Asleep In The Keep: A DP x BNHA fic
Summary: Danny goes out with his new face
Word count: 2851
Chapter 17: Coffee Beans
17/?
There was one blessing to come out of last night, Danny now could go out into public and not worry about being arrested! Would he be arrested or would they call it being apprehended? He knew nothing of this world’s legal system, the only law he did know was that using your quirk in public without a license was illegal. He supposed that made a little sense? You had to be 16 to get a car license, even if you could reach the pedals when you were younger. They probably had a test that you took around the same age to get the license, so you could understand the responsibility and all that. The news was probably freaking out because they didn’t know if he had one or not. Stupid bureaucracy.
Still, it’s nice to see his human face again, he had almost forgotten what it looked like. He touched his face again, it wasn’t smooth like human skin, it was tough and didn’t stretch unless he pulled it. He felt like a doll, something non-living trying to replicate being human, being familiar. It was uncanny how every little detail of a ghost was them trying to imitate their human selves. They were so close, but everything little thing set them further apart. It was sad as much as it was desperate.
Danny sighed. He had to reminder, despite everything, it was still him. He still glowed a little, but if he concentrated enough he could turn it off. He also had the pleasure of ignoring his blue skin since the hazmat suit covered everything. If he ignored everything inhuman about himself, he looked like how he did before he went into the portal. Since alternate dimensions and realities exist, maybe this is what he looks like in one of them. A reality where he didn’t die and just got cool powers. Other him was probably still with his family right now…He doubted it though. If such a reality were real, Tucker was probably the mayor because of how little sense it made. Of course he would die if he got zapped to hell and back (literally). But it was pointless to wonder about these types of things.
Danny snapped back to the task at hand. He still hadn’t gotten the chance to really explore the place. The last time he was out didn’t really count since he was paying more attention to Deku than the surrounding area. Danny has also been putting off looking for the portal so who knows, maybe this time he’ll just walk into it. That’d be convenient. In the end Danny didn’t really need to have a justification for himself to go outside, but it helped him from feeling less lazy. He was (practically) an adult and could do what he liked.
Right now he was pondering his updated human disguise. While his clothes covered the remaining blue skin, they were so conspicuous that it would give him away immediately (he kinda regrets giving Deku his jacket). All he had left was the hat and mask, but that wouldn’t help at all. He still had his old disguise, but he found it in the garbage and hasn’t washed it since. Danny stared at the clump of old clothes on the floor, it smelled like wet onions. He briefly debated it, he’s been in stinkier situations, but grimaced. He already stole once it’s not gonna hurt to steal again.
He flew out undetected to the same shop as before. There were no new deliveries since then, so he had to go inside the store warehouse. There were still unpacked boxes so Danny just phased his hand inside and grabbed what felt like a jacket. He didn’t get any time to inspect it before a retail worker (who looked like a cat-boy) walked in. He sat in one of the baskets and started crying about customers. Danny suddenly felt bad for stealing… Not bad enough though, he quickly got out of there.
He went to an empty alley behind the store to check out his newest steal. It was a zip-up hoodie whose main colors were yellow and white. Something seemed familiar about it but Danny couldn’t put his finger on it. There were also letters on the front with a G sandwiched between to F’s, and had white strips on the arms. It was really starting to bother Danny where he knew this from. Maybe he just saw it at the Hero Museum and the design just got stuck in his head? He did see a lot of heroes when he was with Deku, though that doesn’t mean he paid complete attention (the kid could ramble), but he did try his best. Danny checked the tag and it had a little cartoon of a man with a big body and a little head wearing the hoodie…
OHHHHHH! That’s right, Danny ran into this guy when he first came here. What was his name? Bubble gum? Big Gum? Something like that, he knew it had something to do with Gum. Maybe the guy could stretch out his limbs and body like a character he saw from an anime (it was one of Tucker’s favorites).
He looked at the jacket and then back at the store, briefly debating returning it and getting a different one. He didn’t want to interrupt the worker there, even if he couldn’t see him (he needed the space), and it wasn’t that big of a deal. The hero was just weird (which was a crime Danny was also guilty of). It didn’t really matter in the end what he wore, as long as he covered his upper half (the bottom passes as cargo pants). He put the jacket on without any more hassle.
He looked at his reflection in a store window close by. He looked pretty human if he did say so himself. The standard wasn’t high here either, he did just see a cat boy, after all.  No ones gonna notice or care if he has sharper than normal canines or gray hairs. He could always wear the mask and put the hood up if anyone stared. Wait no, that would make him look so creepy. Maybe just one at a time. Now reassured, Danny walked into the throng of people outside the alley. He had no way of tracking time here (time flies by when you're dead), but from all the teens in the street it must’ve been a weekend (that or after school). He missed weekends (when ghosts didn’t attack) and he got to be a kid again. He was only 17, how did he get so old so fast?
He lifted his hood up and joined the throng. He had no idea where he was going so just followed whatever felt right. He was downtown and so got to see plenty of shops. He still had no money, so he didn’t go into most of them. One he did go into was whatever the Japanese equivalent of a bodega was. It was humid and smelled bad, but temperature didn’t affect him and he didn’t need to breathe so he was able to browse around comfortably. It was mostly hero themed knick-knacks and off-brand American brands (or maybe it was the brand in that dimension?). Most of the hero stuff was that buff guy Deku was into, Danny was pretty sure his name was All Might (that was one of the only names that stuck since the kid kept talking about him). He looked like if the American flag threw up and a baby crawled out of it (like the girl from the Ring) and then grew up to be a hero. Danny cringed. It was too much. They also had other figurines like an angry looking fire-man, but Danny didn’t recognize any of them. He must’ve been staring too long cause an employee went up to him and asked him if he was gonna buy anything in a sickly sweet voice. Danny shook his head no and the person's face turned sour and he walked off, still eyeing Danny and mumbling something about tourists. Danny got the hint and left the store.
A similar pattern happened at other stores as well (although most of them were more pleasant). A lot of them were able to clock something other about Danny, and interpreted that as him being a foreigner, and asked him a lot of questions. Apparently he also had an accent and people kept trying to guess where it was from. They were shocked when Danny told them it was American, one guy (apparently a linguist) straight up told him he was wrong. She told him that it was too “throaty” (whatever that meant) to be American and insisted it was more Latin or Spanish in origin. Danny said, “Ah you caught me.” and just walked away from the conversation. People can be so weird.
It was during this time that something he noticed from before kept popping up. When people talked, their mouths didn't match their words. When Danny first came into the world, he thought he just had a concussion (but you need a brain to have a concussion), but his new theory is that sound travels differently here so that’s why their mouths are weird. He didn’t notice the same problem for anything else, but maybe the biology is different here and it gets expressed in weird ways.
Danny came upon a coffee shop. It had two stories; the 2nd probably being where the owner lives; and the bottom being the actual shop. There were no signs on the building except “Coffee & Tea” in gold letters, and it was pretty plain on the outside. It had one massive window that looked into the shop and Danny could see empty seats and little figurines on a shelf. The place would’ve looked closed if it weren’t for the door being prop slightly open. They were probably starting to close since It was late so not a lot of people would be out getting coffee.
Danny was gonna walk past it when he noticed shadows dancing on the alley walls beside it. There were grunts and pained noises that echoed off the walls. It made his core leap out wanting to defend them. Danny bolted in the direction of the sound, and his footfalls echoed in the ally from the puddles on the ground. Before he reached the corner, he heard something fall over and a panicked voice. Within the second, Danny reached the end and was able to see an old man sweating as he bent down to pick up a box that had fallen over. They both looked at eachother, confused.
“Oh sorry kid, thought you were somebody else,” the old man recovered quicker than Danny, and he let out a small laugh. Danny didn’t know who the man was expecting, but it was clear something was going on in that alley. Whatever it was, it wasn’t any of Danny’s business.
“I heard noises and thought someone was hurt?” Danny cocked his head, still confused by the situation. The old man started struggling again to pick up the box. There was an open van with similar sized boxes still packed in. “Do you need any help with that?” Danny didn’t know what was going on but he couldn’t not not help an old man. He offered his hand out to the man, not that he expected him to hand him the box, but more of a gesture of good will.
“No, it’s alright,” he shook his head and stood up, eyeing Danny. His back was bent and he put a hand on his lower back to straighten his posture, Danny could hear several pops and cracks. Now standing slightly hunched, the old man was about 5’3, and looked like there was nothing but bones and wire under his clothes.  “I may not look at it but I can take care of myself.” Clearly, Danny thought to himself.
The man watched him as he bent down to grab the box again. Danny stopped him by just grabbing it for him. The air between them was so awkward that all Danny could do was smile nervously. A soft but slow trickling sound came from the box and he looked down to see tons of beans spilling from a hole. Thank god it’s not drugs, Danny thought. He moved one of his hands to cover the hole, and then flipped it around so it was at the top. The old man had been eyeing Danny suspiciously since he got there (why are people so paranoid here?), but his gaze shifted more to confusion as the seconds ticed past. He gave Danny one final up and down and then squinted as he let out a breath. He grabbed a pair of glasses (but honestly they looked like goggles with how big they were), and cleaned them off on his shirt. When he looked at Danny again his eyes widened and he jumped back. Danny just nodded, used to that reaction. He stepped back, as if he had to get more space to look at the entirety of Danny. He seemed to have come to a decision.
“What’s your name kid?” He asked Danny, although he still looked apprehensive about him.
“Da-” Danny swallowed his tongue, “-amn. What a crazy question?” if ghosts could sweat, the alley would be flooded. The old man tilted his head back and laughed.
“Want to give that another try?” He smiled at Danny knowingly. The glasses made his eyes look big and manic and the lens had a green tint to them.
Danny thought about the name that he found in the library. Since he was still a ghost he couldn’t get his picture taken but it still helped cement some things in his mind.
“Thomas,” Danny paused, “or Tommy is fine?” Thomas was too formal for his liking, he doesn’t even like being called Daniel, and he chose that name.
“Nice name, kid.” Oh he knows. The old man put the glasses back into his pocket and sat against the wall of the shop. Despite his small size, the man seemed so much bigger than Danny. He looked at Danny again and shook his head and laughed “Well Tommy, since you’re already holding that box, would you like to load the rest of them in?”
Danny nodded. He was already this far and it would be rude to say no.
Danny was finishing unloading all that was left in the van. The man meanwhile was leaning against the wall fiddling with some type of screw or file and little block. He would watch Danny and bark orders occasionally about where to put stuff or to be careful with something. Danny didn’t really pay attention to the man much, he just focused on the boxes or other random thoughts that came into his head.
From the sounds within the packages, most of them were full of loose coffee beans. Danny didn’t find it suspicious until he unloaded actual bean bags with fancy words in fancy fonts on it. Why would there be loose beans in the packages and not in the bags like the others? Was there something else in the boxes that the beans hid? But again, none of his business.
Danny was directed to put all the boxes into the small room that connected to the outside. It was bare of anything except another door to get into the shop’s kitchen or storage room. It seemed more like a weird decontamination room than one leading into a café.
“Don’t you want me to unload it in the actual shop? I’m not really doing anything right now so it would be no issue.” Danny was still raised with manners, plus he really wanted to know what was in the boxes.
“No, it's fine.” The old man got up from his spot, “I have people to do that later.” He came up to Danny and handed him something. Was this hush money?! “Here’s my card.” It was sleek and professional looking, not something that a café owner would handout (unless it was for his other business). Maybe Danny walked into a weird smuggling ring and was now being invited to join said smuggling ring. “I’m always on the lookout for… people like you to come work for me, if you’re willing?” He smiled and it was all teeth.
“I don’t have a phone” Danny said with a blank face. It was true since his phone was with his other pair of legs that he no longer had access to.
“You should fix that.” he had an annoyed look on his face but it also looked amused. “Oh well,” he shrugged and took back the card as if he didn’t care what happened next, “If you change your mind, just ask the door for “Tanaka” and I’ll be right out.” And with that he slipped inside the dark room and shut the door. Danny could hear six instantaneous clicks of locks sliding into place.
Definitely sketchy.

The conference room was quiet. It wasn't the nice, comforting type of quiet, no. It felt dense and thick,  with tension hanging heavily in the air. All that could be heard was the soft drumming of Sero's fingers against the wooden table.
He took a deep breath, gazing over at the blonde seated beside him. He was fidgeting, messing with his fingers while he bounced his knee. Seeing Kaminari anxious didn't help his nerves in the slightest.
Meetings like this were never good, especially when it was just him and Kaminari without the other sidekicks. They were probably going to get chewed out for something, but what? He flitted through the possibilities in his head. A patrol gone wrong maybe? Another one of Kaminari's dumb instagram posts blowing up? Or maybe it was the time Kamui Woods caught him playing solitaire on his computer when instead of writing a report. But Sero doubted that he would care enough about that to call a meeting. He hardly even said anything to him when it happened. He just gave him a dirty look and shrugged it off.
As if he read his mind, in came Kamui woods, with his coworkers and Sero's other bosses, Mount Lady and Edgeshot. It was rare for all three of them to be together, especially not for a meeting. This was bad. This was really bad. Are they getting fired?
"Relax, you're not in trouble." Edgeshot reassured them, sensing their panic. Sero's shoulders dropped slightly, his muscles releasing all the tension and anxiety that had been building up inside. Kaminari let out a small sigh of relief and slumped back into his chair.
"We called this meeting because we had some news we wanted to share with you," Kamui chimed in. He picked up the remote from the table, clicking a button that turned the projector on.
"In a few days, a new sidekick will be joining you. Her name is-"
Mount Lady practically shouted her name, interrupting Kamui and gesturing wildly to the image that flashed on screen behind her. A photo of a beautiful young woman appeared on screen. Sero studied her features, her soft smile and bright eyes, the curve of her face, and her hair style and hero uniform. Kaminari nudged Sero slightly with his elbow, mumbling something about how attractive she was, earning himself an eye roll.
"She was ranked highly as a sidekick, staying in the top ten consistently and even reaching the top five in her nation. She took a break a few years back but now she'll be joining you guys!" Mount Lady rambled excitedly. It made sense. A popular sidekick will improve their ratings, and it could probably help Sero and Kaminari rank up too. But why were they the first to hear about it? Why not tell everyone at once? He couldn't help but ask.
"That's great and all, but why didn't you tell Mineta and Shiozaki?"
"Since she's going to be your priority. As we mentioned before, she's not from here. She isn't very fluent in Japanese, but you can speak her language, Sero. So, it'll be your responsibility to translate for her." Edgeshot replied,  "From now on, the three of you are going to be a team."
--
"We're sorry it had to end this way, but your compliance is greatly appreciated." You stared at the carpeted floor beneath you, refusing to look anywhere else. They were all staring, watching you, their eyes burning through your body. All you could do was sit and listen as the lawyers spoke to you.
Everyone knows now. They all know.
You should be ashamed. You're disgusting. You're a monster.
Bright morning light peeked through the curtains, shining on your sheets. It had been at least three days since you left your bed due to your exhaustion from the jet lag. All you wanted to do was sleep, until now, when your stomach is twisting with hunger, the pain becoming almost sickening.
You eventually got out of bed, but only after the delivery guy dropped your food off at your door. When you picked up the bag, you didn't expect to see a box next to it, addressed to you from your new agency, The Lurkers. Your curiosity outweighed your hunger, and you found yourself opening the box with a pair of scissors.
Reaching in, you grabbed the fabric lifting it up and raising it above you to look at. Black as night colored polyester with nylon and copper material, perfect for your quirk. It looked just like what you envisioned, if not better. You turned the body suit to the side, studying the bright yellow streaks and lightning bolts. It was perfect. It was yours.
It had been over two years since you last had a hero costume. There had been a time where you never wanted to wear one again. Where just the thought of it made you sick to your stomach and filled with dread. But now, here you were with your very own hero costume, based off your design. It's pure, untouched, perfect, fresh, clean, and new. Like everything is now.
You blinked the tears away as you held the costume against your body, hugging it to your chest. This was your chance to start over again. A fresh start. A clean slate. It was just what you needed and you weren't going to take it for granted. You're going to take every opportunity you can get to become the hero you always wanted to be, and nothing is going to hold you back. Not anymore.
You grabbed your phone, taking a picture and texting it to your aunt, before setting it down on the table. Before you went to eat, you noticed something left in the box. It was a little slit of paper, with Japanese characters that you couldn't translate inscribed on it. Underneath was a message written in your language.
"Looking forward to meeting you next week - The Lurkers"
You smiled to yourself, feeling hope and excitement flicker in your chest.

My Hero Superman AU; Oneshot Special, Superboy’s Final Exam Feat. Special Guests
At one of UA’s Many Training Grounds;
Nezu(addressing all the students of UA in a viewing room): Today we have something special lined up for everyone.
Nezu: Instead of your normal classes, we will instead be conducting a special evaluation of a very special student, and you have all been welcomed to watch.
Ochaco(holding Eri, who is wearing a Superboy jacket her grandmother made her, in her lap): It’s Izu-kun, isn’t it?
Bakugo(annoyed): LIKE HELL ITS THE NE-
Nezu(interrupting him with a smile): EXACTLY MS. URARAKA!!!
Bakugo(whining like a little kid): GODDAMNIT!!!
Nezu(explaining to the confused students): Mr. Midoriya has been revealed to the world as the son of Superman, a man whose power many have regarded as being equal or greater than Allmight’s own!
Nezu(as students begin murmuring amongst themselves): Today, for his final exam, we decided to have him face off against a select group of pro-heroes.
Meanwhile in the Fake City;
Superboy(standing at the entrance in his costume): Well, this ought to be interesting, I might even have the chance to see how far I’ve come!
Nezu(over the speakers): The exam begins now!
Izuku immediately starts flying into the fake city and begins scanning the city with his x-ray and microscopic visions, and his super-hearing looking for the Pros he’ll have to fight.
While flying he’s suddenly hit with a barrage of hard feathers from behind, causing him to stop and turn around while hovering in mid-air to find the cause. He finds himself face to face with a blond man with birds wings. This is the Pro-hero, Hawks.
Superboy(with excitement in his voice): Oh my god, you’re Hawks! YOU’RE IN THE TOP 5!
Hawks(smirking): It’s nice to be recognized by an up and coming young hero.
Hawks(getting serious): But don’t forget, this is still an exam, you can fanboy afterwards.
Superboy(shrugging his shoulders): If you say so.
Superboy immediately moves faster than Hawks can react and tackles him out of the sky. He sends them both hurtling through multiple buildings before they end up in a simulated demolition zone. Shortly after they land, the wood hero, Kamui Woods, arrives.
Kamui(speaking into his comms as he heads into the building): They’re in the demolition site, I’m heading in to give Hawks backup.
Mirku(making her way there): NOT WITHOUT ME YOU’RE NOT!!! I WANT A SHOT AT HIM!!!
Kamui(at the entrance): Don’t bother Mirku, Hawks and I should be enough to subdue him before you and the others get here.
Meanwhile in the Observation Room with the students and Principal of UA, Mount Lady and Endeavor hear Kamui’s comment and groan to themselves.
Mt Lady(facepalming): He’s an idiot.
Endeavor(standing next to her and nodding his head): Agreed.
Kendo(turning to her confused): Why?
Mt Lady(explaining): Unlike the other heroes taking part, I actually looked up to Superman when he was around.
Mt Lady(as Kamui Woods enters the building): So I know that one of his abilities is the perfect counter to Kamui’s quirk…
Kamui Woods then spots two glowing red dots in the darkness. He realizes all too late that the “dots” are Superboy’s glowing eyes. He attempts to create a shield of wood, only for two red hot beams of fire to shoot out of Superboy’s eyes, burning his makeshift shield.
Mt Lady(as the beam is shown flying out of the building): Heat Vision.
As Mirku and other pros arrive, they see the occasional beam of heat vision shooting out, branches of wood sprouting out, and some of Hawks’ feathers flying out some windows. This continues until both Kamui and Hawks are thrown through a wall and land on top of the startled Present Mic.
A blue and red blur then shoots out of the building grabbing Mirku by her collar.
Superboy(holding her up with a smirk): So, what can you do?
Mirku attempts to kick him in the face, only to have no affect whatsoever.
Mirku(stunned): How?!
Kamui(launching branches of wood towards them): LACQUERED CHAIN PRISON!!!
Superboy throws Mirku aside and begins batting the branches aside until they start pushing him back and manage to ensnare him. Eraserhead then stares at him with his quirk in an attempt to keep Izuku contained.
Superboy(while looking amused): Tree branches really?
Superboy(while looking at them with his eyes glowing, showing that Erasure has no effect): You’re funny.
Superboy then begins flexing and breaking the branches holding him, forcing the heroes to take cover and hide as he breaks free. Superboy then looks around and finds Eraserhead hiding behind some rubble with his x-ray vision.
Superboy: You know I can see you, right?
Eraserhead(startled as Superboy appears right in front of him): DAMNIT!!!
Eraserhead attempts to use his scarf to pull himself up a nearby construction site, only for Superboy to intercept the end of the scarf and burn it off, leaving it significantly shortened. He then uses his ice-breath trap Eraserhead in place, before leaving to make short work of the other heroes.
Eraserhead(thinking to himself): My quirk didn’t have any effect on him! How is that possible?!
Endeavor(smirking, thinking): He’s just as strong as you were Hisashi…
Endeavor(seeing Izuku easily dispatch the rest of the other pros): And it seems he also got Inko’s warrior’s intuition as well.
Mt Lady(grinning): He really is the next Man of Steel.
Bakugo(annoyed): Why do people keep calling him that?!
Mt Lady(turning to him, annoyed): Superman was called the “Man of Steel”, not just because he was seemingly invincible, but because he was also unbending when it came to protecting everyone and letting them know that they mattered.
Bakugo(scoffing): What a load of-
Endeavor(annoyed): I’d shut your mouth boy! Before it gets you in trouble.
Bakugo turns to the pro about to retort when he finds himself put to sleep by Midnight, who was also starting to get annoyed by his unjustified arrogance.
Momo(looking at the screen, seeing an object moving quickly towards Izuku, as he was finishing securing the pros): What’s that?
Endeavor(looking at the object in annoyance): THAT would be the muscle-bound idiot, All Might.
Endeavor(starts grinning): This’ll be good.
Mt Lady(getting excited): This is gonna be awesome! It’s basically All Might vs Superman!
Eri(getting excited in her mother, Ochaco’s arms): GO PAPA!!!
The girls(and some boys) of both 1-A and 1-B, along with Midnight and Mt Lady, feel their hearts clench from the cuteness of they little girl they just met cheering for her adopted father.
With Superboy, he had just finished restraining Mirku against a safety railing in the construction site by bending the rails around her arms and legs in a way that wouldn’t cut off the flow of blood. He starts hovering back down to ground level, when an object falls out of the sky, leaving a giant impact crater in front of him.
The dust from the impact clears to reveal All Might.
All Might(flexing): I AM HERE! TO TEST YOU!!!
Superboy(getting ready): Bring it! I want to actually push myself to get better!
All Might(thinking to himself): That means he was able to restrain everyone without actually pushing himself! No one should be that powerful, unless…
All Might(eyes widen when he jumps to the wrong conclusion): Could he really be working for All for One? Impossible!
All Might(getting into a fighting stance): I’ll just have to ask him about his new powers later.
All Might then jumps towards Superboy, who swiftly moves aside letting the force of All Might’s punch pass him and nearly blow the captured pros away.
Superboy(worried): Better be careful, or we could hurt someone.
All Might(addressing him): Just focus on the now, treat me like you would a villain!
Superboy(hesitant): If you say so.
Superboy flies in and grabs All Might by face, pushing into the ground as he flies forward, using All Might’s head to create a trench in the road of the fake city. All Might lands a solid blow to Superboy’s stomach, causing his hold to loosen, allowing All Might to reverse their positions and grab Superboy by his head.
He then forces Superboy into the ground, a hand holding his face over one of his eyes, applying more force over time. While he is attempting to hold the Teen of Steel down, he realizes the teen’s visible eye start glowing, and attempts to point his head away from him, thinking it to be heat vision. Instead, a nearby lamp post is telekinetically pulled out of its place and hits him in the back of the head, causing him to lose his hold on the teen.
Superboy recovers from the hold, and they both charge at each other and begin hitting each other with enough force to shatter the windows around with every punch.
All Might(thinking): How could he get this much power from One for All?
All Might(pushing Superboy back, and preparing his strongest attack): I have to learn what he figured out about the quirk, there might even be a way to prolong my time before he’ll be forced to face All for One!
All Might: Prepare yourself, Young Midoriya!
All Might(throwing punch): UNITED STATES OF SM-
However as soon the punch is thrown, it is stopped cold as the teen catches it in his hand and the resulting wind blows the teen’s cape back and causes nearby cars around them to go flying. But the teen himself is unbothered, without so much as a sign that he is struggling to hold back the punch, shocking everyone watching.
Superboy uses this moment of shock to telekinetically push his mentor back, but before they can continue their battle…A bolt of lightning strikes the ground between them, kicking up both dust and smoke, from which an unknown voice calls out.
???: You truly are their son, to be able to stand against this…mockery of a warrior.
The smoke clears to reveal a tan man in black armored suit, with a black cape, and golden bracer, boots and belt. What catches the eye most about this mystery man is the lightning bolt emblem on his chest, glowing with power.
All Might(standing back up): I don’t know who you are, but this doesn’t concern you!
???(turning to face him): When it comes to properly testing Earth’s future champion, it does.
???(turning back to Izuku): Thus Black Adam, Earth’s Mightiest Mortal, has come to properly test the “Son of Superman”!
All Might(preparing a punch): As if I’d allow it!
All Might then launches himself at this “Black Adam” and aims his punch right at his head. Only for the punch to stop dead with a crack, and the resulting winds merely pushing the man’s cape and attached hood back, without a single scratch on his face.
All Might recoils from the pain in his hand as he realizes that he broke it himself when he threw the punch.
Black Adam(scoffs): Is this truly the best you so called “heroes” can muster?
Black Adam(raising his own fist): Pathetic.
He then throws his own punch, and despite All Might’s attempt to block it, he is sent flying backwards, carving out a mile-long trench, surprising everyone.
Bakugo(having just woken up and seeing his idol be beaten back with ONE hit): Impossible…
Superboy(flying towards his mentor with worry): ALL MIGHT!!!
As he flies towards his downed mentor, a glowing ankh appears before the downed hero, and in a flash of light he disappears, only to reappear in the observation room with everyone else, along with the other pros testing Superboy.
Mirku(after recovering from his he teleport): What was that? Is this a villain attack?!?!
???: Calm yourselves, “heroes”!
With another flash of light, a man in a blue costume with a golden belt and golden gloves boots and cape appear before them, but catches the attention of many is the golden helmet he wears, this is the Silver Age hero, Dr Fate!
Nezu(smiling): Nelson, my old friend! What brings you here?
Dr Fate(sighing): I’m here to help ensure that Adam doesn’t hurt anyone in his “assessment”.
Mt Lady(eyes widening in realization): Wait, that’s THE Black Adam?!?!
Hawks(recovering, and stopping in the middle of checking an unconscious Eraserhead): Who?
Mt Lady(turning to him): He was the original Anti-Hero from the country of Khandaq. His power has been compared to gods, he’s essentially the original Superman!
Mt Lady(pointing at Fate): He worked alongside Dr Fate and the Justice Society!
All Might(forcing himself up with a fit of coughs): I have to get back out there!
Dr Fate(making glyphs to keep him in place): YOU will do no more Toshinori Yagi!
Toshinori(shocked): How?
Dr Fate(looking him dead in the eyes): You have pushed yourself past your limit, any more and you may die, especially against Adam.
Dr Fate(watching smoke start to come off of All Might): And now one of your greatest secrets is coming to light as a result.
Dr Fate(turning to all the students): Behold students, the consequences of pushing your quirk factors TOO FAR!
As the smoke clears, the students are revealed to All Might’s true form, and they start murmuring amongst themselves.
Ochaco(worried): What about Izu-kun?! Someone needs to help him!
Dr Fate(turning to her and a worried Eri): I am sorry young Ochaco, but for the events that are about to occur…
Dr Fate(as Superboy and Black Adam are shown staring each other down): No mere mortal can hope to interfere…
Nezu(over the intercoms): Midoriya, your objective has changed!
Nezu: You must now prove your worth to Black Adam, Earth’s Mightiest Mortal!
Nezu: Let this duel of the gods…
Nezu: BEGIN!!!
(Cue “Strongest Alive” by Brandon Yates)
Out of the shadows they rise!
As soon as the signal is given, the two demigods race at each other and land devastating right hooks that result in the building around them being reduced to rubble after being knocked over! They push through and begin engaging each other in a clash of both speed and strength, both only appearing as blurs of black and gold, and red and blue respectively.
Forces of Darkness Consuming our Lives!
Mt Lady(excited): HELL YEAH!!! SHOW HIM WHAT YOU GOT SUPERBOY!!!
Eri(cheering for her father): GO PAPA!!!
Ochaco: Be careful Izuku…
Superboy(thinking to himself): I can actually feel my muscles aching! THIS IS INCREDIBLE!!!
With all the faith placed in me by the heroes of the past!
The teen breaks their high speed battle by dodging a super sonic punch, and grabbing his opponent by their cape and swinging them into the construction site. As Black Adam gets back up, he is immediately smacked across the face by a steel beam. Izuku then swings the beam in his hands as if it were a staff, with the grace his mother taught him, landing multiple hits.
I find the strength to carve my own path!
Kendo(noticing his proficiency): Those hits, he’s not swinging wildly, he actually knows how to use a staff!
Eri(speaking up): Grandma Inko taught him how.
As the nearby students who heard this are left stunned, the rest turn their attention back to the monitors, just in time to see the steel beam break upon Adam’s face. Adam recovers quickly, and unleash a magical bolt of lightning at Izuku, knocking him through several buildings with a slight sting.
I~! Fight~! To be the Strongest Alive~!
Superboy(thinking): I actually felt that! That means this guy’s lightning is magic based!
Superboy(dodging another bolt): I have to make sure they don’t hit me.
I~! (won't ever give up the) Fight~! (I'm always gonna strive) To be the strongest alive~!
However, as Superboy begins dodging the bolts of lightning being shot at him, he makes a quick discovery.
Superboy: He’s keeping me at bay! I can’t get close enough to land a hit!
Superboy(as his eyes start glowing): Well I have my own ranged options to!
Izuku fires a beam of heat vision which is countered by Adam using his lightning. However, while the two struggle to overpower the other, Adam doesn’t notice the two buildings behind him being lifted up and thrown at him from either side until it’s too late.
Doesn't matter time or place, Or if hope has been erased, You will see this smile on my face!
The buildings collide on either side of Adam, only for him to reduce them to dust in a burst of lightning, before tackling Izuku out of the air, and through several buildings, causing the final building to collapse on top of them both.
If you find you're losing faith, Or you feel you've lost your way!
Adam is suddenly sent flying from the rubble, with Izuku quickly flying after him to land a punch that could easily annihilate an entire mountain.
Just rely on me to save the day!
The entire school felt the force of Izuku’s punch connecting with its target and are left stunned by it. Especially when he follows up with a devastating spike to the ground that feels like an earthquake!
If you're looking for someone to save you? I'm here now, it's all alright!
Toshinori is left speechless, as not he could have ever hoped to casually match that level of power. Even in his prime he would have to push himself to keep pace with the two!
Dr Fate(speaking to him via telepathy): Calm yourself Yagi, you did your best as the pillar of peace.
Toshinori(turning to him): How?!
Dr Fate: There are other powers much stronger than HIS. Rest assured, the boy DOES NOT work for him, he’s fate is utterly binding.
Dr Fate(turning back to the fight as Izuku and Adam begin another round of speed blitzes): Like your predecessor before you, he achieved this strength by finding something special to protect.
If you're searching for some kind of breakthrough
Toshinori realizes just what the Silver Age hero meant and looks towards Ochaco and the little girl in her arms.
Dr Fate(informing him): He’d move planets to give them the happiness they deserve.
I promise to be that light!
From inside of One for All, the vestige of Nana Shimura is cheering her grandson on.
Nana: YEAH!!! TAKE HIM DOWN KID!!!
Daigoro(sweat dropping): You know he can’t hear you, right?
Nana(turning to him annoyed): I’M A COPY OF THE ORIGINAL DEAD NANA SHIMURA, JUST LET ME CHEER ON MY GRANDSON GODDAMNIT!!!
Out of the shadows they rise! Forces of evil aim for our demise! I'm digging deep to that power I hold inside!
Black Adam(charging his lightning into his fist): My power equals yours!
Superboy(preparing his next punch): NO ONE’S DOES!!!
The charge at other, and when their punches connect, a shockwave is produced that topples the buildings around them, kicking up dust. Eventually, a figure is sent flying from the dust.
I'm the strongest alive!
The figure is revealed to be Adam, as Izuku takes off after him to deliver a series of punches, each pushing his opponent further and further back!
Doesn't matter time or place, Or if hope has been erased, You will see this smile on my face!
Superboy(with each punch thrown): With every step, an earthquake! With every breath…
Superboy(delivering a double handed spike into the ground): I COULD CREATE A HURRICANE!!!
If you find you're losing faith, Or you feel you've lost your way, Just rely on me to save the day!
Black Adam takes a moment to recover from the final hit, and turns to Teen hero.
Black Adam: Why?
Superboy(stopping his advance, confused): Why what?
If you're looking for someone to save you~
Black Adam(elaborating): Why do you protect them?
The question confuses all who heard it, until Adam continues.
Black Adam: If we wield power comparable to gods, does that not make us gods ourselves?
Black Adam: Yet instead of ruling over them as such, you restrain yourself to their level, why?
I'm here now, it's all alright~
Black Adam: You’ve seen how quick they are to resort to violence, yet you still wish to be their champion?
If you're searching for some kind of breakthrough~
Those listening begin wondering much the same. Why would some with such power choose to limit themselves instead of forcing their rule over any who stand in their way? Izuku then gives his answer.
Superboy(thinking about Bakugo and his old posse): Because I know they can be better. I witnessed the flaws in today’s society firsthand. I know that I could easily burn this world down for all the pain it caused me.
Superboy(thinking about Ochaco and Eri): But I don’t, because I’ve also seen the kindness within it. It’s a small spark, but it burns with a comforting warmth, THAT is what I’m protecting. They can be better, they just need someone to show them.
I promise to be that light!
Superboy(looking Adam in the eyes): Being “good” will always be hard, but “bad” is just too easy. I hope that one day, we can all live in a world where we realize that we’re all connected by the future.
Superboy(looking up at the sky): We all share the same tomorrow.
Everyone listening is left stunned, especially Bakugo, and some are motivated by his honest answer. Toshinori realizes just how much his successor reminds him of his master. Nezu smiles at Izuku’s final statement, glad that he shares his father’s view of the world, and Fate is glad that he has overcome the first of many obstacles in his path to become Earth’s Champion.
Black Adam(impressed): Very well, you have passed my test.
Black Adam(turning around): But before I take my leave, tell me…
Black Adam(looking over his shoulder): What is the name of the son of Kal-El? Who is the son of the “Star Child”?
Izuku is left stunned that he knew about his father’s birth name and meaning behind it. But he soon grins as he remembers the name his father gave to reflect his heritage.
Superboy(honestly): I am Jon-El, the “Hopeful Child”!
If you’re looking for someone to save you~
Black Adam(smirking): Truly, a fitting name for a child of the “House of Hope”.
Nezu(as Black Adam takes off before the pros could chase after him): Izuku Midoriya, it pleases me to announce that you have passed your exam with flying colors!
Eraserhead(regaining consciousness, confused): What’d I miss?
Mt Lady(in the background): THAT WAS AWESOME!!!
Ochaco(running out to her boyfriend, with their daughter still in her arms): IZU-KUN!!!
Dr Fate(to Toshinori, voiceover): Your time as a symbol will soon come to an end that is true, but you’ll live and be proud of the new Golden Age he’ll help bring to pass. Do not doubt yourself young man, for you have made the right choice, just ask his grandmother, Chiyo Shuzenji.
Izuku hugs them both Ochaco and Eri with a wide smile on his face as everything starts fading to black until the golden “S” on Izuku’s cape is all that is seen.
I’m here now, IT’S ALL ALRIGHT!

Mimic Chapter 13

Internships are here, deciding what hero can help further you as a hero maybe someone from beyond your lifetime.
Words- 5245
Reader x MHA (Platonic)
Warnings: Internships, fighting, fluff
With the decision of hero names made you were given a list of heroes that had sent out offers for internships,
“Your internships start in a week. For this all-important decision, I’ll be handing out personalized lists to those who were drafted. You may choose from among those who scouted you. For those who have not drafted, the list, I passed out contains forty agencies from all over the country willing to accept interns. You will choose one from that list. Each has a different specialty and region. Give your choice some real thought.” Mr. Aizawa says and you begin looking through the listen of Agency.
“Submit your choices by this coming weekend.” Mr. Aizawa adds and you turn as Mina comes by your desk holding the sheet those not drafted got as you turn through the large packet with multiple agencies.
“So what agencies drafted you?” Mina asks and you hand her the list and she reads through the long list. “You practically got every top hero asking for you. I told you that you had this in the bag!” She says slapping the packet against your arm. She wasn’t wrong top heroes asked for you, Best Jeanist, Edgeshot, Kamui Woods, Mt. Lady, and the one name that you were nervous to see, Endeavor. Just the way he questioned your quirk and when he asked if you could copy All Might’s quirk. It just didn’t sit right with you.
“So what agency are you going to go with?” She asks and you shrugged your shoulder.
“I really don’t have any idea, they all have different ways they can improve individual aspects of my quirk but I guess what I’m looking for is someone that can help me understand my quirk as a whole.” You flip through the packet scrolling through the names when you stumble onto one right at the bottom of the list. ‘Gran Torino’.
“Now that is a name I haven’t heard in a while.” A voice says and you jump in your seat whipping your head to see your grandmother Nana Shimura just chilling on your teacher's desk. How the hell was she here. She smiles waving you off, “It’s alright they can’t see me, but Gran Torino might be the person you’re looking for.”
A hand waving in front of your face makes you snap your gaze back to Mina who is looking at you confused, “You alright Y/n you kinda just zoned out for a second?” Shaking the dazed look off your face,
“Uh yeah just thinking about what agency to go with.” You say and the rest of the school day seems to just fly by. After school, you all begin to pack your bag if Nana said that this Gran Torino guy is the person I’m looking for then maybe it’s for the best.
“I-i-i am here in a peculiar pose!!” All Might slides into view as Midoriya opens the door.
“W-what is it? Why so jumpy?” Midoriya asks and you sling your bag over your shoulder moving closer to the door,
“This way, kid.” All Might says while giving brief waves to your classmates.
“Hey, All Might I have a question to ask you real quick if you don’t mind?” You say following after the two and All Might laughs loudly though there seems to be some shakiness behind it.
“Of course Young L/n, come along!” Following alongside Midoriya side by side, All Might speaks again, “Someone has drafted you!” Midoriya is shocked to hear this someone drafted him even though he had no previous ones.
“Huh?! Seriously?!” Midoriya asks all excited and All Might seems to be sweating slightly at the who sent an offer.
“His name is Gran Torino! He was once an instructor at U.A. just for one year…and he was my homeroom teacher.” All Might says and you can’t help but let out a sudden laugh. The sheer coincidence that he got scouted by the same person you were contemplating going to.
“This is so crazy cause I was going to ask you All Might if you knew Gran Torino, I was thinking about doing my internship there!” You say and Midoriya smiles while the grin on All Might’s face drops and he looks horrified.
“I’m sure there are more suitable options for you Young L/n, you got many good offers from some top heroes even.” All Might says frantically trying to let the idea you have to die quickly.
“What can be so wrong with this guy All Might if he scouted out both Midoriya and me?” You say and All Might sulks knowing he wasn’t going to be able to stop you.
“He knows all about the situation with One For All. That may be the reason he’s reached out to you Young Midoriya, you however Young L/n I’m not sure. Gran Torino is a good friend from the last generation but he retired so long ago that I forgot about him…” All Might says before turning his back to you frantically muttering to himself,
“Did he draft the two of you because he didn’t think my guidance was enough But for him to make this scouting pick using his old name from way back when…it’s scary. So scary,” Jesus All Might was literally shaking in his boots! “Anyhow training the two of you is fundamentally my duty but he went to all this trouble, so I guess I can let him take a cr-cr-crack at it…” The Number One Hero looked terrified thinking about Gran Torino. It was settled, you and Midoriya would be having your internships with Gran Torino.
The next two days passed quickly and the day to leave for internships was happening. You all were at the station briefcases in hand as Aizawa spoke to you all,
“You’ve got your costumes, right? Wearing them in public is strictly prohibited, but don’t drop them.”
“Yeahhhhh!” Mina cheers, “Don’t slur your ‘yeah’ Ashido. All of you, be on your best behavior! Now go.” Aizawa says dismissing all of you.
“I’m gonna miss youuuuu.” Mina wraps her arms around you. You smile hugging the girl back,
“It’s only a week-long internship, Mina.” You try to make her feel better and she pouts more, “I’ll be sure to text you every day.” Her spirits seemed lifted as she hugs you tighter before you both part ways. Heading over to Midoriya as you see Iida and Uraraka depart as well.
“You ready?” You ask and he nods fixing the strap of his bag. Boarding the bullet train you arrived at the address where Gran Torino is supposed to be at.
“A hero who scares the pants off All Might. I’ve never heard of him, but he’s gotta be one awesome guy!” Midoriya says as you walk up the street to where you guys were supposed to be staying. The building was run down the sign above saying ‘Welcome’ was tilted and about to fall. You both look at each other unsure if you should go inside. Did you guys get the right address? Walking up the steps and opening the door, it creaks open as you both step inside.
“Hello, we’ve come from U.A. High School… I’m Izuku Midoriya and I’m with Y/n L/n…” Midoriya calls out, the room was dark as you step inside you felt your foot touch something liquid. Looking down at your shoe you see some red liquid on it. Both you and Midoriya look further in and your blood runs cold seeing some guy on the floor dead on the ground blood pooling around him.
“AHHHH HE’S DEAD!” “I STEPPED IN BLOOD!” Both of your screams fill the room and to make it worst the apparently dead man wasn’t dead as his head pops up scaring the two of you even more.
“I’m Alive!” Gran Torino brings himself to stand holding a cane in one hand, “To slip and fall while carrying ketchup covered sausage links… How clumsy of me! Who are you two?” The two of you look at each other and Midoriya introduces himself.
“I’m Izuku Midoriya and this is Y/n L/n. We’ve come from U.A.” Gran Torino frowns before, “What? Who are you?” He was All Might’s teacher so he had to be old but not lucid old.
“I’d like to each lunch.” The old hero says plopping back into the ketchup puddle and you two look at each other.
“Toshinori!” Gran Torino points at Midoriya and he shakes his head, “That’s not my name!”
Placing his suitcase down Gran Torino shuffles over opening it up and going through Midoriya’s things.
“E-excuse me. I have to make a phone call real quick,” Midoriya looks over at you while pulling out his phone, “I’m gonna let All Might know this guy wasn’t the right choice for our internships just watch him.” You nod and Midoriya heads towards the door,
“Fire off an attack. Show me your One For All!” Gran Torino says and you both turn to look at him, maybe he wasn’t lucid anymore, “I’d like to know to what degree you can control it.” He seemed so serious all of a sudden not a stumbling old man as well he glances at you before looking back at his suitcase, “You too girl, If I wasn’t there when she passed I would have thought you were Nana Shimura. Except for the white hair.” You and Midoriya looked at each other, so he knew that Midoriya possessed One For All and was able to know you’re relations to your grandmother in an instant.
“Who are you again?!” Gran Torino says lucid once again and the two of you sigh,
“I need to get this power under control as soon as possible…because All Might…he doesn’t have much time left. We both don’t have time to mess around with you sir.” Midoriya says and he turns to leave the room as you look back and forth at Midoriya leaving and Gran Torino watching him. With the sudden speed that has your hair blowing back, he jumps from the ceiling to the ground back to the ceiling right above the doorway where Midoriya is at.
“Then I’ll tell you once more. Come at me, you neophyte.” He glares down at Midoriya as he is stunned. “The way used it at the sports festival that justice-obsessed fool All Might sure is a novice when it comes to teaching. And you,” Gran Torino looks over at you, “You use others' quirks like they’re not yours.” You go to open your mouth, but they weren’t your quirks, “I don’t wanna hear it! Make each use of your quirk meaningful don’t just have it haphazardly use it. Shape it to work with you. All Might can’t wait over the two of you properly, so that means I gotta do it. So put on your costume.”
The two of had changed out of your school uniforms to your hero costumes, during the time for the sports festival you had sent out a request for some improvements for your hero costume, having the entire suit be made of a fire-resistant material as well as improving the regulation between switching temperatures from different quirks. The elbow-length fingerless gloves included a thick material to protect your hands from either high levels of heat or cold. The dark grey color of the suit kept you out of the spotlight with flashy colors. Clasping the utility belt and bags around your mid-thigh you start lacing up the boots. They were black in color with laces going up and two large straps along the top, you also added the feature of making them fitted with spikes along the bottom when using Todoroki’s ice and not slipping on it. You see Midoriya come out changed as well and his costume seemed to be updated as well.
“Is this really okay though? To be honest, I’m still not great with this power. Maybe a wide-open space would be better? Because if I get careless and accidentally use 100 percent…Gran Torino, you’ll be completely..” Midoriya says trying to reason with him neither of your untamed quirks was really suited for indoors at the moment.
“You sure talk a lot..” Gran Torino says and he disappears in front of the two of you. “I’m getting impatient.” He appears above the two of you slamming down onto Midoriya before bouncing off him and hitting you on the side.
“We’re really fighting?! I thought you just wanted a demonstration!” Midoriya cries out as you both stead yourselves from those attacks. He bounces off the walls before slamming into the microwave destroying it.
“Seems you couldn’t perceive my true power before,” Gran Torino says, “To choose this little wet blanket as the ninth successor? All Might’s a novice among novices.” He quickly disappears from both of your views and you see him heading towards Midoriya,
“Midoriya watch out!” You’re too late to warn him as Gran Torino slams into Midoriya’s back a large crack coming from him causing him to slam into you as you both fall to the floor. Quickly bringing yourselves to your feet Gran Torino continues bouncing around just a blur around the room as you try to follow his movements. He strikes hitting you on the back before bouncing around the room again. What the hell was this guy’s quirk?! Keeping back to back with Midoriya as you both try to figure out the next move he just hit you in the back so that means he’s…going for Midoriya. Gran Torino appears in front heading towards you lifting your arm to counter his attack when he disappears in front of you before you feel an arm grab your own and you flip over towards his couch. You yelp as you crash into the couch flipping over it and it topples over as well.
“L/n!” Midoriya yells out as you groan in pain, Midoriya drops onto the ground trying to surprise Gran Torino his arm crackling with One For All.
“Trying to analyze and predict?” Gran Torino says, Midoriya throws a punch at him but he quickly dodges restraining his arm and leg, the air pressure from the punch hitting the ceiling.
“So stiff and your awareness is a mess. So you end up like this.” Gran Torino gets up grabbing his cane as Midoriya sits up as you bring yourself from behind the pushed-over couch.
“But I was sure I had you..!” Midoriya says and Gran Torino frowns,
“No, because I saw the way you fought in the cavalry battle and the tournament I was sure you’d already figured it out based on that. The respect you have for All Might, that sense of responsibility they’re shackles holding you back. ‘I have to get stronger quickly,’ you say. Its true time is not one your side-nor on your enemies’. And they won’t wait for you to get stronger. You’re thinking of One For All as something unique.” Midoriya stands up looking at your new mentor,
“So what should I do?”
“You gotta find that answer for yourself. And you,” He turns from Midoriya to you pointing his cane, “I saw you as well during the festival, the determination you have to prove to others is blinding you from doing the most basic thing. I expected to see you use your quirk and you failed in that first step.” But you couldn’t use a new quirk if you haven’t seen it in a 24-hour time frame. “I’m heading out to buy some grub. Clean up the place for me, why don’t you” Gran Torino leaves his home leaving you two by yourselves.
You were sitting on the couch after fixing it looking at your hands while Midoriya stood in the kitchen area. How the hell could you use your quirk if you haven’t seen anyone use theirs in the past 24 hours. “How do we know this guy is really going to help us improve our quirks and not just bullshitting us.” You call out to Midoriya who seemed to be in deep focus. He was just staring at the destroyed microwave muttering to himself.
“That’s it!” Midoriya yells making you jump in your seat as he rushes over tumbling over the back of the couch almost trampling you in the process as he grabbed his notebook. “Right quirks are just extensions of our bodies! I have to use One For All more evenly!” He says while writing in his notebook while you looked at him confused.
“What are you talking about Midoriya?” He stops writing for a second turning to you,
“If I use One For All more evenly I’ll have less of a chance of hurting myself instead of focusing on one part of my body! This includes you as well L/n! We don’t fully understand your inclusion in One For All either but maybe their restriction you think you have never even existed in the first place. We just thought it was true cause we never really focused on using your quirk to its full potential so maybe you can do so much more than we imagined!” Midoriya rambles off flipping through his notebook before he stops on a section writing more in it, looking at it was a section dedicated to you and your quirk. You were shocked that he had this much information on you with thoughts and ideas involving your quirk. The familiar words from Nana ring in your head with what Midoriya is saying.
‘These ‘boundaries’ you think are there is the mental block you’ve put up to stop yourself from reaching your true potential.’
Midroiya flips through his notebook while explaining to you, “It all makes sense. We were just blindly accepting it and learning by rote, but quirks work differently with each generation, and specifically this quirk, it’s constantly changing and growing stronger it’s almost as if-”
“Like it’s alive…” You say and the two of you look at each other. You both had first-hand experience of how this quirk affected the two of you. The power growing over the years you have more visits than Midoriya but the way the past users connect to you two through this quirk. You two were connected in many ways with this quirk.
Unbeknownst to the two of you as you kept talking Gran Torino is listening right outside the door. “The kid knows how to think. His moves at the sports festival told me that much at least. The girl is understanding more what her place is with her quirk and the first steps to understanding it.” Maybe you did pick good ones after all. Toshinori…All Might.
Gran Torino returned with food before immediately crashing into his bed his snores fill the room as the two of you were still awake.
“Is he fully asleep?” You whisper to Midoriya and you both look at the snoring hero before you head towards the front door, it creaked open and Midoriya peaked his head out before sneaking out you following behind him.
“So what’s the plan to help you figure out One For All?” You ask as the two of you walk down the street.
“For Kacchan and the others, quirks are natural as breathing. But I still think of mine in terms of ‘using’ or ‘not using’. If I could manage using 5 percent of my power as naturally as I do my own breath I might be able to handle different moves.” Midoriya says before stopping and looking down an alleyway, “It’s like Mr. Aizawa and Kirishima said. Mastery of a quirk leads to endless possibilities! Basically, I have to get used to my quirk. Even 5 percent should be enough for this gap… this’ll be cool if I can manage it.” You smile watching him mumble to himself as he points from both sides of the alley wall. Plopping down against one of the walls he turns seeing you get yourself comfortable.
“Go ahead, I’m here to make sure you don’t break your bones and I don’t have to drag you back inside. Might try to figure out my own quirk as well.” You say waving him off and he smiles turning back to face the wall. You look down at your hands, you had changed out of your hero costume to some sweats and a t-shirt. The cool breeze felt nice on your skin the bandages from the festival were long off now and there was some scarring on your left arm. It traveled from your palm up to your arm with the healing works of Recovery Girl they look faded but you could still see them.
Holding your palm out you stare at it and deeply breathe in and out, just focus, think small, focus on a small point on your hand and flame. You open your palm and nothing comes out. Come on quirk there is no boundary I’m not thinking about boundaries I’m thinking about a small flame. Your palm remains cold and empty and you hear a large smack on the wall across from you. Midoriya slams into the wall before falling into a pile of trash bags. That definitely hurt. He mutters more to himself rolling out of the pile as he gets back up.
Bringing your attention back to your hand you stare at it, thinking how things come on burn just a small flame, please! Huffing in frustration you lean back looking up at the sky, come on quirk please work with me. Nana, weren’t you suppose to help me?
“Come on you need to have a more positive attitude if you want your quirk to work!” Nana says and you turn to her voice she is sitting on one of the trashcans.
“I’m sure in a serious situation I can’t be in a positive mood to get my quirk to work.” You mutter and you hear movement before something flicks you in the forehead.
“Hey what was that for!” You say to the spirit rubbing the sore spot on your forehead, guess that even though she isn’t real doesn’t mean she can’t touch you.
“You aren’t going to get anywhere with that idea in your head. Look at him.” Nana says pointing her finger at Midoriya who is rubbing the back of his head looking at the alley walls before going at it again. “Even though he’s falling down and not succeeding, Midoriya is trying despite having no control over his quirk.” You look away from the boy back down at your hand. At least he had an idea of how to use his quirk. You were giving no clue or idea how it works or what it really is.
“And you do have an idea how to use your quirk,” Nana says and you look up at her, “I’m a part of you, I can hear your thoughts.” She taps her finger against her head.
“Fine then what do I do if I have an idea how this all works.” You say throwing your arms in the air. Nana smirks going back to sitting down on the trashcan.
“Just look.” You tilt your head confused and she points down at your hand, looking back down your eyes widen looking at your hand. The singular flame dances along with your hand. Moving your hand it travels around your hand stopping on your palm when you stop.
“You stopped thinking about it as a quirk that needs your constant control over it. One For All should be as simple as breathing, it’s constantly flowing through you. It shouldn’t be forced upon.” Nana says as you watch the flame on your hand grow larger and dim without you needing to force it. It felt different this time despite the heat coming off the flame you didn’t feel a burn or pain from it. One For All is constantly changing and growing it evolves with each generation, it was alive.
“Thank you, Nana…” You look up to thank her but the alley is empty once again leaving just the two of you.
Midoriya lets out a sigh and stretches his bones cracking, it was definitely early in the morning, he should probably head inside and get a couple hours of sleep.
“Hey L/n we should head inside-” He turns to face you but stops, you were fast asleep slumped over against the wall. He is silent, should he wake you up? No that would be rude and he was the one that brought you along it seems only fair he lets you sleep, but definitely not in this alleyway.
He comes over keeping quiet before kneeling down he was glad you were asleep so you couldn’t see his bright red face. This was really the closest he’s ever been with a girl. Bringing an arm underneath your knees and behind your back, he lifts you up to be careful not to wake you up. He freezes when you shift slightly but lets out a sigh when you don’t wake up. Heading to the front door he has to shift you in his hold to open getting inside he silently walks inside the door clicking close behind him. Bringing you over to the couch he carefully places you down reaching to grab a blanket hanging off the end of the couch draping it over you. He watches as you grumble in your sleep before curling deeper into the blanket fast asleep.
“Night L/n…”
Blinking your eyes open you freeze seeing your location is different. You remember being outside training your quirk but then you couldn’t remember the rest. Pushing yourself to sit up from laying down on the couch pushing your hair back you look down and see Midoriya laying on the mattress on the floor. Midoriya gave you the couch he probably is going to be all sore and tired from sleeping on the floor.
“Good morning..” Gran Torino says coming down the stairs you give a small greeting rubbing the sleep from your eyes and Midoriya stirs away wiping the sleep from his face but he looked like really tired dark circles under his eyes.
“What’s wrong with you?!” Gran Torino yells at him and Midoriya rubs the back of his neck,
“I was doing some training last night and lost track of time,” Midoriya stands up fixing his bed head which looked really adorable on him. Did you just call Midoriya adorable?! “After figuring out what you said, I decided to put it into practice, Gran Torino…but I’ve got a long way to go.”
“Every real challenge begins that way. That’s just how it is you’d be hardpressed to get that kind of thinking outta All Might. That guy could manage it just fine from the start, so I had to teach him in a totally different way. The only thing he had going for him was his body, in fact.” Gran Torino says and Midoriya gets all excited.
“You’re talking about when All Might was in school!”
“We did nothing but spar until he was ready to puke,” Gran Torino says that explaining why All Might is so scared of this guy, “I couldn’t half-ass his training. He was entrusted to me by a dear departed friend.” Nana Shimura, so Gran Torino knew your grandmother but that means.
“All Might’s predecessor, so they had already passed away at that point?” Midoriya says, she was barely there to train All Might it would definitely explain why he really had little knowledge in trying to explain how your quirk could work. Thinking back to what Gran Torino said when you first met him he thought you were Nana if it weren’t for the hair. Is that what All Might had to deal with every time he saw you a constant reminder of his deceased mentor.
The doorbell chimes pulling you out of your thoughts as Midoriya heads to the door. “Delivery from Amazon.” A voice calls through the door and Midoriya goes to get it. Having the box brought inside you help Midoriya open it surprise to see a microwave.
“A microwave?!” Midoriya says and Gran Torino nods patting the top of it,
“Somehow mine got broken yesterday so I ordered this with next-day delivery!” Both you and Midoriya gave a look to each other, was he being serious or just playing dumb.
After setting up the microwave Gran Torino sits in one of the seats at the table, “Okay, let’s have that frozen taiyaki I bought yesterday. Heat ‘em, up for me!”
“Taiyaki for breakfast?!” Midoriya ask concerned and Gran Torino nodded, “I just like sweet things, is all!” The timer for the microwave goes and Midoriya pulls out the taiyaki placing it in the middle of the table mumbling the whole way through it.
“Why the long face? Just sit down and enjoy some piping hot-” Gran Torino grabs one biting into it and freezes, “COLD!!” “Huh!?”
“No way! I was sure I heated them on defrost mode!” Midoriya says using the tip of his finger on one of them to feel the temperature, you put your back pouting you just wanted breakfast.
“You dummy look! You crammed them on a plate that’s too big!! They can’t spin if the plate’s too big. Only one part gets heated up! You ever use a microwave before?!” Gran Torino yells at Midoriya showing him the inside of the microwave.
“Oh..the type I have doesn’t rotate sorry about that…” Midoriya says before pausing, “Ahh! I got it! Gran Torino!” Midoriya holds up a taiyaki, “This taiyaki…it’s me!!” What the hell was he on about.
“No, it’s not. What’s wrong with you?!” Gran Torino yells at the boy who pales,
“No! I mean…it’s just…I figured it out! Up until now, I was fixated on the idea of ‘using’ my power. Only when I needed it or where I needed it! Just like an on-off switch. So the second or third time I’d use it, my reaction would always be delayed! From the start, I should’ve been throwing all the switches on at once!” The glow of One For All goes around Midoriya as his veins glow pink, “That heat, which was only reaching a single part of me…I’ve gotta picture it spreading around evenly!” Green sparks start to come off Midoriya as he focusing in on his quirk.
“So my whole body’s continuously at my 5 percent limit!”
“So your visualization’s a taiyaki in the microwave? Sure you’re okay with something so boring?” Gran Torino says
“That’s the inspiration I got from All Might!” Midoriya says clenching his fist as One For All works through his entire body.
“Can you even move like that?” Gran Torino says throwing his cane behind him, you slowly get up grabbing the taiyaki plate, you just wanted breakfast, not a morning fight.
“Come on I just wanna eat breakfast!” You whine.
“I’m not sure!” Midoriya responds before both males glare at each other.
“Why don’t we find out?” Gran Torino cracks his knuckles, he glances at you holding the plate of food. “Did you think you were getting out of training?” Raising your arms flames instantly cover your arm surprising the two men. You were able to use your quirk naturally and Midoriya’s theory was right. You never had a time limit.
“A little fire doesn’t scare me.” Gran Torino smirks and you frown, guess no breakfast.

“Come onnnnn! Somebody go first!” Rue drunkenly snickers with her arm draped around Ryuko. We’d rented out the entire karaoke bar for Rumi’s birthday party; it was just me, Rue, Kei, Shinji, Fuyumi, Ryuko, and Yu. Everyone was pretty tipsy already, with the exception of Keigo and Yumi. The birthday girl had decided she wanted to judge a lip sync battle and dance competition, so, naturally, we were all forced to comply. No one wanted to step up and be the first to embarrass themselves.
Keigo suddenly gets up from the bar and struts over toward the stage, leading Rue to gleefully cheer for her best friend. He grabs the remote and begins flipping through songs in the queue, watching them zip by on the screen until, finally, he lands on “Separate Ways (Worlds Apart)” by Journey. He spins on a dime and makes direct eye contact with me, and I roll my eyes. My little sister elbows me in the side, and, soon, everyone is chanting:
“TOYA! TOYA! TOYA!”
“Come on. The song is long, we’ll only do through the first chorus,” Keigo concedes. I give in, shaking my head as I hop up from the barstool and walk toward Keigo, who hands me a fake microphone as he grabs another one.
“This is stupid,” I mutter, but Kei just beams at me.
“Why? Don’t think you can keep up? Won’t put on a show for Rumi?” He pouts mockingly, and I snort.
“In your dreams, Featherhead,” I wink at him as the stage lights dim, and Fuyumi changes them to red and blue colors as we stand back to back, and I take a deep breath. We’re both just completely winging this, I guess. As soon as the solo synth cords begin to play, Keigo struts around to face me, almost patronizingly dragging his hand down the side of my face before he turns his back to me and starts grinding on me as the guitar and drums kick in. I blink for a second before I become absorbed in the bit and the music, swaying my hips to match his, and I hear Rue wolf-whistling to my chagrin. The repetitive synth changes, and I dramatically push away from him, deciding to go with the theme of the song. We circle each other, eyes locked in fake death stares, and I try not to smile at how good Kei’s acting is. He got record high scores in the Presentation course, and it shows.
“Wooo! Don’t stop the burlesque show!” Rue cackles, and I bite back a laugh, focusing on Keigo as we stop circling. He angrily lip syncs the first two lines like a scorned lover, pointing accusingly at me. I roll my eyes, acting like I couldn’t care less before I mouth the next two lines, taking deliberate steps closer to him.
“Booo! Toya’s holding back! He’s not dancing for real!” My little sister heckles, and Keigo begins stalking forward to meet me in the middle of the stage. The distraction makes us both waver, and we hear the music playing:
“Feeling that it’s gone could change your mind. If we can’t go on to survive the tide, love divides!”
In a snap, I snatch Keigo’s hand, putting the other one around his waist as I pull him towards me, and, as the chorus begins, we start to tango down the stage. I spin him and pull him back in before he can react, and his eyes go wide as I smile deviously. Once the words “separate ways” echo through the speakers, I release his hands, and we both drop them to our sides as we still dance with only mere millimeters between each other. I lean back as I walk backward while he walks toward me, leaning forward ever so slightly, and the tension is tangible. After a few beats, we switch, and I’m leaning closer to him as he leans back. Before he can straighten up again, I grab him and sweep him off his feet, holding him up by his waist and spinning him around and around before bringing him back down as the song fades out. We’re both breathing hard as I press my forehead to his, and he stares up at me with a triumphant smirk. Rumi, Ryuko, Shinji, and Fuyumi cheer.
“C’mon, Yu! We can beat that,” Shinji slurs, grabbing his girlfriend’s hand and pulling her up to the stage.
“In your dreams, Splinterface,” I taunt, shooting a look at Shinji before Keigo and I return to our seats.

Asleep In The Keep: A DP x BNHA fic
Summary: Kamui Woods and Mt. Lady find a member from the mysterious vigilante group, Phantom.
Word count: 5817
Chapter 19: Where's Your Head at?!
19/?
It had been a slow night during patrols, which was surprising since during the last few weeks, crime rates had gone up. Stain: The Hero Killer sparked something in society that made people lash out towards the heroes. Most of those affected had been angsty teens who felt hurt or scorned by their peers, or at least that's what Kamui Woods’ heard. They just needed a steady hand to guide them back to the right path. The real threat however wasn’t the ones who made themselves known, but the ones who worked in the quiet behind every corner or alley. It was important to stay diligent and keep an unclouded mind…
…Which was something his partner was having a hard time with.
“Seriously, that kid was really creepy.” Mt. Lady, while being an exceptional hero with a powerful quirk, she had a habit of looking at the smaller things. This didn’t impact her hero duties for when push came to shove, she shushed harder. Kamui Woods admires that about her. She continued again, “Did you see the way he looked at me?” She made exaggerated motions while pointing to her eyes, “it was like he was trying to freak me out on purpose. It gave me the chills” she shivered.
Despite her flaws, Kamui Woods really enjoyed his time with her, and even considered her a friend (even if she never agrees to hang out with him off the clock).
“He was probably just shocked to see a hero at this time of night.” Kamui Woods couldn’t lie and say he didn’t feel something from the boy. It felt as if there was no soul behind the kid’s eyes and they wanted his to reflect them. He thought for a moment and said, “It could’ve had something to do with his quirk?” Quirks that affected people’s emotions weren’t unheard of, but they were still few and far between. Kamui Woods himself had only met two people who had such a quirk. He continued, “The kid seemed polite. He even bowed as we walked past.” Despite the interaction being creepy, the kid was still respectful.
“I guess…” she shrugged, “but when he walked past, his shoulder brushed against me. It was cold. It was like all the warmth from my arm was sucked out. I actually thought he was about to attack me.” This took Kamui Woods by surprise.
The night, while not the warmest, sat at a comfortable 15°C, but when the boy passed by, a bitter chill swept into Kamui Woods bones. He thought it was just the breeze. And the boy, in spite of being off-putting, didn’t give off any malicious intent. He still believed Mt. Lady. She, despite being a newer hero, had a good head on her shoulders and had the instincts needed for the job, even if she could act immature at times. Kamui Woods would keep an eye out for the boy from now on.
They continued like this, neither of them saying anything except for a few short conversations. The patrol remained slow and eventually they were close to where they started again. The Hero Commission had assigned many of the local heroes of Musutafu different sections of the city. Supposedly, they believed the vigilante group who calls themselves “Phantom” had been seen around here but had not made any contact with any heroes in the area. Until that changes, heroes all over Musutafu were confined to one patrol route. Kamui Woods doubted that would happen. One of the group members would probably catch on to being hunted then they would move to a different city, like they did in Hosu.
As they were walking past an alley, a bitter chill blew in the air. Both him and Mt. Lady froze, recognizing the sensation. Was it that same boy? They had checked the alley before on their last round. Nothing was out of the usual other than an overwhelming feeling of wrongness. They left quickly after confirming the area was clear. Of course it had to be this alley. He looked over at Mt. Lady behind him, her eyes were wide. She was thinking the same as him. They didn’t dare speak, too afraid of disrupting whatever was happening in the alley or alerting the person inside. There was always a chance nothing was there, but Kamui Woods doubted it. Every muscle in his body was twitching to flee, and he had to fight to not cave-in to the instinct. Mt. Lady was in a similar condition. This was exactly why they had to go in.
Kamui Woods looked over at Mt. Lady and gave her a confident look, but it was hidden under his helmet. Instead, he gave her a firm nod and she nodded back at him. Just being with her was enough to calm him down. With slightly shaky hands, he was able to sign out a hastily thought-up strategy. Most heroes knew sign language since it was important to be able to communicate in situations like this. When what to do was decided, Mt. Lady and him nodded at eachother once more to reassure themselves. Kamui Woods sent out a quick message for reinforcements in the area. Despite his feelings for Mt. Lady, the crammed environment wasn’t the most suited for her quirk. Until then, they had to risk going in, not wanting to chance the criminal getting away.
Slowly, using all their stealth training, they approached the mouth of the alley. Unfortunately, the alley was a dead-end, so they couldn’t go in through the back to corner them. Perhaps this was a blessing in disguise, since that also meant the person (or persons) couldn’t get away either. They had no idea what they were up against. By how intense the aura was, something bad must have happened. The worst case was a murder, which seemed likely since the feeling of death was slowly overwhelming them as they walked deeper into the alley.
They heard faint noises up ahead. They both had to stop breathing to be even able to hear it. It was almost like fizzing? They walked in synchronized movements deeper in, curiosity getting the better of them. A faint green glow illuminated out and there was a faint smell of electricity in the air. Before them they saw a blob on the ground, but what surprised them most was what was above it. After a second, the blob lifted into the air and returned to it’s master, a white haired teen. A phrase repeated into Kamui Woods’ head. It is cold outside.
The teen, no, Phantom , grabbed it out of the air and it molded into his hand. Was that thing a part of him? Was this his quirk? Kamui Woods couldn’t see any of the others around. From what he knew about the group, they liked to work closely together. Was it just him? Before he was able to communicate this to Mt. Lady, she gasped at the display before her.
Phantom snapped his head towards them in an unnatural manner, earning further gasps from both of the heroes. His eyes widened as he stared down the heroes, and the off-putting vibe increased tenfold. Before Phantom could react first, Kamui Woods launched an attack of tree roots from his arm and was able to wrap it around him. Mt. Lady rushed in while he was incapacitated, but something was off. Phantom didn’t seem phased, he wasn’t even struggling. The only thing on his face was shock, and even that was mild. While he still had the opportunity, Kamui Woods grabbed his communicator with his free hand and spoke one phrase without context.
“It is cold outside!” He heard nothing on the other end.
Mt. Lady’s punch connected as soon as the phrase was uttered. Despite being limited in tighter spaces, her hand-to-hand combat made up for this disadvantage, and she was a heavy hitter. The sound of her fist echoed in the alley with a sickening crunch. They both watched in horror as Phantom’s head exploded, bursting his shattered skull into a gooey mess.
Mt. Lady looked at the crime scene in shock for a second, then her face morphed into one of fear and disgust. She looked over at him, pale and trembling after what she had just done. Kamui Woods knew Mt. Lady, she wouldn’t hit hard enough to kill. Seconds slowed down to minutes and Kamui Woods felt himself get sick when he realized his roots were still holding onto the body…
He was about to release his hold, ready to burn off the branches, when he caught sight of the boy's once intact head. The splatters orbited around the boy's neck like a bloody halo (if blood was green and glowing). The body was still twitching.
Slowly, like the attack was going back in time, the goo started to flow back to the body's head. Mt. Lady was still looking at Kamui Woods, so she couldn’t see what was building behind her. His body language must have given it away and she slowly turned around, obviously apprehensive to what she might see. She turned just in time to see the last few drops meld into his head.
The once dead teen looked at them blankly, but there was something hidden underneath. Phantom touched the roots that wrapped around him gently, like he was scared they were going to attack him (which was fair after what just happened to him). He suddenly grabbed hold of a firm branch and started to push his body away. He struggled at first, and Kamui Woods had no idea what he was trying to do. Slowly, the boy’s body was starting to move through the roots. It was like watching slime ooze out between the cracks of a box.
Both Kamui Woods and Mt. Lady were too stunned to do anything, still not yet recovered from the boy’s decapitation. After a few seconds, the boy untangled himself from the branches. He rubbed and patted his torso, as if still surprised that it was intact. Did he not know he could do that?
“What the fuck…” the boy groaned. It appears he didn’t know. His hands shot up to his neck, rubbing under the fabric as if looking for the seam. Something twisted inside Kamui’s gut. The boy felt more than dangerous, he felt wrong.
Kamui Woods shook off his shock and launched his other arm at the boy while recoiling his other roots. They were able to once again latch onto Phantom. Like before, Phantom was able to squirm out of the root's grasps, this time with more ease than prior. While he was preoccupied with that, Mt. Lady rushed towards him with a fist raised, but missed and hit the roots below, causing them to splitter apart, wood chips flying. Phantom jumped back and it seemed as if he was floating. Mt. Lady charged at him again, but he nimbly dodged her every attack.
“Why are you attacking me?” Phantom’s voice was hollow as he spoke and its echo reverberated in Kamui Woods bones. It didn’t sound desperate or like a plea, just filled with a child-like confusion. Mt. Lady, unmoved, didn’t stop her volley of attacks and Kamui Woods followed suit, sending smaller but faster branches to the vigilantes' feet to trip him up. His foot got tangled and Mt. Lady was able to hit his shoulder. It reacted similarly to his head, but he quickly recovered.
“Seriously, like why?” Phantom jumped back, “I haven’t done anything to you guys!” He stood open in front of them as if expecting an answer. He really looked like a kid.
“You’re dangerous!” Mt. Lady shouted as she threw another punch. The teen shrieked but was able to dodge it like the others.
“Is this because of the whole ‘vigilante’ thing?” It sounded like a whine, “I really didn’t think it’s that big of a deal.” He was casually able to dodge both Mt. Lady’s and Kamui Woods attacks. The kid was skilled, that was for sure. He must have had training before, along with his brothers. They have yet to show themselves, but from the stories Kamui Woods heard, they were able to move in sync perfectly. They had to find a way to end this soon before they arrived.
A thought dashed across Kamui Woods’ mind as cold air filled his lungs. The boy… This was the same chill from when the boy passed by them on the street. Could he be one of the brothers? He couldn’t remember what the kid looked like, only black hair and a white streak, but he felt very similar to the Phantom before them now. But was that really the case, where was he? Kamui Woods looked around frantically for any spot that they might have missed, any corner, any object, any unseen shadow... It’s possible that this all could’ve been a trap, that the boy led them here, he heard a similar thing happened with Fat Gum. But that didn’t make sense! The Phantom member didn’t look like he was expecting them, and if it had been a trap wouldn’t there be more of them? Phantom also hadn’t tried attacking them, despite what they’d done. He seemed more confused than malicious. But the boy and the Phantom before them were connected somehow…
Wait, was it only one person? But that didn’t make sense either! Phantom had only been using one quirk and from the reports each Phantom had a different set of skills (with ice one being more active). Nothing was adding up.
The fight was going nowhere. Phantom had yet to tire but the same couldn’t be said for Mt. Lady and him. Mt. Lady’s attacks had gotten slower and Kamui Woods branches were becoming less coordinated. Phantom noticed.
“Since you’re not gonna answer my questions, can I ask something else?” Silence, “So the guy, I understand his quirk and costume, he’s basically Groot, but-” Kamui Woods was offended.
“Like that guy from that American movie?!” He shouted. Before the age of quirks, people would make hero movies that almost mirrored the world today. These were classics that people still found enjoyment out of, even if it wasn’t the most accurate portrayal of quirks.
“Yeah?” The kid answered casually. Mt. Lady tried to sweep his legs, but her kick went through them like jello.
“How old are you, kid?” Nowadays however, not as many people had seen them. Kamui Woods’ grandparents had a copy of these films so he was at least familiar with it. Before Phantom had the chance to answer, a powerful fist connected to his body, and sent the slime-like boy flying into the wall.
Luck was on their side. Reinforcements had finally arrived in the form of The Punching Hero: Death Arms. He was the only one so far, but the fight had only been going for less than 10 minutes, so it made sense.
“Finally!” Mt. Lady beamed, “I was trying to get a hit on that little fucker!” she did a little jump and punched into the air.
Death Arms looked at the wall that held the remains of Phantom. He had punched so hard that the wall had a crater in it. Phantom looked like a cracked egg. Death Arms paled.
“I really didn’t mean to hit him that hard. When you called for backup, you sounded desperate. I really thought he could take it.” He looked at his arms, the thing he held the most pride for, in shock and disgust, similarly to how Mt. Lady reacted.
“He’s not dead.” Mt. Lady went over to the man and comforted him, putting a hand on his shoulder and looking up.
“He’s not?” Death arms looked confused. While she explained the situation to him, Kamui Woods went over to where the boy was splattered. Already his goo-like body was wiggling and being pulled together. It was kind of gross to look at.
Kamui Woods grabbed a pair of anti-quirk cuffs, but wasn’t sure how to use it on the boy. Out of the gooey mass a limb started to form so he gently cuffed whatever it was. More limbs started writhing out and the cuff fell to the group. Kamui Woods panicked. Without having anything else he could do, he made a bar-like grid with his roots to try to stop them from forming. The goo started spreading to them and they broke over the force. Death Arms was able to snap out of his grief, and started punching the substance. Kamui Woods got a weird sense of déjà vu about a villain they had fought before and felt a phantom memory of smoke and fire. He hoped that boy was alright.
He snapped out of it when the goo started climbing up Death Arms’ arms. A sickening crack echoed throughout the alley and then screams. Phantom had broken his arms as if they were a toothpick. A black skull started to lurch outside from the rest of the mass. Skin bloomed like mold and covered the emerging body. The zombie-like figure was only mere inches from Death Arms face, his head and elongated neck bobbing back and forth like a snake trying to hold onto the hero's eye contact. Death Arm’s body thrashed despite his injuries as he desperately tried to escape from Phantoms’, no, the monster’s body. Kamui Woods had always known Death Arms to be a brave man, he had never seen the man scream, but today the streak had been broken. He screamed like a scared child.
Instead of overtaking the rest of the man’s body, it’s neck slithered past him. The goo receded and coagulated at Phantom’s head, then pooled down into the shape of his body. When the last of the slime left Death Arm’s body, the man collapsed and did not get back up. The slime started taking more color and soon the once familiar visage of Phantom was before them.
“O̷͈͂̔H̸͉̬̀͒ ̴̳͠ͅM̶̺̉͆Y̶̹͊͗ ̸͔͕̚Ĝ̶̗̣O̸͍͎̎͠D̶̰̐ ̵̯̭̉̈́T̵͍̳̊H̴͔͛A̸̢͝Ṭ̸̳̽͝ ̴̪͈̿F̶̰̬͗͐Ĕ̵͔͎̌L̵̼̃̂͜T̶̮͠ ̸̱͐S̸̢̄̈́O̶̦͇̾ ̴͙̖̽W̸̭̔E̵̢̛̎I̵̭͕̅͝Ŕ̴̳̺͂D̵̡͙͋!̷̟̎” He started shaking his hands like he was trying to dry them off.
Indescribable horror froze the heroes to the ground. Mt. Lady and Kamui Woods could only stare at the creature in terror. That was the only thing they had been able to do all night. He was too powerful for just the two of them to fight alone. Even Endeavor would have a hard time bringing him down.
Phantom continued to ignore them, laughing and mumbling to himself. He didn’t even see them as a threat. Kamui Woods looked over at Mt. Lady. There were only two options:
1) Retreat. They have no hope of beating him.
2) Stay and fight. So far Phantom had been only toying with them, but there was no telling how long that will last.
He looked into Mt. Lady’s eyes. They were just as passionate and determined as when the fight first began. They were heroes, of course they would stay and fight. Kamui Woods swore if he made it out of this, he would ask out Mt. Lady.
Phantom turned to them with a smile too big for a human face, it only took a second for it to be blasted off. A jet stream of water came from behind them, knocking Phantom away for the second time that fight. Backdraft and other heroes came pouring into the alley. It is a bad sign when so many heroes are needed for a single foe, but at this moment, Kamui Woods couldn’t be happier to see them. Someone started barking orders but he was too out of it to understand.
They surrounded the area where Phantom landed, but at enough of a distance in case something happens. Phantom was able to recover (of course), and stood before the heroes, something unseen in his eyes. His feet lifted off of the ground, which earned gasps from all around. Kamui Woods no longer had the threshold for any more surprises tonight. Phantom rose higher and higher, till he was looking down on all the heroes. They all braced for his attack…But nothing came.
Phantom simply turned and flew away, fading into the night like a falling star. A haunting silence filled the alley, the anticipation of what might happen still building. No one dared move from their battle stances. Then like a veil of smoke, it dissipated. It started as a few murmurs then spread into loud conversations and disagreements. In all the ruckus, a few heroes went up to Kamui Woods and Mt. Lady. It was clear to everyone that it must’ve been one hell of a fight. Mt. Lady was quick to snap out of whatever trance the two were still in, and started boasting about how she was able to hold Phantom off. Kamui Woods on the other hand had had too much excitement for the night and went to go sit down against a wall.
Paramedics and the police arrived on scene and immediately rushed to Death Arms, who still lay unresponsive on the ground. A tense excitement buzzed throughout the alley. No one had come this close to any member of Phantom since the Hosu incident. Kamui Woods thought he had an idea why. It wasn’t a group. It was a single person.
It was hard to believe it at first, but that's the only thing that made any sense to him right now. Maybe he was too tired from the fight, even now his brain was fighting with him about the fact that a person can only have one quirk. Kamui Woods lifted his helmet slightly to rub his face.
Nothing was impossible these days.
It was safe to say that Danny had had an eventful night. After he found the portal he was ready to go home (i.e. the shack he called home). Amity Park was still out of his reach, but now he was closer than he ever had been before. The feeling of not wanting to go nagged at him, but he shoved it deeper down.
He flew over the alleyway, just far enough to still be able to see the heroes below. He didn’t expect so many of them, but then again he supposed he was a wanted ‘criminal’. Typical. There were about 20 heroes down there; more still arriving, and some cops. Danny didn’t know if he would be able to take down all of them. He still didn’t know how powerful he was in this world, it was best not to risk it. He was just lucky these last few times..
He didn’t like running away from a fight and even now a part of him wanted to go back and finish it. That was why he was still so close. He watched the hulk of a man that punched him get loaded onto a stretcher. Serves him right, he thought bitterly. He would survive, just be on bed-rest for a few weeks.
Danny didn’t know what came over him. The hero wasn’t even able to hurt him, none of them could. Even when the hit sent him flying, Danny couldn’t feel anything. Not even when he collided with the wall. He thinks it was his instincts taking over. His new body scared him. For a second he was gone, he was only aware he was unaware. He came to when he heard the snap. No, it was more than just that. He felt the bones break inside of him. It felt like chewing into hard carrots. Luckily, Danny’s body didn’t try to eat the poor man. He could not handle the trauma that came with eating someone.
Danny also thought back to when that lady punched into his head. He thought it was all over. He felt all fuzzy and confused. It was like when you blew your nose too hard and for too long. It took him a moment to figure out what to do from there, but then he remembered his first night here. His ectoplasm moved outside of him. He just took that sensation and expanded it. Danny didn’t know if he would ever be used to his body.
He watched the heroes below like ants. They seemed happy enough, most of them going off into little groups and chatting, completely unaware that he was still there. He spotted the two heroes he fought earlier talking to an official looking women in black. They were further away from the others, probably for privacy. The women’s mousey assistant handed them what looked to be a large stack of paper covered in small words. He had no clue what that was about.
It was clear none of the heroes were going to hunt him or do anything else interesting for the night, so Danny flew away. He started making his way towards the coffee shop from before. Danny didn’t know why, he just thought he needed to go there. Besides, getting a sketchy job wasn’t the worst idea he ever had (that was going in the portal). Maybe when he goes back home his mom and dad might finally be proud of him for a change.
Danny made sure to memorize the area around to be able to find the portal again. He found a good land marker in the shape of a school or office building (it was hard to tell). It had two interconnected buildings made of glass in the shape of an ‘H’, and a tall concrete fence around it with an arc. It was distinct enough to find again and that's all that really mattered to Danny. It also happened to be pretty close to the coffee shop as well.
Danny had no trouble finding the little shop. The Coffee & Tea sign greeted him at the window. His glowing form reflected back at him and he jumped back a little. He forgot he looked like that… He stared at himself and took a deep breath for comfort and closed his eyes. He imagined his human face again. After a second, Danny didn’t feel any different, so peeked open an eye to check. Ah there he was, the human him. This level of self-indulgence might be unhealthy, but it made him happy. He looked different this time. There weren’t any veins under his skin and looked less like a corpse. He pulled down his suit a little and was shocked to see the blue fade down further under his shirt. He was getting better at this.
He untied his hoodie from his waist (honestly he was surprised he hadn’t lost it in the fight), and pulled it over. He could say that he was shocked to find that it had a subtle glow to it, but that would be a lie. It had just been in an area with a lot of ectoplasm. It made sense it was a little radioactive.
“There,” he posed in front of the window, “I look perfectly human.” In this world's standards at least. He shook his hands to get rid of the anxious energy he was building up. He checked himself one more time, then with a final breath, he went up to the door.
He was about to knock when he stopped instead.
“Tanaka?” Danny asked unsure at the door before him. He heard several clicks before the door opened. He couldn’t see a person on the other side, just the dark room of the café.
“Come in, Tommy” A staticky voice sounded from the speaker above. Danny jumped and the flights flicked. He walked in and shut the door behind him, careful not to make any noise.
It wasn’t like anything bad was gonna happen.
Zzz
A man arrived on the scene. He was a local hero who had become less active in recent years due to his other job as a teacher. His students were still away for internships, so he was able to use his free time for patrols (and avoid personal care no matter how much his husband begged). Principle Nezu gave him a special task to locate the vigilante ‘ group’, “Phantom”, before the Hero Commission , but so far has had no luck. The only leads were rumors, and the supposed sightings were too far apart to check in one night. He was actually in the middle of said search when he got an alert. Unfortunately, the location was across town, so it took him a while to get there.
Looks like they found him first.
He grabbed a bottle of eye drops from his pocket and wetted his eyes, an unfortunate side-effect of his quirk. Eye bags were a permanent feature on his face, a marker for how overworked he was. Despite this, his eyes were sharp as he looked over the scene. It was obvious there had been a fight there but the property damage was less than expected for someone as powerful and unknown as Phantom. He walked deeper into the alley where most of the people were. A small dent in the ground caught his eye. It was freshly made judging from the rubble around it, and about the size of a fist. It wasn’t close to the larger craters and so didn’t come from the fight. He kneeled down to get a better look at it. There was nothing of substance in the crater itself, but beside it was a small dirt pile and bug shells. Taking a small bag left over from a snack, he scooped up the dirt. This wasn’t the best way to transport the sample, but it was the only thing he had. He could give this to Principle Nezu so they could figure out what made Phantom respond like this.
A few heroes looked at him strangely, but didn’t approach him. Despite not being well known (choosing to stay underground for both professional and personal reasons), he still had the reputation of being odd.
“Eraser Head” A cop approached behind him, Shouta turned to meet their eyes. He recognized him as Tsukauchi Naomasa, All Might’s friend. The man looked more tired since Shouta had last seen him, but that wasn’t really a surprise. His eye bags had started to match his own. The two looked like they could be related.
“Detective Tsukauchi.” He greeted back. Tsukauchi reached out his hand and Shouta used it to pull himself off of the ground. “I take it All Might has informed you of the situation?” They could use all the help they could get at locating Phantom, and Tsukauchi’s resources would be invaluable.
“No, actually.” The man rubbed his neck, “It was Principle Nezu. All Might has chosen to stay out of this.” That surprised Shouta. It must’ve been clear because the man continued, “He has too many personal matters wrapped up in this, that is all I can say at this time.”
“I see.” All Might would’ve been able to cut down the search time significantly, but Shouta supposed with his decline in strength, that wasn’t the most realistic outcome. “That’s disappointing then.” Regardless of the man’s own feelings, he hopes he would at least still be able to give them information about AFO. No longer wanting to talk about All Might, Shouta moved forward with the conversation, “So what happened tonight?”
“While Mt. Lady and Kamui Woods were on patrol, they got a ‘weird vibe’ from the alleyway and decided to check it out. There they witnessed Phantom use an unidentified quirk, my theory is ectoplasm not to be confused with Ectoplasm’s quirk, and fought him.” A muscle in Shouta’s face twitched, but he was able to keep the rest of his face neutral, only nodding along with Tsukauchi. The man paid no mind to this and kept going, “Fortunately I was able to arrive before the Hero Commission, so they were more willing to share this information.” He stepped closer to Shouta and he mirrored the action. In a hushed voice Tsukauchi whispered, “After the first blow, his head exploded and turned into that same substance.”
Shouta couldn’t help his mouth from dropping. After his shock, his hands clamped into fists. He didn’t know much about Phantom, but from what Principle Nezu had told him, he did not have a good life before. He had to keep a clear head. Rationally he understood where the other heroes were coming from. Phantom was an unknown and could be violent. But to go so far as blowing the kid’s heads off? As the opening blow? That was something Shouta couldn’t understand.
Tsukauchi looked at him, a look of understanding and pity on his face. He knew Shouta had a soft spot for kids. He coughed a little, and continued on with his report, “His body behaved similarly throughout the fight. Death Arms shortly arrived on scene but had both of his arms broken. Then more heroes arrived to save them both.”
“Who attacked first?” Shouta interrupted. He could maybe understand if Phantom attacked or was acting aggressively than if he was just standing there.
“They did.” Tsukauchi handed him a sealed folder, “What I just told you was the shorthanded version. The rest is in the report”
Shouta quickly grabbed the folder and stuffed it into his jumpsuit, “And it’s safe to say the Hero Commission doesn’t know about this?” He was looking forward to reading it.
“As far as they know, I handed the only report over to Ms. Makoto to be destroyed” A smile spread on his face. They were asking him a lot to go against orders, but Phantom needed to be found.
The Hero Commission may have made official first contact with him, but that didn’t mean they had him. Both Principle Nezu and Shouta sore they would never get him. In a strange way, they actually did UA a favor.
There had been reports in the surrounding area but they were sporadic and far out, almost as if Phantom was looking for something, which means he’ll stay close by. This location was in the middle of it. They also confirmed that Phantom wouldn’t attack unless provoked. He really was just a kid… Shouta had to keep focus.
The Commission also did them a disservice. Now the kid would be more apprehensive around heroes, making Shouta’s job harder. He thanked the detective and the man left. If they were seen interacting too long it would be suspicious.
It was nearing 3 am, but Shouta still had a long morning of searching ahead of him. He doubted he would find Phantom tonight, but it was smart to strike while the iron is hot. First he had to read the report of course (he was looking forward to how the heroes defended their actions). So much to do at once. He inhaled deeply and rubbed the bridge of his nose, he could already feel a headache coming in. one thing was for certain…
He needed some coffee.
