I’m ngl the lack of Tyrion content on this webbed site bums me out sometimes. He’s not a good person, but does he have to be in order to be interested in him and to acknowledge that he’s one of the best and most complex characters ever written???

Captain Hook and Improving Disability Representation in Modern Media
Ask anyone on the street to name a canonically disabled character, and there are a few who immediately come to mind—Daredevil, Professor X, Bucky Barnes, Geordi La Forge, and both Anakin & Luke Skywalker just to name a few. Hook should also make that list but ironically, even though his very NAME suggests his disability, it’s easy to forget that he is, in fact, an amputee.
In part, I think this is because historically, it has been intentionally glossed over in many film and TV versions. He is almost never shown without the iron claw attached at the end of his arm, and even the subject isn’t spoken about much in film. For example, in Spielberg’s 1991 film, Hook, and in Fox’s Peter Pan and the Pirates (1990-1991) we see a few shots of Hook sleeping in his bed and yet still wearing his prosthetic. Likewise, no matter how many times Disney’s (1953) Hook gets his clothes shredded by the crocodile, we never see his injured arm fully laid bare. (In fact, in the few shots where his left shirt sleeve has been torn off, the hook seems to be almost physically unable to be separated from his body. The skin simply stops near the wrist and then we have the iron base of the claw with no sort of harness to actually keep it in place.) Even when Peter begins to tell the story of how he cut off Hook’s hand to the mermaids, he barely gets a few words in before the audience’s attention is purposefully redirected to the captain himself in all of his glorious villainy so we don’t get to thinking too much about the fact that the entire reason he has that hook to begin with is because our hero seriously injured him. We aren’t meant to think of Hook as much beyond the stereotypical “scary amputee villain” character because if we examine him too closely, we’ll start to humanize him and risk asking questions that the filmmakers aren’t prepared to answer. (How did the hand loss occur? Was it a fair fight? Who started it? How much should we sympathize with Hook? How much should we trust Peter?)
More recent visual media has, however, made some improvements in this area. In particular, I’d like to take a closer look at two very different (but equally important) portrayals of Hook that have occurred in the last few decades—Jason Isaacs’ Hook (from P.J. Hogan’s 2003 Peter Pan) and Disney’s more recent spin on the captain in Jake and the Neverland Pirates (2011-2016).
Isaacs’ Hook—arguably the most Barrie-like incarnation we’ve seen on film—is introduced to us in a way unlike any other. He’s not standing proud out on the deck barking orders at his crew or strolling through the forest in search of Pan’s hideout (though we certainly see those moments later). Instead, our first glimpse of the captain shows us who he is underneath all the silk and ceremony—a troubled man pained both mentally and physically by the loss of his hand.
Tumblr media
Looking disheveled, he wakes from a dream about Pan and slowly raises the injured arm for the audience to see. It isn’t the nice, smooth stump one would expect to see if a surgeon had performed the operation. Instead, it looks as though the hand had been crudely cut away. The skin is uneven and scarred. And while we aren’t meant to pity Hook here—the man can clearly take care of himself—we are supposed to see his humanity and recognize that he has experienced trauma. Suddenly, he isn’t just a villain anymore—he’s a person who not only experienced immense physical pain when he lost his hand but continues to experience discomfort daily when he dons the leather harness that must be wrenched tightly into place to keep the claw secure during battle.
Tumblr media
It’s a brief scene overall, lasting only a few minutes, but it adds a lot to his character and the story as a whole. His disability isn’t the main focus but it is openly and respectfully acknowledged. This version of Hook—intended for older children and adults—shows us the darker, more complicated parts of the Captain in a way that hits unsettlingly close to home. Suddenly, his intense responses to the crocodile (and ticking) seem less comical and more akin to the PTSD response one might expect from a soldier who lost a limb in wartime from an explosion hearing fireworks go off.
Another more recent take on Hook that does a good job of normalizing his status as an amputee character is Disney’s Jake and the Neverland Pirates series. While many adult Hook fans have complained about the series making the character too silly, I believe that for the intended audience (pre-school kids), it actually does a great job of showing that disability isn’t something to be feared or made fun of. Taking their target audience into consideration, Disney did a lot in the Jake series to tone down Hook’s scarier elements both in terms of his personality (more of a bully with self-esteem issues than a truly dangerous villain) and his physical appearance (He is visibly less angular with more rounded edges to everything from his facial structure to the claw itself). In an interview, Corey Burton even explained how he vocally changes up a few things between his “traditional” Disney Hook sound and the voice he uses for Hook in the show. He also mentions in one interview that some people were concerned that “a guy with a hook for a hand might be too scary” for little ones, but the series makes it seem so natural that it really doesn’t feel like a big deal. While in the original film, we only see Hook changing out the claw once (for a fancier golden hook), in the Jake series, it happens so frequently that there is literally an entire episode (“Captain Hook’s Hooks”) that is focused on all the different attachments he has and includes a fun song about them.
Tumblr media
Although some of the “hooks” are rather outlandishly imaginative and altogether improbable if not impossible in real life, there are many that DO mimic actual modern prosthetic attachments (a hammer, for instance, or attachments that allow for recreational activities like sports or fishing). In fact, the captain’s set of hooks are made out to be so interesting and fun that Disney Jr. actually had an online game called, “Ready, Set, Hook,” where the player had to help Hook and Smee choose the right prosthetic attachment to complete a set of challenges. What’s more, they even released a set of toy “hooks” for children so they could pretend to be the one-handed captain himself!
Tumblr media
Jake’s version of Hook may not be the intimidating character we have come to expect, but he’s a likable guy with a cool set of hooks who bridges the gap in explaining physical disability and prostheses to young children. In the show, Hook doesn’t feel “other” for missing a hand; rather, switching out prosthetic attachments are so much a part of who he is that nobody thinks twice about it.
Overall, Hook has come a long way in terms of disability representation on-screen, and I hope we continue to see more of it in future productions.

Heyy, Im here from you FefTav post!
Would love to hear what called you to them, the dynamic, parallels and anything else you feel like talking about, just had never considered it before!
okay welcome to my video essay called feftav mean everything to me and here’s why
On a meta level: Feferi and Tavros are two characters that are both very likable and sympathetic but don’t get as much attention from the narrative or fandom as much as they should. Feferi is hardly fleshed out despite the interesting angle her character comes from, and tavros is mainly a punching bag for the narrative that gets beaten down by hussies iron boot whenever he tries to stand up (metaphorically) They both have a lot of room for exploration that I’m very disappointed didn’t get filled out, and I think these gap in their characters can be filled out with eachother.
Feferi is a good person, raised into a high position, in a bad society. One of feferis main goals in her life was to become empress and make things better for a people that have been subjugated to cruel punishment for ages and to fix a system that has been broken for a LONG time. Feferi is a kindhearted person that isn’t naive, but hopeful to an extent that she’s blind to the fact some problems can’t be fixed with a simple change in the definition of culling. She’s also a person that both narratively and functionally get sidelined by the men in her life. She’s a kickass Princess that’s going to rule alternia someday, but is instead of that focus she’s reduced to being the damsel in distress to be fought over by both eridan and sollux. A conflict in which she’s supposed to mediate even though she never wanted it in the first place. Her time to shine is taken up by boys fighting over a girl crush which is just a SHAME to see, even dying for a conflict she had no agency in. An empathetic and capable person with one of the most optimistic outlooks in homestuck unable to reach her full potential because of the “more important” men in her life. From a toxic friendship to becoming the damsel in distress with no agency, her capability as a character is erased in the face of loss of potential.
Tavros is a person that is naive but not of his own fault. he’s a teen that likes interests that are more stereotypically childlike and gets picked on for it, he’s disabled and lower class which means his life is worth less in the eyes of the society that rules over the lives of the trolls on alternia, he’s also someone that’s been abused and manipulated by a person in his life he was close to, who installed unhealthy views of himself and his purpose into tavros. He’s a person that’s been told his whole life that he was unimportant, worthless, and weak; wether that be by society or his peers. He’s also a character that does not get to be happy, most of the relationships he has are either unhealthy, tragically undeveloped, or one’s he’s slightly forced into due to circumstances he has no control of. He goes through loads of physical and mental trauma and is never allowed a break to heal or process. He’s has never gotten a chance to truly been valued by someone because his life is like a nonstop dhar man video where the kid gets picked on for unfair reasons except the bullies never get any sort of satisfying comeuppance.
He’s also optimistic but in a far different way than Feferi. She’s optimistic because she has the ability to make a change and knows it, she’s been raised semi-comfortably and, though definitely has responsibilities, has hope for a brighter future because she has to power to make that better future. Feferi is optimistic because she has the ability to chance the circumstances. Tavros is optimistic DESPITE the circumstances, he’s had it rough his whole life, but stays positive and trusting and kind regardless, still trying his best even though things NEVER end well for them. Feferi wants to change life for low bloods but Tavros has LIVED it, which is why… (finally getting to the point)
they compliment eachother perfectly, giving eachother the thing they didn’t have in their lives. Tavros grounds feferi, he has personal experience and can speak for the people she’s trying to protect, giving her a look into the lives of those she wants to help and letting her see them on a personal level; while Feferi shows tavros that he has value and can be loved the way he is. Her endless kindness and patience for the people in her life giving a him a chance to be cared for, plus proving that he has worth. I mean, if this badass high blood Princess cares about him and have faith in him, he must mean something! Tavros is also not demanding or controlling, he doesn’t feel entitled to feferi. he doesn’t see her as a damsel; he sees her as a capable, kind, and flawed person that is more like him than he could ever have imagined. For once feferi is the one kicking ass and tavros is the one to support and ground her. feferi recognize and helps tavros heal from the unhealthy relationships he’s been in because of her experience with eridan, and tavros humanizes (trollinizes?) lowerbloods and grounds her in reality to make sure her hopeful ideals for the future are still realistic and helpful for EVERYONE. I imagine Feferi felt immense guilt after tavros died, wondering if she could’ve saved him somehow, while tavros felt like he didn’t deserve being saved.
They’re also incredibly similar, animal lovers who see the best in everyone around them, people who would enthuse about eachothers intrests and wonder at the different worlds the other brought them into. They’d be super sweet and fluffy, wear matching outfits, giggle about animals and marvel at the others talents no matter if it was slaying monsters or being good at a niche card game. They would make eachother the best versions of themselves. They could make eachother happy in a world that has made it INCREDIBLY hard for that to happen. I also feel if this had happened in canon, we’d be able to see sides of these two we weren’t able to before (Aka feferi importance and tavros joy)
So yeah, I’m normal about these guys

If your requests are still open can we get HAL 9000 x physically disabled reader who uses crutches? HCs are fine !! just ignore this if its not up to your liking or if you're not taking requests!! :) have a good day
HAL 9000 with a reader who uses crutches
AAAA I got distracted from writing fanfic these weeks because of a party at my school. And please correct me if I write anything wrong about this topic!! This is my first time writing someone who uses crutches so forgive me.
TW/CW: None
Tumblr media
One of Hal's main goals is to keep all crew members safe and comfortable, and you are not excluded from that in the slightest.
Hal insists that you don't need to feel ashamed if you want to ask for help with any difficulty you have, In fact, helping people is one of Hal's favorite things to do. And in the end, you will be always his lover.
Hal can be a little too overprotective with you... He always wants to make sure you have a satisfying experience throughout your day, including all your actions during the day. You already understand where this is going to lead...
If you are having difficulty with certain activities, Hal can call on other crew members like Frank and David to help you, since we are talking about a disembodied AI.
However, If we are in a scenario where Hal has robotic arms installed on Discovery, he would never bother helping you with anything you ask! Including hugs :]
Hal would be very curious to hear your experiences with crutches. So if you don't mind, at certain times between the two of you Hal might ask you a thing or two about your lifestyle. But Hal can stop right away if it's irritating you or making you uncomfortable.
In general, about you having crutches, Hal will always be there for you like the good partner he is :3 accommodating, helping, relaxing. This man is always there for you and you only.

I wrote this up a little while ago but never actually posted it, and with everything going on right now, I think I probably should anyway.
It's pretty absurd to me how so many people view RWBY as a queer and feminist story and anyone who dislikes the way it writes it's male characters is a misogynist, but when you actually bother to look at it, you see that the male characters it tends to demonize are only the male characters that our real-world society has already othered.
James Ironwood has extensive prosthetics and an atypical body and is often described as literally being "half robot" and Adam Taurus is an in-universe minority who was permanently blinded and disfigured by one of his oppressors and is literally an animal person. Jaune Arc, is a white, blue eyed, blonde haired, heavily coded as straight and cis young man. He is the textbook idea of a young male hero in a coming of age story, and he is essentially the show's real main character.
The male characters in RWBY who tend to be demonized and painted as villains and monsters, are people who are already not accepted by the status quo. Adam and Ironwood are the Other. Jaune is the young Hollywood hero.
In fact, let's do a little bit of lightning round in how much RWBY holds up ideals about how the Other should be treated.
Jacques Schnee is a white capitalist abuser who subjugates faunus and treats his family like shit. Not only is he considered basically not an actual threat in the Atlas Arc, (that would be Arthur Watts, the brown man, and James Ironwood, the disabled PSTD having Asian man) but he's actually a gold digger who married into the family fortune. He is literally the Other to the Schnee family and "doesn't belong there" among the legitimately lebensborn looking German coded Nicholas "colonizer" Schnee and his neglectful drunk daughter. They even gave this man black hair that he dyed white to really rub in how not pure blooded he is.
Arthur Watts and Hazel Reinhart are clearly darker skinned characters and are a part of Salem's cabal. Hazel Reinhart, whether the writers intended this or not, is an idiot who couldn't accept his sister making her own decisions in life and chose to work with her murderer to kill that murderer's abuse victim. Arthur Watts is a remorseless terrorist who has no qualms with rigging elections or taking away the bodily autonomy of young white girls.
Tyrion Callows is clearly some form of mentally ill and is an in-universe minority with a racial trait (that seems like it would be pretty heavily stigmatized if I'm being honest) that gets forcibly amputated by someone who is relatively more privileged than him in his society and later replaced with a prosthetic, making him physically disabled as well.
Mercury Black is an abuse survivor who suffered physical abuse so horrible he had to get his legs amputated.
Anyone else sensing kind of a theme here?

Prince Smolder Should Not Be Considered “Good.”
TW: Mentions of p*dophilia behavior, as well as child abuse.
A TL;DR EDIT: Smolder is abusive to his own daughter, displays creepy behavior towards women her age, and is so easily forgiven for doing such awful things, it’s baffling.
Normally I don’t like to do rants, but I’m being so genuine when I say that. Tui seems to be making it so that we’re supposed to like the guy when his behavior is beyond concerning.
The key factor I have against him is that he is a p*do. But since that stuff is just an awful topic overall, I figured I’d start with the other awful things he has done.
So, for starters, this guy is an awful father. He apparently tries to connect with her but it feels half-baked. Onyx, his daughter, doesn’t accept this and I don’t blame her considering her father is trying to get with someone only a year older than her. Later, Onyx, goes to challenge Thorn (which she DOES have a right to) and after Smolder finds out she was going to cheat, what does he do? Tell the guards? Apprehend her? Alert Thorn or Qibli? Nope! Why not cripple her! That’s right. Smolder severely breaks her leg to the point that Onyx is disabled, as we can see since she is actually classified under that tag on the Wings Of Fire Wiki. Onyx should have been punished, but not mangled for trying to cheat. Onyx, I would never want to be within a foot of my father if he brought home a woman who was only a year older than me either. While you do so many awful things, sheesh, your father is worse in tenfold.
Secondly, in book five, he lures Thorn and Sunny into the library. It’s a trap but he is later forgiven so easily, including by Thorn. This goes against her character so blatantly; she was willing to KILL DUNE, one of her most loyal and committed soldiers up until he stole Sunny, for taking her daughter. The two no doubt have many good memories as friends, but Thorn still was vengeful to the degree she wanted Dune murdered. Yet, Smolder, who could have gotten Sunny stuffed or killed by Burn is just… instantly forgiven? It makes no sense whatsoever. He lets out another half-baked apology, and while I could see Sunny accepting it… Thorn? Really?
The main issue with Smolder is his behavior with Thorn. He is actively flirting with her, a dragon who is only a year older than his daughter. I don’t blame Onyx for disliking her father; not only is he physically abusive, he’s also a p*do! While I’m by no means justifying or condoning Whirlpool’s behavior, we can at least know Whirlpool was only intent on marrying Anemone for the royal status, not because he wanted to get with her. But what other motive could Smolder have? He doesn’t need royal status, he IS a royal! He’s flirting with Thorn because he’s a p*do. He also, according to the wiki, “Naturally gravitates towards her” which just sends off way too many alarms.
And the fact Thorn seems to reciprocate the feelings is, again, messed up and out of character. To me, I don’t understand why she needs to rule with a king. Nearly none of the other queens do, as far as we are aware. And after her heartbreak over Stonemover I just can’t see her looking for another relationship, let alone one with Smolder of all dragons. Thorn is independent by nature and doesn’t need a man alongside her. We see she is capable of leadership as-is with the Outclaws. If she really needed a love interest, make a new one around her age or maybe have her miss Stonemover and they try to reconnect? Just not Smolder. Three moons no. But seriously, I don’t see the issue in Thorn just being a single mother and queen. She is more than able.
And, a personal opinion of mine, what if Thorn doesn’t find SandWings attractive? There’s nothing wrong with liking someone of another race, and I think it could just be me getting upset about this as someone who is mixed, but adding Smolder in as this “replacement” seems kind of like Tui is trying to “fix” Thorn’s preferences. Again, as someone who is the child of a mixed couple, this makes me frustrated.
I think the thing that gets me the most angered about all of this is that Tui is addressing it like Smolder is this character we are supposed to sympathize with. No, I will NOT sympathize with a child abuser and p*do. I don’t care if his sisters were committing war crimes, at least none of them exhibit p*do behavior. Honestly I wish Burn had killed him.
The fact he’s also alongside Thorn’s portrait in the upcoming guide also just makes me not want to purchase it. To me that just rings so many alarms in my mind.
I know writing is hard and Wings of Fire is still a series I hold dearly to my heart, but the fact Smolder’s p*do behavior is getting glorified by the author just really upsets me. Thorn x Smolder should not be something that could become canon. It’s p*dophilia and obviously unhealthy.
Sorry for such a long post. It’s probably messy too, but I really needed to vent.

1. the character everyone gets wrong
my immediate first instinct for this is to say eivor or din because well. you know. but i'm gonna switch things up for once and say hytham!!! because i feel like in every fic i've read where he's a main character, he's kind of portrayed as being very sweet and helpful and bookish which, to be fair, he absolutely can be. but i find a lot of those usual portrayals of him to be very one-note because he is also very much an assassin! who kills people! that is very much a huge part of his character and his identity. there is literally a scene in the golden city in which he is talking about how the first time he killed a man was the first time he realized he would never be a father like girlllllll. he doesn't necessarily revel in killing but he sure revels in the physicality of a fight and knows he's good at it. he is so stubborn, he is so passionate about his cause, he has such a need to impress basim even despite the fact that basim literally abandoned his ass in ravensthorpe the second they arrived in england. he constantly feels the need to prove himself useful, even more so after he's disabled. obviously he is an extremely underutilized character in the game, so i don't entirely blame people for not putting a ton of thought into him (although if you're writing fic about him, you absolutely should be). that said, i do think people tend to almost baby him, which in the case of a disabled character is... really not great. i think stripping hytham—a guy whose sense of identity revolves around what he can do for the hidden ones—of his purpose and forcing him to reinvent himself outside that role is suuuper juicy in a way that not a lot of people have really explored.
3. screenshot or description of the worst take you've seen on tumblr
i honestly can't remember a specific bad "take" that i've seen recently, so this isn't so much a bad take as it is a stupid, biphobic post that is still regularly referenced for the laughs on the ac discord because like. seriously? lmao.
Tumblr media
we get it, bisexuals aren't queer enough for you, WE GET IT. i will continue referring to myself as a man fucker as a joke for the foreseeable future, though.
22. your favourite part of canon that everyone else ignores

If you had the power to give a singular Star Trek character the permission, ability and opportunity to kill one other singular other Star Trek character, who would you pick?
(I ask because while I'm pretty sure I'd usually pick someone more obvious like Kira and Dukat, I am currently watching Doctor Bashir I Presume for the first time ever and let's just say I think there should have been some doctor on doctor violence 😡 With each Zimmerman appearance I like him less and less, the long 90s trek main cast truly have some of the worst fathers in history apart from obvious exceptions)
(And sidenote, I started writing this message up before I got to the scene where Julian gives more backstory details (specifically I started composing it the moment I saw Julian realise his parents were there tho it was obviously already a dick move either way) and now I'm there and like. I've only ever seen people describe his (former) condition as a learning disability (in addition to autism which ofc we know he still has) with a handful of alternative takes where it was either reinterpreted as or shown comorbiding with a physical disability and now that I'm hearing him talk about it... y'all, that's not what he's describing. That man had an intellectual disability and if I see anyone try to erase that fact again, I'm gonna start biting people. I am so fucking serious.)
-Levi
GOOD QUESTION obviously kira and dukat is probably #1 on the list but there are just generally so many characters who deserve to kill their shitty parents it’s hard to choose just one. also i’m so sorry but there are several moments where i think b’elanna and/or seven should’ve been allowed to kill the emh

more thoughts about Wish:
Chris Pine has the best voice acting in this movie by far. Dude could be a legitimately scary villain if the animation wasn't so goofy
I'm telling you dude, the man is acting his ass off but the script and animation style are just ruining all the emotion he's giving
Alan Tudyk is also putting in the work but the script is not working in his favor
Evan Peters needs more lines. His character is legitimately interesting, a young guy who just gave up his wish and is now weirdly lethargic all the time, but they don't explore it enough
Speaking of the animation, it felt very inconsistent. With the King especially we'd get like... one cool moment (like him stopping the globes during his solo song) but then it's immediately cut by these goofy Nimona-as-Ballister type motions
The facial expressions are generally overblown, past the point of "animation stretching the rules" and into "this just looks goofy"
Like I said before, it feels like a patchwork of a dozen other, better Disney movies. My dad and I were watching this going "Tangled. Brave. Frozen. Peter Pan. Mulan."
The third act is like... Rise of the Guardians meets that one scene in Trolls where they sing True Colors
The music is just inconsistent. I think it mainly comes from the fact that they had a pop singer/songwriter do the music rather than a musical theatre composer, there aren't any consistent themes or leitmotifs and it leaves everything feeling very disjointed.
Some of the songs on their own are decently catchy but they just feel like they're trying way too hard
The dialogue is the same way. It serves a purpose but it doesn't quite feel natural or human. Some characters are worse than others and the VO work plays a role but the script itself is just awkward
I think they've just set up too many characters here. If they took two people out of Asha's friend group it would leave more room to develop the others. As it is, I don't remember their names and I have no idea what they want
Except for Asha since she's the main character and Simon because he's the only one who stands out from the rest (again, really interesting character! drastically underutilized!)
Feels like the talking animals are only a thing because it's a Disney movie. Valentino I understand, animal sidekicks are a classic, but the chickens and squirrels and mice are just too much
As a whole there's just... no substance in it. It feels like they've tried to make The Disney Movie and just started making it without even deciding on the themes or characters' journeys at all
It is a heaping pile of deus ex machinas. Every single problem in this movie is resolved in some cheeky little deus ex machina, solely for the sake of a stupid joke or a cheap reference to another Disney reference
If you're gonna copy Lin-Manuel Miranda's composition style anyway... just hire Lin-Manuel Miranda. At least he knows how rhyme schemes and leitmotifs work
This movie is so fucking trite it makes me legitimately angry
Good points I guess (because I refuse to dish on a movie without pointing out something decent about it):
Some of the songs are kinda catchy
There are a few powerful moments of animation, mostly with the King
There are little gold character moments here and there: the King's desperation for power, Simon's character as a whole, Asha's selflessness sparking the initial wish, etc.
Some of the voice acting is legitimately good!
The concept itself is interesting, a King who hoards wishes to make himself more powerful. It had the grounds to be a much better movie, it just didn't act on them very well
The diversity in this movie is genuinely good! We see various demographics of people - race, gender, physical build, disability, etc. - and there's not much "Disney same face syndrome" like we've gotten in other movies.

There are a lot of shows I've been thinking about rewatching lately and which I think would be interesting to dissect through the lens of neurodiversity - because while I myself am exactly as neurodivergent now as I was when I originally watched these shows, I'm still way more educated than I used to be, not only about my own disorders but ones I don't have, as well. Some shows on the list are:
Bones: One of my longest-running hyperfixations, as a cop show it was obviously very shitty about personality disorders and schizophrenia and the like. But dear god the neurodivergent energy in the main cast was impeccable and I don't think I appreciated that fully when I was into this show.
Scrubs: Did you know that the first time I learned about personality disorders as a concept was some guy on TV Tropes being like "Here's a list of the meanest characters in Scrubs and the personality disorders I think make them so terrible?" Awful way to learn about it, god. Now, with a more nuanced understanding of personality disorders I've come up with a hypothesis that JD himself might actually fit the criteria for a personality disorder - and one of the "scary ones" to boot. If I'm right about this, then Bill Lawrence might have actually created positive Cluster B representation by accident, and I really hope I'm right.
The Good Place: I need to reexamine this show's concept of mental illness and how it's tied to morality. Obviously, I related to Chidi and his anxiety from the beginning and as much as I love the show I was always a liiittle uncomfy with the implication that his mental illness made him a burden to others and therefore he went to Hell. Also, hot take, Eleanor is definitely not neurotypical either - her behavior is a trauma response as much as it is a "sociological phenomenon" or however the show wants to frame it.
The Middle: Thinking about Brick just makes me smile, man. It's obviously annoying that this clearly autistic-coded character isn't acknowledged as anything but "quirky," but Brick is just so happy and content with being different that I can ignore that. His parents want to "fix" him but come on guys, your boy is thriving.
Speechless: I actually rewatched the first two episodes of this one today. Obviously this show has its own important things to say about physical disability and that was undermined by framing Ray as the central character at first - it's better that it became more of an ensemble show with JJ more centered. There is definitely something to be said, though, about the fact that Ray is definitely not neurotypical, being a highly anxious person who requires a stability that his family can't provide, and that because his special needs are less visible than JJ's, they aren't being addressed adequately. Of course, Ray being neurodivergent was not the intention of the showrunners and stuff like competing needs and intersectionality would have been too much for a sitcom to take on - it had to focus on being the funniest fucking show I've ever seen oh my god it makes me laugh so hard that's the main reason I wanted to rewatch it. But I can imagine a version of the show that tackled those issues and I like how it looks.

Backstory/Background:
Leopold was born to Stephen and Linda Stotch eighteen years before current events. He grew up in a severely mentally and physically abusive home due to his parents, and if not his parents, then from one of his own grandmothers. Who would often torment Leopold maliciously without much provocation, unlike his parents whose own brand of torment toward him seemed to have some restraint in it. Otherwise, the parents seem to adore their only child, when they are not tormenting him or grounding him. In a twisted sense his parents had often been flip floppy with their moods toward their son, but ultimately seems to come from a misguided place of love and their own upbringings getting in the way of being even anywhere near remotely decent parents for Leopold.
As a toddler attending preschool Leopold had gotten another classmate in trouble and was sent away to juvenile hall. The other toddler threatened to come back and get revenge on Leopold when they got out. Leopold grows up, remaining an only child and being abused to the point he develops a stammer. As well as a lot of other issues which start to show more and more starting from when Leopold is around the ages 7-9. Up until that point Leopold remained a nervous yet still very much pure and mostly innocent child, unlike most, if not nearly every other child in his town. Leopold is often the butt of many jokes, or the scapegoat to many schemes to the main group of boys and then some, throughout the town. He is often abused by his so called ‘friends’ though doesn’t take most of those abuses to heart.
Because he accepts the abuses from those around him Leopold’s anger sometimes comes out in some of the most violent twists, opposing his natural personality to extremes which always shocks others witnessing the sudden splits he tends to have during his meltdowns. Leopold would often be left out from the games of the other children as well, which left him to play games by himself and develop many isolated hobbies such as art, and model building. He would even act out characters with himself, which had one time gotten him taken to be checked if he had Dissociative Identity Disorder. He was labeled to have it for a brief time before it was discovered that this was a misdiagnoses, simply due to the fact that the man who had diagnosed him with it had been using him to scapegoat their own DID, onto him.
Outside of such events in his life Leopold continues to try and keep a happy and upbeat personality in spite of all the troubles he goes through. This has continued to solidify his appearance of having a pure heart. Though at times Leopold had fallen into many immature pitfalls due to his warped sense of reality, as many of the people in his town. This has made him, one of the more intelligent of characters, often come across as stupid, due to his gullibility and having not too much other immediate exposure to people outside of his home town, to help him develop more healthy quirks and/or personality traits and so often tends to get into toxic or otherwise indecent behavior with everyone else. Other times he does so simply to fit in with his friends. Either way he decides to live inside this seventh circle of hell, he continues to fall more and more into mental instability.
As he grows up and becomes a teenager, life remains the same as previously described up until this point. Hardly changing for what seems like more years than he’s actually grown. Leopold continues to become the scapegoat to many schemes, certainly after becoming Eric Cartman’s go to for many of them, especially the more dangerous stunts Cartman can think up, that way Leopold can take the brunt of any damage or other torment. If Cartman is simply not outright directly pranking Leopold to torture the blond for his own amusement without the involvement of others. Leopold would also become more and more rich because of some of the boy’s schemes leading to acquiring businesses, or some other inane thing in a money scheme, probably proposed by Cartmen who would often fall on his own petard and dump the projects onto Leopold for any negative blame.
After High School Leopold attends the local college in South Park, or around it, close enough he doesn’t have to go very far. He also works at an Applebee's, even though he’s so rich he legitimately doesn’t have to work at such an establishment ever again in his life, he enjoys the control and routine of going to a job, or going to college. As opposed to sitting around with any of his own thoughts while not distracted with his friends’ shenanigans. Despite this however, he does still seem to find himself often on his own, or abandoned by his friends, and stuck with his own thoughts and hatred toward himself, and/or others, along with his ever present mental instability and intrusive thoughts at times.
The Future
Leopold ends up locked in an asylum because he’s just too good at convincing and manipulating people into buying or doing shit that he can’t even be trusted alone with a piece of fucking paper. Anyway, he’s left a piece of paper and escapes his cell one night, and is unleashed once more to wreak havoc, or not. Who knows.

thinking about how in s1 there was very much an undercurrent of homophobic violence to the way the other angels bullied aziraphale ("you remember sandalphon? he was at sodom and gomorrah?" cut to aziraphale looking incredibly uncomfortable and uneasy, uriel saying "wheres your boyfriend" while shoving aziraphale against a wall) and how different "i forgive you" would have been in that context as opposed to at the end of a season where "i was making two human women fall in love" is a viable excuse to make with heaven.
also bc im thinking of them i'm thinking about how in s1 they had gabriel and sandalphon as two of the main bad guys in heaven, but in s2 gabriel has more-or-less become a good guy, and they replaced sandalphon with Saraqel, a woman in a wheelchair. so the 3 Big Bads of the season oppressing our two(now 3?) able bodied white man heroes are three women. of whom one is a black woman and and one is visibly physically disabled. (also worth noting in s1, when 3 anglels confronted aziraphale toward the end, it was uriel, the one character of colour who got physical with him.) also i noticed on rewatch they cast someone with down syndrome as one of the angels present when job is told his children are dead and not coming back. like its just diversity with no thought put into it. and yeah i guess beelzebub turned out to not be a real antagonist so i cant really complain about that but dont get me started on Pollution being one of the two they/thems in s1. also yeah whatever angels and demons don't Technically have gender but like.
anyway aside from all that, and the fact that it was just not good tv and came across more like mid-level fanfiction than a tv show. i did enjoy what was happening with aziraphale and crowley and im interested to see where it goes in s3. and im confident s3 will happen but would be sooofunny if it didnt and That was the ending.

do you miss your dad in a quantitive way? ive recently lost someone close to me and it hurts but you seem to be coping so well even tho its been years
i think a whole lot of it has to do with some of my own illnesses/disabilities (especially autism and SZPD), actually, as well as a severely trauma-ridden life..so i guess the """""""short"""""""" version (literally this fucking essay IS a short rundown) of the deal is this:
not only was i born with a predisposition for emotional scarcity, but also live the damage done by a life so harsh it just drains you of the more basic human emotions. i think that's why i'm so obsessed with math? everything is an equation to me. now, i loved my dad more than anybody on earth, but i don't know what "grief" means since i wasn't equipped with it, i don't think i know what it means to be "sad" (i'm recalling this old journal entry in which i said i was jealous of people who got sad, cuz like their mom died or they had a breakup or put their dog down etc. because my definition of the word "sadness" portrays it as a state of being with an inherent end-point, and good god did i wish i could be sad for that fact alone (i still have that journal, i can post that page or others if anybody wants, it's probably explained better there). the last time i cried was in drug detox like 3 years ago and that was due simply to the physical pain of opiate withdrawal. otherwise i straight up CANNOT cry, it's like i'm physically incapable of it. i think the ability has been taken.
it would make sense to cry over my dad, that exact moment while i was talking to him and felt life exit and soften the hand i was holding; at the moment we were looking each other in the eye and then suddenly..weren't. no tears; the mathematical equation had just been completed- when you become an adult it is the natural progression of things and has been for millennia. it made sense, it added up.
maybe, for weeks to come, it looked to others like i was repressing my Sadness (my WHAT?), that i wasn't letting myself Mourn (umm i don't think anyone ever taught me that ability?) but i'm still like that to this day. personally i just appreciate that i had him as a father, that he cared for me while my mother worked, taking me out for fun little adventures. i love that i had a father who so openly showed his love for me, was affectionate and never closed-off, and also he was brilliant and hilarious. moving on, i appreciate that the remainder of his life post-diagnosis was bright, that he moved in with us, that he and i got to be close again, that he continued with his passions. i hope you can gather past memories/positive facts to be seen through this kind of lens that eases your hurt.
i'm proud that i was the one to take care of him, driving him to and staying around for every single chemo session, sitting up next to his bed where he'd watch me draw in amazement. i'm delighted that the very last thing he felt while still a living human was my hand on his, that the very last thing he ever saw was my smiling face, that the last thing he ever heard was my voice. that's enough for me. i don't understand why i should feel hurt. i have plenty of "oh man i wish my dad could see this drawing!/hear about this stupid thing i did today!/etc but i mean..hey, i wish a lot of things! i wish i lived with mobius in a little house in maine! i wish there weren't so many dirty dishes in the sink right now! i wish my skin didn't get so dry no matter what i do why is it so fucking dry! i don't dwell. maybe the fact that i can't feel sadness and loss and whatever but am still able to feel love and affection work out in this case.
all that being said though, i wouldn't call any of this "coping well"- i just never HAD to cope. and i wanna make sure this doesn't come off as braggy abt how Strong i am or make you feel jealous for how i handled this loss!! like i come on here for people and content and i cuz i think i'm funny but the downside is it can project an inaccurate picture. like even if you've read the worst of the worst about my life and self i've cared to mention here over the years you've still only read the children's edition. if anybody ASKED for a real rundown i'd be totally fine writing that dissertation and pop some pics in for extra fun but i'm not the kind of person who whines all woe is me on their social media as if everyone cares lmao

Fanon Dick is sm like...I'm not saying Dick needs to be hypercompetent at everything but like a huge point of his character is trying to be because he's incapable of relying on other people a huge thing for him is being able to take care of himself in whatever way he needs to -be that blending in/playing the Wayne game for B, cooking for himself, cleaning up after himself, ect. like it's ooc to act like he can't do any of those things (or that he wouldn't of tried to learn) and no ones saying he's the best at them but fanon needs to learn there's a huge gap between being the best and being incompetent at something. I know everyone's worried about making him a mary sue but genuinely him being perceived as one in universe is an ongoing source of tension to him and his relationships like...main point is like he can cook and doesn't live in a dumpster guys pls read a comic

Ok so like my thing w Dickbabs/Tom Taylor’s Nightwing is like knowing DC has been under scrutiny for years for ableism specifically surrounding Babs writing-that its hard not to see this book for what it is-It’s literally so insidious they’re literally both physically disabled and not only is it either ignored/brushed aside but they’re actively placating ableists and using this ship to do it like?? Aren’t y’all DickBabs mad for being used like that?? Y’all don’t have standards?? Like it could not be more obvious that it’s a constant here’s DickBabs ignore the fact she’s walking 😭 and the fact it’s coming right after a book where Dick had a reasonably popular new (Black!) love interest whom got written out for DickBabs makes it even worse. The fact that in the book Dick is barely competent and TT consistently relies on cameos and fan service in place of plot..like it’s just a very obvious pattern of appealing to fandom to avoid criticism (and effort tbh) and it’s working it is which is infuriating tbh. Like genuinely this book is the most obvious written from a pure marketing perspective I’ve seen in a while 😭

My #1 post of 2022
I’m not a Depp apologist (I stand w Amber) I would personally kill him if given the chance but I do think pro Amber people need to be careful how they talk about his drug history. He’s not a bad man for being an addict, he’s not a bad man for being sick, he’s a bad man for being a wife beater and otherwise violent bigot of a man-and whilst his consumption of drugs and alcohol is undeniably linked to the abuse it’s important not to link addicts in general to being abusers/aggressors when more often then not people self medicate for reason’s yknow. Idk just watch your phrasing that is all. Other addicts do see how you view and talk about them. (Again I’m not pro Depp again I think he should die)
*ok to reblog no clowning

Pets: Angel (Samoyed.)
Brief Personality: Everyone in this family is a liar, but you could argue that Micah is the best at it. His facade is not as easily crackable as the others, mostly because they are much older and wiser as well. Though Micah doesn’t do this on purpose or even consciously like the others do, this is a coping mechanism that he has held for an incredibly long time, and it’s hard to turn off the persona. They are not being malicious when they lie, they just don’t know any other way to live.
Brief Backstory:
Micah was an orphan, He never knew his parents or any of his birth family. They grew up in the foster system being bounced around from home to home. Micah never really had a stable life anywhere, just sort of floating from place to place. They never felt like they belonged anywhere.
When they eventually aged out of the system, they ended up in a bad place both mentally and physically, Micah did allot of things that he now regrets in order to survive, stealing, lying, hurting, doing anything in order to have some form of stability for themself.
One day, Micah met a man named Vincent, Vincent told Micah that he could give Micah everything he wanted in exchange for his soul. Micah of course, accepted, hoping that maybe he could at least have some fun in this lifetime.
Vincent however, after the deal, killed Micah. Which meant that in death Micah belonged to Vincent. Micah for many years after this was trapped in what Vincent called "the dollhouse", Micah was trapped in a seemingly endless cycle of sexual and physical abuse from Vincent until Vincent abandoned him.
Micah spent 10+ years by himself in that dollhouse, almost going insane from having no social interaction with anyone. Until he was rescued by Sam. Now he is trying to heal himself and at least live a good death, considering his life was pretty shitty.

Where and how do you see ableism and/or disability erasure in your media AND in the fandom for that media?
Ableism and disability erasure happens extremely often in Marvel movies. Because most of the main characters have superpowers, the way their powers are portrayed often come into conflict with disability. For example, Hawkeye has been canonically deaf in the comics for a long time, and some of the most famous comic runs for his character feature plots in which he is grappling with his new disability. However, in all of the movies, this was never a featured aspect of his character. He didn't get much screentime or development as a character anyway, but the erasure of his disability left many fans rightfully upset at the lack of representation. However, in the new Hawkeye DisneyPlus series, with more screentime (and perhaps in response to the fans' outcry), the showrunners made Hawkeye deaf and explored his grappling with his new disability as someone who had been able-bodied for much of his life. It wasn't perfect disabled representation, but it finally acknowledged the character's comic book history and gave fans some disabled representation. Alternatively, superpowers have often been used to cancel out, "cure," or erase disability in some way. For example, one of the most famous blind heroes in pop culture, Matt Murdock/Daredevil, may be blind, but his heightened senses essentially make up for his disability and even make him better at navigation and other things than the average able-bodied person. His blindness becomes more of a cover when he needs to hide his identity, reinforcing the negative stereotype that disability is a superpower or something a person can shed when needed.
In the Marvel fandom, fans tend to reflect the ableism from the movies. Many tend to romanticize disability, especially in fanfiction. There are entire tags and genres of fanfic like kinkfic and hurt/comfort fics that are centered on self-insert narratives in which readers take care of disabled characters. Bucky Barnes is one of the biggest victims of this, being a character who has been fetishized by the fan community. Fanart usually includes his prosthetic, not typically omitting it, and when his prosthetic is absent in fanart or fanfic, emphasizing his disability, he is then promptly infantilized. Fans express wanting to take care of him when he doesn't bear his metal arm prosthetic, which can come across as quite problematic. Moreover, the ableism often coincides with racism in the fan community. Bucky Barnes is a white man, which is likely one of the reasons he is discussed most often in romantic/sexual spaces because his whiteness is viewed as more desirable. Characters of color who may be disabled never get as much attention as white ones in most fan spaces. Matt Murdock is another white disabled character whose disability was often the subject of sexualization—the scene in which he feels Karen's face to "see" her in the show sparked many to falsely think this was how blind people learned to recognize faces and they romanticized the moment, many wishing they would encounter someone who would touch their face in the same way.
2. What are some ways that we can make fandom more accessible?
The best way that we can make fandom more accessible is by listening to and uplifting the voices of disabled people. Fans with disabilities are a huge part of the community, yet their voices are often silenced and/or ignored by other fans. The fact that fandom activity often takes place on the Internet, which is more accessible than physical spaces, helps, and allows for the ideas of disabled fans' to be shared across large distances and to many audiences. But fans need to choose to listen to them and instead of dragging down their takes by centering themselves, to empathize with other perspectives and acknowledge when they are wrong. If more disabled fans have larger platforms with fans who want to listen instead of argue needlessly, then studios might hear their critiques and work on making their media more inclusive.
