#Bollywood Fun Songs of 70s

Note
bestie om shanti om is a really good contender. i mean deepika had THE best debut of bollywood history me thinks. but i’m sorry k3g really is That Bitch. the songs? all top tier. kareena’s over acting which seems to fit perfectly? perfect. hrithiks vest with no shirt underneath? fashion revolution. the parent drama? realistic. nothing beats the romance of srk and kajol stopping and slaying in the middle of the dance because their necklaces got intertwined. om shanti om is great i will not lie i love deepika is so good, but something about k3g makes me go feral
My arguments to defend Om Shanti Om:
You say soundtrack. I say Ajab Si. Main Agar Kahoon. They had a Phantom of the Opera esque musical concept song recapping the whole movie
Shantipriya’s dupatta entangling in Om’s dhaaga like (me and Kang Taehyun when)
The literal crossover of a lifetime that is Deewangi Deewangi (MCU could never)
This movie feels like a love letter to Bollywood itself. All the references? So much fun. The melodrama literally seeping out of the plot. Imo this is as Bollywood as Bollywood gets god i love her.
The biggest reason is probably the nostalgia factor. I remember 2006 like the back of my hand. I saw the trailers on TV. I was dancing down the stairs to buy the DVD. I was traumatized by the climax.
Points on K3G:
She came out before when i was born. I cant remember 70% of the movie. But yes “Bole Churiyan” might have been the first song i heard. Pooja was everywhere (she’s still an icon)
I love how due to the time jump and two pairings it feels like two movies in the price of one.
The parent thing youre right: its something every desi family can relate to. Do you feel suffocated? Do you feel like they dont listen or value your wants? Yes. But do love each other?… Also yes. Bollywood tends to glorify parents and parenthood but this got the assignment right.
My parents found this movie super annoying and thought “the star-studded cast was put to waste” so every time she was on Zee TV they switched the channel after a while. So this is why im a bit biased against it.
I’ll probably check it out next and ill tell you if i have broken out of my parents prejudice and liked it better.

2024 Wedding Dance Trends
Tumblr media
One of the most anticipated aspects of any wedding is the dance floor, where couples and guests can show off their moves and have a blast. But what are the hottest wedding dance trends for 2024? Here are some ideas to inspire you: - Disco fever: Some believe that disco died, but 2023 and 2024 wedding trends beg to differ. Retro, gaudy, and joyful '70s vibes are trending in a big way at weddings, with shimmering disco balls at the center of it all. You can also add some flair to your dance floor with LED monograms, vinyl floor wraps, and fun colors and shapes. Don't forget to play some classic disco hits like "Stayin' Alive" and "I Will Survive" to get everyone grooving. - Cultural fusion: As more couples embrace their diverse backgrounds and heritage, they are also incorporating cultural elements into their wedding dances. Whether it's a traditional folk dance, a Bollywood number, or a salsa routine, you can showcase your roots and celebrate your union with a dance that reflects your identity and values. You can also invite your guests to join in and learn some new steps from different cultures. - Flash mob: If you want to surprise and delight your guests with a choreographed dance, why not go for a flash mob? A flash mob is a group of people who suddenly break into a coordinated dance in a public place, usually with music playing from hidden speakers. You can enlist the help of your bridal party, family members, or even professional dancers to create a flash mob that will wow your audience. You can choose any song or theme that suits your personality and style, from pop hits to movie soundtracks. - Interactive stations: Another way to spice up your dance floor is to add some interactive stations where guests can have fun and express themselves. For example, you can set up a photo booth with props and costumes, a karaoke machine with a microphone and screen, or a DIY cocktail bar with ingredients and recipes. These stations will encourage your guests to mingle, socialize, and create memorable moments at your wedding. #WeddingPlanning #WeddingDirectory #WeddingTips #Weddings #unitytheweddingdirectory #unity #weddingdirectory #weddingplanner #weddinginspiration #weddingideas #weddingtrends2024 #weddingdancetrends2024 #weddingdance #weddingreception Read the full article

I've wanted to see this movie for a while - especially recently, as a combination of rediscovering the absolutely amazing "Jhilmil Sitaron Ka" and of learning that it is, at least in some aspects, a Bollywood version of The Count of Monte Cristo (one of my all-time favorite books). And while it isn't Monte Cristo - in typical 70s Bollywood style, there is an attempt at a comedy track (at least, a couple of scenes) that probably could've been done without, and there is a happy ending for protagonist and the girl (after some misunderstanding-induced near-drama), a lot of talk about honor over money (which, maybe has a point, but they really beat you over the head with this; luckily, the story is great so you don't get annoyed by this too much), and an ending that goes maybe a bit heavy on the action (because, of course, the bad guys have to find out who he is and bring in kidnapping and a subsequent action sequence) - it's still a lot of fun.
Adore this movie. <3
The basic premise remains, for the most part, true to Monte Cristo - a jealous co-worker ends up getting our protagonist framed and sent off to jail for a while. And when he's freed (as the movie begins), he realizes that his mother is dead and his girlfriend is missing. But he happens upon a friend who tells him who framed him and, after some chance encounter with a rich man who listens to his story (including a lengthy flashback in while our hero tells his story, which is fine, including random scenes that he had no way of knowing because he wasn't there, which is annoying but very typical of flashbacks and exactly why they're stupid), the rich man agrees to help him and pretty much gives him free reign over his money. And so, he sets out for revenge.
There's obviously some lack of communication with Rakhee (her first role!), causing him to, for a brief spell, set out for revenge against her as well - but sanity prevails, and then the truth comes out (her truth; he remains hidden). Can't blame her - some random guy shows up and is like "tell me about why you're a widow and what happened to your husband," and yeah, no blame for not wanting to talk. He probably shouldn't have over-reacted. Not telling her, once he knew the truth, though - that's probably harsh. And not telling his friend the entire time, also probably harsh. Like, I get it initially - but after you know your disguise has worked, why still keep it hidden (other than one attempt at a comedy scene midway through the movie, which isn't really all that funny).
I absolutely love Jhilmil Sitaron Ka - both versions! - and upon watching the movie, I think I'm more in love with second, sadder version that Rakhee's character sings (well, mouths; Lata Mangeshkar, obviously, sings it) right before the beginning of the 3rd act. I mean, the happier version is great too - and Lata and Mohammed Rafi are obviously excellent - but I don't know. The sadder version (though, not overly sad) is just more. Also, I may have teared up, because you sort of really feel her pain at that point (because, you know - even if our hero doesn't - that her dead husband is actually him), and that line
Dukh ke toofanon se bhi main na ghabraungi
is absolutely haunting. The music/songs/lyrics back then, man. Love.
Between this and Johny Mera Naam and, slightly lesser, The Train and Kab? Kyoon? Aur Kahan?, 1970 was a splendid year for these sort of crime thriller/suspense movies in Bollywood.

A dad!sam where y/n and Sam fight on American and Indian classic songs of 70s
Oooh i love this so much!
_____________________________________________
Wilsons' Residence// Sam Wilson x Desi!Reader AU
Yeh toh hona hi tha 🎤
"Sam, baby, I love you but you cannot win this fight," you shrug, "70s bollywood is incomparable."
"Everyone is entitled to their opinion, even if it's wrong." Sam says sassily.
"Jaan! Kishore Kumar! Sapno ki rani, Yeh Shaam Mastani? Kora Kagaz?!"
"Sweetheart! Marvin Gaye, Trouble Man!"
"Lata Mangeshkar, Mohammed Rafi, RD Burman?"
"Michael Jackson, Diana Ross, Dolly Parton!"
"You know I love me some Dolly Parton and Diana Ross, but you have to admit, bollywood was on top of its lyric game back then, that's just a fact."
"Seriously? You listen to Jolene religiously! How can you stand there and not cave for Miss Dolly?" Sam asks incredulously.
You huff, trying to think of an argument.
You slowly smirk, "You know what? Let's ask the kids, shall we?"
"Sure! You just lost this fight, baby, and I didn't even have to do anything."
"We'll see, Wilson. Kannas! Come here for a second, we need your help!"
-----------
An hour and lots of sly flattery later, the twins finally came to a conclusion.
"So kids, whaddya think?"
"It was fine, I guess." Riley says.
"Fine?! What do you mean, 'fine'?"
Paul pipes up, "I mean it's fine, it's old people music so it's not something we're really into."
The boys leave to go play with their switch.
You blink, "Wow, did they just, call us old and insult our music taste?"
"I guess they did, baby." Sam says, nervously chuckling.
"I mean, I can't be mad at them, though, we were the same when we were younger. Hated what our parents listened to." You reason.
"I guess we were."
"Wanna put Jolene on loop while we use the nearest object as a microphone?"
"Only if you sing that one Kishore Kumar song you always do."
"Ek main aur ek tu?" you ask.
"Yup! That one, love that one."
"So what you're saying is, I win."
"I didn't say that!"
"I'm just gonna pretend you did."

Supernatural Workout -Oculus Quest 2
Holy... if you have a Oculus Quest I encourage you to download this game.
It is the BEST workout I’ve gotten.. and not cause it burns the most calories or anything.. it’s because it’s fun as hell!
I don’t even notice that I’m working out., if you have played Beat Saber it’s very similar but yet a million times better.
It’s kinda like sword dancing? You have bats, and they smash these balloons, and you also have to squat and lunge through triangles.. it also has the coolest setting.. it’s places all over the world. So I was in Greece in the ruins, I was on Machu Pichu, I was on a mountain in Scotland and a volcano, and even Mars.
The songs are actual songs, they signed a deal with universal music so you’ll have playlists from Ariana grande, lady gaga, k pop, country, polka, classical, rock, pop, 70s beats, even Bollywood and Musicals! They have a new workout everyday! In low, medium and high intensity, they have meditation and stretching too.
For the price of a new exercise machine this cost me 420$ Canadian and the apps subscription is 20$/ month but after the free trial I found it’s 100% worth it.
I hate working out, HATE IT. And dread doing and I hate it while im doing it.. but oh man this ‘game’ is fun I want to keep doing it!

Fanfic Year in Review 2020
thanks for the tag @2manyfandoms2count! This took me a while to get to but here we are!
Ok I feel like this is just gonna end up being a post where I just gush about Phantoms in the Dark but like...c'mon
This is gonna get long so i've put it under the cut:
1) List of fics completed this year in the order they were finished:
Most of my stories are one shots of varying lengths, but I did actually finish quite a few so we have:
A Chance Encounter and So it Goes- both zenmaster fics for That 70s Show
Touch the Rain: I honestly forget I wrote this last year, it feels like I wrote it years ago but it's just a standard identity reveal in the heat of an argument type thing.
Ladybug Luck? What's That? The fic that really started my spiral into writing for the ML fandom, and the birth of the Bollywood Playlist series.
Post reveal, where they didn't know each other irl, Marinette sees Adrien at a Gabriel party, realises who he is, and does some property damage in the process.
our eyes speak (but on our lips is silence) At a wedding where Adrien is best man and Marinette is a guest they immediately recognise the other as their partner. Pure fluff and giddiness ensue
The Seduction of Marinette Dupain-Cheng Post reveal-Chat bets Ladybug that he can woo her as a civilian, employing good old fashioned tactics like flowers and poetry
Pink Snapshots of an Adrinette relationship. I just wanted to see if I could write an entire fic with no dialogue whatsoever, and this one got a huge surge in popularity recently so...guess I can!
Exposed Another fic where they don't know each other as civilians. When their identities are revealed in the worst possible way, Ladybug and Chat Noir hide out in a hotel room as they try to process the situation.
This Red Love My first enemies au! In which Adrien joins Hawkmoth from the beginning, but still goes to school and ends up dating Marinette. When he realises who she is, he has to re-examine everything he thought he ever wanted.
i have found someone (like a nomad finds a home) In the last one, Adrien willingly sided with Gabriel, but in this one, he is forced to after Stoneheart. Years later, he meets Marinette, who makes him feel like he isn't a monster.
Memory Chat Blanc in the aftermath when there is nothing left.
Phantoms in the Dark My biggest accomplishment last year! And the longest story I've ever written at 30k words. A historical marichat story based off my favourite poem The Highwayman by Alfred Noyes. I'm currently working on the sequel.
I only bow down to worship (but I come to a stop when I see you) In which Adrien knows Marinette is Ladybug, and she knows he knows. However, he hasn't told her he's Chat Noir. This is just cute relationship stuff in the same vein as Pink
Collect your Courage, Loyalty, I'll never be the thief (to bring in hot scattered hell) Thought I'd branch out to other fandoms and landed on ATLA. This is a series (eventual zutara) where Zuko realises almost immediately post banishment that he can't follow in his father's footsteps and rebels.
Dancing Lessons Chat Noir and Ladybug decided to reveal their identities at age 20, and now Chat has chosen the venue as well. The only problem is he needs to teach Ladybug how to dance first.
Wish Ok I hurt a lot of people with this one but it's one where in the final fight, Adrien is mortally wounded and Marinette uses the miraculous to save his life, forfeiting her life in the process.Flashes back and forth between her death and how Adrien is coping in the aftermath.
2) Number of words written: 79663. I actually wanted to hit 100k by the end of the year but as those in the guild know, I spent most of December doing kitchen renovations and being pissed about my lack of free time lmao
3) Your most popular fic: Phantoms in the Dark. it has yet to surpass my all time most popular fic it's all a game of chance (they say in wonderland), but it's catching up
4) Your personal fav: Dancing Lessons I wrote this way back in July last year but only posted it in December and I just, it's so sweet I really like it with the flirty banter and just the two of them being SO CUTE
5) Your fav scene: The scene at the end of ch6 of Phantoms where Marinette and Chat talk after their kiss and realise they both are very much into each other.
6) A fic or scene that challenged you:
I am really bad at action sequences, and even though in Phantoms Adrien was out fighting people on the regular, I just sort of...glossed over them. Except for in chapter 8, where I wrote a proper duel between Chat and someone he was robbing.
What I struggled with was describing the movements, not wanting to make it too complicated whilst not having it be 'he feinted and stabbed' or something really simplistic. There was a lot of pen acting involved, but I think the end result is quite good, if I do say so myself.
7) A line of writing you’re proud of: From Phantoms (of course)
In every lifetime, in every land, we shall find each other.
8) A comment that touched you:
I love every single comment that I get, but someone left this on my musketeers fic Going Through the Motions (posted as a series on ao3 to motivate me to finish the fic but when it was done I compiled all the parts and posted it on ffnet as a oneshot lol and one of my absolute fave fics I've written-no surprise that it's historical 😅) on ffnet, which was a HUGE compliment:
"I like the way you wove dialogue from the series with your fiction. Your story gives us a more complete picture of Bonacieux and explains why Constance rejected D'Artagnan, which we did not get from the series. Your version is better. Well done!"
9) Something that inspired your writing:
I mean...I have an entire series on ao3 that is just fics inspired by bollywood songs/scenes-and those were my main inspiration for so many things. (I actually realised the other day that a scene from the movie Kalank is what inspired me to write Wonderland lmao)
10) Your proudest accomplishment (that one scene; finally finishing that one fic; posting your first fic; etc):
Honestly, just writing consistently! I graduated in 2019 and in the past, I've started and abandoned so many projects and ideas, and even the first fic I posted on ao3-it took me a year to get the second chapter up and then I only finished it because I wanted to post other stuff but didn't feel like I could until I finished that one lol.
So yeah, that, and of course, actually writing and finishing Phantoms instead of abandoning it like so many of my other ambitious projects. I'm really proud of the 30k I wrote for that story because it's the most I've ever written for a single thing
11) Do you have any writing goals for the next year?
I want to finish Forgotten Promises, and the third story in the series. I have the vague plot for that one, and know what's going in the epilogue to end the series but I just need to get there.
Oh! and see 100 ways to say I love you to the end.
This was fun! I tag @theanxiouscupcake @an-elysian-tree @quarantined-fics and anyone else who wants to have a go!

idk if you have done this before, but bollywood movie recommendations if you feel up to it please ❤
Oh my gosh I absolutely can! Enjoy these completely arbitrary recs
Movies That Make Me Cry/The First Three Bollywood Movies I Ever Saw/The Beginning of my SRK Obsession:
Kuch Kuch Hota Hai
Kal Ho Naa Ho (AMAZING movie)
Khabhi Khushe Khabi Gham
Bonus: My Name is Khan (excellent look at how desis and Muslim folks were treated post 9/11, cried a lot, the main character is autistic and portrayed positively though I admittedly do not know how other autistic folks thoughts on it!)
Movies That Should Have Been Gay and/or Poly If They Weren’t Cowards:
Kuch Kuch Hota Hai (they were in love, change my mind)
Kal Ho Naa Ho (they were all in love change my mind)
Bajirao Mastani (I mean. I guess it is poly but like......y’know)
Queen (2013)
Student of the Year (note I did not like this movie buuuuuut it is fun watching and imagining the two leads as boyfriends because like. They were.)
Oh? There’s Actual Rep Here?
Kapoor and Sons (my favorite Bollywood movie, 10/10 loved it and it came out before decriminalization so I extra loved the gay rep there).
Ek Ladki Ko Dekha Toh Aisa Laga (lesbians!!!!! In love!!!!)
Shubh Mangal Zyada Saavdhan (note: haven’t watched it but the gay rep!!)
Dear Zindagi (this is mental health representation and it’s fantastic, and the patient/therapist dynamic did NOT happen as I feared it would which made it all the better)
The Cinnamontography.....
Bajirao Mastani (hnnnnnnng just look at this song and the visuals. It’s. Beautiful. ALSO if you’re a Game of Thrones/ASOIAF fan, this story is very, very much in line with what I assume Rhaegar/Lyanna/Elia looked like).
Om Shanti Om (a really cool look at reincarnation and the visuals that I particularly enjoyed is the 70s style movie sets it’s just a very colorful movie and I adore that)
Amir Khan Movies lmao:
Dangal (SUCH a good movie, based off a real-life story - of which the real-life one is probably even more wild than the movie version? A fantastic look on female wrestling sisters and their father who trained them, I usually hate sports movies but this one was really really good)
3 Idiots (means a lot to me, looks at the pressures that parents put on their kids and also about going your own way and finding your own path. TW for suicide in this movie however)
Superstar (idk if it’s on Netflix anymore but it’s where I watched it - a beautiful coming of age story about a girl trying to get her and her mother - and brother - away from her abusive father. It’s a beautiful mother/daughter story and I think even though Amir’s character seemed kind of inconsistently written the emotional story is just FANTASTIC and I like how they didn’t shy away from showing that the main character sometimes exhibited the same traits she was afraid of - a fantastic look at abuse and how it manifests in the home and it’s genuinely heartwarming)
Taare Zameen Par (a young boy with dyslexia!! I need to rewatch this movie but I watched it on a flight to India about 3 times and I adored it)
Movies that Didn’t Fit Anywhere Else But Like...I Recommend Them:
Khoobsurat (SUCH a cute Disney movie and uhhh if you’re like me, Sonam Kapoor and Fawad Khan are both beautiful to look at so there’s that)
The Lunchbox!!!!!! (I need to rewatch it bc I watched it very young I believe or in snippets but I remember it hit hard? Also Irrfan Khan starred in it. <3)

hey, so i thought maybe you could tell us a little what you're currently interested in? ♥ like, what have you been doing during quarantine, are there any new shows you watched that you enjoyed a lot, did you maybe take up a new hobby or something? :)
Hello!! I did not forget this lovely message, I was just in no state to answer (who’d have thought that recovery from surgery is, y’know, taxing) BUT I’M BACK NOW and ohhhh do you know what you’ve unlocked by asking me this question...?? I cannot give you a comprehensive list but I can tell you a couple of the things that I got into during quarantine, and the things I am currently super passionate about! My memory is, uh, not great but thankfully I do journal and write down things so I am confident I can answer this for you :D (plus I do always love recommending things so - aaa??? Thank you for this ask????)
Putting things under a cut because I physically cannot chill but if tl;dr I want you to take away one thing from this it’s that everyone should read Gideon the Ninth by Tamsyn Muir. Thoughts below.
(Also. I would love to go off about my interests more on here but am not sure what... shape that should ideally take? Text posts? IDK pls give me suggestions, help me out?? dfhasjkldf)

I have not seen many, but I can and will scream about The Old Guard over and over because... it was everything I never knew I needed in an action movie?? I don’t reblog many things about it anymore but I love love LOVED it!!
Also, upon recommendation by one of my friends from India, I have been delving into the world of Bollywood movies and WOW Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara was so fucking good??? idk if it’s on Netflix in every country but it is in mine and I highly recommend it. It’s thoughtful, honest, emotional and shot absolutely gorgeously, and it also has that cheesiness that is just... so good... sometimes you just need the cheese y’know???
(Side note, 2020 was the year I saw Pride and Prejudice (2005) for the first time and I am a changed woman. It is now my ultimate comfort movie. Please see it if you have not, I cannot believe it took me this long. I saw it for the first time on an airplane (in january... a lifetime ago) and have seen it many, many times since.)
TV Shows
So, to everyone’s shock but especially my own, I have not really been into TV lately? I watched The Boys because my brother recommended it (it’s good, but gorey and pulls no punches, the R rating is deserved), and recently started watching Jujutsu Kaisen because my sister recommended it (I haven’t watched a new anime in like a year which is kinda wild to me? But I am enjoying this one - the opening SLAPS and what I’ve seen so far has been fun! Plus I’m watching it with my sister and I like sending her reactions xD),,, and that’s pretty much it for this category?? I am aware there is a LOT of good shit out there I just.. .don’t seem to have the attention span for multiple episodes of a Thing these days. Meh. I’m sure it’ll come back to me eventually ^^
Musical Theater
One of the main reasons I think I haven’t been big into TV is because my Musical Passion is in FULL SWING (haha get it). Probably because the only thing that has remained for me during this quarantine is my singing lessons (and lemme tell you... over skype, that shit is ROUGH but still better than not singing at all) and I have been obsessing over learning new songs and finding shows through recommendations and compilation videos on youtube... So.
Shows I listen to a lot these days include Starry, Anastasia, The Guy Who Didn’t Like Musicals, Come From Away (I made a post recently specifically about musicals, you should be able to find it under #French speaks) - specific songs in my range that I am currently learning and obsessing over include “Bring on the men” from Jekyll and Hyde, “The Mad Hatter” from Wonderland, “Show Yourself” from Frozen 2 (I liked it ok I DID), and “Go Tonight” from The Mad Ones (this one makes me cry... I’m making my sister duet it with me bc I can’t stop thinking about it).
Also, if you’re interested in hearing me sing things, head over to my instagram where I post covers (and also art)!!
(Musical people, I am curious to hear opinions about Great Comet, and also The Count of Monte Cristo - two shows I’ve been meaning to check out!)
Video Games
Listen. Animal Crossing New Horizons is awesome and I’m glad I have it (...give me Brewster back, Nintendo, or I WILL RIOT), but I have been branching out into other games for the Switch (might as well make this purchase worth it amirite) - current faves include Celeste (which is SO HARD but also SO FUCKING FUN) and Spiritfarer which I specifically bought to play at the hospital bc I knew I was going to be there for a few days, and let me tell you - best decision of 2020. Please watch the trailer if you haven’t heard of it, it’s GORGEOUS and beautiful and emotional and I loved every second of it. Both of these can also be purchased for PC and I think they are definitely worth the investment!!
In other news I’m back on my Stardew Valley bullshit. It’s just so calming.I revisit it a lot lmao
Books
So... I have been reading. A LOT. I read over 70 books this year, which for me is... average tbh? I have had some less productive reading months but overall I have torn through stuff and BOY do I have recommendations if you want them?? For the sake of brevity I will only mention a few here:
Gideon the Ninth by Tamsyn Muir “Lesbian necromancers explore a haunted gothic palace in space”. That is all. This was my first five star fiction book of the year and I will never be done screaming about it. There is a dedicated but smallish fandom here on tumblr and it deserves SO MUCH MORE. Please, please please. Everyone should read this damn book. It’s confusing in the beginning but I promise it’s worth it IT’S SO GOOD!! And also the sequel is out and it’s also confusing and SO GOOD!!!
Educated by Tara Westover. This is an autobiography and it’s one of those books that like. Stick in your mind for months after you’ve read it. It’s about how this woman escaped an abusive household that was religiously oppressive and also like... survivalist (prepping for the apocalypse) and avidly believed in conspiracy theories - by educating herself, working her way up to going to Harvard. Nothing I say could do the emotional impact of this book justice - and also just, the perspective this book gave me?? Incredible. Education is the most powerful tool and this woman grabbed it by the hair and did not let go and I was FLOORED. Everyone should read this. I don’t even usually read biographies but DAMN.
The Winternight trilogy by Katherine Arden.(Book 1 is called The Bear and the Nightingale). This is a bit of a slow burn type deal - it’s a retelling of a Russian fairy tale (I think?? Or like a folk... story? Something like that) and it is just. So magical. It’s not fast paced but it works up to FANTASTIC moments, the focus is on family and magic and change and “making your own way” and all three of these books were wonderful. It reminded me of Naomi Novic’s Uprooted and Spinning Silver (both of which I also loved back in 2019 and would highly recommend) and they are PERFECT winter reads if you’re looking for something to get cozy with. I liked book 1 well enough but books 2 and 3 knocked it out of the park. Fantastic. Loved them.
I have many more recs but this will do for now hahah
Music
Gonna keep this brief too - my music taste is all over the place, but here are some songs I have been obsessed with recently!! Beware of genre whiplash though because these are Very Different from one another (and different from the musical theater stuff above)
Factories - Autoheart (that bridge gets me every time, idk why. This is one I could have on repeat for hours and not get tired of it either. Something about it just gets me!!)
History Read - The Altogether (The lyrics!! Tbh the entire Silo album is GREAT, but this one is my fave. Their music is so... mellow, in the best way??)
Weather Man - Valley of Wolves (ok this one is just a banger. I’m a sucker for a good sing-along-able hook (that’s not a word. you get me though right) and this fucking DELIVERS. I also just think “I make these dark skies blue, I make these mountains move, let the rain come down, I’m pushing through.... [pause] ... ‘cause I’m the weather man” is such good execution of a concept?? That PAUSE GETS ME it’s just SO FUN?!?! idk man I like a good upbeat banger and this is that.)
I believe (get over yourself) - Nico Vega (this one is just a callout at myself tbh?? “you’re a fool” I AM and I needed to hear it?? It’s also SO FUN to sing!!! We love a banger.)
Kiss me you animal - Burn the Ballroom (mentioning this mainly because it reminded me, lyrically, of Gideon the Ninth and I need someone to confirm this for me before I go insane?? “everybody knows that home is where your teeth sink, love” - I mean c’mon??? Also it’s a banger. I do like some rock from time to time... and this also has a killer driving bassline. This is super fun to drive to, too!!)
((If we have overlap and anyone wants to exchange playlists with me - I am SO here for it. Always looking for new music!!! I mean it!!))
Youtube
Last and certainly not least... meet my newest hyperfixation!!! I have always loved watching video essays, and booktube videos, and arttube videos - and my current niche of favorite creators is the Polygon video team!! They made videos about video games and board games and anything gaming-related and I just. I’m only peripherally a “gamer(TM)” but I love anything and everything they create. (Also you don’t have to know much about video games to enjoy all of their content!! A lot of it is still accessible to Non-Gamers(TM) or casual gamers!) BDG is my new favorite creator, the Unraveled series he does on the channel is a work of genius - but I have also started watching their streams and older series and I am enjoying myself SO MUCH! I love boardgames so their series on them, Overboard, is so fun and entertaining (and I already know a bunch of games I want to buy based on seeing the gameplay), and it also made me invested in the other creators - particularly Simone, I would die for Simone?? And Pat? And Jenna? They each have their niche and they work really well together too and their videos are my Main Serotonin Machine in these trying times(TM), thank you for coming to my TED talk.
Also. If you’re already following me here and you are familiar with Polygon things I BEG YOU TO COME AND TALK TO ME ABOUT THEM because I am like, bursting, but I also don’t want to flood my dash with stuff that 99% of my followers are unfamiliar with y’know??
...I think I’m going to leave it at this - it’s already a lot!
But thank you once again for asking and for letting me Go Off about things I am interested in!! I just... I very often wish I could do this more, but I’m not sure how to go about it? Should I just do text posts about things?? Would that be interesting to anyone?? Or is that like, annoying? Should I start a review blog or something? dhfajkldhf I just want to talk about things that excite me, but whenever I’m here I often just stick to reblogging other people’s stuff... help?? What do y’all want to see??

Shilpa Ray’s Heteronormative Horseshit Blues by Amarantha da Cruz
Musician and rebel Shilpa Ray released her hauntingly beautiful Dream Pop ballad single, “Heteronormative Horseshit Blues”, back in October, accompanied by an equally pleasurably dark music video where Shilpa plays two roles: the submissive love-stricken girl, as well as the object of her affection, a 1950s-type bad boy. The video was directed by OG and legendary New York punk filmmaker Amos Poe, who also directed the video for Ray’s track “Manic Pixie Dream Cunt”. “Heteronormative Horseshit Blues” was inspired by an abusive relationship the musician experienced in her 20s. Her distant, dreamy voice and song arrangement evokes a nostalgic feel, reminiscent of Mazzy Star’s beloved “Fade Into You”, but the the comparison ends there, with Ray’s politically-charged feminist message, a sharp contrast to Mazzy’s atypical love song. Ray’s spirit is also more aggressive, even when playing the role of damsel in distress.
In celebration of our Volume 3 sex issue, Shilpa discussed what sex means to her, the bullshit that still goes on in the music industry, what she’s listening to during this Covid business, and more.
Our 3rd volume is about how women individually define and interpret the subject of sex, and how that differs from the standard patricarchal lense.  We received a wide range of answers from women of all ages and backgrounds. What is your definition of sex?
I think sex and sexuality is something that humans don’t know jack shit about. That’s why we’re still in this mess. I remember watching an interview with Jane Wayne County where she explained why the glam rock movement didn’t survive the early 70s, and that we are more comfortable consuming horror and death then we are with understanding human sexuality. She was right about this and her words stuck with me. We haven’t come that far in understanding sex beyond procreation or sin and the 70’s happened 50yrs ago.
Since the October release of your new single, you’ve said in a few interviews, “I wrote this song from my experiences of being stuck in an abusive relationship during my mid to late 20s, only to come to the realization that the non abusive ones weren’t that much better in terms of power dynamics and conforming gender roles.” What is your approach these days in relationships, when you are confronted with gender related power struggles. Has anything changed?
I’m going through a time in my life where I’m completely disengaged and it’s been great! I can’t predict the future, but I’m really enjoying being alone, working on stuff, going about my day and being in my own world. In a way I’ve always been like that. Sometimes I’ll give in, be an upstanding hetero or whatever but it’s never been fun. It’s a societal pressure, something for friends to gab about, like I accomplished a major feat. How to bag a man and keep him too! Top 10 Tips. No Thanks. Not for me.
Do you think the new non-binary movement is something that’s here to stay and help society evolve – moving away from our mostly heteronormative and gender stereotype world view?
Absolutely! It’s proof that we run in a spectrum, perhaps something even more abstract than a spectrum. Everyone has different desires and needs. Everyone has the right to have their own relationship and ideas about their bodies, and gender identities. Although, I’m cis gender and biologically straight, I’ve been waiting for this movement since I was kicking and screaming at a K-mart the day my mom felt I needed a training bra.
I read that you began releasing music in 2006. In your opinion, how has the musical landscape changed since then?
It’s changed a lot. It’s becoming more diverse now and I’m happy about it. If only the industry can catch up to that. Unfortunately the ones who hold the money and authority that goes with it are still white men.
Have you come across any bullshit as a woman in the well-known male dominated music industry?
Too much bullshit! I’d like less bullshit please.
What is your advice to young female artists who have to navigate the music industry and the sexism they might face within it?
I love how vocal young women are about calling this out! They don’t need advice from me. I need advice from them.
What were some of your biggest music influences growing up, and are there any current artists right now that you’re listening to?
VU was a big one for me growing up. A band that made their listeners want to make their own music is a really powerful thing. Listening to music during Covid has been fun cause it’s all about having a safety blanket and feeling good. So I’ve been listening to everything from Bollywood to Black Sabbath.
Your music video has a major David Lynch vibe. Do you have any favorite directors, or directors you’d like to work with in the future?
Well the fact that I got to work with Amos Poe on the Manic Pixie Dream Cunt and Heternormative Horseshit Blues videos was a dream come true! As far as the future goes, like I said before, I can’t predict the future.

Man, 1973 folks. Victoria No. 203 (the original masterpiece, not the shittastic remake), Chhupa Rustam (the awesome Dev Anand movie, not the shittastic 'musical thriller' from 2001), Dhund, Gehri Chaal, Black Mail ... what an year for suspense/mystery/thrillers! And this movie, Gaddaar, definitely fits that theme as well.
It takes this idea of "protagonistic criminals" - something that 2000s Bollywood has absolutely fallen in love with - and brings it to the forefront, giving us a bunch of criminals who are thrown together when a well-planned (so they say) crime ends with one of them disappearing with the entire loot. And then, out of nowhere, another 'amateur' criminal happens across them and joins them in the hunt for their suddenly missing accomplice (yeah, the twist is already pretty obvious and you're just 20 minutes in).
I think they imply time jumps ahead an year, but I have missed something there - not sure. Either way, the point is that eventually they find their missing man and - after some familial threatening, he admits to having hidden the money. And so then we have everyone together, amidst a top-of-the-mountain hotel of sorts and whole lot of snow. And that's where things go downhill, with things like jealousy and greed and the fact that everyone is at their heart evil (and there's a girl present at the hotel for at least one person to turn his creepy eyes toward) and smaller groups within the group. Of course, this isn't going to end well for them - and that's well before the unsurprising twist gets brought up.
Which is unfortunate because, anger and actual criminality of their actions aside, some of them seem like they would've been fine with the initial 'split the money and scram' plan. But as time passes and the money remains missing, that obviously changes. And then as bodies start falling, they all come to realize that they could be the only one left if they ... well, kill everyone else.
The creepy one who keeps harassing the girl ... he lives, of course. The head of the plan obviously refuses to get caught and takes his own life - though he's not the only one to do that. The guy who stole the money initially - they try to give him a valid reason, family-based, to justify his actions - but honestly, he might be one of the worst of the group. Ranjeet deserved better; Iftekhar too. The twist isn't surprising, but honestly, I kinda wish they'd avoided it. Just let everyone be bad and maybe let one or two or three of them get away with the money. We really don't need the same twist over and over again (of course, I say that now, almost 50 years later: maybe the twist was less frequent then). But hey, they give us what they give us.
More fun, and this refers back to something I mentioned after watching Vishwatma, but - it's really, really fun that they give our entire baddie/protagonist cohort a song (a qawwali, no less!) to sing and dance to. They're so excited upon realizing they're going to get the money (without knowing that the next day will be their worst one yet) that they break out into a song (Tu Gaddaar Hai), which is pretty fun to hear. And we get to see villains like Ranjeet and Pran and "Vinod Khanna" (in quotes for obvious reasons; but in 1973, he was still relatively green and unknown so maybe people didn't see the twist as clearly as one might expect if the movie had been made 10 years later) sing and dance and just have a lot of fun.
It's too bad these criminals didn't just trust each other - their lives would've been a lot less painful if they'd just not been driven to sabotage each other. Honor amongst criminals - definitely not a thing here.
It's a fun twist on the 'multi-starrer' thing which was big from like the 70s thru the 90s, as most of the 'stars' here are people that are known (or would soon be known) as more of the 'villainous' type of actors and yet we get to see them treated as ... well, not heroes, because they're clearly villains ... but maybe as almost-sympathetic (but not quite) protagonists in their quest to recover a whole bunch of money that they've most definitely illegally stolen. And it's pretty well done overall, from start to finish. Enjoyable.

Sea! Can you tell us what genre each of the boys (men) is doing? I'm only certain about Z's which is RnB (and I could be wrong). Thank you.
Zayn belongs in RnB, although he incorporates elements of other genres in his original way. Still Got Time is one of my favorites and has elements of trap and dance. The full segment of Intermission: Flower is floating around the internet somewhere— defo worth a listen. Zayn singing in Urdu, or quoting influences from Bollywood musicals, is an ethereal and unique experience. Sour Diesel shows his admiration of funk and electric blues— it has touches of Hendrix and Prince. His cover of Elvis puts it in a completely different perspective.
Louis is in transition at the moment, which is really intriguing. I have been astounded by his indie taste and influences; it wasn’t something I expected from 1D or his 2017 solo music at all. Even when he did BTY promo and talked about Green Day and the Arctic Monkeys and how he loved Alex Turner’s honest, anecdotal lyrics, I didn’t really believe him. (It’s funny how Harry once said AM’s first album was his favorite, but no longer mentions them). Louis started out in straight-up pop, and I think his songs are always tinged with pop influences— catchy hooks and big, high flying choruses that showcase his strength— a clear high tenor. His voice is too pure and his range too high to do punk or rock (maybe as he ages, he can). I think he’ll likely move in a more Britpop direction, but he also has a love for ethereal anthemic pop— emo, in a way, brooding and nostalgic. Tame Impala, DMAs, and Amy Winehouse are diverse but interesting influences— they get to the dark side of love and friendship in their sunny upbeat songs.
Harry is soft classic rock, with a blend of 70’s soft rock, blues, country ballads in his first album, and more California beach rock and psychedelic rock on the second album (influences from Beach Boys, Crosby Stills and Nash, Simon and Garfunkel— even the Mamas and Papas, or Mary, Paul, and Peter). Harry is influenced by British rock musicians who have incorporated blues and some jazz into their writing, as well as American country music ballads. His listening is wide-ranging and goes from easy-listening funk like Shuggie Otis and SWV to Pink Floyd and Beck. His pre-show playlists show great taste.
Niall’s music, I would say, is the most like American traditional rock compared to the others boys. His influences start with Fleetwood Mac, The Eagles, and Bruce Springsteen, incorporate some country influences— especially modern country. He writes his songs to be performed live; they are rhythmically straightforward and meant for people to sing along to. I think Niall’s songs share some similarities with folk songs and country songs; they tell fun stories, the melodies are affecting, and they are meant to be shared in group settings, with guitars and small bands. Like Ed Sheeran, Niall can play for ten people or 10,000, and it still feels intimate, like a friend playing.
Liam puzzles me, because he was so prolific in 1D songwriting, but he wasn’t involved in most of the writing on his debut album. That leads me to question whether he’s putting out music that will chart rather than music he really loves. His music is a mixture of urban/ dance, like Ed Sheeran’s crossover music into dance (Ed’s new stuff is catchy, hooky drivel driven by bad popular taste, compared to his first albums imho). I don’t follow Liam closely, but most of the musicians he mentions are his contemporaries; it’s hard to know what his influences are. I like the songs on his EP best. I’d describe them as straight pop.
