The team wasn't unfamiliar with Elliot's flashbacks. They were typically triggered by small things, like loud noises or dark rooms, and they all manifested the same way; with Elliot frozen in place, tears leaking out of the corners of his wide, unblinking eyes and unintelligible mumbling followed by intense trembling of his whole body.

The team had witnessed many of these, and they'd learned a few methods to help bring Elliot out of it. The first was that Elliot seemed to respond best to physical touch, usually in the form of someone gently holding his hands. The second was kind words spoken softly and calmly into his ear. Finally, the third was patience. It wasn't easy to bring Elliot out of a flashback, especially when it was triggered by something larger. So, in order to bring him out of it, it was important for whoever was with him to be patient and calm throughout.

But nothing, not even the gentle methods the team had learned, could have prepared them for just how bad his flashbacks could get.

Nothing was out of the ordinary. The day started the same as always; the team ate breakfast together in the living room, Elliot sitting on the couch with his single slice of plain toast and cup of peppermint tea. He ate quietly, while the rest of the team chatted happily, making jokes and laughing with each other. Normally, he'd only eat about half of it, but on this particular day, he ate nearly the whole thing and drained his entire cup of tea.

He handed Landon the small sliver of toast he hadn't eaten, just like he did every morning, and stood up to take his empty mug to the kitchen. Elliot liked the routine. It was familiar and easy. Not much was expected of him, but it was just enough that he still felt useful. He liked making his own breakfast and doing his own dishes. He liked not being expected to talk when he didn't want to. As hard as it was to admit to himself, he liked his life with the team. They were nice to him. He trusted them.

As he was washing his mug in the sink, he couldn't help but stare out the window. Spring was swiftly approaching and Elliot couldn't look away as the morning rays of sun spilled through the gaps in the tree branches. He longed to go out there, to feel the warm sun on his face and the gentle breeze whistling through his hair.

Elliot couldn't remember the last time he'd been outside. It felt like years ago. It wasn't like he wasnt allowed to go outside. Of course he was...right? He'd never explicitly asked, but surely his friends wouldn't deny him that right. It's just that it was too cold before, that's all. There couldn't possibly be another reason.

"Elliot?"

The sound of another voice in the quiet kitchen pulled Elliot out of the endless spiral that was his thoughts. He started and gasped, only then realizing that the sink in front of him was quickly overflowing.

"Ah! I'm sorry, I'm sorry, I'm sorry!" Elliot exclaimed, quickly draining the water. His muscles tensed as he prepared to be hit.

"No need to be sorry, sweet," Broderick's voice said from behind him. Chills scurried up the back of Elliot's neck as he felt the looming presence of the medic but didn't turn to look at him. "It was an accident. Did you get distracted?"

Elliot suppressed a flinch. "Y-Yes, Sir. I'm so sorry. It-It won't happen a—" Elliot's mind went white as he felt Broderick's presence grow closer, the wood creaking beneath his feet. Elliot's whole body froze.

"El?" Broderick said. "You all right? You look a little pale."

Dull images flashed through Elliot's mind, none of which he could comprehend. They swirled together and dissolved like salt in the sea, invisible but impossible to deny the lingering taste. The sudden influx of repressed memories left a rotten taste in his mouth; memories of Christian softly approaching him from behind, touching him, dragging him to the bedroom, stripping him of his dignity. He couldn't take it. The panic set every nerve in his body on fire, and as Broderick's gentle hand fell upon Elliot's stiff shoulder, all hell broke loose.

Elliot swiftly turned and slapped Broderick's hand away. "Don't touch me!" He shouted, tears stinging his eyes.

Broderick backed up, eyes wide with confusion. "Okay, I'm sorry," he whispered. "I didn't mean to startle you."

The next thing Elliot knew, there was a soapy knife in his hand. He didn't remember how it got there, but he shakily pointed it at Broderick regardless. "Get away from me!" He demanded, voice quivering almost as much as the knife in his fist.

Broderick was dumbstruck. "Elliot, I'm not gonna hurt you. I'm just trying to—"

"Shut up!" Elliot interrupted. "D-Don't come any c-closer! I'll k-kill you!"

Broderick took a small, risky step toward the panicked boy before him. His voice was gentle and soft as he said, "Elliot—"

Elliot didn't waste a second before he swung the knife, slicing a thin gash across Broderick's forearm. Broderick gasped and hissed and stumbled backward just in time for the rest of the team to spill into the room.

"What is going on?" Karine questioned. Her eyes widened as she took in the sight before her. "Elliot?"

Tears were steadily trickling down Elliot's face. "L-Leave me alone! I w-won't let you t-take me! I won't!"

"Darling, no one is taking you anywhere," Yvonne tried to reassure him. "Please, put the knife down. It's just us."

"I don't think he's seeing us, Yve," Karine whispered. "Landon, I'm gonna need you to try and discreetly sneak up behind him and grab the knife. The three of us will distract him."

Lyra was frozen in place, unable to process what they were seeing.

As Landon soundlessly slipped away, Karine held out her hands placatingly. "Elliot, buddy? I'm gonna need you to put the knife down, okay? We're not gonna hurt you."

Elliot took a step back, arms shaking. "I w-won't let you t-take me!"

"We're not gonna touch you, I promise," Karine said. "We just wanna talk. Please put the knife down. You're gonna hurt yourself."

Elliot stood his ground, completely unaware of the giant man looming behind him. In one swift movement, Landon grabbed Elliot and plucked the knife out of his hands.

Elliot screamed in what could only be described as pure terror. He kicked and flailed, his fist nailing Landon right in the mouth before Landon caught both of his wrists and manhandled him. Elliot fought with every ounce of strength he could muster.

"LET GO OF ME! LET GO! YOU CAN'T DO THIS!!" Elliot cried.

Landon wrapped him in a tight hug and whispered soothingly into his ear, "It's okay, it's okay. You're safe, buddy. You're safe." Over and over again.

Elliot's struggling didn't cease, and eventually, Karine had to grab hold of his flailing legs as well to prevent him from injuring anyone else, most of all himself. "Set him on the ground!" Karine shouted over Elliot's screams.

Lyra watched, tears blurring their eyes as Elliot was restrained and wrestled to the floor, all while sobbing and screaming and begging. The sight made their insides churn and their throat tighten.

Elliot sobbed and squirmed, but his fighting did little to free him. "P-Please, l-let me go. Wh-Why are you d-doing this?"

"You've gotta come back to us, buddy," Karine said in the most gentle voice she could. "You're home, safe and sound. No one is going to hurt you anymore. Just take a deep breath." Karine glanced over her shoulder at Lyra, who was still as a statue. "Lye? Can you grab us a weighted blanket please? Lyra? Lyra!"

Lyra snapped out of it, their focus shifting from Elliot to Karine. "Y-Yes. I-I'll be right back." They hurried into their room and grabbed the heaviest weighted blanket they had. When they returned, Karine had released Elliot's legs and Landon only had a loose hold on Elliot's upper half.

The boy had ceased his struggling and had instead dissolved into a sobbing mess. As Lyra handed off the weighted blanket to Karine, Landon released Elliot. The blanket was draped over Elliot's shaking body.

"Lyra? Maybe you should try to talk to him," Karine suggested.

Lyra nodded and kneeled down beside him. "Sunshine? Can you hear me?"

Elliot kept his eyes trained on the floor and the droplets of crimson that Broderick had left behind. The smallest nod of his head was the only response he gave.

"How are you feeling?"

Lyra didn't expect an answer, or really any kind of indication that Elliot had heard them. They weren't surprised when Elliot remained completely frozen in place, eyes unblinking and skin as pale as bone.

Lyra didn't push Elliot to speak. Instead, they sat beside him as he watched Karine wipe up the blood. Once the kitchen floor was no longer peppered with red, Karine excused herself and left Lyra and Elliot to themselves.

Moments after Karine's departure, Elliot said, in the tiniest voice possible, "Did I h-hurt him?"

His voice was so small and meek that Lyra wasn't even completely sure that they'd heard him. "What was that, El?"

Elliot took a deep breath and repeated his question, a little louder this time. "D-Did I h-hurt him?"

Lyra didn't know how to answer. They didn't want to make him feel worse by being truthful, but they couldn't stand lying to him either. "It was just a little cut," they answered, keeping their voice soft so as not to frighten him. "Broderick will be fine. He's a medic, after all. He's used to dealing with this kind of stuff."

Those words did nothing to ease Elliot's grief. "I hurt him," Elliot mumbled, his voice quivering almost as much as the rest of him. Tears flooded his blood-shot eyes and he sniffled. "I'm a b-bad dog."

Lyra didn't know what to do. It had been nearly a month since Elliot had last called himself a dog, and the last thing they wanted was for him to regress. Internally panicking, Lyra said, "It wasn't your fault. I don't know what happened, but I know it wasn't your fault."

Elliot's tears started to fall. "H-How do you kn-know?"

"Because I know you," they asserted. Elliot finally looked up at them, eyes watery and filled with regret. Lyra gently wiped his tears. "You're a good person, Elliot. A good person that's gone through some terrible things. You've been hurt and taken advantage of and abused, but you are still a good person and you always will be. You'd never hurt anyone on purpose, let alone one of us."

Elliot looked away. "Is he m-mad at me?"

Lyra shook her head. "He could never be mad at you. No one here could. We love you too much."

Elliot sniffled again and leaned his head on her shoulder. Lyra opened her arms and gathered him in a tight hug. He laid his head on her chest, his remaining tears soaking through the fabric.

"I've got you, sunshine," Lyra whispered. Elliot snuggled against her, curling up on her lap like a child after a nightmare. There was no place on Earth he felt safer than in her arms. She rubbed gentle circles into her back and carded her fingers through his hair. "I've got you."

Lyra and Will is the best YA romance I've ever read. Not joking when I say I felt hollow for months when I read the part where they had to be separated at the end of 'The Amber Spyglass'.

Amir and Dafne did a fantastic job. I loved how they gave them more soft moments without cheapening their bond. Throughout the books, their relationship is incredibly delicate and subtly written (they're young after all) and they could have easily made it more obvious and over exaggerated for a Mainstream Audience. You'd think that wouldn't be possible but thats what Moira Walley Beckett did with Anne and Gilbert in 'Anne with an E' (that relationship basically consisted of staring at each other from a distance in that show rather than having a consistent build up)

I read an interview of Amir saying that he and Dafne never really looked at it as a romantic thing. It was more important that Will and Lyra were two friends that get along, and something might happen if it does happen. "When playing the scenes, it was never in the back of my mind" which is the way it should be approached with Lyra and Will because their relationship was not "framed as romantic" by Philip Pullman, it came naturally.

Edit: I wrote this analysis ^^ before my re-read and after re-reading the books I realised that was a bad approach to Lyra and Will's relationship. Even from the start, Lyra and Will's interactions are charged in the books and playing platonic until the finale at the end, is kind of a weird decision.

I personally always saw it as a deep bond between two teenagers, that became physical during the end because of everything they went through. It went beyond the typical romantic duality.

However, If I had to choose which version of their relationship I prefer (the book or the TV Show) I would have to choose the book. Because I felt during the last third, in the finale, that their relationship was a bit compacted like kiss -- you have to choose worlds -- separation. In the book, that part is so dragged out and emotional. Lyra and Will spend ages trying to find loopholes, find that there are none, then both of them get angry and upset. And it’s described that the angel felt their 'sorrows in the air'. In the tv show, I didn't really feel all that because everything was so 'get to the point' - when this is supposed to be a drawn out climax.

Unlike some others, I simultaneously believe that Lyra and Will are each others other half/soulmates. They are the only people in 'His Dark Materials' that can touch each others daemons without it being a violation and they will never love anyone else the way they loved each other. That's basically confirmed in 'The Secret of Commonwealth' (the spin off to 'His Dark Materials) where Lyra states that she still thinks of him every hour and that he’s the centre of her life.

And that their separation made sense.

Even though it was the most heartbreaking thing I ever read and left me hollow inside - its not realistic for them to have a solid relationship at 14 or how ever young they were at that point, especially on top of all their trauma. Also, it’s suggested in the books that everything must go back to the way that it was (closing all the windows) almost saying to the reader, you can't live in a fantasy world forever, you have to go back to the real world and live a full life. It’s like at the end of 'The Lord of the Rings' where Frodo destroys the ring, yet still dies at the end because of everything he went through.

It’s not fair. It’s not right. But thats just how life goes sometimes. Plus it made their ending a lot more memorable and iconic. I've actually gone to their real bench in Oxford and cried.

Although saying that, Philip Pullman has to let them see each other again when they're adults, in the last 'Book of Dust' - at least one last time come on now. But I have a feeling he won't reunite them until they die because he’s a cruel, cruel man.

👽 X-Files Crossover Fic Recs

The theme of International Fanworks Day in 2023 is When Fandoms Collide. So here are a bunch of very good X-Files crossover fics. Enjoy! Abner by Anonymous Mulder and Scully are assigned to investigate a possible serial killing in a small, very suburban neighborhood. The Beast Within by Yahtzee Also from the department of twisted crossovers comes this story – but I’ll leave the crossover for you to figure out as you go. Mulder and Scully’s journey to a troubled Louisiana town leads Scully to an encounter with a far more troubled man. Birdsong by @chekcough The plot of Silence of the Lambs, with Dana Scully replacing Clarice Starling, and a younger Agent Mulder, working in the B.S.U, assigned to help her. It is not at all necessary to have seen/read either 'The Silence of the Lambs' or 'The X-Files' to enjoy this. The Glimmering Girl by Tesla Mulder works a child abduction with Frank Black, while Scully is away for the weekend, but very much on Mulder’s mind. Homicidal Tendencies by Swikstr What begins as a typical ritual murder case with supernatural overtones for Mulder and Scully in Baltimore becomes something else as the two are forced to interact with some of the unique personalities on Charm City's murder squad. Scully's developing connection with a Baltimore homicide detective has far-reaching consequences in the evolution of her relationship with Mulder. Interagency (Mulder and Scully Meet the Director) by pinebluffvariant "You're wanted on a task force." Leap of Faith, parts 1 and 2 by Livengoo Sam Beckett has to keep Fox Mulder from becoming one more abductee, but when he leaps into Dana Scully's size fours he finds that might not be such an easy job. Letting Go by Joann Humby Mulder goes solo on a case in San Francisco. But when the killer isn’t what he was expecting, he needs the SF PD and the FBI’s finest to help him out. Lucky X in the City by @lilydalexf Samantha Jones meets Mulder in a bar. Fox hunting ensues. It’s more serious than it sounds. Samsara by Alicia K. Crossover of sorts, MSR of sorts. I don't want to say anything more, so we'll just let it go at that. Out of the Little Grove by @slippinmickeys I got an anon Tumblr prompt asking for an X-Files/His Dark Materials crossover in which Mulder & Scully were detectives in Lyra’s world. There may be some small liberties I took within the HDM world’s canon to make this story work for M&S, which I ask you to please forgive. Road Fools by denynothing1 Only one of the reasons that the X-File on a little town in Kansas is so thick it occupies its own drawer in the filing cabinet. She's Beauty, She's Grace by @sunflowerseedsandscience I was asked to write a Miss Congeniality/The X-Files mash-up… so here goes nothing. Travelling with Children by @seepunkrun and Sab In the armory we have: one revolver, some rope, a candlestick, a knife, a wrench, and a fork. Twilight, parts 1 and 2 by Shannon A serial killer is on the loose in Baltimore. Mulder and Scully are called in to assist the Homicide Squad in profiling and finding the killer before he strikes again.

"So how long are you planning to stay?" Lyra asked.

Colleen shrugged. "I have to be back home to pick up the kids and sign the divorce papers with Andrey on Monday, so I was hoping to stay for the whole weekend. Now that I've seen how things are going though, I understand if you want me to leave."

All eyes turned to Karine curiously, expecting her to deliver her final verdict, but the leader merely shrugged. "That's a discussion for all of us to have, and one of us isn't currently present. I don't want to make any decisions without Elliot's input."

Colleen nodded. "I suppose that's fair. Then, would you mind if I stayed for the day until all of you come to a decision?"

Karine shrugged again and folded her arms securely over her chest. "I don't see why not."

"Why don't we just make a decision now?" Yvonne wondered aloud. "Elliot's just in his room. What's the harm in having a group discussion now?"

"The harm is that Elliot's probably still a little sensitive and exhausted from his breakdown earlier," Karine stated.

"Exactly," Lyra added. "Think of it from his perspective. Imagine you just had a panic attack and then are suddenly pulled into a team meeting. It could really stress him out."

Yvonne nodded. "Fair, but I'm worried about leaving him alone in his room all day. Shouldn't someone go and check on him?"

Broderick rubbed a gentle hand over Yvonne's knee. "He's fine, Yve, don't worry. Why don't you and I check on him in a bit? Right now, he needs a bit of space."

Yvonne smiled at Broderick and rested her hand atop his. "Thanks, Rick. You're right. I just worry about him so much."

"We all do," Lyra said. "But Broderick is right. We can't suffocate him. We need to respect his boundaries."

Each present member of the team nodded their heads in agreement. Colleen smiled at the sight. "You know, it's refreshing to see how much you all care about one another."

Karine smiled back. "Of course we do. We're a family."

Colleen sighed, her smile wobbling. "It's good to know that Landon has found such a great family. Makes me a little jealous though, to be honest."

Landon scoffed and wrapped an arm around his little sister's shoulders. "You have nothing to be jealous of, Coll. I can't stand these people."

Landon laughed at his joke while Karine scoffed and kicked him in the shin. "Oh, is that right? Guess I'll be turning your room into my home gym, then."

"Why do you get dibs on Landon's room?" Broderick chimed in. "Wouldn't a medical center be a better use of the space?"

Yvonne giggled. "Personally, I've always wanted a home library."

"No one is doing anything to my room!" Landon yelled.

The room erupted into laughter, each present team member talking over one another; their voices grew louder with each word. Through the utter chaos, no one noticed the complete silence behind Elliot's door, nor the icy chill creeping in through his open window.

Elliot trudged down the quiet pavement, his once-fluffy socks completely soaked through from the snow. His t-shirt and sweatpants did little to shield him from the cold. His arms were wrapped tightly around his shivering body as tears froze on his rosy cheeks.

He had no idea where he was going, nor what had compelled him to leave the safehouse. He hadn't been outside since his rescue. Had it always been so bright?

Elliot wiped the tears and snot from his face and tried to quiet his unrelenting sobs.

Do you have any idea how pathetic you look right now? Imagine what people would think if they saw you like this. Maybe a new master will find you and take pity on you

Elliot clamped his eyes shut and furiously scrubbed at the tears on his face.

I bet your friends haven't even noticed you're gone. Even if they have, it's not like they'd come looking for you. Rescuing you is the biggest mistake they've ever made

A quiet whimper escaped Elliot's throat as a massive shiver scurried down his spine. Goosebumps rose on his exposed arms and the tear tracks on his face froze.

Elliot had been keeping his head low the whole time to avoid drying out his eyes in the icy wind. When he lifted his head to check where he was going, he raised his eyes just in time for a massive brick wall to appear in his path.

Elliot gasped as he collided with it, falling onto his backside in the snow. He held a hand to his aching forehead and burst into tears. What was he doing? Where did he think he was going? What was his plan?

Elliot curled up into a pathetic ball at the base of the brick wall and leaned back against it. He wrapped his quivering arms around himself and buried his face between his knees. "Wh-What am I d-doing?" He whispered to himself. Maybe the vicious voice in his head was right. Maybe a nice owner would stumble across him and take pity on a stupid, ugly mutt like him. Maybe he'd finally find a place where he could belong.

. . .

As the hours ticked by and there was still no sign of Elliot, Lyra began to grow worried. If he was sleeping, they didn't want to disturb him, but surely he must've been getting hungry. Yvonne was almost finished with supper and Elliot hadn't so much as shown his face once since they left him.

Lyra couldn't help but imagine the worst. What if Christian had come back for him and simply waited for him to be left alone? What if he was already gone and no one had any idea?

In that moment, Lyra had made up her mind. They needed to check on him. They needed to know that he was safe and healthy, just to give themself some peace of mind.

With the sounds of raucous laughter penetrating the walls from the next room over, Lyra stood before Elliot's door and gave it a gentle knock. "Sunshine? It's just me. Can I come in?" When nothing but silence answered, panic began to seep into Lyra's chest, little by little. Their first thought was that he was asleep, but they couldn't help but imagine the worst.

In order to ease their growing anxiety, Lyra gently pushed the door open and peered into the quiet stillness of Elliot's room. As their gaze fell upon his empty bed, their stomach dropped. "Elliot?" They called out as they stepped further into his room. Their panic gripped their stomach and squeezed.

Not again. Please, not again

"Elliot?" Their voice was shakier now. "Please, come out. It's just me; it's Lyra. I just wanted to check on you. I promise everything is okay. Please just come out."

Nothing.

The only sound in the room was that of the winter wind whistling as it crept into the room. It was only then that Lyra noticed the open window and the flurries of snow drifting onto the floor in front of it.

The blood drained from Lyra's face and her breathing ceased completely. "No," she whispered to herself. Her knees weakened and her mind went white.

No, no, no, no, no

"Lyra?" Yvonne's concerned voice said as she knelt beside her panicking friend. In their panicked state, Lyra hadn't even noticed that they'd fallen, nor had they noticed when Yvonne arrived. "What's wrong? Are you okay?"

Lyra's breathing was erratic and their heart was pounding so loud that they nearly missed what Yvonne had said.

"He's-He's gone. Elliot's gone. I-I can't find him. He's gone!" It was with those words that Lyra's resolve completely collapsed and they burst into tears. They wrapped their shaking arms around themself and released a guttural scream of frustration and grief.

Elliot didn't know how long he'd been gone. After a short rest beside that brick wall, he had since resumed his endless wandering. Cars rushed by him and people milled all around him, some sending judgemental glances his way. Time seemed to move in slow motion the longer Elliot walked.

His thoughts were muddled and his movements were sluggish. Nothing around him seemed real and he began to wonder if this was all just another nightmare.

With that thought bouncing around his otherwise silent mind, a tall man harshly brushed against his shoulder.

"Watch it, kid!" The man shouted.

Elliot had to regain his balance, the momentum nearly knocking him off his feet. He looked up at the man and cringed at the sound of his booming voice. "S-Sorry, Sir. I-I wasn't looking."

The man's face twisted and he studied Elliot with curious eyes. "Do I know you?"

Elliot's skin prickled under the man's gaze. "I-I don't th-think so, S-Sir."

The man stalked closer and Elliot nearly whimpered in fear, but he caught himself.

"You look really familiar. What's your name?"

"E-Elliot, S-Sir." The thought to lie hadn't even crossed his mind until after the words left his lips.

The man shook his head and pursed his lips. "I don't know any Elliots. You sure that's your name?"

Elliot nodded, keeping his eyes trained on the ground. "I-I think so, S-Sir. It's what e-everyone c-calls me."

"Why do you keep calling me 'Sir'?" The moment the words left the man's lips, his eyes widened with recognition. "Oh shit. I know exactly who you are." Elliot shrunk beneath the man's scathing glare and devilish grin. "You're Christian's little whore, aren't you."

Elliot gasped and his eyes grew round as saucers. Tears flooded his eyes. He'd been so worried about running into Master all this time that he never even considered the possibility of running into one of Master's friends.

His voice was shaking uncontrollably as he said, "I-I don't know what you're t-talking about."

The man chuckled darkly and took another step toward Elliot. "I barely recognized you with all those clothes on, but it's definitely you. I've been wondering when Chris was gonna invite us over for another play session with you."

Hot tears trickled down Elliot's half-frozen cheeks.

"Where is your master, anyway? A pretty little thing like you shouldn't be wandering out here all alone. Maybe I should take you home to your master."

Elliot gasped. "N-No, p-please! I-I can't go back there! He was s-so c-cruel to me. P-Please, Sir. I'll do a-anything."

The man's devilish grin grew sadistic and Elliot's stomach dropped. "I really hope you mean that."

"I-I do, I s-swear. I'll do a-anything you want, just please don't t-take me b-back to him."

The man chuckled. "You know, I haven't been able to stop thinking about what your little mouth can do." Elliot's insides churned. "Maybe you should service me and I'll consider being generous if you do a good job."

Elliot instantly dropped to his knees. "I-I will! I'll be good, I promise!"

The man sharply grabbed Elliot by his bicep and hauled him to his feet. "Not here, you stupid slut!" He hissed through gritted teeth. Elliot squeaked as the man's fingernails dug into his soft skin. "There are too many people here. Follow me." The man yanked him down a narrow alleyway, where he sharply smacked Elliot's backside and shoved him back down to his knees. "There. Now, be a good boy and maybe I'll let you go free."

Elliot nodded frantically. "Y-Yes, Sir." Despite his best efforts, Elliot couldn't help the dread pooling in the pit of his stomach as the man began to unbuckle his belt.

It won't take long. Just have to let him do what he wants and he'll let me go. Then this will never have to happen again

Elliot's mind clouded over, his thoughts lost in the fog, and despite his best efforts, he started to cry.

As the man discarded his leather belt, Elliot flinched and whimpered, which alerted the man to his distress.

"Oh, you poor thing," the man said, his tone sounding genuine. His large hand gently grasped Elliot's chin and tilted his head up. Elliot looked into the man's hazel eyes, though his tears distorted the image. "Don't cry, pet." The man wiped away the younger man's fallen tears with his free hand. "I'm not gonna hurt you. In fact, I'll tell you what; if you do a good job, I might just consider taking you home with me."

Elliot sniffled. Those words did nothing to ease his distress. "R-Really, Sir?"

The man nodded and smiled. "Sure. I mean, how could I, in good conscience, leave such a pretty thing like you to become a stray?" He ran his fingers through Elliot's hair and gently caressed his cheek. "You'd be eaten alive out here. You'd be much safer, and more useful as my slave." The man's grip tightened on the back of Elliot's head, his fist knotting in Elliot's long hair. "Now, be a good toy and—"

"Elliot!"

Both Elliot and his assailant turned their heads in the direction of the voice, only to see several large individuals barreling down the alleyway.

Elliot gasped.

They noticed I was gone?

As they came into focus, Elliot recognized every one of his friends. Even Colleen was there, though she stayed near the back, wearing a worried expression and holding her hands over her mouth in shock.

Lyra was at the front of the group, a hand gun clasped between both of her hands. "Get away from him!" They shouted, aiming their gun at the man's forehead.

The man's grip tightened on Elliot's hair and he threw the boy against the back wall of the alley. Elliot yelped and crumpled to the ground in a pile of snow, hot tears thawing his half-frozen cheeks.

Lyra leveled their finger on the trigger, their hands as steady as stone. "I don't know who you are or what you want, but you're gonna step away from my brother before I paint these brick walls with your blood."

Elliot's eyes widened.

Brother?

The man scoffed. "No offense, lady, but you must be mistaken. If you're looking for your brother, he's not here." He gestured to Elliot. "This is just some common whore that belongs to a friend of mine."

Elliot's face turned bright red and a loud sob escaped his throat.

Lyra's eyes narrowed. "Christian Whitlock?"

The man raised a brow. "You know him?"

Lyra's brows narrowed. "Yeah, I know him. He's the monster that kidnapped, tortured, and raped my little brother."

Elliot completely broke down at that. He'd never wanted Lyra to know. He'd never wanted anyone to know. Now, everything was out in the open. There were no more secrets. It was all over. He buried his face in his hands and wept.

The man looked genuinely perplexed at this revelation. "That's—That's not true. Chris said he bought it. He said it sold itself to him."

A fiery anger burned behind Lyra's eyes. "Let my brother go."

The man shook his head. "Wait, hold on. You're telling me that Chris—"

Lyra clicked the bullet into place. "Now!"

The man flinched and raised his hands above his head. "Okay, okay, fine. Just don't shoot." Keeping his eyes on Lyra, the man gently helped Elliot to his feet. Elliot was trembling and sobbing. He was soaked to the bone and shivering uncontrollably on top of his terrified shaking. The man nudged Elliot in Lyra's direction, but the moment he let go of him, Elliot fell to his knees, weeping and hugging himself as tight as physically possible.

Lyra lowered her gun and instantly dropped to their knees beside Elliot, wrapping him in a loving embrace. "Oh, sunshine, are you okay? Are you hurt? I was so worried."

Elliot could hardly speak through the heavy sobs that wracked his small, underfed body. He kept his eyes clamped tightly shut, too distraught to even look at Lyra.

Broderick kneeled beside them and set a soft hand on Lyra's shoulder. "Lye? Let's get him to the car. I can check him for injuries there."

Lyra nodded. "Elliot? I'm gonna pick you up, okay?" Elliot didn't respond, so Lyra went ahead and gently lifted him into their arms. Almost instantly, he clung to them like a child to their mother, sobbing into her shoulder. Lyra gently rubbed his back. "Shh, it's okay. I'm here. I've got you. We're going home now."

The man watched them, still aghast by the news he'd been given. As Lyra carried Elliot to the waiting vehicle, Karine approached the man at the back of the alley. "What's your name?"

The man shook the fog from his mind and said, "Uh...R-Ryan Cooper."

Karine quietly repeated the name back to herself once before she said, "Great, thanks. I'll be reporting you to the authorities for sexual assault and accessory to kidnapping." Karine turned to leave without another word.

Ryan's eyes widened. "Wait, I swear I didn't know." Karine glanced back at him over her shoulder. "Christian told me the kid was a sex worker. He told all of us that. We had no idea he'd been kidnapped."

Karine's expression didn't change. "Save your excuses for the jury." She turned to leave again, but Ryan grabbed her arm to hold her back.

"Wait! Please!" Karine glowered at him and he instantly released his grip on her. He held his hands up placatingly. "I'm sorry, but I can help. As long as you don't report me, please."

"Give me one good reason why I shouldn't."

Ryan didn't even have to think about it before he blurted, "I can tell you where Christian is."

Karine's hard expression softened ever-so-slightly. "I'm listening."

Chapter 20 is finally here!! Sorry for the long wait, but seeing as this is my 20th chapter, I wanted it to be a little more whumpy than my normal chapters. I was really unhappy with how it was coming along, so that's part of the reason why it's been so long. The other main reason is holidays and traveling put writing on the backburner a bit.

Next up is a drabble request that's been sitting in my inbox for months, and I'm so excited to finally get to it! So stay tuned for that!
