Despite having worked with Nikolai a time or two before, a Barrel rat being called upon by a King for 'a job' still had an odd ring to it. The feeling that there might be more to it than the brief information sent his way beforehand certainly didn't help. But... The money was good, and he could use it to fund his own future endeavours. Though he had to admit that his own curiosity might've played an even more significant role in his decision. An indulgence he could allow himself now survival wasn't as big of a fight as it once was.

So, after ensuring the Dregs were in good hands during his absence, Kaz made his way to Os Alta, and to the palace. The guards at the main door were hesitant to let him pass at first, and for a brief moment, he considered making his way inside via other means, but figured it might be bad form breaking in first thing. A challenge for another time, perhaps. And in the end, they finally seemed to recall that, yes, King Nikolai was indeed expecting someone by the name of Kaz Brekker from Ketterdam.

Being led to wherever it was he was to meet Nikolai, the criminal in Kaz couldn't help but study all of the most likely priceless heirlooms they passed, the countless portraits they passed — some of which he recognized — and the handful of doors that could lead nowhere, or to another room with even more treasures ripe for the taking.

However, that wasn't what he was here for. And he certainly wasn't going to prove anyone right by behaving the way they'd expect him to behave — like a lowly criminal from the Barrel.

Finally, after what felt like forever, they headed through a door and into a rather plain room. Plain as the room might be, Nikolai was everything but. Of course. "Might want to reconsider your guards out there. Had to use all of my charm and sweet-talking abilities to convince them to let me in. Don't think either one of us would've been too happy if they'd sent me back to Ketterdam."

Still thinking about just how deep in it Liliana Temult is. Like in the eyes of the narrative she went from

absent & possibly dead, very sad -> alive just estranged?? mysterious! -> possibly involved in a cult, tragic, can her daughter reach her? -> uncomfortably high up in said cult -> the cult's goddamn General and striking such terror into the local population of the Ruidus that they are afraid of even her appearance or someone who looks like her

Ordinary people who are trying to resist the dictatorial Imperium/Ruby Vanguard alliance and their iron control of the populace are terrified of her. You don't strike terror just by "being there". Terror happens because of actions. And it leaves us to wonder what exactly Liliana Temult has done during her time on the moon to make the citizens fear her so much.

#all of this has happened so fast #but I wonder whether Imogen mourns the version of her (dead/vanished) mother that she held in her mind #the one who was ostensibly good in that way children hope their lost loved ones to be (or at least not full ham evil) #Liliana has at times given off this vague air of regret - mostly regarding Imogen like 'i wish it wasn't like this but it is' #but in general that all this violence and terrorizing Ruidus and killing all the gods - it's unfortunate but part of the Greater Purpose #and that makes her all the more detestable tbh #she sees and understands and maybe even empathizes with those that have been or will be hurt by this campaign for Predathos #and has decided that it's still necessary. unfortunate but necessary. this sort of quiet and awful conviction #the kind of person who will hurt you while telling you it's for your own good and it's better this way #cr spoilers #c3e88 #critical role #liliana temult #op

Oh, definitely! I think it depends on how you word it!

I will note, however, that 5K might be a little short to swing it. For reference: Of Mice and Men is 30k and the first Harry Potter is about 77k

If I were to claim a fanfiction like- oh let’s just say the infamous My Immortal by XXXbloodyrists666XXX for example, I would probably say something like:

“Oh, yes, the novel I read is called My Immortal, I found a digital copy on an indie publishing site. It’s about 44 chapters- so not too long. Yeah, it was very interesting, A really cool interpretation of some classic vampire tropes filtered through the lens of the early 2000s. It explored themes like teenage drama and self discovery/sexuality as well as what happens when adults don’t deal with the consequences of their own actions, instead of pushing them off onto the younger generation. It had a very unique narration style, which reflected the main character’s personality as well as the values of era in which it was written.”
