How their love affair blossomed

The Princess Royal and Commander Timothy Laurence

HELLO! Number 233 | Published: December 19th 1992 | Article 2/2

When Princess Anne's happy secret that she planned to wed Commander Timothy Laurence leaked out it brought much-needed joy to the beleaguered royal family.

One of the rare happy moments in a year of royal troubles came in May when Anne danced around a ballroom in the arms of her dashing naval officer. By “going public" with Tim just four weeks after her divorce from Captain Mark Phillips, she signalled that she was planning a future with the Queen's former equerry.

It was also her way of testing the water - to find out what the public's response might be. The general reaction was that the hard-working Princess deserved to find happiness at last after the break-up of her first marriage. But, in withholding the announcement of her betrothal until almost the last minute, Anne is once again proving that she likes to do things her way.

When she married Captain Phillips in 1973 she broke with royal precedent by insisting that her husband should not be given a title which he had not earned. This meant that her son Peter, 14, and daughter Zara, 11, have been the only grandchildren of a monarch this century who remain untitled.

Now Anne is once again setting a precedent by becoming the first divorced member of the Queen's family to marry for the second time. But, to avoid embarrassing her mother who is Supreme Governor of the Church of England, which does not sanction the remarriage of divorced people, she made the decision to wed in Scotland, because the Church of Scotland does not ban divorcées from remarrying.

And the man she has chosen comes from a vastly different background from her own. Tim Laurence is the great-great-great-grandson of a real-life merchant of Venice, called Zaccaria Levy, who in the 18th century left his home in the Italian city to forge a new life in England.

His business flourished and he became one of the first Jewish underwriters to become a member of Lloyds. In 1826, his son Joseph changed the family name to Laurence and by the next generation the family had abandoned its Jewish faith with Joseph's son, Percy, becoming an Anglican vicar.

And, at the weekend, Tim Laurence married in a Scottish village church, so different a setting from Princess Anne's first wedding in Westminster Abbey. But the Princess wants her new life to go on the way it began - out of the spotlight.

It was away from the limelight of official occasions ; that Princess Anne first began to notice Tim Laurence. In fact, they met through work - Tim was a junior officer in the Royal Navy, serving aboard the Royal Yacht Britannia. But it was not until 1986, when he became an equerry to the Queen, that they really got to know one another.

The Princess, who was frequently at Buckingham Palace on official duties, could not help bumping into the quiet, well-spoken young officer. And when she needed an adviser on her work for a charitable trust she thought of Tim Laurence immediately. Although the Princess was still married to Captain Philips, she was lonely. Tim was sympathetic and the soul of discretion but they maintained nothing ; more than a friendship.

At the same time, the Queen recognised her equerry's worth by turning to him constantly for assistance on her royal engagements. She awarded his diligence in August 1989 by making him a Member of the Royal Victorian Order, MVO, a personal award.

During this period, while the world speculated about her private life, Princess Anne simply got on with her job. The Queen grieved for her daughter and appreciated the fortitude Anne displayed over such a long period of unhappiness. Her dedication to a number of good causes, notably the Save The Children Fund won her the respect and admiration of the public and gradually the transformation from the former royal spoilsport, who told the Press to "Naff off", into the royal workhorse was completed.

To single her out from her sisters-in-law, the Queen wanted to honour her only daughter with the title Princess Royal. It was some time before Anne, who had been initially reluctant to accept, agreed - and the title was conferred in 1987. Between then and now the Princess Royal has devoted herself to her work but for the whole of this year her happiness has been evident to those around her and said far more than any Palace announcement.

And not even the ruby ring on her third finger, left hand, could match the sparkle in her eyes when the news was officially given that she and Tim would marry. Not so long ago, the Princess said: "Sailing on a sunny day with a fresh breeze blowing, with maybe somebody you really care for, is the nearest thing to Heaven I will get on this Earth", and it seems no coincidence that since she became close to Tim her love of sailing increased. At first the couple sailed on the Solent but when their plans to marry in Scotland were completed, her 36ft yacht Blue Doublet was moved to a new mooring on Lock Craigie.

Over the past month they have enjoyed several weekends sailing to the Outer Hebrides and to the islands of Jura and Mull. Far from the world's prying eyes, they could just be together, not Princess and commoner but friends who found love.

Tim’s calm discretion and charm quickly won him a special place in the midst of the royal family. Only a few feet from Anne (top) and already a familiar presence with little Zara (left). Over four years ago (right) he was a protective presence behind Princess Margaret.

20 Questions for fic writers

@dreamwatch tagged me and I actually woke up with enough time to do things before I need to go into work

1. How many works do you have on AO3?

10 - Which is very surprising to me considering my reluctance to release anything beyond my google docs for many years.

2. What’s your total AO3 word count?

142,085 lord

3. What fandoms do you write for?

Stranger Things (but Eddie Munson in specific honestly) primarily, but I've got some Baldur's Gate and Critical Role in the tubes right now too. The unifying theme here being I Am A Tremendous Nerd Who Likes DnD

4. What are your top 5 fics by kudos?

UNTITLED RECORDING rcd ca. 1987-1988 in the #1 slot by a wide margin, followed by ANACRUSIS ca. 1987, head line, wait, runner, and sunflower broke.

5. Do you respond to comments? Why or why not?

I sincerely try to! I am bad at accepting compliments or feedback so I always feel like I'm giving these sort of boilerplate platitudes and thanks and I wish I could accurately capture me reading every comment about 15 times kicking my leg under my desk. I try to be loudly receptive to the feedback I get. People took the time to read and respond! They don't have to do that!

6. What is the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending?

At first when I was going to respond to this I thought to myself "I'm not sure I really have a lot of fics that end with angst- oh its dog." Its dog. Its dog at the door. Its absolutely dog at the door. I apparently forgot I wrote it, but its dog.

7. What’s the fic you wrote with the happiest ending?

I don't necessarily think of myself who writes things with uncomplicated, expressly happy endings. I think a lot of my work that does end hopefully ends with a kind of watery fragile kind of happy. That probably says something about me but maybe it doesn't. But, to answer the question properly, I think head line is probably the least complicated sense of happy.

8. Do you get hate on fics?

Not that I've been made aware of. I'm sure that my writing style and my takes on characters are not everyone's cup of tea, but that's just the mark of a healthy fandom ecosystem. I'm also not a very """""big""""" writer so ain't no one looking at me.

9. Do you write smut? If so, what kind?

I have in the past, but I've never felt very confident in my writing when I do. I don't really feel like I can craft very erotic or romantic scenarios when it comes to physical expressions of sexuality, maybe its my writing style working against me or its just a generalized internal cringe @ me when I do. So these days I tend to skirt around it or speak more evocatively when necessary. I just feel like a total fucking goober when I start getting more direct and descriptive.

10. Do you write crossovers? What’s the craziest one you’ve written?

Always curious what constitutes as a crossover and what constitutes as an AU to some - ao3 tagging seems to muddy the waters for me. Because if you tag the source material for your AU it looks like a crossover but maybe you're simply using the world's logic but none of its characters? And that feels different to me than a strict crossover where characters from other titles are interacting with each other. Y'know? Instructions unclear wrote a DnD AU, one's mileage may vary if that's a crossover or not.

11. Have you ever had a fic stolen?

That's a thing? I mean. I guess people translating without attribution or reposting fics on other platforms is a thing. I guess that's that. Huh.

12. Have you ever had a fic translated?

Nope

13. Have you ever co-written a fic before?

Sort of? Not really? I definitely have played in the sandbox with @cwstau and their work, and have my own little toenail clipping a thing based on that work. I've done a little art here and there, and served as a sounding board, to a certain extent, in the formative stages of that fic's life but all of the heavy lifting is exclusively L's work. And while none of it will ever see the light of day I've also definitely theory crafted entire character dynamics and, sort of, speculative futures with friends in DMs. A lot of Yes And-ing each other about the threads we'll pull on.

14. What’s your all time favorite ship?

Man don't ask me that. I'm all over the road, I'm in the wind. I'll be hard in the paint on one thing and then something old will reemerge on the breeze and I just go back to places I one dwelled and be insane there.

15. What’s a WIP you want to finish but doubt you ever will?

lol any of them. Seriously, the fact that I have finished and published 10 things this year is a testament to. Something. I have no idea what. Something, because I have never been this kind of productive in many many moons and that productivity is a fickle thing that could leave just as soon as its arrived. My google docs is a graveyard of fics I've started and stopped and had grand plans for and mostly finished or entirely finished but never did anything with.

16. What are your writing strengths?

hahah bad at this question but I think I am good at research, when the fic in question demands it. I like to think I can synthesize that research into interesting things when the fic calls for it. I also think I can do cool things with character voice? At least, I always want to try to be interesting with that.

17. What are your writing weaknesses?

I am very bad at drafting, which is to say I often don't and I get frustrated and discouraged when I can't articulate myself the way I want on the first pass - which is particularly sore spot for me when I always feel like I'm trying to do things very intentionally with character voice and interpretation. I never feel super confident with my dialogue either. I'll write internal monologues for several thousand words but the minute two characters need to have an honest to god conversation I forget how human speech works. I'm also just bad at being concise. I really struggle to just let things stand, it is very hard for me to do those "200 words" writing prompt challenges because I'll start on one concept and my brain branches into a million other places this could go with a lot of detail and intersecting relevance and it can be so so hard for me to kill my darlings.

18. Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language in fic?

I think there's a due diligence required when writing for and in languages you, yourself, don't speak. Google translate isn't necessarily a viable solution to your multi-lingual needs, which I think everyone knows so its not like that's a bold stance. Seek out native speakers, ask for feedback, etc. When its my own work I try not to overly complicate the matter, if all parties in the fiction understand the language I'm going to keep writing in the language of the fic itself. There's a fandom I'm a part of that, in canon, uses German as a proxy language for a fantasy language - which is a language I am conversationally fluent in - and even then I find myself hesitant to just indulge in peppering in German words and phrases because that's just, in my experience, not how of multilingual people use language. Authenticity sort of matters in that regard, and there's a weird artificial presentational-ness to just jamming vocabulary words of other languages into dialogue or text that isn't justified by the character or the conversation itself. idk where I'm going with this.

19. First fandom you wrote for?

Weeaboo past revealed: I'm pretty sure it was KHR but I cannot be sure anymore.

20. Favorite fic you’ve written?

This fluctuates based on which one I'm less mad about when I think about it retrospect on any given day, but I think UNTITLED stands as a testament to me writing in long(ish) form, something I've never done before, and was where I really learned a lot about character voice and how to use it. There's plenty I think I'd change or edit now (honestly, was talking to a friend about making a director's cut of some of the chapters of the whole MH series) but it was a big undertaking and I met a lot of really excellent people through the writing and response to that particular fic.

A chat with Noah Schnapp, the 11-year-old Montrealer who voices Charlie Brown in The Peanuts Movie

'I listened to as much as I could find online to get the voice right. Winning the role took a lot of hard work'

Noah Schnapp, the 11-year-old actor, son of former Montrealers Karine and Mitchell Schnapp, was selected to provide the pipes for the ever-flappable Charlie Brown in The Peanuts Movie after an extensive hunt. For good reason: his take is dead-on. It turns out that wasn’t accidental.

“In preparing for my recording audition, my mom told me to YouTube the old Peanuts Thanksgiving and Christmas specials to hear how Charlie Brown speaks,” the articulate Schnapp says in a phone interview from his family’s New York City base. “So I listened to as much as I could find online to get the voice right. Winning the role took a lot of hard work, but good fortune as well. There were a lot of other talented kids up for the part, too.”

After studying the character, Schnapp says, he can relate to Charlie Brown in a lot of ways. “Charlie never gives up, and I try never to give up either. And my dog Spaghetti is a bit like Snoopy — a real wise guy.”

Schnapp already has an impressive resumé — moviegoers can catch him in Steven Spielberg’s new Bridge of Spies, and will soon be able to see him in the indie feature, We Only Know So Much, based on the book of the same title.

He is commuting between New York and Atlanta, where he is in the midst of shooting Stranger Things, a supernatural thriller series for Netflix.

And he spent a portion of last spring in Park City, Utah, where he took part in the Sundance Directors Lab and played the lead in director Brent Green’s Untitled Loveless Fable. No surprise, Schnapp was the youngest person invited to the event, which was also attended by such heavies as Robert Redford and Ed Harris.

To top it all off, he was just listed in Variety’s Youth Impact Report as a rising star under 21 to watch out for.

Pretty heady stuff for a kid who only started acting in community theatre three years ago.

Schnapp plays the son of Tom Hanks’s negotiator character in Bridge of Spies, and is most convincing as a kid who’s concerned about a Soviet nuclear retaliation at the height of the Cold War. He dutifully learns the ludicrous duck-and-cover technique should a missile strike while he’s at school, and keeps his bathtub full of water should it strike while he’s at home.

“I have to be honest and admit that before I started working on that project, I actually didn’t know much about that period or who they (Hanks and Spielberg), were,” Schnapp says. “But you have to understand that I was only nine at the time.

“However, when we started pre-production, I watched most of their movies. Then I went: ‘Wow!’ I hadn’t realized how big and how important they were.”

He was particularly struck by Hanks’s manner.

“He’s just such a selfless, generous actor,” Schnapp marvels. “In most of his movies, he’s usually playing the hero and good guy, which is what he really is. He would always be holding on to my shoulder (during shooting), and putting me into the spotlight. And not just me — he was always trying to make everyone else shine, too. It was really such a great experience working with him and Steven Spielberg.”

Schnapp is nothing if not determined. Because of his lack of experience, he figured he was a long shot to land the roles in The Peanuts Movie and Bridge of Spies.

“It was kind of crazy — those were some of my first auditions,” he recalls. “I was very excited, but I didn’t really think I could get the work in Peanuts. Still, I really, really wanted it, because I knew I could do it. And I got it.

“It was the same thing for Bridge of Spies. It was crazy, too. Then I just started getting more and more roles.”

Apart from Hanks, he’s had some solid parental figures watching his back when he’s on the job. In We Only Know So Much, Jeanne Tripplehorn plays his mom, while Winona Ryder takes on that role in Stranger Things.

The Sundance Directors Lab was a great learning experience. “There were about 200 directors, actors and screenwriters. I learned that it was OK to experiment with scenes and improvise new lines. We were like a big family — everyone became my friend.”

Though he didn’t start acting until he was eight, Schnapp says he caught the bug two years earlier.

“After I saw Annie on Broadway, I came out of the show crying, because I wanted to be on that stage. Then when I watched TV, I just knew I wanted to be that person in the TV, too.”

31 Days Rammstein Challenge - Day 26: Favourite Pre-Rammstein Photo

Picking a favourite pre-Rammstein photo is very hard. I am generally fond of photos. Many of the old ones are of bad quality, but for me, that's part of history. That's probably one of the reasons why I dislike AI editing so much. Sharpness of a photo, where an AI has guessed what a person is supposed to look like, does not equal quality. It sends me straight into the uncanny valley.

That said, there are many great photos from the pre-Rammstein eras as well. Unfortunately, very few of them are of Oliver Riedel. I guess it comes as no surprise that I picked a photo of him for this challenge: The Inchtabokatables by Richter.

This photo is spectacular as it's one of very few photos of Oliver with more than a tiny bit of hair on his head and no facial hair. As it was taken before the release of White Sheep, the first album Oliver participated on, he is most likely 21 years old in the photo. I love the few glimpses that exist of him pre-Rammstein.

I'd like to add a few honourable mentions: 1) The one Richard Z. Kruspe graciously shared with us on Instagram just after Till Lindemann turned 60. Seeing as I work mainly on an ipad, for personal art it's just a sea of 'untitled artwork'

For commissions it's usually the name of the commissioner! At least the first one. Since I 'organize' my commissions by doing nothing but looking at my inbox, like a really responsible full time artist would.

okay this varies wildly. Like the previous ask, a lot of time I'll just have trash teli on in the background. Or a youtuber like Markiplier, Jacksepticeye, and the Game Grumps. But if I really need to focus on a big complex piece or I'm just getting into what I'm drawing, I'll generally slap on my noise cancelling headphones. What I listen to varies even more wildly.

Big fan of Glass animals, Billie Eilish, Red Hot Chili Peppers, CORPSE, anything Bear McCreary but specifically GOW soundtracks, Big Wild, the Death Stranding playlist, Zelda and Chill, Fleetwood Mac, the Hades soundtrack, Foster the People... I could go on forever.

Trafalgar Law: Verses, Wishlist, Fave Ships, etc.

♡ Main (Canon): Corresponding with the events of the anime/manga, canon-compliant. Interactions set between Sabaody and Zou preferred (my grasp on Wano is pretty poor because I speed-read the entire manga in two months and I retained very little from most of it. To revisit at a later date.) Open to exploring pre-Sabaody timeline and I love canon-divergent AUs.

♡ Heartverse: "What If" canon-divergent AU built with @climatact, in which: Bellemere lived, Nami became a marine, Law had an extra year with Cora-san as a child and their travels to find a cure for Law brought them to the East where their paths crossed with Bellemere and her two daughters. A chance encounter on an island in the Grand Line years later upends the trajectory of both of their lives. Tagged: ♡ // verse: heartverse ; || Ships: LawNa ♡

Heartverse series of events: during the 2-year timeskip, Law crosses paths with Marine!Nami on an island in the Grand Line (the first time they’ve seen each other since he visited her island when he was 11.) A mutual attraction/curiosity upon their reunion leads to a one-night-turned-two stay in a fancy hotel, a jewelry store heist that results in Nami leaving her unfulfilling career behind to join his pirate crew, and an unexpected addition to their lives. Following Law’s appointment as a Shichibukai, the two head back to her home in the East until baby Cora-chan makes her appearance. She’s later left in the care of Nojiko and Bellemere while the two travel to Punk Hazard. After the run-in with the Straw Hats, Nami still ends up joining as their navigator and the two, although married, sail on in pursuit of their individual goals.

♡ Tangerine Trysts: A spin-off of a spin-off; another take on Heartverse in which Law and Nami's initial background (meeting as kids, Bellemere living, Nami becoming a marine) stays the same but Law and Nami run into each other on Sabaody, again at Marineford, and carry on an relationship of sorts while she remains a marine. || Ships: LawNa ♡

♡ Currently Untitled Godverse: AU built with @climatact based on a shared appreciation for the tale of Hades & Persephone, ft. Law as the god of the Underworld and Nami as a mortal living in some of the hardest times the mortal realm has ever seen. Tagged: ♡ // godverse tbt ; || Ships: LawNa ♡

♡ Godverse Spin-off: the “closer to the actual tale of Hades and Persephone but still not quite” take. In which a god takes a liking to the pretty mortal woman he met when business brought him to the mortal realm. || Ships: LawNa

Working On (or would like to explore): a BSD verse, maaaaybe a Demon Slayer verse!

Haven't worked out the details yet but I'd love to explore a "Cora-san lived" AU where Law did not hand over Rosinante's message to THE ONE marine he should not have. (FU Vergo.)

Have also been toying with something where Law, possibly in a modern verse or maybe some fantasy/non-OP setting, actually dabbles in trading hearts for a business; i.e. he'll grant a wish but the price is your heart.

Law Wishlist / Ship Stuff:

Opportunities for him to treat/tend to people - scenarios where even if it's not someone he particularly likes, they need advice or medical attention and he's the only one around to provide it.

Middle of the night interactions since Law's sleeping patterns are abysmal. One or both muses waking up from a nightmare? Lots on their mind? Enjoying the quiet?

As much as I love angst and drama and traumatized characters, Law could use some happy times, so I'm always up for exploring what-ifs where any of his lost loved ones survived.

Ships: My favorite Law ship is Law x Nami. I'm always down to write it, but will not force it on any Namis of course. Other ships I'm intrigued by include Law x Zoro, Law x Robin, and Law x Luffy (I generally see Luffy as an aro/ace icon BUT this is literally the only ship I see potential for for him). However, just because something isn't listed here doesn't mean I won't entertain it. I'm basically shipping trash, although I tend not to to ship him with any of his crewmates and will not ship him with Mingo or Cora-san.

Mandatory disclaimer that I love, love, love AUs - if you'd ever be interested in working on one together, whether it's based on a canon-divergent 'what if?' or an entirely new world/story, SHOUT AT ME ABOUT IT. I also love finding ways to interact in each other's verses, so if you have a verses page I'll definitely check it out -- and if you're interested at all in hopping into one of mine, just let me know!
