The Importance of Strategic Planning For Behavioral Health Consultants
Tumblr media
Mental health is an important yet increasing problem in modern society. Like the mind, problems have multiple aspects and require diverse experts. Unlike physical sicknesses, business efforts concerning  behavioral health consultants are less and may require eternal help from management, especially in the executive level leadership. These companies also need to expand, merge, acquire new businesses or require reformation, which needs a strategic planning facet. However, behavioral health is unique and severe in its characteristics – so the strategy planning company will have to customize its services according to the clients they are working for. They must bring the services directly to the patients or arrange organic access to the appropriate psychologists, psychiatrists, or other related professionals. This article discusses the importance of strategic planning for behavioral health businesses – in light of their responsibilities and the expected duties of these planners.

If that post is satire I can't imagine people who would find it funny. Can you show me on the diagram where the unkempt man responding to internal stimuli and making repetitive movements hurt you? Go touch grass. Go volunteer at a soup kitchen. Break this classist armor you've built around yourself

There is great comfort in the comfort zone. Truth be told, you can always live your life in your comfort zone. It is safe there, and you are less likely to fail. This place is not so scary.
But, if you choose to live there, you will NEVER feel fulfilled. You will NEVER reach your full potential. Great things happen when you step outside of your comfort zone. You learn that you are much more capable than you thought, and things are not as scary as you thought.
What are you striving for today?

I had a realization yesterday that I should’ve had a long time ago. It’s something that my partner has been telling me over and over but for some reason it finally clicked while I was picking up some apples from a local orchard. I was enjoying the crisp fall air and the scenery- then suddenly felt guilty. Guilty I wasn’t at home doing continuing education, or dropping everything to answer the email request for dog training that I just got. Guilty that I wasn’t going over my class curriculum again or volunteering to take on more- more lessons, more classes, more behavior consulting for shelters, more puppy socialization trips.
Then it came to me: I don’t have to suffer for dog training. You may be thinking, the word suffer sounds dramatic, but it isn’t unfortunately. Animal professionals are struggling everywhere right now, and sometimes that leads to dire consequences. Behavior consultants are reporting an alarming increase in aggression and reactivity. Dogs have lost the jobs they were bred for 100s of years to live and breathe, and instead are faced with confinement and chronic boredom. The human end of the leash is on edge too- stressed by the high cost of living, suffocating work schedules, time constraints, and the troubling increase in behavioral problems in our furry friends. There is intense pressure on us canine behavior professionals right now.
I know how I’ve responded to the pressure- taking on whatever I can, doing all of the continuing education possible, pursuing certifications, shadowing mentors, reading books, calling and emailing clients long after I’m supposed to be done with work for the day. I've volunteered to work with shelter dogs, and driven far lengths to meet with families who need help. I've had discussions about cases with colleagues late into the night. I've had phone consultations with clients on my “day off”. This is the norm for many trainers and behavior professionals.
Now I am burning out. I’m not alone in this- canine behavior professionals everywhere are in the same boat. Where does this burnout lead? I’ve heard stories of behavior consultants becoming physically ill from stress, others resorting to outdated training techniques to just “ get the job done”, and others becoming so overwhelmed and exhausted they leave the industry entirely. Worse case scenario, some are so overwhelmed and disheartened that they take their own life.
We can’t afford to lose one more good trainer. Both because everyone has intrinsic worth as a person, and because we desperately need competent behavior professionals right now.
So what do we do? How do we help ourselves?
Here is where I’m going to start:
Repeat this to yourself: “ My job does not determine my self worth.” I’ll admit this is a hard one for me. Many of us tie our self worth with how successful we are career wise. Should we work hard and strive to be competent? Of course! But we are more than just workers- we are creatures with needs, thoughts, feelings, and complex social relationships. Our jobs do not make up the entirety of who we are.
Find your niche: Have you heard the phrase “ Jack of all trades, but master of none” ? This applies to dog training too! Find what you are good at and you love doing- it could be early socialization and training for young puppies, or separation anxiety, or leash reactivity, or cooperative care. You don’t need to be good at everything- in fact it’s impossible to do so. Find what you love and get really good at it- you will bring about more meaningful and lasting behavior change that way then if you knew a little about a lot of things. Plus trying to be perfect at everything is a recipe for burnout.
Set boundaries kindly but firmly: This is another one I struggle with- I have a hard time not answering that urgent email outside of business hours. But it is necessary to keep us sane. Set business hours for answering calls and emails, and communicate this clearly but kindly with clients and colleagues. Keep some regular days off.
Work together: Dog behavior can be an isolating and lonely field. Reach out to other trainers that you admire the work of and build connections. Share your knowledge and learn new things from others. Build your own support system of mentors and friends. Stay far away from the trainers who refuse to share their “secrets”, or learn new things. To truly help dogs and their people effectively, we need to start looking at each other as collaborators and not competitors. There are enough dogs and people struggling for all of us. If you are struggling with a case, or feel out of your depth, ask your cabinet of trusted dog people for ideas, or even refer out to one of them.
You can’t help everyone: You don’t have to take on every case that comes your way. That’s what’s beautiful about building a community- you have people to refer cases out to. It’s ok if something isn’t your specialty or out of your depth, a client isn’t the right fit for you, or you just don’t have the mental bandwidth for it. If you have to take every case because of financial reasons, consider if raising your prices would help. Or if you are not being paid fairly or not given enough hours by a training company you are employed by, is it possible to look for employment elsewhere or create your own business? You deserve to earn a living wage for your work! Although trainers are often reluctant to raise their prices because they want to help as many people and dogs as possible, think of the extra resources and time you could gain by doing so. In addition to helping you live more comfortably, you could put some of those extra resources and time into creating low cost additional services, scholarships, or free materials like handouts or podcasts.
You are allowed to enjoy things other than dog training: Dog training is fun and interesting but you are allowed to love other things too. Do the things you enjoy and make time for them- whether it’s art, kayaking, playing video games, sports, reading, etc. Don’t let go of the things that bring you joy in life.
Spend time with the important people (and animals!) in your life: Don’t forget to spend time with your loved ones, human and animal. Life is so short, and we all need connection with others.
Quality over Quantity: You don’t always have to be the one to foster every difficult dog, or see every aggression case, or adopt every last chance dog from the shelter. It’s ok to just do a few things and do them well. Every little bit makes a difference.
It’s ok to not be ok: It’s ok to be struggling with your mental health. It’s ok to reach out to resources like medical professionals, counselors, and helplines. It’s ok to need medication to function. It’s not weakness to need help.
Stop fighting with people on the internet: This one takes up your energy, your time, and is stressful. It’s unlikely you will change someone’s mind with a Facebook comment. Protect your energy and focus on educating those who want to listen.
I wish I could say I have mastered everything on this list, but that’s far from the truth. I’ve got a long way to go, and I’m still struggling sometimes. This list is a reminder for me just as much as is to give other trainers ideas.
Remember, you are important and the world needs you.

mini love report — scaramouche
Tumblr media
relationship health diagnosis — 50%*
Tumblr media
symptom one — deeply insecure
for all his bravado, scaramouche is acutely aware that he's unpleasant to be around. he'd ask if you hit your head recently after hearing your confession. initially, he regarded you with suspicion (and loathing, that's what this churning in his stomach has to be). his beauty has been praised for centuries. traditionally, when his admirers draw closer, they're put off by his brutal honesty. he subjected you to the same treatment. instead of running for the hills like you probably should've, you stuck around. he compared you to a 'cockroach infestation.' very charming.
beneath this veneer of vitriol, he's internally panicking. he's irritable when you're around and wretched when you aren't. his underlings don't know which is worse. he was at a loss when he realized you genuinely weren't bumbling back into his life for his appearance or status. seriously, what is wrong with you? it'd be easier to understand if you had some grand ambition in mind, using him as a means to an end. without this excuse to hide behind, he feels... vulnerable. uncomfortably so.
everything he gets attached to is taken from him. he's forgotten, abandoned, discarded when his worth is found lacking. you could find someone else. someone kind, open, and warm. someone who isn't him. it's terrifying, a thought that makes his skin writhe. especially since, should this premonition come to pass, even he doesn't know what havoc he'd wreak...
symptom two — clingy
once scaramouche likes you, you're his person. not even in a strictly possessive sense (although there's plenty of that), but you're essentially all he's got. he's around more often than he isn't. he insists that without him, your 'stupidity would do you in,' so he considers his hovering a 'necessary evil.' this is for your sake! strictly yours. not his, no, whatever gave you that idea? a bit presumptuous, don't you think?
his habit of acting as your second shadow relates to his aforementioned insecurity. whether he realizes it or not, he's always trying to prove his worth to you. tasks you mentioned dreading will find themselves completed, he'll drag you outdoors if you've been overworking yourself, and he silently sits freshly cooked meals beside you. he once cut vegetables into heart shapes, only to feel so embarrassed, that he diced them into a dusty substance.
symptom three — unconditionally supportive
so long as it doesn't take you away from him, he'll help you accomplish anything you want, good or bad. this is what could come to him most naturally. he loves the thought of you relying on him. it makes him feel wanted, like he's fulfilling a role no one else could in your life. it doesn't have to be material items either. if you're struggling with an issue and come to him for advice, he's noticeably pleased, like a cat that got the cream. you sought him out, you value his input.
he excels at putting together plans and breaking them into doable steps. next-level executive function. you might not want to consult him if you've gotten into a disagreement with a friend, but if you're struggling to know where to get started on a project or goal, he's got you covered. he'll wave off any of your doubt, flicking you on the forehead and grumbling that 'it's doable, just leave it to him.'
Tumblr media
primary area of concern
scaramouche views the world from a bitter lens. whereas some try to see the best in others, he sees the worst. this skepticism that's built up over centuries isn't going to disappear overnight. he'll make assumptions about your behavior that aren't necessarily true. he won't come outright and tell you his concerns either, the idea is foreign to him. it ends up falling on you to dispel his misconceptions, which can be an exhausting endeavor.
integrating him into your life proves to be a challenge as well. he can fake a sweet, friendly personality, but he'd only do that for interactions he sees value in. namely, leaving a good impression on your parents/any seniority figure whose approval is meaningful to you. he isn't trying to build a real connection, he just knows it'd be advantageous to win over those who you could you against him. he has no qualms about manipulating them either. he'd do this outside of your purview so you remain none the wiser.
Tumblr media
prognosis
it isn't a smooth road. there'll be times where his words cut deep and his involvement in your life feels suffocating. he isn't sure what he's doing and it shows. however, when he extinguishes the light in your eyes, he stills his traitorous tongue. the guilt gnaws at him incessantly. it's a self-fulfilling prophecy on his part — by fearing that he can't make you happy, he's more susceptible to doing just that. should you stick around, this loop isn't destined to repeat forever. his trust in you will build. it's a fragile thing, sown in soil unconducive to growth. be tender in your nourishment and the roots will coil themselves around you.
Tumblr media
*the universe has tried (and failed) to wrench you apart (0-20) your friends are praying that you'll break up (21-40) 'well it could/has be worse' bargaining mindset (41-60) a lil messiness as a treat (61-80) pure and wholesome (81-100)

So I LOVE the idea of a meet the parents fic where Danny is dating one of the bat kids and he is invited over to meet the rest of the family.
Whatever batkid you like (i personally like Tim x Danny)
And dinner is going GREAT, danny is charming the hell out of everyone when he says something vaguely concerning about his home life that borders neglect (or even just straight abuse) and Danny doesnt know what he said was wrong and just keeps eating without a thought.
Maybe he complimented Alfred’s cooking and said, “man this is great! Even better when it doesn’t get reanimated by your parents experiments” or “wow, I wish my folks cooked meals for me and my sister like this.”
and Bruce just gets that look in his eye. you know the one! And whoever is next to Bruce kicks him in the shin and glares at him like, “I know what your thinking! Don’t you dare!” And bruce just looks at them like, “but I cant not adopt him!” And danny is blissfully unaware of this whole conversation.
But if damien was the one who brought danny he would immediately offer for danny to stay without consulting ANYONE. like after he says vaguely concerning things damien is just like, “move here and you don’t have to go hungry ever again.” Or “live with me and i will protect you forever.” Or even just, “bring your sister next time, i am concerned for your health if your parents can reanimate food.”
On the flip side: Danny bringing one of the bats home with HIM!
Jazz would be SO excited to meet Danny’s significant other! Danny had been dreading bringing his bat home with him because his parents were EMBARRASSING (absent or explosive) so there they are sitting around the table waiting for jack and maddie and eventually danny sighs and just says its ok and to start eating. Jazz almost gets up to go hound their parents about this but danny stops her and smiles. Then like a hour later an explosion in the basement shakes the house and up from the basement Jack and Maddie wearing full hazmat suits burst through the basement doors as smoke bellows out. In the possess maddie greets them and goes back to doing what she was doing. The whole time the bat is mentally cataloging very problematic behavior the Fenton’s are showing as well as thinking of ways to bring danny and his sister somewhere safe.
OR
Jack and Maddie cause a fire in the kitchen while Danny’s bat is over and the fenton kids sigh like this has happened before, danny turns to jazz “ill go get the fire extinguisher.” And jazz nods, “Ill order takeout, any preferences?”
OR
Danny comes home with their bat to Jazz looking nervous and when danny sees her he immediately realizes that it is his parents doing the cooking tonight and is about to walk right back out the door with their bat but his dad walks out and stops him with a bright smile.
The bat is intimidated by Jack’s sheer size (he is a very large man and they never thought that someone could be taller than Superman but here was Jack Fenton) and then when they sit down to eat after Jack spent an hour talking at them. But then the food is reanimated and starts to attack and so the bat fights back and impresses the fenton parents with their fighting skills.
Either way both would be a disaster and i am LIVING for it!!!!!
