In the spirit of not letting my perfectionism deter me from actually Doing and Posting things: I spent a few hours yesterday, designing a new header/banner image for mapping purposes!

I might eventually go back and tweak it a bit more, but I quite like the outcome (especially given that it's been some time since I did any major image editing).

I also created a new icon to match:

I like it quite a bit, but I'm not sure whether I'll use it on tumblr. I'm A Creature Of Habit, and I've gotten very used to the mapping blog having the simple silver Sirena logo on black 😅

For now, I think I'll stick with the logo I'm used to, but I still wanted to share this. And now back to the actual mapping post I was working on before I got distracted.

Dracula Daily Reactions

1. What is this project?

To record this collective experience, I'm setting out to reblog and catalog, in order, every Dracula Daily-related post tagged either #dracula or #dracula daily during the 2022 season. I started from April 27, 2022-ish, and the last email comes in November.

Dracula Daily may happen again next year, and I hope it does. The goal, however, is to capture this year's incredible, first-time-ever (as far as I know) wave of synchronously paced interest in a classic novel.

I hope the resulting archive can be a source of joy and interest for Dracula readers, tumblr users, scholars, and the many people who are all three. 🧛🏻‍♂️🦇🖤

2. What if I don't want my post (or my tags) here?

No problem! The goal is to capture the overall fandom activity, not to invade any individual's privacy or overstep anyone's personal boundaries. I truly appreciate every time a person has said, "Hey, can you delete this?"

The finished product has finally been unveiled. How does it feel? Any nerves about it?

There were so many nerves leading up to this moment. I was so afraid that it was either not going to get finished on time or that it wasn't going to honor my grandfather's legacy.

What was your thought process during the planning stages of this project?

My thought process was just to build something great to honor my grandfather's legacy. I poured a lot of my memories of him into the planning and then did my best to bring those memories to life in the halls. Honestly, it was a very cathartic project for me.

Having a grandfather so beloved in the community, did it ever feel daunting to take this on?

Oh, absolutely. A lot of my life is lived to make my grandfather proud and this was no different.

Any hard aspects of the job that made you feel like you wouldn't be able to get it done?

Just the final stages when it gets down to the nitty gritty of designing all of the spaces. But in a lot of the bigger projects those are the items that take more time because you have to be very detail oriented and pay attention to every little thing.

And lastly, would you say this is your proudest moment?

In my career, yes. There isn't much that compares to getting to create something to remind the community of my hero.

Love the contrast between the Americans’ “Apollo” and the Soviets’ “Sputnik.” You got the Americans naming their rocket after a Greek god trying to communicate the grandness and importance of this rocket. And you got the Soviets naming their rocket “fellow traveler.” Like a friend you go on an  adventure with together. This rocket is our little friend lol

I want everybody who’s calling Ken a Trophy Husband to know that he’s actually a Trophy Boyfriend, because when Ruth Handler invented Ken in the 1960s, she was adamant that he would never marry her and instead be her “handsome steady”, so that Barbie remained a figure of independence for the little girls and was never put in the position of housewife.

Her house is hers. She bought it and furnished it with money she made in her own job. In STEM, in politics, in healthcare, in fashion, in academy, in customer service. Her credit card is in her name (women in the US couldn’t have their own regardless of marital status until 1974). And it’s all pink and fashionable because femininity and badassness aren’t mutually exclusive. No matter who you are, you can be anything.

That’s why Barbie’s slogan is “you can be anything”. Teaching these ideals to little girls is why Barbie was created. Empowering women and empowering femininity is the original meaning of the Barbie doll. It’s not that you have to be all this to be a woman, but if you are all or some of this, you too are awesome.

And somehow pop culture deliberately changed that narrative. Sexualised, bimbofied, and villainised her, when she actually isn’t responsible for the impossible beauty standards — people are, she’s just a stylised, not-to-scale toy like most others.

Men are frothing because he’s just Ken and I guess they were expecting her to be just Barbie, but that’s exactly what Ken is. Canonically. A badass woman’s himbo boyfriend.

This movie has the potential to radically change the way we collectively see Barbie into what Ruth Handler originally intended, I’m so very excited

And as I am slooowly coming back into a brain space where I can more deeply engage with Trek things, I figured it was high time to update said archive, because I know I have fallen behind. But surely, it can't be that bad, right?

Is there a way I can help?

Reader help

The way I'm doing this is, I've paged wayyyy back in both the #dracula and #dracula daily tags, and I'm queueing each post in order. So if an original post is tagged with either of those, I should catch it. (Details on my methods here.) The hitch is that this method only shows new, original posts with those tags. It doesn't show: a) reblogs that add especially interesting/funny things to the original posts, or b) posts from before May 2022 that have been revived as part of the Dracula Daily conversation. (Here is a great example, sent by a lovely Dracula Daily reader.) So if you have favorites of those, do send them over! 🥰

Encouraging messages are so welcome. This is a pretty ambitious undertaking, especially for one person (lol), so it's wonderful to hear that other people think it's worthwhile too! I'd love to know how it's proving interesting or useful to you.

Tech help

The most time- and labor-intensive aspects are:

manually queueing each post in order, and

paging all the way back to May 6 (or whichever day I'm up to) when I accidentally click away from the far-back page in each tag.

Tech questions

The biggest ask: I don't suppose there's any way to automatically queue each post in a given site-wide tag? Very understandably, tumblr might not allow that, even with Xkit-esque workarounds, because it could lend itself to spamming or abuse. That said, if you know a way to manage it, it would be a massive help for this project.

Do you know of (or want to devise) a way that I could jump to a specific day in a given site-wide tag? For example: I'd love to skip to the May 6 posts tagged #dracula instead of having to click allll the way back from May 21 (or whatever day it is when I accidentally close the tab/click away/have to restart my computer. PAIN).

Is there were a way to view both tags together in one page? For example, "Here are all the posts from May 6, in order, that are tagged either '#dracula' or '#dracula daily' or both." That would save me from having two windows open side-by-side and comparing timestamps.

Do you know of a way to publish more than 50 posts automatically from the queue every day? 150-200 would be great. There were more than 1000 relevant posts on May 5 alone! At a rate of 50 a day, posts from Dracula Daily 2022 will still be publishing from the queue well into 2023. 😅

When Palestinian’s say “From the river to the sea, Palestine will be free,” they are not calling for the ethnic cleansing of Israeli Jews/all Jewish people entirely. They are just asking for decolonisation.

Between the river (the Jordan River) and the sea (the Mediterranean Sea) lies Palestine, which has been occupied by Israel for the past 75 years. When they say Palestine will be free, they mean exactly that- for decolonisation; to end the illegal occupation of land that was theirs first.

I don’t know where the idea that this motto means genocide or is a “rallying cry for terrorists” came from, but all sources I have seen that spread this message are all pro-Israel and have unreliable propaganda filled articles. There is one article specifically that says that the Palestine flag emoji is used as shorthand for this phrase, and using it is antisemitic.

I hope people keep using this motto, keep chanting it at protests, and know that it does not making them antisemitic, pro-genocide, or an ignorant person. For it to not be obvious at this point that no Palestinian wants an ethnic cleansing of any kind, is shocking.
