funniest thing about the roman mysteries books To Me is that i read secrets of vesuvius first and like. i was already into ancient rome but i only read it because i was also really into volcanoes at the time and thought oooh i wonder what other secrets there will be. about vesuvius. the front cover of the book was vesuvius erupting so there’s got to be a more secret secret. right. vesuvius being a volcano is not a secret. and then the eponymous secret of vesuvius was that vesuvius was, in fact, a volcano. like even the pompeii episode of what’s new scooby doo put more effort into coming up with a mystery plot. hello???

least favorite jared harris role
boy that's tricky. considering I watched both The Eternal and The Ward earlier this week (in lieu of birthday celebrations bc of course I celebrate by watching things with my one special little guy in it)... there are new contenders. that being said I think there's two answers for this: actual worst role, and role that is the most painful for me to watch. and it's two different answers actual worst role goes to Older Will Robinson in the 90's reboot of lost in space because not only did they put him in a fucking muppet wig but for SOME REASON they decided to dub his voice??? which is just a baffling choice on the part of the producers. it's painful to watch and to look at and it just isn't worth it like?? why would you cast that boy if that was all you were going to do with him? as for the 2nd, the role that is most painful for me to watch? the man from UNCLE. Look. I came in initially for my man. only for him to have a grand total of like. two minutes of screen time. if that. and it's a fucking guy ritchie film to boot (not entirely derogatory. he has his moments as a filmmaker. but some times I think 'this guy is gonna get cancelled any fucking day now' just by watching any given film of his). so then when I watched it, and told folks I watched it and that Henry Cavil is also in it, everyone else wanted to watch it with me. I have seen this movie a grand total of 5 separate times with 5 different people in the last half a year alone and let me tell you. that's four too many times. not worth it for the sliver of jared being delicious that you get for your efforts of sitting through the rest of a guy ritchie film. deeply unsatisfying fr. never fucking again man.

Man, I was so hoping Amaryllis would be from Victorian period because of her outfit, it really seems similar to that sort of style to me. Or maybe Edwardian, that's already fairly similar to begin with. I everyone so far has had era-related outfits, I'm kinda baffled on this one. On the other hand, the idea of her possibly being responsible for the eruption of Mount Vesuvius is actually really hilarious, I'll admit. And it gives the possibility for her to be a Void type, without violating the game's rules for what makes Void types, Void types (wishing for a curse or misfortune of some form.)
I don't know I have many Thoughts and not all of them are cohesive

Lord, what is it with people who claim to like classics, but hate classical languages? Specifically, but not exclusively, people who treat the reconstruction of classical languages as a worthless endeavor. Ignoring the fact that language as a spoken medium is integral to any culture, how is that not in the least bit cool to you? Why don't you want to know what Latin and Ancient Greek and Old Persian might have sounded like? You don't want to reconstruct an accurate picture of the classical world? You don't want to figure out how it all intersected?
I'm not even touching on the debate of whether these languages should be taught conversationally, or solely taught to be read (though personally, I'm in the camp of, "you will learn to sight read better if you also learn to speak.") I've encountered an outright hostility toward the idea of learning these languages from people otherwise interested in classics, and it baffles me. People studying classics at a university level who think Latin and Greek are a waste of time, and theoretical pronunciation, vernacular reconstruction, etc. are all pointless. Who claim this attitude was actually fostered by their professors.
I am um. Well. Angy.

“Amara thinks of her time as a slave in Chremes' household. It does not cheer her up to see parallels between her past and that of the destitute old woman beside her. "You didn't start life as a slave, did you?" Fabia asks, perhaps sensing her discomfort. "I can always tell." "How can you tell?" "You still act like you matter.”
