I think about Sukimamori a lot.

Sukimamori (sukima = gap, yamori = gecko, mamori/mori = guardian) is a youkai created by Japan Railways West, Osaka Municipal College of Design and Osaka Metropolitan University for an awareness campaign to warn small kids (and their parents) to "mind the gap" and not fall between the train and the platform.

It dwells in the gap between train and platform (appearing when the gap is created) and is 14 meters long. It likes people who board carefully, eclairs (it kind of looks like one), and gaps, and dislikes people who board carelessly or run on the platform. Despite being a little scary, it's actually helpful and wants to stop kids from falling in. Most of all, the campaign itself - titled the mouthful yet delightfully vague Children Falling Into Gaps Prevention Project - is supposed to be attention-grabbing in order to remind people that this is a thing that can happen.

Yeah, well. Mission successful.

"Don't show any gaps in your defense", the slogan goes.

One or two of these traits could be a coincidence, but I want to believe that the specific combination of a 1.) purple youkai that 2.) lives in the gaps at 3.) train stations with 4.) prominent hand and eye imagery couldn't have been designed in a complete vacuum from Touhou. Certainly that's a pretty harmless thing to believe in. And not a hard connection to make.

In the end, though, Sukimamori just stands out to me because I really like this creature in its own right.

Touhou life sim fangame where you're a human whose goal is to become a youkai without Reimu splitting your head in half.

Like ... you start out living in the safety of the Human Village, and you spend the first phase of the game learning magic and danmaku and survival skills so that you can live alone outside of the Village without dying; however, the longer you stay in the village, the more you have A Reputation As A Human, and consequently, the longer it takes to shuck said reputation -- and if you try to make yourself youkai-like while still living in the Village, that's another potential reason why you might get Fortune Teller'd. maybe you're an Outsider who came to Gensokyo specifically to youkai yourself, meaning you start out without any kind of reputation, but also your basic "wilderness survival" level is lower.

upon transforming, your build automatically changes based on what kind of youkai you've become, you get to rejigger your build a bit in other some minor ways, and your personality changes in ways you don't 100% have control over. you then have like a year to start an Incident, which plays out based on how your build and plot have ended up. the Incident itself probably won't result in a Reimu Bad End no matter what it is, in and of itself; even "destroy Gensokyo" can be handled by one of the usual player characters as long as you stop after you're beaten, whereas if you do some weird shenanigans which can't be stopped by throwing Reimu at the problem, they Sages will deal with it some other way by like Yukari manipulating some boundary to turn your own Incident against you, or one of them tossing a strategically-aimed Flandre in your direction. hey, maybe you could play as an Incident-resolver and defeat yourself!

as a youkai, the life sim is very different, but you're pretty much out of the woods as long as you cause Problems now and then. scare and/or eat humans, kind of thing. or just harass Reimu and contribute to the Shrine's bad reputation.

some possible bad ends which aren't caused by Reimu:

got eaten in your home in the Forest of Magic or wherever, because you quit living in the Village before your defending-against-youkai skills were up to snuff

starved to death because you burned your bridges in the Human Village before your regular wilderness survival skills were up to snuff

starved to death after becoming a youkai because you became something other than a Magician and you weren't scaring/eating humans enough

started dating a youkai while still a human and you slept over at their place long enough that they decided to eat you, or whatever other character-specific bad ends (i.e. Alice bodyhorrors you into a doll). the game still treats this as a successful romantic route.

pranked to death by fairies while still human (it's always obvious when this is about to happen, you can pretty much only get this one if you actively go out of your way to let it happen)

killed/ate any major characters other than a Hourai immortal, resulting in retaliation.

random, stupid idea you can ignore, but what is the reader was like, a kitsune or something? like their world didn't have abilities, but they had yokai or something? you can ignore this if it's to complicated or you have to much work already!!

Description: For some reason, you were always wearing a fox costume, while reading BSD. At least, BSD character were sure, that it's a costume.

Warning: OOC. Mentions of alcohol. I add eight links in the A/N, if you want to learn more about mentioned youkai or see, how BSD characters looked like in costumes. English is my second language.

You were having a time of your life. You had a plate of fried tofu, some good sake and new volume of BSD manga. You feet like a happy kitsune.

With your tails and ears visible, you were reading manga. Suddenly, you noticed, that your phone started to glow.

Two things happened.

First, a bunch of people appeared in your living room.

Second, you, for the first time in centuries, lost control and turned into a fox.

For one moment everything was fine. Then, you tried to set the intruders on fire. Perhaps, they were your fellow kitsunes, who decide to prank you.

Well, you didnt like it in one bit.

Time to teach them a lesson.

🐾 Okay, when they see you for the first time, they thought that you were wearing a costume. Like... You have fox ears and nine tails... You have to be wearing a costume.

🐾 But, when you transformed into a nine-tailed fox, because they startled you, when they appeared in your world, they realized, that you are, indeed, not a human. Especially, after you, an angry nine-tailed fox, tried to set them on fire.

🐾 After some explanations, fried tofu (thanks, Kyouka) and sake (thanks, Kaji) you calmed down and turned back into your half-fox half-human form.

🐾 And then, the time for an explanation from you arrived.

🐾 You told them, that your world has youkai, that were living near humans for thousands of years.

🐾 While youkai were hiding their existence from humans a secret, it doesn't mean, that youkais were hiding from humans.

🐾 With some cautious behaviour and with help from each other, youkais were secretly living among humans.

🐾 You quickly noticed, that BSD Cast looked guilty. They thought, that you will be uncomfortable with them knowing your secret. You assured them, that you are actually happy. You liked humans and were glad to have human friends who will accept you as a kitsune.

🐾 You bond with BSD Cast really quickly.

🐾 You, Dazai and Gogol formed a prankster group. You three became a worse nightmare for Kunikida, and, from time to time, for Dostoevsky.

🐾 You and Kyouka often eat tofu together.

🐾 You, Dazai, Fukuzawa, Verlaine, Rimbaud, Fukuchi, Kaji, Yosano, Oda, Ango and Taneda became drinking buddies.

🐾 Kenji want to meet other youkais. He talks with every animal he can find.

🐾 You nap on Kenji's lap in your fox form from time to time.

🐾 After characters get their costumes from the app (their costumes from their cards), you had a photoshoot.

🐾 Now, you have a photo with Yamawaro! Kenji, Diviners! Fukuzawa, Atsushi, Junchirou, Naomi, Kunikida, Mori, Elise and Higuchi, Tengu! Dazai, Kitsune! Kyouka, Chokeshin!Yosano, Jorogumo! Kouyou, Shutendoji! Chuuya and Inugami! Akutagawa.

🐾 You had a feeling, that this year Halloween will be awesome. The neighborhood will be 'terrorized' by a group of youkai.

🐾 You have a feeling, that your life will never be boring again.

🐾 All thanks to your human friends.

🐾 You were a one lucky fox. You were friends with so many humans. And BSD cast were so happy to be your friends.

The thing with gods and youkai in Touhou is that they do not have "biology". The physiology of a youkai or full-fledged god is three preternatural metaphors in a trench coat -- they are entirely supernatural entities, born from human fears and imagination. It's stories told around the campfire which has blossomed into mythology, plus "common sense" circa 1885 about how life works and exactly zero science, with a vague-gesture towards "feminine" in the case of the humanoids in Gensokyo. The cast of Touhou Project are "girlthings" in a very literal sense.

This even applies to different species of youkai. In ... Wild and Horned Hermit, I believe, a bunch of kappa effectively transformed into yamawaro after staying on dry land for too long and they just rolled with it, because "yamawaro are kappa that live on dry land". IIRC rhere's more than one folkloric story about foxes or tanuki becoming human after shapeshifting and deciding to live that life for the rest of their lives.

And no details have been given about how youkai reproduce, because ZUN just isn't into that kind of thing; however, the existence of half-human and half-youkai hyprids like Rinnosuke, and of sisters (the Komeijis) and of youkai-magicians who are born (Patchouli), suggests that humanoid youkai can have children the normal way. It Just Works.™ And since gods in Touhou canon are basically "human plus" in appearance outside of animal theming, it should be even more straightforward. Gender? I 'ardly know 'er! If you're "woman-shaped" you can get pregnant (bar folklore-compatible reasons why you couldn't, such as becasue you're dead). Birth happens normally, because that's "just common sense"; the child has whatever shape and set of features would be the most reasonable, in folkloric and "narrative" terms, via the path of least resistance. If the parents are the same "species", the child is also that species, and if one of the parents is a human, the result is just a hanyou (if the other parent is a youkai) or arahitogami (if the other is a god). IIRC Touhou doesn't specifically have examples where one parent is a god and the other is a youkai, but again, it should whatever is the most reasonable; there won't be any bizarre hybrids or whatever. Oh, the children would have a touch of both the monstrous and the divne, of course, but that's par for the course with regard to the blurred boundary between humans, gods, and youkai.

Therefore, Tsukasa and Sanae's hypothetical child would be normal.
