Bridgerton Spouses Ranked on How Prepared they Were to Join the Bridgerton Family Chaos:
1. Penelope - This girl chronicled the life of this family for a decade. She half lived in their house. She canonically spent actual brain power wondering what it would be like to be part of this family. Nothing any of these assholes can ever pull will surprised her. 10/10 on preparedness right here.
2. Kate - The Pall Mall scene is all the proof you need. She will keep up with anything they throw at her. She saw them all at their most bloodthirsty and still committed. She didn’t know them longest, but she did a lot with the time she had to get ready. 9/10
3. Simon - Known Anthony for 10 years before joining the fray. He knew how many siblings there were, many of their names, and also met Benedict pre-narrative. He didn’t know exactly how much they could be in advance, but once he knew what was what he got the lay of the land real quick and was down to kill it.
4. Michael - Had at least 4 years of full Bridgerton exposure before committing. He had time to know what he was getting in to. He’s a charming SOB and they will all feel it. He and Frannie can always bail to Scotland when overwhelmed, and when they’re with the clan he’s more than capable of navigating the chaos.
5. Gareth - Knew of the family at the very least. It takes him a bit to adjust to just how many people there are and how closely knit everyone is, and he takes time to wrap his head around how much they all like each other, but he at least knew them by Whistledown/reputation before he showed up so not utterly unprepared.
6. Lucy - Again, knows them all by reputation. Is not prepared, but does jump right in on the chaos. The woman has 9 children and names most of them after Bridgertons, that willingness to take on mayhem suggests at least 9/10 adaptability if only about a 4-5/10 for preparedness
7. Sophie - Only knew anything about the family from Whistledown and exactly 8 days of exposure before she and Benedict did a backflip in to married life in the country. Was not prepared. Was thrilled to be there.
8. Philip - Knew nothing. Like seriously and absolutely nothing. He had to think hard about if he knew how many brothers Eloise had and only knew from her letters. The clan descends and his introvert self has no internal monologue apart from Kill Bill sirens. -100000/10 preparedness. Honestly shocked he survived.

Philoise shippers All that talk about Julie Andrews has me thinking that if LW is still around by the time it's Phillip and Eloise season, I'd love for one of the songs of Romney Hall to be the string quartet cover of "my favorite things" and for Julie Andrews to make a little cameo as Phillip's maiden aunt in the philoise wedding.
I can have my dreams okay!!

Sharing again some headcanons during the Bridgerton Triple Wedding Bonanza of 1824. I posted part 1 about Colin and Penelope here.
Part 2: Eloise and Philip
Anthony and Violet were quite delighted to watch Colin whisk Penelope away after their surprise revelation of Lady Whistledown. The ball continued on merrily to the wee hours of dawn, and everyone enjoyed the festivities to their heart's content, most especially the Bridgertons.
Little did they know how Eloise could turn their worlds upside down the next day.
Violet woke up late (and slightly hungover) from the previous night's festivities. She went about her usual routine before checking in on her children.
Violet goes into Eloise's room, which was strangely untouched. She did not think much of it at first until the maid informs her of Eloise's absence. Alarm bells rang in Violet's head.
Violet and the staff frantically search for Eloise, to no avail. She ran to the bank with her solicitor, trying to prepare for the worst-case scenario. Violet only lost her composure when Anthony rushed to her side at the bank.
Anthony brought her back to Number Five, where she breaks down in front of her children.
"I cannot lose her Anthony," Violet said in between sobs.
Kate and Hyacinth comfort the matriarch while Anthony looked on with troubled features. Determination floods his features as he spoke.
"I will find her, Mother. I promise."
Anthony went on a mission possessed. He enlisted Gregory's help to search for their sister. It was not until the entire day passed that Gregory raised a pertinent question.
"I know we do not want to disturb the newlyweds, but don't you think we should involve Colin and Penelope in this?"
Colin and Penelope join them the next day. The Bridgerton siblings helped Penelope as she scoured through Eloise's personal effects for any morsel of information. It wasn't until they moved furnitures that Penelope noticed a letter wedged behind a desk.
The Bridgerton men surround Penelope as she frantically scanned the letter.
"Oh, Eloise..." Penelope whispered as her eyes scanned the letter, picking up the pressed flower inside it and holding it for everyone to see.
"This is a letter from a Mr. Philip Crane, from Gloucestershire."
The implications sank into everyone's heads. Gregory swore to himself. Colin said nothing and sighed in disappointment, though anger emanated in his green eyes.
Anthony took the note from Penelope's hands. Fury rolled off him in waves as he memorized the address of this Crane fellow.
"Send a missive for Benedict. Brothers, we ride for Romney Hall."
--
Anthony walked Eloise back to the dining room in Romney Hall. All of the four Bridgerton brothers were worried and furious about their sister recklessly going to this place alone. Anthony would never admit it out loud, but he knew Sir Philip Crane and Eloise would make a perfect match. He saw how Sir Crane and Eloise defended each other earlier (even after the fact that he and his brothers almost killed the man).
Anthony knows love can blossom between the two. It happened to him and his other siblings, it could happen to Eloise too. He can only hope Eloise would be receptive to love once it comes.
--
Violet lets out a sigh of relief as the priest declared Sir Philip and Eloise husband and wife. She wished the circumstances were better, but overall Violet was happy to see her daughter marry someone who seemed to match her.
Violet had been hesitant at first, after hearing the entire truth from her sons. She did not want to marry Eloise off to some unknown gentleman. Anthony assuaged her fears though, telling her there was nothing to fret about.
"I have high hopes for them, Mother. You will see it once you see them together."
True enough, Anthony was right. Violet observed the couple during the ceremony, and during the reception on the lawns of Romney Hall. Something brewed between Sir Philip and Eloise as they interact with each other. Violet saw the potential Anthony talked about, but she still could not help but worry. Eloise, out of all her children, is the most headstrong, even compared to Anthony. Her daughter charges head-on, expecting everything to fall into place as she sees fit and just.
Violet could only hope that Eloise does not charge into her marriage with that fervor, so she advised her daughter to take their time.
It took some time, but Anthony and Violet saw how Eloise's marriage to Sir Philip bloomed into the love match it was meant to be, and both of them couldn't be happier.
Now only if the remaining single Bridgertons do not go into scandalous matches... Life would be great.
--
Bonus: A headcanon of the Bridgerton Brothers at My Cottage, after fetching Eloise from Romney Hall
In Benedict's study...
Benedict: So, what do you think of Sir Philip Crane?
Gregory: Meh, the chap's all right. Wish I'd hit him once more though, just to warn him not to mess up anymore with Eloise.
Colin (munching on something God knows what): Sod off, Gregory, do not traumatize the man lest he runs away from his upcoming nuptials with our sister.
Benedict: I think he seems like a studious type of fellow. Eloise would like that.
Colin: He displayed immediate loyalty to Eloise, despite the circumstances. He got my vote there.
Anthony: I agree. Sir Crane will be a fine match for Eloise. We'll make sure of that. *cracks his knuckles*
Gregory: *grins*

only 72 days to my favourite characters and ships are back I do hope we get to see more Marina and Philip in dislike/enemies to lovers kinda story my fav trope I mean if we can get that in queen Charlotte, with Charlotteand George where it was a marriage of convenience force and without love at first but they grew to learn about each other their situation form a bond only they can and love each other would be so epic + it’ll give plot twist instead of the predictable ending we are headed.
Tumblr media
we saw the queen stand by the king with his illness love him still does to modern day Bridgerton, it’s beautiful would love to see a man standing by his wife and hee illness it would be so very much different unexpected by man especially during that time and not having him abandoned her emotionally mentally checked out on her and her/their kids now when she needs someone/him the most why is it only woman characters that stay and try to be understanding unconditionally loving protective and helping of their partner’s illness especially during that society time.
give us something new please something unexpected different in the show a change the whole show talks about putting a modern spin on that world all the time, what better way would then seeing a man be in the role of carer of his wife like qc takes care of her husband!
We know they won’t change the end couples which is fine don’t mean that sir Philip can’t come to understand and love marina and Marina him and once she is no longer with him he can ofc fall in love again you don’t just fall in love just once in your life there’s first love and then there’s true soulmate love!
Still waiting on that princess Edwina a Brid story for s2 of the spin off after polin season and before Benedict season followed by lady Danbury a Bridgerton story then s5 of Bridgerton, then lastly prince Adolphus a Bridgeton story and the last ever season of Bridgerton having all the remaining 2 siblings stories go together s6 the end! this way everyone gets their happy endings and also first love and true love aka their soulmate love

i gave her book 1 star because of the abuse stuff and it completely lacked plot. but i genuinely would love to hear other perspectives on it. i feel like im missing something.

I saw a comment either on tik tok or Instagram that said Eloise could go to Marina in Season 3 to tell her that Penelope is Lady Whistledown and then this would lead to her meeting Philip for the first time. If this does happen ( which I am not sure will happen since Ruby is currently working on her mental health. I don't know if she will be making an appearance) there are a couple of things I want to happen.
If Eloise tells Marina that Pen is Whistledown, I want Marina's reaction to be like "okay...and?" Or like "Yeah, I already figured". Marina has had some time for reflection and because she always came of like such a pragmatic person and someone who tried to be logical, she would have figured out that there were a handful of people that knew what she was trying to do and Penelope was one of them and continuously tried to talk her out of it. So she figured if Penelope wasn't Whistledown herself, then she told Whistledown.
Then I want Marina to tell Eloise to move on. Eloise motivation to tell Marina would stem from wanting someone to validate her anger or something along those lines. And for Marina, who has always held anger and resentment due to her situation, to tell Eloise that she has moved on, she's not mad at Penelope, that she doesn't care about Whistledown or the ton, I think can help Eloise move on. I think it would also be helpful for Marina to tell her to get over her pride and be like "Eloise what are you actually upset about? What were you hoping for me to say or what were you thinking by coming here? Me and your brother weren't a real thing so none of it really matters"
Then I want Sir Philip to come in as Eloise is leaving and it is very obvious that they find each other attractive. Philip's eyes are glued to Eloise and they engage in some small talk. Marina gives some side eye because she has never seen Philip like that.
After Eloise is gone, Marina and Philip have some kind of heart to heart where she tells him it's okay to look at other women because she knows she's not giving anything in their marriage and Philip is way to gentlemanly to even consider it.
Overall, I think it's an interesting idea that can lead to a lot. It can lead to Eloise and Penelope reconciling. The beginnings of Philip and Eloise and some insight into what might happen with Marina. I've been thinking instead of having her die, maybe she will fall in love with someone else and ask Philip for a divorce. She will either take the twins or they decide Philip will be able to provide for them better. But that way Marina will have somewhat of a happy ending or find some sort of peace that will leave things open for Philip and Eloise.

Among more things Eloise did not think she would do, was do picnics in the park. But she and were sitting on a large blanket. Neddy and the twins were running around.
"How's Marina?" Kate asked.
"Stressing over Fashion Week." Eloise sighed, thinking of her hardworking, "I managed to spoon solid food and not coffee into her mouth yesterday as she made a phonecall about tulle."
"Edwina and Daphne are the same," Kate laughed, "Simon and Matthew are getting worried. Well, Simon is more used to it. If I ever doubted Matthew's devotion, I may have to eat my words - he goes with her to fittings and everything!"
Eloise had noticed the man watching her and the children for a while. Some tall white guy dressed like a lawyer. Lawyers could be creeps.
"Hey, Kate, can you watch the twins?" She asked her sister-in-law, cutting off the conversation.
"Yeah, of course." She said, confused as Eloise stormed up to a man she did not recognise.
He did not seem to realise Eloise was approaching him and his eyes widened in surprise.
"May I help you? Or do I need to call the police?" Eloise asked him sharply.
"I just wanted to see them." He told her apologetically.
"Excuse me?!"
"Okay, wait, that came out really wrong!" He said holding up his hands, "My name is Phillip Crane and I believe I am the uncle to those children."
---
"Philip Crane?"
Marina stopped twisting her hair when Eloise told her about what had happened.
"He's George's younger brother. Gosh, I haven't seen him in years!" She continued, then turned around, "I didn't even think he was in the country."
Eloise who was sitting on their bed, in pyjamas sighed, "He didn't know?"
"None of them knew."
Marina sat down on the bed next to her, sighing, "I wasn't allowed to go to George's funeral. I decided I really did not want the children around them."
The Cranes were an old family, with a long history in the British military at all ranks and were very strict about who they associated with. Marina Thompson, a half French, black, bisexual stylist was far from the ideal but George fell in love with her. She loved him too, a gentle giant and Navy man. Then he had to go away and his submarine sunk off the coast of Somalia. And his family told her not to come to the funeral. She and George were not married, after all.
"What if he tries to take the twins?" Marina asked quietly, "He could use our sexualities, my depression." But Eloise was having none of it, clutching her hand tightly and looking at her
"You were depressed because the guy you loved died and his family treated you like dirt. And if he wants to take our children, he will have to go through me." She said determinedly, "You are a brilliant mum and he has no claim. He's an uncle who is turned up out of nowhere!"
---
The Bridgertons heard, because Kate told Anthony what happened and no one in that family could keep anything to themselves.
"Do you want us to pay this Phillip Crane a visit?" Anthony asked over Sunday Dinner, "Ben, Colin, Greg?"
"You three are the least intimidating idiots I know." Marina deadpanned. Then she smiled at Gregory, "But thank you." He was her favourite of the bunch, aside from Eloise of course.
--
Philipe came to their home on Saturday.
"You cut your hair." Marina said. He looked so much older than when she last saw him.
"You stopped straightening yours." He said with a small chuckle.
They fell into an awkward silence, so Eloise stepped forward, "Nice to see you again. Glad you are not a child predator."
He looked embarrassed, "I'm so sorry about that. I just had been walking past and saw..."
"It's fine." Eloise said with a small smile.
"How long have the two of you been together?" He asked.
"A year and a half." Marina said, a smile to her, "We're getting married in July. It would be sooner, but this one has a book tour and I have pieces to finish - fashion week, the Met Gala."
"Again, this is why we should elope rather than let Daphne plan." Eloise said, fondly rolling her eyes, "I'll marry you anywhere."
Philip smiled at the two of them, "Congratulations."
"I'll leave you two to talk." Eloise said, "I think an impromptu game of hide and seek has begun!" With that, she made her way upstairs, where she knew the twins were hiding.
Marina and Philip sat down in the living room, tea prepared on a tray, "My parents always said tough conversations needed tea. Actually, my father prefers whiskey as part of the drink."
"How are your parents?" Phillip asked
"Good. They retired to the south of France last year. Got another farm, because Dad can't just retire." Marina said and he smiled, "How have you been?"
"Good. Good. I came home for the funeral, left soon after. I'm sorry for not calling."
"You were grieving." She pointed out.
"So were you." Phillip said, shaking his head, "I just got back from Cape Town." He explained, "And a friend of mine told me that you had children. Toddlers."
"And you did the math." Marina finished and he nodded.
"I can't believe you were pregnant." He said, "Did George know?"
"No." Marina shook her head, "No, he never got my email and well, your family were not exactly the most welcoming bunch."
"I'm sorry about that. Truly." Philip said. He had liked Marina. She made George happy. He was free from the pressure from their father when he was around her.
"I did love George. I hope you know that."
"I do." Phillip said, "I was sad that we didn't get to know each other better. But I want to now, especially with the children."
"The twins do know. Who their dad is." Marina informed.
"Oh, they do?" He blinked, surprised.
"I would never want to hide that away from them. They just know that their father was in the army and he passed away." She explained and he nodded, "I do not need to get into family politics of your racist father."
He grimaced at her frank tone, but could not disagree, "Well, I do wish to help. I'm based in Kent, but am in London rather often. Anything you need-"
"Oh, Phillip, you owe me nothing." Marina said gently.
"You're family, it's not about debt. I don't want to disrupt your life or relationship. But I do want to know my niece and nephew, that is all." He said with a shy smile.
She brought him to the playroom, where Eloise was lying down on the plush carpet, passing blocks to Oliver and Amanda.
"Mummy, look!" Oliver said excitedly but frowned at the stranger.
"I see, my love." Marina smiled, "This is your uncle Philip. He was your daddy's brother."
Oliver stayed by Eloise, his stepmother sitting up to hug him reassuringly. He was nervous when it came to new people. Amanda, on the hand, stood up, looking at Phillip curiously.
"Hello." Amanda said, "You were our dad's brother?"
"He was my older brother." He explained, kneeling down to her height, "I'm guessing you are the oldest." She grinned and nodded.
Oliver looked like George. He had his mother's skin town and curly hair but George's eyes and nose, "Hello Oliver." Philip said gently.
In response, Oliver whispered something to Eloise who nodded.
"Olly wants to know if you like Legos." Eloise asked of him.
"I very much do like Legos." Philip confirmed, making Olly smile.
"Good." Amanda grabbed his hand, pulling him to the floor, "We are making a zoo. Have you been to the zoo?"
"I have been to many zoos. I once saw a lion up close!" He said and Amanda launched into questions as he helped them build their zoo.
Eloise stood, going over to Marina who was watching on with a smile, "Quite the unorthodox family, aren't we?"
"Well, there is no fun in convention." Marina whispered back.

I did a poll for Eloise's best (sapphic) ship, so now it's Marina's turn.
Like Eloise's poll, I put them in order of preference, but the only two ships I actually like are the first two.
George is basically a non-character, and Colin and Philip are boring, so...
If you like, tell me why have you chosen the ship you voted.

Philoise prompt: enemies to lovers college professor x student au
Where Eloise is forced to take environmental studies to make up some credits in the semester but professor Crane can tell she has absolutely no interest in plants and calls on her twice as much in class to make sure she's actually learning something. But Eloise just thinks he's picking on her because she's the only one in class not majoring in a science related field
Cue Miss Bridgerton and professor Crane accidentally meeting late at night in the library. Phillip softening up when he learns she decided to minor in social actvism to supplement her law degree because she really cares about how things are wrong in the world and she wants to fix it
Professor Crane in turn talks about how he's Bothanist, but likes to teach in the university because spreading awareness over the environment matters as much as developing new breeds of plants.
Cue Eloise slowly softening up to Professor Crane and Phillip going more easy on her. And them running into each other all over campus eventually becoming friends and developing feelings. But hiding it because student professor relationships are forbidden
Oh the drama! The hiding, the family meddling! And campus events for couples where Phillip is invited as a professor and can't ask Eloise to go with him as his partner.
Eloise being jealous of all the girls who flirt with Phillip to raise their grade and being insecure over the pretty woman who always visits his office and leaves with a satisfied look (only to find out Marina is Phillip's sister in law who always leaves him babysitting when she goes clubbing)
And the feelings!! The hidden moments in his office explaining a book, when he's about to kiss her but doesn't. And she feels dissapointed arghhh
I just want this okay! Someone write it plz

Bridgerton AU: Polin Harry Potter AU Part 2
So I had someone message me and ask just how and why James would ask Penelope of all people to the Yule Ball. If you want to know, click the read on button. This post is also dedicated to @optimus-pam, @aestaekoo, and @emandems10. Thanks for being some of my first supporters!
A little bit more about this verse
James Sirius Potter, Michael Sterling, Philip Crane, and Fred Weasley the II make up the second generation of Marauders
Michael is in Slytherin, Philip is in Hufflepuff, and both James and Fred are in Gryffindor
James has liked Penelope since the end of their 3rd year when he realized that she was one who caused Cressida Cowpeper’s face to resemble  an actual cow with the nose and ears to go with it. The best part was that she was unable to say anything for the whole day and was only able to let out a moo when she attempted to speak. The only reason he figured it was because he saw the expression on her face that morning, the one of someone who knows they just pulled off something amazing and didn’t get caught. Their eyes meet for a moment and she smiles at him, putting a finger over her lips and tossing him a wink before boarding the Hogwarts express and leaving him in a daze and wondering why he feels all fluttery.
Come the start of fourth year, James decides to observe Penelope a bit. He finds that she’s one of the smartest girls in their year but her quiet nature makes it easy for others to underestimate her. They’ll be in the middle of some lesson and she’ll mutter some hilarious or sarcastic comment under her breath resulting in James trying not to laugh. She’s also incredibly kind. More than once he’s seen her tutoring a first or second year student in the library. The more he notices about her, the harder he falls.
Of course this somehow leads to a misunderstanding between him and Eloise Bridgerton which then leads them to somehow becoming rivals.
It all starts in Transfiguration class one day when the class is trying to turn their goblets into songbirds James gets distracted while watching Penelope laugh about something in front him and instead of his spell hitting the goblet, it hits Penelope instead resulting in her eyebrows transforming into feathers. When she whips around to look at him what he means to say is “Oh sorry, my bad Penelope, I wasn’t paying attention. Let me fix those feathers for you.” What comes out instead is “ahh my bad feathers.” Eloise, thinking he did it on purpose since Penelope’s last name is Featherington and, glares at him before helping Penelope to fix her eyebrows.
Every time James and his friends approach them it somehow turns into a verbal sparring match between Eloise and James while Philip and Penelope look on in exasperation at their best friends. Michael and Fred on the other hand think it’s the most bloody brilliant thing in the world that James can’t say something to Penelope without Eloise thinking he’s teasing her. The rows usually end with Eloise grabbing Penelope by the hand and huffing away, while James groans on to his friends for the next thirty minutes about his shitty luck.
Of course he’d have to be blind to not notice her crush on the third eldest Bridgerton and he’ll admit he’s jealous but it also fills him with determination to outshine the Hufflepuff. Oh Colin Bridgerton gets good grades? Look who is one of the top students in their year (Aside from Eloise, Penelope, and Phillip of course)! Huh, Colin made the Hufflepuff quidditch team during his fourth year? Guess who was made chaser of the Gryffindor quidditch team their second year?(If his teammates notice how he tends to focus more during matches against Hufflepuff, they don’t say anything though Fred makes a comment here and there). Colin comes from a big family? Have you met the Weasley-Potter bunch? They practically run the school and most of them have red hair!
At some point, Ginny figures out from his letters (along with Albus and Lily’s but she’s not about to rat out her other children) that he’s developed a crush on some girl named Penelope at school.
Note: Albus thinks he likes Eloise but Lily insists that James is just to stupid to directly approach Penelope, a lovely red haired Ravenclaw girl who has helped her find what she needs in the library more than once. Ginny agrees with her daughter as when James writes he only complains about Eloise but then mentions something nice about her friend Penelope.
“ Eloise Bridgerton was a real pain this week. I swear she singled me out during our game with Ravenclaw on Saturday and kept sending the bludgers my way. The look on  her face when we won the game was worth it though. Her friend Penelope even congratulated us afterwards, despite the fact we just beat her house. I still can’t figure out how someone as lovely as Penny Penelope is friends with a harpie like Eloise Bridgerton.”
When she writes to ask him about if he really hates Eloise Bridgerton or hates how she gets in the way of him talking to her friend in a letter, James comes clean about his situation (he’s learned that there’s no lying to a Weasley woman). Ginny then gives him some advice, telling him to relax a bit more around Penelope and try getting her (and Eloise) to see him as a friend then go from there.
So he does. He asks Penelope if she can help him with his Potions homework since he knows she’s a great tutor. And it seems like this plan might actually work. Until five minutes in, Eloise plops herself at their table and spends the remaining time glaring at him while inserting a jab at him every so often. This time though he elects to ignore it, trying to be the bigger person and reminding himself that Eloise is Penelope’s best friend which means if he wants to be friends with Penelope then he’ll have to play nice.
At some point Eloise and James are able to move past nearly challenging the other to a duel at each meeting to somewhat civil conversation, enough so that Eloise mostly ignores James during his tutoring sessions with Penelope and instead works on her own homework or goes to study with her boyfriend Theo Sharpe.
Of course, these sessions have also helped him become closer to Penelope and James considers his endeavors to winning his lovely redheads heart as Penelope will now wave and smile at him in the halls or even mouth good luck to him during Quidditch. She even lets him call her Feathers or Penny. But while he has made great strides in his relationship with Penelope, to the point where he would consider them to be friends, he knows her heart is still set on Colin.
Oddly enough, James realizes that he’s well and truly in love with Penelope Featherington the day Colin and Marina get together. It was during the first game of the term with Hufflepuff vs. Slytherin. Hufflepuff ends up winning by a landslide and the quidditch pitch is flooded by the cheering crowd. James spots Penelope and is about to wave to her only to watch her smile adoringly at Colin who comes up and hugs her. His throat tightens as Colin lets go of Penelope looking like he’s about to tell her something when Marina Thompson runs up and hugs him. It plays like a scene from one of those muggle movies, Colin twirling around Marina, the two laughing breathlessly before Colin pulls away slightly and then kisses her. Cheers abrupt around the two, along with some catcalls and the two break apart a bit bashful but both grinning. But James can only look at Penelope, who smiles at the two even as her eyes glisten with what looks like unshed tears before hurrying away. And in that moment, James knew he would much rather see Penelope smiling hand in hand with stupid Colin Bridgerton than to see that look on her face again.
But James is nothing if not relentless and says nothing to Penelope when he drops one of her favorite candies in her lap the next night, doing his best to ignore the redness around her eyes. When he sees Marina and Colin walking hand in hand through Hogsmeade, he starts an argument with Eloise to distract Penelope. Or when Colin gives Marina roses in front of the Great Hall on Valentines Day, James and Michael pull one of their epic pranks that sends Penelope into a fit of giggles.
Come fifth year, James is feeling more confident about finally maybe asking Penelope to accompany him to Hogsmeade for a date (without their friends) when Colin and Marina break up. And James sees how Colin starts to spend more time with Penelope, though she never skips out on their tutoring sessions to spend more time with Colin thankfully, and sees how the other boy grins at Penelope and how Penelope soaks up his attention. So James decides to be a good friend and take a step back for Bridgerton to shoot his shot. And when Colin asks Penelope to be his date to the Yule Ball, James is tempted to sneak in some fire whiskey and drink his sorrows away.
Until he overhears the conversation between Colin and Eloise, sees that heartbroken look once more on Penelope's face and decides he’s done. Done playing the good friend and being a selfless prat. Bridgerton doesn’t want Penelope? More the pity to him but James is through giving Colin an opportunity to shoot his shot. It’s time for him to start making his own moves.
He asks Penelope the next day to meet him in the library later. When she arrives, she finds James sitting in their usual spot, holding her favorite  flowers and looking a bit sheepish. Her lips part in  shock. “James what on Earth…” she starts to say before he thrusts the flowers into her hands and runs a hand through his unruly hair. “So I know you're supposed to go with Bridgerton to the ball but from what I hear the blokes a right prat. I mean who ditches their date at the last minute for their ex who everyone knows was with another guy until a couple days ago? But well there's no accounting for taste,” he rambles before stopping himself and taking a deep breath. “Anyways I have a proposition for you. Since you don’t have a date to the ball anymore and I don’t have a date, we could go together. I actually wanted to ask you before but Bridgerton beat me to it so this isn’t me asking out of pity or anything. It’s just that I’d rather go with one of my friends than dance with some girl I barely know plus Eloise is always saying that you’re a great dancer and I’m not the best but I promise to not step on your-” “James,” Penelope interrupts, putting her hand up smiling. “You don’t need to convince me, I’d love to go with you.”
The night of the ball, James stands pacing in front of the Ravenclaw common room. His friends had already gone down, promising to meet up and Eloise Bridgerton had passed him a minute before on the arm of Theo. Glaring at him she growled, “if Pen comes back to the room feeling anything less than happy, I will make sure you and your ‘wand’ will never produce another Potter offspring” before continuing on her way.
Finally the door to the Ravenclaw common room swings open to reveal Penelope and for a moment James forgets how to breathe. He had long since realized how pretty Penelope is, with her long red curls, wide blue eyes flecked with gold, sweet smile, and her generous figure. But seeing her in that lovely pink gown, fiery curls pulled into some elegant updo, and her face painted with just the tiniest amount of makeup? He’s not sure how he ever thought of her as anything less than the stunning goddess she is.
Somehow, he manages to stutter out a compliment before offering her his arm and together they make their way to the great hall. And if he feels the tiniest bit of vindictive satisfaction at the look on Colin Bridgerton’s face when he spots them coming down the stairs then that's something he keeps to himself as he steers Penelope towards his fellow Marauders, though only he and Fred seemed to have secured dates for the ball .
At some point Eloise and Theo join them along with her sister Francesca who’s date just happens to Michaels cousin John (though the two claim they are just attending as friends) before Headmistress  McGonagall has the champions enter followed by everyone else.
The night seems to be going just perfectly. At dinner, James relishes how at ease Penelope seems to be with his friends (though he does notice how Theo seems a bit tense whenever Eloise starts a conversation with Philip). When it’s time for dancing, he is pleased to say that he doesn’t step on Penelope's toes once and he spends the next hour and a half taking turns to dance with Penelope or someone else in their group. But throughout it all he tries to ignore the feeling of someone burning holes into his head.
Perhaps the night would have ended just as perfectly too. If only Colin Bridgerton hadn’t decided to open his big mouth and ruin things. But what is a Yule Ball without the drama?
So this is just a basic outline leading up to the main idea of what I wanted to write for this story. Lets just say it’s like the Hermione and Ron argument in the 4th movie but with Colin and Penelope. I do have more ideas for this universe so please let me know if you would like to hear more. If you guys have any questions or even requests please feel free to message them to me, my ask box is open!
