film reviews: The Irony of Fate (Soviet film)
The Irony of Fate is a 1976 Soviet romantic comedy television film directed by Eldar Ryazanov.
Synopsis: An introduction describes how the mass-production of bland concrete housing blocks and uniformity of city planning during the Brezhnev era has made all cities in the Soviet Union look the same, with identical buildings on identically-named streets boasting standard apartments filled with standard furniture and front doors fitted with standard locks.
In Moscow on New Year’s Eve, 36-year-old Zhenya goes with his friends to the bathhouse, where they all get drunk. Friend Pavlik needs to catch a flight to Leningrad (St. Petersburg), but when they get to the airport no one can remember who’s supposed to be on the flight, and the friends mistakenly put Zhenya on the plane instead. Zhenya disembarks in Leningrad airport, takes a taxi to his address, and is dropped off at an identical apartment building to his own. He takes the lift up to his apartment number, puts his key in the lock, which fits, and goes inside and falls asleep in the apartment of a complete stranger.
Nadya comes home to find Zhenya asleep in her bed. She tries to get rid of him before her fiancé Ippolit walks and sees Zhenya. He believes Nadya has been cheating on him and storms out in fury. Through various incidents Nadya and Zhenya are repeatedly thrown together, and though they try to explain things to their respective partners both refuse to believe them. Eventually the two realize they are the only ones who believe their story. Slowly their mutual loathing turns into liking each other, and they consider becoming a couple but change their mind, and Zhenya flies back home to Moscow. But after thinking it over Nadya changes her mind and flies to Moscow herself, and goes to Zhenya’s apartment building. She tries her key in the lock, which fits, and opens the door to his apartment.
Review: No. The film is just over three hours long in total, and had no business being as long as it is. The scenes go on forever, and I stopped watching 50 minutes in. The film’s premise is a funny one, but the humor of the film is more subdued compared to American films, which would play the action much zanier; but, in contrast to some Soviet “comedy” films, this is a Soviet comedy that is actually funny. But the film is unbearably slow and the scenes go on forever. I can see why Russian audiences like this film, but I don’t agree. Don’t bother watching it.

There’s just something about how by the end for Arthur to play the role he needed to play , be the once and future king who would unite Albion and rule justly, he had to learn to be gentle to be softer and kinder and more compassionate .
And he had to learn it from Merlin . The person who in order to become Arthur’s protector had to learn to be Ruthless . He had to be cold blooded , merciless and vicious to keep Arthur safe .

The last tribute alive receives a life of ease back home, and their district will be showered with prizes, largely consisting of food. All year, the Capitol will show the winning district gifts of grain and oil and even delicacies like sugar while the rest of us battle starvation.

Writing is hard, so instead I organized my Otohan playlist; loosely follows the vague backstory I made up for them:
A cursed child raised beneath the warped teachings of the Duskmaven, coming into their power during the Apex War, climbing the ranks and misguidedly fighting in the Matron's name only to be abandoned and condemned for their atrocities, embracing the storm, seeking vengeance, and finding the Vanguard, before finally meeting their end on Ruidus.
Some of my favorite songs:
The Gift of the Rose / Isabella Summers, Elise McQueen
I Didn't Ask For This / Beth Crowley
Apprentice of Death / Mors Principium Est
Ruthless / Bookish Songs Collective, et al
Seven Devils / Florence + the Machine
No More Heroes / Unleash the Archers
Become the Beast / Karliene
Witness the Masterpiece / Ganyos
Witness the Masterpiece in particular is just a whole vibe:
Gracefully
I've carved my path from moments to eternity
Paid the sacrifice
Fulfilled the prophecies
Kingdoms that oppose me turn to dust
So fan the flames
I'll walk through fire
Cut me down
I'll still go higher
Save you praise
I'll take the honor
Glory and legacy
This is my destiny
Witness the masterpiece

So, I was having a late night walk and while walking I was listening to Alan watts discuss "what is love". Then, I stumbled upon this scene; a bouquet of flowers abandoned on the sidewalk. The irony of encountering such a sight while pondering the nature of love was not lost on me :)

FIRST THREE PAGES OF ALTAN'S BACKSTORY
Buryatia, Ivolginsky Datsan Khambyn Sume
*Altan, Yuma, their mother and grandmother speak in Buryatian here, Russian translation is in square boxes and I took them as a base for English translation
Mother: ...now take three sips and pour the rest on your head.
Yuma: Hey, are you finished?
Mom: Not yet. Wouldn't it be a shame to leave without touching the wishing stone?
Altan: Wishing stone? I want to go to the wishing stone!
Yuma: What kind of stone, Mom?
Grandmother: And where did you get this boldness from?
Yuma: From you, grandma, who else?
Grandmother: Well, I guess you are right.
Mother: According to legend, Green Tara touched this stone and left her palm print on it. If a person touches it, asking for the fulfillment of his most cherished wishes, they will surely come true. You need to stand on this line, close your eyes and go straight towards it.
Altan: Will my wishes not come true now?
