Don’t mind me, just hyper-fixating on how these two are always aware of what’s happening to each other in battle.

Hi so me being me I've decided to hyperanalyze the conversation Qrow and Raven had in Higanbana practically line by line bcus I have Many Thoughts and this is the best way I can think of to get them all out. If you can't tell I'm absolutely obsessed with these two. Btw.
Thanks to the RWBY wiki for providing transcripts for every episode, otherwise I definitely would have missed smth despite having just watched this scene recently lol
I put it under the read more for easier scrolling due to how long this post got!
I immediately noticed smth in the very first lines of the interaction:
Raven: "Hello, brother." Qrow: "...Raven."
You'll notice throughout the whole conversation that Raven never calls Qrow by his name, only condescendingly referring to him as "brother" this one time and never calling him anything else. Meanwhile, Qrow directly refers to Raven a total of three times throughout the conversation, and only one doesn't call Raven by her name (which we'll get to shortly)
On the other hand, Qrow doesn't bother with even so much as a greeting beyond simply stating Raven's name
It's different ways of communicating their distance. While Raven holds her relationship with Qrow over his head — never once, even outside of this scene, does she call him "brother" with affection iirc, only derision and condescension — Qrow doesn't seem to rly know how to greet her. He hesitates before saying her name and approaching her, as if trying to assess the situation before acting
Qrow: "So, what do you want?" Raven: "A girl can't just catch up with her family?" Qrow: "She can, but you're not. Now how 'bout we get on with it? Unless you plan on keeping these [drinks] comin'."
Again, Raven seems to bring up her familial ties with Qrow as a tactic to get him to do what she wants — in this case, stick around to talk to her despite him not seeming to rly want to. Frankly, it feels manipulative. We're gonna put a pin in this for now and come back to it in just a moment
Additionally, Qrow already knows that Raven's not just here for a friendly chat between two siblings, and sees right thru her facade that it is. Raven is here bcus she wants smth from him. But interestingly, it is Raven in V5 that says, in an almost frustrated/disappointed tone, "Family. Only coming around when they need something." There's another pin; keep both in mind
Raven: "Does she have it?" Qrow: "...Did you know Yang lost her arm?" Raven: "That's not—" Qrow: "Rhetorical question, I know you know. It's just obnoxious that you'd bring up family and then carry on like your own daughter doesn't exist." Raven: "I saved her." Qrow: "Once. Because that was your rule, right? Real 'Mom of the Year' material, sis."
Qrow dodges Raven's question about the Relic and instead brings up her hypocrisy in how she treats family. And it's a good point. Here she is lording her siblingship with Qrow over his head while simultaneously defending and upholding her rule that she is only obligated to help her own daughter a single time. Another pinpoint on our little conspiracy board
Also, here's the one time in this conversation Qrow refers to Raven as "sis". Like Raven's use of "brother", Qrow's use of "sis" is very pointed and with intent. But it's not to manipulate Raven, it's a snarky jab meant to rly hammer home Qrow's point
Raven: "I told you Beacon would fall, and it did. I told you Ozpin would fail, and he has. Now you tell me. Does. Salem. Have it?" Qrow: "I thought you weren't interested in all of that." Raven: "I just want to know what we are up against." Qrow: "And which 'we' are you referring to?"
A few things of note here. At some point in the past, Raven expressed an outright disinterest in Ozpin's inner circle, at least to Qrow. Qrow also feels excluded in the "we" Raven mentions being against Salem. To me, there seems to be a distinct possibility here that it wasn't that Raven felt personally disinterested in Ozpin's operations, but that she somehow felt excluded and feigned a lack of interest in order to protect herself. An idea that is further supported in my eyes by the following dialogue:
Qrow: "You should come back, Raven. The only way we'd beat her is by working together. All of us." Raven: "You're the one who left. The tribe raised us, and you turned your back on them." Qrow: "They were killers and thieves." Raven: "They were your family." Qrow: "You have a very skewed perception of that word."
And there it is. Raven's problem is laid out here for us, loud and clear: She feels like she was the one abandoned, not the one running away. She says it outright! "You're the one who left." To her, Qrow is the traitor, the one who left their family behind. If you ask Qrow (or, for that matter, Tai, Yang, and even Summer based on the scene in V9), it's the opposite
Bcus they have different definitions of family
Another thing to pin (I promise this will all become clear soon)
Raven: "I lead our people now. And as leader, I will do everything in my power to ensure our survival." Qrow: "I saw. The people of Shion saw, too." Raven: "The weak die. The strong live. Those are the rules." Qrow: "Well, you've certainly got someone strong on your side. I've seen the damage." Raven: "We couldn't have known the Grimm would set in as quickly as they did." Qrow: "I'm not talking about the Grimm. And I'm not talking about you, either."
Notice Raven's shift from "the tribe" to "our people". More of that guilt tripping!
Additionally, Raven is *obsessed* with rules. One save. The weak die, the strong live. Raven lives and breathes rules, even seemingly arbitrary ones. Guess what this is? Another pin!
Raven: "If you don't know where the Relic is, then we have nothing left to talk about." Qrow: "I don't know where the Spring Maiden is, either, but if you do, I need you to tell me." Raven: "And why would I do that?" Qrow: "Because without her, we're all going to die." Raven: "...And which 'we' are you referring to?"
Qrow's "either" here implies that he also doesn't know where the Crown of Choice is, which is... interesting. He's one of Ozpin's closest lieutenants, and is in the dark on where Beacon's Relic is? Wherever it is, it is such a closely kept secret that even Ozpin's best spy doesn't know where it is (maybe so that in the event Qrow gets captured by Salem he can't be forced into giving her the information?)
Meanwhile, Raven's "And why would I [tell you]?" implies that she does know who the Spring Maiden is (obviously. Raven's the Spring Maiden lol) but refuses to disclose to Qrow
A lantern sputters out after Qrow says "Without [Spring] we're all going to die." Now, I genuinely can't remember if this is headcanon or canon, but iirc Misfortune seems to act up when Qrow's upset. He's clearly tired of this little game of dancing around topics that Raven's been playing with him
And once again, Raven indicates a feeling of exclusion from Qrow's life in the iconic final line. She gets the final word in before leaving
We've finally reached the end of the conversation. Now what does all of this tell us?
And here is where all of those pins I wrote down are relevant. As I mentioned, the twins view family very differently
Qrow's view is pretty obvious: he views family as the ppl in his life who matter most to him. Unlike Raven, he does not view the tribe as family despite the fact that they raised him, disgustedly referring to them as "killers and thieves". It's implied that he was, in fact, neglected and/or likely abused by the Branwen tribe, saying in V6C4, "No one wanted me... I was cursed..." further explaining his distaste for them. Furthermore, despite not being related to Ruby by blood, they clearly consider one another family throughout the series, and he even seems closer to her than he seems to his niece who's actually blood related to him (I personally headcanon that he keeps more of a distance from Yang bcus she reminds him too much of Raven, who he feels abandoned and hurt by, but that's neither here nor there). Bloodlines and debts are secondary compared to loyalty, if they're considered at all. He is obviously furious that Raven only insists on saving Yang once and never directly interacting with her beyond that, despite Raven constantly guilting Qrow over abandoning his so-called "family" of the tribe. And yet. And yet. He still offers Raven a place back in his life, even if only to unite against Salem
Raven's view, to me, has been an enigma for a while. But after hyperanalyzing this conversation, after noting down all of those points of interest, I feel like I've finally cracked the code. Raven views family as an obligation, an exchange that always has an ulterior motive behind it. She seeks out Qrow only bcus she desires smth from him despite showing distaste when someone does the same to her; condescendingly calls Qrow "brother" more than his actual name and calls the tribe their "family" to try guilting him into doing what she wants; and feels fierce loyalty to the tribe but barely interacts with her daughter, only seeming to count one of the two as true family. She views the concept of family with cynicism and seems to feel an obligation to the tribe, as if she "owes" them for raising her
I think the two's perceptions of what defines family are all to do with the way the tribe treated both of them. This crosses a bit into headcanon territory, but as you can see by the above quotes and analysis, I rly don't think I'm just making it up entirely
As I already mentioned, I think it's implied that the Branwen tribe neglected/abused Qrow. In fact, we could probably blame their treatment of him for the deep self-loathing he has due to his "cursed" Semblance. But what about Raven?
Well, it's simple: I think she was abused, too, just in a different way. While Qrow was likely shown and told on a consistent basis that he was unwanted, unloved, undeserving of good things, Raven may have been shown and told she was wanted, loved, and deserving of good things... if she did what the tribe told her. If she repaid them for raising her and her brother, for being her "family". The way she uses her familial ties with Qrow as almost blackmail may be exactly the way the tribe treated her. Her obsession with following rules may stem from the fact that she had to follow the rules the tribe set for her in order to be accepted and deemed worth smth
As for her distance from Yang... honestly, I wonder if Raven is aware that Yang deserves better and keeps her distance as her way of doing that. When Summer confronts Raven in the V9 scene, Raven says, "...You're better at that life. Better than I was." She seems to have a fear and insecurity about being a good family member, a good mother, and maybe that's why she fled. Maybe she was scared of being like her abusers due to how she emulates them as a self-preservation tactic in so many other ways. Not entirely sure about this point tho
And I think too this is why the twins don't rly understand one another. They may have been unaware of the different ways in which the other was treated. Qrow, constantly unwanted and loathed, can't understand why Raven sticks around with the tribe; Raven, who obeyed the tribe and, in doing so, garnered enough of their favor to even eventually become leader, can't understand why Qrow can't just be "good", earn respect, and stay
This dissonance between the two experiences may also be completely intentional on the part of the tribe; abusers will often eliminate their targets' support systems in order to make them completely reliant on the abuser, so it's highly likely that the wedge was intentionally driven between the two siblings so that they could not find support in one another. This would also tie into why the twins seem to feel excluded from one another's lives and abandoned by one another: bcus they were made to feel that way by their common abusers, and did nothing to challenge these assumptions bcus they saw no reason to — and only seemed to keep proving one another right if they did
Which rly has some disturbing implications about how the Branwen tribe works. Like, do they just pick orphaned kids up off the street and abuse them into being perfect little bandits, molded to be of the greatest possible use and discarded if they're deemed worthless? Plus Qrow says his Semblance is how he got his name, which implies that the tribe also renames the kids they scoop up (possibly as a form of control or a way to make sure they can't be tracked down by any remaining family)? Plus there's the whole thing where Qrow and Raven were originally sent to Beacon to learn how to kill Huntsmen, which carries with it the implication that the Branwen tribe grooms literal orphan children into becoming stone-hearted murderers? What. The heck.
And if I'm right, if the Branwen tribe is that severely abusive, then like... wow, no wonder Qrow and Raven are Like That. They're both very deeply hurt people expressing it in different ways
I was considering adding their conversation at the Battle of Haven to this post, but I think that would be better as its own thing. Also I haven't gotten there on my rewatch yet so I may miss some details if I try to analyze it rn; it's better to wait overall methinks
But I have reached the point of my rewatch where we see Weiss and Whitley interact, and I think it would be very efficient to sum up what Qrow and Raven's relationship seems to be by using those siblings as a point of reference. Qrow = Weiss, actively trying to break free from and fight back against their abusers in different ways, while Raven = Whitley, continuing to do as their abusers want and have wanted as a method of self-preservation. Only, unlike Weiss and Whitley, Qrow and Raven have yet to come to a point where they can understand one another. I think that's a good way to briefly summarize the uh. Absolutely massive post this is.
In conclusion, I may have cracked the majority of the Branwen twins' pre-Beacon backstory purely by hyperanalyzing a single conversation. Oopsies

While I know its unlikely I would really love for one of the next episodes of rwby to show a little bit of why Neo was so mad about Roman's death, like little bits of their friendship to show how close they were, so people who didn't read the book can understand Neo a little better and like. how close Roman and Neo actually were.

You reblogged something once about how sometimes rwby quotes feel out of nowhere or make not a lot of sense for the character or situation. i wondered if you have a least favorite quote for any of the characters, not to like dunk on the writing or anything just like how you said sometimes they're mildly baffling. do you have a least favorite weiss quote? i feel like most of hers are good
That's a good question, thanks for the ask! Well, the dialogue exchange I'd had in mind when reblogging that (I think? It was a long time ago lol) was the end of v6
Ruby: Is it weird that I'm a little nervous?
Yang: No, I'll believe we've made it to Atlas when I see it.
Weiss: Well, believe it.
It just felt... off? Ruby asked about nervousness, not whether they'd actually get there. It feels like Yang's line was just meant to set up Weiss' rather than respond to Ruby's. (Also idk how much time passed on that airship but wow did they get to Atlas fast)
But that's a pretty inconsequential example :P If you're asking for a least favorite Weiss quote... I've got one, and oof, it's a doozy, I'm so sorry XD I can't just share the quote and leave it without explanation, cause it's all about the context, so this may get long. It's not just confusing for the timing or phrasing, but contrary to the situation, and actively (in my opinion) detracts from Weiss' character.
Now, to preface because I know how easy it is to see the beginning of something and assume the rest (especially if the topic is similar to one you've heard ad nauseam & ad hominem): this is not about whether Ruby should've lied to Ironwood. I'm neither debating that morally nor narratively (actually, I liked the initial decision to have Ruby do that; it was an interesting character moment!). This is about this specific line in this scene with these characters and how it impacts the larger message and themes in play. I love Weiss, she's one of my faves, but this particular writing choice irks me.
Ok, with that out of the way, here's my least favorite Weiss quote:
"Everyone thinks what they're doing is right. But usually, they're just looking out for themselves. And their secrets."
This was said to Winter in a scene alone together in v7ch5. She's drawing a clear line between their discovery of Ozpin's secrets and their worry about Ironwood. Which is good! The volume had been establishing the Oz parallel really well: ch 2 when Ruby lies (and Oscar's leitmotif plays during both her lies/half-truths) and glances to Oscar the exact moment he looks away from her in disappointment, and she looks hurt; ch 3 when Yang expresses discomfort with the choice but begrudgingly goes along, asking how Oscar feels about it, and we flash back to Oscar confronting Ruby by saying "doesn't that feel like what Ozpin did to us?" and Ruby looking guilty (as Oscar's motif plays over her once again); ch 4 where Ruby confesses to Qrow she can't tell if what's best is what's right, or if she's no different from Oz (I'm ignoring Qrow's response for now or this'll be way longer lol); ch 5 with this line to Winter.
The issue I have with this line isn't the first sentence, because it's by and large accurate: most people do generally think they're doing what's right. And oftentimes they're actually hiding things to do so. For example: YOU RIGHT NOW, WEISS.
Again, this isn't about whether or not I think the lies were justified. It's about how this line makes her seem like -- and I hate to say it, but it's the most accurate word -- a hypocrite. It'd be one thing if the show addressed this and had her realize that, but it never does. It doubles down in the later scene with the Winter Maiden. Winter says that Ironwood isn't keeping secrets, not from her. Weiss replies, "Can you be sure?" To demonstrate how crucial she is to Ironwood's plan and how much he trusts her, Winter entrusts Weiss with this huge secret: that she's planned to be the next Maiden. But rather than having Weiss reflect on how honest her sister is being with her while she continues to hide the very secrets they resented Ozpin for, she smiles and says they've both carved their own path :)
Eddy in the commentary for v7 said they were going to have Weiss tell Winter the truth there (I'd have to double check for the exact wording), but that "it worked better as Winter telling secrets while Weiss kept them from her." I have to disagree. It would have worked if the narrative addressed it, like if Weiss felt bad about it, or afterwards went to talk to Ruby about it. Maybe asking if she can at least tell Winter, to have Ruby respond that Winter would just tell Ironwood, and they couldn't risk that yet. Then later (and they can still do this in v9), have Ruby feel guilty when Penny gets the powers, knowing her choice to accept them was based on incomplete information, regardless of whether or not the complete info would have changed her decision. That choice is what made Cinder target her. That power is why she died. Just like Pyrrha.
I know Pyrrha had less information about Salem than Winter did at that point (correct me if I'm wrong, it's been awhile since I've watched v3), but in essence, important truths about the dangers of being a Maiden & fighting Salem were kept from them both. After Pyrrha's death and the Fall of Beacon, I'd expect the team to want to prevent anyone else from taking on that burden without knowing the price and full risks. But Weiss didn't bat an eye when told her sister was in the same position. We don't know for certain whether Weiss told her team about the plan offscreen, or what we're supposed to assume, but because it was never brought up and never reflected on, it comes across as Weiss bitterly (I say bitterly bc of the line delivery) insulting Oz and insinuating Ironwood is likely lying to Winter and may not be trustworthy, while she herself continues to remorselessly lie to her.
In one line, it shows her opinion of Oz hasn't changed, her self-justification for lying as an exception to the rule because they're actually "doing what's right" -- the irony of that line would've been so cool to explore -- her disdain of others' secrecy, and her complete lack of self-awareness that she's making accusations of things she herself is doing without a trace of regret or doubt.
It's just a frustrating line to me, because it takes a really interesting morally grey setup for the protagonists, makes it an even darker grey, and instead of challenging it, frames it as a cute sister bonding moment. All while simultaneously showing that despite making essentially the same decisions, the team (or at least Weiss, Qrow, Ruby, and Yang based on her line in the v6 finale) is still blaming and/or resenting Oz rather than reconsidering the difficult position he was in now that they're in it and following suit. Which, tbh, is where I thought that plotline was headed, but that's another conversation :P
If they'd followed it up and had the hypocrisy impact her view or lead to character growth, thus highlighting the complexity of these decisions and setting up the team's understanding of Oz (instead of a flimsy "trust is a risk"), it might have wound up as one of my favorite lines of v7. There was so much potential there, and the choice to ignore it as confirmed in the commentary is one that will forever flabbergast me.
Ok, all done! Sorry if this was too ranty, anon -- I uh. I get kinda carried away in analysis and sometimes come off as more emotional or upset than I am 😅 I just wanted to express my dislike for this line thoroughly to avoid confusion (and hopefully prevent people getting heated in the replies, especially since those often showcase they didn't actually read the whole post and/or took it in bad faith). I'm not bashing or saying you can't like this line or plot point! RWBY is a piece of media I enjoy watching, so when something like this happens that I feel is inauthentic to a character or message, I care about it strongly.

Good day, Given your use of fan drawings and similar media for RWBY and Jaune, have you ever though of doing a small story based on this image? Sadly don`t know who the authors is, would add them if I did.
Tumblr media
Same, I remember seeing this style of art somewhere but I don't remember the name. ------------
Before the disaster: JNPR is on a mission
Pyrrha: Nora, where did you say you got this information about our objective?
Nora: A girl named Neo gave them to me.
Pyrrha: Neo? Neapolitan? As Roman Torchwick left hand man?
Ren: Woman in this case.
Nora: The same one.
Pyrrha: And she gave it to you just because? She didn't ask for anything in return?
Nora: Nah, she asked to eat ice cream from Jaune.
Pyrrha: You meant, eating ice cream with Jaune, right?
Nora: Nop, she said she wanted to eat a Sunday on Jaune's muscles.
Pyrrha: SHE WHAT?!!
Ren: Oh boy.
------------ Back to the present
Jaune: *His hands are tied to the headboard of the bed*
Jaune: *Blushing* C-Can you hurry? It's really cold.
Neo: "Nope, I'll enjoy this until I'm satisfied🤤💕"
Pyrrha: NEO!!!
Jaune: Pyrrha?
Neo: "Oh boy, she's here 🙄"
Pyrrha: How dare you do this to my leader!
Jaune: I'm srry Pyrrha, but it was for the mision
Neo: "Is not a big deal😒"
Pyrrha: Without inviting me!
Jaune: Huh?
Neo: "Wut?😐"
Pyrrha: I brought 1 gallon of Neapolitan ice cream and chocolate syrup. Not extra spoons.
Jaune: No spoons?
Neo: "Oooh~ I see what you're planing😏"
Pyrrha: So... can I?
Neo: "Go ahead😉"
Pyrrha: Grand!
Pyrrha opens her gallon of ice cream and begins scooping it out.
Jaune: Pyrrha? Where are you going to put- Oh god!! It's cold! IT'S COLD!!!

Okay, now that everybody's had some time to process and gotten some of the doomposting out, here's my thoughts on the whole situation.
First of all, I'm not really worried about whether or not RWBY will continue in some capacity. It's uncertain, sure, but no more than it was already. In February we got the update that they were talking to potential partners about getting volume 10 made, so clearly they weren't just relying on Rooster Teeth and Warner Brothers for it - maybe one of those companies will pick it up, maybe a different company will, either way I'm sure it *will* be picked up by somebody and unless they get real unlucky, the show won't be much worse off than it was before - if anything it might be better off, considering that WB have been shitty about animation for quite a while now (if you're not already familiar and you're up for some extra research, I recommend looking into the Coyote vs ACME situation that's been going on recently for a great example of WB's bullshit). And while it's unclear exactly how much involvement the original crew will have in the show's future, I'm pretty optimistic about it. I doubt the writers are going to let go of creative control without a fight, if for nothing else then for Monty - I don't like focusing too much on the whole Monty's Legacy stuff in general, but I do think that the crew are going to want to keep their friend's work alive and authentic and as accurate to what he wanted it to be as possible. None of this is a certainty of course, but I think RWBY is gonna be fine, things will just be kinda rocky for a bit.
With all that being said, while this may end up ultimately being a blessing in disguise for RWBY as a franchise, it sure ain't one for everybody who worked at Rooster Teeth. This entire situation is still horrible - so many people being fired on the spot, effective immediately, with no warning and with several of them only finding out by seeing articles about it being posted on Twitter, it's fucked. I know Rooster Teeth wasn't exactly lacking in controversy and problematic behaviour, to put it lightly, but there were still plenty of amazing people there who are now in a really shitty situation. On top of that, while again this isn't exactly anything new, especially for WB, it is the latest instance of a huge problem in the animation and entertainment industries. So no matter how things pan out for RWBY, we should still be really fucking mad about this.
And we definitely shouldn't be celebrating. I've seen some posts saying "good riddance" and celebrating RT's downfall, not just from people who hate RWBY (I mean don't get me wrong I'm sure the hatedom is out in full force but that's not the kind of thing I'm referring to right now), but people who like/used to like the show and just hated the company. And don't get me wrong, I didn't like a lot of things about the company either, I've actually been wanting RWBY to separate itself from RT for a pretty long time (be careful what you wish for I guess 💀), but there's a time and a place and this certainly ain't it. Plenty of people who have worked there have said that they loved their jobs, plenty of others said it was horrible and toxic and nightmarish, but either way a job is a job and in this industry work isn't always easy to find, especially in recent years. Celebrate in private if you want, but now is not the damn time to be bringing out the cake and confetti.
TLDR; I'm cautiously optimistic about RWBY's future, I'm pretty sure it'll be fine and they'll be able to keep the core crew to at least some extent, but this is still a really bad situation for everybody who just lost their jobs, don't be a dick.

Jaune is geinus rwbys reaction to the puppeteer being jaune
AAAAAAAAAH FINALLY! I CAN ANSWER THIS QUESTION!
Team RWBY: *waiting at the door with both Marie and "Marie". Marie is knocking at the door like a maniac*
Weiss: So, will you explain us why you took your sister's name instead of your own? Do you have so bad of a name?
???: N-no! It's just... Golly it's hard to explain, ok?! When Father will be here, you'll understand.
Ruby: ... I was wondering why you never took out your cloak. You never showed your face either...
???: ... *Sigh* you'll understand soon enough.
The Puppeteer: *opening the door* Marie, calm down! I won't go faster even if you knock more.
Marie: *knock on his head because he wasn't ready to welcome her back at the second ahe arrived*
The Puppeteer: Ok, ok. Gee... *Looking at both team RWBY and his "daughter"* Ah, come on in, i made some tea for everyone.
Marie: *mischievous smile* "not the bad kind i hope?"
The Puppeteer: Of course not! *Opening the door wide* Enter, enter! I was waiting for you.
???: ...
The Puppeteer: That includes you, by the way.
__________
At the table, in the kitchen
Yang: So, who are you?
The Puppeteer: Hm? Me? Depends what you want to hear.
Blake: Your name. What is it?
The Puppeteer: Ah, but i go by many names. The Puppeteer, the man lost to time, the knight of the last maiden, or even-
???: Jaune, his name is Jaune.
Yang: Jaune!? That's impossible!
Blake: Yeah! Weiss told us you didn't feel!
Weiss: I only said i didn't see him fall! *Looking at him* What happened to you?
Ruby: ... Jaune, what happened to Penny?
WBY: *turning to Ruby* ?
The Puppeteer: ... *Sigh* Good job, P, you blew it out. I wanted to explain them what happened a lot less violently.
P: *removing her cloak, revealing her appearance, almost identical to the old Penny* I was unable to keep lying.
Weiss: Penny!? You meant to say that the person who's memory you have is-
P: My name is P, i'm sorry to have mislead you. But when i saw you, all of you, i couldn't bring myself to show you who i am supposed to be.
The Puppeteer: I created her using the blueprint Pietro gave to me before... Well, before everything went to hell.
Ruby: What about...
The Puppeteer: ... *Sigh* Come with me.. She's in my lab.

Bad Jaune had left Ever Alter. He had barely taken the first step in Remmant. He was old again.
Jaune: I should have killed that girl
Weiss was jumping for joy in her mind.
Yang: Look on the bright side—
Yang's sentence was interrupted as Jaune armor crumbled to dust.
Underneath the armor.
Jaune was wearing a black shirt that seemed to be clinging to his body, showing off his muscle very good work.
His arms were strong and huge, full of scars.
Jaune looked at team RWBY.
Weiss had her mouth open and was drooling as blood spurted from her nose.
Blake's face turned red.
Ruby just blinked.
Yang: You are now Dilf! A, your sword shining
Yang pointed to Jaune's sword that had fallen to the ground.
Jaune turned to see that his weapon was indeed emitting a strong glow.
His eyes widened for an instant.
He grabbed his weapon and said something very low.
Jaune: Calm down
All except Blake, who was confused by what Jaune had said.
His weapon stopped glowing, Jaune sighed.
Jaune stood, holding the weapon in his left hand. He wasn't holding his weapon by the hilt, he was holding it by the sheath.
Because he didn't have the accessory to hold his weapon.
Ruby: What happened to your armor?
Jaune: Ruby, that armor should have been destroyed a long time ago
Ruby: ?
Jaune: That armor was rubbish, I wish I had gotten rid of it long ago and replaced it with a new one.
Yang: So.... Why didn't you do it?
Jaune: I was cursed
Ruby: By whom?
Jaune: A cursed creature that I should have killed at the first opportunity. That thing still laughs! Just remembering it makes me angry
His eyes began to glow for a moment.
Weiss: What was the curse
Jaune calmed down.
Jaune: I could never take off my armor. If my armor was destroyed, I would die instantly. Also, the armor would lose its resistance with every hit I took
Blake: But your armor is still quite good
Jaune: It's because of my aura
RWBY: What?
Jaune: It is serious? I was in that place for years, do you think I had no training?
RWBY:.... 😶
Jaune: I spent most of my youth training to improve my fighting skills. This allowed me to develop my skills and to evolve my Semblante
Yang: Then why were you so easy to defeat?
Jaune: Curses also diminish my skills a little
Weiss: Wait a minute. You said your armor didn't break because of your aura right?
Jaune: Yeah
Weiss: But that should be impossible. And who was this creature that cursed you, and why did he or she do it?
Jaune: Why didn't I sleep with her
...
...
Yang: She was sexy?
Blake: YANG!
Yang: There must be a reason he doesn't want to have sex
Weiss: Let's get back to the main topic. Who is this woman
Jaune: None of you know her, her name is not found in any fairy tale
Ruby: So who is she, where did you find her
Jaune: She called herself Merlin. I found her while exploring the underground of that place
Weiss: Does that place have a underground?
Jaune: Yes, I would say or I could say that the underground is better than the surface. I had a good time down there and discovered and learned some really interesting things there.
Yang: Come on, does it really matter if she was sexy or not?
Blake: YANG!
Yang: THAT!?
Jaune: *sigh* Yes, Yang, she was sexy
Yang: So why didn't you sleep with her?
Jaune: Why didn't I want
Yang: You are a shame
Jaune: Have you ever looked in the mirror?
Yang: It is clear! I am wonderful, there is no one like me
Jaune started laughing.
Yang: I told the funny guy
Jaune: Yes, in that one I saw the most beautiful women there are
Yang: I doubt
Jaune pulled his scroll out of his pocket.
Jaune: So see
Tumblr media
Team RWBY was impressed.
Blake looked at Yang.
Yang looked at Blake.
The two of them were nothing compared to this woman.
Jaune put his scroll in his pocket.
Jaune: Let's go before we get caught in a sandstorm
Ruby and Yang were crying in their uncle's arms.
Weiss was reunited with her family.
Jaune...
Ren:...
Nora:...
Ren:...
Nora:...
Ren:...
Nora:...
Ren:...
Nora:...
Jaune: You're not going to say anything?
Nora: What do you want us to say!?
Ren: Nora is right, we…… We don't expect you like this
Jaune: Like this?
Nora: You look taller!
Jaune: I'm still 180
Nora: You've become a wall of muscles!
Jaune: I'm not even that muscular
Nora: That beard and that ponytail and... That's Pyrrha's
Nora pointed to the piece of cloth in his hair.
Jaune: * Sigh * Yes, that's what was left of her, I couldn't save the rest. I went through hell on earth
Nora and Ren looked at their former leader and saw a man breaking.
Nora: Jaune, can I take a picture of you?
Jaune: Can
When Jaune crossed his arms, Nora ran very quickly and lifted his shirt.
Jaune had a well-defined six-pack and a few scars, but there was one that stood out.
Four horizontal claw marks on the abdomen.
Nora took the photo very quickly before Jaune could do anything.
Jaune looked at Ren.
Ren raised his shoulders and then lowered them because he didn't understand anything.
Jaune: Nora who did you send this photo to?
With a smile on her face, Nora showed her scroll.
His eyes widened a little.

Team RWBY's reaction to seeing Jaune surviving certain death.
Jaune: Hey everyone I'm back.
Yang: Shit Vomit Boy don't surprise me like that! Do you have any idea how worried I am?
Weiss: Hmmph! Typical. You think can just come back here like nothing ever happened... (Thank Oum you came back alive.)
Ruby: Jaune!!! You're alive. I knew you would come back. *cry* Don't you ever scare me like that again! If you're gone I don't think I can go on with my life. Because Jaune, you mean so much to me...
Blake: Oh you're back? I didn't even notice you were gone. BTW I expect dinner to be ready.

RWBY: Next Steps
This is just a design collection (remember when I used to do those? 'Winter Mission', 'Summer Tour'?? Fun times~)...and it may be my last. Its only real purpose is to give me something fun to draw for the NeverFell Projects wrap-up series. The recent Adam and Cinder designs are technically part of this collection, too. ^^
These were much harder to do than those two, though...I've spent ~2 months chipping away at this set, trying and retrying to address several different RWBY design criticisms while still making the girls look good. ಥ_ಥ I've finally begun approaching success, though, so I wanted to talk a bit about these ideas.
Ruby The only one I managed to design in one try. ^^; This was my answer to the question I felt was posed by Ruby's Vol. 7 design: i.e. "how do we do a new Ruby design that feels more 'mature'??" Because I never liked how the V7 design attempted to do that. :/
Between the new hairstyle and the new 'generic adventurer' clothes, it felt less like they were trying to evolve Ruby Rose and more like they didn't like her original design and wanted to get as far away from it as possible. V1-Ruby was such an iconic look (and STILL IS), and yet there's no trace of it in V7-Ruby. None of the goth-lolita style or playful edge that even V4-Ruby managed to preserve...instead they just scrubbed everything out to start from scratch, with a new design that's honestly 'meh' at best.
So what I did was stick closely to V1-Ruby, while adding just a few big changes to make the look distinct. You say a 'combat skirt' is too childish for an older Ruby? Well then we'll make it shorts...but shorts that are just as frilly and cute as the original skirt, with a similar overall shape. You say her original hairstyle is too boring and 'safe'? Well, then we'll change it...by simply shaving half of it off. It's a much edgier look that simultaneously preserves the original shape of her hair: from every angle except front and back, her silhouette will remain the same.
You say you want to give her new shoes, but don't want the fandom to make fun of you for covering them in dozens of belts again? Here's a wild idea: cowboy boots. ^^ A totally unexpected, unique item that still fits in with the antique-ish vibe of her goth clothes.
Basically, I just wanted to prove that you can do something dramatically different with Ruby without completely abandoning her fashion sense.
Criticisms: The details are still lacking; I think I should work some red accents into her corset and boots. Also, I originally designed this outfit with a white shirt, and I kinda want it back (she had the team colors! R, W, B, and Y! ;_;)...the problem is that it clashes with the sheer thigh-highs. One must go...I'm sure I'll figure it out
Weiss The toughest of the bunch: I did three different Weiss designs before landing on this one. ^^;;; The big epiphany came when I realized that Weiss looks her best when she mirrors Ruby. The girls' original design concepts share a lot of features; I feel like the characters were designed to look like they belong together, and figured I might as well honor that.
ALSO-- and this was the biggest priority for Weiss' design-- I firmly believe that she should not look like a princess anymore. From a character designers' perspective, it is ludicrous that they gave her the giant Disney ballgown in the same volume where they put classism at the center of the plot and have her send her bourgeoisie father to jail. That right there is the definition of mixed messages...
I thought the whole point of Weiss' character arc was to distance herself from the uber-rich parasites of her family and fellow 'Atlas elites'. I thought we cemented that when she officially lost her "heiress" title in V4. o_O I expected her next look to ditch the crown and visually show that she's past the point of 'rebelling'-- there's no more authority in her life for her to rebel against; she's free now! But alas...
So as usual, I had to do it myself. This Weiss outfit is definitely still fancy, with the coattailed vest and ruffled sleeves, but there's a lot less 'decoration'; fewer jewels, fewer details. The construction is straightforward and simple. And of course, no more tiara. Instead I decided to give her a li'l snow pea flower and ribbon, which ended up inspiring her new periwinkle purple-y color scheme. Like her original design, it's actually fairly colorful, but does its job and puts the emphasis on the white elements.
Criticisms: ...Not many, this came out pretty good. ^^ I might reconsider the black coattails, but if I do I'll probably just switch it out with the indigo inner vest. I like the idea of her outfit construction mirroring Ruby's, but her color scheme mirroring Blake's, since they have a closer bond in NeverFell.
Blake Blake designs are notoriously difficult; if you wanna hear some great reasons why, I suggest you check out this old Twiins iink RWBY design ranking video, which always helps guide me when I do redesigns for the main 4. Anyway, this phenomenon makes it hard to describe what I did...I guess you could say I tried to combine all the best elements of all her outfits, while clinging to the 'fancy action girl' vibe of her original design.
I'm most proud of her new hairstyle-- I dunno why, I just enjoyed working on it and making those decisions. ^^ It's hard to tell, but it IS shorter; now shoulder-length instead of back-length. We make up for this with additional volume, emphasizing the waves in her hair texture by pushing them outward. And most notably: she keeps the ribbon. She just wears it differently, using it to accentuate her ears instead of hiding them. This way, we keep the point of interest on her head while still showing her character growth.
Criticisms: Infinite, countless. This is a good look, but something is definitely still off. ^^;;; I think some additional detail in certain places (not sure where yet...) might help 'finish' it, so to speak. Maybe some extra yellow accents...? Also, the bow obviously gets lost in her hair this way. I've tried several color changes and don't like any of them; I think I may just have to texture it differently in the final product. Fingers crossed...
Yang Another tough one...I only made 2 design drawings, but the colors took several rounds of trial and error. I think my excitement over finally arriving at a good color scheme TODAY was what spurred me to make this post. ^^;
Anyway...there is a specific piece of Yang design criticism I hear fairly often that drives me up the wall: people commonly complain that she doesn't wear enough yellow; that she doesn't represent her character color well because all she wears is a yellow shirt. And the character designer in me wants to rip my teeth out whenever I hear this, because it blindly ignores the giant fairy-tale-inspired mass of yellow that is her hair, and the purposely attention-grabbing pops of yellow that make up Ember Celica. They're not "clothes", technically, but they're still part of the design! It's like saying a character with green skin can't represent the color green if all their clothes are black...without realizing that maybe their clothes are black BECAUSE they have green skin, in order to draw your attention to it...!! (╬▔皿▔)╯I just jifjkdsnfksahujknsjnfufh
...Anyway, anyway...the point is, it's difficult to take a character design with so much natural yellow in it and add yellow clothes and still have it read well. But because I like a challenge, I decided to take it on. I think the difference between the mustard leather and neon yellow hair is large enough to make it work, while still feeling casual enough for everyday wear. The champagne off-white she wears in her 'Hunter' outfit (which heavily inspired this) looks great, but it feels too 'classy' to me; like something specifically meant to dazzle the audience with her beauty for one special adventure, not for her to wear often.
On that note, my secondary mission with this design was just to make Yang look cute again, by following the structure of her V1 look, and even adding a little skirt on top of her battle shorts, which looks surprisingly natural considering she almost never wears one.
I don't know what happened in the canon to make the character designer forget the 'Yellow Beauty' part of her character concept; tbh even if her gender presentation gets more masculine she can still look pretty. Designs like Ozma, V7 Qrow and V4 Ren show that they understand this, but choose to cover Yang up in flavorless sheets of beige anyway. :T Making sure she always has a boob window isn't enough; the clothes themselves need to say something too.
Criticisms: ...Honestly, none? I think this might be solid. :> We'll see what happens when I draw it properly. I hope the white socks work out, because then she'll successfully be wearing the RWBY color scheme, which fits her (former, implied...) role as the glue holding the team together.

Happy Birthday Jaune Arc
Jaune would be in his dorm listening to music while reading but until his door was kicked in and he would look to see it was all his friends holding a bunch of gifts. He would be confused but happy at the same time
RWBY(J)NOREW: Happy Birthday Jaune Arc!!
Jaune: Oh thanks guys but you didn't need to buy gif-
When he was about to finish his sentence, Nora would approach and place her fingers on Jaune's lips, shutting him up while everyone entered his room, arranging the gifts.
Nora: Look after you told us that I've been stuck on an island for like 40 or 30 years we want to do something good, So sit there and enjoy the gifts!
Jaune just sighed happily and got ready and the first gift he opened would be Ruby's. It would be a personalized knife in the colors of Jaune's armor and weapon.
Jaune: Wow thanks ruby I loved this knife it seems very useful when the situation gets tough if I don't have my sword or shield.
Ruby:No problem jaune but don't forget that it can also be turned into a gun! Jaune heard that and would make a movement with the knife that would transform it into a pistol. Yang and Blake would approach Jaune and give him a gift that had bee colors. He opened it and received a collection of books and a personalized helmet.
Blake: Well I found my old collection of ninjas of love and I thought you would like the books, I recommend reading them when you are alone.
Yang: And I made this helmet for you so that when you go for a ride on your motorcycle or something, you'll have more security, but I can't promise that it will help you stop vomiting hah.
Jaune and the others laughed at what Yang had said and he left the books and helmet next to the knife, Next was Weiss who was holding a small box with her and his color combination, He opened it and found cupcakes with his emblem and Weiss's.
Weiss: K-klein told me that a good b-birthday gift is something you made yourself, so I hope y-you like it!
Nora: Got it, you made cupcakes! That's why they have your emblem alongside his!
The people would look at Weiss who was blushing but then they would look at Jaune who was also slightly blushing so he put the cupcakes together with the presents. Winter would come close to Jaune and give him an envelope and he would open it and see a large amount of money.
Winter: You deserve this amount of money for helping to save a kingdom and for protecting my little sister until the end, Thank you very much jaune.
Emerald would approach Jaune and she would give him a rabbit keychain. He would look at it and have a happy expression on his face.
Emerald: I know it's kind of simple but I was told that you liked rabbits and well I can get you this keychain and I hope you like it.
Nora and Ren, along with Oscar, would approach with a small box that was the combination of the jnpr team's colors. Jaune opened it and saw that inside was a juniper statue with pyrrha riding on it. He would be slightly shocked but happy.
Ren: We heard how you commented on how important Juniper was to you that we made this little sculpture. And if she were here right now we'd thank her for keeping you safe.
Jaune would start crying and everyone would be worried until they noticed him laughing and looking at them with a big smile on his face.
Jaune: You are the best friends anyone could have. Thank you very much for the gifts guys
Jaune would leave the sculpture on top of the closet near his weapon and shield and hug his friends who would hug him back and they would leave the room. Jaune was going out with them until Weiss approached him and kissed him on the cheek and then wished him a happy birthday.

This is a friendly reminder that RWBY Beyond is extended universe and not part of the main series and so the writers' choice to put important things - like Yang and Ruby addressing what happened in V9 - is quite a bold move. Like, I'm still expecting everything that happened in V9 to NOT get glossed over in V10, because I don't want to have to do homework and get subscriptions and watch YouTube videos in order for the main show to be even sort of close to good.
And before anyone comes in talking about 'they have no time anymore' and 'they need to use V10 to tie off all these important threads' etcetera, they made their own bed. Like maybe RWBY Beyond wouldn’t have to include conversations that should be in the main show if the writers hadn't wasted their time on things like Jaune angst 2.0 or Little/Somewhat or getting their stuff back from a raccoon or unnecessary exposition on where the gods came from. The writers have NEVER been good at managing their time, and it results in things like them trying to do damage control in the silly extended content shorts because they forgot to write Yang to be a caring sister in the main show.
And then fans turn around and are like 'I can't believe that people are complaining that Yang comes across as a bad sister in the main show, didn't they see how she cringed when Ruby was in danger in the second Batman crossover side movie? Didn't they see the follow-up short to Sun and Neptune's mustache adventures?"
Say it with me; the main show ought to be able to stand on its own as a good piece of media without expecting fans to do homework.

RWBY V9 Epilogue Response
I LEGIT STARTED CRYING!!!!
Seriously this was freaking amazing, I need RWBY to continue, to be finished by these amazing people!
(Swallows back tears)
OK, OK, OK, but like, this was such a brilliant way to show the passage of time, less one sequential event after another and more via a collection of different character perspectives that let us see how things have been going, each one colored by the various characters unique perspectives.
The contrast of Winter's despair and Qrow's optimism, of Nora taking the world on her shoulders & Ren trying to ease his loved one's burdens. Oscar & Ozpin actually being on the same page and fighting the merge. It's all so good and I love all the shots with secondary characters in each scene helping give us a stronger idea how they and by extension everyone else is coping or not coping with things. Seriously, just brilliant storytelling!
Also the fact the massive air fleet & Amity arrived at the same time as RWBY & Jaune, that fits the turning of the tides theme of V9's ending so perfectly and I can see why the Blacksmith sent the team back 'then' given that means a bunch of good things are going to happen at once and do a lot to restore hope.
I also love the general world building, discussing Vacuo's history of colonization, how settlements are being upkept, and gods the loss of Vale, S-assy girl on tumblr predicted it years ago but I still didn't see it coming to this extent. Low key glad Tai's not there cos I'm me and very intrigued about what Glynda is up to. Plys Tyrian, my favorite bastard man, he's here and the Crown is evidently not done with yet either!
Also is Ruby gonna have a cult? I think she should have a cult. It wouldn't help but it'd be interesting, also nice seeing the Happy Huntresses, love them. Plus Raven bringing the team in, ooh I just LOVE THIS!
Gods this is all so good and I need so much more, I have not felt this energized in a long time, thanks so much for sharing this with us, I love the directions everyone is taking!

When do you think we'll get news on volume 9 and how long do you think the volume will be I remember someone telling me that volume 9 was going to be 10 episodes but I think that's just the rumor
I'm a month late on this ask, sorry! I would've said we'd get it at RTX, since that's a big event and people would be compelled to buy tickets and attend so as to be among the first to know. But here we are a month later and yup! They're gonna reveal it at RTX, surprise, surprise XD
As for the length, I've heard from several people (and one of the writers iirc?) that it'll be a short volume with fewer episodes, but I don't remember the actual number.
