Ranting about Nucani

There is something I want to express and this fandom should know.

Nu: Carnival is a Harem game but unlike most games in the genre the relationships with MC are all canon within the same story, there are no "Routes", no "Alternate Universe/Timelines", it's all 1 Main Story where you get to gradually meet all the Characters who'll be your companions, in this game named Clan members, and all of them one way or another end up falling for Eiden (MC), which makes polyam relationship canon with Eiden as the center:

Like very few games have polyam representation, let alone a positive one, like yes the polycule it's very Eiden central but even then all the Clan Members interact with one another, as we see mainly in the time limited Events but also in the Main Story, and have friendly and amicable interactions, they rely on one another sometimes even without Eiden being involved.

But also, Aster and Morvay have a relationship established too since way before the events of the prologue of the game, Kuya and Quincy have hinted some sort of situationship (idk I don't care about Quincy and my knowledge about Kuya is limited to what happens in the story and events cause I have no limited SSRs nor have I read any of his Intimacy Rooms).

[Also if any of you knows of any other relationship that have been hinted at that i'm missing feel free to share, i specifically ask of you to refer to only canon, i know in fanon anything and everything is possible and sometimes we may be missperceiving some interactions between characters so i ask of you to take those rose tinted glasses off and see unfiltered canon, it's hard for me too ngl so dw]

All this started with some posts I saw about ppl feeling bad for Yakumo and/or Edmond to be "forced into a polyam relationship" when they are the "most romantic members" and "deserve a monogamous relationship", their words not mine, as if mono > poly , but also do you really think they're against it!?

One thing is being Clan Members against their will (which is all Huey's fault btw), having to work together to regulate the Altars' Essence (or their own) and then another one completely is involving themselves in a personal and intimate way with Eiden, which the latter they all did in their own terms and out of free will.

Also i wanna share one of the best and my fav scenes with Karu, which i know not everyone was able to experience it cause it's hidden in the Intimacy Rooms of a Limited SSR, but it expresses exactly why the polycule is consensual.

Context: Eiden has been worrying about forcing the Clan Members to be with him because he is the New Grand Sorcerer, against their will just because of Huey's magic that ties them together and the responsibility of Regulating the Altars and basically maintaining stability in the Klein Continent.

His worries began (at least that i noticed) in "Eerie Escapade" (Halloween Event), that was also the first time Garu got hurt while protecting Eiden and the first time Karu got mad at him and fronted to yell at Eiden (which is my another fav scene of Karu omg i love him so much i gotta go back and take screenshots of that but that's for another post), the second one being in "Army x Blood x Oath" (which are the screenshots i'll show u)

Because this are the Intimacy Rooms of Garu/Karu's Limited SSR this scene focuses on Eiden feeling guilty because Garu got hurt in the past (Halloween Event) and this time he lost his memory (temporarily, due to this event's story) and Eiden blaming himself for it all and wondering if they would be better off without him, but the same can and is applied to the rest of the Clan Members, seeing how Eiden met and approached Rei while respecting his privacy and independency even tho he's also a Clan Member and the newest introduced in the story, means that the Limited Events are also canon and part of the story because Eiden seems to be growing and learning from previous Events and showing that development in future Events and the Main Story.

Karu also mentions that Garu (prior to losing his memories) was also worrying about the same thing Eiden was, like 'what if Master (Eiden) stays with us just because of the contract with Huey? :c' and he calls them both idiots because they don't communicate and fronts to fix it! (Mighty Karu to the rescue)

And talking about "Eerie Escapade" that is also the event where Yakumo's possessiveness towards Eiden shows, i'll admit i haven't seen the last room but i feel like those people i mentioned before are using it as fuel to their idea, because if Yakumo is jealous of other Clan Members interacting with Eiden and "Wants him all to himself" that must mean he wants a monogamous relationship, right?

WRONG!

That just means Yakumo is a complex person that feels different emotions specially when it comes to the most important person in his life (Eiden) other than his grandparents!

And Yakumo feels guilty for having those feelings, not because of them being in a polycule and he not wanting to be in it, but because he has trauma and sees his desires and wants as selfishness and he would never allow himself to be selfish cause he doesn't want to hurt people, he's a people's pleaser! He lives with constant fear of hurting others like the Great Serpent did when it killed many (but apparently there may be more that meets the eye, because the current event hinted that the Great Serpent actually liked humans and took care of children ???)

And Yakumo dealing with those feelings along with his yokai powers as a descendant of The Great Serpent have been the main topic of his last 3 Limited SSRs, which is great because that means CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT~

Now unfortunately i cannot talk about Edmond's Intimacy Rooms as i'm missing ALL OF HIS SSRs (why do you hate me Edmond if ily) but from what i've seen he's also pretty happy being with Eiden, heck even HIS MOM is happy his son is with Eiden!

That's right, she's the first and only parent of the Clan Members that knows and approves of their relationship, if it weren't because most of them are orphan we could get many more... i wonder if Yakumo's grandparents are aware hmmm ... and we all know Olivine's parents are gonna HATE it xD and maybe Garu's wolf pack will approve of Eiden by the end of this event.

Shen Yuan nodded, bringing his free hand to where his and Binghe’s had been clasped together most of the day. He moved to cradle Binghe’s palm as his thumbs lightly stroked his hand. “I didn’t know what to think after you came back. And now so much has changed in such a short time. I.”

He hesitated and Luo Binghe let him, eyes focused on his face while Shen Yuan remained looking at their hands. After several long moments of slight frowning, he prompted cautiously, “Is this about yesterday?”

“Binghe, you’re the most important person in this world. I mean that this world is, quite literally, yours for the taking. You could have anything, anyone, and I’m not. You don’t know what I was like before I died but guys like you… well would never even pay attention to guys like me even if I was looking for that kind of thing,” he admitted. “You were quite literally a fantasy and I was seen as pathetic for looking past that to see the depth of you and your experience. In a lot of ways, I was straight up pathetic, but I did and do care about you. I always will. And something that scares me is that you will one day see me as I am deep inside and want nothing more than to be rid of me.

“Yes, you are too young for me for all that we are only a bit over four years apart in age, but the issue is what your age means. I know just how much life you have left to experience and how it will change your outlook on things. I adore you and want you to be happy. I’m not so arrogant to think that what you have learned would cement itself into your brain and supersede all that you will experience. I want you to be sure, that’s all.”

Luo Binghe stared at him, speechless and dazed because what was he talking about?! He was so confused! Did he somehow think Binghe would regret becoming his husband???

“Shen Yuan,” he tried slowly, trying to give his mind a chance to catch up. “I do not understand. I am sure about you and the other Luo Binghe is proof that my conviction is unwavering even under more difficult circumstances. You make me happy, just as Yuan-ge made the other me happy. He didn’t have to do anything to achieve that but be himself and by that Binghe’s side. I don’t want the world you claim is mine; I just want you.”

“You shouldn’t limit yourself,” Shen Yuan responded, almost scolding.

“You consider my desire to marry you limiting myself?” Luo Binghe asked in disbelief. “A-Yuan, beloved, you died because you were enraged at the thought of me having an unhappy ending. You have fought fate itself to make me safe here, have taken on the weight of the world to ensure my very future. How could having the honor of being your husband be considered limiting?”

Shen Yuan frowned at him and Luo Binghe felt like he was going crazy. Just, just–! He shuffled to the side a bit and nearly bowed to the man as he said, “What I want is to have a family, A-Yuan. Parents would be nice, but I want to make a family with you. I want to be yours as I pray you would allow yourself to be mine.”

“But, your empire–”

“I don’t want it!” Luo Binghe exclaimed. “If it meant I couldn’t have you, I don’t want it! It didn’t make the other me, the first me, happy, nor did his gigantic harem. A-Yuan, we could leave Qing Jing Peak, leave the cultivation world today, and I would love making a home with you of ease and happiness. No, I would love making a household with you, because you are my home. I would marry you right now if you would allow it, that’s how sure I am of you. And please don’t say it’s because I’m young; the other me was here and he felt just as strongly about this as I do. 

“Stop waiting for me to find something or someone better, A-Yuan. You’re it, for me. You’re my ultimate goal, my desire, my happiness, my heart. Book Review 55 - The Gods Are Bastard Volume Four by D. D. Webb

This is properly a review of Books 11, 12 and 13 of the gargantuan web serial The Gods Are Bastards, which I read in one massive sprint back in August, and also mark the exact point stops including book summaries in the table of contents. So caveat lector, all errors are my own here. Though this is hopefully the last review I’ll need to open by saying that for a while.

The serial is set in a world that’s best described as ‘someone’s D&D setting left to cook for a couple hundred years, and which is now undergoing a magitech industrial revolution’. Quite literally, actually – as it was revealed in the previous volume that the setting is a Lord of Light-style experiment by far-future space-magic-weilding scientists from Earth who were insufferable nerds even before their experiments and millennia of treating the world around them as an experiment drove them insane. All of which becomes much more plot-relevant in this volume, with one book’s main plot dedicated to an imperial concubine learning how computers work in what is like 90% of the way to a femslash harem anime, and the main villains of another being a cybernetics cult who were objectively the coolest thing to show up in a hundred thousand words.

This volume returns more focus to the ostensible protagonists of the serial (sophmore class at Adventuring U), while also splitting them up so Triss (the only-occasionally-murderously-racist paladin) can go get some character development and also spin out the cast even more. Which may have been part of the reason this is the volume I started to burn out on the series in this volume, really – I have, I think, an unusually high tolerance for sprawling casts of characters. But there’s really only so many different sets of sympathetic plucky teenagers learning to bond and work together I can take before I literally stop being able to tell them apart. Certainly my limit of characters I actually cared about got hit some time before Triss’ half dozen new fellow thieves guild apprentices were introduced. At the point where I’m waiting for a murder demon to get loose just to clean up the dramatis personae a bit.

I mean admittedly it didn’t help that they all had the most incredibly predictable character arcs imaginable and none of them ever really got enough screentime or, like, creative energy to ever become memorable. The one besides Triss who got much independent focus was instead someone whose entire character, arc, and impact on the plot was ‘realizing she’s trans and being loved/accepted/supported for it’. Which I acknowledge many people find important and validating, but if I am looking for Representation Fiction it probably won’t be a million words into an epic fantasy web serial (and the author can clearly do better! Ingvar is trans and it clearly informs his character and backstory and he still gets to, like, affect the plot and do things).

Though honestly I’d probably forgive the bloated cast if at this point I wasn’t getting, well, either bored or impatient with the conflict of the story. Which is to say – look, the story’s titled The Gods Are Bastards, I don’t think I’m being unfair in expecting a certain rebelliousness or blasphemy in the narrative. But it’s been 13 books, and all morality aside, 13 books of the protagonists working for Gods and Empire and University and either upholding the status quo or mildly reforming it from within to strengthen it just gets monotonous. Even the thieves guild is somehow a pillar of the establishment. The forces arrayed behind the heroes so utterly outclass their opposition in basically every case that it’s really hard to care about them on any sort of dramatic level, and I keep waiting for a reversal or betrayal that just isn’t occurring.

Anyway yeah, if you liked the previous 10 books you will probably like these ones as well! Would just recommend spacing them out so you don’t burn out.

I'm going to make them react to Dick's comics from start to finish, from his robin days to MAYBE Tom Taylor...well maybe not him because bleh. But I'll worry about that in the far future when i get around to him.

The reason I'm struggling so much with the fic is because Dick's story is extensive. There is soooo much I have to write about but the way the comics jump around constantly is crazy to keep track of. I'm collating the order in which to make them react.

Yup! Definitely going to include fight scenes! FIGHT SCENES ARE MY FAVORITE (action movies are my fav genre btw) so they'll definitely learn more about Dick's extraordinary expertise in all skills that the first writer in 82 years has been busy mucking up.

My information rants I'm going to write in character dialogue as observations but I'm going to stick to as canon characterization as possible. Like I'm not going to make a character say something they wouldn't say if they were in canon but the easy part about this is, everyone loves Dick. So I have a lot of freedom.

YES SHIPS!! Dick Grayson's harem of "everyone he's ever met because they all end up falling in love with him" will of course be the starring cast but explicitly, I'm only going to make them react to canon events so it'll still be fun. Just don't want to pass of fanon relationships as canon in this fic.

I've been busy on application type stuff so I've been severely slacking on writing fics but I'm going to hop to it soon.

Is there any modern isekai anime you think are actually worth watching? Or is it all just the same toxic wish fulfilment garbage at this point?

Fear not anon, there's actually some good modern isekai anime still! But first, some hearsay:

-While I didn't personally vibe with it, I've heard a lot of good things about Re:Zero, but I've also heard a lot of bad and cringe things about it, so it's up to you I guess

-Ascendance of a Bookworm is another I don't know anything about, but I've heard good things

Now for the ones I have actually watched:

-My next life as the villainess: all routes lead to doom! is a 2021 isekai where a teen girl dies and gets reborn into the world of her favorite dating sim, but she's in the body of Katarina, the awful rotten-hearted villainess, and to top it all off she's 7 years-old.

Katarina soon realizes that, if her new life progresses the same as the game's, all she's got to look forward to is banishment or death, because game!Katarina is a major bitch so nobody loves her, and she starts taking measures for her inevitable doom: she learns to farm so she'll be able to procure food is she's banished, tries her hand at magic and swordfighting so she'll be able to defend herself, and other stuff like that

She's also a naturally nice person to everybody in the game so all the boys and girls end up falling in love with her, which she completely doesn't notice because she's dead certain that the game has to go on the preplanned route so she has no idea everybody who's supposed to romance and/or befriend the game's protagonist wants to jump her bones instead.

It's a pretty fun series, and while it's no benchmark of storytelling, it does have a few genuinely good plot twists and heartwarming moments. I wish it would end up as a proper bisexual harem, but I knows the odds aren't good, sadly.

Also, if you do watch it, stick to the first season. The second season is bad. Like Bad bad. Makes you regret the time you spent watching it-Bad. There's a movie coming on December, which I hope is good and redeems the franchise, but if not, the first season is good

Saihate no Paladin/The Faraway Paladin is another 2021 isekai where a random dude gets reincarnated as a baby in the ruins where a great evil is sealed, and gets adopted by three undead: a skeleton warrior, a mummy priestess and a ghost wizard. They raise him, teach him to fight, magic and miracles, and then send him off to the world when he turns 15. It's a pretty decent story, it has a slow start, taking some 5 episode to properly set up the MC's circumstances and goals before his journey, and it's got a second season coming on October so if you wanna catch up, you'll get more content soon

My only problem with it is that it should be a fantasy anime. The isekai part is... I mean it's there, it seems like there will be something with the gods and the different cycles of reincarnation, but it could very easily have been a fantasy story and lose nothing. The main character having been a random japanese man before reincarnating doesn't really add anything, so idk if you wanna count it as an isekai or not

Tensei Shitara Ken Deshita is a 2022 isekai-that-should-have-been-a-fantasy where another random japanese dude is reincarnated into a magic sword. He immediately goes "welp, time to discard everything about my previous life and be the best sword I can" and begins slaughtering monsters to grind levels. He eventually becomes a super OP weapon and that's when he gets found by his future master, a preteen catgirl slave whose caravan is escaping from a two-headed zombie bear

The catgirl gets the sword and kills the bear, the sword uses his telekinetic powers to kill the slaver by snapping his neck 180° degrees, burns the slave contract and they team up. The sword restores the girl's name, Fran, which she had lost when she became a slave, and Fran names the sword "Teacher", and they set out to grind levels so that Fran may evolve - because she's a member of the Black Cat race, which is the only race in that world that can't evolve, which is why they're discriminated and sold as slaves, and Fran wants to prove her race can evolve after all

This one I have a love-hate relationship with. It does a lot of the shit I hate on other isekais, but it also does a lot of things I like. Yes, Fran is ridiculously OP with little effort thanks to being able to share Teacher's skills, and she breezes through most challenges effortlessly which is often anticlimactic as hell, but she's got an actual tangible goal and a personality so she's already more interesting than your average isekai MC. There's no romance and almost no fanservice, and when there is it's always with the adult women in the series, so that's another bullet dodged

But on the other hand, the slavery plot is introduced, and then dropped almost entirely except for a bunch of obviously evil people who all get punished, and meanwhile everybody else is super nice to Fran and nobody brings up the fact that hey, she was a legal slave until not too long ago and her race is still being enslaved and nobody's doing anything about it, ain't that fucked up? No? Nobody wanna say anything? Idk, it's a fun romp but it's also very power-fantasy-trash at the same time. It's got a second season confirmed in production, maybe that will do something with the slavery plot

The Magical Revolution of the Reincarnated Princess and the Genius Young Lady is a 2023 series that should really have a shorter name, my god. It's another should've-been-a-fantasy isekai and it's. Hmm. It's got some amazing first episodes, but then they tried to cram A LOT of plot into the rest and fucked it all up. A lot of stuff makes very little sense, character motivations are all out of whack, and you get the feeling that they really needed another cour, or at least 6 more episodes, to fit it all in properly

It's one of those series that you can see the potential it had, how great it could've been if it had been allowed, and it makes you kinda sad that you'll never see it unless you go to read the light novels. The reason for this rush is that the studio wanted to end the series on the end of the third light novel, which is where the main girl gets together with her girlfriend as a canon, explicit, openly gay couple, which is a deeply respectable, dare I even say admirable goal, but I still wish it had had more episodes so it hadn't had to sacrifice the rest of the series for it

The Executioner and her Way of Life is a 2022 series, the final pick of the list, and the one I like the most, so of course it's only got one season and no confirmed sequel because god hates me, personally

The main character, Menou, is a teenage priestess from her world's church, and she's also in charge of killing all the japanese people who get isekai'd into her world. Menou doesn't enjoy the killing and feels guilty for it, but she knows she must do it to stop the ridiculous powers the isekai'd are given from bringing ruin to her world. One such power is the one that turned her whole village, people and buildings alike, into ash when she was little. She was rescued and raised by Flare, the world's strongest warrior, whose power is only matched by her mental instability, which she gladly passed to her apprentice

The story proper begins when Menou meets Akari, the new japanese teenager in town, and finds out Akari's power prevents her from dying. Thus, Menou takes Akari on a trip across the continent to see the sights and find a weapon strong enough to kill her before Akari goes nuclear. Akari, meanwhile, is ecstatic, because she doesn't know Menou wants to kill her, and because she's down horrendous for her from the moment their eyes meet, loudly and openly fantasizing about the romantic adventures they'll have and telling her stuff like "you're the only one for me" to her face

As the series goes on, you start to notice there's something very, very wrong with Akari

Another such character is Momo, Menou's junior who is also loudly and openly in lesbians with her, very annoyed that Menou spends so much time with Akari, and also very off in the head. I hope you're seeing a pattern here

The final character in this delightful ensemble is Asuna, the princess of the realm and the most well adjusted character in the series. She's a wandering knight who loves a good fight and develops the most hilarious crush on Momo, who wants nothing to do with her and is constantly antagonizing Asuna, attacking her, ambushing her and throwing her into deadly traps, only for the princess to walk it off and offer to buy her a drink. It's honestly hilarious

And there you have it, my personal isekai reccommendation list. Hope you find at least one that suits your tastes

Home Room (Manga)

As of now, this manga has only five translated chapters, but I do think it has the potential to be a yandere story just based on what's going on. Supposedly, it does get a bit more weird as it goes on, but for now, we'll just do with what we have. Thanks for both Cherry and @lovesick-boys-club for showing me this manga. Lovesick-boys-club actually has a lot of good recommendations in not only manga but other things like TV-Shows when it comes to male yanderes.

The story starts out with the teacher Aida asking the student Sakurai to answer a question. Sakurai can't answer it, not because she doesn't know the answer, but because she's been glued to her chair as a prank. Aida ends up bringing her to the nurse's office, and we see that Sakurai actually has quite the crush on him. There is a flashback about Sakurai and her mother: two opposites, her a studious student and her mother who often worked away from home. One day, her mother didn't come back, only leaving her money for rent and food. At this time, Aida ends up coming to her house and that's when she fell in love. While Sakurai gets herself unstuck from her chair, Aida ends up trying to find the culprit in the class but to no avail. Sakurai is working at a restaurant being harassed by customers while Aida watches over her. We find that he was actually the one who glued Sakurai to the chair. The next couple of scenes involve Sakurai drinking a tea that helps her sleep deeply while Aida hides under her bed to watch her. The next day, Sakurai sees Aida hanging around with other students while she stands to the side. Aida finds the other students annoying, even seeing them as just "processed food" while he sees Sakurai as the "pure product". While walking home, Sakurai's friend worries about the bullying she receives, but Sakurai seems content as long as she has Aida to support her. Aida seems happy hearing this through his tracking device installed on his phone and prepares for tomorrow's bullying. The next day, Sakurai is in the library, while Aida gets interrupted by a student. He wishes dearly for the student to leave, but luckily his trap works and the students drag him into the library. He finds that his trap worked on the wrong person and we see why he has such a twisted outlook on life. His mother committed suicide when he was young, and he started to develop a hero complex. After learning about Sakurai, he plans all of these problems so he can save her.

The first thing that stood out to me is how much realistic this manga is compared to a lot of the ones I usually recommend. I actually gives me very heavy I Love You Kyoko-san vibes both in art style and in story. The way the yandere goes about actually getting Sakurai's attention is very different than what I normally see, which is to cause problems for her only for Aida to swoop in and save the day. He definitely has his creepy moments of spying on her through not only tracking devices but also hiding under her bed. He seems to plan out different things to make Sakurai's life worse, only for him to come in and save her. In this case, Sakurai seems to be okay with all of this bullying so as long as she's able to talk to Aida and even takes a lot of advice he gives, much to his satisfaction. Aida seems to have little interest in other students despite being pretty popular with everyone and only really cares about Sakurai. Cherry tells me that in future chapters it gets a bit weird where Sakurai actually seems to get a harem of some sort (?) but until then, I think this one is pretty interesting to read!

Eventually I cheated and opted for playing one SQ first, namely Wriothesley's (shame on me for not having it played sooner tbh) and I have to say that it was sublime.

✦ As always I adore Wrio's brilliant mind and his no chill attitude despite being actually cautious most of the time to set an example for the others in the Fortress. Sadly I don't have much more to say about this but it's self-explanatory enough and I reaffirm what I said some time ago that he's hands down one of my favorite characters of the entire cast of Genshin thus far.

✧ I love that each time the script of the stories is getting darker and that it masks better this Traveler harem syndrome that I abhor. Putting the latter aside, I loved the level of detail of how sickeningly manipulative Dougier is and how everything played out keeping me on my toes at all times.

✦ As it is customary to this blog, that black stone caught my attention and so did the thorn method and the Aqua Doloris. I might write a more thorough addendum or headcanon about this in the future once I have ruminated more on this concept. What I'm going to say is that I have no doubts that its substance stems from the Abyss as it is well-established by now that it heightens negative feelings and fear is one such feeling. The fact that it actually awakens bad memories give me some food for thinking, but it also makes me wonder something: if someone were to have a certain degree of expertise to isolate whatever negative feeling and the means to reach to it into a substance and be able to implant it into other people's brains, it could be other things that aren't solely fear. And things that aren't entirely negative in the eyes of others. If you haven't guessed where I'm going with this yet, I'll give you a small hint: Khaenri'ah.

✧ Lastly (but not least), what I've been awaiting for the whole quest to learn as I have already read bits and pieces about this before and been talked to about this: children trading in black market and Wriothesley's experience as both a victim and executioner of two despicable adults partaking into this. In a way it is nothing new to me as I still remember that the webtoon, placed just a few years before the beginning of Genshin's story (further back in time too if we count the flashbacks, but that isn't relevant to this), already mentioned that the Fatui are actively seeking kids to take to Snezhnaya and most likely be dumped into the House of Hearth and pretty much cultivate them to become Fatui.

I particularly like the placement of this shred of light about his own personal story, as going through everything else that was happening in the Fortress only to culminate into learning about that gives more sense to what exactly drove Wriothesley to take the actions he took and to act the way he did with Dougier (the mfer deserved even more, but it's a good thing that Wrio has plans and freedom to make the most of his punishments).

Now, as a more portrayal-oriented thing and how Dain would view this... it is very rare to find characters that in one way or another he can see himself reflected on to some degree, but I can say positively that Wriothesley just joined the small gang. As for what Dain would see himself reflected exactly, that is Wrio's drive to fight for others' freedom. Just as he did for his "family" back then, and just as he did for the Fortress of Meropide in his particular SQ and will continue to do in order to ensure that his new family has a chance for rebirth. Dain would find great respect in this, as someone who is on the same boat himself no matter if in a greater scale, in his pursuit for humanity's freedom from the looming danger the Abyss Order will suppose for them as part of their revenge and obsessions, but also freedom from the ugly schemes of the higher gods above the Archons that still remain unknown, but looking into the Vision's workings alone there is something highly suspicious to me that I can't shake off.

Not at all, I actually think Nene is the most utterly normal straight girl LOL. She likes otome games where you are a protag dating a dozen cute boys or whatever, and in her fantasies, all boys are pointed at her and oggling her … she is just into a harem fantasy. It's all about how hot and impressive she is--!! In a way the boys in the harem interacting is like… too complicated, for early manga Nene? It's such a straightforward want to be desirable …

She has a more 'realistic' kind of fantasy outside of that, which she actively works towards-- where she alters her hobbies and vocations to appease a boy (and those vocations are things like learning to cook, sew, garden…)… and she ah, does deep down, understand she isn't conventionally desirable (TT__TT) so she has a submissive kind of brutal realist fantasy of, toiling or proving herself loyal to a boy through ah, subservience … (oh Nene-chan….)

I don't even think she… perceives … much between two boys, naturally, in the way a lot of people don't jump to that kind of assumption-- like, I don't think Nene perceives the layers between Mitsuba and Kou as romantic at all, thus far, in the story? Just that Mitsuba is a friend Kou wants badly to help. (Kou being interested in her romantically would make it confusing to parse, really)

If Nene liked BL, that would be funny for Hanako to observe and psychoanalyze (I assume the typical narrative of the ~delusional degraded girl left to rot into a fujoshi would just occur to him naturally, like damn girl, you've been alone for too long; your fantasies have become too convoluted lol), but instead he's only here to comment on and observe her thirsty fantasies where 10 guys line up for her, hahaha. He sees THAT and goes, pervert, lol…. dirty thought haver... lol...

In reality I think of her gradual observing of the Yugi twins and, wishing for them to resolve what is going on between them, as something she earnestly wants for them both-- ehr, platonically, initially, you know, just normally … their story is sad, and, they are brothers, they were important to one another, Hanako feels seemingly guilt and misery about the murder, so… Nene's likely-future-interest in them healing their bond, is as straightforward and sincere as Neige wanting to heal the Ambrose twins broken relationship in AidaIro's Snow White. It'll just become so obvious and apparent both parties are still loving and wanting the other. Hanako is so ah, avoidant, and Tsukasa so mysterious, that we're softly chipping away at Nene realizing, "Tsukasa is precious to Hanako".

Neige, in Snow White, observes the brother's sad pining for the other, and becomes straight up frustrated and yells at them about it, like, "NEITHER OF YOU HATE EACH OTHER, YOU BOTH WANT THE SAME THINGS, SO WHY IS IT LIKE THIS???" and she doesn't need any kind of interest in BL, you know? It's a sincere story, at first………

But actually that is why it's captivating to think of her organically… understanding, parsing, that there is, "more" going on under the surface…?

"Tsukasa is precious to Hanako" is step 1, not the final conclusion. And I also think that's the… point, of her and Hanako forming a romance, and all of this parallel between how avoidant and fussy he is towards Nene, and how avoidant and fussy he can be towards Tsukasa. I think, once Nene can truly understand, "Hanako loves me, but, he refuses to let himself have things he loves, because he is afraid, for some reason", she could see how he creates the same obscurity and distance between himself and Tsukasa. Hanako cannot say "I love you" directly to either of them … by having a romance with Hanako, she can directly experience the same foibles as Tsukasa.

Nene is really… interested in Hanako's emotions, fundamentally, she wants to 'know' him. She is trying to solve his behavior… her most spellbound moments are, when Hanako is distressed, upset, finally dropping his facade. I suppose I think it could gradually become apparent to her, or else, apparent all at once, that Hanako was in love with his brother, and, he doesn't know what to do about that, and, he's running from it, just like he runs from Nene over and over. Hanako never wants to confront anything. He doesn't want to talk about what Tsukasa makes him feel, or what happened between them, or why he did what he did (and does Hanako even fully understand?).

I think if you fed Nene information point blank early manga like, "hey, this guy who sexually harasses you is also a brocon", that wouldn't really be anything to her, not exciting or captivating on its own-- its not 'that kind of interest' in and of itself. But at this point, the mystique and secrets of Hanako are so DEEP and INSCRUTABLE, that she'd be grateful for any information. And at this point, "Hanako was in love with his twin brother" would would be more like, "ah… so thats why he wouldn't tell me anything, and that's why he's so secretive about him. That's a good reason. It must be confusing, even for him, to understand why he does anything, or what he wants with his brother." Literally anyone would keep that secret buried eternally.

After so long in the dark with Hanako, it'd be like a… relief, to, understand why the secrecy. Thus far, Nene has thought something like, "why doesn't he trust me?" or, "what is he so afraid of me finding out? What could be so bad, when he's already a murderer, and I already accept that? When I already accept him trying to have Aoi killed, or trying to trap me?" At that point, it's like, oh. Naruhodo. Also, of course he, can't, talk about it, he can't even talk about his FEELINGS FOR NENE, a NORMAL GIRL AND PERSON TO LIKE. Its like… I don't think considering the Yugi for Nene, is like, "hot" or "sexy" on first blush, it's more like…………….. ok, I get it, that would, cause problems, in one's life, and be difficult to cope with, and, ever talk about ………………………… its kind of not her fault then that he won't say anything, lol.

It's not like, "hot because it is two boys", it's not as if Nene has an established interest in that whatsoever-- though she has uh, an established "omg" its like its exotic to her or something, www...

tsuchigomori confirmed for homophobic -- it's, uh, alluring because of Hanako's intoxicating complexity and depth, and, well, she's a romantic… I think the romanticism of being born together and sharing every day, and then Tsukasa sacrificing himself to save his brother, and then Hanako's sacred belonging becoming his twin, to eternally protect, is, ehr, something that begs reverence and understanding by nature.

Though, I mean. Nene loves the fantasy of multiple guys (: so... (: I think twins is a very 'happy ending' for Nene-chan ... and I think relating to Tsukasa and being so similar to him, would make her feel more secure in how and why Hanako loves her... (: and I think, getting to eventually spectate the twins earnest love, would become.....................sexy.

Its like a corruption arc in a way. This innocent straight girl who wants a normal relationship with a guy is going to be swept into this crazy twin love story. And she is gonna. LIKE IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

When Percy was still very young, he befriended 3 grandmas. The Fates helped Sally get rid of Gabe, told him about gods and future wars, and basically moved in with them. Since they cared for Percy a great deal, the Fates decided to grant him a boon; anyone who would be dating in future would be guaranteed to survive the upcoming wars. Cue to Percy ending up in Camp and trying to date as many campers as possible to ensure their survival. Only to accidentally fall in love with all of them.

It all started with Nico.

Well... It all started with him befriending three really weird grandmas, who looked like they could and would tear his eyes out of their sockets if he looked at them in a wrong way, but he decided he would rather be there with them on the sidewalk and learn how to knit socks than to be home where Gabe drunk and gambled away all of their money. But, to make the whole story easier, let's just go with that it all started with Nico.

Nico, the previously adorable and hyper little puppy, who just lost his sister because Percy didn't take the whole war seriously enough. Who wanted to run away because he lost everything, and because he hated Percy and the camp and their side eyed looks at his strange powers. So, Percy did the only logical thing he could do: he asked Nico to be his boyfriend.

Nico was his first one.

But not the last; not even close.

Michael Yew was his second. It happened once again, even after he swore he wouldn't let somebody's sibling to die, Lee Fletcher died. Logically, he knew the Apollo cabin's head's death wasn't because of him, he wasn't there to save him, but on the other hand, it really was his own fault. He knew, after all, that those he was is a relationship with, would survive the war.

So yes, Lee Fletcher's death was on him. Obviously, the next logical step was to ask Michael out.

It was kind of awkward at first. Him, being in a relationship with not one, but two people, both of them guys, but he didn't let himself to rethink his decisions. Not even when he started to collect boyfriends and girlfriends left and right, like other people collected stamps or postcards.

A Beckendorf here, an Ethan there, a Silena over there. It was weird, but when the other campers realized that first Beckendorf, then Iris, a daughter of Apollo, survived an obviously fatal accident, it was not a surprise anymore that Percy Jackson had a harem. (It didn't hurt that he was fucking delicious and an overall amazing person either.)

The problems started, when Percy fell for his partners. He could be in a relationship without being in love with the person, and the boon would still work on the person, but he was Percy Jackson, of course he would fall in love with each and every one of his partners.

How could he not?! The other demigods were amazing, and unique! Before he started to collect them, he wasn't big fan of socializing, he didn't even have time to get to know many of his fellow demigods. But after he started to asking out the others, he got into the habit of going out on a real date with the person he asked out, and since most of the dates turned out really great, he just... He started to spend a lot of time with them. In groups, in pairs, the whole camp together...

And he fell in love.

He loved Silena's gentle smile, Travis' sparking eyes, Michael's snarky comments. He adored Clarisse's buff arms, Jake's silly jokes, and Ethan's silent support. He could compose sonnets about Nico's cute little curls, Rachel's fiery temper and...

Well.

Luke's thick scar.

He loved all of them.

And that was what saved everybody. Kronos and his monsters had no chance to win when on the other side it was Percy Jackson and his overwhelming love towards even to those demigods who were on the opposing sides.

I started to ship them after reading that vignette, too!

Their dynamic is honestly such a wholesome one.  Let me just preface this by saying that relationships don’t necessarily have to be formed off of mutual growth, but I’m a firm believer that it makes for more interesting content when they do.  All of the Twisted Wonderland boys, pre-Yuu, have been lacking something in their lives.  In Idia’s case, this is confidence (among other things, but that’s some Episode/Book 6 content I shouldn’t get into now), whereas Silver’s needs are more along the lines of being able to relax and find a reason to live outside of his family and duty.  Luckily for Idia, Silver’s ability to see the good in everyone and his blunt sincerity, while embarrassing at times, is the encouragement he’s been missing; he does, naturally, have Ortho as one of his staunch supporters as well, but words often feel more meaningful coming from an outside party.  Meanwhile, hanging out with Idia can teach Silver so much about what it feels like to just be a normal kid, free of his more formal duties and obligations.  Expanding his social circles beyond just that of Diasomnia allows him to explore a less serious side of himself that he wouldn’t discover otherwise.  Of course, there’s also the possibility for lots of one-sided pining within their relationship—but I won’t talk about my angsty tastes this time...

Idia’s flustered reactions to Silver are always so cute to see.  He actually voluntarily approaches his underclassman in the aforementioned vignette, drawn in by his beauty... which is just so indicative of more than just platonic feelings???  Personally, I’d love to see more of him like this, as it would really underline the changes being around Silver has brought.  And concerning confessions, I think it would be the final nail in his coffin of development if he actually makes the first move.  I’m also partial to seeing more male-lead-Silver wooing Idia unintentionally like it’s second nature—either way, the scene would be amazing, but playing around with typical dynamics is a particular hobby of mine.

Speaking of hobbies... I think that both before and after the start of their relationship, Idia and Silver have a weekly ritual of going to Idia’s dorm room to play video games and read manga.  This routine initially begins as a request from Silver to learn more about what’s popular among his peers, as per Lilia’s instructions.  Idia, while wary at first, quickly warms to him, excited to finally have an irl friend to share his hobbies with.  To his surprise, Silver isn’t half-bad.  However, there’s still room for improvement; that’s the sole reason behind why he offers to see him for future practice sessions—for the training and only the training, of course.  Eventually, after Silver crashes for the umpteenth time in his bed during a late match, they make arrangements for sleepovers instead.

At some point in time, once they’re officially dating, Silver asks if he can bring his fa—Lilia-senpai, to one of their little hang outs, to which Idia reluctantly agrees.  He still doesn’t exactly know what to make of the mysterious vice dorm leader, but it seems important to his boyfriend, so there’s really no other option but to say yes—unbeknownst to him, this is Silver’s way of slowly introducing him to his family.  Once again, he is utterly shocked by the level of skill demonstrated by an unlikely candidate.  Later, he’ll ask Silver if everyone in Diasomnia is some sort of closet gaming addict, but in the meantime, he finds himself actually bonding with Lilia, much to Silver’s delight.  As they fall into an easy banter, Idia can’t help but marvel at the strange air of familiarity about his fellow classmate...

I think that Silver’s interactions with Ortho would also be something interesting to explore.  They aren’t exactly close friends or anything like that, but he treats Idia’s younger brother with the same kindness and respect as he does anyone else, resulting in a shared fondness between the two.  Even before Idia introduces him to Ortho as his boyfriend, Silver has become his favorite of Idia’s friends, thanks to how happy he makes his brother.  Sebek, on the other hand, is less than thrilled to hear that his psuedo-older-brother is involved with such a strange and weak human.  Still, Idia’s appearance around Diasomnia has become more common as of late and off Silver’s subtle glares, he shifts the topic from one of chastisement to one of praise for Malleus’ actions that day.  Needless to say, most of their time in Silver’s dorm is spent in his room as well.

Once Idia becomes more comfortable around the Diasomnia crew, I think that it’s highly likely that he becomes their resident IT department.  Seeing as Briar Valley is a region with barely any modern advancements, it’s up to him to educate Silver (and, by extension, his family) on not just otaku culture but also technology in general.  Though it’s a slow and painful process to teach Malleus the wonders of Google and get Sebek to stop shouting whenever he’s on speakerphone, it’s somehow all worth it when he sees Silver smile.

—Alright, it’s AU time now.  I’ve been thinking about a post graduation AU recently, in which Idia has inherited his family’s business and essentially hasn’t seen the light of day for six years... this time not by choice.  When he’s finally permitted a short break from the daunting workload, his first course of action is to visit the boy who’s been on his mind ever since graduation.  However, the world as he knows it has changed drastically, and Silver is no longer the kind underclassman he once loved.  Instead, his cold exterior has seemingly permeated his very being after half a decade of facing the reality of what it means to officially serve as a human in Malleus’ court.  As Idia regrettably finds, who they used to be and the connection they used to share has been broken beyond repair, but when a sudden spike in the number of Overblots across Briar Valley comes to the pair’s attention, they’re thrust into a sinister mystery with betrayal at every turn...

Another AU idea that just won’t leave my mind is a Greek mythology one.  Unfortunately, I can’t take credit for coming up with it, but it’s just too genius not to share—I’d highly encourage finding the work I’m talking about under the Idia/Silver tag on AO3 (unfortunately, they haven’t actually written their part yet, but the other pairings are really interesting to read as well).  Anyway, in the fic, the author reimagines Hades and Persephone as our two favorite boys, which I think suits them to a T.  And with Lilia as Demeter... the canon character dynamics are preserved shockingly well, with some (prospective) drama to spice things up.  Some time in the future, I’d love to try drawing all of them in Greek garbs...!

Okay, and because Idia’s such a massive otaku, I have to include this one—an isekai AU with Idia as the typical reincarnated office worker who finds himself in the world of one of his favorite games.  As an NPC fated to die in the very beginning, he latches onto the game’s protagonist, Silver, a knight blessed with the special holy power necessary to defeat the Dark Lord who’s overtaken his homeland.  The final boss is also, coincidentally, Silver’s father.  At first, Idia’s only hanging around him to avoid the most major death flags, after which he’ll dip before the ultimate battle, but fate has other plans for him.  In a massively cliche plot twist, he needs to stick around the hero to survive.  Thus begins the adventures of Sir Silver and his reluctant sidekick, Idia the Fearful...

Sorry it took me a little longer to reply than usual, but I hope this satisfied your Idia x Silver craving!  Though this isn’t actually my favorite Silver ship, it’s still definitely up there on my list and quite frankly has the most canon content to backing it.  Let’s pray to the Great Seven for more of then in Episode/Book 7 and future events...!

Spoilers for Magnificent Century episode 52

...Is Mihrimah going to grow up a brat. Big oof if so.

The first time we saw hints of there being differences between Hurrem and Mihrimah is when Mahidevran complimented Mihrimah and Mihrimah took it very well. Not that there was anything else Mihrimah could have done in that situation other than thank Mahidevran for her compliment, but I think Hurrem was displeased by how Mihrimah relished in the compliment even when she would have known that Hurrem hated Mahidevran.

In this episode 52, Mihrimah was playing with Hurrem's crown and broke it. She then blamed it first on the concubine and then on Mehmet. Not that kids lying to deflect blame is unusual, but I think it was supposed to set up Mehmet and Mihrimah's personalities. Mehmet wanted Mihrimah to do the right thing; as a prince and future sovereign, it's important that he knows what's right in the grand scheme of things. On the other hand, Mihrimah, like many women in the palace, have to learn to scheme, but I think what's special here is that she is beginning to scheme and lie against her own family (Hurrem, Mehmet, and the rest of her brothers). Mihrimah asked her mother to forgive the concubine that was dismissed; I wonder if Mihrimah will use that to threaten the concubine as well, showing her that Mihrimah has that much power over her.

Mihrimah has a crush on Bali Bey and she caught Bali Bey and Aybige talking intimately in the garden. Mihrimah also tattled on Aybige in front of all of the important women, unknowing of why it might have been dangerous. That being said, again, she is still a child and I don't think she knew the bigger ramifications of what should said. Everybody just took it as a joke because they knew that Mihrimah had a crush on Bali Bey, but I think the others might suspect that there is some truth to it, considering Aybige was so unwilling to the marriage at first. Mihrimah told Aybige that she would watch her; again it's just a kid's jealousy but it may fracture things between Hurrem and Aybige if it gets further. Aybige was one of Hurrem's already few high profile allies.

There is one thing that has been mildly surprising to me so far in this show, and it's the fact that Hurrem hasn't really suffered any huge falls from grace yet. Again if I'm going to compare Magnificent Century's story arcs to Zhen Huan's story arcs, Zhen Huan's fall from favour happened fairly early on and was important to her development as that was when she began to be more careful and purposeful about the scheming.

In this episode, Mustafa confronted Hurrem for intimidating his mother and he put her in her place. That was probably the first time Hurrem was truly outdone, as in that moment she could not fall back on having the Sultan's love, because Mustafa has status in a way that Hurrem never could (being a son of the Sultan). Nothing Mustafa said was untrue.

When it came to the political side of things (as opposed to the harem side), Hurrem didn't have any allies. Mahidevran had Ibrahim, but Ibrahim was Hurrem's mortal enemy. And now that Mustafa was grown, he was a political enemy as well (all princes are political figures as possible heirs to the throne). So whenever Hurrem got in trouble on the political side of things, the only way she could really ever support herself was to tattle to Suleyman.

However, this time, Suleyman sided with Mustafa and made Hurrem apologize to Mustafa. I would say that perhaps this is her first fall from grace, but I would still hardly call having to make an apology anything huge. The episode ends before she does apologize, but I think that she will, but then grow very hateful of Mustafa.

My prediction is that Hurrem will continue to not really have any allies on the political side, not until Mehmet grows up and finally starts getting his hand in politics.

A pet peeve of mine is how Gulsah, despite having been moved to be Valide Sultan's attendant, has basically retained her spot behind Mahidevran. I know the point is that Mahidevran and Valide are on the same side so Gulsah serving Valide is basically the same as her serving Mahidevran, but I would have liked some differences in the actual administrative side of things.

Ibrahim finally admitted that he was in love with Nigar and not with Hatice anymore, and it's basically in line with what I'd thought. Ibrahim became tired of the fact that Hatice was his sovereign. He was walking on eggshells around her, but he said that the breaking point for him was when she accused him of hiding a lover (when he was hiding Isabella at the hunting lodge). When he said that it was a matter of state affairs, Hatice said that she was of the state so he was politically accountable to her as well. Which enforced the idea that their relationship was not one of love but one of politics.

On the other hand, Nigar is so loyal to Ibrahim, still being madly in love with him even when he was so mean to her. Of course Ibrahim feels at ease around her.

Hatice's breakdown was oof. When Hatice thought that Ibrahim was dead, her breakdown was similar to that of Beyhan's. But now we have more background to this relationship. We saw how Hatice and Ibrahim were deeply in love. And then over time we saw how their relationship of love slowly deteriorated. For Hatice, my guess is that because she was a princess and a royal, she grew up getting her own way, and when something doesn't go her way, she's extremely frazzled by it. So any unfavourable events in her life bring about huge reactions from her, which is starting to tire out Ibrahim. When Hatice pleaded for him not to stay, he didn't even bother to soothe her.

Hilarious how I'm on episode 52 and I'm not even half way through this show lol. The episodes are so long and the show is so long X'D

I wanted to wait until the finale aired to answer this, and also I’m screenshotting so I can avoid the search, and I’m only tagging this with my tumblr savior tags so anon can see this even if they have the jt ship tag blocked. Also, I am a multishipper, I ship bh and jt and bjt and bt, and my desires for canon are based more on what I think works within the story we currently have as well as what treats Tabitha well and avoids racist tropes.

Now then, I do think bhva have a chance of coming back because I don’t think anything is set on this show until the last episode is over, and there are a number of ways this could play out for each pair.

Let’s talk ba first, because how ba goes is tied to va and bh in some capacity

1.) The ba engagement is an indication of endgame and s7 will be Riverdale playing with ba and va, likely with ba as first love but in some way tangled up with va.

2.) The above is true, but the “tangled up with va” leads to an ot3 and not ba alone.

3.) Someone on twitter said that no couple that gets engaged in the penultimate season ends up together, and I think that’s a fair point, although idk if I’ve watched enough live action American tv shows to say one way or the other. In this situation, ba don’t end up together, and however they play with ba and va ends in va, Betty/Veronica, or some other combo of the characters being single and in various relationships (Betty/Reggie, anyone?).  In this scenario, I would especially keep an eye on the possibility of Betty/Veronica.

Now let’s talk jt and bh, and keep in mind that Jughead remembers his previous life and Tabitha is somewhere that creates an “echo” of the fact that she wasn’t in the high school seasons

A.) Jughead’s feelings for Tabitha and the vision of their future together are either the primary or two of the primary drives for Jughead to find her and/or a way home to regular Riverdale, and yadda yadda yadda they end up together. This is compatible with scenarios 1, 2, and 3.

B.) The vision of Jughead and Tabitha’s future together is more of a goodbye to the ship in the narrative than something to fight for.  The ba/va stuff is happening ala scenario 3, and also Jughead and Betty investigate or whatever and fall in love again.  I have no idea what happens to Tabitha or Jughead’s feelings for Tabitha here.

Any combo of 1-3 & A and 3 & B is possible, and I’m not confident enough in my ability to predict Riverdale to say one way or the other.  Like, I think the only things I’ve gotten right are “Jughead and Tabitha will definitely date at some point in s5 for an unknown period of time” (made after 5x11 aired), “Jughead and Tabitha will still be romantically tied at the end of s6” (made after 6x12 aired), and “Jughead will get his hearing back before s6 ends” (made after we learned he would have hearing loss).  And, like, getting only three predictions right over four and a half seasons, one of which is based only on lack of confidence in the writers more than the actual writing, is a pretty bad track record, and you’ll notice that the two that aren’t based on writer incompetence/fuckery were made halfway through the season.  I’ll probably have a more confident answer for you then, but that’s at least like nine or ten months from now, and even then I doubt I’ll be *certain* because certainty and I don’t often exist in the same space.

I will say, though, that I’m not quite sure how people experiencing being teenagers again but with possibly tweaked backstories and having relationships there will affect their decisions as adults with their original backstories–because I assume we’re going back to the real world in the end, although I could be wrong there because of my less-than-stellar track record. I’m rooting for a change in the ba/va situation though, except for the ot3 option, I can’t handle that in a ship that has such harem anime vibes, like I can’t do it, I’m not strong enough, it repels me.

Anyway, I think scenario B is less likely than A, just because Jughead *does* remember his relationship with Tabitha and the future he saw, and it would be weird and kind of dickish for him to just give up on her and it and move on to his ex who currently thinks she’s a teenager, especially if it’s while he’s fighting to get back to regular Riverdale.  Bh would have a *much* better chance if Jughead didn’t have his memory either.  But Betty does have that James Dean poster, who is more visually similar to Jughead than Archie, and they do have *so much* history, so I’m not going to count them out.

But also I don’t see a way to have Jughead move on from his feelings for Tabitha and instead fall for a version of Betty without making him look like an asshole, unless he’s given up on both finding her in this time *and* getting home to her after like at least a year of trying, which, if you’re gonna do that, why have him remember in the first place?  And also, Betty thinks she’s a teen and is presumably different from real life Betty, both adult and teen, while Jughead is the same and thinks he’s an adult, and I just think that romance would be weird; like, it wouldn’t be inappropriate or gross, I’m not saying that, but I do think it would be, like, a weird thing for Jughead to do. Anyway, I especially don’t see a good way of doing this without it being deeply unfair to Tabitha outside of killing her, and RAS has indicated that she will still be in the show, so that’s off the table.  In my opinion, it’s important to ensure that Tabitha is treated fairly, just as it’s important to make sure that Veronica is treated fairly and not just given the bullshit racist “yeah, she wants love, but she should just be a #girlboss who doesn’t need a man!” ending and just as it’s important for Betty to not succumb to suburbia and/or even slightly turn into either of her parents (unless we’re going for a Bad End, but that would be extremely depressing).  But, like, right now they’re doing the opposite of both of the latter, so who knows about the former.

If I *have* to make a guess based on the information we have now, I’ll guess Cheryl/Toni, Kevin/Moose, and to a lesser extent Jughead/Tabitha endgame, but I am still unable to guess what would happen with ba/va, but I do assume that there will be at least bait/crumbs for bh in a few episodes.  But the only one I’m 99.999% certain of is Cheryl/Toni because of the whole fated soulmates across time thing, although I’m at like 70% on Kevin/Moose just because RAS seems to truly love that one and has loved it since day 1.  Jughead/Tabitha is at, like, 35-45% confidence tops

Now I’m gonna throw this over to @elegant-force for her thoughts, printed here because it’s easiest, because she’s less biased than I am:

So, frankly, I’m not super confident in my predictions here. Just going to start off with that. I used to think I understood the general character of the writers’ room for Riverdale, but that hasn’t been true since about Season 4. I don’t have much insight into how their decision-making process works at this point or what values/ideals/principles they have as guiding lights for the show/narratives/characterizations. 

I used to think that the show was purposefully really thoughtful about picking relationships and committing to them so that it could save time for the plot and for other characterization arcs, rather than wasting time on predictable garbage you could find on any tired daytime soap opera. But that’s definitely not what we’re doing at this stage. 

Frankly, my opinion is that the writers saw that fans were invested in the ships, and decided that because of this, messing with them would be an easier way to keep fans “on the hook” than writing a story that people actually could engage with. Instead of caring about the crafting of good relationships or interesting narratives, they seem to have become about “The bas vs. The bhs” or “The vas vs. the bas” or the “How are the Cheryl/Tonis going to feel about X?” 

And I think it’s all incredibly manipulative and, frankly, outrageously sexist. I’ve never seen a show or other work of media purposefully play with and manipulate (both in the narrative and on social media) something that fans were so invested in regarding a work that was targeted primarily at men. I’ve never seen Marvel be like “Maybe next time we’ll decide that Captain America has laser vision and Iron Man is a sorcerer… not like just for a fun lark, but like for real, this is who they are now in the comics, forget all of the time you spent learning about and talking about their powers with other nerds” because if they did that sort of shit, people would be really mad at them and feel like their narrative expectations were betrayed. And it just feels disrespectful to fans to do that sort of thing. But for some reason, when it’s women and the things that they are invested in are relationships you’ve put work into over the course of the show, blowing them up with little to no explanation and using them to manipulate viewership is just normal. 

And I’m sort of annoyed that everyone is buying into it to this degree. It frankly seems like every fucking comment from the writers about a ship is meant to be a tease to keep us on the hook and it’s fucking rude. It’s been a huge turn-off for me in terms of investment because the manipulation is so obvious and sloppy.

But you asked for my predictions and here they are. 

I’ve listed some of the current couples that were asked about as well as some other options I think are likely: 

1.) Betty/Archie

So, I have to wonder why, if we wanted to do this as endgame, we were going to have another season of messing around with the triangle stuff. We got here, they were going to get married, then we all got hit with the Retcomet. Essentially, our relationships were retconned, so either this is about us fighting our way back to our “perfect endings” or we’re going to redo some stuff. 

I don’t think that Betty had a perfect ending to fight her way back to. I think the only person in that category is Jughead (and notably, he remembers his old future). She basically had decided that the job she’d wanted her entire life wasn’t worth it and that she just wanted to be a wife or whatever after graduating top of her class at Yale. It doesn’t make a ton of sense to me that she’d throw everything she’d worked for her entire life in the garbage and that the audience was supposed to think that was good.

I also think that Polly having to wash her “sins” off of her rather than her accepting herself and being loved for who she is darkness included was so fucking gross. Like Betty needed to accept herself and also feel as if Archie accepted her without her former cultist sister doing some weird fake religious bullshit on her to trick her into doing it (this is so what happened, just because Polly was dead for a little bit doesn’t mean she can purify people, she was pulling old cultist tricks out of her pocket and we all know it). Betty only saw herself as a threat because she thought she was one. Polly tricked her out of it. Simple as that.

I honestly think we may come to find out that the reason Jughead remembers and the others don’t is that on some level, the others wanted to forget because they were unhappy with where they were. If Cheryl using the combined powers of all of the others really did, as Jughead implies, send them back due to some sort of manifestation of their wills, then it makes sense to me that part of what Veronica may have absorbed was their collective discontent with their situations and this reset is all of them trying to go back and change the things they did wrong. Especially if this is the case, I don’t see a lot of hope for Betty/Archie endgame. Even if that’s not the reason Jughead remembers when no one else does (if it’s just his writer powers or whatever), I still think resetting and then doing the thing we’re doing now with them doesn’t make a lot of sense. I think it’s possible that we go back and forth and eventually land on this if the bas scream loud enough online, though. I do think online screaming is the main thing determining what the show does. 

Probability: 10-20% 

2.) Betty/Veronica 

This is what I think is the best narrative option if we want to really wipe the slate clean with whatever is happening in S7 1955 land. I think that if the show really doesn’t want to play the traditional Betty/Archie/Veronica love triangle, they can lean into Betty and Veronica’s relationship and build that up. We’ve already introduced the concept of Betty being bisexual with her relationship with Agent Drake and we also had Cheryl and Veronica’s super hot (and very long) kiss at the end of S6. So, I think if we really wanted to go this way, we could. 

I think it’s a great answer to them both wanting to be in a relationship with someone they love and care about and know. And I also think, at this point, Archie is irredeemably awful.  He asked his ex that he broke up with less than a year ago to help him pick a ring for his new girlfriend. He sucks. He just fucking sucks. It’s gross beyond my ability to describe. 

But on that point, Veronica has shown true and unconditional love for Betty. She’s never held the cheating against Betty. When Archie asked her for a ring, she already had one that she thought would be perfect for Betty. She has been there for Betty whenever Betty has needed her. And while, prior to S6, Betty hadn’t always reciprocated, I think that her coming up with the idea for Veronica to kiss Archie and letting her do that was proof that Betty is also willing to take risks and make sacrifices for Veronica as well. I don’t think it was easy for her to do that, because she’s always been insecure about Archie and Veronica, but she did it because she loves Veronica enough to overcome those insecurities. I can’t say that about her feelings for Archie, or maybe even the feelings she had for Jughead. I think that Veronica has done more to help Betty deal with and overcome her insecurities than anyone else in the show. I wish that we could see Betty support and help Veronica more, and I really hope that regardless of what the show decides to do, we do more of that in the final season. 

Probability: 10-20% 

I don’t think that we’re going to do this, just because the show really seems to think that Archie is a good person who deserves love. I disagree with this, but I’m not in the writers’ room. I think he should end up single and alone due to his inability to treat women with any sort of respect. But that’s just me. I think that if the show still cares about crafting a good narrative or things having any sort of thematic resonance or meaning, this is what they’ll do. But I just don’t think it’s likely. 

3.) Betty/Archie/Veronica 

I like this option way less, but I think it’s fairly likely. It’s another reason we could have set up Betty and Veronica being bi, and I think it’s what the show would like to do. And the reason I think it’s what the show would like to do is that the writers, like Archie, can’t choose between Betty/Archie and Veronica/Archie. And I think the writers can’t choose because they have gotten so into playing with the shippers that they can no longer think of a way to make a satisfying ending where Archie ends up with one of these women. 

So, what’s the best solution? To not have to choose, of course. And then they get “points” for being “daring” and “innovative” to have a thruple as the main relationship in their show. They’ll think it will make the fewest people upset and that it will get them a lot of social media attention. And I think that’s honestly all they want: attention that isn’t mostly negative. Maybe that’s deeply cynical of me, but it’s the main common factor I’ve seen in their decision making at this point. 

I do think this could be done well, but I don’t think they will do it that way. I think it really only works if the triangle changes to be a full love triangle (ie: with each person being attracted to both other people in the triangle) and if the thruple puts Veronica mostly in the center. I think we still have to spend most of the season focused on the relationship between Betty and Veronica. I think we also have to embrace the part of Betty that seems to really not want a traditional family or maternal role, but maybe just wants to live with people she is comfortable with and attracted to that she can have sex with. I think that if the end dynamic has househusband/primary caregiver Archie taking care of kids that he and Veronica had together and Betty is part of it but doesn’t have to engage with the domestic things she dislikes, that’s fine. 

What isn’t okay is for this to become an Archie-centric triangle that functions as a mini-harem for him. It can’t just be Archie now sleeps with two women and sometimes watches them have sex because he’s just such a great guy he deserved this because for a white guy not choosing means eventually getting everything you want. That’s fucking gross, but I’m afraid they’ll be careless about it and that’s what will happen. 

Probability: 30-40% 

4.) Veronica/Archie

I think this is slightly more likely than Betty/Archie if Jughead has kept his memories because he’s the only one who doesn’t have regrets. I think it’s possible that Archie still wants to be with Veronica and we know Veronica still wants to be with Archie. She’s only not going for it because she loves Betty more than she wants to be with Archie. I think that in a reset where it’s clear Betty has another path to happiness, Veronica/Archie has a chance. 

Probability: 30-40% 

5.) Betty/Jughead

Honestly, I think this really hinges on why Jughead kept his memories. If it’s because he doesn’t have regrets and wants to get back to the future he saw with Tabitha, then there’s no way that bh is going to happen. I think, at best, what bh gets in this setting is a chance to end cleanly and in a way that both of them move on from that’s healthy. And, frankly, I think there could be a lot of good in that. I think the writers could give this ship the respect it deserves and acknowledge what it meant to both Betty and Jughead, without them having to get back together. I think we could have them date briefly or just spend time together as friends and acknowledge what could have been in a way that isn’t just shitting all over this pairing and/or teasing it with no real hope of follow-through just to keep the shippers on the hook. And I think that would be really nice. 

I think that if Jughead kept his memories as a fluke/due to his writer powers, then I guess we could go back to bh. I think you really have to come up with a good reason that we’re not going to have him try to get back to Tabitha though. Also, I think that the writers know if they throw his relationship with Tabitha in the garbage at this point, it’s just super fucking racist. And they don’t want people to accuse them of being racist on the internet (especially when the accusations are credible), so they probably won’t do it. 

Probability: 10-20%  

(If Jughead didn’t have his memories, I would have put the odds of this ship at 60-80%, frankly. If he didn’t remember Tabitha, I would have seen the time-compressed date as a good final send-off for Jughead/Tabitha, proof that they could have had a beautiful life together but we weren’t able to do that because of the comet coming and tearing us apart and destroying all of the memories that we built together. It would have been sort of rude to Tabitha, but I would have definitely accepted it as a perfectly good ending for the ship and felt like it was done justice. But I just can’t see a good reason for Jughead to keep his memories if the point isn’t for him to try to get back to Tabitha somehow.)

6.) Jughead/Tabitha 

We really invested in them over the last few seasons. I think that if we wanted to break them up, we would have just had Jughead lose his memories as well. There’s no real reason for him to have kept them, certainly no reason he had to that I can see from a writing perspective, unless it was to preserve his relationship with Tabitha (because that didn’t exist in high school).

I do think it’s really hard for them not to follow through on Jughead/Tabitha without looking really racist, frankly. And I think the writers care about that. And I think they should. I also think them backing out at this point is straight up bad writing, even if it’s to go back to bh. I think the window on going back to bh closed a while ago, and now we’re just shipbaiting the fans. I think jt has a good chance to be endgame, though I don’t know how much of it we’ll be seeing during this season, because I don’t know what Tabitha’s exact situation is. 

Probability: 50-70%

7.) Moose/Kevin 

I really used to hate this ship. A lot. I was really sad when Joaquin died because I knew in my heart it meant that RAS was never going to let go of Moose/Kevin. I never really trusted Kevin/Fangs because every time RAS has had the opportunity to go back to Moose/Kevin, he has done so as quickly as he fucking can. He’s really invested in this, so I just think we’re going to get it as long as Moose’s actor is willing to be here. 

Though, honestly, I’ve come to like this ship a lot more in the last season. Every other ship is so garbage (except jt, which is cute) that they’re actually fine and even endearing now. Moose is also less toxic, which is good, and he’s really supportive of Kevin. And heaven knows that boy needs all the support he can get. 

Probability: 70-90% 

8.) Cheryl/Toni Dude. Cheryl’s best childhood lesbian friend broke up with Cheryl because she saw their love written in the stars. There’s not much more of a guarantee than that. 

Also their fans have been as loud as possible about the fact that their ship has been done so dirty in so many ways, and frankly, they were right to say it. The writers seem to know they done fucked up in splitting these two up for so long. Really looking forward to seeing them as 50s lesbians. 

Probability: 99% (because there’s no such thing as certainty with these motherfuckers)

Anime Review - Kakegurui (S1 + S2)

I watched all of Kakegurui within a few days- it kept me on the edge of my seat and was overall a thrilling watch.

Watch Kakegurui if: - You enjoy math, gambling, statistics or numbers - You enjoy harem anime with lots of lovely women - You enjoy dark, thriller anime - You have a dark sense of humor - You are able to suspend your disbelief

Do NOT watch Kakegurui if: - You are easily triggered (discussions of self-h***, su*****, se**** a******) - You dislike over-sexualization of high school characters - You prefer a slice-of-life high school anime

NO SPOILERS below the cut - continue safely!

Though I very much disliked the extreme points of this anime, which included self mutilation and pushing the limits of gambling, I enjoyed the numbers behind it and getting to learn about each game, along with the complex social structures held up by Japan's elite. The second season was especially good - it felt like they really found themselves.

The main character is supposed to be the guy- I don't even remember his name, he's so boring- but Yumeko steals the spotlight away immediately. He's a pretty generic harem protagonist who doesn't do much other than narrate the series and help put the gambling into perspective as a "normal person." Yumeko, though a compelling character, is a bit oversexualized and over-the-top. I think, though, in order for a gambling anime like this one to be enjoyable, it almost has tot be completely over-the-top. The bets are on insane stakes, such as one's life or one's future or absurd amounts of money, and the characters are all almost caricatures.

One of the things I think this anime does quite well is the introduction of cheating. Of course, cheating is no fun in regular gambling, but it makes a lot of sense in this scenario. After all, these are uber-wealthy kids who are clawing their way to the top, of course they're going to cheat! Not only does Yumeko always find a way around the cheat, but she's quite the cunning player herself. I found this aspect kept the games from getting flat and repetitive.

One of the high points of this anime was Terano, pictured above. Her disability is NEVER mentioned, not even once. I'm not sure if this is the case in the manga as well, but she is allowed to just peacefully exist as a disabled character without her disability being a main plot point or even part of her backstory. She's clever and cunning, and a great contender to win the election (no spoilers, just season 2 plot). An excellent character overall.

A lot of the games were really cool, too. Most of them were original. "Life or Death" was a good game, and so was "Nim Type Zero." I didn't fully understand the point of the idol game show being a part of the anime- it seemed like a desperate attempt to tap into the idol fan market and to sell more merchandise, but those scenes were enjoyable nonetheless.

Overall, I'd give this anime a solid 7/10. While there were lots of parts I didn't like, I think it has great rewatch value and was amazing the first time through. I'm really hoping it gets renewed for a third season as it ends on a bit of a cliffhanger. Thanks for listening!

“You can doll.  But you have a...” his voice trails off.  He doesn’t want you to leave anymore than you want to.  “you have a duty, Dove.  We aren’t princes. We can’t...you have to marry royalty.”

“Alright, darlin’, you make the choice.  Go with yer duty, or ya stay here with us.”

“Lee, that’s not an option,” Steve starts.  “She is betrothed.  They’ll have our heads.”

“Let them,” Bucky finally stands beside you.  That cold metal hand grabbing your own.  You had hoped that he would get on board with this.  Knowing if he was for you staying, Steve would follow.  Should Steve be okay with the eight of you living in a harem, then the rest would follow. 

“That’s what we’re for to protect her.  We’ll fight to the death if we have to.  If you want,” looking into Bucky’s eyes, you realize all that you would be putting them through.  It’s unfair to ask these seven men to choose life or death for you.  It’s unfair that you would make them stay with you, as opposed to living a normal life.  “Dovey?”

“I can’t.  I want to, but...” but geeze do you want to.  Everything about the eight of you, is so right.  No one competing for attention, even Jake saying, there was seven days of the week.  Everyone seemed okay with a shared wife, but you couldn’t live in fear.  You knew the Princes’ had an army that would kill you all, and it just wasn’t worth it.  Their lives meant more to you, than your own.
