i mean this in the least weird possible i promise but. i think that you get an extra layer of delight in reading tged and 약 파는 황태자 if you're used to consuming korean content. i'm not saying you're missing something important from them if you don't do this but,,,, i do think there are certain little details and humor that probably don't hit quite as much if you're not familiar with some of the culture and humor lol

it's just the little things, like lloyd calling javier "this punk" or "this guy" even while talking directly with him, because it feels sorta awkward in english, but if you're used to watching series or movies in korean you can almost hear the tone in which he's saying it.

or when javier is teasing lloyd and he hits too close at home and lloyd just goes "hey" but you can almost heart the "야" which is very close but not quite. or this little 'haah' he does when he's kind of frustrated or thinking hard about something.

or that you don't quite get why it's such a deal that julian started calling lloyd 'older brother' cause the translation doesn't use the word 'hyung'. or that the point of javier and lloyd's bet was that if lloyd lost he would call javier, someone younger than him, 'hyung' which would imply he's older and is a form of showing respect or affection. which is completely different from the 'master' they used in the translation. or how sweet and kind of sad it is that theodore still calls rakiel 'hyung' even when the whole court expects them to be against each other.

or just in general the way the dialogue flows feels much more natural when you consider that it was originally written in korean and not in english

it just,, small things that you don't quite notice unless you already have experience in dealing with a different language than the one you were raised with akjshdkja

#i talk a lot <3 #i think people who are bilingual will get what i'm saying #it's not the same to read a translation when you don't know the original language as it is when you do know it #even if you don't quite speak it #there's just a certain tone to all languages #and you enjoy media a lot more when you consume it in it's original language #or are at the very least familiar with it #my native language is spanish and when i learned english i had to learn the way humor and tone and slang is used with it #because it's so much different than the humor and tone and slang we use in spanish and if you don't learn those things you're missing a big #chunk of the language itself #now my korean is basically non-existent i can tell you a few words and phrases and can maybe get the gist of a couple sentences #i would not be able to read an entire book in korean #but i'm familiar with the sounds and intonation of it so it's fun to see the way a sentence is written in korean #and being able to kinda tell how it would sound out loud #or i dunno maybe i'm just a nerd ajskdhjka

the thing about idlewild. is that there is a LOT of really interesting stuff to discuss about to discuss in regards to this book (codependency, theater, queer loneliness, unrealized trans identity, racism, fetishization and idealization and exploration) but also my most visceral memory of reading this book is probably going to be when i realized that that excerpts of the rpf the two protagonists wrote was going to be actually INCLUDED in the book and had to physically put my copy down and walk around the house with my head in my hands out of sheer secondhand embarrassment. utterly masterful moment of cringe.

Ok important question, how/do the aliens kiss? Like does the species kiss or have something with the same meaning?

they don't kiss in the way we would think about it, since they don't have mobile lips and have much larger mouths, but they do a lot of like. head nudges, nose touching, rubbing their faces together, that kind of thing. individuals with a lot of experience with humans - particular how humans expression affection/desire - will pick up more habits akin to kissing, depending on their partner - gentle bites, licking, etc.

they also have very long tongues, so do with that information what you will.

#i think culturally they do a lot of like. grooming #and scale care and things for their families and partners #and their ideas about what consistutes an 'intimate' touch (non-sexual) are slightly different #when they're with their friends and family they tend to be very physically touchy #also bc there's levels of communication that come from like. pheromons and sub-vocal frequency sounds and stuff so they like to be close #so they can hear each other #like being able to see your partner's face and knowing what they're thinking #they don't do very many facial expressions so they aren't very good at reading human faces but they ARE good at body language #and a big part of that is touch #so touch averse operatives are going to have some interesting conversations if they're romancing rhaxa #rhaxa has Read Books he knows humans don't like to be grabbed and have their faces touched he is being very good about that rn #but. yeah #sorry u said the magic phrase (asked me about the bugs) so u get an essay #anon #bug lore

I am reworking their backstory slightly (by that I mean I did and I’m too lazy to write it in my card as I need drawing assets) — but part of that is also at least *knowing* what Bya’s parents would look and act like.

I think I drafted a design for his mother before but I kind want to redo her as I’ve changed the role she plays in his life (instead as of being an active part, I’ve decided to kill her off when he was young, which fits much better into canon and what he says regarding his family).

I know that Byakuya literally HAS to inherit his eyes and hair colour from his mother, just by genetic predisposition — which I think is technically possible, albeit unlikely, through genetic recombination (another fandom interpretation was some kind of albinism, and although it’s a smooth explanation I don’t think it’s intended — especially as he’s intended as a dirty-blonde, not platinum). I like to think he has his father’s jaw, nose, and general body type though.

#I don’t think his father would be happy about him resembling his mother a little either #(which I have ideas for) #the big headcanon of the fandom was he is half French — which explains how invested he is canonically in the cuisine and language #I mean — it’s alluded to in the art book too with the phrase ‘he doesn’t exactly look Japanese’ which is always a weird line . #though he’s platinum blonde in the anime but dirty-blonde in the games?? I admit I’ve drawn him both ways. #but I’m leaning towards a bit of a darker colour recently because I can balance out a better skin tone in shading

talked to one of my colleagues and he said he's lived in 20 different countries and spent most of his life in the uae although he's originally from an english-speaking country. so i asked him if he spoke any other languages. and he seriously fucking said "no, everyone just speaks english anyway" :|

hii, i don't really do beta reading/editing, sorry!! i can suggest some helpful tools, though, such as grammarly or instatext -- i've used both myself, and they're great! instatext requires a subscription, but you get a free trial period and can edit small portions of text for free every day

and if you think you'd prefer a person to read through it for you, you can always make a public post on tumblr, and ask if anyone would be interested!!!

Girl help I'm getting ambitious ideas for my book series that'll make book one probably take like twice as long to be ready to publish :(

#it's a high fantasy story #and of course with that comes the chance of using other languages #now i'm me and love languages irl so i figured i'd just take preexisting languages and use them #but then. Then. #i got the idea to take those languages and through research and a lot of bullshitting #change some of the words #so that those who know the language can tell what it's based on and how to pronounce it #but can also tell it's been stretched for good ol' fantasy originality #bc i realized i could do some cool stuff with some of the different cultures and religions in this story #after all a lot of words and phrases in various languages stem from religions and cultural values. #but also girl help this idea is cool enough im almost totally gonna do it and i can take as long as i want thank you #but i do really want to begin to share this story already its been in the works for 3 years :( #im probably gonna end up continuing to work on book 1s first draft and just leave spaces for bits in other languages to fill in later #that sounds like the fastest route

randomly hit with just how. strange. it really is that general discussion of fictional characters treats them as like... people, who's actions have consequences in the real world or who's writers put them through real situations

#i watched a video once from a very young creator (bless her) #and i could tell from the way she talked about her characters that this shift has happened. and im not sure why? #she described giving one character a dark backstory as 'giving them trauma' #specifically the word trauma. and i could infer from her phrasing and parlance that this type of language is likely common #and i saw someone send an ask to a blog about a comic book character today... asking the user if they felt the writers of said book #were putting the character through too many traumatic situations #without any real concern for like.... how that contributes to the story. bc at the end of the day characters are vehicle for plot #even in a 'character driven' story. hell ESPECIALLY so #the reverse of this of course is people who like... categorically hate villains or cannot conceive of a protagonist doing bad things #it's just strange. and i have to wonder when how and why this happened #im not saying someone should have to have a degree in literature to provide analysis or write stories heaven forbid #but understanding that characters are tools in a story is like. basic stuff.
