geyser by mitski is a really good song to describe nina’s relationship with Jeff. the way that the song starts off so slow, so quiet and thin, but then swells to a grand and full sound like how nina’s obsession started off so small but then grew to control her entire life. love the line “and hear the harmony only when it’s harming me”

a pearl by mitski and LJ (another mitski song cause she’s my fav artist ever) about his abandonment mmm. plus the slightly sinister sounding chords showing his evilification(?? yk what i mean. when he turned emo) ugh “you’re growing tired of me” and “i fell in love with a war and nobody told me it ended” so him

So I love love wolves/dogs and rabbits/deer as both are very interesting the differences between dogs and wolves is a fact of freedom, that sure a wolf miiight listen to you (but mostly bc of food or other sources you might give them I mean they're wild) while a dog is absolutely domesticated but...they still bite and when pushed they WILL fight back even if they're loyal

Rabbits and deer esp when combined for a Jackalope are two things: my love of contrasts and double meanings and metaphors for transness!! I see antlers personally, esp since its different between sexes in deer when it comes them and growing/shedding them as a trans thing idk how to explain it lol

now with the contrasts and double meanings with rabbits!! its such a cute lil fluffy thing but its interesting when the rabbit bites down, when you see that the black and white world-view of carnivores and vegetarians are actually blurred and that during winter they'll eat meat when its available most animals and esp rabbits are very opportunistic

and ofc there's the predator and prey aspects of both between dogs/deer and wolves/rabbits!!!

also side note but I also been loving lizards/shrikes and returning to the classic motif for reverie: foxes/ravens (both clever beings that get a bad rap in fairy tales)

also I looooove fairy tales and myths, William several folk tales that I got inspired by, I wonder what sorta scenes and designs and skills based of these: Red Riding Hood (#1 FAIRY TALE) Anything with the big bad wolf, sleeping beuty, beuty and the beast, the white knight/prince charming motif, witches motif, and hansel and grentel but what if one of the kids take the other instead of a parent? Can you really call that your sibling?

like for instance Will has his red cloak that acts as a red "heroic and prince charming/white knight" cape that also has a red hood, not too mention his motivations are mainly pure righteousness and his desinated roles by the story are either prince charming/white knight or love interest (mainly both if he was saving a princess from the princess pov but instead he's saving and protecting the "evil" dragon)

alsoooo MORE CONTRASTS like life/death and growth/rot and sun/moon and ice/fire (again these can be applied to will who has a rot curse but inherant magic for healing and being related to plants and also ice and fire magic

also persephone/hades dynamic esp where you think on the surface its the cute bubbly life and flowers girlie (doesn't even have to be a girl again: will) with their gloomy dark death and rot guy (yes this is talking about the dragon guy buuut he's honestly more of a dark golden retreiver that would eat and kill anyone who messes with will who also has 1 braincell that uses 60% of it to think abt will)

References to Greek Mythology in Disco Elysium

Note : I have not yet finished the game, I’ll likely make a second part, if there’s more.

Let’s look at the original title of the game. 

“No truce with the furies” 

The furies, Chthonic Deities Of Vengeance,  in Greek Mythology relentlessly hunt down those who commit crimes.

This is seen best in the Oresteia, where the titular character Orestes is hunted down by the furies because he killed his mother after a vision from the God Apollo, who told him to seek revenge for his father’s ( Agamemnon ) murder by her hand for sacrificing one of their daughters to the Goddess Artemis. 

These furies hunt him down, they follow him even to his dreams, and only he can see them. They follow him where everywhere he goes, without fail. 

The furies for Harry during the game are of course, are his inability to let mysteries go, his compulsions and his mistakes. They much like the furies, follow him. Relentlessly.

Yet there is some semblance of relief.

In the original play, Orestes runs to Athens and the Goddess Athena, in order to save him from the furies, sets up the world’s first trial. She gives him a chance to redeem himself, to free himself of what haunts him.

For Harry, Martinaise is his Athens. There is no divine entity to help him just yet, but here, lacking all his memories, he has a chance to rebuild. To remorse, to restore what he destroyed. It is not complete, it is not easy, it is not immediate and yet there is a chance. There is hope to get rid of what haunts, even if not fully.

Let’s look at the actual title of the game.

 “Disco Elysium”.

Elysium in Greek mythology is basically the Greek Version of heaven. Elysium falls early on the river Styx and is where all the Greek Heros and the mortals favored by the Gods.

Elysium is a place where they can live in peace and security. ( Technically there are two isles in Elysium but that’s for later )

In game, Elysium is not achieved. Things aren’t perfect. The game isn’t about the big peace, it’s about little pieces of Elysium stolen against time. It’s about the journey.

And Now, the quote at the starting of the game. 

“The furies are at home in the mirror” 

This one’s pretty clear! It’s from a poem by R.S. Thomas, much like the old title. This is pretty clearly referring to how Harry’s demons, or his furies are self caused.

I personally divide them into

His inability to let mysteries go    

His compulsions 

His mistakes                     

(Broad Categories, I know and I’d like to tie each one to a fury but it’s not meant to be taken that literally.)

I think the scene with mirror and the expression might be a reference to that. ( Of course, it represents other things too but again, I’m going off topic)

And Now the dream (?) with the Corpse Of The Bloated Drunk. 

One of the dialogue options is “You’ve fucked/missed Elysium 3 times” or something along those lines.

Now, about the 2 isles of Elysium, they are The Islands of the Blessed and The Lethean fields of Hades/Haides.

The average Elysium dweller ends up in The Lethean fields of Hades/Haides, named after the River Lethe, which had the power to erase memories.

A lesser known fact about greek myth that a soul who reaches The Leathean fields can chose to be reborn and if a person is reborn 3 times, and everytime they reach Elysium, they’ll be taken to The Islands of the Blessed.

The implication here is that Harry had 3 chances to reach The Blessed Isles, 2 chances given to him pre-canon by his colleagues, and the one he seems to have squandered at the start of the game. The corpse is telling him “You’ve ruined your chances. You can’t get in now” 

He’s wrong of course, since Harry can still get clean and fix his act, his rebirth and attempt for elysium isn’t yet over. There’s still hope. 

And, That’s all I’ve encountered in my playthrough yet!

Is Naoya plotting something for the mc as well? Implying to what Toji said to him, I still don't know what he's plotting in his mind after Toji said that.

I also love how Toji's been concerned for the mc and he's been aware of what's happening to her life.

i don't know what to tell you miss ma'am, cuz i've been getting more and more into stories where the mc or y/n is more raw and relatable, and THIS REALLY HITS THE SPOT. lowkey i get sad when people talk bad about self-insert stories or y/n stories and then the reason they do is because of some cliche element majority or a large chunk of writers already dropped.

self insert fanfics are a comfort to me? in a way? idk how to explain it, cuz it sounds weird when i try typing it out loud- but HEAR ME OUT FIRST OKIE? most fics ive read are oneshots or stories that dont require much assessing or reflecting of a situation because most have similar plots aknxjdbdj i know i sound awful akdnidjd and i kind of know what to expect.

on the other hand, the ones written more realistically, like this one, wherein y/n isnt a simp right off the bat of the guys asking for forgiveness, y/n has her great moments and not so pleasant moments, with her inner turmoil and a d e e p dive into theirs and the guys character and providing new insight is where i kinda insert myself kandhsnjs. though y/n doesnt always do what i would do, reading more realistic self inserts help put things into perspective to me. they help me actually think about what i would do in a situation like that and eventually apply what i decided on later in life. like toxic friendships and relationships-

the music blared rather annoyingly loud as you walked towards the counter, a bit tipsy from the initial toll of the vodka you didn't know you induced. blearily, you took out your phone and scrolled through your contacts, sighing as you stared at his name: iwaizumi hajime.

the rush pounded into your veins, further making you flustered as you brought the gadget to your ears, making you feel warm and fuzzy. the crowd didn't help ease your nerves either as the phone rang continuously.

on the other line, iwaizumi put his book down as his phone lit up with your name on screen. he immediately perks up as he hears the loud music on your background.

"iwaizumi-san, i think someone spiked my drink." there was a bit of a slur in your words but he did slightly sigh in relief to know that you are still aware of your surroundings.

"i'll come get you. send your location." he rushed to get his keys as he placed his phone on the dashboard of his car.

the music blared through his phone as he pulls up on the street. "hey, y/n. you there?" he heard the slight hum he recognized as yours.

"come and meet me at front."

you subtly sighed in relief as you left your post, ignoring the man walking to your direction seconds before you heard iwaizumi's voice and saying goodbye to your friends.

he stood under the moonlight worriedly as he ended the call when he saw you. you didn't know if it was the sudden spike of courage from the alcohol but you wrapped your arms around him, immediately closing the distance. startled, his eyes widened as his heart skipped beats. you looked up at him and smiled. "you probably don't know this but you always smell like home, haji."

a slight blush formed on his cheeks as he wraps his arms around you to support you. "what are you saying, y/n? come on-" you squeezed him lightly as he started to move, preventing him from taking another step. "i like you, iwaizumi-san." he bit his lip to keep himself from melting and opted to sigh and ruffle your hair.

"it's pretty obvious, baby. now come on. let's get you to your apartment."

SOOO REAL OF U!!!! god what a time to be alive is soooo good im obsessed w it too and like i can absolutely see it having a similar vibe to the first few songs on this is why!!! i think it's not only the world is ending and awful themes but also how upbeat those songs, in general, sound while having such a dark topic? like how sarcastic and tongue in cheek it all is too makes them have similar vibes for Sureee and i love that both fob and paramore are riding that "the world is horrible and i'm watching it end so. fuck it lets at least dance while we watch!" attitude fjnfkfnd
