California WTF?
By Shay Woulahan. October 21, 2023
An NPR-affiiated public broadcaster has released a sympathetic profile on a trans-identified male inmate accused of sexual assault and threatening female inmates while serving his sentence in a women’s prison. KQED, the member station for NPR and PBS in Northern California, suggested Syiaah Skylit was a victim of transphobic hoaxes and targeted punishment.
Skylit, born Jonathan Roberston, is currently serving a 16-year sentence on multiple counts of robbery with a gun. While he had initially been placed in a men’s prison, Skylit, along with the help of trans activists, fought for transfer to a women’s facility, and was eventually placed at the California Central Women’s Facility (CCWF) in mid-2021.
Skylit was one of many male inmates who were transferred to CCWF following the implementation of SB 132, also known as the Transgender Respect, Agency, and Dignity Act.

A trans-identified male musician in California is currently touring and performing songs calling for the murder of women critical of gender identity ideology. Precious Child, who previously involved himself in the Wi Spa controversy, utilizes graphic sexual and violent threats against “TERFs” in his music.
During his most recent performance at the Knockout Bar in San Francisco, Precious Child performed his song “TERF Killer,” riling the audience into chanting “kill a TERF today.”
TERF, an acronym standing for “Trans Exclusionary Radical Feminist,” is often broadly applied to all women who oppose the belief that males should be able to self-identify as female for the purposes of access to women’s spaces.
In a video of the performance shared to his YouTube account, Precious Child can be seen chanting “kill a TERF today” while the accompanying music video is shown on a screen behind him. The video features images of bullets and of a knife stabbing into the air as the words “kill a TERF today” flash repeatedly across the screen.
Precious Child has a history of repeatedly threatening critics of gender ideology, with a particular focus reserved for females who oppose gender self-identification law ........ Precious has also made repeated threats against world-renowned author JK Rowling.

Special 100th Post: Murder By Alphabet
I wanted to do something a little different for my 100th post, and decided to make a simple list of serial killers for every letter of the alphabet. Q and X have been left out due to the fact that nothing exists for those letters so, my apologies!
Tumblr media
Atlanta Ripper: Is an unidentified serial killer who’s suspected of killing 15 women in Atlanta between 1909 and 1914. 6 different suspects were found, but no convictions have ever been found. It’s possible that the Atlanta Ripper could be responsible for as many as 21 murders, but there’s no hard evidence that can declare that these murders were committed by the same person.
Bouncing Ball Killer: Is an unidentified serial killer who’s suspected of killing at least 6 women in Los Angeles between May 1959, and June 1960. 3 initial suspects have been cleared, and 5 others have been suspected, but no convictions have been made.
Charlie Chop-off: Is an unidentified serial killer known to have killed 4 children in Manhattan between 1972 and 1973. Police heavily believe that a man named Erno Soto is the killer, as the murders stopped after his arrest, but were let go due to lack of evidence.
Doodler: Is an unidentified serial killer suspected to have killed between 6 and 16 men, and an additional 3 assaults on other men in San Francisco, California. He was given his nickname the “Doodler” due to his signature of sketching his victims before stabbing them to death.
Edward Edwards: Before becoming a serial killer, he was a former fugitive. He escaped from jail in Ohio and held up multiple gas stations before making a run for it to Georgia. He landed himself on the FBI’s Ten Most Wanted List by 1961. He was captured in Atlanta, Georgia, and convicted of 5 confirmed murders, but is suspected to have killed 9-15 additional people.
Freeway Phantom: Is an unidentified serial killer who is suspected of killing 5 young girls and one woman in Washington, D.C, between April 1971, and September 1972. There have been multiple suspects, but no convictions have happened.
Grim Sleeper: Lonnie David Franklin Jr. was a serial killer who was responsible for at least 10 murders and one attempted murder in Los Angeles, California, between 1984 and 2007. He gained his nickname as the Grim Sleeper due to appearing to have taken a 14 year break between his murders. He was also convicted of sexual violence and rape.
Hillside Stranglers: Two serial killers named Kenneth Alessio Bianchi, and Angelo Buono Jr. They were convicted for kidnapping, raping, torturing, and killing 10 women together in Los Angeles, California, between October 1977, and February 1978. The victims were between 12 and 28 years old. Bianchi killed two additional women by himself, and were both sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole.
I-70 Strangler: Is an unidentified serial killer who’s suspected of killing at least twelve boys and men in Ohio and Indiana between June 1980, and October 1991. This case is officially unsolved, but it’s heavily suspected that the serial killer, Herb Baumeister, was the killer. Herb is now deceased, and was convicted for murdering over a dozen men in the early 1990s, some of them last being seen around gay bars. He killed himself after a warrant was out for his arrest.
Willie Ben Jones: Is a serial killer who killed at least sex workers in Richmond, Virginia, between 1980 and 1991. When asked why he killed these women, he replied by stating that they “had to be punished for being sex workers.” He was given 3 consecutive 20 year sentences.
Todd Kohlhepp: Is a serial killer and sex offender who was convicted of killing seven people in South Carolina between 2003 and 2016. He also kidnapped at least one woman, sexually assaulted another, and claims that he’s killed many more.
Leonard Lake: Was a serial killer during the mid 1980s, and was convicted of raping, torturing, and killing 11 women, and is suspected to have killed as many as 25. He also had an accomplice, Charles Ng. They killed their victims at a remote cabin in Wilseyville, California.
Cory Morris: Is a serial killer, rapist, and necrophile who murdered at least 5 sex workers in his trailer in Phoenix, Arizona, between September 2002, and April 2003. He was sentenced to death, but is currently still alive at age 45.
Francis Nemechek: Is a serial killer who killed 4 women and a young boy in Kansas between December 1974, and August 1976. He admitted to the murders and also claimed to have sexually assaulted some of them, but plead not guilty for the reason of insanity, but was found guilty anyway and sentenced to life in prison. He has been denied parole 4 times.
Juan David Ortiz: Is a serial killer and spree killer who killed 4 sex workers in September 2018. He was arrested after a potential victim escaped and contacted the police.
Pleasant Pruitt: Is a serial killer who killed three subsequent wives. He was never charged with killing his first two wives, but ended up taking his own life after he killed his last wife to refrain from going to prison.
Robert Ben Rhoads: Is a serial killer and rapist who was convicted in 1994 for murdering 3 women that he found at truck stops. He’s also suspected of killing as many as 50 women.
Skid Row Stabber: Is an unidentified serial killer who murdered 11 women between 1978 and 1979 in a neighborhood that people liked to call “Skid Row” located in Los Angeles. This neighborhood is known to house a lot of homeless people, who are often subjected to victimization. Bobby Joe Maxwell was arrested, charged, and convicted of the murders, but his conviction was overturned in 2010.
Brandon Tholmer: Is a serial killer and rapist responsible for at least 12 murders of elderly women between January 1981 and October 19823, in Los Angeles' West Side. He gained the nickname “The West Side Rapist.” It’s speculated that he possibly had an accomplice, and could’ve killed up to 34 women.
Andrew Uridales: He was a serial killer who was convicted of murder twice. He was convicted in 2002 for killing 3 women in Illinois, and then convicted in California in 2018 for killing 5 women. He was sentenced to death in California, but killed himself in prison a few months later. He also attacked another woman in 1992, but she thankfully escaped.
Darren Deon Vann: Is a serial killer who was arrested in October 2018 for the murder of Afrikka Hardy (19), in Hammond, Indiana. He also confessed to killing 6 other women, and led the police to all of their bodies, which were found in 5 abandoned structures in Gary, Indiana. He is suspected of killing as many as 18 women.
West Mesa Murders: Is an unidentified serial killer who’s responsible for the murders of 11 women, whose remains were found buried in the desert of West Mesa of Albuquerque, New Mexico, in 2009. There have been multiple suspects, but no one has been charged. The killings were believed to be the work of a serial killer, but they suspect that it’s possible that a sex trafficking ring could’ve been involved.
Robert Lee Yates: Is a serial killer also known as the Grocery Bag Killer, who’s known to have killed at least 11 women Spokane, from 1975 to 1998. He also confessed to killing two additional women in Walla Walla in 1975, and another murder in Skagit County in 1988. In 2002, he was convicted of killing two women in Pierce County and was sentenced to death, but his sentence was later changed to life without parole, as the Washington Supreme Court ruled capital punishment as unconstitutional in 2018.
Zebra Murders: Were a string of racially motivated murders and related attacks committed by a group of four black serial killers in San Francisco, California, between October 1973, and April 1974. They murdered at least 15 people and wounded 8 others. Police gave the case the name "Zebra" after the special police radio band they assigned to the investigation. Some authorities believe that the “Death Angel’s,” as the killers called themselves, may have killed as many as 73 or more victims since 1970.

San Francisco’s district attorney has released surveillance video showing the moment a Walgreens security guard fatally shot an alleged shoplifter in late April.
The release of the footage showing the events leading to the death of Banko Brown comes as District Attorney Brooke Jenkins reiterated Monday that she will not charge the security guard in the incident, identified as Michael-Earl Wayne Anthony, after being unable to find evidence to refute his "reasonable self-defense claim in court."
"With the video that has no sound, no audio to it, it is difficult to have context to what is going on, and that is why we must listen to the security guard's statement, the witness statements, and everything else in order to look at the full picture of the incident," Jenkins said Monday while also releasing police records about the April 27 shooting.
"I would also remind everyone that as prosecutors it is our burden to ensure that we can prove a case beyond a reasonable doubt to 12 jurors. That is the standard of proof when we make a charging decision," she added. "And in this case we had to decide whether or not we had the sufficient evidence to prove this case to 12 jurors beyond a reasonable doubt. It was our conclusion that we did not have such evidence and that is why we have arrived at this decision at this time."
SAN FRANCISCO DA DECLINES TO CHARGE WALGREENS SECURITY GUARD WHO SHOT, KILLED ALLEGED SHOPLIFTER
The footage begins with Anthony standing near the door of the Walgreens before confronting Brown, who appears to try to exit the store while holding a bag of items.
The pair then engage in a physical struggle, and Anthony can be seen throwing punches at Brown.
Anthony is later seen holding Brown down on the floor as customers file in and out of the store. After releasing her, she gets up, grabs her bag and walks out of the store before turning around and appearing to gesture at Anthony.
That is when Anthony fired a shot at Brown, causing her to fall backward onto the sidewalk outside.
Brown, 24, was taken to a hospital and died after suffering gunshot wounds.
In a police report released Monday, Anthony told investigators that Brown said, "I’m gonna stab you! I’m gonna stab your a--!" during the struggle.
SAN FRANCISCO WOMAN NAMED THOR KILL SENTENCED TO PRISON FOR POSSESSION OF BOMB-MAKING SUPPLIES, AMMUNITION
"She looked like she was going to leave, but then she turned back towards me. I didn’t know what her intention was at that time, ‘but it turns out her intention was to spit on me... by her turning around and advancing that’s when I lifted my gun and shot once,’" the report added, citing Anthony.
"I didn’t want to end no life. That was not my intention. I just wanted to stop the threat," Anthony also said, according to police.
While Anthony was restraining Brown on the floor, a witness whom police said had an "unobstructed view of the incident from beginning to end" told police they heard Brown say "let me go and I’ll fight you one on one" before Anthony responded "I’ll let you go if you calm the f--- down."
But San Francisco Supervisor Shamann Walton said in a statement Monday that the video does not show justification for the shooting. He plans to join Board President Aaron Peskin in calling on the state attorney general for an independent review of the prosecutor's decision.
Brown, who struggled with homelessness, according to The Associated Press, worked as a community organizer for the Young Women’s Freedom Center, a nonprofit that provides support for young women and trans youth.
"We do not need to see the video to know that Banko Brown’s killing was unjustified. Armed force is not a justified response to poverty," said Julia Arroyo, the center’s co-executive director, in a statement Monday. "We must live with the sobering reality that [she] was killed for no other cause but $14."

German Press Kit for Defenseless (1991). Below is the translated production info from inside, plus J.T. Walsh’s actor profile.
Lawyer T.K. Katwuller (Barbara Hershey) seems to have everything the successful woman of the 90s needs: she has a top job in a renowned law firm, a great apartment in Beverly Hills, great clothes. Only something clouds the image of the career lady: her private life is a single disaster.
After a failed marriage and several unsuccessful attempts to find Mr. Right, she ends up with an absolute Mr. Wrong - her client Steven Seldes (T.J. Walsh). He is charming, cosmopolitan - but married. And not only that. Seldes is in a complicated case where it is about porn movies and child pornography.
T.K. stands behind her client and his version - that he is only involved to the extent that he unknowingly rented a warehouse in which the porn was shot.
The events roll over after porn director Jack Hammer (John Kapelos) is brutally beaten up in Stevens' warehouse converted into a studio.
Shortly after the incident, T.K. visits the place of the event. She hopes to find relief material for her client - and runs to the police detective Lt. George Beutel (Sam Shepard) across the way.
From the first moment, there is a tension between the two between Attraction and aversion.
A little later, T.K., obviously by chance, meets her old college friend Ellie (Mary Beth Hurt), who has not been seen for years - and discovers that she is Steven's wife.
Ellie doesn't know anything about this relationship and invites T.K. to dinner to give her her husband and the half-grown daughter Janna (Kellie Overbey).
The evening is, as usual, highly embarrassing and ends for T.K. with the decision to end the private relationship with Steven immediately. She leaves the Seldes House, extremely excited and angry. Steven follows her to the waggon and T.K. demands her apartment key back. Steven convinces her to a debate a little later in his office.
T.K. arrives there before Steven and accidentally finds material that clearly proves Steven's suffocation in the porn affair.
After Steven arrives, she confronts him. There is a fierce dispute in the course of which Steven becomes tangible. T.K. tries to defend himself and stabs Steven in the arm with a letter opener. In a panic, she leaves the Office.
Arriving in front of the house, she has to realise that she left her car keys in Steven's office. She turns around again, but does not find Steven in the office - but loud traces of blood on the floor. A few moments later, she discovers Steven in the men's toilet - brutally murdered.
T.K. is calling for the police. Lt. Beutel leads the investigation, which finds that Steven was killed by several stitches in the neck and chest. In a certain awareness that she cannot possibly have killed Steven with a stab in the arm, T.K. decides not to report this incident to the police.
The next day brings another terrible surprise. Ellie was accused of the murder of her husband and is arrested.
Ellie insists on being defended by T.K. T.K. can be convinced. A fatal decision, as it soon turns out. T.K.'s attempts to prove Ellie's innocence gradually reveal secrets that connect the two women in a strange way....
J.T. WALSH (Steven Seldes)
Walsh embodies the morally bankrupt entrepreneur in WEHRLOS
Steven Seldes, whose dubious businesses are the starting point of the tragic-bloody events.
Walsh was born in San Francisco. At the age of five, he moved to Germany with his family and only returned to the states at the age of 19. He only started his acting career at the age of 30, after he had previously tried numerous other jobs.
The stage career began in Connecticut and led to New York at the St. Clemens Theatre and the Manhattan Theatre Company. In a "Richard III" production, he played alongside Al Pacino on the Broad-way. Other roles there: in Frank Gilroy's "Last Licks", next to Nicol Williamson in "Macbeth", with Glenda Jackson in "Rose", with Williamson again in "Glengarry Glen Ross".
On the cinema screen, he has now established himself as a villain from the service. In "Good Morning, Vietnam" he was Robin Williams stubborn superior, in Robert Towne's "Tequila Sunrise" (with Kurt Russell, Mel Gibson and Michelle Pfeiffer) an ambivalent drug searcher, in Fred Schepisi's "Russia House" a cold-nosted military, in Ron Howard's "Backdraft - Men Who Go Through Fire" just a corrupt municipal politician.
He has already been in front of the camera twice with Barbara Hershey: in Barry Levinson's "Tin Men" and in Woody Allen's "Hannah and her sisters".
Recently, he shot a Hollywood satire with "The Big Picture" and played the disclosure journalist Bob Woodward in "Wired".

The Unexplainable
(Warning: Mentions of blood, cults, stabbing, sacrificing animals and people)
Lucia Johnson, a twenty-three year old African American woman with a love for the ocean, suffered an ancient at a young age. As a child she used to go deep sea fishing with her father. One night she was sent to retrieve something from the captain's quarters. As she retrieved the item for her father, happy to be of some help, a mirage of red and blue lights flashing throughout the sky. The boat shook violently as the water around them thrashed and slammed into the boat. Her father’s cries for her to stay, soon drowned out by an echoing voice. Staying in the closed off room she watched as hands arose from the depths of the ocean, covered in rock and plants they rose beyond the waves. The stone cracking and crumbling revealing deep shimmering skin that reflected red and blue rapidly, practically blinding her. The voices spoke in a language she could not hear, but she could see the panic on her father’s face. Afraid to leave, she could only watch in horror as her father was grabbed by whatever force they came upon, the sky flashing fast, the boat rocking violently. Loosing her footing Lucia hit her head on the wheel falling unconscious.
When she awoke she was in the hospital with her mother and grandmother at her side. Informed that her father had disappeared off the boat, supposedly drowned. She was found by the coast guard the following morning. She had been comatose for 3 days. After telling her family what had occurred that night they tossed it up to a Childs imagination combined with trauma. Putting her on medication that made her more awake, aware, and deemed more reasonable.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Now grown up she works as an evening-shift cashier in the middle of San Francisco, California. One day while arriving at her shift she witnessed waves of women buying ritualistic supplies and running out the store in swarms. The odd and aggressive behavior from these women intrigued Lucia. She and her fellow cashier and friend Mikey Truman decide to follow the swarm of women. After hiking though the forest the two trailed the group to a secluded part of a beach.
The sight before the was like something out of a movie. There were women putting on red cloaks, animals being lined up as they one by one had their throats slit, letting the blood collect in the middle of what looked like some sort of ritualistic carving, candles being placed and lit around the circle. Mikey quickly pulled out her camera to record the ongoing preparations of something big, something supernatural. Deciding she had enough Lucia wanted to turn back and leave. She gasped as two hooded figures grabbed them.
Kicking and screaming the duo is dragged towards the center of the carvings. Lucia, screaming and kicking tries to fight against her captures. Taking out a knife they hold her down in the middle of the blood soaked sand. Mikey screaming her name as the women raised the blade. With the last bit of strength Lucia sits up abruptly, unconsciously holding up her hand to block the blade.
It all happened so fast. The blade perigee through Lucias hand, her screams filled the air as blood spilled onto the center sigil. A bright flash of red and blue lights erupt from the circle, surrounding Lucia. Voices started speaking to her, shouting at her. Screaming in pain she stands and begins to swing her hand around, blade still inside. As she swung herself around in a panic she felt her hand collide with a hard object. Looking up in horror she sees her bloody wounded hand, connected to a man’s chest, the blade sinking into his flesh. A pair of lilac eyes stared at her with with confusion.
“Who the hell are you?”
Priest As Dreamer!
Priest As Dreamer!
"In the last days it shall be as God declares, that I will pour out my Spirit on all flesh and your sons and daughters shall prophecy, and your young men and women shall see visions, and your old men and women shall see dreams. .Acts 2:17."
The Bushmen of Africa talk about two hungers:
   1. The Great Hunger.
   2. The Little Hunger.
The Little Hunger yearns for food, while the Great Hunger, yearns for meaning. Only a life that yearns for the hunger for purpose is truly fulfilled. Only a life that has the Great Hunger is truly human! Priest the Dreamer!
One night a young twelve you old,sitting around a campfire at summer camp, felt his "heart strangely warmed", called to ministry, and thus began his journey to fill the Great Hunger, in the search for meaning! Priest the Dreamer!
His journey took him through college, seminary, and ordination into ministry, following the Great Hunger, of the Dream. At his ordination, his bishop challenged  the ordinals, "you are called to wait tables." Priest the Dreamer!
"To wait tables!" "Preach the Word and Administer the Sacraments", the Dream became a covering of hope and meaning! Priest the Dreamer!
And the Dream brought him to San Francisco,  becoming visible in those we serve! Priest the Dreamer!
The dream is seen in the young man who pulls a knife, and spits in anger at the priest who sees the face of the broken Christ! Priest the Dreamer!
One sees the dream in the man stabbing this priest with a syringe full of blood, giving him malaria, and later murdering the priest's son,   leading to the priest learning the meaning of Jesus's command to forgive! Priest the Dreamer!
The dream is seen in the young boy, high on drugs hitting the priest with a club and the days following not knowing whether he would be able to walk again! The dream was seen on the boy's face when told he was forgiven! Priest the Dreamer!
My dream has been sustained, supported, and this is why in the best and worst of times I see the Dreamer leading me into Galilee
What is your dream? What sustains you in the darkest of times?  Find the dream that feeds the hunger for meaning! Priest the Dreamer!
Lent begins Wednesday, and is a time of reflection! A time to enter into the heart of the Great Dreamer, finding the Dream meaning! Deo Gratias! Thanks be to God!
Deo Gratias! Thanks be to God1
What Happens Here
Everyone Remembers Their First Time
Everything I know about Las Vegas I have learned against my will. My first time, in 2003, was part of an extended honeymoon with my first wife which also saw us take in Hawaii and San Francisco. Originally we had planned to get married in Las Vegas, but it turned out that she did not want our marriage to be a post-modernist statement, filled with irony and self-referential humour. In retrospect, I can see her point. We spent two blurry days in that salt lake neon cabaret, blurry because this city will not allow you to slow down.
There was of course the betrayal of the spirit felt by anyone who visits Las Vegas, a betrayal of the human values which represent the thin rainbow line separating us from the fascists. The greatest betrayal I felt, however, was during a Cirque Du Soleil show at the Bellagio when the audience member selected at random by a dramatic clown to participate on stage turned out to be a performer.
That Difficult Second Trip
In 2009, my first wife invited me to seal our divorce by taking a very platonic trip to Las Vegas with a friend of ours called Killian, who is one of those friends you meet every five years and who is always doing something more interesting than you. This time, he was in Los Angeles for a few months on secret business.
As he was going to be in Las Vegas, he said he wanted to meet a friend of his sister’s who worked there. All he knew about her was her name, her phone number and that she was a dancer. This described 85% of the women living in Las Vegas as far as I was concerned, but my ex-wife was on the case immediately. She booked a room for three people, and some things for us to do and then we headed out across the white, wind-farm-dappled plains of California and Nevada.
We were somewhere around Barstow, on the edge of the desert, when the drugs began to take hold. Because the drugs I had taken were mainly acetaminophen (what the Europeans among you would call “paracetamol”), this meant that my nagging tension headache resolved itself into a negligible thrum.
I remembered Las Vegas as a town full of sound of fury, lights and whores, gambling and carousing, openly mocking any hope of evolution, celebrating that which should be eliminated from our culture if the human animal is ever going to level up. What the hell, I thought, maybe it’s changed.
Las Vegas had not changed. I don’t know what the opposite of “oasis” is, but this is probably the only place on the planet where that word could be used. It’s in the middle of the desert but it’s a depressing cesspit of messy alcoholics, garish flashes and glares, a constant background din of bleeps and whistles, all cheered on by a committed crew of professional losers. It makes the featureless salt flats all around seem like heaven. Middle-aged women dressed like they were twenty years younger were bringing drinks in plastic cups to loss-junkie animals at three o'clock in the morning. And there they were, throwing chips onto numbers and colours, and laughing about it with their new temporary friends: “Daddy needs a new pair of shoes!" Daddy wants stabbing in the teeth, more like.
Our first sign that Killian’s dancer friend may have been understating herself was the frequent occurrence of her image on street corners, huge billboards and the occasional bus. “Wait,” he said as the first bus whizzed past us, comparing the marketing material with a blurry photo on his phone, “I think that’s her!” And so it was. This friend of Killian, unknown to him due to the wilful under-informing of his sister, was the lead dancer in one of the Cirque du Soleil productions. He wandered off into the brightly-lit dusk to find his friend, leaving me and my ex-wife alone in the room. I have no idea how their night went, but we didn’t see him again for some time.
As is traditional among her native people (Californians), this trip to Las Vegas was assumed by my ex-wife without any consultation to be an opportunity for us all to visit the Grand Canyon. The Grand Canyon was such a wonderful break from Las Vegas that I could actually feel my brain unclench.
At the risk of stating the obvious, the Grand Canyon is a giant hole in the ground. There’s nothing wrong with that, but without getting into too many details, it is unambiguously a giant hole in the ground. I understand that this is a trivial observation and I’m not the first person to mention this but a part of the Las Vegas hangover I was going through led me to mention this out loud within earshot of the Arizona state tourist liaison who was dressed like a forest ranger and spoke about the canyon with pride as though he had personally spent thousands of years sculpting the sunset layers of rock himself. I love holes but I don’t see the point in being proud of them. In my confusion, I said this out loud too. He confused my garbled platitudes for being underwhelmed and felt like he had to address the issue as if it were a customer complaint.
He stood with me on the edge of the ledge that looks over Eagle Rock holding a paper mug of coffee and said: “You should go to Winslow if you have the time.”
I had never heard of Winslow, but apparently it was also in Arizona and within reasonable driving distance of the Grand Canyon. Remember that this was specifically to address his perception of my complaint that the Grand Canyon was just a big hole in the ground. I mumbled something, afraid that I might accidentally say something even more offensive to this very patient man. “Go to Winslow,” he said. “They have the biggest meteor crater in the world down there.”
What Happens In Vegas
The third time I went to Las Vegas, in 2010, was very much against my will. As Stephen King said: “Fool me three times, shame on both of us.” I was inveigled into an informal college student transport scheme and so I found myself driving three friends from the University of California, Riverside to what they imagined was going to be an amazing night of clubbing.
This time, I was under no illusions and prepared for the worst. I was determined to stay all night in the grubby North Las Vegas apartment which had a wonderful view of the other side of the apartment block. Despite the architect’s best attempts to remove all reference points from the field of vision, once evening fell, an unmistakeable radioactive glow diffused its way into the atmosphere just above the apartment where a Hispanic couple were screaming at each other.
The girls taxied to a club in Las Vegas and left me where I was. I made the terrible decision to wander around the complex to talk to any of the lost and broken people of Las Vegas who looked like they would not try to kill me for looking them in the eye. I spoke to seven people that night, and everyone’s story was full of misery and there wasn’t much in the way of redemption or satisfaction of any kind.
When the girls rolled back into the apartment at 4am, I told them nothing about the unfolding human tragedy in seven different layers all around us. I just made them hot chocolate and put them to bed.
Later that morning, I bundled them into the car as quickly as I could and shot straight for the highway home. One of them shuffled conscious long enough to notice what was going on and insisted that we stop at a small market to “get stuff”. This “stuff” was not food or drink or magazines. It was a variety of fridge magnets, key rings and pens, all garishly decorated with images of landmarks I never wanted to see again. For a town whose motto is “What happens here, stays here,” they sure sell a lot of souvenirs.
STOP ASIAN VIOLENCE
As an Asian, I feel like I have the need to speak out, but there might not be a lot of people who see this. So please, if you can, reblog for me. we need to spread the information.
70.9% of 2808 reported incidents are verbal harassment
21.4% of 2080 reported incidents are shunning
8.7% are physical assault
8% are workplace discrimination or refusal of service
6.4% are coughed/spat on
and these are only REPORTED CASES (March - December 2020)
Here are some reported attacks from around May 2021
An 84-year-old Thai immigrant in San Francisco, California, died in February after being violently shoved to the ground during his morning walk
In Oakland, California, a 91-year-old senior was shoved to the pavement from behind
An 89-year-old Chinese woman was slapped and set on fire by two people in Brooklyn, New York
Two Asian American women were stabbed at a San Francisco bus stop; eyewitness reports say the assailant "casually walked away in broad daylight"
An Asian man walking with his 1-year-old child in a stroller in San Francisco was punched in the head and back multiple times
A stranger on the New York subway slashed a 61-year-old Filipino American passenger's face with a box cutter
An Asian American woman in New York City was struck in the head with a hammer by an unidentified assailant who demanded that she remove her mask
Asian American restaurant employees in New York City told the New York Times they now always go home early for fear of violence and harassment
An Asian American butcher shop owner in Sacramento, California found a dead cat - likely intended for her - left in the store's parking lot; police are investigating it as a hate crime
An Asian American family celebrating a birthday at a restaurant in Carmel, California, was berated with racist slurs by a Trump-supporting tech executive
Several Asian Americans homeowners say they've been abused with racial slurs and had rocks thrown at their houses
The only Asian American lawmaker in the Kansas legislature says he was physically threatened in a bar by a patron who accused him of carrying the coronavirus
New York police arrested a man who assaulted a woman during a protest against anti-Asian racism
A grieving family received a hateful letter on the day of their father's funeral, telling them to "pack your bags and go back to your country where you belong"
A school board candidate of Vietnamese descent in Portland, Oregon, found a note with the words "Kung Flu" on her doorstep
A medical worker of Filipino descent in Los Gatos, California was shoved to the ground from behind by an assailant who told her to "go back to [expletive] China"
A Thai woman was brutally beaten and robbed of her phone while commuting on a train in San Francisco
These incidents are best explained by the "widespread omission" of Asian Americans within cultural conversations, according to Amanda Nguyen, an activist, and the founder of the Rise civil rights not-for-profit organization.
Of the 832 incidents reported in California, many included anti-Asian slurs and references to China and the coronavirus. One assailant yelled about "bringing that Chinese virus over here" during an attack against an Asian-American man at a San Francisco hardware store on May 6. The assailant reportedly also said "Go back to China," "F*ck you, Chinaman" and "F*ck you, you monkey." In Santa Clara on June 16, a man kicked a woman's dog and then spat at her, saying, "Take your disease that's ruining our country and go home."
Asian American families shouldn't be worrying about returning back to school, buying groceries, working, and so on, in their country. They shouldn't be worrying about their family going on a morning walk and not coming back.
"These are real people just living their lives and encountering this kind of hate,"
Yes, black lives STILL matter. Yes, LGBTQ+'s rights still matter. But I feel like we are overlooking the Asian Hate.
BLM, LGBTQ+, Asian Hate, women's rights, and more. They're NOT a trend, and I DESPISE those people who see these as a trend to get more fame. We are all in this together, there's no race in this pandemic. The virus isn't racist, you won't get the virus BECAUSE you are white, you won't get the virus BECAUSE you are black. Skin colors do NOT matter to the virus, so why should they matter to us? If we want to end this pandemic, we need to fight TOGETHER.
Thank you for spending your time reading this. Please, if you can, reblog.
Something Wicca This Way Comes - P1
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Serena Fredrick: Come on, baby. Good girl. (She walks over to her altar and lights the candles with just a touch of her finger. You see someone standing outside her window. She starts saying a spell.) Ancient one of the earth so deep, master of moon and sun. I shield you in my wiccan way, here in my circle round, asking you to protect this space, and offer your sun force down. (Someone walks up behind her. She turns around.) What are you doing here? (The man pulls out a knife and plunges it into her stomach.)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Piper: Prue?
Prue: In here, working on the chandelier.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Piper: Sorry I'm late.
Prue: What else is new? Piper, I would have been here to meet the electrician myself but you know I can't leave the museum until six. I didn't even have time to change.
Piper: I just didn't realise how long I was in Chinatown. Did Jeremy call?
Prue: No, but he had some roses and a package delivered. What were you doing in Chinatown? I thought that you had an interview in North Beach.
Piper: I did but I went to Young Lee market after my interview to get the ingredients for my audition recipe tomorrow.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Prue: So, that wolfgang-puck knock-off didn't hire you then?
Piper: No, but this just may get me the job.
Prue: Jeremy sent you port?
Piper: The ultimate ingredient for my recipe. Oh my God, I don't believe it. Tell me that's not our old spirit board?
Prue: Yeah, I found it in the basement when I was looking for the circuit tester.
Tumblr media
Piper: (Reading the inscription on the back) "To my three beautiful girls. May this give you the light to find the shadows. The power of three will set you free. Love, Mom." We never did figure out what this inscription meant.
Tumblr media
Prue: Well, maybe we should send it to Phoebe. That girl is so in the dark, maybe a little light will help.
Piper: You're always so hard on her.
Prue: Piper, the girl has no vision, no sense of the future.
Piper: I really think Phoebe's coming around.
Prue: Well, as long as she doesn't come around here I guess that's good news.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Darryl: Well, it's about time.
Andy: I got here as soon as I heard. Another dead female, right? Mid to late twenties.
Darryl: I've been paging you for over an hour, Trudeau, where have you been?
Andy: Checking out a lead.
Tumblr media
Darryl: What lead?
Andy: One that didn't go anywhere.
Darryl: You're avoiding my question.
Andy: Because you don't want to know that I went to an occult shop.
Darryl: You hate me don't you? You wanna see me suffer.
Andy: I wanna solve these murders. Someone's after witches.
Darryl: Women.
Andy: That woman up there, I bet she was killed with an athame.
Tumblr media
Darryl: Wrong. Double edged steel knife.
Andy: Right. That's an athame. It's a ceremonial tool. Witches use them to direct energy.
Darryl: That woman didn't direct jack. She was stabbed. Plain and simple.
Andy: Was she found in an altar?
Tumblr media
Darryl: Yes.
Andy: Were there carvings on that altar?
Darryl: Just do me a favor. Don't even follow a lead without checking with me first.
Andy: You wanna go to occult shops?
Darryl: Get to work okay.
Tumblr media
Jeremy: Jeremy Burns. San Francisco Chronicle. You care to comment?
Andy: A woman was stabbed. Plain and simple.
Jeremy: Well, that's the third one in three weeks.
(Andy walks off.)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Prue: I don't get it. I have checked everything, there's no reason why the chandelier should not be working.
Piper: You know how we've been talking about what to do with the spare room? I think you're right, we do need a roommate.
Tumblr media
Prue: We can rent the room at a reduce rate in exchange for some help around the house.
Piper: Phoebe's good with a wrench.
Prue: Phoebe lives in New York.
Piper: Not anymore.
Prue: What?
Piper: She left New York. She's moving back in with us.
Prue: You have got to be kidding.
Piper: Well, I could hardly say no. It's her house too. Grams left it to all three of us.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Prue: Yeah, months ago and we haven't seen or spoken to her since.
Piper: Well, you haven't spoken to her.
Prue: No, I haven't. Look, maybe you've forgotten why I'm still mad at her.
Tumblr media
Piper: No, of course not but she had nowhere else to go. She lost her job, she's in debt.
Prue: And this is news? How long have you known about this anyway?
Piper: A couple of days, maybe a week—or two.
Prue: Thanks for sharing. When does she arrive?
Tumblr media
(The front door opens and Phoebe walks in.)
Phoebe: Surprise! I found the hide-a-key.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Piper: Phoebe, welcome home.
Tumblr media
Phoebe: Hello, Piper. (Piper and Phoebe hug.)
Tumblr media
Piper: It's so good to see you. Isn't it Prue?
Tumblr media
Prue: I'm speechless.
Tumblr media
(A car horn beeps.)
Phoebe: Oops. I forgot about the cab.
Piper: I'll get it. (She grabs Prue's purse.)
Tumblr media
Prue: Piper, that's my purse.
Tumblr media
Phoebe: Thanks. I'll pay you back.
Prue: Is that all that you brought?
Phoebe: That's all that I own and a bike. Look, I know that you don't want me here....
Tumblr media
Prue: We're not selling Grams' house.
Phoebe: Is that why you think I came back?
Prue: Look, the only reason Piper and I gave up our apartment and moved back here was because this house has been in our family for generations.
Phoebe: No history lesson needed. I grew up here too. So can we talk about what's really bothering you?
Tumblr media
Prue: No, I'm still furious with you.
Phoebe: So, you'd rather have a tense reunion filled with boring chitchat and unimportant small talk?
Prue: No, but otherwise we won't have anything to talk about.
Phoebe: I never touched Roger.
Tumblr media
Prue: Whoa.
Phoebe: I know you think otherwise because that's what that Armani-wearing, Chardonnay-slugging, trust-funder told you ...
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Piper: Hey, I have a great idea. Why don't I make a fabulous reunion dinner.
Tumblr media
Prue: I'm not hungry.
Tumblr media
Phoebe: I ate on the bus.
Tumblr media
Piper: Okay, we'll try the group hug later.
Tumblr media
Piper: It's me.
Phoebe: Come on in. (Piper is carrying a tray with drinks and food on it.) Thank God. I am starving.
Tumblr media
Piper: Figured. (She sees Jeremy on TV.) Hey, that's my boyfriend, Jeremy. What happened?
Phoebe: Some woman got whacked.
Piper: Whacked? Phoebe, you've been in New York way too long.
Phoebe: Yeah, I should have stayed. Now, why didn't you tell her I was coming back?
Piper: And risk her changing the locks? I don't think so and besides, I think you should have been the one to tell her not me.
Tumblr media
Phoebe: Good point, Chicken Little. It's just so hard for me to talk to her. She's always been more like a mother.
Piper: That's not her fault. She practically had to sacrifice....
Phoebe/Piper: Her own childhood to raise us.
Phoebe: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Piper: And we're lucky she was so responsible. You and I had it easy, all we had to do was be there.
Phoebe: Yeah, well, I don't need a mom anymore, you know, I need a sister.
Tumblr media
Prue: This was always the coldest room in the house.
Phoebe: Thanks.
Tumblr media
Andy: It's the same tattoo that was on the other two victims.
Darryl: So, the murderer is killing occults.
Andy: No, the murderer's on witch hunts.
Darryl: Oh, yeah, he's five to eight years old and he lives in Salem. Look around, Trudeau. Pentagrams, altars, offerings, all the tools of a freak fest.
Andy: They call them Sabbaths. Which is hardly a freak fest. She was a solitary practitioner. She practiced her craft alone.
Tumblr media
Darryl: Mmm.
Andy: Let me ask you something, Morris. Do you believe in U.F.O.'s?
Darryl: Hell, no.
Andy: Neither do I. But do you believe that there are people out there who do believe in U.F.O.'s?
Darryl: Yes, but I think they're crazy.
Andy: Well, then why can't you believe that there are people who believe they are witches.
Tumblr media
Darryl: Look, all I know is if you don't stop talking about witches, I'm gonna start questioning you. (Kit jumps up on the bench. She meows. Andy goes over and pats her.) I'd stay away from that cat, Trudeau. It's been clawing the crap out of everybody. See you at the car.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Phoebe: When did you meet Jeremy?
Piper: About six months ago—right before Grams died. We met in the hospital cafeteria the day Grams was admitted. He was covering a story and I was bawling over a bagel. So, he handed me a napkin.
Phoebe: How romantic.
Piper: As a matter of fact it was. The napkin had his phone number on it. (Phoebe laughs.) Stop pushing the pointer.
Phoebe: I'm not touching it.
Tumblr media
Piper: You used to always push the pointer. More popcorn?
Tumblr media
Phoebe: Hey, I forgot your question.
Piper: (from the kitchen) I asked if Prue would have sex other than herself this year.
Phoebe: That's disgusting. Please say yes. (The pointer moved to the letter 'A' by itself.) Piper. (It then moves to 'T'.) Piper, get in here!
Tumblr media
Piper: What?
(Prue comes in.)
Prue: What did you guys do now?
Piper: Me? I didn't do anything.
Phoebe: The pointer on the spirit board. It moved on its own. (Prue and Phoebe stare at her.) I'm serious. It spelled 'A' 'T'.
Piper: Well, did you push it?
Phoebe: No.
Prue: You used to always push the pointer.
Tumblr media
Phoebe: My fingers were barely touching it. Look. (She puts her fingers on the pointer. Nothing happens. Prue and Piper turn and start to leave. The pointer moves to the bottom of the board, then back to the letter 'T'.) Ah, it did it again! It moved!
Tumblr media
Prue: It's still on the letter 'T'.
Phoebe: I swear it moved. (Prue leaves the room. The pointer moves again. Piper sees it too.) There. (She stands up.) Look. You saw that right?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Piper: I think so, yeah.
Phoebe: I told you I wasn't touching it. (The pointer moves again.)
Piper: Prue, can you come in here for a sec?
Tumblr media
Prue: Now what?
(Phoebe writes the letters down on an envelope.)
Phoebe: I think it's trying to tell us something. (She holds up the envelope.) Attic.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Prue: Don't you think you're overreacting? We're perfectly safe here.
Piper: Don't say that. In horror movies, the person who says that is always the next to die.
Prue: It is pouring rain. There's a psycho on the lose. Jeremy's not even home.
Piper: Well I'll-I'll-I'll wait in the cab until he gets home.
Prue: That'll be cheap.
Piper: Prue, I saw that pointer move.
Prue: No, look, what you saw was Phoebe's fingers pushing the pointer. There's nothing in the attic, she's playing a joke on us.
Piper: We don't know that. We've lived in this house for months and we've never been able to get that attic door open. (She crosses the foyer and picks up the phone.) Great, now the phone doesn't work.
Tumblr media
Prue: Yeah, the power's out. Look, go with me to the basement.
Piper: What?
Prue: I need you to hold the flashlight while I check out the main circuit box.
Piper: Phoebe will go with you to the basement won't you Phoebe.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Phoebe: Nope, I'm going to the attic.
Tumblr media
Prue: No, you're not. We already agreed.
Phoebe: I am not waiting for some handyman to check out the attic and I'm certainly not waiting until tomorrow. I'm going now.
Piper: Prue, wait.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
[Cut to Phoebe. She tries to open the attic door but it's locked. She gives up and turns to walk back down the stairs. She hears a creak and turns to see the attic door opening. She walks inside. A light shines on a trunk and she walks over to it. She opens it and there's a book inside. She picks up the book and blows the dust off. She opens it.)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Phoebe: "The Book of Shadows." (She turns the page and starts reading.) "Hear now the words of the witches, the secrets we hid in the night, the oldest of Gods are invoked here, the great work of magic is sought. In this night and in this hour, I'll call upon the ancient power, bring your powers to we sisters three, we want the power, give us the power."
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Prue: What are you doing?
Phoebe: Uh ... reading an incantation. It was in this Book of Shadows, I found it in that trunk.
Piper: How did you get in here?
Tumblr media
Phoebe: The door opened.
Piper: Wait a minute, an incantation? What kind of incantation?
Phoebe: It said something about there being three essentials of magic. Uh, timing, feeling and phases of the moon. If we were ever gonna do this, now - midnight on a full moon - is the most powerful time.
Piper: This? Do what?
Phoebe: Receive our powers.
Piper: What powers? Wait, our powers? You included me in this?
Prue: No, she included all of us. (Reading from the book.) "Bring your powers to we sisters three." It's a book of witchcraft.
Tumblr media
Piper: Let me see that.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Prue: Spirit boards, books of witchcraft. It figures all this freaky stuff started when you arrived.
Phoebe: Hey, I wasn't the one who found the spirit board.
Prue: But it wasn't my fingers sliding around on the pointer.
Piper: It doesn't matter. Because nothing happened, right Phoebe, when you did that incantation?
Phoebe: Well, my head spun around and I vomited split-pea soup. How should I know?
Piper: Well, everything looks the same.
Phoebe: You're right.
Prue: But the house still needs work.
Piper: Everything feels the same, so nothing's changed.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Piper: You're up early.
Phoebe: I never went to sleep.
Piper: Don't tell me you put on a black conical hat and spent the night flying around the neighborhood on a broomstick?
(She sits down next to Phoebe.)
Phoebe: The only broom I've ever had was kept in a closet beside a mop.
Piper: So what were you doing?
Phoebe: Reading. Is Prue around?
Piper: She went to work early. Reading aloud?
Tumblr media
Phoebe: No. According to the Book Of Shadows, one of our ancestors was a witch, named Melinda Warren.
Piper: And we have a cousin who's a drunk, an aunt who's manic, and a father who's invisible. (She stands up.)
Tumblr media
Phoebe: I'm serious. She practiced powers. Three powers. She could move objects with her mind, see the future and stop time. Before Melinda was burned at the stake, she vowed that each generation of Warren witches would become stronger and stronger, culminating in the arrival of three sisters. (They walk to Piper's car.) Now, these sisters would be the most powerful witches the world has ever known. They're good witches and I think we're those sisters.
Tumblr media
Piper: Look, I know what happened last night was weird and unexplainable, but we're not witches and we do not have special powers besides, Grams wasn't a witch and as far as we know, neither was mom. (Piper kisses her on the cheek.) So take that Nancy Drew.
Phoebe: We're the protectors of the innocent. We're known as the charmed ones.
Tumblr media
Roger: There's been change of plan.
Prue: Change of plan regarding the Beals expedition?
Roger: The extra money that you help raise through private donations has sparked significant corporate interest. The Beals artefacts will now become part of our permanent collection.
Tumblr media
Prue: Well, that's terrific.
Roger: Which is why the board wants someone a little more qualified to handle the collection from now on. You look surprised.
Prue: I don't know why. I'm furious. Not only have I been on this project since its inception, but I'm the curator who secured the entire exhibition. You're the person a little more qualified aren't you?
Roger: I could hardly say no to the board of directors, could I? But I know you'll be happy for me, after all, what's good for me is definitely good for you. Right, Miss Halliwell?
Prue: Miss Halliwell? Since when did we stop being on a first-name-basis? When we stopped sleeping together or when I returned your engagement ring, Roger?
Tumblr media
Roger: I didn't realize the two were mutually exclusive. Although I certainly enjoyed one more than the other.
Prue: Bastard! (She turns to leave.)
Roger: Prue, wait. (She stops.) I feel like I should say something if only to avoid a lawsuit. (She leaves. Roger's pen in his pocket leaks and gets a blue ink spot on his shirt. He takes the pen out of his pocket and it squirts in his face.)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Chef Moore: (In his French accent) Your time is up. Let's see. (Reading the index card.) Roast pork with gratin of fennel and penne with a port giblet sauce.
Piper: Chef Moore ...
Tumblr media
Chef Moore: What?
Piper: Uh, the port ...
Chef Moore: Yes, without the sauce it is nothing more than a salty marinara. A recipe from a woman's magazine. Puh!
Piper: I didn't have time for--
Chef Moore: Ah-ah!
Piper: But, but ... (He puts some on a fork and raises it to his mouth. Piper waves her hands around and he stops. He stands there like a statue.) Chef Moore? Chef Moore? (She waves her hand in front of his face.) Hello? Hello? (She picks up a baster and fills it up with some port. She dribbles some on Chef Moore's forkful of food. He unfreezes and puts it in his mouth.)
Tumblr media
Chef Moore: Mmm ... this is very good. C'est magnifique.
The Zodiac Killer: A Jungian and Typological Analysis #1
Tumblr media
Introduction to The Zodiac Killer
The Zodiac Killer was a Californian serial killer who took the lives of a confirmed five victims and a speculated seven to thirty-seven victims from December 20th, 1968 to October 11th, 1969. To this day he remains unidentified.
Murder (December 20th, 1968 - Lake Herman Road): David Arthur Faraday and Betty Lou Jensen are both shot at 10:15pm.
Murder (July 4th, 1969 - Blue Rock Springs Park Grounds): Darlene Ferrin and Michael Mageau are both shot with a 9mm luger. Mageau survives and later recalls the suspect as a short, heavyset male with short brownish-blonde hair and a round face.
Event (August 1st, 1969): The killer, now operating under the name “The Zodiac”, sends three letters written in code to the Vallejo Times, San Francisco Chronicle and the San Francisco Examiner.
Murder (September 27, 1969 - Lake Berryessa): Bryan Hartnell and Cecelia Shepard are approached by The Zodiac who binds them with fishing line under the false pretense he was a recently escaped prison convict. Bryan Hartnell and Cecelia Shepard are then promptly stabbed a total of sixteen times before the perpetrator vanishes. Hartnell survives and later recalls the suspect as a heavyset man clad in a black, executioner style hood and cross-hair symbol drawn on his torso with greasy brown hair.
Murder (October 11th, 1969 - Geary Street): At 9:35 The Zodiac enters the cab of Paul Stine, directing him to drop him off at Cherry Street. At 9:55pm Paul Stine is shot and killed by Zodiac; at the same time the murder is witnessed by three teenagers. The teenagers and other witnesses later recall the suspect as a 35-45 year old male with reddish-brown crew-cut hair, a medium to heavy-build and who was wearing heavy rim glasses. This description is used as the basis for the police sketch.
Event (October 14th, 1969): Another letter is received by the Zodiac containing a portion of Paul Stine’s shirt and multiple threats.
Aftermath: More letters by The Zodiac were received by newspapers, most prominently the chronicle. Notable highlights of these letters include The Zodiac claiming to have taken the lives of up to 37 victims, a letter that supposedly had his name coded into it, a plan to use a technically plausible bomb, a letter claiming the murder of one Sgt. Radetich, a letter written entirely in cypher stating he believed his victims will work as his slaves in the afterlife, a custom made halloween card meant to be received by reporter Paul Avery and a letter that alluded to the idea he was the kidnapper of Kathleen Johns thus giving credence to the Lawrence Kane hypothesis. The Zodiac Killer has also been the main suspect in multiple other cases, such as Betsy Aardsma case where a college-aged girl was murdered by a stab wound to the torso.
Typological Analysis
Serial killers can usually be organized into six typologies each with their own unique incentive, ideas, thoughts and methods of killing. These types are the organized killer, the disorganized killer, the visionary killer, the mission-oriented killer, the hedonistic killer and the power-oriented killer.
Typology of the Zodiac Killer
The Zodiac Killer is an example of a mixture between two types, mainly a visionary and hedonistic (thrill variety) killer. The visionary killer is driven not usually by thrill or enjoyment but rather by a break from reality. In some cases, this type of killer shows the unique trait of remorse. On the other hand, the hedonistic thrill killer is driven by the thrill of murder, this type is similar to the power-oriented killer as they both commit murder out of enjoyment, however, the hedonistic killer does not derive gratification from dominating the victim.
An example of his visionary side was displayed in one of his many letters sent to the San Francisco Chronicle where he gloated that he wasn’t afraid of the gas chamber as his murders have already secured him enough slaves for paradise. From this we can assume his dominant incentive for killing was the belief that he needs a certain amount of servants for the afterlife. However, his hedonistic thrill seeker side is usually what is focused on when psychologists or people interested in the case first point out when discussing his psychology. For example, in The Vallejo Times letter he stated that killing was the most thrilling experience and was, “better than getting your rocks off with a girl”, though reasserted his belief in paradise afterward. An interesting thing to note is the Zodiac’s connection between sex and murder.
The organized vs. disorganized concept is another system of criminal typology that uses crime scene analysis. Using this system we can use conjecture to determine certain personality traits (organized killers might have a higher IQ, for example). I’ll use this rating system to figure out his orientation on the O/U scale:
-Restraints: 1
-Victim known: 0
-Stranger targeted: 1
-Poisoned: 0
-Chaotic scene: 1
-Controlled scene: 0
-Weapon planned: 1
-Weapon left: 0
-Body transported: 0
-Act focused: 0
From this ranking we can determine that the Zodiac Killer was directly in between a disorganized and organized killer. However, he matches 5/11 descriptor of a disorganized killer (minimal conversation, sloppy crime scene, minimal use of restraints, body left at crime scene, body left in open) and only 4/11 descriptors of the organized variety (planned offense, victim a stranger, aggressive acts prior to death, absent weapon).
For personality factors we can use the OCEAN model:
-Openness: High. Inquisitive and creative. Created his own suit, strapped a flashlight to his gun and sent coded letters.
-Consciousness: Low. Disorganized and spontaneous. Left victims alive, allowed his face to be seen multiple times and didn’t hide victims.
-Extraversion: Unknown. Likely low. Introversion is associated with disorganized killers.
-Agreeableness: Low. Uncooperative and hostile. Crime behavior and taunted police.
-Neuroticism: Mid to low. Moderately emotional and anxious. Was possibly anxious during the course of the Mageau attack, however was perceived as calm and monotone in other murders.
Speculation, Comparisons to Other Killers, Psychological Profiles
We know that the Zodiac Killer could be profiled into both the visionary and hedonistic category based off motivation. However, what could possibly be the cause for these behaviors and what could be gleamed from these classifications? A good method for this type of speculation is by comparing him to other serial killers with similarities in already established psychology. So here are some related speculations.
-It’s possible that the Zodiac Killer gleamed sexual gratification from murder. Yang Xinhai, another hedonistic killer, stated he felt sexual satisfaction after killing his victims. It’s possible his specific type of victim (teenage couples) gave him the most satisfaction.
-When considering the fact he didn’t assault the victims afterward, his teasing of the police and creation of different methods of murder it could be assumed the Zodiac Killer enjoyed not killing on its own but rather the game of murder. He could’ve been hedonistic in the sense he gleamed pleasure from committing a murder, perfecting it and then getting away with it while receiving ludicrous amounts of media attention.
-It’s possible the Zodiac Killer has some form of schizophrenia, psychosis or a Cluster A personality disorder. David “Son of Hope” Berkowitz was strikingly similar to the Zodiac. Berkowitz and the Zodiac both killed couples, both killed their victims while they were in their cars, both sent letters taunting the police, both used guns to murder their victims, both didn’t assault their victims after and both had aspects of the visionary type. Berkowitz was diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia. Berkowitz also gained sexual gratification from the murders, supporting the previous comparison.
-The Zodiac Killer likely took great pride in his public appearance. In his letter about the attack of Michael Mageau he said that he calmly left the scene as to not attract attention to himself, despite Mageau asserting he had left quickly in a panic. At the Lake Berryessa attack the Zodiac wore a specialized suit complete with a symbol on the torso. Sure this is strange on its own but the stranger part is that there’d be no need to wear the suit if he was planning on killing both victims, which indicates that he wore it because he wanted to tailor his image to his persona. The Zodiac even admitted this himself when he complained that he didn’t believe he got as much media attention as he deserved. All of this culminates with the Zodiac’s statement saying he didn’t look like the police sketch made of him, which could be his attempt to draw the public’s attention away from who he is under the façade of the notorious, mysterious and inventive Zodiac Killer.
-Another comparison could be made to Dennis “BTK’ Radar. Radar and the Zodiac both sent letters and penned their own name. Radar was diagnosed with narcissistic personality disorder, this could very well coincide with the Zodiac’s need for admiration and recognition.
-If he does fall in line with the “disorganized killer” typology it’s possible he did not travel far from his home to commit the crime, was secluded or asocial and generally worked in a field that didn’t require much talent.
-The female victims of the Zodiac Killer may look like a past girlfriend such as Ted Bundy or any woman associated with pain. 2/3 of his female victims were twenty-two years of age and Betty Lou Jensen and Darlene Ferrin have strikingly similar facial proportions (specifically the spacing between the nose, mouth and eyes and the size of those areas). This could also link to sexual satisfaction being taken from murder.
-He was more focused on killing women over men, evident from him failing to kill the male side of the couple in two murders. Possibly this the result of a damaged ego after rejection as if he’s trying to regain power over women. This could be a result of his introversion linked to unorganized killers. This could also possibly disprove the hedonistic killer theory in favor of the power-oriented killer theory.
From this we can assume three possible motivations:
-Paranoid or odd beliefs
-Sexual gratification
-Misogyny
Jungian Analysis
Carl Jung (born July 26th, 1871 - died June 6th, 1961) was an early Swiss psychoanalyst and apprentice of Freud. Many of the concepts he built upon and created are still in use today including the concepts of introversion/extraversion, archetypes, the subconscious, the unconscious and persona.
Use of Intuition
Intuition, explained simply, is the unconscious process which allows the user to see into or perceive conditions that are not obvious through logical thought. It presents its conclusions as whole or complete in the mind of the user. It's the ability for one to perceive and expect possible motions without logical deliberation. For example, one may get a bad feeling about an apple because it subconsciously reminds them of an apple pie they hated.
The Zodiac Killer represents the perfect picture of an extroverted intuitive killer. Instead of receding from the object to transpose his internalized view of abstracted images from the subconscious onto the environment around him, the Zodiac Killer’s intuition is in good relation to the object. He’s not oriented toward transposing his view of the abstracted image onto the object but rather interested in the object's pre-existing string of possibilities and abstracted images as if he was searching for chaos.
We could also see use of intuition in the very concept of The Zodiac Killer. The perpetrator of these crimes comprises his self of the multiple abstracted characteristics of what the symbol of the Zodiac Killer is. He tries to inhabit a single symbol of multiple characteristics including strength, mysteriousness, intelligence, creativity, etc. Though he may or may not inhabit any of these characteristics.
Archetypes
On the topic of personas or symbols of self, in this paragraph we’ll discuss his use of The Joker symbol. Throughout his violent escapades he takes on the form of someone rather unaffected by conventional morals, beliefs or attention to organization. He rather takes on the persona of someone humorous, who likes playing games and is free form all conventional forms of organization. It seems as if the main archetype he tries to inhabit is the Joker, even if subconsciously.
Outro
The last Zodiac Letter was received in 1974, the last murder was in 1969 and all likely suspects are now dead. Even after all that time the remaining notoriety of this case is staggering, and new suspects are still coming up today. Even more staggering yet, after all that the case is still likely to never be solved.
[Fic] The Invitation
I just had to get this fic out of my system before watching S2 of Witcher! Go Jaskier! You are mortal but you still rock! Garrrrgh!
AO3 Link
Summary: The invitation was on a piece of weighted copper paper, embossed with crest, fit for a king or a state council, not for a poor literature student like him living in a tiny studio in San Francisco. Meanwhile, he life blended into stories from his textbook on medieval folklores when a silver haired man and a lilac eyed women kept calling him Jaskier, a name tasted familiar on his tongue but felt like it no longer belonged.
Excerpt:
He rubbed his hands, like he always did when about to present the conclusion of his thesis to the professors.
“We were lovers.” He nodded to Geralt, certain that he cracked the mystery of the unspoken words.
The pupils of these yellow eyes dilated to a full circle. Speckles of ash dropped from the puff to his broad chest, and the witcher paid them no mind. “No. You travelled with me only to collect monster tales for your songs.”
Gosh, did this man really believe that? Such a cliché excuse that even a high school girl could see through in a second and laugh at its unoriginality.
“Geralt, your Jaksier who was a human had spent a third of his life, if not half considering the average life expectancy in the 1500s, traveling with a witcher.” None other than the Butcher of Blaviken. “I don’t think hiking in the open would be pleasant. I-yourJaskier did not even use a knife, but he would put up with gores and bits of a kikimore’s intestines at the hunt for twenty years? For inspiration for songs? Like he cannot just make it up? Pssh. And he called himself an artist.”
What should have been common sense had the effect of a plaguing revelation on the witcher, who seemed to be slammed by the weight of it.
“But he—you—Jaskier never said anything.”
He tried again. “Your Jaskier must have loved you very much.”
He imagined he could have loved this man in his past time, this witcher. He still might, as he saw the other man drawing a long breath, the light already gone off on the cigarette, wheezing for air. He made a sound like a howl of an injured wolf’s when the animal finally felt an old thorn stabbed through his lung.
The two of them must have been such a pair of clueless and hopeless fools. No wonder the other version of him had fallen head over heels with this man.
HISTORY OF THE CECIL HOTEL
I recently watched “Crime Scenes” on Netflix. I remember the Elisa Lam case when it happened back in 2013, I remember how this particular case managed to leave an impression on me and many others around the world. I was for some reason completely captivated by this case and desperately wanted it to be solved. Sadly over the years the case began to fade away from peoples memories including mine however watching this documentary has flared up mine and many other peoples interest in the case again. In the documentary, the dark history of the Cecil hotel is discussed which intrigued me so I decided to make a complete timeline of the dark and tragic history of the Cecil Hotel.
The hotel has a history of death, suicide, murder and attracting serial killers. The Cecil Hotel is a budget hotel on what is known as “Skid Row” in downtown Los Angeles. “Skid Row” is home to a very large number of homeless people. Violent crime and drugs are rife on Skid Row which some people say is the reason for the tragedies that have occurred at the hotel however there are other hotels in the area and weirdly enough the other hotels don’t appear to have suffered the amount of tragedy that the Cecil Hotel has which I personally find odd.
HISTORY OF THE CECIL HOTEL
The Cecil Hotel opened on the 20th of December in 1924, the hotel was built by William Banks Hanner, an established hotelier. The hotel was intended to be a sophisticated hotel that catered to travelling businessmen and those of high social status. The hotel was opulent and refined, it had a marbel lobby, opulent staircase and stained glass windows, it was the high class hotel that it set out to be.
Two years later The Great Depression hit and many of Hanner’s clientele went broke which caused the hotel to suffer financially, and the hotel quickly went from a luxury hotel for travelling businessmen to a place that housed homeless people and criminals.
The police spent days searching for Lam starting at the hotel but were unable to find her so they returned to the hotel and asked to see the footage from the security cameras around the hotel. After going through hours upon hours of footage finally police came across a video of Lam in the hotel elevator, Lam gets into the elevator and begins to press the buttons but the door wont close. Lam then gets out of the elevator and begins to behave oddly before leaving the elevator never to be seen again. On the 19th of February maintenance worker Santiago Lopez went up to check out the hotel water tanks after guests had complained of low water pressure and the water from the taps tasting weird, when he opened one of the tanks he discovered the body of Elisa Lam floating around inside the tank. How she got into the tank no one knows, the door to get to the rooftop has an electronic lock which can only be opened with a code that is only known by the hotel staff. An autoposy was done on Lam’s body however the autoposy showed up nothing and her death was ruled as accidental drowning.
Paul Knowles
Tumblr media
Paul John Knowles, also known as the Casanova Killer, was an American serial killer known to have had at least 20 victims in 1974.
Knowles was born in Florida and grew up in foster homes after being convicted of a petty crime. He was first incarcerated at 19-years-old. In early 1974, Knowles was serving time at the prison when he began corresponding with Angela Covic who made a trip to visit Knowles. Covic and Knowles quickly got engaged and Covic quickly helped Knowles get released from prison by paying for his legal counsel. When he was released Knowles flew to California to be with her. After a psychic warned her of a dangerous man in her life Covic ended the relationship. Although it has never been verified Knowles later claimed after his rejection from Covic he killed three people on the streets of San Francisco before returning to Jacksonville, Florida. He was arrested and detained for stabbing a bartender in a fight but picked his cell lock and escaped on 26th July 1974.
Knowles' murder spree began on the night of his escape, he broke into the home of a 65-year-old woman, bound and gagged her and burgled her home. The woman choked to death on her gag. While abandoning the car he stole in the burglary, Knowles saw two young family acquaintances, 11-year-old Lillian Anderson and 7-year-old Mylette Anderson, out of fear they would identify them he kidnapped them both, strangled them and buried their bodies in a swamp.
Soon after, in August, Knowles murdered a teenaged girl walking home. He then either persuaded or forced a 49-year-old woman to let him into her apartment before strangling her and stealing her television. Weeks later, Knowles went to Georgia, forced his way into a home and strangled a mother but left her 3-year-old son unharmed. Knowles continued his murder spree, usually killing women who he abducted and strangled. Some of his victim's bodies were never found.
On 16th November, Knowles was pulled over for driving a stolen car, he was able to take the officer's pistol and took the police officer as a hostage in his patrol car. Knowles used the stolen patrol car to stop another motorist to steal a new, less conspicuous vehicle. Knowles took his two hostages into a wooded area and shot them both in the head. Shortly after he crashed the car into a roadblock and escaped on foot firing shots at the pursuing officers.
On 17th November, Knowles was eventually cornered by an armed civilian during a focused search of the area. The police were called. In custody, Knowles claimed responsibility for 35 murders but only 20 were ever corroborated.
On 18th December 1974, Knowles was being escorted to retrieve a handgun he had earlier disposed of. During the journey, Knowles took the handgun from one of the officers and a fight ensued in which Knowles was shot three times and killed.
