#Dislocations

Note
I have a question.
I took a wilderness first aid course in college, and I remember that you can reduce one type of shoulder dislocation in the field, and one you absolutely cannot, but i can't for the life of me remember if it's an anterior or a posterior.
Can you tell me which is which? (at this point I wouldn't try to do it without getting recertified, but it's just frustrating to not remember).
It's anterior.
You can reduce anterior shoulder dislocations in the field because the way that it dislocates means it is less likely that other bones in the shoulder are broken. Meanwhile, with posterior dislocations, its a lot more likely that the clavicle or scapula or the humerus itself is fractured in a way that would make reducing the dislocation dangerous.

Artificial intelligence unravels mysteries of polycrystalline materials
Researchers at Nagoya University in Japan have used artificial intelligence to discover a new method for understanding small defects called dislocations in polycrystalline materials, materials widely used in information equipment, solar cells, and electronic devices, that can reduce the efficiency of such devices. The findings were published in the journal Advanced Materials. Almost every device that we use in our modern lives has a polycrystal component. From your smartphone to your computer to the metals and ceramics in your car. Despite this, polycrystalline materials are tough to utilize because of their complex structures. Along with their composition, the performance of a polycrystalline material is affected by its complex microstructure, dislocations, and impurities. A major problem for using polycrystals in industry is the formation of tiny crystal defects caused by stress and temperature changes. These are known as dislocations and can disrupt the regular arrangement of atoms in the lattice, affecting electrical conduction and overall performance. To reduce the chances of failure in devices that use polycrystalline materials, it is important to understand the formation of these dislocations.

Whump Prompt #1047
Anon asked:
I have a character who has had a knee injury in the past and it still effects him sometimes. My dilemma is what kind of knee injuries would be long-term/ able to linger around this long? The most i’m thinking time wise is 2-4 years ago, is that accurate?
I can give it a go, but bear with my limited knowledge on this one. I can offer starting points more than anything:
Dislocations would be a good start - a bad dislocation that could've left nerve damage behind/had to have surgery on may result in lasting difficulties.
A broken knee could be easily as useful.
Botched surgeries!
Shattered kneecap which resulted in a fake one being put in in it’s place? These can take 3-6 months to heal apparently, and if your whumpee rushes this, they could be jeopardising their healing process.
General stabbing: again muscle and nerve damage as a result and scar tissue that leaves pain behind.
Old muscle injuries that hurt when they’ve been on their feet for too long.
Not really an injury but could arthritis be a possibility for this scenario?
(Feel free to add in the reblogs/comments)
EDIT: Definitely check out the comments and re-blogs! Thanks everyone!

Hii my whumpee got a dislocated shoulder and i searched your blog but it only had stuff about relocating it. So if you didn't mind, I wanted to know the worst outcome for not doing it.
If it goes untreated, the complications may include:
Bursitis, tendonitis
Tearing of the muscles, ligaments and tendons that reinforce the shoulder joint
Neck and upper back pain
Nerve or blood vessel damage in or around the shoulder joint
Weakness, swelling and muscle spasms, decreased mobility, chronic pain
Becoming more prone to repeat dislocations, especially if the injury is severe
Stretched or torn ligaments or tendons in the shoulder or damaged nerves or blood vessels around the shoulder might require surgery for repair.

Authors notes: day three, we're going strong! I plan to write a continuation of this as it was getting a bit long and I was running out of time so if this is something you want to see, let me know!
Buck had been looking forward to this trip ever since he’d brought it up with Eddie, eager to finally have some time off work and even more excited to spend it with his boyfriend. He’d booked a long weekend away for them both in an amazing cabin surrounded by the best rated hiking trails he was excited to explore.
The first morning they were there they decided to set out early. They both packed everything they needed and headed out, both excited to spend the day in each other's company and enjoy the views the trails had to offer. Buck had opted for one of the more complex trails but they both felt competent enough and the views at the end would make it all worthwhile.
As they ventured deeper into the forest, the terrain grew steeper but neither of them were fazed. Buck had been so distracted talking to Eddie that he didn’t see the tree root sticking out from the ground and went stumbling forward. Eddie was quick to grab his jacket, saving him from face planting into the ground.
“Woah,” he turned back to look at Eddie with a relieved smile, “that was close.”
Eddie’s smile quickly faded as Buck took a step backwards and lost his footing on some loose rock. He wasn’t quick enough this time to grab Buck as he tumbled down the side of the steep hill. Eddie ran to the edge, his eyes widened in panic as he watched his boyfriend hit every rock and jagged edge on the way down until he landed face down at the bottom.
“Buck! Buck, can you hear me?” he called out, but there was no reply.
With no thought for his own safety, Eddie set one foot down on the edge to begin his descent down the steep hill, but the ground was too loose and he also lost his footing and plummeted down the hill. The last thing he saw was a rock coming up to meet his face before his world faded to black and his body slumped next to his boyfriends.
Eddie’s not sure how long it had been when he finally regained consciousness, disorientated and in pain. His head throbbed as he came more to his senses and groggily took in his surroundings. The forest had grown darker since he was last awake and it took him a moment to remember what had happened. Panic overwhelmed him as it all came rushing back, the trail…the fall…Buck.
He looked to his side where Buck still lay face down and unmoving beside him. With no thought for his own pain or injuries, Eddie scrambled to Buck’s side and carefully rolled him over to his back. He held his own breath as he leaned his head in close to check Buck was still breathing, choking out a relieved sigh when he felt Buck’s breath against his cheek.
“Buck? Buck, hey. It’s me. Open your eyes for me,” Eddie called as he rubbed his knuckles into Buck’s sternum in the hope he’d get a response.
Buck’s eyes fluttered open, unfocused for a moment before his brow furrowed and his face contorted in agony. He let out a pained grunt, his back arching as the sensation overwhelmed his body.
“What is it? What’s wrong?”
“My leg…” Buck continued to writhe, but it only made the pain worse.
Eddie placed his hands on Buck’s shoulders in an attempt to keep him still and grounded, not wanting him to cause any further injury until he knew what he was dealing with. “I need you to calm down, alright? You’re going to be okay. I’m going to take a look.”
“O-okay.”
Eddie wasted no time as he pulled out the pocket knife from his jeans, easily tearing through the fabric of Buck’s pant leg. He had to swallow the bile that rose in his throat, not sure if it was the concussion or the sight of Buck’s mangled and dislocated ankle. “Buck…”
Buck looked up at the sound of his name. He knew by the look of Eddie’s face it wasn’t good. “That bad, huh?”
Eddie nodded grimly in reply, “Buck, I’m going to have to get your boot off to get a better look and I’m not going to lie to you, it’s going to hurt like hell.”
Buck swallowed and took a deep breath to prepare himself, “do it.”
Eddie took a deep breath to steady his nerves as he thought through his next moves. “Deep breaths for me,” he instructed as he placed a supportive hand on Buck’s calf.
Bucks fingers dug into the dirt beneath him as he sucked in a breath with a grunt in an attempt to not scream.
With the boot off, Eddie could finally get a proper look at the injury and it didn’t look good. His foot was pale, the dislocation obviously cutting off blood supply. His suspicions were confirmed when he pressed his fingers into the pulse point there.
“I can’t feel a pulse...”
Buck knew what that meant, he knew Eddie would have to put it back into place if he didn’t want to risk losing his foot. He also knew the pain was about to get a lot worse.
Eddie looked around for his bag and rummaged through for any supplies he could use to help stabilize Buck’s leg. He mentally kicked himself for not being more prepared and packing more when all he came away with was a small first aid kit and a spare shirt.
He grabbed the knife again and began to tear strips of fabric and found a few sticks that would do the job well enough until he could figure out a way to get them both out of there.
“You ready?”
Buck nodded, “yeah. Yeah, just do it.”
Eddie gently grasped Buck’s foot once more but paused as he heard Buck gasp in pain.
“I’m sorry.”
Without further hesitation, Eddie continued. He kept his eyes averted, he knew Buck needed him focused on the task at hand, no matter how much it tore him up inside to hear Buck in pain.
Buck tried his best to keep still and to keep from making a noise, but he couldn’t hold it any longer as Eddie placed his hands ready to realign the bone. The pain shot through him like nothing he’d felt before, not even when the fire truck had crushed his leg all those years before.
“P-please make it stop. Eddie s-stop,” Buck pleaded through gritted teeth.
“I know baby, I know it hurts, I’m sorry. I’m so sorry.” Eddie paused for a moment, hating the sound of Buck being in pain but ultimately knowing it was for his own good. “I’m going to be as quick as I can. Do you think you can take some deep breaths for me?”
“O-okay,” Buck managed between sobs. He took a few deep breaths as instructed in an attempt to calm himself.
“I’m going to do it on three,” he informed, leaving little room for argument.
“No…”
“One…two…” Eddie didn’t wait for three as he pulled on Buck’s leg harshly and realigned the bone.
Buck’s scream was gut wrenching as Eddie felt the bones pop into place. Relief washed over him as he pressed his fingers into the pulse point on Buck’s foot and felt the thrum of his heartbeat beneath his fingers.
“It’s alright Buck. You’re okay,” Eddie whispered, his voice still trembling. “I’m going to make a splint and that should help with the pain.”
With the equipment he’d managed to assemble beforehand he managed to fashion the makeshift splint and stabilize the injury. Buck threw his head back in pain as Eddie worked, “fuck…”
“Nearly done,” Eddie reassured him, “hang in a little while longer for me.”
With the splint secured and the injury as stable as he could manage, there wasn’t much more he could do. Eddie helped prop Buck up a little, careful to not jostle his leg as he got him a little more comfortable.
With Buck upright he was finally able to get a good look at Eddie. “Eds…your head.”
Eddie hadn’t paid much attention to his own injuries, his mind being so focused on Buck he’d missed the large gash on his forehead.
“I’m going to call for help, alright. We’re going to get out of here.” Eddie reached into his pocket but his hopes were quickly dashed when he saw the smashed screen. Buck tried to pull his own from his pocket but came away empty, figuring it must have tumbled out of his pocket on the way down. They were stuck.
The forest had grown quieter as the night drew in closer. The pair had no other choice than to huddle together for warmth and hope someone would find them.

are there any body parts that can easily dislocate
It depends on what you mean by "easily". Fingers and toes are relatively easy to dislocate compared to, like, a shoulder or hip. But it still takes a considerable amount of injury to dislocate a finger.
Probably the easiest to dislocate is a joint that has already dislocated in the past. For example, if someone dislocates their shoulder, it is a lot more likely that the shoulder will dislocate again because the first dislocation damages the muscles and tendons that hold that joint in place.
All that said, a connective tissue disorder can make dislocating things a LOT easier. Because this threshold to dislocation is lower in, say, ehlers danlos, it's less likely that the same force that dislocated a joint also broke a bone around it, so it is usually safer to reduce these by oneself than a first-time traumatic dislocation after a fall, shear, or crush injury.

Using electric fields to control the movement of defects in crystals
An international team of researchers, led by University of Toronto Engineering Professor Yu Zou, is using electric fields to control the motion of material defects. This work has important implications for improving the properties and manufacturing processes of typically brittle ionic and covalent crystals, including semiconductors—a crystalline material that is a central component of electronic chips used for computers and other modern devices. In a new study published in Nature Materials, researchers from University of Toronto Engineering, Dalhousie University, Iowa State University and Peking University, present real-time observations of dislocation motion in a single-crystalline zinc sulfide that was controlled using an external electric field. "This research opens the possibility of regulating dislocation-related properties, such as mechanical, electrical, thermal and phase-transition properties, through using an electric field, rather than conventional methods" says Ph.D. candidate Mingqiang Li, the first author of the new paper.

My shoulder hurts so much 😭
It's so unstable, I've been having subluxations all week. I've taken some pain meds but they're only just taking the edge off
Does anyone have experience with using shoulder braces for hEDS? I've found some at a reasonable price but don't know if they'll help at all

Whump Prompt #1046
Anon asked:
Anything for dislocated joints? Character being nauseous at the sight and the reluctance toward getting it out into place? Maybe resetting it in a not-so-ideal scenario?
“It’s fine, just leave it for now.” The whumpee said the entire mission because they could face a shoot-out, but not having their arm put back into place.
The whumpee is happy to dislocate anything for the sake of escape, but hate having it put back.
Setting it in the field, but having to dislocate it, then reset it back in medical because they didn’t do it right the first time.
Having nerve damage in that area.
The whumpee has dislocated [joint] so many times, that they have lasting weakness/pain in that area.
Your whumpee using a makeshift sling to support the limb.
“Why is your arm hanging like that?” “Not important.”
“You will take a bullet to the leg, witness horrors beyond our imagination and take an iv without flinching... but you refuse to even look at your dislocated knee?” “... it gives me the ick.”
“Hey guys, watch this!” *whumpee easily pops body part out and in again (for whatever the event calls for)* Everyone quietly: “what the fuck.”

I think it says something that I started out my day with a migraine out of nowhere and a spontaneous shoulder dislocation, and less than twelve hours later, I found myself laying in bed wondering why it felt like my arm was all pins and needles.
I fucking forgot that I’d dislocated my shoulder this morning. I just. Forgot. 🤦

It's All in My Head
I can’t sit too long with my knee bent. I don’t sleep on my left side. I avoid standing for extended periods. I hope people don’t squeeze too hard when they hug me. Because I know that if I do, things will get sore and stiff and it won’t be a fun time.  In May 2019, I dislocated my knee for the first time while playing netball. I then sub-located twice more and eventually had surgery in May…
