TL;DR: Fuck The Washington Post! No one should feel forced to be in a relationship with someone who doesn't respect them.
So I'm sure many of you have seen the Washington Post article headline about how gen z men and women are having more disagreements about politics, and how this is bad for marriage.
Now most of what I've seen of it is people making fun of the men. Which is very fair, if they don't respect women then women shouldn't have to put up with them. But I wanted to see if the headline is just clickbait or if it actually thinks that gen z not marring due to differing political ideologies is a problem.
And ya, it does think that.
"This mismatch means that someone will need to compromise. As the researchers Lyman Stone and Brad Wilcox have noted, about 1 in 5 young singles will have little choice but to marry someone outside their ideological tribe. The other option is that they decline to get married at all — not an ideal outcome considering the data showing that marriage is good for the health of societies and individuals alike."
I'm sure it's pretty clear that the person who the article wants to "compromise" is women, right? After all historically women have had to take care of their husbands and be willing to change to make him happy, and we shouldn't change that at all. So of course they need to marry someone who thinks of them as property and want to take away all of their rights, cos if they don't they'll be sad... 😔
"They are working, living and socializing with people who think the same things they do. Particularly on college campuses, a culture of seeking sameness has set up young Americans for disappointment. They expect people to share their own convictions and commitments. But people’s insight and understanding about the world often come from considering alternative perspectives that may at first seem odd or offensive."
Now all admit that considering other perspectives is important, but what do conservatives have to offer that's so important that women have to marry them? Are they going to be happy hearing about how much their husband thinks that anyone not cis white and straight needs to be killed or arrested and that women should shut up and let men do what they want? It's not a bad thing that people want to be with other people like them, forcing yourself to be surrounded by people who either want you dead or submit to their power over you.
Not only all that but the article neglects to say what exactly the differences between liberal and conservative ideologies are, giving off the impression that gen z women are making a big deal over a tiny issue and not telling men who believe they are less than them to fuck off.
No ultimately I'm just some loser on the internet ranting about an article I don't like but if you want to read actual counterarguments to The Washington Post I'll give you a few recommendations.

One thing about me is that I don't form opinions without looking into topics thoroughly
So when I didn't like Donald Trump as President of the United States
I went: Okay, why do I not like him? Is it because of how he's portrayed in the media where I'm from? Is it because of rumors I'd heard?
The answer was yes. Yes, that was why I initially didn't like Donald Trump.
I was okay with that. I didn't actually feel like I needed to defend that.
But then, the morons came.
They came like a tsunami. They surrounded the world, and the United States, and even my country.
And so that left me with two choices.
Argue with these people but get thrown off whenever they'd say something even remotely factual that you couldn't properly refute because you hadn't looked into it properly...
Or do proper research on the matter.
I chose the latter, because, as anyone who has ever met me in their entire life even for a brief, agonizing second would know, that is who I am.
So I did my research. I did a ton of research.
I read interviews. I watched The Apprentice (all seasons and spinoffs). I watched the debates. And eventually, I watched his documentary, too.
I sat back, having retained all of this information with a sour look on my face, my glass of red wine in hand, and thought....
Well. I was right.
Because I was. I was right. I was right from the moment I first heard him speak, that he was an entire fucking idiot. A cheetoh in an expensive suit. A racist. A misogynist. A liar. A cheat. A poor business man.
However.
One thing researching all of that taught me, was something that has benefitted me ever since. Every time I go out drinking. Every time I meet someone with different opinions than my own.
And that was the fact that I, the person who hates Donald Trump more than fucking anything in the world, knows Donald Trump better than his supporters do.
And that is the most amazing feeling.
Because you can argue until the end of time with someone less intelligent than you (Donald Trump supporters) but nothing shuts them up more than when you can throw out facts and moments that they do not know because they did not do the research but it's believable enough for them to realize it's true.
Even a simple question like "Oh, so did you watch his documentary?"
Most of them will say NO. They didn't.
And then you get to smile condescendingly, and say, "Well I did. And did you know he got off paying taxes for forty years in New York City to build the Trump Tower? Did you know he got money from his dad to build it? Did you know he's never even experienced an average way of living and so he cannot relate even for a second to what your life is like because he's never had a normal job because he was born rich? And did you know he used to sexually harrass women all around him and even said his own daughter was sexy? And did you know that he pretended to be someone else while talking about himself for an interview where he was quoted to be absolutely fantastic in every aspect of the word and that Madonna wanted to hook up with him? And did you know that back in the 90's he did an interview where he said if he was ever to run for President, he would run as a Republican, because they believe everything you'll tell them? Because I do. Because I cared enough to research him. Is this who you're rooting for?"
And so, the story is never ending.
Because every single privileged, power hungry man that I encounter, that I am absolutely disgusted with, I must research.
I need to know. I want the facts. I want the receipts. I want the words out of their god damn mouths so I can use them against anyone who thinks they know fucking shit all about the topic.
It goes for Jeffrey Epstein too. And Harvey Weinstein. And Woody Allen.
And it goes for others, less devastating but equally as disappointing men, too.
Because you should not speak on a topic you have not delved into, researched, and gotten a thorough understanding of.
Because if you do not do your research on a topic... Then you're just not smart enough to be included in the conversation.

Every time I hear the phrases "Ukraine is not our responsibility" "Don't poke the bear" etc A Certain Type of Person comes to mind.Y'all know who I'm talking about:

If this, then usually also this:
(as very helpfully illustrated by @ standupfight73 )
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Waaah waaah America First! Liberty! Freedom of the people! By freedom I mean I'll have all the guns, no taxes, permission to lynch immigrants and gay people on the street, and freedom to die of and spread fully preventable diseases because I refuse to get vaccinated! I saw a rainbow in the sky yesterday, I am being oppressed here, why doesn't anyone care?😭🇺🇲
Giant self-centred ill-mannered toddlers is what they are🙄 No wonder they have and tankies agree on the same Russian propaganda, they have much in common in terms of critical thinking skills. Just change a couple of buzzwords and flags and they'll believe exactly the same stupid shit.🧲
Wish they'd kept it to themselves, I don't want to be scrolling through 20 idiotic posts like this every time I look in the Ukraine tag.

Just unlocked a memory. For Halloween or something when my old best friend and I were fourteen, she dressed like Dean Winchester and I dressed like Sam. I made us both fake FBI badges that we put in our wallets and we carried them around and showed them to people all over school and questioned them.

i love that we’re virtually powerless about the fact that the two most prominent candidates for U.S. president genuinely are horrible picks. like not in the hillary vs trump “these people are evil” kind of way. but like. trump has like 92 charges against him, he was impeached, and he participated in an insurrection while he was president. and biden has dementia. like these are two people who should not be elected for anything, let alone president of the U.S.

man I absolutely Knew my dad would end up falling head first for the zionist propaganda so it wasn't even Remotely worth tryna talk to him about current affairs but it is so goddamn frustrating to be proven right... 🙃
I tried to talk to him about the state of palestine Years back (somewhere around 2018-19 I think) and admittedly I didn't have all the facts then but I could tell I was fighting a losing battle even then facts or no facts because my dad's too busy sucking israel's dick to care when human beings are being subjugated, or even consider that maybe israel Could be in the wrong here. add all the propaganda being shoved down his throat rn and I just know he ended up saying death to palestine with his whole chest. absolute joke of a family I'm in man.

This inbred motherf—ker is the ass clown that assaulted a kid in front of Congress that was trying to ask BOBO a question. He’s also said during the 2020 election that his wife was a witch who could see the future and predicted Biden would unleash the military against MAGAts if Trump didn’t win.
He’s a “celebrity” cop who came to local prominence after doing a few off script racist PSA’s that got him fired. He was actually dismissed from several local police departments for being a racist who beat up alleged perps that already were in handcuffs. He’s also bragged about being an active duty soldier who fought in the Middle East. In fact he was only in the reserves and was never deployed. He also lied about being an officer when he was never promoted beyond sergeant.
This fine Christian is currently on his 4th wife (the witch). He has cheated on all four of them. His 1st wife went missing after he divorced her and was later found dead. He was widely believed to have murdered her but it couldn’t be proved. He owes over $140,000 in child support which he refuses to pay and was caught on tape joking about it after he was elected to Congress. He’s been taken to court over it but has not been forced to pay up by local Republican judges and has openly threatened violence on his exes.
Although dumb as a bag of rocks he is on the powerful Homeland Security and Oversight and Reform Committees. He hasn’t passed any legislation and spends all his time ranting about the deep state, election denial, and various Qanon conspiracies. He also says all Federal law enforcement will be fired and executed for “staging” the Jan 6th Insurrection and blaming innocent Trump supporters.

AITA for ditching a long-term friend?
I (35F) had a friend (S, 33F) for years. We bonded the first night we met. We had ups an downs, and went everywhere together. I helped her kick her bf out after he tried to hit her and helped her through two miscarriages. She helped me through a family member death and a career change. We would speak almost every day, for hours.
She was always slightly more conservative than me. When 2016 rolled around, she supported Trump. I didn't like that, but it wasn't my place to bitch about it to her, it was her decision.
By 2020, she'd changed. Idk how it happened but she went from slightly conservative Christian who loved school and being a nurse and had friends who were LGBT+ (myself included), to deadnaming trans patients, refusing to do a blood draw on a patient after she said it was a prerequisite for an abortion, forcing patients to pray with her, even when they and their families spoke out against it, and bugging her coworkers to pray with her. She got fired from the hospital and was completely unable to hold down a job after that, and went through about 6 jobs that year, getting fired from them all. She got with a guy (B, 32M) and he is a... Well, he is a damn nut. Flat earther, antivaxxer, anti- Department of Education, anti-cell phone, thought bluetooth was turning kids trans, and that covid is 100% a hoax. Absolutely bonkers. But she was smitten, so I supported her, barely.
It's important to note that I backed away from her a bit after she was fired from the hospital. We were only speaking once every few weeks at that point.
Shortly after she got with B, my nephew was born. My nephew is half Mexican, half white. She called him "cute for a half n*g" because she thought my SIL is black. This blew me away because she's half Mexican. I told her off and distanced myself even further.
In 2021, she was a huge supporter of Jan 6th. She LAUGHED when that one cop killed himself. I stopped talking to her completely after that. Deleted her contact info and forgot she existed for almost 2 years.
Cut to October of this year, and she calls me. I didn't recognize her #. She and B are getting married! And she wants me to be a bridesmaid!!! Yayy! (sarcasm). She told me a long-winded variation of "I know we haven't talked for a bit but I promise I'm not as bonkers as I was, I think I let Facebook suck me in, and I'm sorry."
So, I let her back in. Not emotionally, mind you. She's not the woman I once knew anymore. I don't tell her where our house is (my partner and I moved while S and I weren't speaking), and I didn't tell her what car I drove. I didn't tell her anything about our lives, and kept the conversation solely on her, to try and read her out a bit.
Sure enough, two conversations in she starts ranting about how black people are black because they received the mark of Cain (it's a Christian thing? I guess? Idk I'm not religious) and thus should be avoided because they are inherently "up to no good," and that systemic racism doesn't exist because the US has had a black president.
I roll my eyes, hang up the phone, block her number, and end it, permanently, right there. I received a few odd texts from a number I didn't recognize, probably B's phone, so I just blocked that number and deleted them without reading most of them.
Cue our mutual friends. 🙄
She misses you! People can have differing opinions and still be friends! Why are you being so closed minded? She told us you yelled at her! 😭😭😭
Lol. I didn't say a word, but whatever.
I'd rather adjust my life to her absence than adjust my morality to her ignorance.
My partner is on my side, they saw her change, too. But our mutual friends are still upset. I shared some the racist and sexist text convos between me and S, and it's like they hadn't even considered my side of the situation. One is on my side now, the other two are still questioning how I can throw away a 6 year friendship over "differing politics."
So, Tumblr, AITA?
What are these acronyms?

okay so-
on the discord i was scrolling through past convos in a desperate search for a link that i've seen before, and i came across another one of your and fsinger's aus starring Michael👀
It was like a Kronos Wins/Time-Travels AU where Michael, Thalia, Bianca, Nico, and Hazel are the MCs and I was like !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
and then when the first main plotpoint was basically Michael going "SAVE MY DAD" my FIRST thought was that one Puss In Boots: The Last Wish scene;
Michael, about Apollo: I will save you!
Every other god, suffering in Tartarus: Save us too!
Michael: ...if it's convenient!
like. gnawing on this au rn. i gnaw on all of your aus. this one and the Lee Lives/Apollo Becomes Mortal/BotL Au are officially my favs (Eclipse at this point is basically canon to me lol)
but yeah. I know this au has a BUNCH of beloved characters die, which would have admittedly upset me like, three years ago, but now?
now i merely eagerly rub my hands as my brain imagines how this scenario goes down eheheehhe
Ah yes, this AU! Not one I've thought about in a while, but still a fun one!
Fun fact, for you if you missed the origin of it, and also for anyone else who might be reading this and hearing about this AU for the first time - this is an AU spinoff of my AU fic Tears Will Not Wash Away Your Crimes, where defeated!Kronos from canon timetravels back to the start of TLT to take Michael out before he could become the threat that saves Olympus (see: my long rants on how by being the one to realise Williamsburg Bridge needed to break, Michael stopped Kronos winning on the first day of the siege). In that fic, he succeeds in making Luke kill Michael, and while the fic never goes on to state it, it does become an alternate timeline where Kronos does, in fact, win (due to various factors such as Luke's betrayal not being discovered because Percy wasn't there to survive being poisoned and reveal that he was the traitor, etc. and also Kronos knowing how the demigods/gods operated and basically having the cheat code of being able to squash anything they try before they try it).
But also I am a perpetual Michael!lives fan, so with the enabling of @fearlessinger, as you mentioned, another AU spawned off of this, whereby when Luke carelessly mentioned Apollo by name, he caught Apollo's attention and the god himself turned up to whisk Michael away to safety. In the end, though, it doesn't stop Kronos from winning, because no-one knows enough to trump what Kronos knows. Hence, Kronos wins!AU.
But then!
There are some key changes that go down because of Kronos' prior knowledge... Change #1: Thalia is not restored by the Golden Fleece. Kronos did this because he wanted her as his host, but he tried that last time and it failed - he won't try again. Change #2: The di Angelos do not leave the Lotus Casino. No Thalia in the running suggests that Hades may not have bothered to pull his own children back into the prophecy race - if he really wanted them to be feasible as prophecy children, he'd have brought them out when Percy was claimed, as that would make Bianca a similar age to Percy and therefore viable as an alternative. Bringing them out a year or two later makes his kids younger than both Thalia and Percy and doesn't actually make sense, unless it was a response to being the only Big Three god with no kids involved... Change #3: Daedalus doesn't die, because Nico isn't around Change #4: All our Greek Hero demigods (and the Hunters) are dead, barring the above, and Michael, who was kept safe on Delos the whole time.
And these changes all line up quite neatly into a ridiculously large plot, based on the following consequences:
Consequence #1: the gods are thrown down into Tartarus Consequence #2: the triumvirate's deal with Kronos for their support involved getting Apollo as their prize so Caligula can still claim the sun god spot and Commodus gets his revenge. Apollo is passed to them, instead of Tartarus Consequence #3: Michael is rather pissed off about all of this
What happens after that, well. Imagine Michael, no longer trapped on Delos because the twins aren't there, making his way to Delphi. Imagine Phoebe initially reclaiming Delphi, before Kronos realises she was never on her side and instead release Python to reclaim it; Michael has enough time to speak with his grandmother, but only very little before he's forced to flee into the Labyrinth to hide.
Imagine Daedalus trying to atone for all the deaths he's caused by keeping this one demigod still alive, hidden in the Labyrinth while Michael tries to work out how the fuck he's supposed to save the gods, but never even considering not doing it ("the gods", of course, meaning "Apollo, mostly").
Imagine Apollo weakened, but still able to make dream contact. Apollo not being able to dissuade Michael from trying to save him. Apollo with nothing left to lose except his one son he can't protect himself, so he gives Michael knowledge, things to help him stay alive.
Knowledge, like how the daughter of Zeus is a tree but isn't dead, can be healed by that golden fleece (Percy, Annabeth and Grover retrieved it still, but the tree was not sick and so it was never hung upon it). Knowledge, like how there are two more Big Three kids trapped in a place where time doesn't move.
(Imagine Apollo chained up and forced to be his own oracle as his divinity is drained away. Imagine a little girl with sickle-rings on her fingers being drawn to him anyway, this captive god of the Beast. Imagine the god that still wants to save a child, if only he had the chance)
Imagine Michael healing Thalia with the fleece, the pair of them fleeing from the remains of camp (the remains of Michael's home) as Kronos realises he's there. Imagine Michael and Thalia edging into a casino that's too bright, too jovial compared to their broken world, and pulling two younger demigods back into the timestream. Imagine lurking in the Labyrinth, in the Underworld and discovering a dead girl who still remembers when she shouldn't.
Imagine these demigods plotting, scheming, desperate, and the power of three children of the Underworld combined, pooling their powers together until they can go anywhere the shadows touch.
Imagine them rescuing a god, and the little girl coaxed along with them.
And when they've got one god back... it's only a matter of time before they get the rest.
(And when Kronos discovers it's Michael, again, that foiled him in the end... Well. Some Fates can't be denied)

Hello I was just wondering if you've seen Imani Barbarin talk about not voting (https://x.com/imani_barbarin/status/1747723080917492020?s=46&t=55h0eHrgY7FtQI8ej54maw)? I saw you reblog the post about "not waiting for the morally pure candidate" and I think that's a willful misrepresentation of what Gen Z is feeling
We've not seen Biden address ANY of the things the post claims (climate change is the only one I remember without scrolling back) but we have seen him approve more oil licenses than trump, drop more bombs than trump, support a genocide, abandon disabled people and any Covid mitigations during the second highest surge since the start of the pandemic (with less testing so odds are things r even worse than we can tell), bring back student debt, etc etc
As a Gen Z'r, I genuinely want to understand how y'all can believe "no vote is a vote for fascism" when both candidates are horrendous? Why is the onus on us and not the politicians to do better instead of pointing fingers and saying "at least we're better than Trump" when that is categorically untrue?
I'm sorry if this is too rant-y I'm just so furious and frustrated with my perception of older voters' complacency with being given utter shit instead of organizing for better
I am trying very hard to be reasoned and understanding about this- bearing in mind that we want the same things in the end and I'mnot jazzed for Biden either -when it's extremely, EXTREMELY obvious to me that Trump is worse.
Like.
If he gets elected there might not be another election. The man was theoretically willing to use military force to quell protests if he lost the 2020 election (why he didn't, I don't know; but I'm not willing to give him that chance a second time).
Trump has called himself a dictator, proudly, in the same breath as saying "we're closing the border and we're drilling, drilling, drilling." Biden does NOT remotely have a perfect record on either of those things- he was locked into some construction of the border wall by how the funds had already been allocated by Congress during the Trump administration, but not everything he's done in relation to it, which also pisses me off. As for the oil thing, it's a bit more complicated than it seems on the surface: not as simple as "he doesn't actually care about the environment" even as it's definitely not a good move or in line with his stated climate goals.
As for those climate goals, I found this interesting article that rates key areas of climate action and how they've fared during the Biden administration. It was updated in January, and it is not sycophantically uncritical across the board. But that is LEAGUES more progress than we'd get under a system of "drilling, drilling, drilling" with absolutely no concessions to the climate crisis at all.
His handling of the situation in Palestine...yeah, I struggle with that, too. I know he's been trying to talk their leaders down, to some degree, but it's not nearly enough to me. And I STRONGLY disagree with us selling them weapons. However, Trump's statements on the matter- calling for a ban on Gazan refugees in the US, calling pro-Palestinian protestors "barbarians," and saying he'd revoke the student visa of anyone he deemed "anti-American" -makes me believe that letting him get into power is not something my conscience would allow, vis a vis the fate of the Palestinian people. Because it would be exponentially worse.
I also think the material good that has happened under the Biden administration has been...MASSIVELY under-publicized. Because like. He HAS addressed things. Lots of things, in fact.
this article from last year was too early to include pardoning thousands of people federally convicted of simple marijuana possession (again, not perfect, but still very good), setting new rules to limit methane emissions, capping prices for at least some major insulin producers, partial student loan debt forgiveness (tried to do more, but got hamstrung by Republicans), cancelling oil leases granted by Trump in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge (not enough given the leases HE granted, but it's not nothing either), and much more I'm sure I'm overlooking. Because, again, nobody's been talking about it. It sells more news subscriptions to feed readers an endless stream of what Biden is doing wrong- which I am not denying! -leaving people with the dangerous impression that both sides are the same. Republicans would not have done any of this. That's just the truth of the matter.
Look, I would like a better option, too. I would love to actually LIKE a presidential candidate in my lifetime. I'd love one who wouldn't make concessions to the interests of selfish, heartless people with ledgers where their sense of human compassion should be. I just don't see that person coming to power between now and November.
And I'll take someone who is Standard US Politician Slimy but at least makes some improvements (unfortunately, I doubt there's anyone with a chance of winning in less than a year who doesn't support Israel to some degree, since this country have a long history of that) over someone who might actually stage a right-wing military coup, and who would kill me and other marginalized people himself if he thought it would get him more fame and fortune.
Some people say their conscience won't let them vote Biden. I can't tell them what to do. But if he gets the Democratic nomination, my conscience wouldn't let me do anything else.

i feel like people should stop looking to celebs for political advice. theyre entertainers. and will i completely support palestine, its not chris' job to educate, its his job to entertain and act and make money. of course, him not publicly supporting palestine is sad, but so many a-listers are losing jobs because of supporting palestine, and while that's wrong... it doesnt change the fact that its happeneing. also meeting the president, no matter who is it, is just a really cool thing to say that you did so i get why he would want to meet the president. he cant exactly spit on his shoes or steal his shoelaces, can he?
You do realize that Chris Evans has a political platform called ASP that he uses to "educate" and that is why he met the President, right?
He put himself in the middle of it all. Stop defending him to people who think he's full of shit. He's married to someone who looks like a minor and who has clear racist behavior in her past and now he's shaking hands with an admitted zionist while simultaneously not having said a word about Palestine other than doing a zoom on his POLITICAL platform about the "Israel-Hamas War".
He made his bed, it's time to fucking lie in it. I can absolutely judge him and call him out for behavior he willingly did. He didn't have to go into politicis or rant about Trump or start a political site but guess what? HE DID. So anything he is or isn't saying or talking about is DELIBERATE.
He has been dead silent all year when it comes to womens rights, lgbtq rights and now the genocide in Gaza. And what's one of the first things he does to "relaunch" his site? Shake hands with the President who has proudly stated that he is a zionist and will support Israel no matter what.
And let me remind you: he didn't shake hands with Donald Trump when he launched the site. He said in an interview he wasnt upset that Trump refused to talk to him.
It says everything you need to know. Stop defending a 42 year old man as if he is not aware of his actions and the consequences of them. Get a grip.
He is not who you imagine in your head. He has shown time and again who he is. Please start believing him.
I am so sick of people excusing his behavior, the excuses are fucking infinite, yall will let him get away with anything just because you want a chance to fuck him, I guess.

Biden is just as dangerous as Trump, and I can't help but wonder if his attack on Yemen will make vote-blue-even-for-nazis nuts realize it.
At least 72,000 people displaced in Lebanon
Almost 2 million displaced in Gaza
Lebanon, Syria, and Gaza bombed by Israel
Over 30,000 Gazan people murdered
The UN Security Council ordered that more aid be allowed in. We know Israel isn't doing this, but Biden keeps giving unconditional support.
Biden funded all of the above, bypassing congressional approval TWICE and ignoring the people to rush weapons to Israel
Peaceful antigenocide protesters are arrested and labeled antisemitic, and Biden encourages this. His own administration likened proPalestine protesters to Nazis
Rashida Tlaib censured and people fired for publicly condemning genocide. Again, he doesn't defend freedom of speech.
Universities ban proPalestine organizations. Again no condemnation of the restriction of freedom of speech.
He attacked Iraq
He attacked Yemen attacked, and Biden again didn't get congressional approval
Just because he doesn't go into Twitter rants doesn't mean he's less dangerous than Trump. He has made it clear that he will start WWIII and ignore any checks and balances that would slow him down.
