I do think it’s so telling of how luffy acts when he’s by himself (amazon lilly impel down marineford) versus when he’s with his crew because obviously there was a lot on the line during those arcs, but even before he heard about ace’s execution date, luffy was much more actively and noticeably “with it”. fresh off losing his friends their absence was clear. he still laughed and smiled and was a bit goofy but at the same more outwardly level headed & thoughtful about his actions. didn’t act as brash (didn’t steal a boat bc he knew he couldn’t navigate it). actively acknowledged and thanked the people who helped him (boa, the amazon lily warriors, even buggy). considered the weight of his actions and didn’t immediately start a fight. because he DIDNT have his support system. he didn’t have the people he trusted (nami to guide, sanji to cook and collect info, zoro to protect and watch over / stand by his side, etc) so he no longer had the luxury of being so carefree

Thinking a lot about how in One Piece there's a continuing theme of self sacrifice that often doesn't meet its end (I won't say always because there are some characters who have eaten shit for a cause). But I just think about how easy it would be to just accept their sacrifice but the narrative won't allow that. Robin, Zoro, Sanji, Jinbe, they've all tried to give their life for the sake of others but they can't because they really don't have to. I think about Robin's "I want to live" regularly. It's so easy to die for someone but it's so much harder to live for them. And living for them gives back so much more than dying for them does. Dying is just a moment but living lets you have more moments and more time to show how much you care and lets you do so much for others. I feel like a lot of other shonen show dying as one of the bravest things you can do but One Piece is so different because it shows you that living is actually the bravest thing.

i hate to say this but saruman is a very understandable character because he studied the works of evil to better understand them and defeat them, but in the process he became corrupted. and that’s just what law school is like. you either die young or live long enough to imprison your friend in a tower because you’re going crazy studying for the evil bar exam. which is like the regular bar exam.
