm with them. + The only good thing Chris Pratt has done since Parks and Rec. + The way this storyline centers on death and grief is devastating. + Rocket Racoon is the best character in the MCU and we all know it.
- I think the initial treatment of Mantis is REALLY rough even though in the end I think it works, but that's a hell of a hump to get over.
A-TIER, AKA the Great for a MCU Flick Tier:
BLACK PANTHER
+ My biggest problem with the MCU is the creative desert of its set and costume design, the way it feels like nothing is given time to breathe in the creative process. BP is the antithesis of that. I would watch a four hour documentary just on the visual design of this movie, from the architecture to the costumes to the make-up, everything. I don't want to hear from the director or writers, I want to hear four hours of just the craftspeople talking about their work. It's monumental. + Best Villain in the MCU, bar none. + Only MCU film to move me to actual tears in the movie theatre.
- I loved this movie! For the life of me I could not tell you the plot. I understand the plot of every Mission Impossible film but I don't know the plot of this movie. - If this movie was allowed to cut, like, 20 minutes of action and replace it with more character drama, it'd be the best MCU film.
IRON MAN 3
+ The MCU Movie That Pulls Exactly Zero Punches About Being About Mental Health And PTSD Holy Shit + Rhodey and Pepper get so much to do and I like an ensemble piece so much + Shane Black is in love with RDJ and I'm so happy for him + Pepper gets to be a lil monsterfied and that's hot
- Doesn't have Sam Rockwell. - The plot is kinda fully secondary to the character work, which imo is fine, but yanno.
GOTG Vol 1
+ All the stuff I said about GOTG Vol 1
- It's not Vol 2, which benefits from having all the bedrock foundation built by this movie to spring from.
B-TIER, AKA It's Fine I Guess:
IRON MAN 1
It's good! It invented the wheel! Part of it are fucking agonizingly painful to watch in 2023 but it also has more heart than 80% of the franchise so.
IN A CAVE. WITH A BOX OF SCRAPS.
LOKI
Okay it feels shitty of me to judge this one on its technical faults bc apparently it was shot during the pandemic and that causes a lot of the issues with the camerawork, the awkward editing, and just how Weird everything was put together. But also it's REALLY stilted and awkward, which butts up against the good script and the better acting, so IDK man.
Owen Wilson is amazing. Even my mother thought the way they canonized Loki being bi was a cop-out. And the final twist pissed me off. I hope Season 2 is better.
THOR 1
I DUNNO WHAT TO TELL YOU, BUT KENNETH BRANAGH UNDERSTOOD THE ASSIGNMENT.
DR STRANGE AND THE MULTIVERSE OF MADNESS
This movie is a mess but once i figured out it was trying to be The MCU Does Gothic Horror, I was a lot more on board. It has all the flaws of the original Dr Strange and is hard to visually follow like most MCU films, but also has America Chavez, who I adore.
IRON MAN 2
It has Sam Rockwell, I don't give a fuck.
C-TIER, AKA I wish I cared but I do not 8C
DR STRANGE
I dunno I like the actual character of Strange weirdly, I like what a complete fucking asshole he is, I like his god complex and how he reacts to his disability as a surgeon. On the other hand what the fuck is Tilda Swinton doing here, this is just awful. My biggest issue with this film is that it didn't have to be this terrible but every decision made about it feels so fucking thoughtless and myopic.
WANDAVISION
yanno. i cannot even explain why i fell off this so hard. Like, this one Had Me all the way up to and including the Agatha reveal, but like the final episodes after that reveal somehow left me completely cold and uncaring. it's genuinely weird.
D-TIER, AKA Oh my god no thank you
AVENGERS
I hate the writing. Like, I haaaaate the writing. I feel like the only likeable relationship in this is Tony and Bruce, and that does not carry this movie. The quip-driven writing, the way the need for a joke supercedes naturalistic voices and dialogue making sense, it pisses me off. I hate the writing. Heartless movie.
BLACK WIDOW
oh my god i'm actively angry at this movie okay because for the first 20 minutes, I was like "wait, is this going to be a real movie," because it felt smaller, the action felt more realistic, that fight between the Widow and Yelena in the beginning felt like it could have been out of MI: Fallout, and the other fight between Natasha and Yelena in the safehouse was also good, I really thought for a few moments that this could be Good
and then it just took a hard right into The MCU Tries And Fails To Make MI: Fallout (They Even Stole The Mask Gag, What The Fuck Was That) and not only was I disappointed, I was like retroactively pissed for the 20 minutes when I had hope in my heart. If not for David Harbour's character, I would have just left in the middle of this movie.
AVENGERS: ENDGAME
Its not at bad as Infinity War! Nebula and Rocket carried this movie on their fucking backs. But what do I know, I liked Renner's mohawk of sadness.
F-Tier, AKA Fuck This Movie
INFINITY WAR
Fuck this movie with a rusted steel dildo, fuck this entire fucking movie, I despise it. The writing is so actively fucking terrible I want to fistfight whoever is responsible. I fucking hate the attempts to humanize Thanos over how sad he is about the daughter he abused and then murdered, boo fucking hoo, I hate the joylessness of the superhero combinations, I hate the quip-driven writing, I hate this movie with a burning passion. This might be one of the worst movies I have ever seen. Soulless and destitute.

i think a lot of current discussion and enjoyment of the fandom is s2 centered? so more s1 stuff is slightly less usual in the show now (despite still having a lot of references lol)
Nothing hurts more than the fact I spent like literally half an hour on a reply and the power went out as I went to post it- but fuck it! We try again. I’ll try to make it shorter this time. (I failed sorry.)
I totally understand that the current fandom is more s2 focused and want different things. But I don’t think that means it shouldn’t be viewed from a s1 lense. The first season set the foundation and appeal of the show as a comedy. Though I do think the fandom is genuinely a lot younger rn and focuses more on ships, character moments, story beats, etc- which is totally fine! I’m not trying to dismiss critiques or say these wants are stupid because of the younger fanbase- I was in this fandom since I was 15. I do think it plays into the wants and appeals of the show though.
And here’s really the thing. S1 is the basis of the show- it should’ve set the expectations for how the podcast goes. Where I think the divide comes from, is that the younger audience usually means people binged s1- rather than listen episodically. Binging it, you don’t have to wait between the stupid five footers and nonsense to get to character beats and emotions because you can just go and go and go to the next episode.
This is why I think people are so impatient in s2. I see people writing their own fanfiction ideas about how the next episode is going to go, spending 2 weeks building up an expectation that is never actually going to meet the show. If they were binging through this, I don’t think anyone would have this strong of a reaction to this episode because they’d just go to the next one to try and get what they want. People love the characters and plot so much they tend to forget the podcast has always been a rowdy comedy podcast at its core.
I actually think one of the reasons s2 struggles so much is because of the huge expectation to live up to the emotional beats of s1 without realizing the stupid moments are the reasons they WORK. You need Henry’s hippie jokes to make Oakvale hit. You need Glenn’s weed joke to Erin so it can come back at the trial. We make jokes about how ‘I’m crying over Glenn Close in Meth Bay lol!’ But that’s why the emotions hit so heavy. They are not SUPPOSED to be every episode.
The podcast is founded on the jokes and the stupid shit- if you want cool dnd shit.. like, this isn’t your podcast. That isn’t me gatekeeping or saying people can’t enjoy it if they come for those moments- but genuinely telling you to remember what you’re coming to. If you love the characters and the story, that’s great- but the comedy and bullshit episodes are always the core of the show for the story to build around. If you’re not gonna like them, that’s okay- but you will only disappoint yourself if you keep coming expecting something else.
You can watch it and hate these episodes. You can feel disappointed or upset something didn’t happen. That’s totally fine. But I really draw an issue with people viewing it as an error on the show’s end. Your personal preference not aligning with the show all the time is cool! But the show doesn’t pretend to be anything but stupid. It’s not bad storytelling to make the comedy show funny. The episode after the Grant Yeet scene, a huge part of it is them looking at Darryl’s shit in the toilet and getting eldritch trauma. You can’t really pick and choose Imo. But hey, do what you want, I’m just some guy! And ultimately if complaining is how you have fun (I get it, I love talking shit) then enjoy fandom however you like.

NOW ITS UR TURN WHO ARE YOUR MGS FAVS AND WHY!1!1?1!1?1!1?11!1! ٩( 'ω' )و
EHEHEEEE OK SO I'll say my fav from each game
Mgs1 is def Liquid he. He's so overdramatic it's really funny. He did so many backflips while explaining his tragic backstory 🥰 and then he just fucking died and turned into an arm which is the real tragedy (I have so many random HCs for him it's insane... I also rewrote his backstory a little...the recessive thing is so dumb)
Mgs2 I think it's a split between Raiden and Fortune. Raiden I really enjoyed playing as a character who is just... idk how to put it I just like that he's flawed and not some morally perfect charismatic guy. It feels like he's set up to be that way and then he whines about everything and is very dismissive at some points. It feels like he's a real person and not perfectly crafted to be the ultimate stereotypical good guy protagonist who can stay cool and collected in every situation. He has his moments where he lets emotion get the better of him and I like it a lot.
Fortune I have less to say about her but it doesn't mean I like her less. I think she's a really tragic character backstory wise but I also like how she sort of "plays into it" I guess? Ocelot points it out himself near the end of the game ("you couldn't get enough of the drama"). I thought the ending where she found out she could've died any time and she didn't have some magic ability was sad too and I lowkey wish she didn't die and was like redeemed somehow (imagine she comes back in mgs4 and has to go against Vamp or something that would've been so cool)..anyway I guess I didn't actually have less to say I like Fortune a lot blehhh😋
mgs3 AGH.. EVA ILY she is such a well written character and I love her so much I could write an essay on her if I wanted but I'll keep it more brief here. She's like a perfect subversion of the typical sexualized woman in video game thing...it's what she's doing as a spy for the mission and the best part is it doesn't even really work lol nice job snake. The game itself even adheres to whether Eva is in her Eva persona or her Tatyana one. It's....aghhhhghhh so great. (I have so many thoughts about her and Liquid btw)
Mgs4...difficult but probably Screaming Mantis. For real this time not a lot to say about her but I do like her a lot more since playing the game she went from my least fav B&B unit member to my fav one. She was really fun to watch in all her cutscenes and her boss fight was one of the best MGS boss fights I've ever done tbh. The callbacks and references to the first game were so good I won't lie I was giggling kicking my feet a lil bit. Screaming Mantis ily I have so many thoughts <333
Peace Walker ermmm Kaz and Paz equal I can't decide..also maybe Amanda. Yeah I like everyone a lot 😭 and Cécile....not Snake tho sorry lol. I haven't finished the game so I haven't gotten the full character arcs of everyone so it's hard to pinpoint exact explanations but you know I love Kaz forever and ever mwah mwah (I'm also a transfem Kaz truther and I'm RIGHT!!!). Amanda has a lot of really cool tapes explaining a lot of...not really exposition but it gives a lot of great context to her character. And her voice acting especially in cutscenes is some of the best voice acting I've seen in an mgs game so it adds a lot. Paz I need to learn more about her. I know basic plot points but not the inbetween stuff that really lets you get to know her. I do feel really sad for her though, Kojima decided he wanted shock value instead of a female character having a nice ending 🤷‍♀️ Sucks.
Mgsv QUIET!!!! QUIET ILY!!! she's soooooo OUGH. I'm glad a lot of the fandom has fixed her from her extremely flawed portrayal in the game because it shows what really could've been and I think I latch more onto that than the version of her in the game just a little. The foundation they were working with was still really good. The way they show her and venom building such a strong bond despite never having a single conversation is really well done and I like it a lot. Quiet ily my favourite creaturething killgirl my favourite ear biter offer...

Sorry matt maybe im just cruel but my fav vversion of romantic gustholomule is when matt catches feelings first but cannot express them and doesn t want to but gus is very friendly and already claimed matt as his friend so they hang out a lot (in the same classes sińce matt joined illusion track for no other reason than his sudden interest in illusion magic obviously!! The same club + gus is one of his few in not the only friend). Matt is too pround and awkward to communicate his feeling (platonic ones too) but constantly expresses them thru actions (can also be takes as platonic gus&matt)=> going out to find more human junk to talk with gus about/figure out what was it used for.
He d definetly visit the Owl lady for the human stuff/stories (and his and edas dynamics would be soo fun)
He d observe and study gus illusion techniques and once gus catches on he d offer to tutor matt/get curious about the construction magic as well.
The potential of gus creating illusion of statues/etc and matt actually being able to recreate them with his magic.
Maybe they d create human exhibition but in order to make it more interesting for other students they d make together replicas which students could touch while having the actual "artefact" disolayed
And gus meeting steve! And they d vibe so much, teaming up and teasing matt while he gets jealous of how quickly they became friends(? lack of a better word)
They d pull pranks together tho not that many since gus doesn t like "that mean" pranks and matt finds some of gus s elaborate plans ridiculous
This was supposed to be more about their romantic side of relationship but i got lost and them being besties is also soo good</3
I LOVE them being besties cuz they're just so funny. They have this vibe about them that makes them seem so different at first glance but if you sit down and listen to them have a conversation, you realize they're both scheming little gremlins who love chaos and it makes perfect sense why they're friends.
If Matt with the feelings first is what we're calling cruel than I hate him and want him to never have a good day for as long as he lives. But mostly I just think the idea is funny because the Holy Trifecta of spiteful assholes who keep falling for the original trio of "losers" needs to be completed. It feels unfinished.
Although I'm very much in the opinion that it's not for a long while. So anywhere from a year from now to three. So Gus and Matt have this perfect platonic foundation with no feelings attached whatsoever and it's GREAT. And then feelings hit Matt out of fucking NOWHERE, completely unprovoked like an eternity later and he's like "are you fucking SERIOUS?? This is bullshit!! It's bullshit!!" Because in his own opinion, its gonna ruin everything.
Because YEAH. Long before the feelings started, Matt wasn't even able to articulate to Gus that he cared about him as a friend. I like to believe it stems from his former "friendship" with the glandus kids, where Matt fell into the habit of grovelling and asskissing because he was desperate for any scrap of approval. He was pathetic and he knows he was pathetic and now he tries really hard to never repeat that kind of behavior with anyone else. As such, he's adopted a level of emotional detachment so he's never taken advantage of again. He doesn't want Gus knowing he's dependent on him in the way that was made obvious to the glandus kids as he doesn’t want Gus seeing him as pathetic. So he keeps him at arm's length.
So how the FUCK is he supposed to navigate anything resembling romance with him? He doesnt know and he doesnt want to know. He fucking won't do shit about it I guess.
But yeah he DID join the Illusion classes partly because he was inspired by Gus, most specifically the awesome horrifying shit Gus did to Bria. But also Mattholomule spent a lot of time in the Looking Glass Ruins with Gus and that ghost guy, building defenses and repairing the damage as best he could and he really did learn a lot. Not only is Gus a powerful witch but he's also a prodigy who skipped a few grades so of course he's gonna know a ton about illusionist history and the like.
So Gus and ghost guy are there in rapt discussion about Django the Mirror King and whatnot while Matt builds walls and pretends to be uninterested. Eventually he caves and asks to be told more. Because not only is Gus a brilliant illusionist himself but he's the kind of bright passionate person that could probably pitch anything to anyone and make it sound awesome. Huge reason why Matt got sucked into multitrack in the end. Gus's enthusiasm is contagious.
Also yeah. Matt DOES stuff. Can't tell Gus he's cool or his magic is really powerful or anything all that nice but he'll do things that will make Gus's day brighter, which holds this friendship afloat. Attends all of Gus's flyer derby games, eventually resigns as H.A.S president so Gus can have his title back because "It's waaaaay too much work and I'm sick of it. But I bet a nerd like you will get a kick out of it." And yeah, finding little human knicknacks for Gus too geek out over, like a cat dropping dead mice on a doorstep.
He's just constantly showing his appreciation for Gus in little gestures and Gus IS aware of it. He doesn't mock him for it much but he often smirks and says "thank you Matty <3" a little too obnoxiously. Matt responds by shooting an earth mound out of the ground beneath Gus's feet and making him eat the pavement. <3
I've always been on the fence over whether Matt was actually into human stuff or if this was just an interest he faked to get into the H.A.S because he noticed the president's widdle baby face and figured he'd be an easy target to usurp. But if its the latter, I like to believe he at least got somewhat invested after he became friends with Gus. Again, Gus's contagious enthusiasm. I kinda like the idea that Matt isn't huge into human stuff himself but he now knows just about everything Gus knows because he lets Gus ramble at him. He claims to be annoyed by it, which only encourages Gus to run his mouth more. They have a neat system going here.
Tutoring hell ya!!! Gus teaching Matt like one illusion spell "for fun" while they're dicking around and Matt does a surprisingly good job. Gus is astonished.
"Wow. You nailed that one. You sure you've never studied illusions?"
"It's kinda hard not to pick up on it while I constantly gotta look at you flaunting your little smoke and mirror shows all the time."
"So what you're saying is....you've been observing my spells and copying me? :)"
"Don't get a big head, Augustus. You're so little, it'll knock you off balance."
"I'm bigger than you!"
I think the idea of Gus being so enthusiastic about construction spells and wanting Matt to teach him some is so cute. But also it'd be so funny if Gus was like. Completely fucking garbage at it. He tries and he tries, but instead of feeling shitty about it (his whole conflict from TTLGR) he feels comfortable enough to laugh about it. He's just having fun. Matt laughs too and teases him over it but doesn't mock him with anything close to the nastiness he had before, which is when Gus realizes that the two of them might very well be friends now.
Could definitely see Gus branching out more and trying to get more people aboard the human appreciation wagon. Like at this point he's actually been in the Human Realm and learned a ton so he's now more than an expert than he's ever been. So he's out here giving full out TED talks to the students, writing papers, building exhibits. Matt complains to anyone who will listen "He's gone crazy over this stuff. He's always been crazy about it but now its next level. Completely obsessed. I can't stand it."
"He says you have been helping him every step of the way."
"Sure I have. What's your point?"
Gus would LOVE Steve. Matt hates it. Steve embarrasses him in front of Gus. Gus embarrasses him in front of Steve. They're both bustards!!
I feel like they're destined to be pranking little delinquents together. But yeah they probably bicker and disagree too much that not many plans are executed. Matt gets way too carried away that before he realizes it he's suggesting absolutely evil shit and Gus has to be like "Think about that for more than two seconds."
".......Oh right. Amoral."
"Right."
Meanwhile Gus had busted out corkboards full of elaborate plans for pranks and a thirty minute powerpoint presentation. (Yes he owns a human projector.) Matt is just like "This sounds like way too much work to be fun. Can't we just shoot spitballs or something?"
"Once again, you stifle my creativity as an artist."
In conclusion I like them very much.

Rough draft ref for Cloudy & Orange, my two dumb TFA OCs who still need actual names
Cloudy is actually the transformer in my icon, making the ridiculous facial expression!
There IS a story to go with these guys, though idk if I will ever write it or anything. Said story mostly explores a pre-war spot on the timeline, actually, so there isn't much interaction with cannon characters.
It goes about like this:
Cybertron has a semi-functionist caste system, and Cloudy is a 'war-frame' transformer literally manufactured BY the military, like a soldier ant. Cloudy is an experimental model from a line of attempts at biomimicry, to make soldiers that were even more effective, ferocious, and resourceful than normal
Cloudy is kind of like if the MILITARY commissioned a much more real, much more genetically engineered (which, I would like to note, I headcannon that basically all TFA transformers are genetically engineered; they come in different 'models' and 'upgrades'; and that just sounds a lot like 'we are genetically engineering ourselves and are at the brink of outright cladization' to me) 'cat' 'catboy' than one normally thinks of. Less 'cute NYAH!', more 'scary TIGERboy who could bite your arm off'
also, uh WARNING! (robot) cannibalism is touched on below a bit
Cloudy serves in the Cybertronian military (he was BORN there,,,), during which he is stranded on a ship after a battle goes pretty Bad. Cloudy is the sole survivor of this, and pulled through by drinking fuel from the corpses of enemies (MAYBE fallen allies too, dunno how dark I wanna go). I DO know that even just doing that to DEAD non-transformer enemies would be a big deal, since transformers normally live entirely on inanimate fuels like energon, oil, ect- so I imagine even drinking BLOOD would be indistinguishable from cannibalism to them. Cloudy is literally intentionally programmed to like the taste of blood and this stuff distresses even him (arguably even more so BECAUSE of that)
Eventually the war Cloudy was forged for (most likely conflict with the Quintessons) is won, and he gets to go planet-side while on stand-by. Cloudy tries to do that Civilan Life, but its kind of tough when everybody is smaller than AND and kinda scared of you. He makes friends with this more open-minded motorbike (Orange) while he's there.
(they meet when a disaster of some kind causes a building to collapse, and Cloudy lunges at the nearest way-too-tiny-to-survive-this bot (Orange) to shield them. They get split up after that since Cloudy gets knocked unconscious, and first responders drag everyone off the scene for medical attention. But when Orange next bumps into Cloudy, he's determined to actually talk to him and find out what this 'scary war-frame's' deal is. Which is good, because Cloudy is way too shy to initiate conversation like that, haha)
Cloudy's secret eventually gets out when investigations of the stranding reveal that all corpses had been exsanguinated and gnawed on, all rations exhausted, and Cloudy came back weirdly healthy for a guy who should have starved to death. He's then sentenced to 'you die fighting in the gladiator pits, OR you die right now!' Cloudy gets immediately shipped out to the pits on the spot, and then Orange follows him there because he is a stubborn, loyal little mother fucker.
From there the story is less defined, BUT I know both of them become Decepticons when THAT war breaks out, seeing as both have become quite sympathetic to 'yo the current situation on Cybertron is FUCKED!'
I would also like to note, by 'reptile handler trust-bond', I mean some kind of wacky queer platonic(?) relationship defined primarily by it's foundation of carefully earned trust. I'm not very good in the social department, gonna be honest, but I like animals a lot, so that was the best analogy I had. Cloudy and Orange's relationship isn't romantic, I wouldn't say? It's based primarily in how Orange is one of the very few people Cloudy, who is very distrustful, is willing to trust closely.

PLEASE talk about your Alison Chao if you haven't already I would love to hear more about her
*rubs hands together excited*
I’m so glad you asked! First off, I’m everhue on the Wanderer’s Library site, and a lot of my thoughts here come from/are expressed in short stories I wrote there. Some of which got deleted because of the voting system, which is a large part of why I don’t post there anymore. Seemed like a waste. But I think are a few there.
To explain my Allison Chao(s)— I have three— I need to explain my interpretation of SCP Foundation lore, or at least the magic, Library, and multiverse lore.
In my interpretation of the world, there’s three ways to affect reality. There’s the normal, boring ways — with your hands, by talking to people, etc. Non anomalous. Follows predictable and literal rules. Then there’s magic, which follows more esoteric and metaphorical rules but is still relatively consistent. Anyone can do magic if they learn how, through performing rituals, chanting spells, using enchanted objects, etc. It’s more flexible than physics, but in order to do anything new, you need to build on what’s been done before. Basically sufficiently advanced and weird science. Your traditional dnd wizardry falls into this.
The third way is reality warping, which is entirely narrative based. You can’t trust anything to work twice, unless you can. Everything about reality warping is contextual. It’s chaotic and impossible to predict, unless it isn’t. If you’ve listened to Mabelpod, then that’s the vibe of reality warping to me. Some people are really good at convincing reality to do what they want, while other people make it harder to change the world around them thanks to their realness. I personally like the interpretation of Dr Clef where he’s a reality anchor and also separately likes to fuck with people.
These are less solid distinctions and more points on a spectrum. All magic actually originally comes from reality warping that’s been repeated enough— the narrative has solidified to the point where it’s just part of reality. All the science stuff and containment procedures are as much a way to tame the anomalous and then it into magic. So long as you follow the containment procedures— the rituals — then it won’t get out. This is also how the anomalous world manages to stay hidden despite the impossibility of keeping a secret that big — it’s a spell that everyone who stays up late at night paranoid is casting again and again.
So, coming to the Library. The Library isn’t a real place. It’s an idea. The platonic idea of a library, of home. The Serpent, which is also the Library, is simultaneously the most powerful reality warper and reality that’s been warped. I came up with this stuff before I read the Scholomance books by Naomi Novak, but there’s a lot of parallels there. Except there’s no dark secret with the Library— she’s basically the result of human yearning for knowledge and safety. She’s massive and infinite, but she also takes up no space at all. All that space is folded in on itself. The people that live in her are the realest part of her. The Ways are part of her, but also their own thing. They’re manifestations of the experience of travel, reality warped by the collective desire to just be there already. They can hypothetical take you to any universe within the infinite multiverse, but in practice, they don’t.
The multiverse is actually infinite, since enough people believe in that, but people’s conception of what infinity looks like is actually quite limited. For example, you might be able to conceive of a universe where humanity’s made it to space or where the South won the American Civil War or where you’re on Reddit instead of tumblr, but what about what you can’t concieve of? If the rules of physics weren’t what they are, what would reality look like? Every alien in fiction is in some way based on what life looks like on Earth, even if that’s through trying to be the opposite. If the multiverse is infinite, surely there must be universes we can’t understand. But how would you travel to somewhere that operates by different rules, narratively? You don’t usually. So universes tend to end up in constellations. Very very big constellations, don’t get me wrong, but everything that’s been written on the SCP foundation— save the stuff that so deeply contradicts the rest of this that it’s not worth trying to reconcile— is part of one constellation of universes.
Finally, we get to the idea of being multiversally common. I promise, we’re almost to Allison Chao. This is important, or at the very least, I enjoyed writing it out. Multiversally common is nearly synonymous with “narratively relevant,” but not always. If you’re familiar with the phenomenon of kinning, then the most multiversally common character in a work would be one that shows up on the most kin lists. You could make a religion out of this, probably, but I wouldn’t recommend it because it’d be a hassle. They’re also the characters that are most likely to be included in alternate universes or have fic about them. Obviously protagonists are going to be common, but there’s also other types. For example, if you’re going to write a DC comics Elseworlds miniseries about the end of the world to zombies or vampires, then you wouldn’t necessarily follow a character like John Constantine or Zatanna but they’d probably show up to say, “yeah, there’s some weird magic here.”
A lot of my thoughts on this, the ones that aren’t based in broader observations about the nature of narratives, come from the Black Queen hub. Namely, where it says “there is always.” That seemed unlikely to me, because surely if there’s an infinite multiverse, then there’s got to be worlds where there isn’t. So, multiversally common— there is always an Allison Chao in narratively relevant universes. She isn’t necessarily a reality warper as much as she is a manifestation of warped reality. Any individual Allison Chao might be real, but they’re also part of a broader story. Even their refusal to engage with the narrative is part of the narrative.
So finally, we get to mine. All three of them, actually. Allison Chao (Sparrow), Allison Chao (Checkers), and Allison Chao (the Reaper). Sparrow is the most similar to most people’s interpretations, I think. She has the forgetability hat, she’s known by LS and Black Queen to different people, she leads a splinter group of the serpent’s hand. She’s also a trans lesbian and kind of a tankie. She’s well read on Marxist theory and magic alike, although she prefers to use already enchanted objects, amulets, and charms rather than mess around and try to make things herself. She’s very focused on her own reality and Earth and has done a good job of adding to the collective Black Queen notes, even if visitors sometimes accuse her of bias. Her cell is also on the more aggressive side as far as Serpent’s Hand goes. She self identifies as a freedom fighter, others would label her a terrorist.
That’s true for almost all Serpent’s Hand groups, but in her case, it’s not entirely unfounded. She’s focused on the Foundation to the point of exclusion and is willing to negotiate with groups like MC&D, which her much less narratively important ex-girlfriend (and my oc) Quetzal, who leans much more towards anarchism and prefers to be more of a nuisance to every group defending the status quo rather than focus their energy on one group, calls her out for being a hypocrite about. Sparrow also only semi ironically kins the Doctor from Doctor Who. This was on Quetzal’s call out post too.
Checkers comes from me reading a few articles about Three Portlands and seeing off handedly mentioned that an Allison Chao was on the roller derby team. Three Portlands is kind of like the Library, except she’s both more and less tied to individual realities. There’s only one/three of her in any particular universe. Where the Library is another plane in periphery to every universe, any iteration of Three Portlands is a pocket dimension tied to the corresponding Earth at three points. It’s a college town. Checkers goes to Deer College for a post graduate degree. She’s transgender and bisexual. She’s also a Marxist-Leninist, but instead of doing terrorism, she publishes essays in various journals. She gets her anger out in roller derby. She travels the multiverse on occasion but mostly for research. She’s in a severe academic feud with a genuinely impressive number of alternate selves, including Sparrow, as well as half the academic anomalous community. She’s made out with the captain of the Global Occult Coalition’s school’s derby team. Autistic and bipolar.
The Reaper is a weird one, because she didn’t actually start life as an Allison Chao. She’s very VERY loosely based on a character from a YouTube series, since I liked some of the ideas explored but didn’t really feel comfortable with the creators. Her universe is the least like the “normal” SCP foundation setting. Her world is in an ambiguously historical setting, with most cities, towns, and buildings being vaguely medieval, but she frequently references modern literature that doesn’t make any sense in that context. She’s an anarchist and frequently quotes Proudhon, Bachunin, etc. She has the forgetability hat, but she mostly uses that for sneaking rather than in combat. She claims she found the Library by “getting lost,” although this doesn’t really make sense. She shouldn’t be able to access the Black Queen notes because she doesn’t have a computer. She does anyway. She’s a fairly powerful reality warper on account of (potentially deliberately) not realizing what she’s doing. She’s also an alchemist and writes surprisingly good romance novels. Arguably a terrorist. Trans girl and in at least five different homoerotic rivalries at any given times but not emotionally intelligent enough to notice. Probably gay, definitely ADHD and autistic.
Thanks for asking! It’s been too long since I’ve thought about them.

How do they consciously realize that they like the other character? Does it take them a while?
Thank you for the ask! ; w ;
Useful / Fun Character Development Questions for Couples
Spoilers for HW, StB, ShB, and EW as a fair warning for anyone that hasn't gotten there.
--
TL;DR -> It takes a while. Four expansions worth of time. There's a whole Enemies to Lovers thing with becoming friends being a necessary mid-way point for the both of them. The realization point is in EW when Nomin refuses to let him slip through her fingers once she has that "Oh..." moment during the Sharlayan room scene.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
It does take a while for Nomin to really put together the pieces that she likes Estinien more and more. Honestly, she probably never even thought of it being a possibility? (I guess that's not too much of a surprise given that she doesn't really experience strong romantic or sexual interest on sight). Especially since she did make somewhat of a plea in hopes of becoming friends after he was placed in the infirmary after the Dragonsong War had been concluded. They had been at odds with one another during nearly their entire campaign because she has more dragon-like features than anyone else in their entourage.
I don't have rose-tinted glasses about Ishgard and their views on the Au Ra people based on what we've been given. It wasn't a focal point, thankfully, but it is present. I feel like, even if Estinien may have had a respect for Nomin as the WoL (her power and ability), there are still barriers of prejudice that had to be unlearned (and successfully were over the course of HW!) to see her as more than a perceived heretical figure because of the views the people of Ishgard have born of fear and hatred of the Dravanians.
Meeting back with Estinien within her original homelands (which is one hell of a surprise to her, make no mistake) and helping him and Orn Khai allowed them to speak a little more plainly with one another and build bridges. And maybe it was for the best, because being back on the Steppe dredges up feelings and emotions that Estinien could relate with because they're similar to how he felt with Nidhogg. It offered a time for their shared experience with the Dragonsong War to be that foundation for a strong friendship. (I need to replay the StB DRG content, bear with me as I struggle with some gaps I've also yet to actually extrapolate upon for my own character stuff.)
Around that time is also the first time Nomin's true color of her scales had been revealed to Estinien. She painted them consistently till about the end of StB / start of ShB. So this was also a show of trust and the start of her finally being able to express and be herself to him.
I have a short that I'll release eventually where it does detail the tail end of the battle of Ghimlyt Dark from Estinien's point of view. As Estinien brings her back to safety, Nomin is in and out of a conscious state, a gentle questioning being done by the dragoon all the while to assess her well being, but also to get a grasp on what had happened.
Nomin, when actually conscious under Aymeric's care, dismisses the interactions that she can remember as being that of a dream. That is until Aymeric tells her that it was in fact Estinien that brought her back to safety. From there, it kind of becomes the seed that is planted, though is somewhat forgotten about during all the events of Shadowbringers (I mean, being whisked away to play the role of hero for a different star entirely does kind of take precedence).
Coming back to the Source, experiencing the Echo with Estinien and Gaius, and then being physically back in Estinien's presence is like a, "oh... right. Fuck..." moment. She's really awkward about thanking him for saving her. She's also worried about his interactions with Tiamat before her release, though definitely breathes a sigh of relief once things seem to culminate to her working with them -- and more importantly, in tandem with Estinien.
I think the turning point into romance is when, despite everything going on -- the gravity of events that surround Endwalker -- Nomin can find genuine comfort, happiness, and warmth in being with Estinien. Moments she sees him interacting with Vrtra and other Raen of Thavnair, she recognizes more that he has changed as a person, and has changed for the better. And she can see this more readily, because aside from Alphinaud, she has traveled and spent time with Estinien for the longest amount when put together out of everyone else she knows since coming to Eorzea.
So when Estinien comes and speaks to her plainly in Sharlayan with his own self-realizations and thoughts, she's just... "oh... oh..." and she won't let him just leave out the window after telling her all of that. Because she realizes that after all their growth and healing within one another's company, she's fallen in love with the person he grew into being. Fallen in love with the person who she feels understands her more than anyone else. Likewise, I like to imagine that Estinien has found comfort in their shared experiences and understanding of one another that leads into their strong, loving relationship.

sending this in advance so i don’t forget: final two episodes of tslocg s2, tell me all the thoughts -dan
Tumblr media
bestie I'm processing 😭😭
God I feel like there's so much to cover with all the girls, all their season 2 arcs coming to a close and setting up season 3 (which is happening!!) Overall I have to say the story left something to be desired? Not even the story beats themselves but the buildup. I'm fine with where we leave the girlies but I don't feel like all the storylines were developed properly. I feel like I need to do a post on all four separately (after you also share your thoughts gimmeeee) I probs won't but might elaborate on Leighton lol
Buuut okay to summarize long thoughts succinctly:
Leighton's development, while golden, wasn't built up properly so I can't enjoy properly. She hadn't even mentioned the women's center this season and then BUMM oh hey besties I missed you also I get what you're on about now and I'm spreading the word xoxo. Like, that's a nice thought but just this season Leighton was rolling her eyes at angry feminist crap and hadn't mentioned the women's center since. And I'm not against her and Alicia getting back together but I'm sorry, Tatum was done dirty to enable this sudden-feeling development for Leighton. It feels like season 2 didn't quite pickup the Leighton development where season 1 left off but in the last two eps we were acting like it did. Sure, Tatum was being an ass and like Leighton was in season 1 but it feels harsh to leave her like that after Tatum was nothing but supportive in eps 7 and 8. It's like, oh yeah we don't need her anymore since Alicia's back, okay byeeee. Again I have lots of thoughts on this but in summary: Tatum was done dirty, the idea behind Leighton's arc good but lackluster execution. I do like the sorority storyline finally going somewhere and fuck if I didn't looove the scene between Leighton and her mom, but again it just felt a liiiitle bit unearned. happy she's by far the most content at the end of the season I just wish I could be more satisfied with how it went down.
Bela's arc, on the other hand, was much more meticulously done and though that one ends on an opposite, downer note, at least it was following up on things established throughout the season. I feel bad for girlie but after hitting this lowest point at least she can try and pick herself up again. She's living with the consequences of her own actions and needs this low point to emphasize the consequences of actions, but she'll also need the girlies to help pick her up. It's brutal but at least it's engaging on a storytelling level and doesn't feel like a copout. Thankfully season 3 is happening and we're not leaving her at the lowest point, we can actually go on to build from here. Bela's exercising more self-reflection here and all she needs is to not run away from the problems but look within herself, and love herself. I think that's beautiful, as hard as it was to support her wrongs this season. Solid stuff; not the happiest, but good stories don't equal constantly happy stories.
Whitney had good stuff all this season, not the strongest hitting but a sort of rebuilding of her foundations and I loved that for her. I... don't quite know where I stand on the now love triangle with Canaan and I do feel like the season just leaves her hanging at the end there. Not as happy as Leighton, not as far fallen as Bela. I'm glad she found herself this season but the decision to then end her in a love triangle and moving to Kappa feels more like a catalyst for general drama than in advancement of her own story. We'll see what happens though.
Kimberly had her big storyline in the first half with the financial problems and selling her eggs, and I guess that was that? So now in the second half she was free to exist outside that financial stress but apart from episode 7 it didn't feel like they knew what to do with her. While I'm not nearly as sorry about him as Tatum, Jackson also feels like he was done just a little dirty after all the buildup the two had. And for what, Kimberly and Canaan? I don't hate it, but I also don't have strong feelings either way. Like with Whitney, it feels more like drama for the sake of drama than an organic development. Kimberly was the most stable of the four in this second half and then this happened. I'm trying not to think the idea of a love triangle including two of the girls is inherently bad but I have a few bones to pick with how other storylines got executed. Soooo that doesn't exactly inspire confidence.
Despite being divided into the four main parts that feels messy lol, sorry. But I hope you're ready to share alllll your thoughts because I'm super curious. Even after writing this I'm still processing. I'm just happy we're for sure getting season 3 and will try to just, move on until next November lol. Well I'll also be rewatching the whole show soon, but, you know, after that. I did enjoy the finale and the whole season, the jokes were great and I liked the vibes. Some things just felt rushed in these two episodes and that's not justified imo when season 1 packed a lot too and when season 2 had eps that were more filler than anything.
