I went to a restaurant with a friend yesterday and upon entering we saw these splendid blueberry tarts under bell jars on the counter and we made jokey small talk with the waitress like oh, people will fight over these if there's not enough for everyone, it'll tear families apart, are you making more later? and she said no, I'm afraid that's our entire stock for today, but there are 18 slices, it should be plenty! It was a small village restaurant with only one menu du jour so there weren't any other dessert options but they don't usually get that many customers—but then a couple of large groups arrived and most people noticed the tarts like we did, and went ohh blueberry tart, it's been a while, I can't wait, and it became clear that when we'd get to the end of our meal there would be winners and losers in the blueberry tart rush
But later as we were about to order dessert I wasn't hungry anymore and I was like well that's too bad but someone else will be glad to get 'my' slice of tart—and my friend said yeah, me :) You should order it anyway, I'll eat both! At first I thought she was joking, but no. I said, there's not enough for everyone, you can't take two, and she said, we were going to order two slices, what difference does it make? and I was baffled that she couldn't see the ethical difference between two people eating one slice of tart each vs. one person eating two, when there's a limited quantity of tart. I felt like we were in a simplistic social justice metaphor it was so obvious, but there was no changing her mind. When I said "it's just... not nice" she said "okay" with a shrug, and what can you say to that. She added, you don't know any of these people and I was like, why are we reverting to tribal dynamics in a non-apocalyptic setting, how would you feel if we'd arrived a bit later and seen others ordering two desserts knowing you'd get zero? And she said, I would think that's their right, and I felt kind of amazed.
I pointed out that if she didn't think it was a wee bit wrong, she wouldn't ask me to order her second piece as if it was for me, and she said yeah maybe we don't need to do that, there's no law preventing me from ordering two desserts. What about Kant's categorical imperative Okay I guess you're not breaking any laws by taking more than your fair share of a thing other people also want, just failing a kindergarten-level morality test. I felt embarrassed for sounding like an annoying preachy rigid person so I dropped the issue, and as she ate her two slices she'd smile at me every time we overheard someone order coffee without dessert—like "See? There'll be enough, no one will be deprived of tart because of me!" as if that cancelled the fact that she didn't care in the first place. I guess it was one of these tiny issues that can still significantly alter the way you perceive a person. I tried to tell myself not to be so bothered about this small thing but I was! so bothered. And I felt like writing a letter to some agony aunt like "should I end a friendship over irreconcilable blueberry tart ethics"

tbh the writing of peaky blinders isn't even that good and while the cinematography is at times very striking and the show as a whole is mostly alright, I'm fully convinced that the only reasons it's as popular as it is are 1) people (men) love to romanticise violence, 2) sigma males with no reading comprehension, and 3) cillian murphy is an obnoxiously good actor.

“I encourage you to boycott Eurovision. Not because refusing to do so makes you a hypocrite. Not even because it will ease your ideological discomfort. But because in the end, our feelings don’t matter, our actions do...
Self-abnegation isn’t the point of the exercise here. Try not to think of the boycott as something you’re denying yourself. Boycotts, at their heart, are expressions of solidarity and friendship. Think of the boycott as just this: an expression of solidarity and friendship you’re able to extend to the people of Palestine.”
— Hera Lindsay Bird’s article on Boycotting Eurovision this year, given the fact that Israel has not been kicked out of the competition, despite its continuous acts of genocide against the Palestinian people.

A Zionist organization is asking for the censorship of Elise Lucet, a French journalist, for antisemitism. She could get a huge fine and her “show” could be canceled. You know what she did? She made a “investigation” about what’s happening in Gaza with the help of UNICEF and the help of journalists in Gaza.
The investigation aired two days ago and shows all the horrors happening in Gaza at the hands of Israel. Which apparently should be censored cause it’s antisemitic.
The worst part is that they kinda try to both side the responsibilities insisting on October 7th and pretending that it’s only a minority of Israeli who agree with the genocide and who block humanitarian aid. They also never say who is killing and wounding and traumatizing these children they show.
So it’s not even that good but they are still getting called antisemitic. You know why? It because while the words of the French journalist seems to both side a bit the horrors happening the images are very telling and anyone with a heart will understand that it’s not “both sides”. The contrast between the words trying to both side the situation and the images is actually so obvious that part of me suspect they did it specifically to avoid censorship.
Anyway here is a link in French to one of the videos and you can watch it fully too (~20 minutes) in French on the link they shared.

daily reminder that boycotting is not a moral stance but a political strategy, so the whole “there’s no ethical consumption under capitalism” argument is not the gotcha you think it is
you can refer to BDS if you’d like a list of companies to focus your efforts on. you can refer to this website if you’d like to become more conscientious about what you’re buying and check for brands/products to avoid.
*please note that i am a palestinian who has been boycotting my entire life. do not try to explain to me in the tags or reblogs or replies what a targeted boycott is or complain about giving up your comfort for something that you (incorrectly) believe does not make an impact. being quiet is free. exercise your right to remain silent today.

Her name was Saly, she was five years old. She was like any child, she probably liked to play with her toys, she was probably learning to read, she probably like to spend time with her family and friends.
Maybe she would have been a doctor, or a farmer, or a engineer. Maybe she would have advanced the field of physics or medicine, written a best seller novel or stared in a major movie production; Or she might have had a quieter life, the world might have never known her name, but her friends and family would have and that might have been enough.
But no one will ever know now because Israel took those lives away from her, the tens of thousands of possibles that lay before each child burning like candle lights in cool summer night sniffed out in an instant. A last story shared by thousands of Palestinian children in Gaza.
