Okay, review time!! If you are one of the oddballs who thinks you cant be critical of something you love I suggest you stop reading now before I ruffle your feathers. Iron flame, second in the empyrean series. I am gonna start with what I was not a fan of and then go into the shit I adored.
1) what in the actual fuck was the pacing of this book?? I can tell you what, it was non existent. There was none. Where I thought there was a lot of filler in the last book there was none in this one. We got snap shots of conversations and then *boom* more plot flew at you. The timeline of this book greatly suffered for it i think bc we end only a couple weeks, if that, after threshing, which happens sometimes in October. This book was actually so wild with times.
2) while it was a spectacular cliff hanger, xaden becoming venin pisses me off. Especially if Rebecca yarros isnt going to have him tell violet. Like if that small tid bit of a conversation we got wasnt him telling vi that he was venin then the entire romantic conflict of this book was rendered pointless and their going to be having the same fucking fight for the rest of the series and at rhat point I give up.
3) I understand that the revolution is trying to take down basgaith and make the world better or whatever the fuck but can someone actually formulate a real plan for me?? Because I feel like their mission is just, giving violet and xaden something to be pissed at each other about.
4) the entirety of cats character. I get that she was set up as a spin on the typical jealous ex. Like having her be bitter about xaden picking violet over her but OH WAIT it wasnt actually about the man it was about the crown, oohh not like other girls. Im a writer too I see the point. I dont care. I think it was trashy. If you wanted her to be a bitter spiteful ex then have her be a bitter spiteful ex, the whole crown thing was shallow.
OKAY haters your time is up now onto the shit that made my heart hurt with joy and sadness
1) xadens arc in this book. I really liked that he went from "transparency is never gonna happen" to losing his fucking mind over violet and giving her everything. I love feral men and he qualifies. I think his arc was really well done and i liked it.
2) I appericiate that violet stuck to her guns for this book. She wouldnt let xaden off without a fight and I loved that. She made him bow and scrape and I was eating it up. It was spectacular.
3) the throne room scene. Violet on the throne. "Im making a temporary point not a lasting vow of maschocism" xaden being feral.
4) that gets its own point actually, just xaden being completely feral this entire book healed a part of my soul.
5) andarna's little speech at the end where she was like "I waited for you violet" made me ugly cry. That was just so hopelessly good I loved it. Andarna in general heals my heart but that part was just *chefs kiss*
6) tarin being completely and utterly ready to eat people this entire book. Just, at every turn "I want lunch their pissing me off " was spectacular
7) every scene their squad was in. Rihannon, violet, sawyer and ridoc are my roman empire. Their bond is so amazing. The fact that they launched a rescue mission for violet. Rihannon being ready to kill xaden at every turn. Ridoc being so platonically and adorably in love with violet. Just- augh happy cries happy cries. I love it all. Their so special tbh.
8) I love xaden actually, just, the whole book every scene hes in lives in my brain.
9) I liked that we saw a small bit of violet being feral this book too. I hope that we get more of that in future books. I want more of violet losing her fucking mind. Hot, badass women covered in blood
10) Liam. Fucking Liam. When violet was kidnapped and Liam was there. Now, do I logically understand that he was a hallucination, yes, do i care?? No. He was a gift from Maleck I will be hearing no critiques on that. It was so fucking sweet and amazing. I love violet and Liam and Liam being dead so horribly breaks my heart. I loved Liam. Liams death lives rent free in my skull.

Sadie Nelson's summer is off to an awful start.
Her first year in high school has been a disaster, with failed classes and more detentions than she'd care to admit. With summer school the only thing to look forward to, she doesn't think it can get worse - until her parents sit down and tell her they're getting a divorce. The news comes as a devastating kind of relief. She can't wait for the fighting to come to an end, even if it means split holidays.
So when her parents send her off to her aunt's house in Newfoundland for the rest of the summer, she figures things can't get much worse. Her Aunt Claire is content to leave her alone while she works on her art, and Sadie spends most of her days by the seaside, wandering or drawing boats, and lost in thought.
When she finds a strange girl on an abandoned cove, far from town, Sadie is quick to try and make her first friend in St. Brenden's Bay. But her new friend is stranger than she realizes - and what does her Aunt have to do with her appearance?
empyrean eclipse;
Dr. Hazel Hartley-Pryce is what most people refer to as a genius. The leading cybioengineer in the paradisaical city of New Eden, she’s revolutionizing the very concept of prosthetics. At least, that’s her day job. Most of the time, she’s just Zelle Pryce, awkward and unknown heir of an oil empire trying to make up for her family’s myriad sins.
Lark Donaghue lost their arm and their memory in an accident five years ago — or, at least, they think it was an accident. Ever since, they’ve been doing their best to recover in both mind and body. As one of the recipients of the Hartley-Zimmer prosthesis, they spend most of their time in the labs having their new arm calibrated, or in physical therapy, getting used to having a left arm for the first time.
When they bump into each other in the hospital café, Zelle has no idea that Lark is one of her test subjects. Likewise, Lark doesn’t associate the cute young doctor he meets with Dr. H. Hartley, the mysterious billionaire scientist who invented their prosthesis. Each are determined to keep their past a secret, eager to have something normal in their lives.
But when Zelle is attacked, everything changes. The mystery behind Lark’s amnesia might finally be solved — but at what cost?
wrong witch;
born into a family of witches, morgan has never shown a drop of magical power - no matter how much his mothers insist he has the inherent potential. he’s ready to give up on magic altogether, when, on his seventeenth birthday, he wakes up covered in blood, having sleepwalked into the nearby woods. suddenly, he has more power than he knows what to do with, and all of his dreams are coming true - but at what cost?
and why?
gabriel graves is a warlock, having traded his eternal soul for magic. when his family moves from bustling new york city to a small town in the midwest, he’s taken from his circle of power — his true family — and left alone. the citizens of ashborough, mi, are perfectly normal, and perfectly boring.
except, of course, for the mysterious delacroix family.
morgan and gabriel’s lives collide in the ashborough woods, as morgan seeks to discover the source of his newfound powers, and gabriel searches for a place to call his own.

alruna dr plot | part II : alodian culture
Today’s post is going to be specifically about the Alodias Empire, empyreanism, and food. Kinda boring… but I think it’s important to get all this shit out the way before getting to the cool stuff.
Tumblr media
The Alodias Empire is considered to, debatably, be the most powerful empire. Others may say it’s the Umbrian Empire due to their military strength.
As mentioned in the last post about the plot, this empire’s largest export is in magitech. The most well-known and prestigious schools are located in the Alodias Empire, but the capital, Wyndrial City, is known to house some of the most talented mages and magic schools. Tourism also brings in a lot of wealth because of the intricate and unique architecture.
The most practiced religion is Empyreanism. Empyreanism is a polytheistic religion that focuses on twelve gods (yes all of them are Greek Gods, I was too lazy to come up with names).
Some virtues that Empyreans follow are:
-All followers should pursue knowledge, regardless of status and gender
- People of higher status should help those who are in need
- Celebrate Nightmyrrth to honor Selene, the Goddess of the Moon, Protector of Hidden Civilizations and the Night Sky
- Always treat those older than you with respect and kindness
- Introspection, meditation, and self-awareness
- Respect to the environment, meat isn’t outlawed to consume or anything, but instead, it is usually not the main course of the meal like how it is in American cuisine.
- Strive to be skilled and passionate
- Strive for elegance in actions, speech, and appearance, as well as seek to embody grace in their interactions with others.
Most followers, especially elves, favor the Goddess of the Moon most because of her role in a lot of tales. She’s often known as the Protector of lost civilizations because she helped rebuild the Alodias Empire and protected elves until they were strong enough to hold their own (will talk about this sometime in a tales post <3).
Because of this heavy favoritism for Selene (moon goddess/protector of lost civilizations), Nightmyrth is the most extravagantly celebrated holiday (it’s essentially Christmas except the aesthetic is more ethereal). Nightmyrth is celebrated in Decimbrius (December) which is the month of Selene. On Nightmyrth eve, families pray to receive good luck, and children often eat a dessert called Melrie. It consists of very finely ground ice, mixed with creamed unicorn milk, topped with mild fruits, especially Yuva. Nectar from winter flowers are drizzled on top of the cream, ice, and fruits. It’s served in a hand sized bowl that is charmed cold on the inside. A common drink eaten throughout the main course meal during Decimbrius is creamed unicorn milk smoked with kayanise candles (imagine milk with a hint of black tea). The drink is called kayan milk.

The greater will is not evil or good. It's the supreme deity of the world but it seems obvious to me that it's a non-interventionist deity, if it even exists. Marika's Golden Order claims it follows the GW in the same way oppressive regimes claim to be representative of God's will.
The GO is not only oppressive, but divine family disputes wreak havoc on the world and its creatures. Ranni's order of stars is a solution to this by placing divinity(herself and the Elden Ring) into space away from mortals. It's made clear that Ranni's problem is with the Two Fingers who have their own agenda and not the Greater Will since it has "abandoned" the world. If the Greater Will was interventionist and Marika shattered the Elden Ring to oppose it, it would've stopped her from doing so the same way it supposedly collapsed the Nox civilization. Speaking of, I think it's highly likely that the GW didn't actually do anything to the Nox and it's more akin to the Tower of Babel myth. The Nox Society collapsed, probably because of Astel, and the Two Fingers claimed it was because they angered the GW to prevent people from questioning them. Throughout the game it's made clear that the Two Fingers are manipulators and cannot be trusted, supposedly speaking for the GW when we are told in the intro that it has abandoned TLB. Empyreans' Shadows are created directly by the Two Fingers to keep them in check. The Two Fingers are basically the heads of the church while Marika is the head of the Eastern Roman Empire.

Tema, the Guide of Windaria.
[Before the prophecy was ever set in motion, the galaxy-reshaping empire of the Architects used the remains of the old magic to glean the future and divine the birth of the Unlimited. With this newfound knowledge, three of the Oracles were appointed as the Guides - Fabula as the Guide of the Cradle (now known as Wonderland), Tema as the Guide of Windaria, and Istoriya as the Guide of Misterica. Persisting in a half-alive state as astral projections bound to crystal vessels powered by Empyreans, the Guides set to work in orchestrating the future in which the destined wielders arose from their respective worlds, ready to wield the Demon Weapons and lay waste to Chaos' schemes.]
[Tema, through the use of her multi-limbed Empyrean and the ancient technology of her people, manufactured a species of Soil-sensitive creatures known as Moogles to aid in her mission of slowly uplifting the Soiltech world of Windaria and directing them towards eventually unearthing the Magun. Ever secretive, she only elected to show herself to very few chosen - coming to be known in fairytales and myths as Loahni Mavuahddi, the Yellow Witch.]
[Through her experiments - a grand work for the greater good, but not without its sacrifices - she had formed an updated hypothesis on the process of Esper birth, often utilizing mortals as oblivious ingredients in manually facilitating the evolution of Esperkind.]

Finished Iron Flame by Rebecca Yarros, here are some thoughts...
Tumblr media
Overall, I thought Iron Flame was slightly better than Fourth Wing, which was surprising because often sequels that come after big reveals that suddenly expand the world our story is in can make the story feel unfamiliar and disorienting.
I was also open about how unhappy I was at the end of Fourth Wing when Xaden was portrayed as the wrongful party for keeping the rebellion a secret from the daughter of the general who a) was a leader of the kingdom they were rebelling against and b) executed his and many other children's parents from rebelling before them :/ But please, explain to me why your less-than-a-year-long relationship trumps all that.
Iron Flame did a little better by letting Xaden stand up for himself and giving Violet better reasons to feel betrayed (i.e. not wanting to be lied to about things that put her in danger rather than just wanting full disclosure because they're dating).
I enjoyed how the rebellion plot played out. I won't say much about it to avoid spoilers, but lots of new information is revealed! It felt well planned out, and it was interesting to see how each of the characters reacted to learning the empire and their friends' secrets.
My biggest criticism in terms of plot and worldbuilding for both Fourth Wing and Iron Flame is that the Venin are not at all compelling villains. I really don't have anything good to say about them. The conflict that makes this series interesting is the political corruption within the empire.
We also learn more about dragons and their governing system in this book, which I was especially excited about. Lots of the information we got left me with more questions than answers, so I'm very excited to see what comes next. In the third book, I'm hoping we get to see the Empyrean in action and get to meet more of the dragon elders.
I felt that this second book focused more on the plot than the first book, which I think was a good choice for this series. I can't help but compare Rebecca Yarros's writing to Sarah J. Maas's fantasy romances because they're very similar in my mind. With Maas's writing, I always see her series decline after the main couple gets together and there's not enough plot and worldbuilding to carry the series. I was worried Yarros would follow the same script, but it seems like now that Violet and Xaden have agreed they're in love, we're seeing more focus turn to other parts of the story. It's not that the romance part of the story has completely been abandoned, but that the author doesn't have to fill the entire book with smut and relationship drama to make up for a terrible plot.
In the third book, I would like to see more focus on Violet's other relationships and even more development of plot and worldbuilding. I think this book's biggest weakness is that we didn't get to see much development of Violet's friendships and most disappointingly, her long-lost brother that she recently reunited with.
Overall, this is still a fun series! I'm excited to see what the third book brings to the table!

Kishar is the faction you've talked about the least, so can you elaborate more on what the situation there is like?
Kishar is a planet inhabited by several thousand humans and several billion stock. the line is drawn across nobility, and the billions are only recognised by the dynasties as numbers of "stock" they claim ownership of (allowing them to lay claim to territory they do not technically have any holdings in)
the planet Kishar (formerly Earth) is a temple built on a wasteland. nearly the entire surface is covered in accumulated hyperurban development, left to collapse and decay into the metrolithic labyrinths. additionally, the rotation of the planet was mined out for energy long ago, with the resulting nightmare summers and winters that last roughly six months at a time ensuring that only the fabulously wealthy nobles are actually capable of living above ground
rivalries between dynasties exist, but so long as nobody kills anyone or sparks outright war, most violence is permitted. this leads to scions from rival families getting into bloody duels being a pretty common sight on the streets of Kishar cities. in fact, it's done in public by design: witnesses ensure that the stories are believed and fights remain fair
because of their propensity towards non-fatal martial display, an adult noble without the scars of adolescent duels is an incredibly unusual sight
if the Divine Solis is a church that grew into an empire and the KHU is a trade syndicate that grew into a federation, the Empyrean Court is a holy land that nobody dares advance into. the Empyrean Court is respected, and as the heritors apparent of the font from which humanity emerged, they hold no small amount of sway throughout the system
additionally worthy of note, Anshar (formerly Lua) is treated as a forbidden land. the exact significance of it varies from place to place, but treaties have been signed and edicts have long since been handed out. the moon is for nobody, and it is the ward of the dynasts alone.
