thinking again about that thing jenny mentioned in the tvd video about how in teen media (or to shippers) every relationship has to be forever because they're teenagers and they don't realize that people move on. and like partially that is true but also 1) a lot of shippers don't just care about watching a ship kiss or whatever, they're interested in the narrative and the arc of a pair of characters. ships aren't interchangeable for them because a different one will not be coming from the same roots and won't have the same narrative weight attached, particularly if it's an obvious copycat of a previous relationship and 2) aside from kids not conceptualizing relationships as temporary because they don't have the relevant life experience, i think that most people have a very strong need to feel that they are not replaceable to other people, that they are profoundly valued and that their loss would have an impact. and a lot of the time a disproportionate amount of that need is placed into relationships that are kind of by their very nature fragile and temporary, and it's also true that people need to be able to move on when a relationship ends. but part of the point of shipping something for a lot of people is not that they think all romantic relationships need to be or are that intense but that they wish for the kind of relationship that doesn't naturally reach an emotional endpoint & the kind of connection that genuinely can't just be replaced with another connection of the same type. and like where else are most people going to experience that than in storytelling
