Worthless - Chapter 19 - Part 1

I wanted to go check on Asher.

Riley said it was probably nothing, just a need for sleep after a full day with Fallon but it didn't keep me from worrying.

I couldn't do much about it though.

I was on my way to Rickerson territory with Alpha Eric and Thalia, Eric's third.

We were going to 'discuss' territory boundaries.

In reality, this was Murphy's last chance.

If he didn't take it... well, his pack's going to get a lot smaller.

We pulled up to what they called a pack-house.

The paint was dirty and peeling and the roof dipped.

Since Murphy became Alpha, the pack has gone downhill.

Their numbers have dwindled, either by death or desertion.

No one really wanted anything to do with the pack.

They were just a pain in the ass.

"Stop looking so glum, you'll get back to your boyfriend by morning," Thalia smirked at my red cheeks before getting out.

I followed, sending her a glare and took my place by Alpha Eric as we waited.

Asher and I haven't actually defined what we were.

He knows that we're mates but it's like he doesn't feel the full effects of the bond.

Heck, I want to tear his clothes off and take him every time I see him.

Obviously, I don't but it worries me that he doesn't feel similar.

"Hey Thalia, what's today's date?"

"November sixth. Why?"

I shook my head, as two pack members came out to meet us.

"Uh, nothing. Just wondering."

We went quiet as they approached, their bodies lumbering as they walked.

Both were male, neither good-looking.

The one on the left looked like he lost a fight with a cheese grater.

The other one's face was puffed up.

They stopped a few feet away.

After a few moments of intimidation gone wrong, Mr Cheese Grater spoke.

"We're to lead you to Alpha Murphy. Any hostile actions will be seen as a declaration of war and the rest of the pack will immediately descend upon you. You are to be quiet and do not wander off."

With that, he turned and began walking, Mr Puffy staying behind to take up the rear.

I felt the eyes of many wolves on us as we made our way through the smelly, roach-infested home.

I could feel Alpha Eric and Thalia's disgust.

Thalia's lip curled.

'They could at least try and make themselves look presentable.'

I nodded but didn't say anything.

Mr Cheese Grater and Mr Puffy were getting nervous, their bodies tensing the closer we got to a door.

Mr Cheese Grater motioned for us to some, swallowing loudly as he approached the door, hand raised to knock.

"Alpha, that Blackwood guy and his subordinates are here."

My jaw clenched at his description and I could see Thalia's anger.

Even Alpha Eric, ever the calm one, was hard pressed to contain his annoyance.

Mr Cheese Grater nodded once and reached for the knob.

He glanced our way as he turned it, the handle squeaking in protest. The door was even louder as it swung open, revealing a small, unclean room.

Sitting behind a large desk in a stereotypical bad guy pose was Murphy.

The only thing missing would be a fluffy white cat.

I kept my face in check as we walked in, not wanting to increase the tension by smiling.

He didn't stand as we entered, his bored expression increasing my anger.

I looked to Alpha Eric but he just gestured to the chairs.

Murphy looked less thrilled that we were here than we were but now that we were sitting right if front of him, he gave us his full attention.

"Well, what do you want?"

Thalia growled at his rudeness, about to stand when Alpha Eric replied.

"You know why we are here, Murphy. A few Alphas and myself, have concluded that it's your pack that has been trespassing. We've told you multiple times to stop them. This is your last warning. If you don't take it, well... we will put a stop to it ourselves."

The bored expression returned as he rested his chin in his hand.

"That's not the only reason you're here is it?"

Alpha Eric's lips thinned, he was getting annoyed.

"No. We're also here about a human."

I stiffened.

Asher's father or who we had thought was his father.

That man was at the top of my kill list.

He was probably at the top of Liam and Rowan's too.

Asher didn't seem to care about finding him but I think it's just a front.

The man did kill his mother which caused the death of his biological father.

Anyone would want a little revenge after that, right?

"Given your Beta mutt's expression, I assume this is personal."

I snapped my gaze to him, letting him glimpse exactly how much anger I was feeling, anger that could easily be directed towards him if he didn't watch his mouth.

"It is, this human has harmed one of our own, my Beta's mate."

Alpha Eric sent him an image of the man from what he pulled from Riley and Fallon.

Asher had refused but none of us blamed him.

I'm sure no one would want to think about that man if he did those things to you.

Interest suddenly flared in Murphy's eyes.

"I'll keep an eye out. If I find anything, you'll be hearing from me."

He waved us out, cocking his head as if he was being talked to through his pack link.

Eric hesitated before nodding and standing up. We did the same and followed him out the door.

Mr Cheese Grater and Mr Puffy were waiting and took up the same positions to lead us out.

'I didn't think it would go over that quickly,' I said after a length, using the pack link so our escorts wouldn't be able to hear.

Eric nodded in agreement.

'Well, I don't really know what to make of it myself. Murphy seemed quite interested in the human. It's possible that he'll deliver a corpse instead of the man as is his style.'

Thalia chuckled darkly, drawing nervous glances from Murphy's henchmen.

'I just want him dead. I don't care if Murphy does the dirty work.'

I nodded as we passed through the front door.

Mr Cheese Grater walked with us halfway, leaving us to get in.

Though they still stood there when we drove off, I knew the Rickerson pack would be following to make sure we left.

“Are you getting tired?”

“Not at all,” Remus hadn’t smiled so much in years. Who would’ve thought him, married? Certainly not himself, that much was true. He could see Hope barely out of the corner of his eye, waltzing carefully with Sirius, both of them laughing as she stumbled her way through it.

Thalia was absolutely stunning and Remus wouldn’t have been able to tell the difference between her and a Greek goddess.

“You’re the one wearing heels,” he pointed out as they swayed to the music. His knee hadn’t bothered him all night, leaving him to focus entirely on his bride.

“I’m sure you’d look amazing in them,” Thalia winked.

“Hah, you would say that,” Remus chuckled, thumbs smoothing against her hips.

Thalia had been the one to propose rather than it being the other way around. They had both enjoyed the slow progression of their relationship, especially with how Thalia’s last marriage had ended in abandonment and so much worse.

“I love you,” he told her and what he meant was I wish my friends could be here to see this.

“And I love you too,” Thalia said gently, and what she meant was I would’ve wanted my sister here to see this.

Headcannon

The parents of Aaron Blackwood

Birth parents: Aaron never knew his birthparents. Not in the conventional way. His parents were lucky enough to get the chance to leave what was in effect a last goodbye using the parental bond.

Thalia Blackwood: Thalia Blackwood was born Thalia Rowanwood to loving parents. Displaying magical potential early her mother, a strong sorceress in her own right was more than capable enough to cater to the early training of her daughter’s ability.

By the time she reached her majority Thalia had grown into a strong independent Lady with an iron grip/control over her magic. Thalia meeting Rowak first when she chose to train as a combat mage the two eventually marrying and pragma bonding after a long friendship.

Thalia owned a rowan wood quarter staff topped with a hunk of Obsidian, she used this as her magic focus.

Thalia tend to prefer a white furred artic wolf form when in safe pack areas and needing to shapeshift. She was an accomplished enough shapeshifter though that she’d regularly assume other wolf forms if needed.

She had grey eyes. Not that Aaron knows

Extensive knowledge of combat magic in the Lupricae style, wasn’t as good a healer.

Always said that Rowak was the holder of her heart. It was a phrase they both used. They were best friends before their relationship went anywhere past that, when they Pragma bonded though the bond between their minds became much stronger than it had already been.

Competent Quarterstaff fighter, underwent the rite of the three wolves alongside Rowak.

Left her son fragments of memory and a deep feeling of love, using what was left of her magical abilities to in essence use this to grant her son more time to prepare to deal with his magical abilities. Her son having active magic potential that would in her mind require training at some point.

Rowak Blackwood: Rowak Blackwood, descendant of a number of Blackwood pack Alpha’s and the founder of the Blackwood pack themselves was born to a quiet family. The Blackwoods as a family rarely liked to play to their position and did what they could to keep their life quiet. This did not stop them from celebrating the fact Rowak turned out to be a Major node telepath though.

Growing up amongst a family with a strong martial history, Rowak jumped at the first opportunity he got to begin to train for beginning training as an enforcer. Excelling in education and in preliminary training Rowak eventually was allowed to undertake the rite of the three wolves with his best friend Thalia. Becoming an enforcer he fought alongside his wife on a number of occasions throughout his life.

As well as being a major node, he had a very weak magical potential. With it being latent he didn’t even have to seek training for it.

Completely and utterly adored their son when he was born.

Was trained as an enforcer, used twinned blades. Called them Sanguine and Pacem. Hated using them.

Accomplished archer.

Fought during a series of bouts of hostility with a hunter group.

Always kept his hair in a pony tail in human form.

Had no head for politics, tried to keep out of them. Unfortunately as a Blackwood and major node that’s easier said than done. He hated that with a vengeance. He’d rather help out and do something peaceful than engage in politics.

Was the first one to get on the wrong side of Matthias’s dad. Did so by working to try and secure more rights for outcast individuals to have avenues for fighting convictions.

Was subject to some hostility from pack elder’s on account of his bloodline.

Died with his wife, fighting as a loyal enforcer in the defence of the pack. He left his son fragments of knowledge of his skill with a bow and blade along with doing what he could in those final moments to grant his son a good base to help cope with their telepathic abilities. His son also being a major node.

ahh tysm for asking about my mc’s 🥹 I’ve been wanting to make a longer separate post about each of them but work has kept me too busy lately! Will eventually get around to it but to answer your question (and elaborate just a tad on their backstories)…

Fun Facts about my MC’s 💜

Estelle Frye:

She was my first MC (and my only for many, many months!), so has the most detailed and fleshed out backstory by far. Her first name is inspired by the lead character from one of my favourite series of games (Trails in the Sky), but her nickname Este is also a subtle nod to Taylor Swift’s song ‘no body, no crime’.

I also decided to throw in a bit of a crossover with my last fandom by making her the daughter of the AC:Syndicate protagonist Jacob Frye.

With that in mind, her fun fact is that she is able to use Eagle Vision and was briefly trained as an assassin prior to starting at Hogwarts. She tends to prefer a stealthier approach to combat, even when using magic.

She is also the MC most inspired by my own appearance & personality, so much so that eventually I just decided to cheekily self-insert a much cooler version of myself as her mom (because technically I did create her, right? 😂)

Evie Morgan:

My newest MC, so I’m still solidifying her character and backstory so apologies if this one seems a bit bland compared with the rest!

She is a distant descendant of Isadora Morganach - I know it’s not implied that Isadora had any children or family other than her brother & father, but my imagination was hard at work with this one 🤭

Fun fact - She is the younger cousin of Elsie Morgan, one of the other students who compete in Imelda’s time trials. I’ve decided that Elsie is the captain of the Ravenclaw Quidditch team too, because why not?

Her name is also another gentle nod to AC: Syndicate (Evie Frye) - there’s a pattern emerging here 🤷🏻‍♀️

Leila Greene:

She is my one and only muggleborn MC (technically…will elaborate more on this in the future!). She’s quite artsy and has a green thumb, and I consider her to be my most cheerful & outgoing character by far.

Fun fact: Her mother is a lover of all things literature & poetry and named her after the characters in Lord Byron’s works ‘The Giaour’ and ‘Don Juan’.

She’s also technically the only MC whose name isn’t directly inspired in some way by another form of media - I only found out about the Lord Byron connection after choosing her name!

Thalia Blackwood:

Another MC whose first name was inspired by a favourite character of mine from the Percy Jackson series. She is a descendant of Eunon Blackwood, the creator of the hedge mazes that appear around the highlands, which technically also makes her distantly related to the Black family (again, imagination working overtime on this one!). She is completely unaware of this until she stumbles upon the mazes during her fifth year.

As for her fun fact, like her namesake, she is terribly afraid of heights, and Astronomy & Flying class are two of her least favourite classes for this very reason.

NASA's Latest Exoplanet Posters Are a Halloween Treat Just in time for Halloween, NASA has released two new posters celebrating some truly terrifying exoplanets, or planets outside our solar system. Free to download, the entertaining posters recall vintage horror movie advertisements but have a decidedly astronomical focus. Dubbed Galaxy of Horrors, the fun but informative series resulted from a collaboration of scientists and artists and was produced by NASA's Exoplanet Exploration Program Office, located at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California. The same program is behind the popular Exoplanet Travel Bureau poster series, which imagines humans visiting some of the thousands of known worlds outside our solar system. Among the horrifyingly inhospitable worlds highlighted in the latest posters is HD 189733 b, a planet with an atmosphere full of silicates - the key component in sand and glass - and winds blowing at over 5,400 mph (6,700 kph). At those speeds, the silicates whipping through the air might create a perpetual storm of flying glass. If human or robotic explorers could travel 63 light-years from Earth to get there, they would never survive this planetary hellscape. The second poster features three planets - Poltergeist, Draugr and Phobetor - orbiting the pulsar PSR B1257+12, located about 2,000 light-years from Earth. Sometimes called a "dead star," a pulsar is the remains of a star that has ceased burning fuel at its core and collapsed. But it isn't a quiet corpse. Like other pulsars, PSRB 1257+12 produces dual beams of intense radiation that can sometimes be seen across the galaxy. Stray radiation and high-energy particles would attack the three nearby planets. Life as we know it could never form on these worlds. "People are often most interested in finding exoplanets that could resemble Earth or potentially support life as we know it," said Thalia Rivera, an outreach specialist at JPL who led the development of the new poster series. "But there are so many other amazing, mystifying planets out there that are completely unlike Earth and that show us the huge variety of ways planets can form and evolve. My favorite thing about exoplanets is how extreme they can get!" Scientists have discovered over 4,000 exoplanets, with a majority of those detected in the last 15 years by NASA's now-retired Kepler space telescope. NASA has multiple missions searching for and studying exoplanets, including the Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS), the Hubble Space Telescope and the Spitzer Space Telescope. They will be joined by upcoming missions, including the James Webb Space Telescope, set to launch in 2021, and the Wide Field Infrared Survey Telescope (WFIRST), scheduled to launch in the mid-2020s. The Exoplanet Exploration Program manages science and engineering tasks in support of NASA's search for exoplanets. In addition, the program helps engage the public about exoplanet science and increases awareness of NASA's exoplanet activities. "In practical terms, I think for many people the posters are an entryway," said Gary Blackwood, manager of the Exoplanet Exploration Program. "They make exoplanet science cool, and that opens a door for many members of the public - especially students - to learn more about the science behind the posters."

Most people think that they’re EXPRESSIVE and NURTURING, but they can also seem pretty ENTITLED and VAIN. Sometimes people call them the EBULLIENT. Sure, they’re a MUGGLEBORN, but that doesn’t define them.

BACKGROUND

Born February 10th, 1960 in Edinburgh, Scotland.

In the Muggle World, the Blackwood name is one that everyone has at least heard of. Persephone’s father, and many men who came before him, were all well noted politicians.

Her mother, is also a politician, though she is one of less caliber. She met Persephone’s father, Edmund, through her work. The two have never really been in love, their marriage is based on appearances alone. There’s an unspoken agreement between the two that they remain together, they may see others outside of their marriage.

Being the youngest of the two Blackwood sisters, Persephone was brought up receiving everything a young girl could ever want with just a pleading look. Her sister, however, got the short end of the stick, burdened with responsibilities that Persephone never had to deal with.

The two sisters somehow managed to remain close for a good portion of their childhood. Whenever Persephone’s magic manifested, it was always Thalia who took the blame.

Although she had originally made the conscious decision to do this, she resented Persephone in a way for it, wishing she had a normal sister who wouldn’t do such things. This resentment caused a rift in the girls’ relationship.

As she reached age eleven, Persephone was greeted with a man with a pointy beard and half moon glasses, who wore funny clothing unlike anything Persephone had ever seen before in her life. He explained to her, and her family that she was a witch and she would go to Hogwarts to study magic there.

Her parents were Catholics, and were shocked when they heard the word ‘witch’. To them, any form of witchcraft was considered evil & Satanic, and how could poor little Persephone be capable of such awful things ?

Thalia knew better than her parents and knew what the old man said to be true. Though their relationship at this time was complicated, she still stood up for her younger sister.

Reluctantly, Edmund & Amelia allowed her daughter to attend the school, as long as she came back for breaks & was able to maintain she was at some other elite boarding school.

LIFE AT HOGWARTS

Her time at Hogwarts was not how she expected it to be, at all. Persephone walked through the Great Hall expecting her name to have some substance when interacting with the other students. However, to her disappointment, her blood-status held her popularity down.

She became acquainted with the term ‘mud-blood’ early on, and had to learn how to be humble.

Thankfully, her house was one that she felt she could belong to, where she wouldn’t be judged simply because of where she came from. These people, along with a few others outside of Hufflepuff, would become her real family.

There are only a few places on the Hogwarts grounds where Persephone can be found. Most of her free time is spent either in the greenhouses with Professor Sprout, or with Professor Kettleburn aiding him with whatever magical creatures he has stashed away. The petite brunette has never been good in any sort of practical magic, such as D.A.D.A. or even Charms, but she finds that she excels in classes such as Potions, Herbology, and of course Care of Magical Creatures.

Made herself an easy target for harassment & bullying by being so open about her blood-status at the beginning, but she remained confident & never let anyone get her down.

Breaks are always hard for Persephone, because as much as she would love to stay at school, she is forced to return home to her parents and stay there.

PERSONALITY

Whenever the name Persephone Blackwood is ever mentioned in a conversation, there’s a certain image that pops into people’s minds, of a petite brunette well-groomed to perfection. When out of uniform, her style is with the most recent & popular trends. in uniform, although she is less fashionable, she still manages to find a way to accessorize as much as she can. Her face is well decorated, and never wears the same hairstyle twice. appearances are extremely important to her, and would never step outside of her bedroom looking anything less than perfect.

Given that her parents are locked in a loveless marriage, one would assume that Persephone despises the idea of falling in love, but in fact, she’s quite the opposite. She’s a dreamer, and fantasizes about falling in love constantly. She is of the belief that there is someone out there for her, just waiting to fall in love with her. she has a picturesque idea of how love should be, and anyone who falls short of that immediately gets cut out of the picture. Unfortunately, this means she has racked up quite the list of ex-lovers.

Coming from Scotland, she’s got quite an accent, although it’s dulled out a bit after years of travelling with her family, either for work related reasons or vacations.

Although she can be quite entitled & vain at times, she is a fairly easy-going person & gets along with most people ( as long as they can get past her flaws ). The only people she never could see herself getting along with, are those who bully or belittle others, or with previous exes that ended on a poor note.

Persephone is often known for her optimism & cheerful nature. there is rarely an occasion when those around her see her without a smile etched on her features. Those who truly know her, know that she isn��t this way because she’s naturally a happy person, quite the opposite. She spends her time at home being unloved by her parents, whose religion say that she is evil & worship the devil, as well as ignored by her sister because of their childhood together. Even at school, there are times she can’t help but be weighed down by the darkness from those who wish she never existed. Those who are closest to Persephone understand that she acts in such an upbeat manner as a way to cope with these feelings.

She loves art & painting with a passion, though most who know her would never guess it. She uses magic in quite a lot of her works, although hardly anyone has ever seen these creations. Although she does have a very outgoing personality, she can be a very guarded person, and wouldn’t show these to anyone unless she really trusted that person since her paintings are often a very personal thing to her.

Persephone is quite the picky eater, and has been ever since she was a little girl. For an entire year she wouldn’t have anything but chicken nuggets for dinner, no matter how hard her parents tried. Although her palette has expanded a bit since she was a young girl, she has trouble with certain foods. She won’t touch anything with tomato on it, or any sort of beef. Thankfully for her sake, she gets along with the house elves quite well and they make sure she gets exactly the foods that she prefers.

WANTED CONNECTIONS:

best friends; these two/three are inseparable, and are always seen together side by side. these are the people she trusts most in her life and would literally do anything for. (possibly 1-2 people for this plot idk she isn’t the type to have a ton of close friends, just a couple that she’d trust)

pen pals; someone seph doesn’t know the identity of, but relates to them on an emotional level. someone she relates to, and writes to whenever able.

exes; ( up to plotting, could either be a bad break up for the angst or just two pals who didn’t work but persephone is the type to have quite a list of exes so um yeah )

ex best friends; the person seph used to be closest to in the world, but lost due to (reasons to be plotted). now when they see each other in class or in the halls, its as if they never knew each other. any conversation shared is filled with an awkward tension.

fake relationship; ( not sure how or why but i love me a fake relationship plot so i’m adding it anyway. could be to piss off her parents or maybe her bc her family is pressuring her to find someone of worth. or maybe even something she can fulfill on your charas side idk just give me all the angsty plots lmao )
