alias / name: saro / shelby
pronouns: she/her
birthday: october 6th
zodiac sign:  libra
height:   5'4
hobbies:   reading, writing, studying, listening to podcasts, buying things i don't need, feeling like i have too many things i want to do but not having enough to do them so i end up doing none of the things?
favorite color: i am incapable of answering this question as it changes at least once daily. (looking at my current wardrobe, you would think it's pink but honestly i'm kind of in a pastel yellow mood today)
favorite book: i refuse to answer this with just one so i'll just share some of the few i make it a point to reread every year. the thief lord by cornelia funke is a middle grade standalone that inspired my love of reading in the first place. the artemis fowl series by eoin colfer is my favorite series of all time. poison by chris wooding is a super underrated, short, whimsical but kind of dark fantasy/fairy tle vibe standalone. the a court of thorns and roses series by sarah j maas. howl's moving castle by dianna wynne jones
last song:   won't let go by fivefold.
last film / show:  i watched howl's moving castle (film) before bed last night and finished pokemon origins this morning (show)
recent reads:  the last unicorn by peter s. beagle (thanks to @aamaranthiine for giving me the motivation to read this, i loved it!), currently re-reading the night circus by erin morgenstern, go the distance from that set of disney villain retellings.
inspiration:  i think i take the most inspiration out of my favorite tropes i feel were done well in my favorite series? and song lyrics - but there's a bit of a disconnect here as i've recently discovered i cannot listen to music (even instrumental) and be creative at the same time. honestly, just reading in general, which reminds me of how words work and the wonderful things authors, roleplayers, all the writers out there can do with them!
story behind url: i wanted something to do with "in shambles" and played around with some translations on it until i found one that clicked!
fun fact about me: i love learning things, and if i ever won the lottery or found myself in a position to never worry about money again, i wouldn't work, but i would stay enrolled in school throughout my life pursuing as many degrees as possible.
tagging: @aamaranthiine, @infloresco, @wishmcker, @ncfertari, & anyone else who wants to!

Tumblr media
Well, I have begun a reread- at least of the first three, I’ve decided, as these are my favorites- with the current goal being to finish Book 1 by Christmas (so it lines up!). I’ll jot down any thoughts I have as I go along. Probably won’t be many to start, however, I love the first book dearly but of the first three I find it personally the least interesting.
First thing I wanted to note (cause it’s fun) is that the most recent US covers are lovely, I really like the vibrant colors and the less ‘painterly’ style. Feels very fun. I initially read the books back when they still had these covers:
Tumblr media
And while still lovely, not nearly as colorful! I do like how Artemis actually looks more like a 12-year old here, however- I know it describes often how Artemis appears almost like a small adult, but I think it hits harder when he appears his age. Then again that’s probably just easier to pull off when it’s a painted style. But that’s just me- onto Chapter 1!
- The first is that both the intro and outro, as I recall, were written by a fairy- specifically, Dr. Argon. Seemingly insignificant now, and I’ll make more of a point on this later, but the way he writes both paints a very interesting picture of how the People continually view Artemis with a very, very narrow lens given both his criminal nature and his status as a ‘mud man’, making such claims as Artemis solely having Holly heal his mother to get CPS off of his back. I also bring it up for another point I may want to discuss later- the fairies were indeed aware that Artemis was a child. They may not have known the specifics of such (as fairies age differently), but they acknowledged that Artemis was still young enough that his mother being ill and unable to care for him would attract the attention of Social Services. This makes their actions in this book feel a little… extreme, ngl, particularly when they have such technology as mind-wipes at their disposal.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Anyways, onto the first chapter! A handful of interesting things:
Tumblr media
- Artemis’s various degrees of genius are each focused on in turn throughout the series, from his technological skill to his vast pool of scientific + historical knowledge, but I think by and large the ability that would have served him best up to this point (and in future encounters) would be his ability to read people like an open book. Something that would have been interesting would be this same manner of picking apart an individual failing when he is first presented with the subject of The People, with their mannerisms being different than that of a human. He would therefore have to hone this skill all over again throughout his encounters. Idk, I just think it’s interesting.
Tumblr media
- (Nothing major to add here I just think this is funny given the amount of ridiculous adventures Artemis would drag Butler along for later)
Tumblr media
- This is just something that caught my eye and has now left me wondering- given that the Fowls are presented as very big names in the criminal underworld (as well as just… in general), how well-known was it what happened to The Fowl Star? A boat intentionally sunk between Ireland and Russia is an incident that would have made the news, I’m sure, and been likely discussed among fellow criminals, especially with everything largely falling to Artemis to manage.
Tumblr media
- This last point is technically from Chapter 2 but I wanted to note it in particular, because this is something I don’t see often brought up in discussions both regarding Artemis himself and his parents’ ability to keep track of him later (though I will largely leave such discussions for another post, if ever- I’d hate to start some kind of disagreement). Artemis himself ferociously guards his independence. He does so many, many times throughout the books, both from his parents and Butler himself, later down the line. Artemis, being a child who suddenly had such freedom thrown upon him by circumstance, lacks the ability to see the steep downsides of said independence, using it (especially from TAI onwards) to throw himself into danger- granted, usually because he feels he has to, but it’s still a point of note. He uses any trick he has, including magic, to keep his loved ones in the dark with regards to his whereabouts/dealings with not only The People, but other criminals. This isn’t something that magically sprang up from nowhere upon his parents’ return due to finding their sudden attention overbearing- this has been something he has acknowledged and accounted for since day one.
And with that, I’ve finished Chapter 1 and begun Chapter 2. It feels really good to read these books again, I’ve missed them dearly.

Six of Crows
Tumblr media
4/5 stars
After two years (ish) I have finally finished Six of Crows. Uh, that is not to say that I really sat there and read page after page for years. What I really mean is that I borrowed the library book, tried to read it, but got bored midway. My brain was really tired of its world-building, among other things. I also tried to read an e-copy of it but that was met with spectacular failure. So I stopped trying for ages.
Anyway. Fast forward about a year or so and I have started reading fantasy books, heralded by my obsession with Cruel Prince (though Serpent and the Wings of Night is technically what started it). NOW, I tell myself, I'm ready for SoC. It's been sitting pretty on my TBR-fantasy shelf ever since I started reading fantasy again.
I don't know if the past months of reading fantasy books have kind of equipped my brain for its world-building or something, because this time, chapters are much, much easier to digest. I'm actually following what's going on. Maybe my attention span is also a bit better.
Whatever it is, it gets me through the first chapter (which was… kind of a weak opening, but that's just me), and soon enough I'm storming through the subsequent ones.
I have so many thoughts about this book. My enjoyment level was kind of tumultuous—I went from hesitant to really enjoying the banter to getting a bit bored at certain parts once they broke out of the prison, then felt my enjoyment (hmm… maybe engagement is a better word) picking up again when Nina encountered Brum. I was screaming, it's a trap! But she fell for it anyway.
I'm generally not very good with stories that are setting-heavy—meaning a lot of the plot circles around navigating through places and secret bridges and tunnels and so on. And for a heist, it is so important to know what the setting is like and how they work around it. So I won't lie; parts of my brain switched off a little at certain stages. I will need to do a reread on those sections to better figure out what's happening, like how swimming through the water led Kaz, Matthedious—as I like to call him—and Nina out to the other side. I mean, I think I know, but I was very tired at that point so I still wanna reread to be sure.
I also was not a huge fan of the flashback dump in the middle of the story. Nina, after healing Inej? Flashback! Matthedious, brooding in the boat? Flashback!
I think flashbacks could do better when it fits the plot—like Kaz fainting because of too much physical contact and then getting his flashback on what caused it was much more fitting on Leigh's part, imo.
So my biggest two issues are the placement of flashbacks and the heaviness on setting, but I 100% know the latter is my problem, so the former is technically my only valid point.
NOW—to what I enjoyed.
The characters are great. I think the standout is obviously Kaz, who is my favourite character and who reminds me a lot of Artemis Fowl, but minus the techno stuff and assuming he was thrown into the Grishaverse. He's just terrific and I've always been a fan of smart, manipulative characters that are shown, not told, and there were definitely a lot of both here. But the telling was supported by the showing, which I so, so appreciate because this is not as common as it should be.
Inej is my second favourite, tied with Wylan. That bitch is a motherfucking QUEEN, and she is just *chef's kiss*. Strong but not invulnerable, and also her not staying for Kaz in Ketterdam because she didn't care for anything less than what she deserved is EVERYTHING to me. I'm not sure what to make of her piety, though, but it plays off on Kaz nicely. Wylan, I just am partial to because I have a thing for soft boys with puppy faces and curly hair. And also I think he has a lot of potential which I hope will be explored in the next book.
Also, Kaz roasting him SENT ME:
Tumblr media
I'm fine with Jesper. He's all right. I didn't see the Fabrikator twist coming though. I was like, WHAT??
Now. For the characters who weren't all right for me; they range from I'm-not-sure-how-to-feel to pure dislike. Nina is the former, and based on my nickname for the last Crow, I think you can guess who's the latter.
I just do not understand Nina. Even until now I don't really have a full grasp of her character. At the beginning, she seems to really dislike Kaz's lack of moral fibre, based off her exchange with him:
Tumblr media
But then not too long later, this happens:
Tumblr media
I am just so confused by her, and while I was gasping aloud when she took the drug at the end to save everyone (made me respect her a lot), I still don't know what kind of person Nina is. She feels all over the place.
I don't even want to talk about Matthedious. He's a man laden with prejudices and toxic masculinity, which, to be fair, is shaped by his upbringing, but he's just very narrow-minded and stupid. Anything he can't understand, he dubs them as witch, or demon, and so on. He's just an angry oaf. I don't know what to say. There's really nothing much to say about him, though I do want to add that his character arc was extremely unconvincing for me.
A plot point I really enjoyed in this book: Jesper using his Fabrikator skills on that diamond and Wylan building a drill with said diamond, then Inej breaking in to take that tank. Love that she got revenge on Heleen in that moment, and also JUST LOVE THE TRIO for using all their skills as a team. I did not see the tank infiltration coming at all, and it was awesomeeeee.
Another plot point, however, made me go, UHHHH:
Tumblr media
KAZ. 🤢
Overall, a solid book. I loved most of the banter, though there are a few times when it falls flat. I was about to rate the story 3 stars midway through, but the later half really picked up and saved it for me. Also what is with that ending? To be fair, I did think it'd be too good to be true if they got the money, but I didn't expect Queen Inej to be taken?????
I'll probably start on Crooked Kingdom soon,  but who's to say? I just hope I won't start it two years (ish) later.

Book Unhaul 2022 edition
I know it’s probably weird to start off what’s mainly gonna be a book review blog with a book unhaul but I thought it would be a good way to introduce myself with a glimpse of what I like and don’t like in literature in a way.
so here’s my book unhaul
Tumblr media
How I purge/unhaul books
If I tried to read a book but end up DNFing it multiple times
has troupes/characters I don’t really like
Read it before and liked it but better off without it
Don’t have the same tastes that I had when I brought the book/out grew the genre/not in the demographic
doesn’t have reread ability
never got the completed series
doesn't have sentimental value
Why I purged each book on the list
(from top to bottom)
The Hunt For Red October- Tom Clancy
Brought it after watching the Amazon Prime adaption of the character (only managed to watch season 1 tho)
tried to read it twice DNFed it both times
I know the military jargon is needed but I realized to late how much I more or less zoned out during the jargon and I kept trying to skip to the action and Jack Ryan’s POV in my second reading
pace was way too slow for me
The Extraordinaries Series (book 1 The Extraordinaries & 2 Flash Fire)- TJ Klune
DNFed by the 50th page
I didn’t like the MC was more cringy and annoying
I liked the side characters more
Cool premise but MC killed it tho
I still read YA but this wasn’t for me but I can imagine 15-16 yr old me would have liked it
I regret not reading a few pages before I brought the first book along with the second at the same time
Crazy Rich Asians series (book 1 Crazy Rich Asians & 2 China Rich Girlfriend)-Kevin Kwan
Brought them a few years ago around the time the first book’s movie adaptation came out
reread the first book a bit ago and DNFed it because I realized I don’t really like the problematic characters and drama anymore
overall out grew the two
The Infernal Devices: ClockWork Angel- Cassandra Clare
Finished reading the series a few years ago by reading the books available in the school library
I know I won’t buy the rest of that edition anymore and don’t find myself wanting to reread the book and series unless I manage to find the books in a library
Artemis Fowl: The Arctic Incident- Eoin Colfer
read part of the series back in middle school
Got this copy years ago from the stack of books my High school librarian had purged from the library’s collection
definitely won’t read it and doesn’t hold value for me
but I remember the series being a fun series to read
Harry Potter & The Cursed Child-  J. K. Rowling, Jack Thorne, and John Tiffany
Doesn't hold value anymore for me
I love Harry Potter but Cursed child is meh
But JK can choke for obvious reasons
The Dark Artifices: Lady Midnight- Cassandra Clare
DNFed it a couple of times but managed to read it completely a few years ago
Felt like the MCs were copy and pastes of Clary and Jace but tweaked a bit and made them childhood friends
side characters were more interesting than the MCs
least favorite troupe used was miscommunication/not communicating at all (don't get me wrong I can read a book with the troupe but it needs to get resolved eventually)
I’m pretty sure I zoned out while reading most of it so I lost the plot a couple of times
The 5th Wave series (book 1 The 5th Wave & 2 The Infinite Sea)- Rick Yancey
Dont remember it wtf was going on
Read it once and meh
do remember there’s a love triangle for some reason
The Darkest Minds- Alexandra Bracken
Had the book for a while but DNFed it once and never tried to picked it back up again
Interesting plot but slow pace killed it tho
Dork Diaries: Tales from a Not-so-popular Party Girl- Rachel Renée Russell
Had this for years since I was in middle school I think
I literally outgrew the demographic for it and just kept it around and its been collecting dust
still remember it being a fun read when I was a kid
A Whole New World: A Twisted Tale- Elizabeth J. Braswell
Had it for years but Never read it but picked it up when I brought Reflection: A twisted Tale which was a take on Mulan
probably never read it because I don’t really have a emotional attachment and relate to Aladdin and Jasmine like I do with Mulan
Its been sitting there and collecting dust
Percy Jackson & The Olympians: The Titan’s Curse & The Battle of the Labyrinth- Rick Riordan
I love this series but I read copies of the books from the library growing so my personal collection of PJO isn’t complete (planning to get a whole edition of the series eventually)
I still have the rest of the Riordanverse books
Before I Wake- Dee Henderson
Also Got this years ago from the stack of books my old High school librarian had purged from the library’s collection
was planning on reading it but never have and never picture myself reading it
What If It’s Us-Becky Albertalli and Adam Silvera
DNFed it
brought it years ago because I read Simon Vs the Homo sapiens Agenda and Leah on the Offbeat
Plot was cute until Miscommunication (from what I remember)
Overall these are just my opinions and reviews so take them with a grain of salt, Bye!!

2. Second hand or brand new?
Both? Both is good. I tend to opt for brand new most often because I'm either looking for a specific book or nothing jumps out at me in the used book selection. A lot of the used fiction I come across is romance or murder mystery, and I'm very picky with both those genres (comparatively speaking)
3. What is your current recommendation for anyone looking for something to read?
The Mortal Magic series by Jackbird Lee (link to the first book here). The first two books are out, fast-paced reads under 200 pages. It's a gay harem paranormal romance series (I'd also include magical realism personally), and I literally couldn't put either book down. It felt like a comfort read that I knew by heart on my first read. Like oh my gosh, everything about it was just so so good.
4. Go to genre on a rainy night?
Honestly? Fanfiction XD But in published book genres, I love fantasy. I was a Redwall kid growing up, moved on to LOTR and Dragonlance, and still have an obscene amount of vampire and werewolf romance ebooks of questionable quality.
5. The book you can finish and then immediately start again without hesitation?
I don't really have many of those. I like marinating the stories I read after I finish them. BUT I do remember finishing The School for Good and Evil by Soman Chainani and immediately rereading it back in middle school, so that one I guess :D
12. A book you want to see made into a TV show/movie (or, if its already been adapted but you didn’t like it, what you’d do differently)
I have Opinions on the Artemis Fowl movie. Like why did they smoosh like half the series' plot-lines into less than 2 hours? The first book had plenty of drama and material tyvm
16. Old book smell or new book feel?
I don't notice either? Like I really have to stick my nose in a book to get that book smell and I've never heard of/thought about a new book feel
17. What is the oldest book you own?
I have a copy of the Count of Monte Cristo from the 1930s I believe. And apparently, a copy of Le Malade Imaginaire by Moliere, copyright 1905 and preface dated 1904- that was a surprise to discover this evening.
18. Last book you purchased and why?
So, I think the last book I personally purchased was Pickup Notes by Jane Lebak (also a good read imo) which was for a reading challenge. Equal odds it was JRR Tolkien Myth, Morality, and Religion by Richard Purtill which was a spec-buy because I like Tolkien and my major is Religious Studies so like... why not?

20 Questions - Writer’s Edition
Tagged by @lambourngb thank you! 💗
1. How many works do you have on AO3?
81 total, mostly Les Mis and RNM.
2. What's your total AO3 word count?
1,557,760 holy shit I’ve written over a million words 😵
3. How many fandoms have you written for and what are they?
On AO3, not counting the universes I’ve written fusions with, there are seven: Les Mis, Roswell New Mexico, Merlin, MCU, Young Avengers, X-Men, and Vikings.
On ff.net, nine more: Teen Titans, Xiaolin Showdown, Transformers, Naruto, Narnia, Hellboy, Artemis Fowl, Lord of the Flies, and Skins.
Some fics are on both, but when I moved to AO3 I mostly left the ones I didn’t think were good enough to expose to a new audience. And gone from the internet forever (probably) is the Maximum Ride fanfic I wrote and posted to a forum back in the day. RIP that fic.
4. What are your top 5 fics by kudos?
from one side to the other (Les Mis, exr soulmate oneshot)
sentimental you and faithful me (Les Mis, exr bodyswap oneshot)
Just Another Guy With A Bow (Avengers, Clint/Coulson, Clint origin fic)
potentially lovely, perpetually human (Les Mis, exr empath!Enjolras)
This brave new world’s not like yesterday (Les Mis, exr the bowling alley fic)
5. What's the fic you've written with the angstiest ending?
If there’s a rocket, tie me to it is one of the first Les Mis fics I wrote, and it’s uhhhh very canon in that everyone dies. In my head it was kind of a partner fic to <a pattern in the system> A Bullet In The Gun, which was also a dystopia fic, but that one had a happy ending, and I wanted to go again and have the canon ending for Les Amis. And I think that might have been the last unhappy ending I ever wrote? I like happier endings way better!
6. What's the fic you've written with the happiest ending?
Basically all of them have happy endings, especially the long ones that actually have plots! But I’m going to pick Finding You, because I skidded canon to the left to force events into happiness before tragedy could ever strike, and spun that out into a nice long roadtrip with lots of happiness and love and friendship, ending on a great big optimistic note that everyone’s future would be just as happy and unstruck by tragedy. I reread chunks of this fic all the time for the good vibes.
7. Do you write crossovers? If so, what is the craziest one you've written?
I’ve written a bunch of fusions, but I think the only one that actually counts as a crossover is Fighting the Hurricane, which is a Les Mis/Pacific Rim fic. I’m not sure if my Les Mis/Oglaf fic is a crossover or a fusion, but it’s definitely the craziest one I’ve written just because Oglaf itself is so off the wall - Sharpshooter.
8. Do you write smut? If so, what kind?
I looooooove writing smut, of all kinds. I’ve written a lot of bdsm smut in particular for Les Mis, and weirdly almost none for RNM, idk what that’s about.
9. Do you respond to comments, why or why not?
I usually do these days, though on multi-chap fics if I’m posting a chapter a day or similarly quickly, I’ll wait and reply only the last chapter. I didn’t used to reply to comments at all unless they were particularly stand-out or asked a question, which was following the example of other writers, more than anything else. I also had the notion that people do sometimes use the number of comments on a fic as a metric to judge whether to give it a go or not, and replies massively skew that count.
I reply now, or try to. Um, confused widgeon, if you’re reading this, I’m sorry I haven’t replied to your comments from July 2020 yet. They were too nice and I got overwhelmed. One day I’ll get to them!
10. Have you ever received hate on a fic?
Lol yes, I was weirdly pleased and immediately deleted it.
11. Have you ever had a fic stolen?
Not as far as I know.
12. Have you ever had a fic translated?
I’ve had a couple of people ask about it before, but idk if it went anywhere.
13. Have you ever co-written a fic before?
I co-wrote very bad Transformers fic with my best friend in secondary school and we had a great time. Shout out @scythling! Since then though, no. I’m too precious over creative control, I think, and I quite like writing in a vacuum.
14. What's your all time favourite ship to write for?
Of all time is tricky. Enjolras/Grantaire will have to take the trophy though, I think. They’re iconic!
15. What's a WIP that you want to finish but don't think you ever will?
I have a bunch I’ve abandoned and accepted that I’ve abandoned, too many to list, so I’m not counting those because I know I’m never finishing them. Of the ones that are still in my WIP folders...there are also too many to list, but only a handful I’d be sad about never coming back to. I think the main one is probably Underground Dreaming, which would be very difficult to finish for multiple reasons, the main one being that I always envisioned it as open-ended. But I am sad that I stalled out on posting more than a few fics in that series. Too much research can kill the muse!
16. What are your writing strengths?
Dialogue and spooky atmospheres. Love me a spooky atmosphere.
17. What are your writing weaknesses?
I use ‘grinned’ way too much. Dialogue tags in general, but ‘grinned’ in particular. And I’ve developed a real problem with length, where I’ve become almost incapable of writing short fic. Which isn’t necessarily bad, exactly - length is needed for some of the stories I want to tell, but being concise isn’t something that comes naturally to me anymore.
18. What are your thoughts on writing dialogue in other languages in a fic?
Language barriers are one of my favourite things to write, actually, but because I’m very much not fluent in anything but English, I shy away from putting in actual words from other languages. I’d much rather have a whole exchange or speech in another language actually written all in English, with the difference indicated either by outright saying the character/s are speaking in another language or by altering the grammar and sentence structure.
19. What was the first fandom you wrote for?
Either Teen Titans or Xiaolin Showdown.
20. What's your favourite fic you've written?
Shadow Work is something I’m going to be proud of till I die, probably.
I think a lot of people have already been tagged so uhhhhhh if you haven’t done it already or want to @beautifulcheat @sugarfey @im-the-punk-who @gritkitty @maeglinthebold @daughterofelros @dotsayers

Part one of my Artemis fowl memes for book 6! Basically I'm rereading the Artemis fowl books and making memes as I go because why not.
you can find all the ones I made for book 1-5 right here they're seperated by book and nicely organized all on one post
All the memes

----------------------------------------------------------
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I love the twins. I haven't read the fowl twins yet, I probably will after I finish rereading the artemis fowl series but I heard artemis yeets himself off to mars and that makes me sad cause I just really wanted to see how these three were with each other and how they worked off of one another. Plus I wanted to see some sibling bonding and seeing artemis just being the tired older brother to these two crazy children
----------------------------------------------------------
Tumblr media
Also I know in my last post I already talked about how artemis just suddenly became a big brother two two toddlers, this boy who never interacted with kids even as a child and had no peers or close relatives was suddenly a big brother to two toddlers, how he basically just came back one day after being gone for a few minutes (remember that for artemis it had only been a few minutes) and his parents were just like "here's two toddlers, they're you're brother's now :)" like it's crazy and such a huge change in his life but I'm still annoyed by how it's never addressed, and not just for him but for the twins too, the two were just home one day when some teenager came into the house and their parents and bodyguard/crazy uncle were like "this is your crazy older brother. He lives with you now :)" and the two just had to accept this and artemis was just kind of like "ok... I guess I have two brothers now? Um... I know I'll randomly teach them weird ass specific lessons and program their toys to speak and respond to them! That's what older brothers do right?" And the twins just had to accept this crazy person entering their lives. Like they each just burst into the other's lives and it's never addressed and we never see how the three reacted to this or how the transition was and I really wish their had been. Also how do they view eachother? Another reason I'm sad artemis isn't in the fowl twins, cause artemis would've randomly showed up in their lives but he was much older and he had his own life so I doubt he interacted a lot with them plus he then goes off to mars the second he can so like, they wouldn't have a regular sibling relationship I think.
Tumblr media
Also artemis painted with them and got himself covered in paint even though he hates getting messy and that's really cute and I just really want to see someone draw that cause it's adorable.
Anyway I'm sorry for my mini rant about the twins back to your regularly scheduled memes.

Literally anyone in the world who's seen the news in the past 3 years: can you tell us why you went missing for 3 years? Where did you go? Why didn't you age at all??

Seriously! I was reading this and had to reread it cause holly legit just opened the window, came in and then closed the window again? And only artemis noticed?? At least butler I can excuse as him guessing it's holly so choosing not to say anything but what about artemis sr? How do you not notice your window opening and closing by itself when you're in a quiet room with only two other people? Also love how holly took the time to close it again, especially considering that would draw more attention to the window and her and to the fact that it's moving by itself.

finished rereading the artemis fowl series and thinking about how crazy it is. like i’m coming back to it as a young adult, but i feel the excitement that twelve-year-old me felt. i still lost my mind at the “and I hunt you” scene. root.
one thing that i was able to resolve was the romance between artemis and holly. in my 12 year old, the kiss was way more significant, and when i read the books again now, i was like THANK GOD it was just a passing thing in a very weird circumstance and not looked at again. their friendship is so fucken great and hated to think it had been reduced to some weird pedophilia because bOyS aNd GirLS caN’t bE fRienDs.
also realised that i love love love the plot of the first 4 books, but after that i’m just there for the shit talking and audacity. book 8 feels a bit wonky to me, but it’s a decent ending so i won’t get to into it.
i refuuuuuse to read the Fowl Twins because i know i’m not the target audience, and i don’t want to constantly compare to my childhood favourite, but i sincerely hope that a new gen of kids of getting fairy-human shenanigans and enjoying it.
haha, i went on the tag and saw trans!artemis content and???? i can’t unsee it. he’s trans in my headcanons now :)
i could talk about all the main ensemble at length, and the impact of colfer’s style of writing on my own, but what i just wanted to say is that:
i read most of these books years ago, borrowed from a boy in my class, and then i bought the last book for myself, and i fell in love with the universe and the characters and saw myself in them. and now, i get to read my own copies and revisit scenes that have been imprinted in my head, and i’m very grateful that these books exist.

Okay sooo i need that you give a list of all for favorite books. I need to read the books that you (one of my favorites fanfic writers) love the most. Dont be shy and break my tbr sweatheart
Haha, I’m weird in that I read allll the time, but actually finishing books? Rare.
So my list of favorite books is actually pretty short:
Ender’s Game and the whole Enderverse.  I’ve only not read The Swarm, Children of the Fleet, and The Hive because they came out while I was in grad school / after I finished and I need to go back and reread everything in the series IMO before I read them, and there’s 20 books in that series xD.  I think my favorite in the series is Ender’s Shadow and Earth Unaware. Both can actually be read as first books, since they are the first in their own series within the overall universe. Although Ender’s Game is probably best to read before Ender’s Shadow, just because then you understand who Ender is. I got my username from Shadows in Flight.
Eragon and the Inheritance Cycle. The third book, Brisingr, is my favorite.
The Hunger Games. I’m still mad about Gale.
Artemis Fowl. I haven’t read the final two books in the series, but I loved the series as a kid/teenager. There’s a line in the Opal Deception that reads something like: “I’m going to make clones of you so I can kill you over and over” that I still find hilarious.
The Thief. I just read this a few months ago, and I’m half way through the second book because... I do that. I need to just skip to the third because people say it’s the best in the series. I really loved the first, though. It was so unique and I loved the storytelling.
Left Behind, the kids. This has been a favorite series of mine since I was a teenager, but I’ll admit, I tried to reread it recently and was like... wow this is so bad. LOL. I’m putting it here because when I read it I legit was obsessed, and we went on vacation while I was reading it so I brought three of the series (there’s like 10?) with me thinking it would be enough, and it very wasn’t, and the one I got stuck on until we got home ended with a gun being pointed at one of the characters and wow. Traumatized. Most miserable vacation ever. I’ve also tried to read the original series, and could never get into it. I should try it again, although I’ve read other of Jenkins’ books and am just underwhelmed by his writing.  I read the Soon Series, and even as a young college student my criticism of it was ‘interesting plot, terrible execution’ so. 😂. That’s all christian fiction as far as I can tell, though. I tried to read 49th Mystic for my church’s bookclub (I kept complaining at the group that I don’t read BS christian non-fiction that’s just some person being like ‘hey look at how righteous I am here’s a bunch of stories of my life’ and so I NEVER read the book for group, so they picked this one so I would read it since it’s christian fiction, and then I tried and was like this is so bad no. 😂). Hey if you want to read a REALLY overrated Christian Non-fiction book and fume about it with me, read Love Does by Bob Goff. I haaaate that book, it’s all about a guy being a stubborn jackass and then being like “See! I got everything I want!! Because I’m such a good Christian and God loves me!!!” :)
And yeah. That’s it. There are tons of books on my shelf I read and enjoyed, but I wouldn’t put them on my ‘favorites’ list, and will probably never read again for this reason or that. Like The Fault in Our Stars, The Maze Runner, the Soon Series, the Kite Runner, One Word Kill etc. LIke I said, I tend to half read books and stop right in the middle for this reason or that. I have literally dozens of books on my shelves like that. 😂. I also have about 100 non-fiction books on my shelf that I’ve read.... because I’m a historian. But I’ll leave those out. ha.  If you want to read a popular history book, try Manhunt: The 12-day hunt for Lincoln’s Killer or Killer Angels. Both are fictionalized retellings of events during the civil war and I enjoyed both, even though I kind of detest that time period, but that’s more because I used to work at a civil war park as a tour guide in Georgia and it got So Tiring. I way prefer early American history. lol

multiples of 5 for the book asks?
What is your ultimate favourite book? Answered here Favourite authors? Ted Dekker, Maggie Stiefvater, C.S. Lewis, Laini Taylor, Adrienne Rich, Sylvia Plath, Lauren DeStefano, Scott Westerfeld, Jennifer L. Armentrout, John Green... A reading habit you could get "canceled" for? Oh, man, idk, are we talking things like "I don't finish books I can't get into and sometimes leave series unfinished and don't feel guilty about it" or like "I read and enjoy stories that depict unhealthy relationships sometimes" caliber? A book series you can't wait to read. Answered here How about favourite reading snacks? Answered here If you could have access to anybody's bookshelf, dead or alive, which person would you pick? Answered here, but I'll also say my bud C.S. Lewis Favourite romance novel? Impossible by Nancy Werlin! I can't say enough how much I love love love that book. Least favourite book to movie/TV show adaptation? The PJO movies were a massive disappointment, of course, although the first movie would have been good if it wasn't trying to be PJO. The Voyage of the Dawn Treader adaptation was a huge disappointment partly because of how excellent the preceding movies were, plus that's my favorite book in the series. Favourite book villian? Oh, man, I don't know! I've read some really great villians, the kind that you love to hate and the kind with great redemption arcs and the ones you find out aren't really villians at all... Anyway, I just scanned my bookshelves, and the one I landed on was The House of the Scorpion, which remains a mindblowing favorite even 15+ years after I first read it. Anyway, El Patrón is such an interesting villian because he really isn't present for the majority of the book, it's all in his looming reputation and legacy. And Matteo, our plucky protag, doesn't see him as a villain at first: he's larger than life, and in fact, for Matteo, the source of life, literal and all kinds of figurative. But as Matt learns more about what it means to be a clone, the way that things work in Opium, and the way El Patrón treated people and ruled with an iron fist - his perception begins to change. And then, as the camera angle moves wider and we see more of the world around Matt, around and outside of Opium, the reader comes to realize that El Patrón is really just a symptom of a bigger societal rot. Plus, his charm is still real, he's benevolent in comparison to many - he's evil, but also complex! Gah, I think I need to reread The House of the Scorpion AGAIN... and probably actually buy the sequel, because it was surprisingly good for a book that came 13 years after its predecessor. Best book cover? Answered here If you could have any book related job in the world (librarian, editor, publisher, writer, etc), what job would you pick? Answered here Talk about books! Anything you like, maybe share some more recs<3 I'm going to my favorite secondhand bookshop tonight, because one of my favorite little people just turned 10 this week and I get her and her sister books for almost every birthday (plus a toy or earrings or craft kits or whatever). I think I'm going to get her the first Artemis Fowl book, or maybe Harriet the Spy, or... I can't pick, there are too many good options now that she's just getting to the right reading level for some of the easier middle grade stuff!

Do you have a favourite Irish writer?
Happy St Patrick’s Day! Let’s celebrate some Irish literature.
It was a happy coincidence that I started rereading Artemis Fowl by Eoin Colfer yesterday. I loved this book when I was younger and I read a couple of the sequels. I don’t think that I got very far though. I guess I just grew out of them.
I’ve been meaning to go back to the series again, especially since the film came out. It’s been 20 years since the first books came out, so what better time to go back to it? I still haven’t seen the film. I’ll probably give it a go once I’ve finished reading. I didn’t want it to destroy my memories of the book. Potentially ruin my childhood.
As for the answer to my question, I guess the Irish writer I’ve read most if probably Oscar Wilde. Does that mean he’s my favourite? Although, there have been plenty of great female writers in the past few years that I’m very excited by. Sally Rooney and Naoise Dolan are both brilliant.

Thank 2 @piyo-13 for this wonderful food
Tumblr media
1- Sophie Hatter (Howl’s Moving Castle)
She is my perennial fav. I loved her in the Ghibli movie but I stanned her in the book. Trying to explain why I love her so much has to be its own post lmao
Tumblr media
2- Haleth (The Silmarillion)
Idk what it is about her but the combo of ‘warrior lady, famous friendship, leader in her community’ just hits smth in me. art credit @dakkun39.
Tumblr media
3- MianMian (MDZS/CQL)
I’m gay and hate the establishment of injustice
Tumblr media
4- Saphira (Eragon)
I’m exposing one my my earliest obsessions here lol. I haven’t reread the books in a while but I straight up never paid attention in 7th grade history I was either reading Twilight or Eragon/Eldest. Big Lizard Is My Oldest Friend.
Tumblr media
5- Holly Short (Artemis Fowl)
I didn’t start reading Artemis Fowl until high school and disclaimer I never finished the series bc college. I love how she’s really her own protagonist and not just the other half of a Holly & Artemis duo. Also the comic design is my stickiest idea for how she looks but She’s Brown Motherfuckers
Tumblr media
6- Amanda Grayson (Star Trek)
SPACE. MOM. God I fucking love her and hate JJA for having the audacity to fridge her. Did you know she was on the team that invented the Universal Translator? Did you know she got all kinds of shit for entering one of the first interspecies marriages and replied to rude journos with dick jokes??? Did you know she is my role model and alien lover Idol?
Tumblr media
7- Usagi Tsukino (Sailor Moon)
Ok in my adulthood I know I’m more like Makoto/Jupiter (tall girl LIGHTNING abnormal femininity) but Usagi is just made of kid me dreams. Moon princess magical girl destiny child long blonde hair flowy dress and cool style true love and group of best friends forever.
Tumblr media

Tumblr media
10- Noriko Tachiki (Kanata Kara/From Far Away)
One of my best friends recced me this series years ago and I’m still mildly obsessed with it lmao. I am an absolute FOOL for “female lead gets transported thru time/into fantasy world”. She’s got romance, cool outfits, language learning finesse and unshakeable drive in the face of danger. I wish I could find more isekai like Kanata Kara and Red River and Fushigi Yuugi.
This list is in no particular order lmao. Honorable mentions go to: Furiosa (MMFR), Yuri Suzuki (Red River), Amy Dyer (In The Flesh), Adora (She-Ra 2018), Yoo Eun Soo and Queek Nogook (Faith)
EDIT: forgot to tag ppl lmaoo. Calling out @wifihunters, @mosshermit, @daydreamingaquarius and @beyondtheeluvian

Fic Rec Bingo
Tumblr media
Okie dokie, this is the Fan Rec Bingo - idea courtesy of lightvials on twitter, but I don’t have a twitter that I ever use, so I’m filling it out here instead.  Let’s see if I can fill it all out!
I did, and then some.  To save poor dashboards, it’s all under the cut!  If I know author tumblrs they’ve been mentioned - I know pitifully few so if anyone knows the ones I don’t, let me know so I can mention them, too!
A fic you love without knowing the source material: The Dragon-King’s Temple by Kyral (Stargate SG-1/Avatar the Last Airbender)
Through the spite of the spirits or plain rotten chance, a door that would have been better left untouched has opened. On the other hand, with Fire and Earth as one's allies, sometimes escaping is the easy part. Rated: Gen.  AO3 Archive Warning for Graphic Descriptions of Violence. Characters: Zuko, Toph Beifong, Janet Fraiser, Sam Carter, Jack O’Neill, and more Words: 196311.  Status: Complete
I very rarely read fics without already knowing the canon, but one that I think counts would be a Stargate/ATLA crossover, because I know nothing about Stargate and I have yet to finish ATLA!  This was recommended to me due to the creativity of the author regarding a language barrier (something I always enjoy, and my friend knows that).
---
A fic series with a premise that shouldn’t work but it does: Crazy=Genius by blackkat (Bleach/Harry Potter)
Minerva McGonagall isn't about to let Harry go back to the Dursleys after his first year. She finds an alternative, and along the way, Bazzard Black finds that he might have more family left than he'd ever thought. Rated: Teen.  AO3 No Archive Warnings Apply Characters: Bazz-B, Harry Potter, and more Words: 21682.  Status: Incomplete
Okay, I cheated and picked a series.  Not my fault blackkat decided to make this universe a series of oneshots rather than a single entity and you’re certainly not getting me to only pick one of the five already published ones.  Bazz-B being a Black and also kinda a wizard is a brilliant concept, and having him adopting Harry is pure gold.  Not sure how crazy Quincy adopting poor, neglected Boy Who Lives works, but it does!
---
A fic you’ve reread several times: The Guardian (Director’s Cut) by SGTBrowncoat (Naruto)
Itachi Uchiha receives his first mission in ANBU: protecting a certain trouble making Jinchuriki. He bonds quickly with the boy, but dark forces rise to threaten Itachi, Naruto, and those they care for most. Rated: T.  Canon-typical violence Characters: Uchiha Itachi, Uzumaki Naruto, Uchiha Shisui and more (includes Uchiha Itachi/Inuzuka Hana background pairing) Words: 35945.  Status: Complete
Back to my first ever fandom, here, and a really fun non-massacre AU fic, with lots of Itachi and Shisui goodness.  There are a fair few ANBU-looking-after-kid-Naruto fics but this is by far my favourite of them!  There is a sequel, but unfortunately it’s not finished and hasn’t been updated in a long time (I live in hope!)
---
A fic you still remember many years later: While The Ring Went South by Thundera Tiger (Lord of the Rings)
What happened after the Fellowship left Rivendell but before they came down off Caradhras? Behold the missing scenes. Rated: K+.  Canon-typical violence Characters: Legolas, Gimli, Aragon, Gandalf, the whole Fellowship Words: 149624.  Status: Complete
I refound this fic completely by accident the other week, after first reading it (according to when I favourited it on FFN) in 2011!  It was just as amazing as I remembered, and is really the standard I hold all other LotR fics to, especially ones that involve the entire, pre-Moria, Fellowship.  It has a sequel but sadly that’s not been updated in some time (but again, I live in hope!)
---
A comfort fic: There May Be Some Collateral Damage by metisket (Bleach/Harry Potter)
Ichigo’s been ordered to go undercover at a magic school to bodyguard a kid named Harry Potter, and this would be fine, except that he’s about as good at bodyguarding as he is at magic. And he considers it a good day, magic-wise, if he hasn’t set anything on fire. Rated: Gen.  AO3 No Archive Warnings Apply Characters: Kurosaki Ichigo, Harry Potter, Weasley Twins, and more. Words: 61209.  Status: Complete
I have no idea what this means by ‘Comfort Fic’ but if I want a laugh and Umbridge getting a pile of comeuppance, this is definitely the fic I’ll turn to.  As the A/N says: ‘sending Ichigo to Hogwarts is basically the same as swinging a wrecking ball directly into the side of the castle’.  Beautiful chaos is what we get.  Beautiful, beautiful chaos.
---
A cathartic fic: See You Again by cookietosser (One Piece)
Rocinante has been through a lot in his life. Adding uncontrollable time travel into the mix? That's just the icing on the cake. Rated: Teen.  AO3 Violence and (canon) Character Death Warnings Characters: Donquioxte Rocinante|Cora-san, Trafalgar Law, Heart Pirates Words: 15755.  Status: Complete
You want to rip my heart out and trample it into lots of little pieces while still making it all better because Law and Rocinante?  Well, this little time-traveller’s wife AU fic is just the one for all that.  Sad moments, frustrating moments, happy moments, all wrapped up in this oneshot!
---
A fic you’d print and put on your bookshelf: Thrower of the Dart by Vathara (Artemis Fowl/The Avengers)
What might have happened instead of Artemis Fowl book 6, if it'd happened in the Marvel Universe. Megalomaniacs ahoy! Rated: Teen.  AO3 No Archive Warnings Characters: Artemis Fowl II, Tony Stark, and more Words: 101272.  Status: Complete
It’s long, it’s epic, and it would nestle in perfectly at home alongside my Artemis Fowl books on the bookshelf!  It’s not so much a rewrite of book 6 as a complete replacement of it, with a new plot and an all too familiar villain!
---
A fic you associate with a song: Goodbye, Brother by Serena Estelle (Bleach)
Ilforte's final moments as I like to picture them-with his brother. Rated: T.  Canonical character death Characters: Szayelaporro Granz, Yylfordt Granz Words: 3073.  Status: Complete
Might be cheating, because the author actually names a song in their starting A/N, but this definitely brings to mind Exile Vilify by The National, and I fully recommend listening to that (on loop - there is a 10-hour loop version on youtube) as you watch this for maximum tear-jerking effect.
---
A fic that inspires you: Magic of the Rose Cross by Awensweth (Harry Potter/D.Gray-Man)
In Harry's 4th year the Triwizard Tournament is brought back to live, but the appearance of a fourth mysterious school about which only Dumbledore seems to know brings new secrets with it for everyone. Who are the students of Rose Cross? Rated: Mature.  AO3 Chose Not To Use Warnings Characters: Harry Potter, Allen Walker, and more Words: 66632.  Status: Incomplete
I have been inspired by many, many fics, but I chose this one in particular because it was the main one that inspired me to join the HP/DGM Triwizard Tournament wave of the early 2010s - indeed, The Combat School is one of my most popular fics, but without this and other fics of the trope, I probably would never have written it!  That’s not to say I’ve copied this fic - aside from the base trope I tried my best to make my own work unique against the others, and hope that I succeeded!  Sadly, this fic is incomplete and hasn’t been updated for some time, but it’s still worth a read.
---
A fic that brought you on board a new ship:  Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell by MsChunks (Boku no Hero Academia)
Uraraka and Bakugo have a secret. It’s not what their classmates think it is. Rated: Teen.  AO3 Chose Not To Use Warnings Characters: Bakugo Katsuki, Uraraka Ochako Words: 182478.  Status: Complete
Putting Bakugo and Uraraka together was something I’d never considered, and I started this fic with some trepidation after a friend recommended it to me, but said friend has never steered me wrong with fics and didn’t start now!  Fake dating, Uraraka actually being badass, the most terrifying couple in class 1-A?  That’s this fic.
---
A fic you wish could be a movie: Mission Impossible by Loopstagirl (Thunderbirds)
Being selected for his first solo mission should have been exciting for Captain Scott Tracy of the Air Force. But there was something else at play. Something dangerous and deadly. Something that could cost him more than his life. Rating: T.  Warnings: Violence Characters: Scott Tracy, Gordon Tracy Words: 55048.  Status: Complete
Air Force!Scott?  W.A.S.P.!Gordon?  On a joint mission together?  Yes, gimme, gimme, gimme.  Gimme Scott’s awkwardness alone on a boat of WASP personnel, gimme Gordon’s horror when he realises the suicide mission pilot is his older brother, and now give that all to me on screen!  And we can’t forget the Hood, of course!  Might be a bit higher rating than the current Thunderbirds stuff, but hey, I’m old enough.  Gimme.
---
A fic that led to you becoming friends with the author: The Gabriel Project by Aceidia (Bleach)  - @thetwelvecaesars
When Szayelaporro knew Aizen's reign in Heuco Mundo was coming to a close, he took matters into his own brilliant hands. He reincarnates himself and the other nine Espadas into a new life full of surprising turns and irony. Yet, the harmony and ignorance is not forever as they begin to remember. Rating: M (violence) Characters: Szayelaporro Granz, the Espada Words: 116030.  Status: Complete
Well, this fic sparked off a friendship that’s still very much there, even if neither of us write much for Bleach any more!  What started off as a challenge to identify who the Espada were turned into essay-length PMs about anything and everything, and then RP groups and now random emails about whatever at random times of the day (different timezones don’t help)!
---
A fic you’ve gushed about irl: Living Like Kings by CLynnB (Thunderbirds)
The world wants to know more about the Tracy brothers. So Lady Penelope takes it upon herself to show the world just who they are. Through YouTube. Rating: Gen.  AO3 Author Chose Not To Use Warnings Characters: Lady Penelope-Creighton-Ward, Tracy Family (background Pen/Ink, Scayo, Virg/Brains) Words: 35348.  Status: Complete
I love social media fics like this one, and my poor boyfriend got the brunt of it while we were on holiday... he knows basically nothing about Thunderbirds except for what he’s heard from me (which is a lot because he’s amazing and lets me gush).  I mean, Tracy boys playing “The Floor Is Lava?” and tackling each other to the ground?  Gimme.
---
A fic you associate with a place: Thunderbirds Meet Thunderbirds - Alan trip in to the movie verse by ak47stylegirl (Thunderbirds) @ak47stylegirl
Crazy stuff always happens to Tracys, don't they?  Add felling into a different world to the list. Rating: Gen. AO3 No Archive Warnings Characters: Alan Tracy, Tracy Family times two Words: 25599.  Status: Incomplete
This might be a little random, but this fic was one that I found while I was ill on holiday to the Lake District last autumn.  Sadly, it’s the only trip there I’ve ever done where I couldn’t climb a single fell (and my car’s clutch burnt out after having to reverse up a pass... thanks bus coming the other way), and this fic’s updates while I was there kept me sane!  This has actually very loosely inspired a fic of my own which is in the making - which might get posted in the next year if I’m lucky...  Still waiting eagerly for this fic’s next update :D
---
A fic that made you gasp out loud: The Colours Of The World by MaiKusakabe (Fullmetal Alchemist/Harry Potter)
When Roy Mustang went to retrieve his eyesight from Truth, he wasn’t expecting to end up doing a job in exchange. It couldn’t even be an easy job, of course, because Edward’s assessment of Truth was a pretty accurate one. Rating: Mature.  AO3 No Archive Warnings (but watch for canon-typical violence) Characters: Roy Mustang, Albus Dumbledore, Sirius Black, and more Words: 120578.  Status: Incomplete
Badass Roy yesss.  Twists and turns and Truth is a pretentious you-know-what but Voldemort’s even worse so where does that leave poor Roy except caught in the middle and very much a war veteran at this point... much to the horror of a few wizards!
---
A fic you found at the right time: Seafaring Heartless: Exit North Blue by Avian Swallow (One Piece)
Pirates may be considered evil by the majority, but Law had met quite a few of the world's navy who were corrupt to the core and putting up a very thick facade. He reasoned that if he was going to manipulate and scheme his way into that goal, at least he was going to be honest enough to admit it. Rating: T.  Canon-typical situations Characters: Trafalgar Law, Bepo, Penguin, Shachi, Heart Pirate OCs Words: 159644.  Status: Complete
Is there ever a ‘wrong time’ to find a fic?  (a 100k+ at 4am debatable, but shh).  When I craved Heart Pirate content, this fic (and its sequel, still in progress but updating) appeared!  Only loosely clings to canon at the moment, thanks to some SBS revelations, but with well developed OCs to fill the faces we have no names or personalities for at the moment!
---
A fic that you would read fic of: Only a Boy by Riddle Lee (Harry Potter/Merlin)
Merlin has changed Camelot forever but while that part of his life is complete, destiny has a new task for him. Now he has to attend Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, hide the fact that he's the Merlin, and defeat a Dark Lord that's messing with magic he knows nothing about. Rating: T.  Canon-typical situations Characters: Merlin, Draco Malfoy, Hermione Granger, and more Words: 340998.  Status: Incomplete
An amazing universe with Slytherin!Merlin, no Harry Potter/Boy Who Lived, and the good old ‘hiding real identity’ trope to underpin the whole series.  Currently just into the start of Merlin’s third year at Hogwarts, aka “The Prisoner of Azkaban”.  This universe has so much to give, although Riddle Lee is doing a fantastic job at it.  It’s incomplete and slow to update but does update!
---
A fic that made you laugh out loud: HOW’S THE COMA GOING by ossicle (One Piece)
Kidd and Penguin keep trying to murder each other and Law is done with their shit. He assigns them to take care of each other’s injuries so they’ll learn to get along. It doesn’t work. Rating: Teen.  AO3 No Archive Warnings Characters: Eustass Kid, Penguin, Trafalgar Law (background KidLaw) Words: 2062.  Status: Complete
Oh this one had me in stitches basically the whole time.  Kid’s bedside manner should not be mimicked in the slightest, but a beautiful bonding fic in typical pirate fashion - beat ‘em up ‘til they have your approval.  Poor, poor, Law.
---
A fic with a line (or two) that you’ve memorised by heart: On Their Side by Gumnut (Thunderbirds) - @gumnut-logic
She trusted these boys with a great deal. Rating: Teen.  AO3 No Warnings Apply Characters: Colonel Casey, Virgil Tracy, Gordon Tracy Words: 1116.  Status: Complete
I think I have basically the entire thing memorised.  This one also falls into several other categories, most notably ones that made me laugh and ones that I’ve reread several times, but it really belongs here on this list.
---
A fic that gave you butterflies: it’s a long way forward so trust in me by aloneintherain (Miraculous Ladybug)
Six times Marinette carried Adrien (plus one time he carried her). Rating: Teen.  AO3 No Archive Warnings Characters: Adrien Agreste|Chat Noir, Marinette Dupain-Cheng|Ladybug (all sides of the love square) Words: 5611.  Status: Complete
Aaah I have a weak spot for strong!Marinette and this fic ticks that box time and time again, with a side of blushing!Adrien and general love-struck Adrien/Chat.  I mean, what more could a girl need?
---
A fic that embodies something you value in life: Team Itachi by Killer of thy Cookies (Naruto)
What if the Third Hokage stopped the council before they could order Itachi to commit the Uchiha Clan Massacre? Itachi is one of the village's strongest ninja, and has now been given the task of being a Jonin sensei, assigned to Team 7 with his little brother Sasuke, the 'dead last' Naruto Uzumaki, and fangirl Sakura Haruno. This is Team Itachi. Rating: T.  Canon-typical situations Characters: Uchiha Itachi, Uchiha Sasuke, Uzumaki Naruto, Haruno Sakura, and more Words: 155092.  Status: Complete
(Yup, another non-massacre AU.)  Loyalty.  Honestly, there are so many fics that have loyalty in them, especially in fandoms like Naruto, where loyalty is a pretty big thing anyway (alongside friendship, of course), but this one is Itachi staying openly loyal to the village because Sarutobi actually saved the clan, and of course lovely bonds between the team!
---
A favourite AU: A Son By Any Other Name by carryonstarkid (Thunderbirds)
Cursed as a child, Scott Tracy lives a life in which everyone he encounters must follow all of his given commands. Rating: Teen.  AO3 Chose Not To Use Warnings Characters: Scott Tracy, Tracy Brothers, Kayo Kyrano, and more Words: 83429.  Status: Complete
I rarely read AU fics - my preferred sandbox is the canon one, or a nice slice of canon diversion, rather than completely taking characters out of their home and dumping them somewhere entirely new.  This fairytale AU, however - reminding me very much of Sleeping Beauty except instead of sleeping it’s, well, what the summary says - is fantastically well done and addresses the strain such a thing would put on even the closest of family relationships.
---
A fic you stayed up too late to finish reading: As N Approaches Infinity by Corisanna (Bleach/Puella Magi Madoka Magica)
Despairing as yet another timeline goes horribly wrong, Homura wanders into Karakura. There she discovers that while the spiritually-aware people of Karakura were distracted by Ichigo Kurosaki and Xcution, Kyubey had managed to contract the Kurosaki sisters as magical girls. Drawing the attention of the shinigami could be just the advantage Homura needs. Rating: Teen.  AO3 No Archive Warnings but watch out for canon-typical situations for both fandoms (especially Madoka) Characters: Akemi Homura, Kurosaki Karin, Kurosaki Yuzu, Urahara Kisuke, and many more Words: 465297.  Status: Incomplete
There are many fanfictions that have kept me up til dawn.  Many.  This one, however, has literally robbed me of all my sleep and I’ve still been unable to finish it in one sitting.  It’s good, the pacing is fantastic, and with Homura as our leading lady, that means those time resets really hit hard when they happen (and they happen.  They really, really, happen).  Might be incomplete, but is still updating - and there’s plenty to keep you occupied in the meantime!

A fic that made you feel seen: A Seed Once Grown by Darkestwolfx (Thunderbirds) - @darkestwolfx
Believe it or not, they did have a garden on Tracy Island. It looked a little like a… tip. And that was being kind. Rating: Teen.  AO3 No Archive Warnings Characters: Ned Tedford, Tracy Family Words: 4785.  Status: Complete
Okay, so I’m taking this literally because I spend a lot of time feeling invisible on the internet so having a fic written for me from someone I’d barely spoken to before was a whole pile of screaming.  Not that it’s the first time someone’s written a fic for me, but the other ones have been done by friends I’d already known for some time, and not someone in a fandom I’m just starting to find my feet in.

Free space: whoo boy, fun time!  There are a few fics on the top of my head that didn’t fill any of the above prompts (or got beaten to the punch by another), so my wildcard space is going to be a few fic links without the extra detail because I’ve already spent about 12 hours on this to get to this point (did I get sidetracked and re-read a bunch?  You bet) and I’d quite like to also get some fic written today, too!

yes! though some of these are rereads.
the artemis fowl books hold up very well, even now, though i haven’t finished the entire series just yet. i have one more to read (reread? i’m not too sure about the final one in the series), but it really is a good series.
(let artemis say fuck! except not actually, since it is a childrens’ series.)
then the midnight lie was very good, and i haven’t seen anyone talking about it? it’s ya fantasy with VERY messy lesbians and interesting worldbuilding, and i’m absolutely going to reread it when the next one comes out.
the whole old kingdom series by garth nix blew me the fuck away. i reread sabriel last year, but only read the rest of the books in the series for the first time this year. it’s, yet again, ya fantasy, but it’s SO good. if you’re looking for a dark-but-not-grimdark series to sink your teeth into, i’d absolutely recommend it!
also, harrow the ninth. i had high expectations for harrow the ninth, having finished gideon the ninth recently before it came out, and tamsyn just. took those expectations, ground them down to pulp and shards of bone meal and marrow, threw them into a long-dead sun, then slapped me and called me a pussy for not expecting something even better than i’d hoped. 😔✌️ LIKE. I DON’T WANT TO OVERHYPE IT. but GOD i love those books.
then, lastly, the daughter of smoke and bone trilogy by laini taylor. i hadn’t read them in quite a while, but i wanted to reread them after falling in love with strange the dreamer last year! and honestly? they’re VERY good. the character development... god. chef’s kiss. again: ya fantasy, this time with what seems like a predictable brooding dark antihero romance.
(spoiler, maybe: it’s really not. it’s messy, and good, and yet again—CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT. god i love laini taylor.)

Usually, I never reread a book. For the main reason that I already know the story and I don’t want to waste my time to read what I already know. I prefer to discover the most stories possible and devour everything possible to devour.
So I never reread a book.
I only know if I adored it or hated it.
But.
I just reread « Chaos Walking » first volume. I already read it few years ago in french and I wanted to read it again before they release the movie.
And I realized something.
I never remember what I read.
Just a feeling, sometimes one particular scene, sometimes a name. But it’s impossible to remember what I read. Rereading « Chaos Walking » I realized I didn’t even remember the name of the main characters of the books which kept me in suspense for days, even if this meant going to bed late, waiting impatiently for the next book… for a week (I was borrowing them from the public library).
I devour books, and it makes me a little sad, because I wonder if I really enjoy my readings, if I savour them, if I don’t read just to read. I see on the web wonderful pictures, amazing fan-arts of scenes I wasn’t able to imagine.
I turn frantically the pages, close the book one last time with a feeling of completeness. I finish one and proceed to the next.
I devour books… and on the other hand I think it’s neat. I’m not afraid to move forward, to turn the pages, to discover new worlds and new people, even if this means forgetting them and retrieving them another day.
Of course I want to remember them. Ewilan, Artemis, Alina, Lyra, Mathilda, the Baudelaires, Percy, Césarine, Tobie, Arthur… I want to tattoo their adventures directly on my skin, to remind me everything they learnt to me, and how much they made me live, travel, laugh or cry.
And I proceed to the next.
In the end, it’s a beautiful life philosophy. That pieces of paper always surprise me.
(Moral of the story : I don’t have a good memory. Or only a visual memory. Which explains why I also have problems with podcasts.)
It also explains why I’m not that difficult with adaptations. The book is already too unclear in my head when I’m going to watch the movie so I’m not complaining with details. If I had remembered my readings better, I would have thrown my computer out the window while watching « Artemis Fowl ».
