#I like ships with complementary color schemes

Anya looks nothing like Yor and Loid because obviously they aren’t her biological parents, but the visual cues which symbolize that she is their child in every way that matters is fun. Loid’s trademark is his green suit. Yor has her red eyes and she’s in red when at home, while in her pink outer coat while outside . Anya has pink hair and green eyes. Anya’s a combination of her parent’s colors!

Why do you always draw Luz with the sun and moon earings? It's a very intentional choice.
Short answer: I have Sun and Moon earrings and I think they'd look cute on her!
Long answer: Ooo so I actually have several reasons! Soo there are several design elements that are present throughout the show to represent certain characters. As you probably know I’m a huge Huntceda shipper, and Luz’s main color scheme of purple is complementary to Hunter’s yellow… plus with Luz consistently having stars decorated in her clothes, I sort of associate them with the Sun and Moon! Opposites kind of ships. It reminds me of other ships I like, like Zutara (you rise with the Moon, I rise with the Sun! )and Reylo (light and dark).
I also really like using it because the Collector’s face is that of a Sun and Moon, which remind me of Mexican folk art and artesanias (:
And finally, I think it makes her a bit distinct! I don’t really have a super consistent style…so I wanted to draw her in a way that’s always a bit familiar… I think maybe giving her those signature earrings help her stand out! So if anyone who has seen my art sees a new drawing, hopefull it will recognizable as something I drew!

C'mon, you know I have to - KuroFai, for the ship game!
KuroFai! My beloved! Light of my weeaboo years!
Ship It
What made you ship it? -You know what, I can't remember what actually was the trigger? It's like trying to remember the first time I read Lord of the Rings. Lost in the mists of memories. I Have Always Shipped The Thing.
What are your favorite things about the ship?" -How perfectly complementary they are! I mean obviously, they were designed for each other -- literally made to be complements -- but it really just shows up in everything they do, from their color schemes, to their speech patterns, to their fighting style, to their body language. Opposites, but not in opposition; parts combining to form a stronger whole.
Is there an unpopular opinion you have on your ship? -Gosh! Can't think of many! Are there unpopular opinions in this fandom, in the year of our lord 2024? Hmm. I can say that I never got into the weird high school AU spinoff they did, the one where everyone had a twin. I always felt that if you took away all of their history together, you were taking away a lot of what made the ship wonderful. I prefer the canon, with all its confundities.

Imagine having your soul shipped to you in the mail.
Tumblr media
I got distracted and accidentally bumped it off a table yesterday, so the top portion broke, but I was able to superglue it back together. (For anyone interested, this was made by WTFcharms on Etsy. It's a nice, high-quality, and affordable alternative to the out-of-production official soul gems floating around out there.)
With all that said, I'd like to take this time to gush about the magical girl designs in Madoka Magica. I will be focusing primarily on the original five magical girls; as much as I love what Magia Record introduced to the franchise, there are so many characters. I will share my favorite Magia Record design at the end, though.
Let's get stared with...
Tumblr media
Mami Tomoe!
Tumblr media
I've always really liked Mami's design. I don't know if I've ever articulated the specific reasons why, but that's what I'm here to do now.
The influences from historical Western fashion, like her corset and boots. They make Mami look classy and fashionable, yet noticeably older than the others.
The plume on her hat. It's a cool detail in general, but it also makes me think of pre-20th century soldiers' uniforms.
The feminine yet down-to-earth feel. She's girly and optimistic at heart like Madoka, but the relative lack of frills makes her feel more mature and veteran-like in comparison.
The purplish coloring to her hat and stockings. It's just a bit of complementary color goodness.
The very slight change in her hair color. For Mami specifically, she gets a slightly brighter, more saturated shade of yellow. All the original girls have this characteristic, which I think is pretty cool.
Now, on to my favorite character...
Tumblr media
Sayaka Miki!
Tumblr media
The cape. Whether you want to compare her to a superhero or a knight, it's fitting for her heroic ideals.
The multilayered gloves. They're unique, and the deep navy blue of the longer gloves varies the color scheme a bit.
The armor-like breastplate on her otherwise soft cloth corset. It's another point for the knightly aesthetic, but it also plays into her personality. Her heart (emotions, not actual blood-pumping heart) is vulnerable. She's expressive, but she keeps her true feelings well-guarded no matter how much it ends up hurting her.
The gold trim on various clothing pieces. It's cool, it's flashy, and it reflects Sayaka's pride in being a magical girl who fights for justice.
The angled skirt. Even if it doesn't prove to be especially practical, it looks athletic and good for combat.
The belts holding up her stockings. I just think they're neat.
The fortissimo hairpin (shown in the gif). It ties into her wish and reflects her bombastic emotions.
Sayaka's hair shifts from a muted cerulean to a bright sky blue. This is pretty in-line with her cheeriness and idealism.
Here, we have (arguably) one of the sanest members of the cast...
Tumblr media
Kyoko Sakura!
Tumblr media
Though somewhat simple at a first glance, Kyoko's outfit has quite a bit going on.
The fleur-de-lis like pattern under her soul gem. The fleur-de-lis is often used to represent Christian saints; Kyoko grew up in a Christian family.
The long dress/coat over a shorter skirt. One may compare the coat to a priest's robes.
The boots. Kyoko is the only one of the main cast to not fight in heels, complementing her pragmatic nature.
The detached sleeves exposing her shoulders. They make her look powerful and tough.
The white accents on her otherwise dark outfit. It adds variety, but it also alludes to the selfless reasoning behind her wish.
Kyoko's hair changes from a crimson shade to a lighter, brighter burgundy. Where civilian Kyoko lives in the shadows, magical girl Kyoko fights openly and aggressively.
Now, let's look at the ever-popular...
Tumblr media
Homura Akemi!
Tumblr media
Homura's design may not be super flashy, but it's still super cool in lots of ways.
The stockings. Solid black stockings would have worked well enough, but the purple diamond print going down the sides adds some flair.
The practicality. Ignoring the fact that she's sprinting around in stilettos, Homura's magical girl outfit looks pretty comfortable and easy to move in.
The subtlety. Whether we're discussing the past or the present, Homura was never one to desire the spotlight. Her subdued design and color scheme reflect this aspect of her personality.
The resemblance to a school uniform. She's got the classic bow and sailor collar, but she also borrows a unique element from the Mitakihara uniform specifically: the cut of the shirt. It has two downward points in the front and one in the back, though it is more exaggerated on her magical girl outfit.
Homura's hair changes to a darker shade of gray/black. It's incredibly minute, but it plays up her "dark, mysterious transfer student" persona.
Of course, we can't forget the one and only...
Tumblr media
Madoka Kaname!
Tumblr media
She has a lot in common with your stereotypical magical girls (think Sailor Moon and Mew Ichigo), but that doesn't mean there isn't a lot to admire about her design.
The yellow on her dress' bodice. It breaks up all the pink and white while still looking good in the overall color scheme.
The points on her overskirt. They look like flower petals, specifically those of a cherry blossom.
The frills and bows everywhere. Super genre-typical, super cutesy, super Madoka.
The darker pink ribbons on her gloves. They add a bit of pizzazz to what would otherwise be one of her plainer accessories.
The crossed laces on her shoes. It isn't that important of a detail, but it's a unique approach to making her already-detailed outfit even fancier.
Madoka's hair changes from a watermelon pink to more of a bubblegum pink. This just adds to her sugary cuteness and makes you feel even worse when she suffers.
And finally, as promised, my favorite Magia Record design...
Tumblr media
Kanoko Yayoi!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I couldn't find a good, clean design sheet for Kanoko, so I chose to use some of her card artwork--one that offers a look at the front detailing (3-star), and one that gives us a good look at her shoes (5-star). So, what exactly do I love so much about her design?
The Victorian influences, like her top hat and corset. I'm a sucker for mid-to-late Victorian Era aesthetics.
The overall "cute but classy" vibe. The gold and emerald green accents on her accessories, the black-and-white color scheme, and the long gloves make her look quite a bit fancier than some other magical girls; but her frilly shorts, Mary Jane-like shoes, and cropped jacket balance everything out so she still looks like a magical girl rather than, say, a lost Black Butler OC.
The stitched detailing on most of her accessories. It really fits her fashion designer theme.
She wears shorts instead of a skirt. This isn't a horribly rare thing in the genre, especially when accounting for other Magia Record characters, but it's still pretty unique.
The holes in her cuffs. They look like the eyes of sewing needles, looping back to her wish/theme.
Aaaaaaand she may or may not look quite a bit like me. Not identical, but enough to make me do a double-take when I first saw her. That gave me the happy brain tingles. :)
Also, can we just talk about how sick her Doppel is?
Tumblr media
Her name is Broderie, and she's the witch of torn seams. She can destroy anything, even concepts...but she's only really interested in destroying Kanoko's work. And of course, despite being labeled as a thread trimmer, she looks like a mushroom. ^^' But yeah. My girl finally got a Doppel. I'm so proud of her. :')
Anyway, thanks for coming to my TED Talk.

I realize in this* convoluted series of posts I was so focused on gym leaders and elite four as the sort of core of any games cast that I just casually neglected a bunch of side characters, so I figure it's a good time to go back and rectify some of that, starting with the now topical Kalos team...
*[Kanto] [Johto] [Hoenn] [Sinnoh] [Unova] [Kalos] [Alola] [Galar] [Hisui] [Champs] [Paldea] [Paldea2] [Paldea3] [Teams] [Misc.]
Tumblr media
While they are in fact all named after plants, they are also themed around the ABCMX classification system for solar flares.
Aliana's name is actually AKEBI[アケビ] as in akebi[木通] the japanese name of the Akebia quinata, commonly called the chocolate vine, five-leaf chocolate vine or just five-leaf akebia.
Bryony's name in japanese is just BARA[バラ] as in bara[薔薇]: "rose." A bizarre choice for a character with a green motif, and odd for such a minor side character when Roses are so iconic and universally beloved. Kind of feels, like a waste.
Celosia's name was CORREA[コレア] after the genus of flower shrubs that includes things like the common correa(aka native fuchsia), the Salmon Correa i used in the picture above, and the Dusky Bell among others.
Mable is in fact named MOMIJI[モミジ], after momiji[紅葉]: Japanese Maple, which seemed confusing at first, as those are obviously famously red leaved, but it turns out there are some prizes cultivars that can turns range of purples and violets instead, and as an odd result of this there are notorious scams built around the faking of a mythic japanese blue maple mutation. (Although the other flowers aren't perfect matches to their girls' color schemes either so maybe that's a coincidence)
Xerosic's name was originally XEROSICY[クセロシキ] named after Xerosicyos, a genus of plant notable for their round flat leaves, perhaps most notably the Xerosicyos danguyi: the Silver-Dollar Plant.
oh but there's more...
Tumblr media
But other than the obvious Flare association, it also ties back into the sun themes evoked by Lysandre being a descendent of AZ/his brother and as a kind of Kalos/France tied to the Parfum Palace/Palace of Versailles, is a parallel to King Louis XIV, le Roi Soleil:"The Sun King".
Also Lysandre's name in Japanese is just straight up Fleurdelis[フラダリ] which is of course extremely silly sounding. But the ⚜️ is itself designed after the Lily flower, and of course so is the Ultimate Weapon and AZ's special Floette.
In this vein I figured I could tackle a handful of other villain teams. A fun if obtuse one is that the extended Team Rocket cast in HGSS are in fact all named after rockets, both space ships and missiles.
Tumblr media
Archer was originally APOLLO[アポロ] named after the Apollo Missions carried out by NASA throughout the 60s, utilizing the Saturn V model rockets that would eventually put the first manned crew on the moon with the Apollo 11.
Ariana is ATHENA[アテナ] was named after the Athena series rockets built and launched throughout the 1990s. I get the feeling they just picked it because it had a conveniently complementary name to Apollo.
Petrel is LAMBDA[ラムダ] is named after a family of rockets made in Japan and launched the first Japanese satellite, the Osumi, into space in 1970.
and finally Proton was just LANCE[ランス] and seemingly named after the MGM-52 Lance missiles developed by the US military in the `1970s.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Oddly while Maxie and Archie are named after flowers...
Maxie was MATSUBUSA[マツブサ] after the matsubasa[松房] tree, a type of star anise with a distinctive red starburst shaped flower.
Archie was AOGIRI[アオギリ] the Chinese-parasol tree, which is actually kind of underwhelming plant to have as a namesake, but the actual etymology of the name aogiri[青桐] is "Blue+Pauloniwa" and I assume the association with Blue is really the motivating factor re.
Courtney was KAGARI[カガリ] from kagari[篝] the Japanese word for a metal basket like structure that you put on a pedestal or tripod to put firewood in to burn as like a big torch. It can also refer to a bonfire.
Tabitha is HOMURA[ホムラ] from homura[炎] which is just the word for a flame or a blaze.
Matt is just USHIO[ウシオ] from ushio[潮]: "tide"
and Shelley is IZUMI[イズミ] from izumi[泉]: a "spring" or "fountain" of water.
Tumblr media
Galaxy's are all obvious, although in English they renamed Pluto to Charon, Pluto's coorbital moon.
Oh and Cyrus himself being the only person not named after a planet, was named AKAGI[アカギ] after the Bishop Wood tree, akagi[赤木].
Tumblr media
Okay so for one it's bonkers that N's real name is NATURAL HARMONIA[ナチュラル・ハルモニア] which, given some context I'm going to say is a reference to Natural Harmonics in music. But let me be real with you: I don't know shit about music theory so I cannot verify that claim, nor was I able to verify if the image I was googling to throw up here even accurately depicts "Natural Harmony" so take this one in particular with a hefty grain of salt...
And with that disclaimer in mind, Ghetsis's name is actually G-Cis HARMONIA[ゲーチス・ハルモニア], G-Cis as in "G-C♯" which is a tritone, and tritone's have the curious nickname of "The Devil's Interval" or diabolus in musica:"The Devil in Music" because of the extreme dissonance the gap in tone makes.
then there's N's foster sisters, Anthea, whose real name is VERBENA[バーベナ], after the flower Verbena, which has a variety of divine and mystical associations in western culture.
and Concordia's name is actually HELENA[ヘレナ] named after the St.Helena Olive, which I take from her epithet as "Goddess of Peace" is meant to reference an olive branch as a symbolic peace offering.
Tumblr media
Then there's also Colress, named Achroma[アクロマ] as in "Achromatic", as in Without Color, hence the English name being "Colorless."
And then there's the other sages:
ROOD[ロット] Dutch for "Red"
Bronius was originally SUMRA[スムラ] from the arabic word samra[*] for "brown/tawny/deep yellow." (*I tried to copy paste the arabic text here but for some reason it and the brackets together were really screwing up the formatting...)
GIALLO[ジャロ] like Rood was unchanged, and is just Italian for "Yellow."
Ryoku was shortened from RYOKUSHI[リョクシ] as in ryokushi[緑色]: "green."
Gorm was AZULA[アスラ] From the Spanish Azul:"Blue"
and Zinzolin was named ヴィオ[ヴィオ] from Violet. Technically a few languages all spell it the same, but of note, the "English" name Zinzolin is French for a reddish-violet color
Bafflingly the Seven Sages includes Ghetsis, who of course is not named after a color, so between him and Bronius/Sumra being brown, they do not make a seven color rainbow spectrum. Why no Indigo or Orange? And why a green sage when Ghetsis and N have such strong green color coding? Why don't the sprites for the sages match their color namesakes???
Also the Seven Sages could have been a harmonic scale reference, yet aren't?? despite N and Ghetsis' thing.
It's interesting that Zinzolin is the one sage who comes back with NeoPlasma in BW2, and he is the one named in French... I wonder if he'll make an appearance in Z-A.
Tumblr media
Team Skull we did in the Alola captains batch oh wait wtf no I didn't.. Weird, I coudl have sworn iI included Plumeria and Guzma since they were clearly positioned as sort of pseudo captains for Poison and Bug types.
Guzma's name was in fact just GUZMA[グズマ] in Japanese, from the Guamania genus of Tufted Airplant
and Plumeria's name was PLUMERI[プルメリ] from the plumeria flower, aka frangipani.
Tumblr media
But there's still the Aether Foundation, the "surprise" real evil team of the game. Lusimine, Lillie, Gladion, Faba and Wicke.
Lillie's name is basically the same in English and Japanese, LILIE[リーリエ] the German name for the lily, and of course her overall disposition and design are clearly based on a pure white lily.
Gladion's name is GLADIO[グラジオ] it could easily refer directly to the Gladiolus flower, the "sword flower", but I'm assuming it's from Gladiole specifically, as that's the German name for the flower, and the whole of not just Lusamine's family but the Aether staff as well are all named in German.
Lusamine's name is basically the same in Japanese, although it was probably meant to be romanized as LSAMINE[ルザミーネ] because it comes from Balsamine, German name of the Balsam plant,
Faba's name was Saubuoh[ザオボー] from Saubohne, German name for the Fava bean, which accounts for his coloration.
Wicke is just WICKE[ビッケ] again the German name for the Vetch plant.
oh and Mohn's name is MOHN[モーン] and it's German for Poppy. Unlike the Poppy in Paldea, whose look is based on the flower in bloom, I'm pretty certain from his build and his hair/hat that Mohn is supposed to look like a Poppy seed, the type you'd harvest milk of the poppy, or poppy's tears from... to make opium...
Tumblr media
Also the Ultra Recon Squad, who have a fun theme were, to play into the way they come from a lightless alien world, they're all named after underwater plants or algae. I especially like the algae ones because despite how some alga, like kelp and seaweeds tend to look, they are not in fact plants, and this familiar yet different relationship feels like it fits the themes of the Ultra Beasts.
Dulse is in fact just DULSE[ダルス] a type of algae found in the waters around Ireland and Sctoland
Zossie's name is AMAMO[アマモ] from amamo[甘藻] the Japanese name for Eelgrass(Zostera marina)
Soliera's name is MIRIN[ミリン] which is the Japanese name for the genus Solieria
Phyco's name is SHIONIRA[シオニラ] is from the Japanese name for the Alismatales order of plants comprising a wide range of species, some of which grow near bodies of water, some grow in or above the water, and others still grow entirely underwater.
Tumblr media
So obviously Rose is ROSE[ローズ], who I guess msut have seemed too obvious because I totally skipped him before... His brother Peony is a play on the fact that the Rose and Peony are sort of undisputed romantic icons in the west and east respectively, although some of the rose's reputation has bled into the east as well. (also i forgot to put it in the image but the Tudor rose and Galar being England feels obvious even if it didn't really play into the plot or themes of SwSh's story)
Speaking of Peony... His daughter Peonia's name is actually SHAKUYA[シャクヤ] from shakuya[芍薬] the Japanese name for the Chinese peony (Paeonia lactiflora).
Oleana's name was actually just OLIVE[オリーヴ].
Oddly there's not really anyone of note that's actually a member of Team Yell, they don't have a real leader or admins, just Marnie as the object of their support.
Tumblr media
I did everyone in Team Star in my first Paldea post, but worth noting is the alias Cassiopeia refers to the constellation, hence team Star, but moreover the individual star squads are each named after a major star within the constellation: Segin, Ruchbah, Tsih, Schedar, and Caph. (Tsih and Navi are two names for the star γ(gamma) Cassiopeiae, just labeled "γ" above.)
And with that we're all brought up to speed with evil teams, until Z-A drops some new ones on us...

Rants!
Jazz/prowl: This is definitely a crackship but absolutely not a rarepair - they are the most popular pairing in the fandom by a lot but they *rarely ever* interact on screen or on the page. As far as I can tell people originally shipped them because they kinda have the same color scheme and for 40 years this ship has just somehow stayed popular and spread through other Transformers property fandoms. (ex. People depict live-action jazzprowl pretty often even though Prowl isn’t even mentioned in the movies??) Depending on the TF property, Jazz is a racing Porsche who loves music and causing chaos and doing spy stuff and Prowl is the regimented highway patrol car who has lots of plans. Especially in TF media/fandom based on the Generation 1 cartoon, they are typically second and third in command of the Autobots, or at least both in command positions - two sides of the same coin, with complementary personalities and skills that keep the army running. They are an extremely versatile ship and in comparison to other TF ships, lend themselves to sneaky and/or morally gray stories.
Bellamy/Bartolomeo/Cavendish: (1st submission) you will get no other submissions for this pairing but i love them so much!! just three silly little guys!!
(2nd submission) they are just three silly little guys. is one of them a cannibal? maybe! it sure is his title but i’ve never seen him eat any one. they all argue like an old married couple. they bonded in the middle of a war.

#30!!!
Hi there, lovebird! It's been a minute but I'm so happy to see you :D Hope you're having a lovely day 💗💗💗 (here's a candy for u btw 🍬)
30. Is there a ship you like but you dislike the fandom?
Ooooh, jeez. This would be I think more to do with how small the fandom is (I'm sure there's 2 or 3 fantastic people out there and they are literal godsends but I simply don't interact with the fandom much at all bc I've moved to other media) than how unlikeable the fandom is but! I really like Talia of Xeris and Auriana of Volta from Lolirock together! They're also kind of a rarepair so there's that as well.
Tumblr media
I mean, just look at them! They're very cute together (Talia's on the left and Auriana's on the right). AND they've got complementary color schemes so what's not to love??? 🧡💙

Yeah, so, um, was the theme of this episode “abandon ship” on purpose? Because, it starts with the gang talking about how Marinette seems better off with Luka, then moves on to dialling Kagami’s jealousy up until it’s her only character trait when dealing with Adrien’s other friends, Marinette turning into a mindless Adrien fangirl who ruins everything by only being able to think of Adrien ever, and then finally shows the boys having much more healthy interactions with each other than any of the girls in the episode. Seriously, Luka and Adrien think of each other highly, they work well together and they play complementary instruments. The instrument thing is even emphasized because the pianist Jagged was also looking for a guitarist in this episode. It’s hard to think they did that completely on accident. To top it all off, they have that color contrast palette thing in their designs that makes them look like they’re meant to be on screen together that this show loves to do with characters who are paired together.
Of course, considering how much more fun both Kagami and Marinette are in other episodes, I’m sure this episode means to simply emphasize their character flaws so that another one can challenge them later down the line, since that’s pretty common for this show. Kagami’s jealousy over Adrien most likely has a reason behind it, like she’s insecure over her place in his life, what with being a new arrival, and one with romantic designs on him. Meanwhile, on Marinette’s side, Marinette herself acknowledges that she’s acting way off earlier in the episode, even as she goes on to repeat the same mistake in another situation. Adrien has always been a distraction to Marinette, but never to this degree.
The theme of the episode more solidly seems to be “the right partner for the right job”. Judging from their interactions, Jagged and Anarka’s partnership was more complicated than just bandmates, which is why Anarka rejects the thought of getting back together so firmly. Meanwhile, with Vivica, their working relationship works fine as long as they don’t get too personal, like sharing quarters too closely. Similarly, Marinette had to realize that she couldn’t pick a superhero partner based on her romantic aspirations. Being with Adrien had her ignoring Cat Noir’s absence, when he’s always been a key element in most of her plans, while also being incredibly distracted by Adrien’s close proximity. Meanwhile, Luka slid perfectly into the slot between her and Cat Noir, complementing them both and creating a functioning trio that could take down the immensely slippery Desperada. And then we closed off with the show actually acknolwedging for the first time that Adrien and Luka can make their own picks when it comes to romantic partners, even if it seems Alya mostly said that to justify Marinette dragging her heels, implying the boys are the ones who need to make up their minds when Marinette is the one with feelings for them both.
Then again, I have mentioned how Marinette’s primary goal in her schemes seems to be to get Adrien to fall for her and confess to her instead of her confessing to him, with at least one notable exception being an episode where she thinks Adrien already tried but failed to confess to her (Dark Cupid). So Alya implying Adrien could be the one to approach Marinette actually enforces this idea that Adrien should be the one to act and change their relationship.

ML NY Special Review
Finally finished my review on the ML NY Special and it’s going to be a long review, I won’t lie.  I will be breaking this down in two sections.  First section will be focused through the perspective as a professional (animation industry) and the second section through the perspective as a viewer and ML fan.
I won’t deny, I will be criticizing a few things and really give large opinionated thoughts; I’m sure it will piss people off, but I’m gonna be honest and I don’t give a damn.  I’ve been here since the beginning and I’m gonna go all out.  It wouldn’t be the first time I pissed people off.
Again, keep in mind these are my views/opinions as a professional and as a viewer/fan.  If you can’t handle some of the strong opinions that will come from this review, then keep moving on.  Don’t waste your time if you can’t handle certain characters or subjects being discussed in a different light.
If you wish to continue, then click the “keep reading” option.
As an animator, this is one of my favorite things to do with animated shows or movies.  I absolutely love breaking things down and giving opinions on the whys, whats, and hows.  Never do I aim to prove my opinions right.  My goal is to simply make you think and consider.  And if you don’t agree then that’s completely fine.  That’s how it works.
Now, the NY Special has definitely exceeded the quality than what I expected.  I absolutely love SAMG as a company.  I think this is by far one of the best that SAMG has produced for Miraculous as a whole.  Even better than the origin episodes. The lighting is probably the best I’ve seen in a 3D animated tv series, by far. It was stunning and gorgeous and worked well with the given mood that was set throughout the hour of the special.  I would say there are two scenes in particular that I felt were the best lit scenes.
The first scene is definitely near the beginning when the class landed in NY and where traveling in the bus.  They stopped either at the hotel or museum and the shot was the buses in front of the large building where you have the other city buildings around it.  That shot was gorgeous; the orange hues falling on top of the buildings and gaining that purple and blue shadows was great.  It’s honestly one of my favorite complementary color schemes to use when lighting most scenes in animation.  It helps achieve a nice balance when setting mood but also to get a nice glance at the shapes of the models in the scene.  Perfection.
As for the second scene, I would have to say it was the moment Adrien left and Marinette was biking to chase after him and she fell.  That moment the scene focused on Marinette on the ground and in the rain spoke many volumes.  The color tone of the scene was perfect and captured the common traits used in many shows and films to further drive the sense of sadness and overall emotional effect; using the traditional trait of rain made the scene work and stand out during the struggles that Marinette was dealing with.
The rain in general was outstanding on it’s own.  Liquids in animation are tough, not an easy thing to do. The way the rain was animated was probably the best rain I’ve seen in most 3D animated tv series.  I will even say it beats the rain from the origin episodes which is amazing because it shows the growth alone that SAMG has come from since the first season of the series.
They create stunning quality work and by far are the best of the best from all the companies that ZAG uses or had used for the show.  I won’t lie, I still can’t fathom how Jeremy/ZAG could let such a company go but Jeremy isn’t the greatest with the money, so it’s not a shocker.  It definitely shows that man doesn’t know how to properly run a company and treat a show.  I honestly blame him for pretty much the entire outcome of the series and that’s my god honest opinionated truth as a professional.
The pacing of the special I felt was good, though I do think it would have been nice to have had an extra 30 minutes to help flow areas a bit better or more, but I can understand the time constraints, especially after hearing about how Thomas stated that the special was going to be two hours originally. And I will be honest, I wouldn’t have minded that.  I think it would have been fantastic to have had a longer span episode special, but I understand a lot of the struggles that no doubt the team had endured.
Overall, some issues, but 10 out of 10 on animation and quality output.
Now the second section; viewing through the eyes as a viewer and fan.
As a fan of ML, I will not beat around the bush, I truly believe this special was disappointing plot wise.  And I don’t blame Thomas and his team for the issue.  As stated previously, my anger and frustration is more on Jeremy/ZAG for everything that has come from ML as a show and especially the result of the NY special.
My biggest issue with the special was the focal point: Adrinette.
How many damn times must I hear, “they’re meant for each other” or “aren’t they perfect together” and so forth.  I get it. You can adore Adrientte but I don’t need it shoved down my throat every five minutes.  I don’t give an ounce of care that Adrien and Marinette are endgame and that they’re “soulmates”.  The romance between those two means absolutely nothing to me.  It was cute and fun in the beginning when the series first started, but I’m tired of it.  I don’t care about the love square.  I don’t care about the “soulmate” trope when in reality anyone can be someone’s soulmate with the right care.  That was no doubt the biggest issue for me in the entire special.
In my opinion, it would have been perfect if it wasn’t Adrinette centric.  This was the best moment to show Marinette is improving herself but it had to become fan service because god forbid it felt like they needed to please the Adrinette shippers that their ship is still valid. If we’re judging this based off the season 3 finale, I won’t lie, this special fit better as a season 2 finale or mid season 3 than the end of season 3.
I’m seriously more disappointed that the special wasn’t more on Marinette and herself as a character.  They were in New York, another strong hub for fashion.  This was a perfect opportunity to explore more of her interests as a fashion designer and maybe meeting some new people.  Who knows, maybe even Jagged Stone as an international rock star. But overall it was a lost opportunity to expand more on her for the sake of shipping.
I think it would have also been cool to see her and Chat Noir maybe learn some methods/training from the US heroes and get a glimpse into a world of heroism that is different in cultures and circumstances.  Which honestly made sense to me how US heroes didn’t care about identity because Ladybug and Chat Noir have magical based items that are no doubt more powerful and outside sources that I’m sure would be willing to destroy to obtain it.
Another problem I had was how I felt we were robbed without having Kagami and Luka go to New York. Or if anything, more with Luka than Kagami. I love Kagami with all my being, but I doubt her mother would let her go to New York.  But imagine Luka being there. We could have had a flipping jam session between Luka and Jess.  I felt we were cheated, it would have been amazing to see two incredible guitarists jam it out and two people who have a passion for music find a friend in each other. I would have given anything to have had that moment.
Though in general I would have enjoyed anything else if it just wasn’t Adrinette centric.  I’m positive everyone in the fandom is on the same page that they’re “soulmates” but there’s more that can be done than a damn ship that has followers that attack and annoy anyone who doesn’t ship them.  Because, god forbid, Adrien and Marinette apparently aren’t allowed to be happy with others. I swear, half the fandom (hardcore adrinette shippers) treat Adrien more as an object than the ML characters themselves.
Nothing against the ship, but it’s just not for me and that’s okay.  I simply can’t relate to Adrien as a romantic choice of a character.  When Luka came into existence, I was in awe. I found a character I could relate too because I was as close to similarity than any other character in a show before.  And that’s something I’ve noticed with this fandom, hating characters because to them they’re nothing but boring.
Fans need to understand that one will not understand everything in a show, especially characters.  Just because you hate a character and find them boring doesn’t mean they’re terribly written.  You as a viewer simply can’t relate to them and that’s completely fine.  There will always be some who can relate and understand while others don’t, but that shouldn’t be a reason to argue against people who love a certain character.
And I’m being serious, I enjoyed the 30 seconds of Kagami and Luka with their love interests more than the hour of Adrinette.  It’s just overall sad.  There is so much potential that could have been the special focus wise but felt it was there to show why Adrinette is “superior” when it’s really not.  They’re only one of many ships that are equally good.  It comes down to how it’s portrayed and done.
However, since I know we’re stuck with Adrinette no matter what, I’m going to end this review with this as a food for thought but again, this is a simple opinion.
There was one thing that stood out and caught myself and some of my friends in a ML server attention.  In the NY special there were strong moments that revolved around bikes.  So, out of curiosity, I searched for symbolism meanings about bikes during the server’s conversation and it might hint to what might happen or what might come in the future of the show.
The bike symbolizes the moving circle of life.
Seeing a bicycle is a hint that you will reach somewhere. This could either be your motivation or your future plan. Cycling refers to the different moods that a person feels. Bicycles are also related to the ups and downs of life. For instance, riding a bicycle gives you both smooth edges and rough pebbles on your journey. The smooth edges are related to the happy times of your life and the rough pebbles denote the challenges of life.
So, if we want to use this to break down ML, this in a way, represents Lukanette and Adrinette.  Luka are the smooth edges in Marinette’s journey.  He’s the one that calms her, helps her think things through, focuses on what Marinette wants to do rather tell her what she should do.  Never once does he tell her to do this or do that, but simply asks her what it is she wants. Luka, is pretty much her guide. The happy times as Marinette where she appears happiest without the burdens and overwhelming stress of her other life.  Whereas Adrien is the rough pebbles in her journey, the challenges to properly talk with the one she views as a love interest or simply to build that perfect friendship/relationship.  Yes, they’re friends, but they’re not as strong as friends like Marinette and Alya or Adrien and Nino. Adrien is a challenge in her life and always will be until she learns to let go and mature.
The other moment that stood out with the bike was the moment Marinette was pressured to chase after Adrien to get him to stay.  She chases after him on a bike but falls off in the end.
Falling off the Bicycle: This indicates that you are losing your self-confidence.
Spend time with your loved ones and take suggestions from the experienced people. Join a course on building your personality and motivation. Do things that interest you the most and this will surely help to bring back your confidence level. This indicates a frenzied lifestyle and the need to slow down.
This here makes me believe that Luka is the “experienced people” in Marinette’s life.  Other than Kagami, Luka is the only mature one in Marinette’s life in her friend group.  He’s one of the biggest motivators in Marinette’s life as of recent.  Putting her interests at heart that have helped her build her confidence.  We know Marinette has a frenzied lifestyle with everything that she has on her shoulders as well as her passions.  And Luka is one of the very few, if not, only one in her friend group that can calm Marinette and help her slow down and simply relax.
I know Adrinette is endgame, but I won’t deny when I say if there was anything that ML could do, is that they make Adrigami and Lukanette endgame.  So many shows always pair the two main characters, always.  If there is any message that I would have loved to see come from a show like ML, it would simply be “Your first love/crush will not always be the one and that’s okay. That your first crush/love could be the greatest friendship you ever have. And the second chances in your life are just as valuable as the first and may be even better for you.”
Fans might hate Kagami and Luka, but as far as I’m concerned from everything I’ve watched since the beginning, the only reason you’re getting your Adrinette in the end is all because of Luka.  If it weren’t for him majority of the time, y’all wouldn’t have half of your love square moments.  So, Luka is the true MVP in my book.  Because unlike many of the others, he doesn’t put pressure on Marinette and that’s what Marinette doesn’t need right now, more pressure.
Adrien and Marinette might be endgame, but those two need people outside of their classmates because everyone is too tunnel vision.  Luka and Kagami are the only ones that will help Adrien and Marinette mature, cause those two will not be able to do it themselves.  So, if you want your Adrinette, you’re gonna have to suffer through Lukanette and Adrigami.

When we at the subject of Best Boy Rock Lee, I have to confess something: I actually LIKE "Rock Lee's Springtime of Youth". It was dumb but had sweet and funny content (and no traumatzing my man Lee). But I still don't get what he saw in Sakura.
Never watched Rock Lee's Springtime of Youth, but the art style seemed cute at least. And of course, more screen time for Lee and the rest of Team Gai is always welcomed and appreciated, because it's what they deserve. And hey, kids can't control what crushes they get. Honestly, if she'd have given him the time of day and not been so goo-goo over Sasuke, I might have actually shipped them. They have a nice complementary color scheme and they'd probably be good together

Beware of the Brothers! - The Twins That Aren’t Twins Analysis
Tumblr media
I recently read some of the comic Beware of the Brothers! (그 오빠들을 조심해!) and my eyes were drawn to the clothes and what they could mean. I was really interested in the two youngest Ernst children, Hari--the adopted daughter--and Eric--the twin without a twin.
If you’ve read the story, you know that Hari was brought in, at first, as a replacement for the daughter that the Ernst family lost. Quickly, Eugene puts an end to the “replacement” fantasy of his parents and luckily we never went through the common trope of Hari being miss-named, which would have undoubtedly been more traumatic for everyone of the characters. Instead, the story progresses quickly, allowing Hari to adjust to her restarted life as the adopted child of a noble family. It also allows me to get to the point I want to make in this review of the fashion choices by the creator(s) of the series.
Tell me, what do you think of when you see a pair in matching outfits? If the people look alike or are children, I generally think twins or siblings. I mean, I have two nieces that are a little more than a year a part who are always dressed the same by their mother. It’s a thing. And, as a middle schooler I regularly found myself “twinning” with my besties. As an adult, especially consider the media I consume, I noticed couples wearing matching and complimentary outfits--a topic I believe I have mentioned before but will mention again here.
Matching outfits and complementary outfits are my favorite in any visual media. I particularly love matching outfits in comics since it usually symbolizes one of two things--love interests and or a mental connection with another person. You see it often in uniforms or coupled outfits, and when the pairing or unit is in distress, the first thing that is usually replaced, thrown out, or lost is that matching element.
Which is why I am fascinated by Hari and Eric in Beware of the Brothers!.
The two youngest siblings are not twins even though they really do look like it in many regards. We know that Hari is almost a spitting image of the late Ernest daughter, save for her eyes, based on other images, but still they have no blood relationship with each other as far as we, the audience, know and as far as they, the siblings, know. The Ernest couple never mention a lost cousin, a bastard child, or anything else, so in all regards Hari really is randomly a spitting image of their late blood relation and yet not one. This is actually a major point of strife among the four siblings (three blood related boys and Hari) in the beginning, ESPECIALLY for Eric who lost his twin.
Eric and Hari, therefore, do NOT get along in the beginning. Arguably, it takes these two the longest to come to terms with each other over all. In fact, Hari admits to them being down right violent with each other at first--with the two going so far as to kick, trip, and push each other. Additionally, we see that  being compared or thought of as twins is really strikingly hard on Eric when the one time it does happen in the series, he runs away:
Tumblr media
But it’s hard not to see them as such when you look at how they are dressed and behave as the work continues.
Early in the series, they always wore different clothes, example:
Tumblr media
Hari has a pink and grey color scheme in the image above, while Eric is wearing blues and white. The costumes aren’t complementary colors, they don’t match and they’re obviously different designs even in chibi style.
But in the moment they are compared as twins, they look like this:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Their colors are in the same family and the the designs are similar--more so than when compared to any of the other siblings--and, they’re both missing front teeth in this scene. They were dressed like twins in that moment. Definitely with a variation of color, but ultimately very close.
Then we see the pattern repeated once they grow up.
For example, here they are as teens:
Tumblr media
And again:
Tumblr media
Even in later scenes as children:
Tumblr media
Did you notice the pattern?
The two are wearing clothes in similar color families. Eric and Hari wear matching patterns, with Eric having a darker corresponding color to Hari’s pastels in most shots. Even in the last image where they stand as children saying goodbye to the Vestia family, Hari and Eric are the only ones in a blue color scheme from their household. If she wears light blue, he wears dark. Her dress has pink flowers on a blue-grey background, Eric wears a dark blue grey coat with a darker pink ascot. Finally, in the image directly above, Eric is wearing a lavender-blue in between the two lavender-blues of Hari’s outfit.
They match.
We see this style of matching/complimentary color schemes with the Vestia children too:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The off-whites of the two siblings are the same, the blacks are the same shades and both on their legs, the grey toned vest (boy) and dress (girl) are similarly tinted from the same purple-pinkish family.
It actually feels very telling in this scene that Hari is closer to the two blue-haired siblings than her three brothers as Hari’s pinks match well/complement the purple-pink tinted grays seen on the Vestia siblings (more so than with Cabel’s blues and browns or the other boys):
Tumblr media
What could this mean?
Are Hari and Eric meant to be shipped based on their outfits? I vote NO (strongly). Instead, I believe it suggest a kinship that they share which becomes stronger than with the other brothers.
Perhaps the two are “astral twins,” born at the same time but to different parents or perhaps they simply represent a gemini set of paradoxes or conflicting ideas--at least, that would be my theory.
They are twins who aren’t twins and they both, whether they want to admit it or not, have a strong connection that comes across in Chapter 36 as we find the two awake in the middle of the night talking where Eric asks Hari whether she likes Johan or not. It shows their differing opinions on the subject of discussing likes/dislikes and, even though they aren’t in matching outfits, it’s pretty clear that more and more they have a strong mental connection that doesn’t feel inncestrious or sexual.
I really hope that the creator develops more on this, preferably not leading (as the cover image at the top seems to imply) to a harem of brothers. I think a found-family story is much better served when Johan is such a capable romantic lead.
But what are you all thinking? How do you feel about the twins that aren’t twins idea? Let me know!

I know this is going to be a little lazy but do you hsve any gil related crack ship for the ask game? In my case is gil/altera and gil / nero feel free to use this to if you don't have any
I...don't? :0 That's actually...kinda odd. I only mainly ship Gil with Enkidu and Arturia. And of course, in my dearest OT3 dynamic. I generally find it rather difficult to ship him with anyone else because he is just so complicated as a character.
Imma answer for Gil/Nero, but take this with a grain of salt as y'all know how I like to view things from a more serious POV.
Why don't you ship it?
Y'know, technically, I ship this platonically. Like as really good friends, especially because I think they have a commonality in vanity and the showmanship and flair that comes with that quality.
In fact, I think that Gilgamesh and Nero are rather similar in respect to their attitude, but arrive at such a demeanor through different reasons. (Like for example, you add 2 + 2 or multiply 2 x 2 and arrive at the same answer = 4. The answer is the same, but the process is different.) But while similarities can form the basis of a good relationship at times, they can also be cause for a difficult one.
Parallels?
They're so similar when you meet them as Servants. Both prideful to a fault, both haughty, both pretty vain. But the similarities end at surface level, because like I said, they arrive at that state through different means.
Nero's self-assurance (and this is my interpretation of her character) comes from a place of a need for validation. If from no one else, then from herself. Her character and attitude toward her past reflect that, because despite her numerous attempts at winning over the public, it seems she can understand why her people weren't on her side at the end.
Gilgamesh's is sourced in the actual fact that there is none other like him. He was literally the first king. But that aside, as what we know from FZ, he isn't plagued by the same insecurities about his rule as Nero here. Anyway, onto more things they have in common:
They're both selfish lovers.
I'm not sure when exactly but I think Nero does describe her love as being selfish at some point (I'm not a Nero expert), but we can derive that from her lore, because while she gave her best to serve the Romans, she expected their love in return.
Gilgamesh, well, is Gilgamesh. One of his main themes as a character is greed. He is a collector of weapons, treasures, and pleasures. A taker more than a giver.
Combined with the previous analysis, we get a relationship where both parties are expecting "love" from the other, but with a bit of an imbalance. Nero would essentially go through a repeat of her experiences, giving so much love out with a constant expectation that it would be given back tenfold. Gilgamesh (especially the Archer version of him) is in a place where he knows he deserves this kind of love just for being who he is, so to him this behavior is expected. And while a relationship like that could work for a while, eventually Nero is going to want her payout.
What would have made you like it?
I think if they were a little less similar it would be easier for me to ship them together. As it is, they kind of bring the same qualities to the table. They have similar attitudes, a similar fixation (Gil is to "treasure" as Nero is to "beauty"), and even the same red gold color scheme. Nero just has the added attribute of being human, which makes her easier to relate to and to like.
Also, I'm a bit of sucker for either "complementary" or "opposites-attract" type ships, which both require a little more dissonance in character for them to work. And the reason I like such dynamics is because they offer a chance for all the characters involved to improve, develop, and grow through interacting with each other. With Gil and Nero, I don't really see that as much as I see how they could stagnate.
Despite not shipping it, do you have anything positive to say about it?
Like I said I do ship this platonically, and I do believe they have a similar dynamic to Gil and Ozy that just hasn't been explored enough yet. Plus, they have the potential for a lot of comic relief stemming from misunderstandings and a lot of misplaced confidence in their own talents.
I may not be the right writer to explore this particular ship's potential, but there's definitely someone out there who can make this work. :)

“Did your disaster of a dad sweep the librarian off his feet yet?”
Patton sighed and rested his cheek on the palm of his hand. It made his face sort of squished and extra cute. Virgil wished they were having this conversation directly so that he could be the one squishing Patton’s face with his hands.
“Nope! Vee, I swear, they’re worse than we were.”
“That’s really saying something,” Virgil said.
“Do you want to hear something impressive?”
“Anything you say is impressive.”
Patton giggled. “Oh hush, that doesn’t even make sense.”
Virgil shrugged helplessly. “Nothing in this world does, babe, but you sure help make it easier to deal with.”
Patton was turning properly red now and Virgil made a mental note to thank Picani again for the suggestions when he’d expressed wanting to buy a new phone. The camera quality on this one made video calling with Patton even better.
“I said hush!” Patton squeaked. “We’re moving on!”
Virgil just smiled back innocently. “Well, what impressive thing do you have to share?”
“Logan hasn’t gone a single day without complaining.”
That was, actually, pretty impressive.
“Logan? Complaining?”
Patton nodded.
“Never has anything to say about you always mentioning that you’re fifteen minutes older-Logan? Has aced literally every final he’s ever taken without a single whine-Logan? Can sit in traffic for hours and not protest once-Logan?”
Patton nodded, fervently. “I know!”
“Explain,” Virgil demanded, feeling very much like he’d just been deposited into an alternate universe.
“Well, you know how he had a secret sweetheart for, like, ever and we only found out on accident, right?”
“Right.”
“He says Dad’s being ridiculous for pining for so long! Apparently, in the time it took for Logan and his lover to get their feelings sorted out, Dad had only just got Dev’s phone number.”
“You’re having fun with alliteration,” Virgil mused, before continuing. “That…” He paused to process. “Pat, they’re not just worse than us, they’re like… the worst in existence.”
“I don’t know how they do it,” Patton moaned, tilting his head back.
“At this rate, I’m going to visit over break just so that I can lock them in a closet together.”
“And that’s the only reason for you to visit, hmm?”
“Of course,” Virgil answered, solemnly, “not like I got my act together and have a handsome boyfriend that I’d like to spend 7 Minutes in Heaven with, or anything.”
“Virgil!” Patton exclaimed, nearly screeching.
“Yes?”
“I’m hanging up on you now,” Patton threatened.
“You’re impossible to fluster in person. When else am I supposed to snipe you?”
“I’m confiscating the love gun!”
“It’s cute how you think that’ll stop me,” Virgil said, delighting in the way Patton was still pouting.
“Good night!”
And with that, the call ended.
Virgil laughed, switching to their text thread without missing a beat.
stormcloud: love you lots. hope your dreams are as happy as you make me. sunshine: i love u too, u bully, good night!!!!!!!! >:(  sunshine: … sunshine: 💜💙💜💙

“Operation Matchmaker is a go!”
“I am making the executive decision to reject that name immediately.”
“Vetoed.”
“On what grounds?”
“I was born first.”
“By fifteen minutes, that hardly counts.”
“It does, too! It counts fifteen whole times.”
“You realize how little sense that makes, don’t you?”
“It doesn’t have to.”
“And why’s that?”
“Because I’m older!”
“That is not how this works—”
“What are we debating this time, kids?” Roman interrupted, arriving before a full blown argument could start.
“Dad!” The twins chorused, one far more enthusiastic than the other. Then again, one of them had been complaining for the last two weeks of his father’s oblivious pining.
“Patton and I were wondering if you wouldn’t mind driving us today, since you haven’t got anything planned?”
“And just how do you know I’m not busy? I could have many dragons to slay!”
“And princes to swoon over,” Patton mumbled.
Logan elbowed his sibling in the side. “It would be quite efficient to take just the one car out instead of both. However, we all know how much I dislike driving in the snow, and I don’t trust Patton behind the wheel when I know Virgil could call at any moment.”
“Hey!”
“Good point.”
“Hey!”
“And if we leave now, we’ll beat rush hour traffic and be home in time before nightfall.”
“Alright, fine, as long as we’re all good with stopping to get takeout for dinner.”
“That is agreeable.”
“Perfect!”
The trio separated to get their things together. Roman had still been in his pajamas when he happened upon Logan and Patton at the dining table.
They had seemed suspiciously like they were scheming but given it was nearing Christmas, it was safe to assume they were just figuring out gifts. He’d taken care of presents for everyone last month, including Patton’s aforementioned boyfriend. That one had been fun to plan and if everything else went up in flames (as the holidays were sometimes wont to do), he knew that this, at least, would be well worth the work.
Figuring the pair only had a few quick errands to run and that all they’d really expect of him was to keep the car running and warm, Roman went with dressing down for the day. He bundled up in crown patterned sweatpants, a maroon turtleneck, and a black beanie. His hair would not see the light of this day, thank you very much.
“You look comfy!” Patton chirped as they regrouped at the entryway. Their pink pronoun necklace matched the earmuffs and gloves they were wearing; in fact, Patton seemed to have decided on more of a pastel aesthetic than normal today, what with the rest of their outfit in complementary soft shades.
Logan, on the other hand, had gone with his usual and was covered head to toe in navy and black. “Indeed. Do you intend to join us at all or will you be taking self portraits in the car?”
“Ha ha,” Roman deadpanned, shooing his kids outside and locking the door as they left the house.
It wasn’t until they were settled and on the road that Roman thought to actually ask what the plans were.
“What’s on the agenda, then? Gifts? Missing ingredients for cookies? Dropping anything off at Goodwill?” He hadn’t missed the fact that they both had bags, and that they seemed rather full.
“All of the above, actually,” Patton piped up from the backseat. “I wanna donate some of my old plushies and Lo’s got some books he doesn’t need anymore.”
“Patton is in need of vanilla extract and food coloring. I wonder how we could possibly be out.”
“If I don’t make red velvet French toast every morning during holiday break, then what's the point of you being home from college?” Roman asked.
“Quality time spent together, a reprieve from coursework—”
“There is no point!” Patton interrupted. “It’s the best part about being back!”
“Patton, there is no ‘being back’ for you seeing as you do not even live in the dorms. Theoretically, you could have red velvet French toast every morning, regardless of the time of year.”
An offended gasp from his father made sense but to hear it from Patton as well surprised him.
“Blasphemy!” Patton cried.
“The disrespect!” Roman exclaimed.
“That breakfast is tradition, Lo! We’d never have it without you,” Patton promised, clasping Logan’s shoulder and squeezing.
“Thank you,” he responded, voice dripping with sarcasm, “that truly eases my concerns. I was so worried.”
With the streets empty as they were, getting to and from locations took no time at all. Sure enough, Roman waited in the car while Patton and Logan stopped in at the grocery store.
This hadn’t been part of their plan but it was better this way; originally, one would have had to distract him while the other worked. Logan emptied the contents of his backpack, old plastic bags to be recycled, to make room for the pre-ordered bouquet of flowers from the floral department.
“It’s lovely,” Patton gushed to the seasonal employee. “We’re finally gonna get dad to confess his feelings to Dev. It’s been years in the making, they’re both just so clueless. Not that that’s a bad thing!” They hurried to correct while Logan muttered “It really is,” under his breath.
“I think it’s real sweet what you kids are doin’ for your pa,” Valerie said sincerely. “Roman’s been a blessing since I moved out here. I swear, the number of times he’s sighed wistfully during our Disney movie marathons while thinking about that man… I bet the whole town’s rooting for them.”
“It’s a miracle the whole town hasn’t lost their collective mind waiting for one of them to make a move.”
“Logan!” Patton scolded despite looking delighted over their brother being so exasperated that he could hardly be bothered anymore to resist roasting their hopeless father and his crush.
“Well, keep me up to date, won’t you?” Valerie requested, shoving another handful of ribbon into Logan’s bag.
“You bet!”
With the flowers and groceries, not forgotten thanks to Logan, safely secured, they were on to their next stop. Roman denied any teasing of having picked just the right parking spot for prime selfie lighting (not that any of them would have been posted anyway, given his casual look today).
True to their word, Patton stopped in at the local Goodwill and emptied their backpack of stuffed toys and books. If they stopped by the counter to buy something they’d begged be held for them earlier that week, well…
“Darlin’, I dunno how y’all are gonna pull this off.”
“Oh, ye of little faith!” Patton said, running their hands through the purchased scarf to check for any snags or loose threads. “I think I know enough about romance to make it work.”
The snap of Remy’s bubblegum startled Patton into peering up at him.
“You’re joking, right?”
When Patton didn’t answer, Remy reached up and took his sunglasses off. He pointed them right at Patton’s nose, who went slightly cross-eyed trying to focus. “Babes, tell me you’re pullin’ my leg.”
“I’m not!”
“Oh, bless your heart,” Remy cooed, smiling as he perched the eyewear on top of his head. “Honey, romance could be painted on the broad sign of a barn and you’d still miss it.”
“Uhm, hello? Virgil?” Patton replied, as if it were the most obvious thing in the world.
“Planned the cutest prom-posal in the history of prom-posals despite his anxiety after you mistook your first three dates as him trying to get to know Logan better through you.”
“Listen—”
“Yeah? To you yelling at me over the phone about whether or not Virgil kissing you meant he liked you or like-liked you?”
“Remy!” Patton whined.
“I’m just sayin’, sweetie,” Remy relented, “It’s a good thing Logan’s helping.”
Patton huffed, shoving their receipt into the bag. “You’ll still meet us there? You’re kinda important to this going right.”
“Only kinda?” Remy rolled his eyes. “I take offense to that. But yeah, I’ll be there.”
Patton bounced a couple times on their feet, leaning across the counter. Remy couldn’t help grinning as he pressed his lips against their forehead.
“You’ll grow out of that someday.”
“Never!” Patton crowed, backing up and towards the exit. “See you later!”
Patton returned to the car and startled Roman by opening the driver side door.
“I’m afraid we might’ve been a bit dishonest with you,” Logan said, only barely managing to cover smug with sheepish.
“Out, daddio! I’m driving us to the last stop and you get to be blindfolded for it!”  Patton exclaimed, bright and mischievous.
“The betrayal,” Roman cried, unbuckling his seat belt. “And so soon before Christmas, too. Whatever are you surprising me with?”
After some poking and prodding at Patton’s ticklish spots and Patton yanking Roman’s beanie down further over his eyes, they were off. Roman didn’t stop griping the entire way. Logan kept the banter going, texting Remy all the while to make sure everything was going according to plan.
 —
“I’m here, you’re welcome,” Remy called into the break room very obviously marked Employees Only.
“I’ll only be thankful if you brought lunch,” the pile of blankets on the couch replied, muffled.
“Hot soup, hot cocoa, hot tea.”
“Last one’s literal or figurative?”
“Guess you won’t know ‘til you shed.”
“Uuugh.”
The voice groaned the entire length of shrugging the blankets off until they were all gathered around his waist and over his legs.
“Ah, there he is! Dearest dad emerges from his cocoon.”
Devereux glared at his son as Remy crossed the room and set a plastic bag down on the table.
“All I do for you, just to be relentlessly tormented by your sass.”
“I learned from the best,” Remy said seriously, setting up a series of thermoses and tupperware.
“Suck-up.”
The moment Remy was sat beside him, Devereux was ruffling a hand through his hair, tousling the oh-so-meticulously-taken-care-of locks. Remy shouted in outrage, batting his dad’s hand away and scooting to the other end of the couch.
“All I do for you!”
It took nearly a minute of the two glaring at each other, waiting for one to make the next move. When Devereux’s stomach growled noisily, the stalemate ended. Remy smirked.
“Truce?” He offered.
“... Truce.”
They reached for the table at the same time, picking their own containers. Remy grabbed a thermos, no doubt filled with hot coffee. Devereux chose a microwavable bowl and a spoon, cradling it carefully to his chest. Silence followed for awhile longer while Remy texted with one hand and Devereux stared out the window as he ate, scowling slightly when snowflakes started drifting slowly into view.
“A shame I won’t get home tonight,” he grumbled, glaring into his soup.
“And why’s that?” Remy asked distractedly.
“The weather. Too cold. If only you’d look up from your phone and—”
“Okay, boomer.”
“I hate you.”
“I’m telling mom.”
“Who’s she? Never heard of her.”
Remy took an extra loud sip from his drink, maintaining direct eye contact with his dad as he did so.
“I’m sending you to boarding school. Far, far away. You’ll live with your grandparents.”
“No, not the Witch and the Critic,” Remy hissed, actually suddenly nervous.
“They really aren’t that bad,” Devereux said, doing a terrible job of hiding his self-satisfied grin.
“I had to sneak my caffeine in!”
“It would’ve canceled out Grandma’s sleeping spells.”
“Stop that!” Remy shrieked at the same moment his phone started ringing. He glanced at the screen and then back up. “You’re lucky I love you even when you’re being this mean to me.”
Answering the call, Remy set his thermos back on the table and stood up from the couch. “Y’all make it safe?”
Devereux tuned the conversation out as he put his soup down and worked on getting out of his blanket nest. He cleaned up as Remy chatted, thinking about everything that needed to be done before the day was over. Did the grind ever stop? Not that he’d change anything; Remy was the best thing that happened to him, and while the nightmares had seemed unending at the time, life nowadays was a dream come true in comparison. Sure, there was one unattainable fantasy that would be the cherry on top, but he’d learned not to get his hopes up anymore.
“Got something to show you,” Remy said and Devereux supposed he could put up with whatever nonsense was to follow since Remy had brought him lunch.
They headed out into the library, which was relatively empty since school was out for the holidays. That didn’t change the fact that some families simply couldn't handle being cramped in the same house together for long periods of time. Devereux saw all sorts come through for a reprieve from the stress: teenagers with headphones blaring music loud enough that even he could hear it, parents with tense shoulders that appeared worn out no matter the hour, students visiting home that felt out of place after being away, now in need of a break from their discomfort.
Devereux followed Remy to the private study rooms. These were ideal, usually, for finding some peace and quiet, but he had a feeling some sort of havoc was inevitable.
“Eyes closed!” Remy exclaimed suddenly, pivoting. He practically resembled the Cheshire cat.
They had paused in front of room five. The lights were on and the blinds pulled but Devereux could see shadows moving through the slats.
“Might as well get it over with,” he muttered sarcastically, doing as requested.
Several things happened in the next moment.
Remy knocked once on the door and it creaked open. A hand took Devereux’s wrist and yanked him forward, presumably into the room. He collided into something sturdy, though the sound of crinkling plastic sounded less so. Someone erupted into giggles, another muttered “finally,” and then the door slammed shut, and the lock clicked.
“Oh,” squeaked the voice of whoever it was holding Devereux up from falling backwards.
(‘Whoever,’ we say, as if Devereux wasn’t achingly familiar with this voice.)
His eyes flew open and he resisted yelping in alarm. Just so. Roman was stood in front of him, dressed in loungewear, and holding a bouquet of flowers. He was rapidly turning red and he seemed about as confused as Devereux felt. This wouldn’t last long, it never did with the two of them, but it was really just a matter of who would snap out of it first.
“You look exquisite,” Devereux murmured finally, pulling back from Roman just enough that he could brush a hand along his forearm. “As if you’ve just gotten out of bed and yet… still so effortlessly handsome.”
“I can only imagine how divine it’d be to lay with you,” Roman responded smoothly, “though there’s not been created a material that could match your warmth.”
A pause, both realizing what they’d just said.
“Flowers!” Roman exclaimed suddenly, voice cracking, as he stepped away, and thrust the bundle towards Devereux.
“Wonderful,” he coughed, holding them gently, and admiring the colors. “Not nearly as lovely as you, of course, though one could search the ends of the Earth and still nothing would compare.”
“Why, Devereux,” Roman purred, “it sounds almost like you’re calling me the prettiest thing on the planet—”
“Aren’t you?”
“— when in fact, your beauty outmatches that beyond this world. I’d choose still to gaze into your eyes, reminiscent of sweet honey crystallized, even if offered a glittering sea of endless diamond skies.”
… Was it getting hot in this room? Roman looked exceedingly pleased with himself and Devereux cursed the competitive, theatrical streak they shared. There would be no moving from this spot if they continued like this… Not that he had a problem with it. Roman truly was a vision: hair tousled (Devereux could only imagine combing his fingers through the tangled locks), cheeks rosy (what he’d give to cause that blush daily), lips curved in satisfaction (oh, how he’d love to kiss that grin right off his face).
The same moment Devereux glanced upwards, Roman’s gaze flickered down.
‘Interesting,’ thought Devereux, taking note of the little sprig of green pinned to the ceiling.
Their eyes met again, their smiles melting into something softer, more sincere.
“Our kids will be the death of us,” Roman muttered with a resigned sigh.
“Our?” Devereux echoed. “I like the sound of that.”
“Oh,” Roman managed, breathlessly.
Keeping the flowers tucked in the elbow of one arm, Devereux reached forward with his free hand and rested his palm flat against Roman’s chest. His heart was racing. They had that in common.
It was imperceptible, trying to figure out who leaned closer first. The kiss was hesitant to start, years of yearning and pent up passion and fragile feelings. Once the realization hit, that the pining was mutual, that they both wanted this, that they both had been wanting this…
Well, it was a good thing the window to study room five was shuttered.
 —
“Vee, it went perfectly!” Patton screamed into the receiver.
“Uh, yeah, I sure hope it did,” Virgil answered, shifting so that his cellphone stayed firmly between his ear and shoulder, despite Patton’s volume, “given how long they’ve been flirting for.”
Patton went on, gushing about how he and Logan had successfully tricked their dad into driving them to his own trap; how Remy had been instrumental in bribing Devereux with lunch; how they’d unlocked the room to find the pair slow dancing to music playing on Roman’s phone— “A Thousand Years,” covered by Boyce Avenue, they’d discover later.
Had Virgil not been so busy with finals, he surely would have heard the story sooner; it had been just under a week since the set-up and, apparently, Roman and Devereux were, somehow, even more sickeningly affectionate than before.
Not that Virgil would have any room to talk in… He glanced at his watch. The nerves over his flight were replaced quickly by the excited anticipation about seeing Patton in three hours.
“Sweetie?”
“I love you,” Virgil exclaimed suddenly, “just… so much.”
Patton squealed. “Ahh!! I love you too!!”
“Good. That’s… I’m glad. Hey, I gotta email a couple of professors. Talk later?”
“Of course!”
‘Sooner and closer than you think,’ Virgil mused, smiling at his lock screen photo after the call ended. They’d been going through his closet for spring cleaning and despite the silliness at the time, something about seeing Patton wearing his clothes warmed him all the way to the tips of his fingers and toes.
Virgil let his mind wander as he headed through security and to his gate, wondering just what he’d do during his two weeks back home. Attending college a state over was miserable to start but he’d been grateful there’d been one still relatively close, at least, with his stupidly specific major. He hadn’t been able to visit during Fall break and so it’d been an agonizing five months since he’d last hugged Patton, last held his hand, last— okay Virgil calm down before the touch starvation rears its ugly head.
Boarding, thankfully, took no time at all, since it was a smaller flight. The weather stayed mercifully clear and landing went off without a hitch. Grateful that he’d only needed to bring a carry-on and his backpack, he headed passed baggage claim and right for the pick-up zone outside. He was checking his phone to see where Thomas was parked when a body slammed into him from the side. Before he could panic about being attacked or robbed, his brother’s voice was rambling a mile a minute.
“I literally have so much to tell you, I cannot believe how much has happened since you were here last, and look!” Thomas exclaimed, shoving his phone into Virgil’s face. It was a picture of a kitten he didn’t recognize which meant Thomas had adopted another pet. Virgil gave Thomas a deadpan stare as he rattled off all the reasons he’d definitely needed a new cat.
He threw an arm over Virgil’s shoulders and led the way to the car, still gesturing excitedly as he went on about everything that had happened in Virgil’s absence. Apparently, Halloween had seen a jack-o’-lantern carving contest that was all for naught when Remy and Patton switched pumpkins, Logan’s boyfriend got a little knife happy with the picnic table, and Devereux realized halfway through his design that it was too humiliating for anyone else to see and had promptly threw the entire thing against a tree.
“Was it Roman’s face?” Virgil asked, rolling his eyes.
“Joan swears it was but you know them,” Thomas responded.
“Agent of chaos,” Virgil agreed.
Thanksgiving was the same as each year: Roman and the twins, Devereux and Remy, Valerie, Leo, Joan, Talyn, Terrence, Kenny, and Thomas all gathered at the local theatre. Even if any of them did have a house big enough to host a large group, the theatre held so much weight in all of their lives, and felt like the best place to express all the things they were grateful for— namely, each other. They made sure to leave the stage as clean as at the start of dinner, taking care to not leave any stains or scuffs by laying the floor with a plastic tarp. It took a bit of extra work, everyone having to transport their food, but the following games of charades and group improv made it all worth it.
Virgil swore to himself he’d never miss another one again, college be damned.
“No offense to Roman but the twins really got him good,” Thomas was saying as he merged onto the freeway. “They left Goodwill and just drove in circles until Remy let them know he’d made it to the library.”
“The fact that neither of those disaster idiots had even a clue as to what their kids were planning is…” Virgil gestured broadly, as if he could pluck the word out of thin air, “ridiculous.”
“But not unbelievable!” Thomas added. “I think they get blinded by the gay.”
“Yeah, you’re one to talk,” Virgil began but Thomas was slamming the button on the console to turn on the radio, drowning out whatever his brother was planning on saying next.
Virgil just settled into his seat, whistling innocently as Thomas’s face went bright red and Straight No Chaser sang through “The 12 Days of Christmas.”
Making it to the Sanders household took longer than Virgil would have liked but it was three days before Christmas and people were out and about for their last minute shopping. It didn’t help that it had snowed heavily the night before and so traffic was slow moving with everyone driving so carefully.
Still, they arrived before Patton got home, which was the important part. Roman was standing on the porch, waving excitedly as Thomas pulled into the driveway. Virgil glared at the second parked car, recognizing it as Devereux’s, and prayed that Roman didn’t actually have company over. Patton’s surprise was supposed to be known by as few people as possible and the gossip in this town spread fast.
“Welcome home!” Roman exclaimed, yanking Virgil into a hug as soon as he was within arm’s reach.
“Yeah, yeah,” Virgil said back, voice muffled as his face was pressed against Roman’s shoulder. “I’m happy to see you too, don’t get me wrong—”
“I know,” Roman sighed, dramatically, relenting as he let Virgil go and ushered them in from the cold. “I’m not the one you want to be squished by.”
“Shut up!” Virgil spluttered, swatting at Roman as if that would wipe the amused look off his face.
“Oh, there he is!”
Virgil was accosted the next moment. His face was met this time with a leather jacket and all he did in response was groan. Remy eased back but not before gently tugging once on Virgil’s earlobe and then tapping his nose.
“We are way too old for that,” Virgil complained, scowling.
It lasted all of three seconds before he caved, kicking out to tap the tip of his shoe against Remy’s ankle.
“I still stand by that being a stupid handshake,” Devereux said, appearing out of nowhere just as suddenly as his son had.
“Well good thing it’s not a handshake then, huh?” Virgil replied. However, it went mostly unheard as Roman stole Devereux’s attention at the same time, as if they literally hadn’t just been in the kitchen together three minutes ago.
“I hate this already,” Virgil said, taking his phone from his pocket, hoping for a text from Logan to distract him.
Sure enough, the younger of the twins had sent a photo of Patton at the candy store, eyeing a display case filled with fudge. His pronoun necklace stood out against the white of his sweater and matched the violet beanie pulled over his curls… the same one Virgil had left with him the day he had gone off to college. His heart swelled and if he’d been paying any attention, he’d have noticed the picture Remy snuck of him and the absolutely smitten smile on his face.
Thomas clapped his hands, snapping Virgil out of it. “Okay, I’m gonna drive home. Roe’s gonna follow and then bring us back over here. Doesn’t make any sense for me to be hanging out but, not gonna lie, I think the twins would be sus if Roe wasn’t here.”
“Hey!” Roman protested.
“No offense, darling, but he’s not wrong,” Devereux said, smirking.
At Roman’s put out expression, Devereux pressed a quick kiss to his cheek.
Remy and Virgil were staring at each other as if they were each other’s cameras on The Office.
“We got the decorations out earlier,” Remy said, pointing towards the living room.
“Oh thank God, please get me away from them before I get cavities.”
The two ducked out of the entryway where they’d all been gathered since Thomas and Virgil’s arrival. For the most part, the house had already been dressed up for Christmas. The tree was lit, the stockings were hung, and there was one final box left to be unpacked. It’d been left on the coffee table, waiting to be opened and taken care of.
“I forget how sappy you look when you’re thinking about Patton.”
Virgil only gave Remy a rather rude hand gesture in return before lifting the lid off the container. Inside were the ornaments he and Patton had made together over the years. It was a tradition they’d had since before they began dating. Some of them were simple, made out of foam or cardboard and drawn on in marker or glitter glue pens; others were glass or ceramics and decorated with paint or sequins. The one thing they all had in common, though, was the indigo ribbon used to hang the baubles. It was the perfect mix of their favorite colors and needed to be special ordered anytime they ran out. Each one had the year written on it wherever there was space for it. Virgil loved them. Patton loved them so much that he refused to hang any of them without Virgil there to do so with him.
According to Roman, who Virgil really had to thank for making this trip possible, Patton hadn’t even considered touching the box housing the ornaments, since there hadn’t been any guarantee of Virgil making it home for Christmas. Now, though…
“Seriously, Virge, if I didn’t already doubt your dark and edgy exterior, I would be right about now.”
“Shut up, Rem,” Virgil said, laughing.
For awhile longer, the pair just caught up on the last half year. Eventually, Devereux and Thomas returned. Apparently, Patton had gotten chilly and sad (not that he’d admit to that last part but there was no hiding it from his twin), so he and Logan were heading home early. That was all fine and good; they mostly had just needed to get Patton out of the house long enough for Virgil to get home and to bring out the special ornaments.
While Virgil wanted to disagree with Thomas, Remy, and Devereux being there, he couldn’t be mad about having them around to keep him distracted… as long as they were gone before Patton arrived. With Remy sticking around… Virgil doubted it would happen, and he wouldn’t actually be mad if it did, but he was very good at hogging Patton’s attention. Which was hardly fair!
Remy got all the attention he could ever ask for already; admittedly, he and Patton had grown up together, were best friends throughout school, not to mention still living near each other and getting to see each other every day and okay sure, without Remy’s guidance, he was pretty sure that even now, Patton wouldn’t believe that Virgil loved him because no offense, but he could propose and Patton would still ask “as like… friends?”
… Alright, so maybe Virgil couldn’t get mad, pretend or not, at Remy being greedy with Patton’s company. That still didn’t make it fair.
The following thirty minutes were agonizing. Sure, this wasn’t going to be nearly as extra and it wasn’t like Virgil wanted to outdo Roman and Devereux’s confession but also if he could outdo the drama gays (a term coined by the majority of the town, which was really saying something), then he’d have it to hold over Roman’s head for the rest of time, and that sounded pretty cool. In his humble opinion, jumping out and surprising your loved one was way more romantic than being locked in a room with them and hoping everything would go well. Was he sure yet when he’d be jumping out and surprising Patton? Nope! He kind of figured it’d just be something he knew.
“They’re here!” Thomas exclaimed, nearly dropping his phone at the suddenness of receiving the text.
“Get out,” Virgil snapped immediately and unthinkingly at Remy and Devereux.
“Kinda late for that, doll,” Remy said, at least looking a little sorry about it.
“We’ll hide out in the crafts room,” Devereux offered, already pulling Remy down the hallway. Virgil pointedly ignored the kiss he blew in Roman’s direction. He very pointedly ignored Roman catching it.
“You know they’ll see Roe’s car, right?” Thomas prompted, grinning.
“I’m glad you’ve already thought up a reason for them to be here then,” Virgil responded, shooting finger guns at his brother, who started stammering reminders that he was terrible with excuses. Never mind that he was an actor and should have been able to improvise something.
“I’ll handle it,” Roman cut in, patting Thomas on the head, which looked a little ridiculous since they were the same height. “Better get hiding, Virgil.”
He didn’t need to be told twice. Virgil hurried to the kitchen where he proceeded to shove into the storage closet, which had been cleared out just enough for him to cram his scrawny self into. It smelled like various spices which reminded him of last year and baking cinnamon cookies with Patton. He wondered what they’d make this time.
The sound was muffled but the front door opened and shut and… God, how was he supposed to wait long enough to properly surprise his boyfriend? Just hearing Patton’s voice made Virgil want to throw himself into his arms, to kiss him senseless, to hold onto him and never let go. He steadied his breathing by focusing instead on the various scents surrounding him, only half listening to whatever Roman was saying to the twins. The noises got louder as they moved towards the kitchen, probably for Logan and Patton to put away the desserts they’d gone shopping for.
“Thanks for agreeing to help decorate, even if it is just a— a possibility,” Thomas expressed, voice cracking on the last word. Ugh, he really never had learned how to lie.
“The odds of Virgil actually being able to visit are quite low, Patton,” Logan was saying, “I just don’t want your hopes to get up too high.” Wow. Were they even trying to be subtle?
“I know that!” Patton exclaimed and Virgil was sure he was flapping his hands. “Imagine if he could, though! What if he showed up on Christmas Eve, oh, that would be so magical!”
This certainly wasn’t as magical as it could have been but Virgil was sure he’d explode if he waited a second longer. So as soon as it started to sound like the trio was heading back out, Virgil nudged the door open with his foot. It creaked and he winced. No doubt having peaked Patton’s curiosity, Virgil threw the door open the rest of the way, and practically launched himself at his boyfriend’s back.
Patton, for good reason, screamed.
The arms locked around his neck now, however, allowed him to see the hands clasped over his chest. Purple nail polish. A black ring on the middle finger of the right hand. An old friendship bracelet hanging loosely from the wrist.
Patton screamed again.
“Virgil!”
If asked, neither could guess how long they stayed embraced for. Patton was laughing breathlessly into Virgil’s shoulder, muttering his name over and over, sprinkling in the occasional “I love you.” Virgil couldn’t have stopped combing his hand through Patton’s hair even if he wanted to.
Eventually, they would separate, but only just enough so that Patton could pepper kisses all over Virgil’s face. There might have even been a couple minutes of just gazing at each other, soaking up the mere presence and warmth of the one they loved so dearly.
Of course, they weren’t really alone which meant the reunion had to end at some point. The house was still full of nosy siblings and parents, after all. So, when Remy came crashing into the kitchen, shouting about how bored he was, neither Virgil nor Patton were all that surprised. He stole Patton away, claiming they had to do something really quick and insisting that Virgil catch up with Logan in the meantime.
“Hey, L,” Virgil said, greeting Logan with a signature two finger salute.
“Nice to see you again, Virgil. How was your semester?”
They chatted about college, and their respective majors, and any hall mates from hell. Without really realizing it, they got into making a large batch of hot chocolate for everyone while they talked. Each mug was picked especially for its recipient, as well as the various ingredients added to each one. Virgil dropped a peppermint stick into his, added extra marshmallows to Patton’s, and a generous spoonful of caramel sauce for Thomas.
With Roman’s help, all the drinks were brought out safely to the living room. Devereux seemed to have dozed off in the recliner closest to the fireplace. Thomas was nowhere to be found, so Virgil assumed he’d been roped into whatever nonsense Remy and Patton were up to.
“So,” Virgil started, settling into the corner of the couch. “Did I outdo the drama gays?”
“Absolutely not,” Roman responded vehemently.
“Virgil!” Patton shouted suddenly, appearing from the hallway, carrying a bag. “Honey, oh my god.”
Patton shot an apologetic look towards Devereux, who was stirring from his nap, as he hurried towards Virgil. He threw himself onto the couch next to his boyfriend and abandoned the package in favor of grabbing onto Virgil’s arm.
“Earlier, you…” He paused, giggling. “You came out of the pantry.”
Logan groaned.
Virgil blinked, slightly bewildered, before he started laughing, too. “Yeah. Yeah, I guess I did.”
“I have something for you,” Patton continued, retrieving the present. He shoved it into Virgil’s lap.
“Christmas isn’t for another three days?”
“Yes, and?”
Thomas, who had just arrived with Remy, snorted. “As if you’ve ever had the patience to wait until the actual day to start opening your gifts.”
While Virgil pestered Patton about not needing to get him anything, really, Remy and Thomas fought over the last armchair, and eventually just ended up tangled together on it. Logan rolled his eyes at their stubbornness.
After some insisting from Patton, Virgil pulled out all of the colored tissue paper. Patton proceeded to ball it up and throw it at Remy, whose complaining got progressively louder, until his dad finally tossed a pillow at him with a grumbled “please shut up.” Roman settled on the arm of Devereux’s recliner with the most adoring look in his eyes and carded a hand through his hair, whispering sweetly to him.
“Oh,” Virgil gasped, momentarily losing himself in sensory bliss at the material he’d just got his hands on.
Patton wiggled, patting Virgil’s knees excitedly. It was the very same scarf he’d bought from Remy barely a week ago. It was black which meant it’d go with anything in Virgil’s wardrobe or with whatever outfit Patton decided to wear should he steal borrow it from him.
“Try it!” Patton said, moving the rest of the wrapping out of the way.
Looping it around his neck provided Virgil the realization that it was of an infinity scarf, which meant all sorts of different ways to wear it. Would he still just bundle it up to hide his face in it as much as possible? Probably.
“It’s so soft,” Virgil murmured, rubbing the fabric against his cheek.
“Cashmere,” Remy piped up. “You’re welcome.”
Patton leaned in, waiting with bright, hopeful eyes. “Do you like it?”
“Like it?” Virgil huffed, failing spectacularly at downplaying his delight. “I love it. Thank you.”
If a person could embody !!!, then Patton would be doing a very good job of it. He surged forward, catching Virgil by surprise with the intensity of the kiss. One hand cradled his face while the other clutched at the scarf, using it to pull him closer. Smiling against Patton’s lips, Virgil couldn’t help but think that this was very much something he’d like to have for the rest of his life.
Later, they would hang up their personal ornaments. Tomorrow, they would work on making new ones. The holidays would only continue to get more magical as the years passed, he was sure of it, and honestly? He was really looking forward to it.

OKAY SO RANT TIME
Tbh this feels like JK Rowling all over again. I had been a huge fan of HP and I used to look up to her. I mean as an aspiring author, she was the ideal, she's richer than the queen ffs. But then as I grew up I read more and more stuff about her and I lost faith, I found out that she was transphobic, a terf, and that it went further than that. Her allegories and writing were nonsensical and offensive. And that realization HURT. I felt betrayed and disregarded as a member of the lgbt+ community. Now I feel like that's happening again with RWBY. I've been a fan of this show for SO LONG it's made an immense impact on my life. I've been a fan since the beginning, but now as I read more and more, I become more and more disappointed. The way they've handled Fairgame is just... insulting. As a writer I understand that sometimes you have to kill off a character. Shocking I know.
HOWEVER EVERY CHARACTER DEATH HAS TO BE HANDLED WITH CARE. Even if Clover wasn't HEAVILY implied to be gay and have an interest in Qrow and he was as unimportant as CRWB wants us to think, his death has to be handled with care. In order to make a death matter, you have to make the audience care. However in making them care you have to pay attention to the promises you have made.
The whole reason that this is such a big deal is because of some key mistakes that could have been easily avoided.
The crew encouraged the ship outside of the show and had several instances of seeming to ship the characters.
Don't actually write the characters with flirty interactions. They deny this over and over, but they did. They know how to write characters. They've had SEVEN volumes to figure it out. They could have easily avoided that. Sure people probably would still have shipped them, but they would at least have some defense instead of "oh we didn't intend that" yes you did don't lie. That's just insulting.
Don't tailor the character design to mirror Qrow's. Several things about Clover's character design mirror Qrow. The color scheme that matches Qrow's aura, the complementary eye colors, etc. Color has always been extremely important in RWBY and they can't just deny that they didn't know what they were doing.
Speaking of color, the background of Clover's death scene being a Bi pride flag was just uncalled for and just plain insulting.
Also the parallels between Fairgame, Renora and Bumblb. The truck scene being framed very similarly, the expressions, the body language and the tone of voice. All screamed romance.
The "lucky you" callback.
The similarities of style in these two frames (sorry)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This is the first time we've ever seen Qrow cry.
The unnecessary brutality of Clover's death. This is literally the most gruesome scene in RWBY so far, and Yang had her arm cut off.
The unapologetic and insulting way the writers have handled the backlash.
THIS IS ALL WITHOUT EVEN TOUCHING ON HOW OOC BOTH QROW AND CLOVER WERE THROUGHOUT THAT FIGHT BUT WHATEVER.
I could keep going with Fairgame, but tbh I want to talk about why it feels like JK Rowling.
Number one, Bumblb, technically while it has been built up for so long and been pushed and had a romantic undertones and is basically cannon, it isn't. There still has yet to be an explicitly romantic moment on screen. There hasn't been an "I love you" or a kiss or anything. Therefore it still technically isn't cannon.
Two May Marigold. She has had about two lines total on screen. And the only reason we know she's trans is because someone confirmed it OFF SCREEN. On Twitter. Therefore if you only watch the show (with is completely fair) you wouldn't even know. AND SHE IS THE FIRST TRANS CHARACTER. You cannot do that to a group of people with such little representation. Especially when movies like A*am are still being made.
And that brings us back to Fairgame.
I feel betrayed and led on. When I first watched the episode and saw some of the discorse unfold, I was incredibly conflicted. I defended CRWB and if you scroll far back enough in my blog you can probably see that. But like I said, the more I read the more anger I felt about the situation.
Would I be mad if it were only Fairgame, yes.
Would I be THIS mad if it were only Fairgame, no.
Will I continue to watch the show, probably. However I am thoroughly disappointed and angry. I will demand an explanation and I will demand better in the future. I have lost a significant amount of trust and respect for CRWB which is ironic, because this volume is completely centered around trust.
CRWB, you are better than this.

unpopular opinion, funpoison is bad because it's often a surrogate for the ship-which-shall-not-be-named, which sucks because when it's done right I really enjoy it. It's messy and poison and ghoul fight a lot but to me its about loving each other despite all that, and overcoming it and working through their problems together. It's about burning too bright and burning out too fast. Also you can pry the complementary colors schemes from my cold dead hands
yeah! just like oz was saying, there is a way to make it work lmao. i dont like the fighting thing much because nearly every time i’ve seen it they’ve been fucking horrible to each other constantly, and all their good moments are in the make-up, and they immediately go back to being fucking horrible. toxic ass relationship. like if u can’t think of a relationship as anything other than fighting and makeup sex you have a skewed idea of romanticism.

Seddm, how are you? I hope you are fine with everything that is happening in the world, but my question is why do you think Starco was so popular? Everyone felt related to him, or did they all feel related to Star and Tom? The only bad thing about Starco is that He started the season 4 prisipio and dedicated all season 4 to that ship
Cute interactions and dynamics since the beginning, huge focus on them during the first two seasons, well matched design and complementary personalities and color schemes, lots of hugging and physical contact, “best friends to lovers” trope at full power, frequent emotional intimacy, living in the same house and then castle being a good source for any kind of domestic headcanon... guess these might be the most common reasons. Also, while I’m generalizing and it obviously wasn’t always the case, I’d say that a good chunk of Starco shippers ship them for the sake of the characters, or because they identify with its core themes, while among Tomstar and Jarco shippers it was more common to find apparent cases of self-inserting with Star or Marco, respectively, making such ships closer, in a small but still visible percentage of cases, to “I have the hots for this character and I want to vicariously date them by inserting in a protagonist” rather that a simpler “I want this characters to kiss”.
Granted that all and any kind of preference and subjective taste ultimately stems from what one likes and wants and from what they can relate to, obviously.
