The sword of the day is the rope dart.
Tumblr media
The rope dart, or *shéng biāo*, is a rather unusual weapon used in Chinese martial arts. It consists of, as the name implies, a sharp steel dart on the end of a rope, usually around 10-15 feet (3-5 meters). It is used by swinging the dart to build momentum before launching it at a target, whereupon the attached rope allows the user to retrieve the weapon easily. Like most flexible weapons, it requires an enormous amount of training and practice to use effectively and also to avoid hurting oneself, so it was by no means a common weapon. It is, however, *extraordinarily* flashy and cool to watch.

Kungfu soft weapon by Sifu Ding Xiaoyuan 👊
The so-called flexible or soft weapons are referring to a type of weapon that varies in length during handling; projectiles, sectional chains, whips, tri-sticks.

I am filled with excitement, nerves, dread, and pride to announce that I am taking part in the @mlbigbang this year. Starting January 8, I will be posting my Sabine fic, A Small but Stubborn Fire! AHHHHHH!
First, the team! The incomparable @uptoolateart beta read my fic, and helped shepherd it along. I've also got @naz-artz and @izanogi helping me bring visuals to Sabine's story. So many others have helped in great and small ways, and I'm overwhelmed with the support the community has given me since I decided to write my lil story. Which became a big story.
Synopsis: What if you were the parent of a teenage superhero, but didn't know they were? All you know is the nightmares, the panic attacks, and the bruises. She's missing school, she's disappearing on you, and she's not telling you anything.
So you assume the worst: Assault. Depression. She doesn't trust you anymore.
And what do you do when you realize you weren't thinking dark enough? That your fourteen-year old daughter is the hero who flirts with death on the nightly news.
More below the fold:
AO3-Style Tags: Marinette & Sabine; Tom/Sabine; minor Adrienette; Marinette Dupain Cheng; Sabine Cheng; Tom Dupain; Adrien Agreste; Rolland Dupain; Gina Dupain; Good Mother Nathalie Sancoeur; Sabine's mother!; Sabine's sister!; angst; hurt/comfort; Chinese culture; happy ending; inter-generational trauma; Sabine's mom, Gabriel, and Tomoe should start a Bad Parents Club; SABINE KNOWS KUNG FU; IDENTITY REVEAL; IDENTITY SHENANIGANS; SO MUCH DRAMATIC IRONY; Nobody better forget Marinette is half-Chinese; etc.
Excerpt:
She was surprised at how easy she found it to invade Marinette’s privacy this morning, and how quick she was to turn critical. It was Marinette’s diary, after all—she could write as sloppy as she wanted. Trust her.
“I’ll be back down in a sec, Alya. I can’t believe I forgot my backpack!” shouted Marinette from a few feet away. Sabine startled, but couldn’t see any way to avoid getting caught.
“Maman! What are you doing?!”
She spun around, schooling her face not to betray her guilt. “I thought I had left my ring up here last night after your latest nightmare. I was hoping you’d found it but forgotten it on your desk.”
Marinette ran over and scooped her diary up from her desk, closed it, and hugged it to her chest. ”The ring…on your finger?”
“What?” Caught. Sabine looked down at her trembling fingers. “Yes! Oh, haha! Silly me, it was right there the whole time! Oh, please don’t tell your father, he’ll tease me for days.”
“...right.” Marinette shifted from one foot to the other, seemingly unable to stay still. Sabine wondered if it was just the invasion of privacy that had Marinette anxious.
Marinette gulped loudly. She slapped her free hand over her mouth and laughed nervously. Then she spun around and rushed to her backpack, sliding the diary inside.
Sabine was proud of herself that in the end she hadn’t peeked, but at the same time she wished her eyes had accidentally scanned a few pages. She wanted the knowledge, but knew she shouldn’t get it this way.
She walked to the attic door and stepped through to the ladder. As she took the rungs one at a time, she ran her hand along the trim of the door, feeling the wood grain beneath her fingers, and she paused. “Marinette? You know I love you very much, right?”
“Of course!”
“And you don’t think I’m too hard on you?”
Marinette tilted her head and looked at her, her eyes revealing confusion and concern. “No, not at all! Maman, is there something wrong?“
Sabine angled her face down when she realized she was straining to smile. She inspected the ladder like she needed to pay attention while she descended, as if she hadn’t been doing this every day for years.
“No, nothing’s wrong. Sometimes parents want what’s best for their kids but don’t know if they’re doing the right thing.”
She heard Marinette shuffle toward the hatch and felt a hand slide over hers . There was Marinette, crouched low, moving her forehead in to touch hers, smiling broadly.
“I’m so happy you’re my mother. Don’t worry about a thing; I’m not going anywhere.” Her phone tolled with incoming messages, probably from Alya. “Ahhh!!! Except to school! Because I’m late! And grounded! Move, Maman!”

Neckspin into the Shoulder Shot for the Rope Dart! Lots of fun! Hey, so what kind of community is Tumblr? Would it be cool with y'all if I dress up in some Martial Arts Cosplay gear, and do some of these Rope Dart shots? I don't feel safe doing that on YouTube for some reason. It seems like there are more artist types here, that might accept me doing stuff like that? Heck, if you encourage me, I may plop down the $60 and buy a Scorpion costume, and do this!!

I am about to let you all in on a writing tip/secret I kept for myself:
When writing a fight scene, watch actual fights. No not what they do in tv. But actual fights. MMA, Wrestling (Not WWE, we know that the E is more important that’s the Second W for them) and videos on weaponuse.
This may help you visualize how you want a fight to go and if it is actually possible, even if it’s a fantasy (you can add magical elements but there’s always a good point to have it mildly grounded in actual physics and body mechanics.)
For Example, I am writing a lil scuffle for the third part of His “Side Kick In The Chair” No Longer. Pavitr’s movements are inspired by an Indian Martial Art (Kalaripayattu) canonically*.
That led me on a journey to find a weapon that is Spider Man-like, Symbiote- like, adds a pizzazz to a fight like the movements of Pav would already bring and keep the user on the ground (it’ll make sense when I post and you read the fic). And that’s when I found it:
Note: I don’t really count the webs or Pav’s bracelets as weapons because while the webs can inconvenience someone, it can’t really hurt them without the aid of another object i;e at the end of Andrew Garfield’s second spider man move, when he lifts the man hole cover to fling it at Rhino. And imagine getting whacked by a bracelet, I would be too stunned that I got hit with a jewelry store exclusive to put up a fight.
A Rope Dart.
youtube
This video is extremely helpful because it shows how the bones and muscles will have to move to make it work and thus, easier to write.
ALSO JUST LOOKAT THE SKILL
*I thought I read or watched it somewhere so don’t take that as gospel.

ObSESSEd with Ratohnhaké:ton using Shao Jun's sheng biao/rope dart.
I know people who've trained with similar weapons, but not rope darts, so I looked it up, and Chinese side of YouTube calls it the "ghost soldier," because it's too quick for the eye to always catch.
I just think of how that describes Ratohnhaké:ton a lot, because he's the Hidden One without whom some of the major victories and turning points in the Revolutionary War wouldn't have happened.
It also describes the mystery of his later life (aggressive stare at ubeesofty) because his legacy has been so shrouded by Templar disinformation.

Chapter 13: The Knitting Fairy
This is my story about Sabine & Marinette for the @mlbigbang. The story is from Sabine's POV as she tries to figure out what has been traumatizing her little girl (who, by the way, will not tell her anything).
Thanks also to @uptoolateart and @raspberrycatapult. These two absolute legends get me through the gauntlet chapter in and chapter out.
Synopsis
Sabine trains Ladybug in martial arts. She needs a little miraculous help to keep up. And then an old friend she'd once had for dinner shows up.
Extract
Sabine still wasn’t sure how she felt about sharing her home with a god. She seemed nice enough, but didn’t gods usually come with words like Ragnarok, Armageddon, and...Cataclysm?
At least she didn’t live with whatever god gave Chat Noir that ability. What would it be like to break bread with something that could end reality?
What if her partner ever went crazy and touched Marinette with that power? Could the Goddess of Creation hold off the Goddess of…Destruction?
Sabine felt the blood drain from her face, recalling what she’d read in Marinette’s diary. She had been so high on adrenaline and fear that her memories were a threadbare quilt, unraveling even as it was stitched together. There was something about Chat Noir, and…
Her skin froze, and she felt like someone had curled their fingers under her rib cage and pressed up into her organs. Our love did this to the world.

I have two DnD characters
My first one is Strife, son of Mizery (my cat)
A Tabaxi rouge-fighter multiclass, and pirate (formerly) aboard the spelljamming vessel “the Dreaded Duchess”
The second is Friedrich Von Berdusk.
A human fighter, with a warrior-philosopher background. (He’s loosely based on a mashup of Friedrich Nietzche, and a landsknecht mercenary from the 16th century).
I intend to use this blog to tell some of their stores as they have unfolded so far, and how they progress into the future.
Let me know if yall want to hear more about them
-Nelson

Lateral Swing Shot! It looks relatively simple, but the timing is a little tricky at first. And then there's issuing enough force to penetrate an object with relatively loose suspension!

New Piper design!!! They’re in a Treasure Planet-inspired setting and in a whole new class configuration! This should be interesting!
Had to give them the Jim Hawkins haircut… mostly because I also have it, but what better place to pay such stylish tribute? I’ve wanted to be Jim since 2002, the amount of gender euphoria streaming off that boy has never wavered.
And, I ended up taking up a new hobby from them! I spin oxbow meteor now!
[Image: a digital drawing of my sorcerer/warlock, Piper. They are a young teen with very shiny copper hair that is fluffy on top and pulled into a tiny braid at the nape, ambiguously human save for the slight downward point of their ears. They have light golden skin covered in freckles of various sizes and a mischievous smile, and they stand confidently brandishing a double-ended rope dart (a weapon comprised of a long, red rope with a shiny copper weight at either end). They are wearing loose, green trousers cuffed at the ankle and tied with a twisted red belt, a nondescript black undershirt (hezi), a dark teal jacket with wide, loose sleeves (banbi), a lighter teal sleeveless jacket with an orange parallel collar (bijia), and no shoes. All the teal and green fabrics have faint patterns, floral or geometric. They have a mischievous expression with a closed, cat-like smile. To the side there is this text, bullet-pointed with tiny gears: “Piper Copperchild • 8 14 14 12 10 17 • Clockwork Soul • Hexblade • Beloved by the Patina • Fourteen years old • Sorcerer who hits things, for some reason”. The word “Patina” is fainter and glitching slightly. Beneath that is a headshot of them in profile with a demure expression, in a slightly less simplified style, where the undercut of their hair becomes visible, darker where it’s shaved short, and matching their eyebrows. They have rounded features and dark, soulful eyes. The background is of the whole image is teal with rusty brown splotches and a faint grid, with their head framed stylistically by a fourteen-petaled-and-houred clock. End ID.]
(Also… backstory design and some notes under the cut…)
Tumblr media
I wanted their current design to look like it could have been salvaged from the remains of its predecessor (though I don’t really know how their clothes could have survived what they would have been through… shhh, magic)! They’ve cut themself a new name in a similar fashion, just by hacking off the damaged (and damaging) and constricting pieces of it that never suited them. Their new outfit is far more practical for their activities and their personality, as out of the enclave of the cult they don’t have to conform their behaviour, but they are still in all the same colours, as they still carry with them its beliefs. As they grow and learn and eventually embrace becoming who they want to be rather than the person everyone else has always wanted them to be, they will begin to wear their own colours (which I already have a palette for that I love. Piper belongs in sunny oranges and yellows).
[Image: the same as above, but with a few changes, chiefly to Piper’s appearance: their hair is longer and pulled into a topknot with a golden ornament (xiaoguan), with a long, irregularly curly strand left loose on either side of their face. Their outfit is comprised of most of the same fabrics: a pleated, light teal, ankle-length skirt, with a yellow waistband over the chest that’s belted with a long, red ribbon (qixiong ruqun), over an orange sleeveless jacket with a familiar collar (bijia), which itself is over a dark teal robe with long, wide sleeves (daxiushan), and a nondescript brown robe beneath. Their name over in the text on the side is “Piety in Perseverance”. The background is devoid of the rust splotches. End ID.]
